OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts ts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in degradable plastic.

We’re now open

hen I was growing up I would have 10 Weet-Bix for breakfast, a peanut butter and honey sandwich on white bread for lunch, half a packet of biscuits when I arrived home from school and meat and three veg for dinner. I can’t imagine my children consuming that sort of diet, but did my parents’ generation get it so wrong, or are we all just too fussy these days? For our cover story this week Candice Holznagel ventures into the kitchen to discover the latest food fads – and she uncovers the superfoods of the future. Also this week, we have a quick chat with a Patch Adams clown and meet Caloundra tandem surfers Fred and Lily Branger, who took their gymnastic feats to the next level while filming a TV commercial in Bali. We also take you on a street tour of Florence, see the incredible photo by a local photographer that won the Sunshine Coast Art Prize and catch up on the latest fashion, health and property news. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

WRITTEN IN THE STARS

Inspirational author, singer and Patch Adams clown Barbara Brewster is a presenter at the Sunshine Coast International Readers & Writers Festival. WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

Buderim.

November, 1967. The Himalaya docked in Sydney. I was 22. Since a kid of 10 years old, I’d dreamed of Australia, read every book in our California library, knew the songs, history, poems. I ran with open arms across the Harbour Bridge, never imagining what wondrous people, places, adventures awaited me, or that I’d write a book, Down Under All Over.

FIRST JOB? Picking blueberries. I quit after one day.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? Preparing for the upcoming Sunshine Coast International Readers & Writers Festival. Due to some major challenges, I’ve been ‘off stage’ in recent years. Now it’s exciting to be back in the world as a wiser, clearer me doing what I love – sowing seeds of awareness through my books, public speaking, creativity workshops such as Rambunctious Writing and performing my parody songs, solo, or with my troupe Joy Machine (also performing at SCIRWF).

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

IMAGE: TRACY NAUGHTON

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES… No one local, since Pudding (cat) died. I am the ‘arjay’ (wise elder woman) to a sweet, darling refugee family from Afghanistan, who live in Brisbane.

DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? On a shamanic journey I received the name Starshine. Some friends call me Star. Also Lady Frootloop from clowning with Patch Adams.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

FIRST CAR?

Say YES to WHATEVER the present moment is offering you. Resisting what is, is insane.

Little baby 1965 Datson. It would have made a great clown car.

Since 2000, with four years off.

Aside from mine? Everything by Dave Barry, ‘the funniest man in America’. I’ve read all 20-plus books several times. I used to read some spiritual light like Jesus or Buddha in bed. But then I started going to bed with Dave Barry, chuckling and smiling myself to sleep.

Climate. Beauty. Landscape. Some very creative, aware people.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?

FAVOURITE SONG? Many in every genre. Could be a toss-up, though, between John Williamson’s Galleries of Pink Galahs and Eric Bogle’s Always Back to You. I feel they each wrote those songs for me.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET? All the times I’ve stepped out of my truth to ‘be nice’ – i.e. gain approval.

PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT? Sowing seeds of awareness. Opening people – from all ages and walks of life – to remember and reconnect with their incredible true selves. This could occur via my workshops, singing, books, appearances, hosting BLT (Budding Local Talent) gatherings, or simply sitting with a taxi driver on a kerb in Soweto. Also, seeing groups I’ve inspired, like Buddies for Refugees and the Coastal Caring Clowns, thriving year after year. And, disentangling a seagull from a fishing line, one day at the river.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE?

FAVOURITE BOOK?

The Untethered Soul by Michael A Singer. Actually, I do take him to bed too.

I was 38. The neurologist said he was 90 per cent sure I had multiple sclerosis. That began my healing journey. Six years of looking excruciatingly honestly at my role in attracting this and other challenges, being willing to notice and risk changing limiting beliefs, negativities, self-identities, fearful behaviours; discovering that I am incredibly perseverant and willing to do whatever it takes, even – can you imagine – learning to love myself. My journalling became my first book, Journey to Wholeness, which opened doors to being a public person, teacher and sort-of mentor.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? FAVOURITE PLACE? The Spit. The water is usually calm enough to swim laps. Also a secret forest.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS?

