The Na9onal Associa9on of La9no Arts and Cultures (NALAC) is a legacy organiza9on inves9ng in the La9no heritage of this na9on. For over 25 years, NALAC has built a strong founda9on for the promo9on of La9no arts and culture and its advocacy efforts have advanced issues of cultural equity and raised the visibility and understanding of La9no ar9s9c and cultural expression. The NaEonal AssociaEon of LaEno Arts and Cultures (NALAC) is the naEon's leading nonprofit organizaEon exclusively dedicated to the promoEon, advancement, development, and culEvaEon of the LaEno arts field. In this capacity, NALAC s9mulates and facilitates intergenera9onal dialogues among disciplines, languages, and tradi9onal and contemporary expressions. NALAC serves thousands of La9no ar9sts and hundreds of organiza9ons represen9ng a na9onal and interna9onal community of mul9ple La9nidades; a network that crosses many cultures across the La9no Diaspora.

NALAC Regional Arts Training Workshops are convened throughout the na9on to provide comprehensive professional development, training and a space for community dialogue among the La9no arts field and other diverse arts sectors. These opportuni9es for rela9onship-­‐building and networking are essen9al to the advancement of the La9no arts community, and the na9on's art sector as a whole. Workshop presenters and par9cipants are of diverse backgrounds, represen9ng all ar9s9c disciplines, and a strong ethnic, gender, age, sexual orienta9on, and economic diversity. By empowering the field and providing new opportuni9es, NALAC can reduce economic inequali9es, galvanize mul9genera9onal networks and actualize social change in the realms of racial equity and civic engagement. With 27 Regionals to date, par9cipants deepen their engagement with each other, with NALAC, and together create, mobilize, and amplify a na9onal La9no arts and cultural agenda that addresses issues of concern to historically underrepresented and disenfranchised communi9es. Cri9cal dialogue and crea9ve thinking transpires through interac9ve workshops, discussion forums, ar9s9c interven9ons, technical assistance, and performances.

Possibili7es of showing in a gallery, exchanging info about projects related to cancer, invita7on to take Afro-­‐Brazilian dance and to provide info to others.... I got in contact with Laura Quinlan and inquired about doing an internship with the Rhythm Founda7on. I'm also working on a project to develop a play to inform communi7es on DACA and DAPA and will be reaching out to actors I met at the training. a) The possibility for exhibit space for the art students b) The connec7on with the Miami Dade Community college Art Department to collaborate with our programs Possible exhibits in the Viernes Culturales art gallery: Juana Valdes & EnFamilia. I was fortunate enough to meet Adriana Herrera, of Aluna Art Founda7on, who asked me to contact her regarding a possible show in the future, featuring young painters…I was also very fortunate to meet Alma Herrera-­‐Pazmiño, of Loco Bloco….I also made a new friend in Oscar Fuentes. He was kind, gracious, and a=er hearing about my MFA thesis project (based on landscapes of Cuba)… 20


¡  Keep researching, keep learning, keep making art... I am encouraged to

possibly look into con7nuing my research through a PhD program, incorpora7ng a studio art applica7on with the disserta7on…I also am applying for the NALAC Leadership Ins7tute. I have been le= so inspired… ¡  My favorite was learning what people are doing in my own community.

Also, this was my first introduc7on to NALAC.

¡  That we, La7nos, can work in collabora7on with other ins7tu7ons or

people without risking our own business.

¡  To partner with art ins7tu7ons in Europe to exchange ar7sts' residencies,

and to expose our members (ar7sts) to that market. ¡  Addi7onal emerging leaders or collabora7ons, remote connec7ons. ¡  Performance art workshops would be interes7ng. As well as wri7ng for the

stage. ¡  If you do not already have it a you tube channel that gives highlights of

workshops and can have informa7onal tools for ar7sts and arts organiza7ons ¡  We should begin to address the changes to Cuban art, and Cuban ar7sts

development, and the art movement, in light of the changes that are occurring between the two countries. A good topic to take the lead on... 22


¡  I admire and follow the work of many private funders. As a

government funder, we face many legal issues and hurdles, with the distribu7on of funds. It might be a good area to explore. ¡  My spouse and I were very glad to aUend this workshop. We learned

a lot of important things and had the opportunity to meet very nice people. Kudos to Maria Lopez de Leon! NALAC must be so proud of having her as its Execu7ve Director. ¡  1) The concept of power rela7ons and art, need to be expanded. 2)

Re-­‐evaluate how NGO’s could see beyond grants to understand the role of poli7cal alliances to transform society. 3) Avoid having presenter/s use their personal experience to evaluate the experience of the whole society. ¡  LOVE NALAC!
