notes from the publisher A Note of Thanks from the Publisher With the April edition of N2 Magazine, we mark our first year of being part of the Central Texas community. It has been a tremendous success! For the most part, our success was made possible by all the terrific clients, friends, and neighbors we have had the opportunity to meet and work with over the past year. On St Patrick’s Day, we celebrated our upcoming anniversary with our friends at the Elite Circle Grille in Waco. A portion of the proceeds from the event was donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation of Waco. Again, we thank you and are overwhelmed by the generosity of Central Texans. From the outset, our mission was to support the people and unique businesses of Central Texas and to spread the word about our wonderful community. We were accepted with open arms and friendly smiles which touched our hearts. For this, we will always be grateful. It has been an honor to serve you. As we look forward to the years to come, we are excited and energized. We believe that together we can achieve anything our hearts desire and we predict continued growth and prosperity for the community and N2 Magazine. The future is bright and ours for the making. Because of you, our hearts are full of joy and that is yet another reason for us to say, we are N2 Central Texas! Wishing you the very best, W. It’s a Beautiful FREE fall for Gavin DeGraw

Gavin DeGraw’s latest release, FREE offers eclectic variety stripped to the bare essentials unlike his earlier recordings. This release is vulnerable, raw, and full of chaotic emotion and intensity. Recorded in Brooklyn in less than 2 weeks, it is interesting to follow his progression from touching ballads to this more edgy, eccentric side of Gavin Degraw. His performances are usually packed with a punch and remnants of shows like loud parties with all your best friends. On Free, fans experience a more intimate side of the birth of a new dimension to this multitalented artist’s repertoire. The title and the track by the same name refer to the giving of oneself to the sacrifices we make in life, to the choices we make, and to coming home and claiming yourself again. The release also includes the tracks Glass and Dancing Shoes. For those more familiar with DeGraw’s work, this comes as an added bonus. Stay, which was released for fan viewing on multiple websites this past week, has maintained his tie to his most loyal listeners, his female fan base. Waterfall is a soulful, seductive piece which some fans will find unusual yet enticing as this artist explores as yet uncharted territory. The track Mountains to Move has a bluesy, feel-good rhythm despite the story being told of a twisted, emotional rollercoaster that conjures images of a distraught couple sitting in their 1950’s kitchen with the bayou steaming outside the window. Indian Summer, by the late Chris Whitley, is the only cover tune on this release and it takes on a new dimension as well. “I wanted to expose Chris’s music to my fans,” DeGraw says with a smile, Whitley being one of his favorite artists. Whitley’s version was recorded in a barn in Vermont with his signature dobro and beat box. DeGraw offers authenticity and a different dimension to this simple song, one Whitley himself would have been proud of as he always supported art and its independent progression. This release for DeGraw has defined his intention, to be around for a very long time. Lover Be Strong has you moving from the first stroke; it leaves us waiting and wanting much more. It has been a long road from the woods of South Fallsburg, New York, where things all began for this imaginative storyteller that waited patiently to take the seat of his older sister to get those piano lessons. This release is a milestone in the musical history of the all grown-up Gavin DeGraw. This is not a piano pop rocker; this is a man and his music. You can get everything you need to make your Home special from our clients right here in Central Texas. After all, you chose a very special place to make your Home, one full of very special people. N2 is Home. Are you?

The Waco Association of REALTORS is all set for the American Home Week celebration, April 13th through the 17th. This annual fundraising drive raises money for a number of community programs and organizations. This is just one of the many ways the Association gives back to Central Texas.

