OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts ts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in degradable plastic.

elissa Hourigan is like most parents. She wants the best for her child. She wants to live in a society that allows children to be who they are without the labels. She is seeking acceptance and hopes to one day live in a world where people willingly understand how challenging and difficult life can be for some children. Melissa’s son is among a rapidly growing number of Australians living with autism. The Sunshine Coast mother shares her story with journalist Sarah Morgan who, in this week’s feature story, attempts to break down the barriers associated with autism. Meanwhile, Leigh Robshaw speaks with up-and-coming singer-songwriter Doolie Shadforth, who looks set for stardom in the near future. Don’t miss our School Holiday Fun Guide starting on page 37, filled with fun activities to keep the kids active and busy these school holidays. In our Property section, Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane looks at six reasons why our property market is the healthiest it has ever been. We also have lots of news, opinions, fashion and entertainment. Enjoy.

QUICK CHAT

MAKE ’EM LAUGH For the past 15 years, Rocco the Clown’s Swiss-born creator George Farmer has volunteered his time to bring joy to others. CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Little Mountain. It’s only a 10-minute drive from the beach.

The decision to emigrate from Switzerland to Australia changed my whole life. A new language, culture and the way of life had to be absorbed. In a way the move to Australia let me find myself. I always loved making my own pastries, so I became a baker. Australia let me do that – follow my dream. When I looked for a change after 10 years in the bakehouse, my desire for creativity led me to diversional therapy.

FIRST JOB? Working as an upholsterer in a office chair factory in Adelaide. I was saving up to come to Queensland. To go to work I used my roller skates and not the bus to save money. Back then roller skates were rather a novelty. In the mall I was once stopped by a police officer. First he was very stern until he realised I could not speak very good English and he was then very courteous explaining the law to me.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

To receive the Sunshine Coast Council Senior Citizen of the Year 2017 award for visiting Sunshine Coast hospitals and nursing homes as Rocco the Clown. I am a member of Coastal Caring Clowns. To receive this award is an overwhelming and humbling experience.

Developing and delivering activity programs in a respite centre for aged persons. I have a certificate in diversional therapy. All my previous learning in life was useful in this occupation.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES…

FIRST CAR? A brown Holden HJ Kingswood. I was learning to drive on the left side of the road, when taking a turn I got to the wrong side of the road. To avoid oncoming traffic I ended up in the ditch. The 20-dozen eggs I picked up were all ready for omelettes.

FAVOURITE BOOK?

YOUR ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? When I can make others happy. I also love listening to music. I have no musical training but play with bells and an autoharp. Music also plays a part in my work and when clowning.

IMAGE: TRACY NAUGHTON

My partner, her three adult children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I have a sister-in-law and niece in Australia and relatives in Switzerland.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU MOST? Situations where good ideas, undertakings or projects are subjected to ignorance and indifference.

HOW DO YOU DO DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATION?

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?

Green Mountains by Bernard O’Reilly.

The lifestyle, the nature and climate appealed to me. It was easy to integrate; the people were welcoming.

With a lot of patience. I listen to music, enjoy the garden or spend a weekend away. Reading also helps me to switch off.

The Amazing Mrs Livesey by Freda Marnie Nicholls. It is a remarkable account of Australia’s greatest imposter.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?

FAVOURITE SONG?

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Lately, we like to spend weekends at Noosaville and enjoy the parks along the Noosa River. I also like the hinterland and the ranges. The rolling hills remind me of my childhood.

Don’t see things only in black and white. Step into other people’s shoes. Treasure your friends.

“Go and focus on your way,” said my mother. It meant to stick to what I was doing and not be distracted.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I like tea not too strong, with no milk or sugar. I am also happy with all sorts of herbal teas.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?

Upgrade the Bruce Highway to three lanes 10 years ago.

NRL OR AFL?

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

I came to the Sunshine Coast in 1984 and have stayed very much in the same area of Caloundra.

After schooling, apprenticeship and army service, the first day after finishing service and that feeling that I was free.

As I grew up in Switzerland I follow soccer and love the Aussie team when they play. I played soccer at school as it was a team game and I enjoyed the strategy aspect of the game.

When AustrianAmerican psychiatrist and physician Leo Kanner first identified autism in 1943, he believed the lack of warmth among parents of autistic children was the cause of autism, which led to the creation of the term. This has been widely discredited by mental health professionals and is not supported by the medical community.

FEATURE STORY

UNDERSTANDING AUTISM It’s a global condition that is affecting more and more families every year, yet there are still many misconceptions about autism. MWP meets those who live with autism and who are working to shed light on this misunderstood condition. WORDS: Sarah Morgan.

t’s not often that Sesame Street, Power Rangers, the Israeli Defence Force and Microsoft all have something in common. But despite their obvious differences, they all share a relatively new appreciation and support for what has long been a misunderstood condition – autism. It’s a complicated condition, and is defined as a developmental disorder, which manifests as impaired or restricted social interaction, communication and behaviour. It is best summed up in cases where those with it have great difficulty forming relationships and communicating with others, but it stretches way beyond that. Some may be aware of other traits made famous by movies such as Rain Man, or records of great feats of memory and skill, and it’s these aspects that are being seen as valuable assets to both the people with the condition and society in general. Statistics show about 230,000 Australians have the condition, but because the condition is on the rise, that number could be much greater. Recent advances in awareness are also beginning to highlight those people who have often been overlooked. Recently, producers of both Sesame Street and Power Rangers have announced they are introducing new characters to their shows – characters who are on the autism spectrum. In recent years the Israeli Defence Force has started actively recruiting soldiers on the autism spectrum for their selective intelligence squad, named Unit 9900. These soldiers, who previously would have been made exempt from military service, are now head hunted to serve thanks to their heightened perceptual skills. In the business world, Microsoft, German software company SAP and American companies Freddie Mac and Walgreens are corporations who are also actively sourcing employees with autism to work on special projects. It all paints a very different picture from when children with autism were instantly sent to institutions or shut away from society upon diagnosis. But despite these efforts there is still a long way to go. Buderim’s Melissa Hourigan has witnessed firsthand prejudice towards her son Isaac, who was diagnosed with autism two years ago. “People are scared of autism,” Hourigan says. “I have experienced situations where parents have made a point of moving their children away from Isaac. I want acceptance for him. I really want to see a society where we let them be without labels. Autism is still seen as a scary title and it needn’t be.” Hourigan says days such as the World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, are a good

start towards raising awareness. “The future is scary,” she says. “I would love to spend a day in Isaac’s body and see what he sees and feels. If people could actually be in his shoes for a day and see what a challenge life can be and how tough it can be, we would all be more understanding of what he and his peers go through.” A lack of understanding can also make it difficult for people on the autism spectrum to have their condition recognised and to access support. Research shows that misconceptions about autism can lead to some with the condition feeling isolated and alone. It can also lead to abuse and bullying. Autism carries a stigma and much needs to be done to remove it, says Sunshine Coast psychologist Tania Marshall, who has worked in the field for more than 20 years. Marshall has operated the Sunshine Coast Centre for Autism for the past five years and says the first step is breaking down stereotypes. “Autistic characters are becoming more mainstream in TV shows and movies, which can be good for awareness, but not so great in terms of people thinking that all autistic people are the same,” Marshall says. “They are all very different and have unique profiles.” Another myth Marshall combats is that only boys have autism. “The numbers of girls diagnosed with autism is growing exponentially. Most of the research is based on a male profile, and females are left out.” This led Marshall to write the AspienGirl books, which explore autism in girls. Marshall says the ratio of boys to girls with autism is likely to be 2:1 or 1:1 in the future as more research on females with autism is released. As vital as it is to offer support to children with autism, working with the parents of

