“Home is where your rump rests” —Pumbaa, The Lion King

This month as I began to think

about what home is to me, I remembered the quote above from Coco Kunstman & Melissa Burbank one of my favorite Disney movies, The Lion King (1994). Growing up in a military family I moved around a lot. The feeling of home was not my house, or street, or even comfortable surroundings. Those changed with every move and with every stage of my life. When I finally moved back to New Orleans, after having many adventures around the world, it hugged me like a grandma on a front porch. Completely enveloping me in love and a sense of home. Due to my transient nature I let go of the tangible feelings of home and attached myself to the emotional. The smell of my mom’s bread baking (even though I had to make it myself in her absence) or watching Little Women (1994) at Christmas (missing my sister so much the whole time). These are things that make a home to me. Now that my family occupies three continents, we have adopted this mentality from Pumbaa’s sage statement. New Orleans can take care of the rest. It is a city that celebrates those intangible hallmarks of home. The music that can lift your spirits or help you sing the blues. The food that makes you wish your mama cooked that well. The culture that calls everyone darlin’ and really means it. Using this endearment is this most New Orleanian trait that I have adopted as my definition of home. And you better “Be Nice or Leave!” It is with this mentality that I can be sitting here now in San Diego, CA with an old Dr. John record playing, drinking a café au lait and still feel the home vibe of New Orleans wrapping me up like a blanket. I would like to dedicate this issue to the people, places, and things that make up New Orleans. You are the home in my heart. Wherever my rump may rest. Much Love,

Coco & Melissa

Get Your Garden Ready For Winter The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder. The kids are back in school, and the mornings are pleasantly chilly as they head off to the bus stop. Pretty soon, it will be time to hang up your gardening clogs and put your hoes, rakes and planters back in the shed. But before you close up your garden shed and put your favorite plot of land to bed, there are some things you should do to get your garden winter-ready. Closing your garden right this fall can save you a lot of work when the spring growing season comes around next year. Spring may seem a long way off when there is a foot of snow on the road, but gardening season will be back before you know it. Here are some smart tips to get your garden ready for winter and minimize the amount of work you need to do next year. . Prune your summer-blooming flowering shrubs. Now is the time to give those summer bloomers one final pruning. . Weed carefully. Leaving weeds in the ground over the winter is just asking for trouble, so give your flower beds and vegetable garden one last weeding before you close your garden shed for the winter. . Divide your perennials. It is easy to let your perennials get overgrown, so now is the time to divide them and make more room. Take advantage of the last warm days of autumn, enjoy some quality time in your garden and get ready New Orleans NALAmag.com for 6a bountiful spring season next year.

. R e m o v e d e a d l e a v e s f r o m y o u r perennials. While you are dividing your perennials, check for dead leaves and remove as many as you find. You want the ground to be free of weeds, dead leaves and ground litter before the first snowfall. . Rake up leaves. It is important to mulch the fallen leaves on your lawn to provide extra protection for the winter season, but your flower beds and garden deserves the same consideration. Rake fallen leaves away from your flower beds and garden areas to keep the soil in good shape for the harsh winter to come. . Give your garden implements a thorough deep cleaning. Even if you keep your tools in pristine condition, it can’t hurt to give them a final cleaning before putting them away for the winter. Poison ivy and other nasty weeds can hide out in the tiniest of crevices, and a good cleaning with bleach and water will protect you—and your garden—next season. Gardening is a wonderful hobby, but in most parts of the country it is not a year-round pastime. When the weather turns cooler and the leaves start to change colors, it is time to think about putting your garden to bed. The tips listed above can help you retire your garden the right way, so you will be ready for the growing season to come.

Your Dog Is Listening...