Move N2 April with the 2009 PARADE OF HOMES Spring is the perfect time to purchase a new home or give an existing home a fresh new look. The Waco Association of REALTORS was established in 1925. More than eight decades later, they still provide valuable services to their members as well as utilizing their membership volume to raise money for various community service projects throughout Waco. Although the Association exists primarily to support the needs of its members, throughout the year and specifically during American Home Week, they enjoy giving back to the community which supports their businesses. The fundraising efforts make many community service projects possible through the dollars they raise during the week’s events. Among these are Toys for Tots, The Rainbow Room, The Family Abuse Center, Senior Ministries, Support for Troops, and TREPAC. SCHEDULE OF THE EVENTS Monday, April 13 – Salsa & Margarita Showdown---Raises money for the majority of community service projects. Tuesday, April 14 – Turkey Fry & TREPAC Auction---Raises money primarily for TREPAC. Wednesday, April 15 – American Home Week Luncheon---Collects used cell phones for the Family Abuse Center and additional funds for community service projects. Bingo games raise money for Toys for Tots. Thursday, April 16 – Golf Tournament---Proceeds go to Toys for Tots. Friday, April 17 – Hamburger Luncheon---Raises money for The Rainbow Room and the Support for Troops project. American Home Week is a fun week for everyone—not just realtors. Central Texans are caring, generous folks. Real estate trends may come and go, but one thing remains consistent—the Waco Association of REALTORS is dedicated to giving back to the community. The slogan for American Home Week is ‘Hats off to you’. It was originally created for a fundraising effort for Support for Troops. It was decided that the slogan should be kept. We agree and our hats are off to the Waco Association of Realtors for all they do. The Waco Association of Realtors is a valued member of our Central Texas community. Join them for American Home Week for fun, for our community, and most importantly for all those that they support. 2025 North 44th Waco, Texas 76710 Phone: 254-776-0210 Fax: 254-776-0218 wacorealtors@grandecom.net www.wacorealtors.com Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

GoFarm! Austin’s Backyard Gardeners We plant it. You Eat it. A strong belief that the food system is broken and a love of farming and eating real food inspired Jessica Ellison and Natalie Yoder to form GoFarm! in the fall of 2008. GoFarm!, based on the East Side of Austin, TX, is a relatively simple business. Following a brief free consultation and assessment of the environmental factors in each client’s backyard, they construct a personalized artistic vegetable garden to fit the specific needs of each family, including size, gardening techniques and types of vegetables produced. GoFarm! makes weekly visits to maintain the garden’s health and productivity; they will even harvest fresh, ripe vegetables and bring them to the client’s door. Also available are chicken coops for organic eggs, urban bee-hives for fresh honey and compost piles for lasting supplies of organic fertilizer. GoFarmers Natalie and Jessica enjoy seeing people understand that they are getting a lot more than what they payed for – sure, the food tastes great, but it is a miracle to watch a seed grow! “One of our clients told us recently that he thought that working in his garden made him a better father, he thought that it made him more patient,” Jessica said. “It is hard to see growth when you’re in the middle of raising a child. It is difficult to see the fruits of your labor and easy to wonder if what you’re doing is doing any good. But, in the garden growth is easily seen. You nurture a seed, and it bears fruit.” With a philosophy emphasizing community building, real food and sustainability, GoFarm! offers a service as well as an education. Whether they’re dealing with an expert gardener hoping to hone their skills with the latest techniques or the beginner who has always wanted an organic garden but doesn’t know where to start, GoFarm!’s mission is to provide each client with the skills and experience necessary to harvest healthy, robust gardens for the rest of their lives. Personalized service is a core value; each client chooses the level of service they desire, ranging from one time garden construction with a tutorial to weekly maintenance and harvesting. GoFarm! believes that backyard vegetable gardens solve a lot of problems. America has a struggling health care system due to obesity related problems, families that eat their meals in a car – if they eat together at all – and a whole agricultural system that is dependent on fossil fuels from countries that aren’t so amiable to us. Barbara Kingsolver, in Animal, Vegetable, Mineral, said “If every citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce, we could reduce our country’s oil consumption by 1.1 million barrels of oil every week.” You can’t get much more local than your own backyard. Check out GoFarm! at www.go-farm.com or give them a call at 512-653-9179.