myths Autism spectrum disorder comes with a host of myths and misconceptions. These are the most common: • autism is caused by vaccination • kids with autism don’t want to make friends • children with autism can’t learn • autism is caused by bad parenting • it’s common for people with autism to have savant skills • people with autism don’t have emotions • eating a certain type of food causes autism. FEATURE STORY those children is equally important, Marshall says. “If you suspect your child has autism I strongly recommend you see a paediatrician who is both trained and experienced in this field,” she says. “Make sure they have seen more than 50 individuals with autism so they know all the different presentations types. “Autistic traits go from mild to severe. If on the milder end they may not be picked up until later on. The earlier the diagnosis, the better it is for intervention.” Marshall says while every person is different, a big flag for many parents is linked to social settings. “When they are on their own they are fine, when another person comes into the mix you will start to see social difficulties,” she says.“Some other signs can be struggling to make eye contact, not responding to verbal communication or not looking when someone points to something. “As babies they might be quite distressed with sensory processing issues. Often they

something. We went to a speech therapist and occupational therapist, but I knew it was something else. I started to Google autism and started to tick all the boxes. “After we got the diagnosis, I sat in the carpark and cried my eyes out, mainly because we had an answer. I felt empowered by it. It was like, ‘OK we’ve got the diagnosis, now what do we do?’ I need a plan. “I was lucky that I had an easy process to get a diagnosis; some people really struggle to get a diagnosis and have to really push.” Marshall says early diagnosis, intervention and working and supporting the whole family is another step towards a more inclusive society. “Don’t be afraid to be the squeaky wheel. You are your child’s advocate, and while it’s scary there are support networks out there. Try not to stress about the future and just take each day as it comes. “Autistic people are different, not less, as [renowned autism spokesperson] Dr Temple

struggle to sleep or smile back, but these are just some of the signs.” Hourigan advises parents who suspect their child might have autism to follow their instinct and not waver until they have answers. “I had a gut feeling something wasn’t quite right as he wasn’t developing like his brother or others around us,” she says. “I began wondering was it just shyness, as we had a lot of things going on at the time. “He would avoid talking and making eye contact in certain social situations. When he went to kindy we started to see him regress. It wasn’t a huge regression, but it was

Grandin says, ‘They are capable, when given the chance. Diversity in people and in brains is what makes society flourish.’ Autistic people don’t need to be fixed, just made aware of, understood, accepted and supported. “They do need support in some areas so that they can be their best selves, but so does everybody,” Marshall adds. “We are realising the strengths, abilities and talents of people with autism and nurturing them is very important. People on the spectrum are making enormous contributions to society. Autistic people are often futurists

Hamish Finlayson or inventors.” One such person is 12-year-old Hamish Finlayson from Townsville, who was diagnosed with autism just before his sixth birthday. Driven to change the perceptions of people with autism, Hamish has developed a comprehensive project called Autism Moonshot. As part of the project, he has developed an app called ASDandMe. “Autism Moonshot teaches people what it is like and simple strategies to manage some of the more common problems people with autism have, like managing stress, dealing with loud noises and recognising emotions,” Hamish says. “I’ve tried to do this in a fun way through games, which also link to my website for extra information and let people donate to cool charities like Autism Queensland and Autism Speaks. “Lots of people don’t understand what autism is or how it affects people, so people are afraid of autism. I want to change this and help improve the lives of people with autism, as well as their families and caregivers.” Last year, Hamish was invited to attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Silicon Valley. Former US President Barack Obama spoke, while former secretary of state John Kerry gave Hamish a special shout out as the youngest entrepreneur to attend. Through the summit, Hamish was able to connect with start-ups and people from the US, China, Australia and the UK to assist in developing his ideas. Hamish taught himself how to develop apps. “I’ve had some adults with autism send me emails to say how important my apps and sites have been to them in gaining a better

understanding about autism and helping them,” he says. “I want to break down barriers and make life easier for people with autism and their families.” Hamish is now working on a multi-player platform to help people connect with each other when playing the app. As part of the wider Autism Moonshot project, he is also hoping to build virtual reality apps that can help people with autism improve their life and social skills. “Last week, I pitched my ideas in 3D virtual reality to SAP China and Hao2.eu in London. I presented my pitch to them through an avatar and slide pack in the 3D world from my home,” Hamish says. Hamish adds, “No two autistic people are the same and it’s with you for life. It’s not a phase you go through. World Autism Awareness Day is important because the rest of the world that doesn’t have autism don’t really understand it or know how to help, so the day can give people tips about it. “What’s really important to remember is that after the day is over, autism is still with me, and people like me, 24/7. And their families have to also manage with that too. “It’s something you live with every day.” Hopefully, Hamish’s incredible work, as well as the increased awareness by corporations and the wider community will help society take that extra step towards a more acceptance and awareness.

WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY The sails of the Sydney Opera House will be lit on April 2 to mark the United Nations’ World Autism Awareness Day. Part of a global awareness campaign, the Opera House is the first building to turn blue each year, followed by other global landmarks. April 2 also marks the start of Autism Awareness Month in Australia and Autism Queensland’s Go Blue for Autism initiative. April 2 is such a significant day for the autism community worldwide. It’s an opportunity to recognise all those who are on the spectrum, their abilities, their strengths and their contribution to our community.

United Airlines has released a statement saying “leggings are welcome” after it found itself caught in a social media storm after refusing to allow two teenage girls to board their flight because they were wearing leggings. The airline was accused of sexism and of policing women’s dress after it stopped the girls from flying from Denver to Minneapolis on Sunday. Chrissy Teigen, the model, weighed in on the issue on Twitter.

FINALLY, YOU CAN SIA… Sia was spotted at LAX airport without her signature wig, letting everyone see her normally concealed face. Getting a glimpse of the Australian singer’s face is a rare treat, as she usually keeps her identity concealed. The singer has spoken in the past about why she hides her face. “I don’t want to be famous, or recognisable,” she explained. “I don’t want to be critiqued about the way that I look on the internet.”

12–24 YEARS

ARTISTS REQUIRED FOR IMMANUEL ARTS FESTIVAL

Artists Jill and Lyndon Braiden

Sunshine Coast artists of all ages and abilities are encouraged to enter the 37th Immanuel Arts Festival. There are categories for students and established artists in painting, sculpture, mixed media, photography and more. A long-standing event on the Sunshine Coast’s cultural calendar, the Festival will be held from May 25 to 28 and is an opportunity for local artists to showcase their talent and increase their public profile. Anyone from emerging to established artists are welcome to enter. Entries close on April 7. Proudly supported by My Weekly Preview. Visit immanuelartsfestival.com.au for information.

STUDENTS TAKE 10-DAY TRIP TO HELP BATTLING FARMERS High school students from Suncoast Christian College will travel to the outback for 10 days alongside Coast-based charity Care Outreach to lend a hand to battling Australian farming families. This will be the College’s third year partnering with the charity to assist in outback Queensland and Ellie Williamson who was in grade 12 on bring some much needed cheer to the last year’s outback trip remote communities. The students will be working on drought affected stations in the Roma, Charleville region where they will be assisting the farmers with fencing, yard work, repairs and livestock. A major project the students are tackling this year is the restoration of the Nebine Community Centre, with Sunshine Mitre 10 providing $500 worth of supplies.