Scientists in Hungary published a groundbreaking new study that showed

not only is your dog listening to your words, they can use your intonation to understand what you are saying. Actual brain mappings of live dogs (fMRI brain scans a non-invasive, harmless way of measurement) showed that a dogs’ understanding comes from both association with actual words and phrases as well as the tone of voice used to speak. This new research into the field of dog cognition has taken one giant paw leap forward in the path of understanding our furry friends. The brain scans showed that dogs have an actual understanding of our language similar to that of an early human child. Although they can’t talk back (yet) they certainly can communicate with their actions and even with their barks & voice. We look forward to more on this research in the coming years. Who knows what is

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 medium yellow onions, chopped (about 3 cups total) 2 large butternut squash (about 5 pounds total), peeled and diced into chunks 4 medium or 3 large apples peeled, cored and roughly diced 3-4 cups low sodium chicken stock, divided 1 ¼ teaspoon kosher salt Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg In a large, deep stockpot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over low. ¼ teaspoon cayenne Add the onions and cook until very tender, about 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add apples and squash to the pot and then add 2 cups of the stock. Bring the pot to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover and cook until the squash and apples are very soft, about 20 to 30 minutes. Once the apples and squash are tender, puree the soup with an immersion blender. Add remaining stock slowly until you reach desired consistency. Leave the texture fairly thick and rich to warm you up on the cold and rainy days to come. Stir in the salt, nutmeg, black pepper, and cayenne to taste.

WALKING MEDITATION

The Calming & Centering Effects of Labyrinths

A

n archetypal labyrinth gently leads us in a circular path inward toward a center and t h e n b a c k o u t a g a i n . Fo u n d i n ancient cultures from African, Celtic and Greek to Native American, they became especially popular fixtures in Medieval European churches; one of the most renowned is in France’s Chartres Cathedral. Depictions of labyrinths have been included in paintings, pottery, tapestries and in Hopi baskets as a sacred symbol of Mother Earth. Several American tribes saw the pattern as a medicine wheel. Celts may have regarded it as a neverending knot or circle. While some of the oldest known labyrinths decorate cave walls in Spain, today they grace diverse locations ranging from spas and wellness centers to parks, gardens, university campuses and even prisons. “Labyrinths can be outdoors or indoors. Permanent labyrinths may be made of stones, rocks, bricks or inlaid stones. Temporary labyrinths can be painted on grass or made with all sorts of things for a particular purpose or appropriate 22

New Orleans

NALAmag.com

to a specific cause,” explains Diane Rudebock, Ed.D., resource vice president and research chair of the Labyrinth Society, in Trumansburg, New York. “Walking a labyrinth is useful for those that sometimes have a hard time being outwardly still and drawing themselves inward. You must move your body, and because you’re focused on the path while you’re walking it, it’s easier to drop wholly into the journey and let go of all else,” says Anne Bull, of Veriditas, a Petaluma, California, nonprofit that supports new labyrinth designs to suit the spiritual needs of hospitals, schools and retreat centers. The group also sponsors a worldwide directory at LabyrinthLocator. com.

Individual Approaches

A labyrinth walk typically involves three stages. The first is for releasing extraneous thoughts on the way to the center. Upon arriving in the stillness of that point, the participant opens heart and mind to receive whatever message or wisdom is intended for them. The return path is the integration phase, to make a fresh insight our own.

Participants should approach their walk in different ways: One may have a specific question or intention in mind; another may be open to whatever occurs during their meditation; yet another may repeat a meditative mantra. One might even choose to bypass the path entirely in order to sit contemplatively at its center. Unlike a maze, it’s impossible to lose our way with the circular path serving as a simple and reliable guide. Although scientific research on labyrinth meditation has been limited to participant questionnaires, future studies may incorporate the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging technology to measure brain activity and record what individuals experience. Labyrinths located in settings like hospitals and prisons lend themselves to such research, says Rudebock. As a Veriditas-certified labyrinth facilitator, she conducts workshops and observes, “Walks are unique to each individual and may not produce uniform or replicable results.” At its core, the experience is about listening to our truest self, away from the cacophony of modern life. “I believe that the world needs places where our souls can be

quiet,” remarks Jean Richardson, director of the Kirkridge Retreat and Study Center, in Bangor, Pennsylvania, which includes a seven-circuit labyrinth. “Retreat centers and labyrinths are places where we can listen to our inner heart, feel our inner calling and tap into our own divine nature. I think deep listening is not always valued in a world where we are rewarded for being busy and keeping our schedules full.” Gina McGalliard is a freelance writer in San Diego, CA.