Step N2 Stain&Stamp,Inc Take a step forward on a stained & stamped concrete floor. A beautiful floor or a uniquely finished surface gives any space the look and feel of luxury. After six successful years, the concrete specialists at Stain&Stamp, Inc have developed artistic looks for both interior and exterior settings that capture the Central Texas lifestyle in a fresh, polished, and relaxed way. The versatility of concrete can transform any décor. Stain & Stamp, Inc surfaces are easy to maintain, adding value and curb appeal to any residence or business. Take a step forward on a stained & stamped concrete floor. Owner Shane Johnson sat down with us recently to answer our questions about his amazing business. We are delighted to share it with our readers. What inspired you to open a business in Central Texas? I love Central Texas! I wanted a better future for myself and the ones I love. I decided to put my artistic abilities to work and we have been able to produce a cost effective product that is unique, beautiful, and personal to our clients. The design options are only limited by their imagination. What is your favorite aspect of the business? We enjoy fulfilling our customer’s expectations and often we go beyond them. We help our clients to think creatively, outside the box. When the design options are unlimited, it’s exciting to incorporate their ideas, personality, and décor in something as simple and cost effective as concrete. We assist them in creating an environment which is a reflection of their personal style. What do you see in the future for flooring? Stain & Stamp is so much more than flooring—concrete has enormous potential from flooring and sidewalks, to driveways, pool decks, and countertops. Decorative concrete has been around for decades, however, over the past several years the industry has exploded with new products, techniques, and tools which have in turn allowed clients not only to use concrete to replace tile, wood, and other types of flooring, but also to create unique or custom surfaces that compliment their décor and lifestyle. What type of clients do you attract? Our clients come from all over Central Texas and beyond. We attract clients that are building new projects and are looking for sustainable surfaces that are beautiful and low maintenance. Our clients include investment property owners and home owners that want to remodel and are tired of spending money on replacing carpet, vinyl, tile, and wood surfaces. Some of our clients want to add curb appeal to their home or business and we can help them do that in attractive, affordable ways. Are your products environmentally conscious? We take the safety of our clients and the environment very seriously. Our products are all lead-compliant. This industry is going green and there are many eco friendly benefits. Our services include custom stamping, acid stain, concrete countertops, spray texture, polished concrete modello designs, engraving, and interior/exterior and commercial/residential applications. We believe concrete is the future of quality surfaces. Stain and Stamp Inc. is a proud member of Our Central Texas community. They add to the beauty of our homes and workplaces every day. Visit their website at www.stainandstamp.com or Phone/Fax: 888-64-CRETE (27383) / 210-855-3535.

The Lorena Promenade The traditions of past and present have been given a fresh, new face in Lorena. The Lorena Promenade is a celebration of great traditions such as debuts, formals, and other rites of passage. These traditions never looked better. Young gentlemen and young ladies prepare for the event by donning elegant attire, complete with corsages and boutonnieres. They gather on the elegant balcony of local merchant, Just For You Antiques in Lorena. Family and friends gather below, smiling and beaming with pride, as the young people present themselves to the crowd of admiring spectators. As the promenade begins, music and applause fill the air. The event takes place on April 25 as a prelude to that often magical evening that today we refer to simply as Prom. This is a special way to begin that evening and capture it in hearts and in photographs. With a look over the shoulder and a nod to the past, the well dressed participants take a step N2 the future at the Lorena Promenade.

Are you...

If you have not been to an N2 Social, you have missed out on some good fun with great people. N2 Socials are terrific opportunities to visit exciting Central Texas businesses, meet new friends and neighbors, and network the community. Included in our March issue is an invitation to an N2 Social in Waco hosted by our friends at the Elite Circle Grille. It is sure to be tasty! In April, join us again in Waco at the beautiful San Jose Jewelers. We also enjoyed some terrific opportunities to be involved in our Central Texas community last month. We love to add our sponsorship to worthy causes and volunteer when the opportunities arise.

Check out these party

pix of some of our favorite clients and new friends. Get N2 Social in March.

The Women In Leadership Committee of the Temple Chamber of Commerce are currently taking donations of dresses, shoes, jewelry, hair and nail services for Project Prom. Cash donations are welcomed as well. Prom Night is April 18 for Temple High School. The committee aims to help fifty deserving young ladies attend prom this year. Without these donations, these young ladies would not be able to participate in this happy celebration of accomplishment. Donations of dresses, shoes, and jewelry can be dropped off at the Temple Chamber of Commerce or at the Bell County Junior League’s Second Hand Rose store in Temple. Donations of services or cash can be made through the Chamber of Commerce. Please help these young ladies attend their senior prom! Women In Leadership is a committee of the Temple Chamber of Commerce. The mission of Women in Leadership is to provide resources and services through education, networking, and public awareness. We hope to empower women to assume leadership positions and achieve personal and professional growth. Committee members are not required to be in management or leadership positions and include a number of men as well. Membership is open to all who are interested. For more information, please contact the Temple Chamber of Commerce at 254-773-2105.