ADVICE TO YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF?

Noosaville Farmers Market, the ranges, beaches, Buderim Forest Park and Elixiba Restaurant.

Don’t sacrifice your unique, wondrous self on the Altar of Approval.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

TEA OR COFFEE? Bengal Spice herbal tea. Or, three to four times a year, spoonmelting Turkish coffee, straight.

Stop disappearing our sky and open spaces.

Artist in Residence Program Sekisui House and Fish Lane Studios work together to bring international artists to the Sunshine Coast. Sekisui House is supporting new media design group Fish Lane Studios Limited at Coolum, continuing the Artist in Residence program. In June we hosted internationally acclaimed Japanese artist and teacher Yuko Nagayama. The successful week-long event of workshops attracted participants from across Australia and overseas. Project co-ordinator Wyn Vogel from Fish Lane Studios is very excited to have the next Artist in Residence, French water colourist Muriel Buthier-Chartrain, paint and demonstrate at the Sekisui Design Centre at 1443 David Low Way Yaroomba until Sunday 11 September. “Visitors and workshop participants were blown away by the quality of Yuko’s work in June and I can guarantee that Muriel’s art and her workshop will be just as enchanting. Muriel’s amazing skills with broad water colour brushes enables her to capture the nuances of light and float her water and sediments across the paper in a unique style that she has perfected for many years. “The two day artist workshop this Saturday and Sunday (10th & 11th September) is sold out and it’s great to see that the majority of these participants are local Sunshine Coast artists keen to soak up Muriel’s knowledge. We do encourage the community to visit and view Muriel’s works on

display in the centre,” Wyn said. Senior development Manager for Sekisui House, Evan Aldridge, is delighted that the inaugural Artist In Residence program is proving a resounding success and the community’s enthusiasm is a platform for more arts and cultural events. “Sekisui House is certainly keen to support this program over the long term. We believe there’s a whole spectrum of new opportunities for the wider Sunshine Coast arts community as a result of initiatives like the Artist in Residence program. “We are thrilled to be able to support and seed this program and hope it will ultimately enable more local artists to show their work at the Sunshine Coast and share in growing a ‘Clean Industry’ that which showcases the beauty of our region to the world,” Mr Aldridge said. Wyn said the purpose of the Sunshine Coast Artist in Residence program was to provide opportunities for students and professional artists from all genres to collaborate with the international arts community. “The Sunshine Coast has a thriving arts and cultural community and their opportunities are limitless in a World which craves new and innovative thinking and design. Our program aims to inspire and expand the horizons of current and

future generations of artists. “We are so thankful that we have such a supportive business community including Sekisui House Australia, Australian Knowledge Management Group, Arts Queensland and the Sunshine Coast Council who have collaborated to create this exchange of talent and skills,” Wyn said.

The Sunshine Coast Artist in Residence event with French water colourist Muriel Buthier-Chartrain is included in the Sunshine Coast Horizon Festival program which is being held across the Sunshine Coast until 11 September.

COVER STORY

A TASTE FOR CHANGE Our eating habits have changed a lot in the last 30 years – so what will we be eating in the future? WORDS: Candice Holznagel

A growing number of allergies and intolerances have driven an entire generation of consumers to question what they are eating and how their food is prepared

“I

s this fruit organic?’’ It’s the question posed by my two-year-old son during breakfast this morning. His curiosity pleasantly surprised me and yet, raises the question: when did society’s changing diet habits creep into the vocabulary of our young? Is this a result of a food evolution, or a revolution; one aimed at improving our health and combatting the growing list of diseases wreaking havoc on society? Is today’s way of eating simply fadbased or a sign of better things to come? Rewind 30 years and that was me sitting at that table, dining on what my mother believed was a healthy breakfast of white bread laced with sugar and dried fruit. Cornflakes, Coco Pops, Weet-Bix, white bread, fruit toast and the traditional sugar bowl – the breakfast staples of any 1980s household. The only sugar my son has at breakfast comes in the form of a fresh apple. Like with every other aspect of modern life, our kitchen tables have changed. More money and research into the links between health and food intake – $5.9 billion is spent on health and medical research in Australia each year – and a growing number of allergies and intolerances have driven an entire generation of consumers to question what they are eating, and how their food is prepared.

