Turning Waste into Fuel
The clear, blue flame emanating from the burner of the humble, metal cooking stove is a luminous sign of hope for hundreds of millions of poor farming families. And yet inventor Alexis Belonio was initially blithely unaware that he had achieved what leading experts had declared could not be done: turn agricultural waste into purified gas for domestic cooking in a top-lit, updraft, biomass gas stove.
From Waste to Fuel
In the many countries where rice is the staple food, small changes to the use of this grain can make a profound difference. The world’s annual 650-million-tonne rice crop provides sustenance three times a day for two billion people, mainly in developing countries in the tropics. For these people, this stuff of life is indispensable, but to cook the rice they need gas or kerosene, fossil fuels that come at an increasingly unaffordable cost and with often negative consequences on health and climate. But there is another side to rice: the huge piles of inedible husks that are often found rotting beside roads or smouldering in fields, millions of tonnes of potential energy, mostly going to waste. For Belonio, a 48-year-old associate professor of agricultural engineering in the Philippines and inventor of over 30 devices to help farmers, many of them poor, finding uses for this neglected abundance became an obsession
Cooking with Gas
Cookers fuelled by rice husks have been used before, but they are sooty and unhealthy, and they cannot generate enough heat to cook food quickly. Belonio believed that if he could convert the rice husks to gas, it would provide a much hotter, cleaner flame to cook on. Gasification has been regularly re-invented for many purposes over the past 150 years, including for several types of stoves, but few applications have promised to benefit so many people, so simply and so cheaply. Drawing the concept from a technical workshop on wood gasification at the Asian Institute of Technology, in Thailand, then working alone and with his own resources, he designed a simple, top-lit stove with a small fan at the base supplying an updraft of air. In Belonio’s design, a stream of oxygen converts the burning rice husk fuel to a combustible blend of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane gases, yielding a hot, blue flame similar to that produced by burning natural gas. At first, says Emeritus Professor Paul S. Anderson, of Illinois State University, Belonio “was unaware that what he was trying to do had been deemed . . . as not being possible. He did not even know he should have been highly surprised that he succeeded!” Belonio says simply: “It is a God-given technology. I wish to share it with people all around the world.” 8
Truth in Numbers
But there was a setback. Belonio’s early stoves, made in the Philippines, sold at US$100, too expensive for a poor family to afford. Further research and development conducted in Indonesia significantly reduced the retail price of the stove to only $25. This was achieved by simplifying the design of the stove in terms of operation, materials and fabrication. Thousands of cookers are now being manufactured by companies cooperating with Belonio in the Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia. By exploiting a freely available waste product at a time of soaring energy prices, the stoves can save a family of rice farmers about $150 a year in fuel bills, a huge benefit for families that live on $2 or $3 a day. The potential benefits are prodigious. A tonne of rice husks contains the same energy as 415 litres of petrol or 378 litres of kerosene. A few handfuls of rice husks can boil water in six to nine minutes. Best of all, the husks are usually free, either on the farm or from the waste dumps that surround rice mills. Furthermore, by being far more efficient than ordinary cookers, Belonio’s stoves reduce greenhouse gas emissions and eliminate toxic fumes inside houses. Even the char left after burning can be recycled to improve farm soils or to form bio-coal briquettes.
More Inventions
Belonio has recently scaled up the principle
of his domestic stove to create a whole family of new technologies: dual-reactor and continuous-flow gasifiers for grain dryers, bakery ovens, commercial kitchen stoves, and small power-generating plants. His latest invention, a “super-gasifier”, is a powerful rice-husk stove driven by injecting superheated steam, which, he says, is ideal for cottage industries. “I was very surprised at how well it worked. That was a great moment.” His technologies are proven, reliable and inexpensive. In addition to rice husks, they can use other biomass such as coconut husk, corn cobs and sugarcane bagasse, instead of fossil fuels or timber from fast-vanishing rainforests. Belonio’s ambition now is to spread the word about his inventions and to share the know-how, in the Philippines and around the world. He has already published a handbook on building the rice-husk gas stove, which is available for free on the World Wide Web. With funds from his Rolex Award, Belonio plans to set up a demonstration centre in Iloilo, in the Philippines, to disseminate free information and to provide training and technical advice. He will also research new inventions, such as a large-scale, rice-huskfuelled gasifier and a gas-turbine powergenerating plant for supplying electrical energy to rice mills and for lighting remote villages. He even envisions storing gas from rice husks to run farm machinery.