ACTVE HOTEL PLANS SET TO BE LODGED Sanad Capital is set to submit plans for phase two of Australia’s first ‘Active Lifestyle’ project, code named ACTVE. This stage features an upscale hotel with approximately 200 rooms, which will be built on the north-west sector of the plot, next to the entrance on Steve Irwin Way at Glenview. The Sunshine Coast Council gave the green light for phase one of the project, which includes the highly anticipated waterpark. The hotel will comprise restaurants, a sports bar and lounge, pool bar and grill, fitness and leisure facilities as well as kids clubs. A convention centre is planned to cater to business travellers, as well as for meeting and incentive groups of Sunshine Coast organisations.

The Sunshine Coast Council is looking for young people aged 12 to 24 to help them create a new Youth Action Plan that aims to strengthen how young people participate and contribute to the community. The council’s Speak Up Engage youth program participant and 2017 Sunshine Coast Citizen of the Year Jak Hardy says the survey is a great platform for young people to have a voice. “All you have to do is take a few moments to complete the youth survey and share your thoughts and opinions,” he says. To respond, visit sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, search ‘young people’ and complete the Youth Participation Survey.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN AT CALOUNDRA GALLERY There’s creativity and fun to be had for kids of all ages at Caloundra Regional Gallery these school holidays. The gallery foyer will be transformed into a creative interactive art space from April 4 to 6, with a range of free flowing activities on offer. Each day will feature a new activity for primary and secondary aged children created and facilitated by arts worker Samantha Relihan and inspired by the current exhibition Close Enough: Young Queensland Artists. For a full list of activities, visit gallery.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. To see what else you can enjoy on the Coast these holidays, check out our School Holiday Fun Guide from page 37.

There’s never been a better time to live and work on the Sunshine Coast, and it’s only going to get brighter. We’ve started building the city of the future in Maroochydore, and it’s got Australia watching. Let’s show them what we can do.

$1.1 MILLION

LOCAL ONLINE STRATEGIST MEETS THE TERMINATOR Sunshine Coast business owner David Krauter last week came face to face with The Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, when he visited Sydney for the Total Success Summit 2017. “He was wearing a suit and white Adidas shoes, it was really funny,” Krauter says of the Hollywood heavyweight. Fashion aside, it was Schwarzenegger’s humble nature that really struck a chord with Krauter, whose business, Websites That Sell, created the website for the star-studded event, which saw Arnie joined by the likes of former The Biggest Loser trainer Michelle Bridges and TV personality John McGrath.

AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR HONOURED WITH KEY TO CITY Australian of the Year for 2017, Emeritus Professor Alan Mackay-Sim, has received a Key to the City, from the Sunshine Coast Council for his lifetime of dedicated research and international leadership. The Currimundi resident led the world’s first clinical trial using nasal cells in treating spinal cord injuries, a precursor to the world’s first restoration of mobility in a quadriplegic person. Mayor Mark Jamieson says without this work, many new breakthroughs in medical science may not be possible. “We are very proud to have Professor Mackay-Sim as part of our Sunshine Coast community and I’m delighted we have been able to honour him in this way,” Jamieson says.

HELP FOR YOUTH Sunshine Coast young people are being given greater access to mental health support with Headspace Maroochydore offering an increased number of after-hours appointments, with two additional staff members every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening. While Headspace Maroochydore sees over 1150 young people aged 12 to 25 every year, it was identified last year that a number of families were finding it difficult to make appointments through the day and needed options outside work and school hours. For more information about Headspace, or to book an appointment please call 5409 4900 or visit headspace.org.au.

Sunshine Coast aged care services that support seniors living independently at home are set to receive an extra $1.1 million under the Federal Government’s Commonwealth Home Support Program. Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien says the additional funding will support seniors who are assessed as needing assistance with household chores, preparing meals, personal care and home maintenance. The funding is equally split across the Sunshine Coast with Fairfax receiving $553,049 and Fisher $552,351. The CHSP supports more than 640,000 older people nationally.

KABI KABI FIRST NATION WALK ON COUNTRY The cultural heritage and significance of the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project site was recognised in a special ceremony featuring Kabi Kabi First Nation representatives. The moving 45-minute occasion featured a smoking ceremony as the Kabi Kabi connected with spirit before walking on country in the footsteps of their people. Among those in attendance was Auntie Bessie Bond, the oldest living Kabi Kabi member. The ceremony follows the council’s endorsement of its Reconciliation Action Plan 2017–2019. The Plan includes the establishment of a First Peoples Advisory Committee, which will assist council in the oversight and implementation of this new RAP for the Sunshine Coast.

The perennially youthful actor took to Instagram recently to share photos of her beauty cabinet jam-packed with face masks, lotions and potions. aintaining your boundaries, values and beliefs allows your sense of moral standards to be congruent with who you are. When you allow these to be crossed on an ongoing basis, either emotionally or otherwise, it may lead you into long-term situations that have disastrous effects on your quality of life, health, and happiness. Understanding that others have a different set of values means you can’t expect another person to maintain your boundaries for you. Having the strength to say no when necessary to maintain what is right for you is a valuable trait for life and can take some practise, or you may be left feeling not only emotionally overwhelmed, but it may lead to physical illness. High-stress lifestyles can lead to migraines, depression, pain, hormone imbalance, low immunity, autoimmune

or other serious disease. The need to be polite, to avoid conflict, or to protect others sometimes takes precedence over your own values, to make someone else happy, though may lead to feeling compromised yourself. When the cost becomes too great, it may be time to begin to maintain your boundaries, and reduce your risk of illness, improving your quality of life. Being aware of a ‘people pleasing’ nature, and learning where the line is for yourself, understanding that there is a balance between being supportive while still maintaining your boundaries, is not selfish and is necessary for you to live a life you can be proud of.

band are aiming high as far as the development of live performances in the next couple of years. “This year she’s focusing on touring and releasing some big tunes that will help her emerge and gather more momentum. She’s on an interesting trajectory – she has gathering label interest but that’s not even necessary at this stage in the modern industry. She could forge ahead as an independent artist; she’s done everything independently so far.” Doolie is a natural on stage and says the only time she gets nervous is when she’s performing the national anthem, which she has done at the Sunshine Coast Marathon, the Ironman World Championships and the Melbourne Cup celebrations at Corbould Park. “When I have to sing the national anthem I get really nervous because you’re not allowed to mess that song up,” she laughs. But when she is performing her own