12 My Weekly Preview | September 9, 2016

12.indd 1

Foreign influences have also had an impact and we have seen the emergence of super grains, fermented foods and the Paleo diet. Australian Geographic reports that annual sushi sales have reached 116 million serves, bringing a healthy alternative to the traditional meat pie (177 million serves). Today’s food trends lean towards eating fresh, organic food with a move away from genetically-modified food, otherwise

recommended daily serves of fruit (two or more serves), while only seven per cent met the guidelines for serves of vegetables. Only 5.1 per cent of adults met both guidelines. These rates have increased slightly from 2011–12. Experts say it is a flow-on effect from a generation gone by – one that saw the introduction of strategic marketing, microwaves and convenience. After more than 30 years of study into food and health, leading Sunshine Coast

known as GMOs. Popular cooking techniques have taken a step back in time to steaming, smoking and making bone broths from scratch. Yet, statistics indicate the majority of consumers have a long way to go. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ National Health Survey 2014–15, 49.8 per cent of Australians aged 18 years and over met the guidelines for

nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara concludes there is an entire generation of people who don’t know how to cook. “The housewife got seduced out of the kitchen with shelf-stables becoming available. They didn’t have to cook, these 1960s, ‘70s, ‘80s women. All they’ve ever done is get takeaway or go buy a chicken and buy a salad, buy a Lean Cuisine. She has been seduced out of the kitchen with

the belief she was doing the right thing.’’ There has been a slow but definite change in pattern with more people now exploring their food and cooking options. Demi Paterson of Sunshine Coast business Patersons Cooking School says people are showing a renewed interest in the kitchen. “The fantastic thing about the cooking school is that we have people from all walks of life and situations. From people that love to cook and want to learn new skills and different styles of food to people who cannot cook at all that do a whole back to basics class,’’ she says. “It is so much easier to eat healthy when you are cooking your own meals, so we show people how to eat economically with emphasis on nutrition. Retirees love our classes for that reason alone.” O’Meara says people are increasingly becoming more open to changing kitchen habits. “If I was talking about the people that are not even caring about their diet, they haven’t changed at all,’’ she tells My Weekly Preview. “They are still eating their pastas, breads, breakfast cereals. There are lot of people not interested… they are happy eating the same old foods. “Then there is another group that is either looking for an answer or then those who have an answer and figured it out. These people realise shelf-stable foods do myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY not bring us health. “The second group is growing. My belief is once upon a time it may have been around two per cent (of the population) but it has grown to 12 per cent. “But look at the health food industry, it’s growing at a huge extent. We are going away from traditional foods like breakfast cereals and going back to old-fashioned foods. “Food is changing because we have sick children and mothers are seeking the change. That’s the driver – those parents.’’ Interestingly, Australian Geographic reports that our nation’s top 10 iconic foods include pavlova, lamingtons, meat pies, Chiko Rolls and neenish tarts. It’s a stark comparison to the foods O’Meara says should be at the top of our list. “I’m hoping, and I may be wrong, that we see a resurgence in Australian foods. There is a book, The Oldest Foods on Earth, about the Australian bushfoods. In south-east Queensland there are 2000 fruits that are not English, not European, they are native Australian. “Native oat, native millet, native grains and our land is for these foods. We don’t need more water, we don’t need more chemicals. “I don’t know how soon this will happen. We are already seeing lemon myrtle, Kakadu plums… we are seeing a resurgence. It’s minor at the moment but I really believe if we are going to change from what we are doing now to something different, to what might be a new trend… look for ancient heritage foods. “Think about the chia seed, nobody knew about the chia seed 10 years ago. “We need to realise we do have a landscape of foods that grow naturally and we need to start nurturing that. I believe in the next decade we will see more Australian foods.’’ Tam Schulte owns Maroochydore’s Nebo Organics. She and husband Wolfgang opened the store almost two years ago in a bid to answer the Sunshine Coast’s call for more organic, raw food specialists. While superfoods have been a popular trend,

