Mark Hewitt is MD at Rushes I’d like to take the opportunity to welcome you all to the 2nd Rushes Soho Shorts Festival and find it hard to believe that it is 12 months since I wrote the introduction for last year’s festival! All those involved in the festival, be it film makers, judges, or viewers, found the whole week great fun and I have no doubt that this year will be even better! Once again, the driving force of the festival has been our desire to create an informal event during which everyone can view the wealth of up and coming international film making talent in the relaxed environment of Soho’s famous bars and cafes. We are proud to have created a competition where new and experienced, amateur and professional directors can have their work viewed and evaluated on it’s merits rather than any other factors. The freedom of being able to use either video or film for entries was embraced by everyone last year and helped contribute to the festival’s success, and as a result, is one of the foundations of this year’s festival too. This has clearly been welcomed by film makers as, with over 700 films, the number of entries to this festival are well in excess of last year’s. This wealth of talent and diversity of material has enabled us to attract a number of industry lights to act as judges for the relevant categories and we are over the moon to have the support of both BAFTA and The Directors Guild for the festival. Once again, this has allowed the judging panels to be completely independent of Rushes and hence totally impartial, with films being judged on their merits and production values rather than any other factors. We are pleased to have so many of last year’s sponsors on board again and welcome our new sponsors to the family. Without the sponsorship of such companies, who

2

both value and appreciate the work of up and coming short film directors, it would not be possible to organise and hold the festival on the scale you will see this week. We are extremely grateful and thank them all. A new development from last year is that a number of the short-listed films can be seen on the internet and it is exciting to see the world of New Media becoming involved in the festival and backing short film makers so resolutely. Details, of where these films can be viewed on the web, are contained later in the programme and I would encourage you to e-mail the domain address to any of your friends, families or neighbours, who could not be here this week to see the finalists, so that they can join in wherever they are! You will find our sponsors listed later on in the programme, together with our venues, who have embraced this festival and opened their doors to us to show the short listed films. Without their support, the main principle of the festival, of creating an informal environment, would not be possible and we thank them all unreservedly. Finally, I would like to thank my own team at Rushes, for their commitment and enthusiasm in making this festival happen. Despite my promises to them, the work involved in pulling together the event has proven to be much more than last year, but I know you will join with me in taking pride in what they have achieved. Finally, there remains only to say that I hope you enjoy our 2nd Rushes Soho Shorts Festival; the films, the venues and the celebration of talent which it is designed to reflect. Length isn’t everything, as our cover says, but I know our festival will continue for many years to come! Until next year, enjoy the shows.

We know what you’re thinking. What’s a telecine manufacturer doing sponsoring the music video category of the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival? After all, this whole thing’s about aesthetic and artistic merit; not the nuts and bolts of telecine... We couldn’t agree more. We may be rather further behind the camera than you guys, but we’re here to tell you that all ITK’s revolutionary telecine technology is inspired by a passion for film just as powerful as yours. It’s our respect for the blood, sweat and tears you put into creating beautiful films that makes us determined to capture every last drop when it’s transferred to the digital domain.

A case in point is our brand new Millennium Machine - a ground-up re-design of the telecine process capable of resolutions up to 4K for any film type from 8mm to 70mm. It captures the rich organic feel of great film and creates digital images unmatched for quality and fidelity - which is why we call it the ‘ultimate telecine’. Since it’s our overriding mission to reproduce your artistic vision without compromise, we’re very happy to be associated with a film festival inspired by the same philosophy. Best of luck to everyone who’s entered. Contact Amadin Ryan at Innovation TK Tel: 01992 55 35 33

BAFTA, The Directors Guild and The New Producers Alliance

The Directors Guild of Great Britain is pleased to be associated with this festival and its’ celebration of film making.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts are proud to support initiatives that encourage new film making talent. Good luck to everybody who has entered this year’s festival. Enjoy the screenings! Contact Diane Glynn, Events Officer Tel: 020 7494 2751 Fax: 020 7494 2759

The New Producers Alliance (NPA) is the main focus and forum for new talent within the British Film Industry. Its membership includes some of the hottest new talent including Neil Peplow (Waking Ned) and Stella Nwimo (Is It The Design on the Wrapper?) and ranges from highly experienced feature film-makers, major companies and industry professionals to short film-makers and first-timers. Set up seven years ago, the NPA has grown rapidly into a permanent charitable organisation whose aims are to encourage, support and enable new film-makers, thereby providing the film industry with some of its brightest new talent of the future - an aim constantly proven by the work our members produce. These films include the recent hits Shooting Fish, Waking Ned and Event Horizon. The NPA provides its members with an array of services including a monthly newsletter, an indispensable annual directory, regular screenings of new British Films and an extensive programme of educational seminars and networking forums covering anything from financing, marketing and 16

We are the only organisation representing professional directors in all media, at every stage of experience, from the newest recruit through to our distinguished President, Peter Brook. We represent over 1000 directors in all media. The Guild is continually striving for better conditions, respect and remuneration to help develop the quality of our members’ work. It is also a central organisation, within which directors can network, find professional stimulus, and benefit from in service training through our much valued masterclass and observer scheme. And it is a place to debate the state of the art as it moves with the 21st Century. Tel: 020 7278 4343 Web: www.dggb.co.uk

From Production to Distribution -The Short! As part of the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival 2000 we are holding a Short Film Seminar sponsored by Sony and in conjunction with the NPA. An experienced panel including Douglas Davis from Atom Films, Kim Leggatt from the Short Film Bureau, Andrea Corbett from LFVDA, successful director James Pilkington will discuss how to fund and make your short film, getting it seen by the right people and then distribution. This

will be followed by a question and answer session. Complimentary drinks and canapĂŠs will be served in the bar afterwards, courtesy of Sony who will also be demonstrating their new HDCAM. This event will be held at The Curzon Cinema, Shaftesbury Avenue on Tuesday 1st August at 6.45pm.

If you are interested in attending please call the festival hotline on 020 7851 6207 as seats are limited.

Sony Broadcast & Professional UK is proud to be associated with the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival. As video production styles and budgets continue to diversify Sony addresses many levels within the production chain to match performance and budgets. To match the rapid growth in visual communication, the DVCAM line up has evolved to meet the crucial demands for both higher productivity and greater creativity in today’s production environment from palmcorders providing shots previously impossible to acquire to sophisticated nonlinear edit systems. Betacam SX provides a mainstay for widescreen documentary and magazine programming for television. Sony has spent many years working with clients to develop the concept of Digital Cinematography with widescreen Digital Betacam achieving remarkable success as an alternative to 16 and Super 16mm film for commercials, documentaries and features with many being transferred back

to film for theatrical release. Building on this, Sony has recently released a family of CineAlta high definition equipment to elevate digital image capture and post production quality to the level of 35mm film. Capable of operating at various frame rates including 24 frames per second, the HDCAM camcorder is already accepted as the Digital Movie Camera, ideal for exploring new horizons in digital production. Origination on high definition video can increase efficiency by enabling material to be directly loaded into HD post production tools for editing and effects. In addition, the new Sony Vialta multi-resolution telecine ensures the highest image quality transfer of film originated material into the digital domain.