ver since Doolie Shadforth picked up a toy guitar at the age of four and started belting out Avril Lavigne tunes, she’s been destined for stardom. Doolie is an easy name to remember – even more so when you hear her sing. The 18-year-old singer-songwriter who grew up on the Sunshine Coast has a lot going for her as she pursues a career as a recording artist, least of all an unusual name that sticks in your mind. Doolie was her great-grandmother’s name and seems tailor-made for fame. She’s also a stunner, but it’s her talent and a steely determination to succeed that sets her apart. “I want to go to all lengths and do whatever it takes to succeed and I don’t see myself doing anything else,” she says. “I definitely see myself performing and entertaining people. I’ve always wanted to be a star, but it was last year I decided [I was] going to do anything to get it.” She attracted industry attention last year when she won the schools category of the Queensland Music Awards, butt it was also personal confirmation she’s on the right path. Between visiting her boyfriend Ben in Byron Bay and travelling up and down the coast for shows in Byron, the Gold Coast, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, she’s on the road a lot. She listens to Anderson Paak or Goldlink on herr car stereo and her influences range from George Maple and nd Airling to Syd Tha Kyd. The day we speak, her voice is husky and she sounds tired – but not too tired to play her first headlining show att the Solbar that evening. Two nights earlier, she had pulled an all-nighter, recording from 10.30pm to 6.30am in a studio at Griffith University on the Gold Coast, where she recently embarked on her first year of a Bachelor of Popular Music. Based on the Gold Coast while she completes her degree, she still visits her family on the Sunshine Coast regularly, catching up with parents Nina and Michael and her “best friend”, Ockie the Jack Russell. “I loved growing up here,” she says. “There were so many kids in the street around the same age, everyone hung around. I loved growing up near the beach.” A Sunshine Coast Grammar School student, she performed in school musicals, choirs and bands along with her sister Madie, who sings back-up vocals in her band, and gained a local reputation for her beautiful vocals. She says music doesn’t run in the family – dad Michael is a well-known real estate agent and mum Nina is a mover and shaker in the art world. Nina is Doolie’s manager and both parents are “100 per cent supportive” of her chosen career. She has recorded two singles and a video with local music

producer Elliot Heinrich of Heliport Studios, who is producing new tracks for her and says she’s no flash-in-the-pan starlet. “I’ve worked with her over a couple of years now and all the signs are pointing to definite label interest,” he says. “She shows maturity, stage presence and vocal talent far beyond her years. She has an aptitude for composing and lyrically writing about things that are universal but encapsulate what it’s like to be an adolescent and a youth – she has quite a unique perspective on those things. It’s exciting as a producer to come across that lyrical insight; it’s quite rare. “Vocally, she’s got the range and the training of a great jazz voice, but applying that to a pop context is really commanding. I’ve played with her at festivals and she holds her own for someone so young. She has the ability to command big audiences and as she develops, her and the

“I want to go to all lengths and do whatever it takes to succeed. I’ve always wanted to be a star” sultry, alt-pop ballads, she feels nothing but excitement. One of the highlights of her career was playing at the Caloundra Music Festival solo last year, where she found a new fan base. “I was on before Montaigne and a whole lot of people came to line up to see her and I was still playing so I got to play to a whole bunch of people,” she says. Doolie’s unpretentious personality combined with her star quality could well see her become the next big thing, but while she dreams of one day taking the stage at Coachella, she’s not in a hurry. “I’ve had a lot of feedback from major industry people giving me really good ideas and a lot of encouragement,” she says. “But I’m so young so I’ve still got so much time to push myself. I only just left school so I can really push myself this year.”

Doolie will perform at the Sea N Sound Festival in Mooloolaba on June 10.

SUPER STRATEGY – THE CHOICE IS YOURS Troy Davey is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

I

n the lead-up to June 30 there are a number of key decisions some will need to make in relation to their superannuation savings. One question that needs to be answered – is the transition to retirement strategy still worth it? By way of background, from July 1, 2017 investment earnings generated from assets backing a transition to retirement strategy will be taxed at 15 per cent (that same as it is in accumulation made). Currently these earnings are not taxed. Additionally, the concessional contribution (or pre-tax contribution) level is dropping to $25,000 from July 1, 2017. Currently it is $35,000 for those of who can actually access the transition to retirement strategy.

myweeklypreview.com.au

25.indd 1

The remaining rules around transition to retirement strategies are unchanged. The taxable component of pension payments are subject to tax at your marginal rate of tax (less a 15 per cent rebate) for those under the age of 60. The tax-free component of your pension payment will continue to be received free of tax. For those over age 60, your pension payments are received free of tax. Further, you are required to draw a pension payment of between four per cent and 10 per cent of your balance each financial year. For those of you who currently have a transition to retirement strategy in place, it is likely that you are maximising your concessional contribution through salary sacrifice arrangements or personal deductible contributions, and replacing that sacrificed income with pension drawings from your transition to retirement pension. In short, this can provide you with a handy little tax saving – it all counts! Moving forward, this strategy will unfortunately lose much of its tax-saving appeal. So you must decide whether or not

“Is the transition to retirement strategy still worth it?” to continue on with the strategy. You may be best served to move the funds back into accumulation mode so you are actually saving for your retirement. Ultimately, the transition to retirement

pension was implemented into law so that individuals could move into retirement in a gradual process and replace the income they lose by reducing their working hours. Since this was implemented, the strategy has been used to save individuals tax and assist with their wealth accumulation strategies. The government has altered the rules around the transition to retirement pension so that individuals make use of them for their intended purpose – replace the income the individual forgoes by gradually retiring. So as we approach June 30 (it will be here soon), you must consider whether or not the transition to retirement strategy is right for you. MY OPINION

B

LOOK OUT

A POWERFUL COMBINATION

Sami Muirhead says we are being watched, and it’s our wheelie bins that are doing the watching.

The region’s new netball team is helping our reputation as a tourist destination, says Simon Latchford.

ig Brother is watching our rubbish bins. It’s true. All our dirty little secrets are being revealed. News broke this week that more bins across Australia are being fitted out with a special computer tags that tell the council how much rubbish we are throwing out and even what sort of rubbish we are tipping. Just under the rim of the new bins, away from prying eyes, is a small circular device known as a radio frequency identification device, or RFID tag. It’s all part of the way our everyday items are changing. You can now buy fridges that somehow tell you when your food is about to expire. If we had one of those fridges in our household it would probably go on strike from being overworked. We always seem to have six jars of half-used Vegemite in the fridge and a few jars of Thai cooking paste that expired back in 2014. And I am THAT person who still has Easter eggs in the fridge from last year. But back to the whacky wheelie bins. They actually sound more creepy than whacky. The tracking devices can tell if your bin is light and this may mean you’re not recycling enough. Following this logic it will be able to tell how many empty wine bottles are ditched every week from our house! They can also tell which house number

in a street the bin belongs to so do not even think of swiping someone else’s bin. Our bin is putrid. The lid broke years ago and my hubby thought he was a handyman when he used cable ties to attach the lid back to the base of the bin. So the lid sort of half hangs off its hinges. This makes it nice and easy for flies to come and go, but I do not have the heart to tell my husband that his DIY really needs some improvement. If you were going to steal a bin from our street you would go to our neighbour’s home. Joy and John disinfect their bin each week. With Pine O Cleen. The good stuff. Joy has even taken to giving my bin the once over because she has seen how filthy it is. We are not worthy to live in the same street as this bin benchmark. There are no plans for our local council to get these new bin tracking devices as yet. Apparently a little camera can be easily added. Phew, I hear you all say. But what about when we all do that mad dash early morning to get the wheelie bin out because we have forgotten it is bin day and we are only half-dressed? Are these cameras going to flash us flashing them? I mean, that could be some seriously saucy action. Well, it could have been back in the day, but without a bra on so early in the morning that camera may be capturing way more than it bargained for.