Tam and Tam and Wolfgang – owners of Nebo Organics Schulte agrees that locally grown foods are the answer to improved health. “A lot of people go crazy (for superfoods) but they are called superfoods for a reason. Some of the superfoods don’t agree with us. What is right for South Americans isn’t necessarily going to be right for us. “There is a trend in eating local, it’s better for the environment and eating local food that is seasonal.’’ Schulte says while fads come and go, eating healthy is here to stay. The fermented method has a strong following that continues to grow, while organic produce and avoiding overstimulation from chemicals are two core trends consumers are committing to. “We are getting to the point that they (food trends) have to last,’’ Schulte says. “The older generation – my parents’ generation – was all about the fast food. That is when it became a thing. My mum thought nothing of throwing something in the microwave. Now that generation has a lot of diabetes and diseases. “I think the younger generation has to change things and people are realising that. Now people are realising you can eat healthy and it tastes good.’’

IN NUMBERS In 1995, more than 90% of Australians aged two years and over consumed cereal products.

81% of those people were more likely to eat bread than any other cereal product.

80% of Australians consumed meat, poultry and game compared to only 17% who consumed fish and seafood products in 1995. In 2011–12, Australians aged two and over, consumed around 3.1 kilograms of foods and beverages per day. In 2014–15, 49.8% of Australians aged 18 years and over met the guidelines for recommended daily serves of fruit while 7% met the guidelines for serves of vegetables. In 2011–12, 3.7 million Australians reported avoiding a food type due to allergy or intolerance.

1.6 million people avoided particular foods for cultural, religious or ethical reasons. Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics

FOOD TRENDS According to the American Museum of Natural History, the way we eat will continue to evolve. With nine billion people calling Earth their home by 2050, we have little choice. As our climate changes, so will the ways we grow our food. The museum reports that 40 per cent of all cropland worldwide is experiencing soil erosion, reduced fertility, or overgrazing. Australia’s highest selling supermarket product, the banana, could be extinct within a decade due to a threat from Sigatoka complex, made up of three fungal diseases. With reports like this, you have to wonder, how will we adapt? How will food production meet the growing demand and how will our diets change? Technology, research and climate change will all impact the future of food and it is difficult to predict what food will be fashionable. For now, let’s take a look at some of the newest food trends taking over: FERMENTATION – this is the key to good gut health according to experts. From kombucha to apple cider vinegar, there are a number of nutritional ways to improve tummy issues. Korea’s kimchi is another dish growing in popularity. This spicy, fermented salad has a 3000-year history. It is a signature Korean food, so much so, the country even has a museum dedicated to kimchi. SUPER GRAINS– From buckwheat to quinoa and chia, super grains came into Australia’s focus a few years ago and are becoming a staple part of our diet as they are rich in antioxidants and vitamins. THE CHINA STUDY – The book by Professor T. Colin Campbell has sold more than one million copies and explores the link between eating animal products and illnesses such as heart disease and cancer. It is claimed that people who eat a raw-food, plant-based diet void of processed foods, will live healthier and longer lives.

REVIEW PEARLER OF A DAY

One of the greatest collections of works by grand master artists of South America has been found in storage on a Sunshine Coast hinterland farm. Known as the Buenos Aires Collection, it features 22 artists, 43 works and cultural value that is priceless. Masterpieces by these great painters are hanging in national galleries, museums and prized collections worldwide. Queensland arts advisor and co-ordinator Suellyne Lott and business colleague Brandt Teale received a call from a businessman wondering if the paintings he’d been storing for a decade in a spare room had value. “What I found was amazing,” says Lott. “It is a truly impressive collection spanning more than a century of Argentina’s often turbulent political and social history, with the works reflecting the hopes, dreams and fears of their times.” The collection is on exhibition at Main Street Gallery in Montville until October 4.

