This group of ten to 12 students reaches out to the community, schools, and festivals to provide concert performances, lecture demonstrations, and master classes. Guest choreographers from across the nation and alumni are engaged to create dances for the ensemble. The National Choreography Competition identifies and recognizes emerging choreographers and brings their work to campus. You could be among the students to work with the winning artist and create a new dance for the annual Winter Gala Dance Concert .

The Department of Dance is committed to providing professional immersion experiences that lay the groundwork for a smooth transition from student to dance professional. Graduates of the program have gone on to perform with Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, Keigwin+Company, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Abraham in Motion, and the Rockettes, among many others. Alumni have been accepted into prestigious graduate dance programs, while others run successful dance studios or teach in community colleges and universities.

Alumni from the WMU Department of Theatre are working at theatres across the country including The Steppenwolf Theatre, The Goodman Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Lincoln Center, Sundance Festival, and Royal Shakespeare Company (England). They are working on cruise ships, for Disney and on Broadway in such shows as West Side Story, Avenue Q, Fun Home, Bullets Over Broadway, Hamilton, Phantom of the Opera, and Jersey Boys. You can find theatre alumni on television acting, casting, producing, designing, and directing in such shows as Lost, Drop Dead Diva, Desperate Housewives, Chicago Fire, and Boston Legal. Additionally, WMU theatre alums have gone on to study at graduate programs such as ART/Harvard, Yale, Cal Arts, Carnegie Mellon University, Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, Case Western University, Northwestern University, UCLA, and The National Theatre Conservatory.

The Frostic School Art was built with one of the single largest gifts in the University’s history. The environmentallyconscious facility is 140,000 square feet of galleries, studios, classrooms, critique space, and more. The Richmond Center for Visual Arts is made up of three large galleries: • The Albertine Monroe-Brown Gallery features exhibitions of contemporary artists known throughout the world. • The Rose Netzorg and James W. Kerr Gallery houses special exhibits that coincide with our curriculum. • The Eleanor R. and Robert A. DeVries Gallery is dedicated to student exhibitions.

The WMU School of Music is housed in the Dorothy U. Dalton Center, which boasts 157,000 square feet of some of the finest music rehearsal, study, practice and performance spaces in the world. The WMU School of Music is an All-Steinway School. Esteemed faculty run high-tech studios. The Department of Dance is also located in the Dalton Center. The program combines ballet, jazz, and modern instruction in three large studios and one medium studio. Floating floors, a piano, percussion instruments, and sound playback units enhance the learning experience in each studio. The conditioning room is equipped with four Pilates reformers and other equipment.

The Irving S. Gilmore Theatre Complex houses three performance spaces for the Department of Theatre: the Laura V. Shaw Theatre, the D. Terry Williams Theatre, and the Zack L. York Arena Theatre. At the University Theatre, faculty and students collaborate to create over 15 productions annually. These acclaimed performances are open to the public at the Gilmore Theatre Complex.