“I am THAT person who still has Easter eggs in the fridge from last year”

ith International Women’s Day held recently, I would like to pay tribute to our newest ambassadors, Sunshine Coast Lightning. I was fortunate enough to be at their first two matches – a thrilling draw in Brisbane and then a pulsating win in their first home game – and anyone who has been present at one of their games would have felt the power and the passion that these incredibly talented sportswomen bring to the sport. Equally impressive is the fact they are just as good ambassadors off the court as they are on it. Last month, we invited the Today program up to the Sunshine Coast in advance of the Lightning’s first home game and all the team joined Stevie Jacobs down at Cotton Tree to share their enthusiasm for the sport and spruik their new ‘home’ to a massive national audience. Hundreds of local netballers joined the players, and with a beautiful backdrop, it’s not surprising that Today loves coming to the Sunshine Coast – it is set to return with a full broadcast from Australia Zoo on April 7. The impact of Lightning is a reflection of the Sunshine Coast Council’s very far-sighted view on tourism and events. Lightning is much more than a sporting team, they’re a national billboard for what makes the Coast an attractive destination. They are travelling around the country

and in front of packed houses and via national TV coverage, they will leave people with an indelible memory of the Sunshine Coast. It really builds on our narrative that the Sunshine Coast is a place where health, fitness and sport blend naturally with the landscape. It also provides a big boost for the region’s reputation as a premium destination for events. It is fitting that while Lightning are blazing a trail on the netball court, our tourism industry has attracted our highest ever increase in international visitors with 231,000 arrivals visiting last year up 19.9 per cent and contributing $266 million

“The Lightning are just as good ambassadors off the court as on” in visitor expenditure to the economy. The growth in international visitor expenditure was 36.4 per cent. This really highlights the commitment by all operators and has been a great regional team effort. The tourism and events focus is set to get even sharper with the announcement of special events designed to celebrate the Sunshine Coast’s 50th anniversary. Who knows, we might even be able to celebrate that milestone with Lightning taking out the national netball championship in their first year.

ook kids. One day there will be houses through here,” my father said, as we bumped along the dirt road between Mooloolaba and Caloundra in his old Kombi van. It was the dawn of the 1960s and we sincerely thought the old man had taken leave of his senses. The idea of houses being built in this remote place, with scattered wind-beaten trees and beach grass leading down to sand dunes on one side and swamp on the other, was absurd. The road was rocky as well as full of potholes, and when the old Kombi went down with a flat tyre just on dusk, it was a family drama akin to being stuck somewhere west of the black stump. My father, of course, was right. Half a century later, not only are there houses and grand canal estates, but also huge commercial and industrial centres – and a huge new hospital – way beyond the wildest dreams of any picnicking families of the 1960s. By the time I was a teenager, that spot where we had picked up the flat tyre would

be known as Kawana and the rocky road sealed and called Nicklin Way. When it was sealed in 1964, and bridges built over Currimundi Creek and the Mooloolah River, it ran like a black ribbon through a wilderness, swept by sand storms that were driven by winds unstopped by vegetation or housing. Officially opened in 1965, it was promoted as “6½ miles of double lane bitumen between Caloundra and Mooloolaba with underground pipe drainage throughout”. The proposal that got it all started was a subdivision put forward by the Alfred Grant development company. The company had purchased 160 acres of freehold land from Arthur and Cyril Parkyn in 1959. Its subdivision, which it called Kawana, was approved in May 1960 and Alfred Grant advertised the sale of allotments at “Buddina Beach” from £495 and offered a 10 per cent discount for cash. The only high land was the headland at Point Cartwright, with two sand dunes and a swamp up to a metre deep keeping the ocean from breaking through to the almost 4000 acres that would become Kawana.

The canals and lakes of Kawana were not so much a lifestyle choice as an effective way to drain the swamp. Sand was dredged to create the canals and to fill the land sites. There was a credit squeeze in the early 1960s, and the development, like the Alfred Grant development company, was floundering. Enter Noel Burns. A young accountant with Network Finance, which in the name of Hooker Finance had put up the funds for Alfred Grant, he set about resurrecting the development and formed a subsidiary group known as Kawana Estates Pty Ltd. Houses soon cropped up along Nicklin Way – one with arches, one with square windows, one an L-shape but every fifth one exactly the same. These days, it is more difficult to tell that there was a pattern to their construction, as gardens and renovations have wiped out the obvious repetition in design. And now it’s not just Kawana or Kawana Waters, but Buddina, and Birtinya and Bokarina and Warana and Wurtulla. Neither is it a problem if you get a flat tyre. You couldn’t be better placed.

On March 12, 1896, construction started on a timber-framed, metal-clad lighthouse in Caloundra, on land donated by Robert Bulcock. It was completed in August and guided vessels into the North West Shipping Channel to Moreton Bay and the port of Brisbane until 1968. There were also two shore lights on towers on Bribie Island. It was moved to Golden Beach in 1970 and then returned to its original site in 1999.

DID YOU KNOW? • Settlers from Dulong, Mapleton and Obi Obi built a road to Nambour in 1909 using ploughs, a horse-drawn scoop, pick and shovel, tip dray and wheelbarrow. Each man gave three weeks work. When first built, it was classed as a private road and the barriers at both ends were locked. Only the volunteers who had helped build it were given keys to the locks. The 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast will be celebrated on August 1, 2017. In the lead-up to the occasion, My Weekly Preview will each week take a look into our region’s past. If you have any historical photos or stories email editorial@myweeklypreview.com.au.

10/03/2017 2:58:44 PM HAVE YOUR SAY

FROM THE MAYOR

Our Sunshine Coast community is blessed with some extraordinary citizens. At last week’s council meeting, we honoured one of the most extraordinary of all – Emeritus Professor Alan Mackay-Sim, the 2017 Australian of the Year, and a proud resident of Currimundi. The key to the city was presented to Professor Mackay-Sim to recognise not only his Australian of the Year Award, but also what he has achieved throughout a distinguished career. His pioneering research has helped provide a positive future for thousands of people with spinal cord injuries – in Australia and overseas. Professor Mackay-Sim’s work also shows our young Sunshine Coast residents the endless opportunities that are available by pursuing a career in health and medical research. He is a strong advocate for research and is very impressed with what we now have available in our region thanks to the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital at Birtinya. We thank Professor Mackay-Sim for his service to our community and wish him all the best as he continues to give hope to thousands of Australians with spinal cord injuries.

TOWN SQUARE FOR PALMWOODS A new town square will soon create a green community space for people to gather and enjoy in the heart of the hinterland town of Palmwoods. Work has started to provide a central meeting point for festivals and community celebrations with seating, shade and outdoor dining opportunities. There will be improved pedestrian links through the town, connecting the three shopping precincts on Margaret, Main and Little Main streets. Streetscape works will be undertaken on Main and Hill streets with these areas connected by an all-access timber boardwalk in a grove of mature Piccabeen palms, named The Piccabeen Walk after the tree that Palmwoods takes its name from. Smart city infrastructure such as free Wi-Fi, controllable lighting and power for events, projectors and bin sensors will also be installed. Council worked with a Streetscape Reference Group to finalise the town square design with the project expected to be completed in December.