The outstanding competitors in the 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship were honoured on Monday, September 5 at the Banquet of Champions as the culmination to one of the most successful international sporting events to be held on the Sunshine Coast. A crowd estimated at around 25,000 lined the course in glorious early spring weather on Sunday to see nearly 3000 competitors from 80-plus nations chase individual glory. Councillor Jason O’Pray said the race had enhanced the region’s already strong reputation for hosting world-class sporting events. The race generated an estimated economic contribution of $15 million for our local economy.

CYBER SAFETY A PRIORITY AT MORCOMBE LAUNCH The Daniel Morcombe Foundation launched new child safety resources on Tuesday, September 6 at Maroochy Surf Club. His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland launched Respectful Relationships for Prep to Year 12 Students and Cyber Safety for Parents/Carers/Guardians. Denise Morcombe said, “For many years we have been asked by parents and carers: What are my children doing online, what are they exposed to and how can I keep them safe? The Cyber Safety video is about highlighting the online and digital dangers with solutions and tools to make our children safe.” The resources are free for schools and community groups.

The Sunshine Coast’s biggest local road upgrade has taken shape, with new lanes now open on sections of Maroochydore’s Evans Street. New lanes are open to traffic at the intersections of Plaza Parade/Evans Street and Maroochydore Road/Evans Street. Division 8 councillor Jason O’Pray, who inspected construction progress today, said there had been a noticeable improvement in traffic flow. “Opening new lanes between Plaza Parade and Millwell Road has already helped traffic flow through the existing signalised intersection and it should only getter better from now until construction is complete,” O’Pray said.

SHOCK ART DISCOVERY IN LOCAL FARMHOUSE

A vibrant and diverse crowd turned out for Nambour’s Colour The Street event as part of the Horizon festival on Saturday, September 3. The animated block party brought Howard Street to life with 3D pavement art, laser light shows, a kids’ circus and chalk drawing area, street performers, spoken word performances and fantastic live music from The Outsiders, Andrea Kirwan and many more. The tram tracks were lit up with electric blue lights and a lantern parade with a paper lantern tram in the lead reminded the crowd of Nambour’s heritage. The event had a welcoming community feel, with kids, parents and grandparents partying on together into the night.

Cyclists must obey the road rules. Those who break the law are now subject to the same penalties as motorists.

Motorists must now give a minimum of 1m when passing a cyclist in a 60km/h or less speed zone, and 1.5m where the speed limit is over 60km/h

In order to pass a cyclist – as long as it is safe to do so – motorists can: • drive over centre lines on a two way road. • straddle or cross a lane line on a multi-lane road. • drive on a painted island.

Cyclists must not ride more than two abreast.

Cyclists can now take the lane in a single lane roundabout.

It’s optional to ride in a bicycle lane.

Cyclists can ride across zebra crossings, as long as it is safe to do so. •

Motorists should treat cyclists like any other road user. Give way to them when required and travel at a safe distance.

Safer cycling apparel Council has developed customised cycling apparel, which improves safety by making cyclists more visible on the road. The apparel also shares important road safety messages for both drivers and cyclists. This high quality cycling apparel is now available for purchase. Visit council’s website and search for ‘safer cycling’.

TANDEM SURFERS’ BIG BREAK Filming a TV commercial dressed as a surfing cow and banana is all in a day’s work for this Kings Beach couple. Words: Leigh Robshaw