In 2011, he won as Breakthrough Designer in the WGSN Global Fashion Award held in New YorkHe joined the Miami Fashion Week where his swimwear collections and bejeweled gowns were featured. Latin superstar Jennifer Lopez recently wore a Filipino creation by fashion desinger Michael Cinco while performing on an American TV show. The 43-year-old singer-actress made an appearance on the reality dancing competition “Dancing with the Stars,” where she sang alongside renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. During the performance, Lopez wore a black lace gown by Filipino designer Michael Cinco. The Dubai-based fashion designer proudly shared photos of Lopez in his creation on microblogging site Twitter shortly after the program’s live telecast. The Cinco creation, which was first shown at the Style Fashion Week in Los Angeles in March, is reportedly embellished with Swarovski crystals. Lopez was seen pairing the long-sleeved, highneck gown with diamond jewelry. This isn’t the first time a Cinco design has been worn by international celebrities. Pop stars Lady Gaga and Britney Spears have both donned creations by the Filipino designer on separate

Britannia Group of Islands
In the Province of Surigao Del Sur lie 24 Islands and Islets so beautifully scattered in the waters of Lianga Bay facing the great Oceans of the Pacific. These amazing gifts of nature are called BRITANNIA GROUP OF ISLANDS.
Britannia Group of Islands is situated in Barangay Britannia of San Agustin in the central region of Surigao Del Sur. From Davao City, San Agustin can be reached by passenger bus or private vehicle approximately 6 hours away. The road trip going there may be dull but rest assured these Islets are worth the long travel. Not known to many, Surigao del Sur, an eastern province of Mindanao is blessed with different islands and islets on its coastal area. Among these Islands in the entire province, Britannia Group of Islands are the most enticing. When I first set my eyes on these islets, I immediately succumbed to pure admiration of its beauty that I say is truly beyond compare. Composed of 24 Islets, this Group of Islands varies from shapes and sizes scattered magnificently in the open sea. When I first
saw them, it instantly reminded me of the Hundred Islands of Pangasinan and the Chocolate Hills of Bohol, all combined as one. There were adjacent Islets spherical in shape and some of them are partially surrounded with pristine white sands so pure and refined. It was actually raining when we got there and dark clouds hovered above the islets but it didn’t obstruct from putting us all at awe.

Our first point of destination was the Boslon Island, the largest islet in the group. Boslon Island is surrounded by different rock formations on one side; on the other are powdery white sands stretching out to the bluish green sea waters. Being the biggest islet among the 24, Boslon is the perfect place for overnight camping. Hence, it is where we took shelter for the night. From Boslon Island, the gorgeous view of other islets can already be seen in its full perfection. I was mesmerized seeing the lovely view of Panlangagan Cave Island and Panlangagan Forest Island on one side, a walk away during low tide from Boslon. On the other side was the spectacular sight of Minasingin Island. From afar, the sight of Isla Verde Island, Malingin Island and Litik Island looked like green mushrooms that sprouted out of the sea. Basking myself on the beach, I savored every inch of the scenery that surrounded us. I felt so close the sea giving me an utmost feeling of being “A Son of a Beach”, truly delightful. The next day, our Britannia Island Exploration continued. Our point of destination this time was Bonbon Island. From Boslon Island, Bonbon can be reached by boat in 20 minutes. But the 20 minutes boat ride gave us the full eye-catching view of the other 24 Islets of Britannia. Among these Islands that immediately fascinated us were Kang Jose Island, Kanlota Island and Taguan Island. The farthest Islands of Panas and San Pablo were also two striking sights during the boat ride. Hiyor Hiyoran Island and Hagonoy Island on the other hand looked so enticing to frolic and laze around with