A PLAN FOR PARKING A draft framework to proactively manage car parking across the Sunshine Coast was unveiled this week and residents can now have their say on the plans. The comprehensive draft Parking Management Plan is an important part of our commitment to long-term planning for the Sunshine Coast. Feedback received during the community consultation period will inform the final Sunshine Coast Council Parking Management Plan, which will then be presented to council for consideration. Community feedback will close on May 5. “The smart parking plan applies common sense solutions and harnesses existing and new technology as a means to manage greater demand for car parking as our region continues to grow at a rate higher than other Queensland regions,” Mayor Mark Jamieson says. “In tackling congestion, there really are only two levers available – better, more extensive and integrated public transport solutions and how we manage car parking demand.

“The public transport solution rests with the State Government – while council has the authority to manage car parking demand. “The draft Parking Management Plan will help us proactively manage parking while recognising the existing and future demands of residents and visitors.” Visit haveyoursay.sunshinecoast .qld.gov.au for a copy of the draft Parking Management Plan, draft Local Area Parking Plans and to provide your comments online. You can also visit displays at: • Sunshine Coast libraries • Sunshine Coast Council Customer Service counters • A number of community information sessions to be held across the Sunshine Coast Alternatively, post your written comments to Sunshine Coast Council, Draft Sunshine Coast Parking Management Plan, Locked Bag 72, Sunshine Coast Mail Centre, Qld, 4560.

WHAT’S ON

WE’RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD

Playing the classic character of Dorothy in Gateway Production’s upcoming Wizard of Oz is a dream role for Kayleigh Marven. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

‘Wicked Witch’ Rosanna Natoli, ‘Dorothy’ Kayleigh Marven and the ‘Wizard’ Dale Gibson

K

ayleigh Marven has been singing since she was a toddler. The car, the house, the shower, nowhere was off limits. The Bribie Island State High School student has performed in school productions and choirs before starting musical theatre three years ago. Marven has taken on the role of Tinkerbell in Junior Squids and performed two shows as the Artful Dodger as the understudy for Squids’ production of Oliver, but when the 15-year-old received an email from Gateway Theatre Productions to announce she had won the role of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, Marven “literally screamed”. “I was so excited,” Marven tells My Weekly Preview. “I’ve always wanted to play Dorothy since I was a kid so it

was a dream come true. I remember watching the Wizard of Oz as a kid and loving Judy Garland as Dorothy. Knowing the story and knowing Somewhere Over Rainbow has helped a lot.” Marven says she loves everything about performing, from the lights and music to the “vibe” of joining an eclectic array of actors to deliver an amazing show. “It’s such a brilliant environment. Being someone else gives you a chance to forget yourself for a bit and not worry about anything,” she says. “The rehearsal process has been amazing. The children playing the Munchkins are so willing to learn and perform. “The cast are all so talented and just bring so much to the show. Everyone lights up the stage in their own way.”

The teenager admits she has experienced nerves at portraying such as well-known and loved classic character. “She’s such a fun role, and there are so many fun songs in the show, but I have to sing them as Kayleigh, not as Judy Garland,” she says. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow is the first song in the show and it’s the song everybody knows and remembers. I have to really nail that song. I’ve always sung it around the house, so to actually perform it as Dorothy is amazing.” Marven says her personal favourite part of the show is the Scarecrow scene. “I have so much fun with that scene and Liam [Wigney] and I connect really well on stage and off,” she says. “I think the audience will love Merry Old Land of Oz and The Jitterbug – two awesome dance numbers.” Marven joins some of the brightest musical theatre talent from South-East Queensland, including Paul Wheeler as the Cowardly Lion, Mike Lapot as Tinman, Dale Gibson as The Wizard and Channel 7 Sunshine Coast presenter Rosanna Natoli as you’ve never seen her before – in the role of the wicked witch. Gateway Theatre Productions is set to bring a new, bright and wonderful retelling of the 1939 classic film, that will keep you guessing with surprise twists and turns. The show is filled with theatrical special effects, amazing sets and costumes, a 20-piece orchestra and a cast of 80. There are only four shows available, so make sure you don’t miss out these school holidays. The Wizard of Oz is on at The Events Centre, Caloundra on April 8 and April 10 at 7pm, and April 9 and April 11 at 2.30pm. Tickets are $79.90 adult and $49.90 for a child aged two to 11. GRIPPING MURDER THRILLER AT THE THEATRE

CANADIAN FOLK BAND MAKE TRADITIONAL INTO HIP

PERSEVERANCE LEADS TO SUCCESS FOR COAST AUTHOR Award-winning Sunshine Coast writer Dr Eileen Herbert-Goodall has announced the release of her novella The Sherbrooke Brothers. The novella has been published by US company Moonshine Cove Publishing and features illustrations by Aaron Pearson. Having received her fair share of rejection letters, Herbert-Goodall says her recent success is a testament to the power of perseverance. “I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited or relieved in my life,” she says. Readers interested in contemporary literature with a dark twist will be sure to enjoy The Sherbrooke Brothers, which will be launched early next month. Dr Eileen Herbert-Goodall will launch The Sherbrooke Brothers at Rosetta Books in Maleny on April 1 at 4pm.

If you are looking for something a little dark and chilling, you must check out the Bats Theatre Company’s Night Must Fall. The gripping murder thriller, with delightfully dark characters written by Emlyn Williams and directed by David Wilson, is a classic psychological journey that tells the story of Dora Parkoe, who is a maid in the home of Mrs Bramson. The household is full of creepy characters and strange things have been happening, including a human hand found in a rubbish bin outside the house. Night Must Fall is on at the Buderim War Memorial Hall on March 31, April 1, 7, and 8 at 7.30pm and on April 2 and 8 at 2pm. Tickets are $25 adult and $23 concession and are available at batstheatre.com.

The East Pointers have toured tirelessly and consistently spanning Europe, the US, Canada and Australia since the release of their debut album, Secret Victory, in 2015. An adrenaline-fuelled, roof-rattling, performance monster, Secret Victory was penned mostly while touring in Australia. And even before releasing the album, The East Pointers knew they were onto something, having accepted the 2015 Music P.E.I. Award for New Artist of the Year, and Roots Traditional Recording of the Year awards. Ontario guitarist Jake Charron and seventh generation Prince Edward Island musicians Tim and Koady Chaisson have gone on to receive a swag of international awards. The East Pointers will be at the Sol Bar in Maroochydore on April 1 at 8pm. Tickets are $20 at the door.

THE WAIT FOR DARKC3LL IS OVER DARKC3LL are not a product of the mainstream, yet they are one of Australia’s fastest rising acts, and have been touted as a modern day KISS. Visually and musically, the band has proven themselves as a world-class outfit and with a fourth album on the way this four-piece shows no signs of slowing down. With the cancellation of the Monsoon RockStock festival, fans have had to patiently wait to see the guys live and raw. The wait is now over, with DARKC3LL set to perform at the Sol Bar supported by All Strings Attached, Gumby Foot and The Cumquats. DARKC3LL will be at the Sol Bar in Maroochydore on April 7 at 8pm. Tickets are $10 at the door.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN GUIDE

HAVE A BALL AT SUNCITY TENPIN BOWLING Tenpin bowling is a social way to have fun with the family, and the good news is it is great exercise. Better than a gym workout, tenpin bowling is a great cardio exercise, and includes weight lifting, stretching and walking – the average bowler walks a whole kilometre in a typical three-game series. When you bowl, your body and arms receive weight-based training, while the repeated bending, swinging, flexing and stretching will tone up your muscles. Gripping the ball will strengthen your hand. Bowling requires co-ordination, of feet and hands, as well as hand-eye co-ordination. These are skills that the growing child will require as they mature.

myweeklypreview.com.au

39.indd 1

Another advantage of tenpin bowling is that it can be played by a wide range of ages, and is a lifetime sport. There is a low risk of injury, which makes it a suitable, safe game for children. But it is in the social area that bowling really excels. Because of the nature of the game, there is ample opportunity for social interaction. While competing or waiting for their turn, children can chat to their team members and their opposition. It’s a fantastic way for children to make new friends. And because everyone gets a turn, all children feel included. Mari Street, Alexandra Headland Visit suncitytenpin.com.au.