hampion tandem surfers Fred and Lily Branger are at the top of their field and have won competitions around the world, but nothing they’ve done in their nine years of working together compares to a TV commercial they filmed in Bali recently. When Indonesian company Indomilk hired the Caloundra couple to star in an advertisement for its new banana flavoured milk, they underestimated how difficult it would be. In the ad, Fred is dressed as a surfing banana and holds Lily, dressed as a cow in a black tutu, high in the air as they surf the waves of Canggu. “It was the most difficult thing we’ve done,” says Fred. “It was like nothing like I’d experienced before. We usually go out when the conditions are ideal. We do exhibitions at the Noosa Festival of Surfing, where the waves are good. Surfing is very hard to predict because the weather conditions change all the time. There was a bit of anxiety leading up to the date because it was not flexible. We had to pick a place that would work in worst case scenario, that would be okay on small day and manageable on a big day.” The production team left it to the Brangers to choose the spot and they spent two days with a film crew of 30 making the quirky ad that would be seen by millions of viewers across Indonesia. “Lily couldn’t see anything and I couldn’t turn my head,” Fred says. “But we loved the humour in the commercial – it was a funny little script.” “Because of the mask I couldn’t see,” says Lily. “I just had a couple of little holes which were on my chin so I could just breathe. The mask was filling up with water when I was falling and I couldn’t see the waves coming – I could just hear the big waves. When you are blind you are aware of everything else – the sound, the rhythm of the wave.” “There was an ambulance parked on the beach. When I saw the ambulance on the second day when the waves were getting bigger, I thought, that’s not good,” she laughs. “Also, we normally ride an eleven-foot board and this one was ten feet,” says Fred. “It was a paddleboard, not a proper tandem board. It was floating a lot and bouncing along. It was too buoyant.” “Another challenge was a bit more psychological,” says Lily. “Before we arrived, my major concern was not about surfing, it was being sure the babysitter would be good with the kids. I found a babysitter online – I had to find someone who was very good because we needed to really focus on the job.” Their children Lochie, five and Elliot, 18 months old, are

used to being with babysitters when their parents are off gallivanting around the waves like surfing gymnasts, or teaching others the art of tandem surfing through their company, Nalu Association Australia. “Lochie has grown up with it,” says Fred. “He does a lot of tandem surfing with us – he stands on my shoulders. He’s getting to be a good little athlete himself, but we’re not pushing him in any way. “We do tandem surfing because we like sharing our love for the ocean, not just with Lily and I, but with others. Over the years I’ve taken people with no legs on the board, or a blind person, or autistic kids. It’s a way for people to enjoy the ocean. “We just love producing beautiful images. If we see a photo of a ballerina doing a lift, we think it would be amazing to get it

from this angle on a wave. We work towards that goal. We like meeting creative and talented people and we like hanging out with gymnasts, acrobats, ice skaters, cheerleaders and dancers. We also like to teach – we’ve been doing free workshops for as long as we’ve been tandem surfing.” Lily is as artistic as she is athletic. She has a background in art and graphic design and is currently working as a draughtsperson for a building design company in Caloundra. Fred is a senior high school teacher at Montessori International College. Originally from France, they met over a mutual interest in tandem surfing and hit it off. Searching for warmer weather and waves and a place to raise a family, they migrated to Australia in 2008 and surfed their way up the east coast of Australia, before settling at Kings Beach. They’re known as one of the best tandem surfing teams in the world, but they rarely compete, as there are only a few couples around the world – in France, Hawaii, California and Australia – that they can compete with. “It’s a bit too complicated to get together and we’re not big fans of the competitions,” Fred says. Instead, they prefer to run workshops around the Sunshine Coast for anyone who wants to learn the art of tandem surfing and you can always catch them at the Noosa Festival of Surfing.

LOCAL NEWS

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER WINS SUNSHINE COAST ART PRIZE 2016

A

thought-provoking photograph that explores a sense of loss has won the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2016. From 625 entries, Sunshine Coast-based photographer Michael Cook was announced as the winner for his work Mother – Tennis at a special event held at Caloundra Regional Gallery on September 1. More than 200 dignitaries, artists and guests joined arts portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski and judge Jane Deeth for the official opening of the Art Prize exhibition and winner announcement. Melbourne-based artist Cyrus Tang was announced as the Highly Commended winner for her photographic work entitled 7403.00s. “With a prize pool of more than $35,000, the Art Prize is now one of the richest regional art awards in Australia,” Baberowski said. “There is no doubt that the high level of creative talent made the task of selecting a winner particularly difficult for this year’s judge, esteemed arts writer, curator and educator Jane Deeth. “The winning artwork will now become a part of the Sunshine Coast Art Collection, ensuring it can be enjoyed by our community for years to come.” Judge Jane Deeth described Michael

Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2016 Winner was Michael Cook with Mother – Tennis, 2016, digital photograph inkjet on photo rag, 80 x 120 cm Cook’s work as a beautifully realised work. “The work invites us to examine every detail very closely, revealing layers of profound loss and longing that can be read in many ways from the most personal to the most political, and connecting to memories and histories that continue to haunt the present,” Deeth said. Cook’s work is part of his most recent series entitled Mother, a journey through 13 images of a woman in a deserted Australian

landscape. The mother is always alone, her baby absent, although evidence remains of there having been a child: the empty pram, the abandoned toys on the hopscotch court, the slackness of the skipping rope. These images possess an arrested stillness that implies a recently bereft status. While these images speak directly and poetically to Australia’s Stolen Generation, they speak also to a universal experience of disconnection between mother and child.

Michael Cook receives a $25,000 cash prize sponsored by Audi Centre Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Council as well as an artist residency thanks to Montville Country Cabins. In awarding the Highly Commended Award, judge Jane Deeth described Cyrus Tang’s work as delicately alluring. “This piece enacts events that are befalling our contemporary world – flood, tsunami and the destruction of war,” she said. Cyrus will receive a $5000 cash prize award sponsored by local philanthropists, the Proost-De Deyne family. Art lovers can vote for their favourite artwork in the exhibition by visiting Caloundra Regional Gallery and voting online via the council’s gallery website. A voucher from the gallery gift shop is up for grabs. The artist who receives the most public votes will win the People’s Choice Award and receive a cash prize of $2500, sponsored by the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce. The 40 finalists’ artworks will be on display at Caloundra Regional Gallery until October 2.

Room With a View. And those had to be THE steps where the brooding George Emerson carried Lucy’s fainting form. Sunshine filtered through. I had found Florence. Or rather, it had found me. If you’re planning a trip here, you could do worse than wander until you find what you didn’t know you were looking for. Here are a few starting points.

WHAT’S NEW

he skies were clouding over as I strode briskly across that famous bridge, the Ponte Vecchio, ready for a productive day checking off Florentine must-sees. Slight problem: The first museum on my list was open, but the ticket office

was closed. Okay then, on to the Uffizi Gallery. Except this time both ticket office and museum were closed; I had forgotten it was Monday. A fine rain began to fall as I wandered listlessly past the open arches of the building

next door, the statue-studded Loggia dei Lanzi. This wasn’t going at all as planned. And then it hit me. Wait. This was the Piazza della Signoria, where novelist EM Forster’s adorable Lucy Honeychurch witnessed a stabbing moments after complaining about the dullness of life in A

The Opera Duomo Museum, devoted to art created for the famous Florence duomo (cathedral), has been given a major makeover and expansion. A highlight is the exhibition hall featuring a replica of the former facade of the cathedral. A 15-euro pass (about $22.74) will get you access to the museum as well as the cathedral dome and bell tower, both with steps to the top. Open daily except the first Tuesday of the month, but check website for unexpected closures. Piazza del Duomo 9, museumflorence.com/museum. The Central Market (Piazza del Mercato Centrale on Via dell’Ariento) has a bright and bustling remodelled second floor, home to food stands, a restaurant, pizzeria, wine academy, cooking school and more. A gelato a day keeps the doctor away Michelangelo’s David. Yes, there are lines, crowds and a forest of smartphones waving in front of you, but all that falls away as you round the corner to the long gallery and confront five metres of cool, concentrated, confident youth. Galleria del’Accademia, Via Ricasoli 58/60. Open Tuesday–Sunday, 8.15am–6.50pm, about $18.73. The Uffizi Gallery, set in an imposing 16th-century building, is home to outstanding art, including Giotto’s altarpiece, the Ognissanti Madonna, which revolutionised painting by portraying the human figure in perspective, not just two dimensions. Piazzale degli Uffizi 6. Tuesday– Sunday, 8.15am–6.50pm, around $13. You can’t miss the Duomo, the Gothic cathedral encrusted in pink, green and white marble that is a striking feature of the city. The inside is less impressive but is open