its efined white sand shores. Indeed, this was amongs island boat rides I surely never forget. Truly astonishing. At Bonbon Island, a long stretch of powdery white sand beach and green vegetations welcomed us. An island so truly pristine and delicately tamed by nature. The sea breeze that kissed our cheeks was spanking fresh and blue waters were comfortably cool. An ideal place to bask around and commune with Island’s charm and magic. After luxuriating ourselves with the magical allure of the Bonbon Island, we headed back to our campsite in Oslon. Going back, we passed by the Naked Island, a long stretch of sand bar so pure and white that vanishes during high tide. The Naked Island has no vegetation but its lengthy stretch of creamy sand bar is enough to truly experience a one of a kind beach combing like we had. On the boat leaving Boslon Island to mainland, I felt a great fulfillment inside. I felt so blessed to explore this beauty that has been kept for many years from commercial tourism. I felt so lucky to experience its pristine exquisiteness before influx of tourism commerce comes in because I know Britannia Group of Island can potentially become Surigao del Sur’s main tourist destination. Davor eyes dev’t of palm oil industry in 3 towns BOSTON, Davao Oriental, At least 20,000 hectares in the three typhoon-devastated towns of Davao Oriental’s eastern coast were identified potential areas for cultivating oil palm. This came from a team of expert agronomists and agri-business specialists from the Indo Food Company under Indonesia’s largest conglomerate the Salim Group of Companies who visited the province in response to an invitation from Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon who is keen at tapping huge investment opportunities that will fuel economic activities in her towns. Hisar Sihombing, an expert agronomist and soil scientist from the Indo Food revealed that the topography, climate, and the soil in the areas are favorable for the oil palm. The team identified three locations in Baganga with a combined total area of 14,500 hectares, Cateel with 4,000 hectares and Boston with 1,600 hectares suitable for the crop. While the lands which used to be planted with coconuts now lay flattened and empty, Hisar Sihombing, said that now would be a perfect moment to shift to a more productive crop such as the oil palm. The oil palm, he said, requires to be planted on a maximum elevation of 400 meters above sea level. He explains that the higher the elevation is, the thinner the soil becomes, thus, halting the growth of the crop. Climate is also a favorable feature in these areas as there are less dry spells and more wet months. With these favorable environmental conditions, Sihombing hopes that the industry development will push through in the province. Oil palm has the average gestation period of four years before farmers could start harvesting the FFB’s (Fresh Fruit Bunches). While waiting for the crops to mature, the Indo Food suggests a scheme involving the company providing farmers with other cash crops for the waiting period. Meanwhile, to fully and continuously benefit on the venture, Indo Food suggests implementing a staggered approach in planting which means continuously harvest throughout the year since planting is not done simultaneously. In terms of profit sharing, further negotiations are to be done should the investment pushes through. While Davao Oriental is bent on exploring this big-ticket oil palm investment opportunity which will tap the province’s vast lands, it also intends to shift the economy away from a reliance on copra and establishing this alternative agri-based industry that is highly profitable for the local farmers and will give a boost to the province’s local economy. Governor Malanyaon is optimistic that embarking to a new highly-productive crop such as the oil palm will lure economic surge, especially on the three typhoonhit towns. She is also looking into expansion of the industry to other towns within the province as well as the other neighboring provinces.