SIX OF THE BEST The Sunshine Coast property market is healthier than it has ever been, so what is driving all the interest in our region’s housing? MWP looks at six factors that make the Coast so desirable to buyers, investors and renters. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

T

he auction clearance rates of properties going under the hammer on the Coast are rivalling the Sydney and Melbourne markets, the demand for properties is higher than ever and the days spent on market are the lowest they have been in years. So why is the region experiencing such ideal market conditions? According to Urban Developer, there are six factors that drive the country’s residential property markets: population growth, demographics, job creation, infrastructure, new residential supply, and lifestyle and amenity. Reading through the list, it is easy to see that the Coast ticks all of the boxes. Real Estate Industry Queensland CEO Antonia Mercorella says the economic fundamentals in the region are solid and support historical property price growth, which will continue throughout 2017. “The Sunshine Coast was the topperforming market in 2016. It is ideally located, on the coast and in close proximity to the third-largest capital city in Australia,” Mercorella says. “It has low unemployment, at just 4.7 per cent in January, which is below the Australian benchmark of 5.7 per cent in the same month, and there is a strong diversity in the buyer groups, with owner-occupiers, future retirees, local and interstate investors all contributing to increasing demand. “On top of that, the Sunshine Coast offers quality of life including modern

healthcare facilities, good-rate education system and increasing employment opportunities with population growth. “The rental market is the strongest throughout the state with vacancy rates well below the healthy range. This is definitely another key factor to drive demand on the sales market and keep pushing prices up.” So, let’s break down the six key areas identified by Urban Developer to showcase why our property market is so strong now.

“The Sunshine Coast residential property market growth is sustainable as it has been driven by a moderate increase in population of about 25 per cent from the 2005 to 2015 financial years and steady economic growth of 30.9 per cent in the same period. “This compares to the median housing and unit price growth of about 30.6 per cent and 14.1 per cent, respectively.”

POPULATION GROWTH

Everywhere you look on the Sunshine Coast, you will find major development projects underway. All of these will provide construction jobs and ongoing employment opportunities in fields as varied as tourism and hospitality, medicine, aviation, and business. The newly opened $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital has created an extra 12,000 new jobs and the training partnerships with the University of the Sunshine Coast and East Coast TAFE ensure young people who study in different medical fields will have an opportunity to remain in the region to begin their careers. The future Sunshine Coast Airport upgrade will create an estimated 5300 construction jobs and 2900 ongoing jobs. On the commercial front, SunCentral CEO John Knaggs says fostering economic growth is a key aim of the Maroochydore City Centre project, which will create more than 15,000 jobs and inject an estimated

With an estimated population of around 350,000, the Sunshine Coast takes out the title of fourth largest local government area in the country and renowned demographer Bernard Salt’s latest report The Activated City: Imagining the Sunshine Coast in 2040, predicts the region’s population will grow to 550,000 in the next 23 years. Greenfield sites at Aura and Palmview are already being transformed into property market magnets, creating housing for 50,000 and 12,000 people respectively. Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows in the 2015 financial year, the net interstate migration to Queensland was driven by residents from NSW, with 4862 people moving to the Coast. Mercorella says in the 2014 financial year, the Sunshine Coast accounted for 77 per cent of Queensland’s interstate migration, with 4474 (net) interstate migrants choosing to call the Sunshine

Coast home, compared with a total of 5753 interstate migrants moving to Queensland. “A similar trend was noted in the 2015 financial year when the net interstate migration to Queensland reached 6417 residents, with 4732 residents moving to the Sunny Coast, representing about 74 per cent of total migration in the state,” she says.

$4.4 billion into the local economy. Residential development sites like Aura and Palmview will also provide decades of work for thousands of tradespeople. AVID Property Group, which is developing stage one of Palmview (which is called Harmony), estimates more than 9000 jobs will be created by this estate alone. Mercorella says these projects strengthen the employment market, which is a key driver of housing demand.

NEW RESIDENTIAL SUPPLY

DEMOGRAPHICS Sunshine Coast Councillor Jenny McKay says multiculturalism is alive and well on the Sunshine Coast, with 20 per cent of the population being born overseas, representing 156 countries, 45 faiths and 96 languages in the region. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2014 figures, the average age of a Sunshine Coast resident is 42.8 years, 5.5 years older than the national average. Mercorella says the Coast has been one of Queensland’s best-kept secrets. “But those days are well behind us and it’s no surprise to anyone who knows this area why it is enormously popular with tourists and locals,” she says. “Its world-class beaches and eateries combine to create an enviable lifestyle opportunity.” Salt says the Coast will increasingly attract young tech-savvy entrepreneurs who are seeking out lifestyle locations to operate their businesses.

INFRASTRUCTURE There has been a wealth of both private and government investment in the region and projects will come to fruition for the next two decades and beyond. Infrastructure projects on the horizon include the Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade project, the Mooloolah River interchange connecting the Sunshine Motorway to the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the Bruce Highway

upgrade from Pine River to Caloundra. Access to the Sunshine Coast is also set to become a lot easier for tourists and businesspeople, with the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion earmarked for completion in 2020. The 2450-metre-long runway will be capable of supporting 1.9 million passengers a year by 2020. AVID Property Group Queensland general manager Bruce Harper says these projects, along with the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the Maroochydore

While capitals like Sydney and Melbourne are facing skyrocketing property prices, the release of land for several major residential developments across the Sunshine Coast will create more opportunities for home buyers and investors in the region. Harmony at Palmview will have 5000 homes constructed in the next decade and Aura will have 20,000 homes built over 30 years. Bokarina Beach, which is located close to the Kawana health precinct, will also open up hundreds of home sites from mid-2017, as well as a dedicated town centre, tourist accommodation and a network of walking and cycling paths. Mercorella says REIQ statistics show house listings fell by 11.4 per cent in the Sunshine Coast statistical division for the 12 months to November 2016, a sign that this is a vendor’s market. “However, based on the economic fundamentals of the region, the Sunshine Coast residential property market is healthy and we are optimistic that the additional stock coming to the market will ease the demand pressure. This will ensure longterm market sustainability,” she says. “Broadly speaking, an increase in supply – assuming stable demand – would ease the growth levels. Our projections for the Sunshine Coast residential property market are positive for the remainder of 2017.”

LIFESTYLE AND AMENITY Three Sunshine Coast beaches recently made it onto TripAdvisor’s Top 25 Australian Beaches list, the breath-taking views from the lush hinterland is a short drive away and despite its growing size, the Coast community still remains a close-knit one. The Coast was listed in another of Salt’s reports, Super Connected Lifestyle Locations, as a highly desired “lifestyle town” for people seeking the ideal work/life balance. “Ranging in size and location, the lifestyle town offers more affordable properties which often have scenic views or additional space to spare,” the report says. “These towns are also mostly found within a commutable distance of a capital city. The search of ‘lifestyle happiness’ was listed as the main reason (72 per cent) for Aussies making the move to these locations, with the cost of living also listed as a key factor for almost a third of those surveyed.”

