THE BEST THING IN SHORTS THIS SUMMER

FESTIVAL PROGRAMME

24 – 30THJULY1999

list of the venues and the times they are holding screenings, together with a map of Soho, is contained at the back of this programme. We hope it will become your hitchhiker’s guide to the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival for the coming week. This is only the start of things to come and we plan this to be an annual event in the Soho calendar. Rushes Soho Shorts Festival will only be a success if you enjoy it enough to want to come back next year and bring your friends! If you have any ideas or suggestions on how we can improve next years event please make your views known. You can either call the RSSF hotline on 0171 439 2397 or visit the website. Mark Hewitt is MD at Rushes I would like to welcome you all to the inaugural Rushes Soho Shorts Festival and hope that you will get as much enjoyment out of it as we have had putting it together. When the idea of a festival was suggested by one of our employees it was hard to resist as it seemed strange that an area such as Soho, which has the largest concentration of production and post production in the world, did not have this kind of event and so “RSSF” was born. We have tried to produce an informal event during which everyone can view the wealth of up and coming international talent in the relaxed environment of Soho’s famous bars and cafés. The aim has been to create a competition for new and experienced, amateur and professional directors in which they are able to have their work viewed and evaluated on its merits rather than on other factors. We have been flexible over whether film or video has been used, whether things have been shown previously or not and whether the available budget has been large or small. The result of this has been that over 500 entries have been received across the six categories, which is a huge response for this first year. This wealth of talent coupled with the quality of the entries, has meant it was easy for us to persuade a number of industry lights to act as judges for the relevant categories, so that the decisions of our judging panels can be seen to be one hundred percent independent and impartial.

Events such as this can not happen without the help and support of organisers and sponsors and so I would like to take a moment to thank everyone involved. The event has been held in association with Shots, Broadcast, Screen International and Production Solutions and without their support we would not have got the coverage we have enjoyed or the level of entries we have received. We look forward to working with them again next year. The response from our sponsors has been outstanding and it is with their backing we have been able to fund the event, which is non-profit making, and a mere thank you does not seem enough. However it is all we can offer, which we do willingly. You will find our sponsors listed later on in the programme together with our thanks to the venues who have embraced this festival and opened their doors to us to show these finalists. Finally I would like to thank my own team for their help in making this festival happen. The amount of work it has taken is vastly more than I led them to believe, but they have taken it in their stride and it is from their hard work that you will reap the benefits this week. Whether I can cajole them next year is another matter but a huge thank you to Joce, Paul and Jess for their seemingly never-ending work and commitment and to Sarah McKenzie for showing us the way to host a successful event. Finally, there remains only to say that we hope you enjoy this first Rushes Soho Shorts Festival; the films; the venues; and the celebration of talent it is designed to reflect. Until next year, enjoy the shows!

During the course of this week you will be able to view the short-listed entries for each of the six categories at over a dozen Soho establishments, at no charge, and we trust that you will find this new format for a festival a change from the norm. A 2

Discreet was established in 1992 on a simple principle: to provide a new breed of digital artists with intuitive, real-time technology to empower their creative visions. The company responded with flame*, its award winning visual effects system, and the post-production industry experienced a paradigm shift. Discreet now develops and offers a wide range of systems and software for visual effects, editing, production and 3D animation used in the creation of digital moving pictures for video, HDTV, the Web, broadcast graphics, interactive games and feature films. Discreet offers high-end and high definition effects and editing with inferno* and fire*; advanced effects and editing with flame* and smoke*, broadcast graphics and virtual set systems with frost*, flint* and edit*, and the creative and productivity benefits of 2D to 3D integration with paint*, effect*, edit* and 3D Studio MAX. Throughout the nineties, Discreet products have proved indispensable in the making of scores of feature films, such as Forrest Gump, Independence Day, The Fifth Element, Batman & Robin, Titanic, Godzilla, Armageddon, Episode I: The Phantom Menace and What Dreams May Come, to name a few. In fact, all the last three years’ nominees for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects used Discreet products to create their movie magic. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences responded to this great contribution by awarding Discreet the Academy’s Scientific and Engineering Award in 1999. Discreets’ products also helped shape programs and special events we see on our television screens at home such as FOX Sports’ Superbowl XXXIII, The Lipton Tennis Championship and Saturday Major League Baseball, ABC’s “World News Tonight with Peter Jennings,” and the 1996 US Presidential elections on ABC and CBS, as well as music videos by artists including U2, Madonna, George Michael, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles; and commercials for clients such as Nike, Pepsi, AT&T and McDonald’s.

To produce commercials and films that “stand out from the crowd” and meet the ever increasing demands for innovation and thought provoking creativity, is a true and rare talent. Rushes, who have been associated with Sony ProMedia for many years, know just how important events such as these are in encouraging young talent to display their work and develop and hone their skills. Using Sony Media ensures that all entries have the best possible “canvas” on which to present their achievements. For over 50 years, Sony have strived to be at the forefront in creative, innovative and exciting technology. This ambition has brought to the world such “icons” as the Walkman Personal Stereo, the Trinitron TV, Betacam, DVCAM, MiniDisc and of course, the PlayStation. Sony ProMedia stands as the benchmark of quality, reliability and choice. Meeting the high standards required in quality post production, as supplied by Rushes, and the ever increasing data storage environments, Sony Products have been developed to not only meet these demands, but to exceed them. Sony’s Advanced Metal Tape Technology, used in Digital BetaCam, Betacam SX and the BCT-MA Broadcast Master Betacam SP Video cassette, has been such an outstanding success that Sony have won two Emmy Awards, namely Metal Broadcasting Tape Technology in 1990 and Digital Betacam Metal Tape Technology 1995.

At ITK we’re always going on about our “Passion for Telecine”. But actually, it’s film that really turns us on. The telecine innovations that have made out name - TWiGi, SCANd’AL and Y-Front to name but three - have all been inspired by our urge to squeeze the utmost colour and quality from every inch of film - and get it on tape with all its drama and vibrance intact. To that end we’re about to announce the launch of the ultimate telecine - a machine capable of resolutions up to 4k and which happily handles absolutely any kind of film from Super 8 to IMAX. Yes IMAX! Imagine the impact and sheer power you’d have at your fingertips if you could use 70mm film. Well that’s exactly what’s going to be possible with ITK’s Millennium Machine - a ground-up re-design of the telecine process.

It’s because we’re driven by our love of film that we’re mad keen to sponsor the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival. After all, we’re relying on the film-makers, colorists, editors and engineers of the future to create meisterwerks which breathe new life into the industry. And we hope they’ll be counting on ITK’s future proof telecine magic to ensure that the integrity of their work is never compromised in the telecine process. Best of luck to everyone that’s entered!