Provincial Planning & Development Officer Raymundo Pajarito who is the Provincial Nutrition Action Officer at the same time; Provincial Health Officer Dr. Renato Basañes; Mr. Leo Dominador FajardoHead of Mission of the UNICEF- Davao; Asst. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Georgie Arvin Legaspi; Provincial Economic Enterprise & Management Officer Dr. John Edward Coloma and; Nutritionist-Dietician Perpetua R. Labadia of the Center for Health Development (CHD)- DOH Region XI. In the said Tripartite Agreement, the UN-WFP shall give an additional support of P2.0 Million to ComVal to continue its implemented “Nutrition Management in Emergency Situation Project” through the Provincial Nutrition Council at the typhoon hard-hit Municipalities: New Bataan, Compostela, Monkayo, Montevista, and Laak. On the other hand, the provincial government shall allocate P717,166.80 as a counterpart. Aside from the P2.0 Million, the UN-WFP will also give 464,760 kilos of rice; 46,476 kilos of mongo beans; and an additional 1,024 boxes of Ready to Use Supplementary Foods (RUSF) for Moderately Acute Malnutrition (MAM). These will be given to about 11,619 typhoon Pablo victims where 9,619 of them are lactating mothers and the other 2,000 are children who are 6 months up to 59 months of age.
City Tourism Office to intensify promotion of Davao City as tourist destination Davao City, The City Tourism Office is looking at intensifying its promotion of Davao City as a tourist destination with more activities that will attract visitors here and abroad to generate more jobs. Jason Magnaye, head of the City Investment Promotion Center and the City Tourism Office said that bringing in more visitors to the city remains a challenge for the local government and the accommodation agency. Even then, he said tourist arrival brings more jobs to the city. Magnaye said that a visitor usually spends P2,800 a day which covers expenses in food, transportation and frolicking around the city. “The money spent by visitors circulates and benefits all stakeholders in the tourism industry from tour operators, taxi drivers, waiters,” he said. He revealed that the tourist arrival in 2012 registered 1.075 million as reported by large and small hotels in the city. “From the looks of it, at the very least, we had 1, 075,00 people who benefitted from the tourist arrival last year,” Magnaye said. Magnaye recalled that in 2011, tourist
arrival- record was 744,275. “The 2012 figure in tourist arrival is equivalent to 45 percent increase in tourist arrival compared to 2011,” Magnaye said. He attributed the influx of visitors to the many events conducted last year in the city ranging from various conventions to traditional activities like Araw ng Dabaw and Kadayawan Festival, availability of new flights connecting Davao to other areas of destination in the country. Magnaye said many establishments also opened in 2012 like the malls, convention centers and new resorts. “They provided more reasons for people to come,” he said. Magnaye said that this summer, he expects a surge of 15 percent or 30 to 40,000 visitors per month compared to previous years. He said that the first three months of 2013, the occupancy rate among the hotels in the city recorded 67 percent. “It is an indication that we still have enough rooms for visitors. It is just really a matter of timing and spacing the events. It is important that activities will not be lumped only on one weekend,” Magnaye said.

The seating is director chairs with Hollywood Stars names on the back. The seating arrangements include booths which you would find at any good American Diner. Overall the design concept really works well and it does really look like what it intends to be. It’s probably going to become “The Student Hangout” in Davao City. My wife, myself and our photography crew were looking forward to a taste of American Burgers here in our home city. The menu has plenty of choices to satisfy anyone’s taste in burgers. They also have a variety of real milkshakes. Not the usual Filipino shakes that are mainly ice but ones that have real fresh milk and ice-cream. The way a shake is supposed to be made. Also available are the usual soft-drinks and beer. Thinking myself a big eater I ordered Arnold’s Giant Burger said to be good for four people. This is a real giant of a burger and the writer could only manage 3/4 of it lol. The patties in all the burgers are made to the recipe of one of the owners Sid (an American). Authentic 100% beef and spiced perfectly they truly are the star component in all Hollywood Burgers. Close runner up is the very delicious buns. After all, the patty and buns are the largest parts of any burger and the ones most overlooked by most Burger Joints in Davao. My Arnold Giant Burger was cooked to perfection. The patty was flame grilled retaining all the juicy flavors of prime beef while the fatty elements are left behind on the grill. Makes for a healthier burger. A great tasting burger which I will probably order again on my next visit but this time I will share it with another person. My wife and our photography crew had a varying array of Hollywood Burgers and all were complimentary about what they had eaten. Overall our judgment is that any Burger Fan has to put this Diner on their must visit itinerary. The combination of delicious burgers, fries and shakes with the great layout and design of the store makes it an unforgettable dining experience.