Tamara Wrigley and Gail Kenny celebrate The staff at Carolans First National Real Estate Nambour were stars at the General Excellence and Marketing Awards, securing three awards at the prestigious event. The team secured a silver award for the Highest Residential Commissions, a gold award for Highest Residential listings and commissions and a platinum award for the Highest Residential Revenue. Individual team members were also recognised at the awards night, held at the Sofitel in Brisbane, for their achievements. Agency principal Peter Wrigley received the silver award for Highest Residential Commissions, Vanessa Brunton received the gold award for Highest Residential Commissions, Andy Sharma received the gold award for Highest Residential Listings and Gail Kenny received the platinum award for Highest Residential Revenue. Wrigley says the First National GEM Awards is an important event as it encourages agents to aspire to an ongoing process of performance improvement that benefits their customers. “Carolans First National Real Estate is focused on the things customers most value in real estate such as quality in communication and advice, marketing, value for money, problem resolution and contract handling,” he says. “When agents bring these things together effectively, our customers get the results they seek, as do our agents and property managers.”

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

OK, so my son informs me that every year, more people in the world die from falling coconuts than from shark attacks. Surely not? This is an outrage! I call for a cull of all coconuts trees. This is serious. I have heard the saying, “having a big set of coconuts”, but this is crazy. Now Margaret River is about to start and they are predicting some solid waves, so it should be interesting, especially if they surf The Box break. The Brazilians hate it and I would have to agree – if I had to drop over that ledge I would be crapping my pants too. If you remember Mr Wright scored a 10 there last year. Looks like we are in for some waves this weekend but alas, strong winds will be attached so points will be the go. Noosa should be fun with the other 500 or so surfers. Said no one ever. So beware of coconuts and have a great weekend.

ESTUARY: Whiting are taking yabbies on the drift over the sand banks at Bli Bli with mud crabs at the mouth of feeder creeks. Flathead and jew will be in the Cod Hole on live baits or sinking lures that rattle. Catch bream on the top of the tide under the high-rise buildings along Duporth and Bradman avenues, using fowl gut and peeled prawns. SURF: Sand whiting and small dart will be along Maroochy Beach using cured worms (they stay on better) with low tide best. Tailor are surprising anglers at Cotton Tree bag wall and Point Cartwright with quality and quantity, using pillies and chrome slugs. OFFSHORE: Spotted and Spanish mackerel are taking weighted pillies and red head lures just off Point Cartwright and Twelve Mile with tailor nabbing small lures trolled just past the breakers. Murphy’s Reef and Coolum will be returning mixed reef fish with dawn and dusk best, using cut baits. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam is returning bass on deep divers and saratoga on surface poppers or flies. Silver perch and jew are preferring earthworms when worked just along the weed line. Reports from Boondooma and Bjelke-Petersen aren’t encouraging, but a high barometer will improve fishing in these bigger impoundments as the levels rise.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21]

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21]

Expect some dizzying highs and dismal lows this week. Thursday is potentially the best day, as Mars trines Pluto, which increases your personal magnetism. But if you don’t use your power in positive ways, then it could all come crashing down.

A relationship may be strained this week as Saturn, Pluto and retrograde Venus regurgitate an unpleasant or unresolved issue from the past. The worst way to handle it? With a stubborn attitude and an unforgiving heart.

Avoid being too brisk and brusque with loved ones this week, as your business side goes into overdrive. Family and friends respect your multi-tasking skills, but they can also be overwhelmed by them. So pace yourself.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23]

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23]

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23]

The planets push your insecurity button this week, which will activate your protective crab claws. But you’ll find the more defensive you are [and the more resistant you are to change] the more exhausted you’ll feel and the more difficult the week will be.

Prepare for an exasperating week when Saturn and Pluto stymie your natural Leo ebullience. And your love life could take a hit too. So what’s the celestial message amidst all of this frustration? The planets are teaching you to be less stubborn.

If you’re searching for smart ways to make money, don’t over-capitalise or attempt to re-invent the wheel. Tried and tested methods will work best at the moment. And be extra careful what you say to a stressed loved one, especially on the weekend.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23]

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22]

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21]

Oh my goodness, what a wonky week for partnerships of the romantic and platonic kind! With Venus retrograde and squaring retro Saturn, relationships will not run smoothly. The weekend is the most sensitive time so try to communicate clearly.

Get ready for a week of extremes. Thursday should be a terrific day as Pluto trines Mars, which boosts your energy, enthusiasm, motivation and mojo. But frustration levels then rise, culminating in a weekend when you could end up in a power struggle.

Sagittarians prefer life to be fun and games, with minimum effort involved. And sometimes your fiery spontaneity and versatile virtuosity are all that’s required. But not this week. Saturn stirs up your home zone as a family member causes problems.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20]

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19]

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20]

This week Saturn [your power planet] goes retrograde, and then squares retro Venus. Which equals double trouble in the love department. So prepare for plenty of relationship hassles or old issues from the past to return.

Many people will feel particularly over-sensitive and over-reactive this week. So it would be best to keep idiosyncratic ideas and controversial comments to yourself. And avoid getting drawn into petty arguments and pointless debates.

Venus is now reversing through your sign until mid-April, so you’ll find that a personal project or a close relationship may suddenly stall! Don’t waste too much time worrying about it, or expend too much energy trying to fix it.

THE LAST WORD

STAR BRIGHT Richard O’Leary is feeling small, but that’s just how he likes it.

I

n 1990 as the Voyager probe approached the edge of our solar system it captured an image of Earth. From that distance our planet is just a pale blue dot in a milky sea of space. If you were able to pull back further from that image, that blip, which is us, would disappear altogether. So where does that leave us as individuals when our appearances in this cosmic play are measured in decades, while the backdrop is timed in the billions of years? It may seem counter-intuitive, but it’s the very smallness of our existence which provides me with the greatest comfort. When I was a child I would lie at night on the grass in our backyard and stare up at the stars until I would lose my sense of self and feel like I was about to be sucked up into it space, freed of gravity and other

earthly restrictions and safeguards. It terrified me so much I would white-knuckle grip the grass so I didn’t drift off. But now I feel more at ease about not being the centre of the universe. Not even a blue drop in an unfathomable ocean on a small blue dot. It releases the pressure. Seventy-two years before the Earth photobombed that image taken by the

“It’s the very smallness of our existence which provides me with the greatest comfort” Voyager probe, British philosopher Bertrand Russell in his essay Dreams and Facts put it all in perspective. “In the visible world, the Milky Way is a tiny fragment; within this fragment, the

solar system is an infinitesimal speck, and of this speck our planet is a microscopic dot. On this dot, tiny lumps of impure carbon and water, of complicated structure, with somewhat unusual physical and chemical properties, crawl about for a few years, until they are dissolved again into the elements of which they are compounded.” Russell said if you realised this, understood your place, and respected the privilege you had been given to play your part, albeit small, in this inconceivably complex conundrum, you would be relieved of fear. Or to put a way which would become popular pop mantra a few years after his death – don’t sweat the small stuff. When you think about life like that it does make it just that little bit easier. And if you’re really lucky you may even ponder for a minute or two why we take ourselves so seriously. olearylastword@gmail.com