most days 10am–5pm and is free. The Ponte Vecchio isn’t the most beautiful bridge in the world, but it is interesting, with its lineup of stores, mostly jewellers and souvenir sellers. It was big news in May when a sinkhole opened up, swallowing a score of cars on a stretch of road between Ponte Vecchio and the bridge immediately east, Ponte Grazie. The mayor of Florence vows the repairs will be completed by November. Around sunset, head to the Piazzale Michelangelo, on a hill on the south side of the Arno, for terrific views of the city. You can get here by taxi, the No.12 bus or by walking about 20 minutes from the Uffizi Gallery.

you can rent apartments by the week or have lunch on the property’s wide terrace perched above rolling vineyards. romitoriodiserelle.it/

TIPS • If you’re planning on visiting museums, consider buying tickets online; book entrance times to skip long lines. • More into shopping than sculpture? Check out the Santa Maria Novella, an apothecary that traces its history back 600 years. Don’t miss the displays of antique remedies such as anti-hysteria

pills as well as the beautifully packaged perfumes and other products available for modern consumers. Via della Scala 16. • For a touch of local night life, the Piazza Santo Spirito on the south side of the Arno is lined with cafes and bars. • A hot spot for gelato is La Carraia, Piazza Nazario Sauro 25R. Work up a literary appetite and order something in honour of Miss Honeychurch, who “loved iced coffee and meringues”. Enjoy your treats on the nearby Ponte alla Carraia where you’ll have more room, and, naturally, a view.

GETTING AROUND Florence is a walking city; bring comfy shoes. If you have a car or hire a driver, consider emulating Miss Honeychurch and cousin Charlotte and head for the hills. You’re in the middle of Chianti wine country with several estates to visit, including Poggio Casciano, a 14th-century villa that is part of the Ruffino wine company and about a 30-minute drive from the city. The estate produces Modus, a ‘super Tuscan’ red blend of sangiovese, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. By appointment only; reserve tastings and tours, ruffino.com. Farther afield is the Romitorio di Serelle, about 38 kilometres from Florence, where

WANTED: OUTER SPACE TOUR GUIDES Human body design and being an outer space tour guide are among the new jobs that will open up over the next 10 years. Virtual reality design, robotic engineering and visual communications are also listed as among the jobs of the future in a report by Microsoft and The Future Laboratory. It also found that only one-third of current university students believe their chosen career will exist in a decade. “Technological change, economic turbulence and societal transformation are disrupting old career certainties, making it increasingly difficult to judge which degrees and qualifications will remain a passport to a well-paid and fulfilling job in the decades ahead,” The Future Laboratory’s Steve Tooze says. “In the next decade, a technological revolution, essentially a second industrial revolution, will open up… exciting new career opportunities in sectors of the economy that are only in their infancy today.” AAP

How to get Bec Judd’s beachy waves Australian TV presenter and model Rebecca Judd recently shared a video explaining exactly how she achieves her signature loose, beachy waves. Check out the video at rebeccajuddloves.com. The three keys are: 1. Spray your roots with Klorane dry shampoo to hold the curl; 2. Use a curling tong and twist the hair back away from your face; and 3. Don’t curl the hair too close to the root, start at around cheekbone level, otherwise it will look too curly. MY LIFE

BREAST IS BEST FOR BABIES AT ASTHMA RISK Infants at high risk of developing asthma could be protected against respiratory symptoms early in life if they’re breastfed, according to a new study. Researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland have shown, for the first time, how breastfeeding interacts with a child’s asthma-related genetic profile – adding further weight to conclusive evidence that ‘breast is best’. The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby’s life, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond.

A study of more than 350 babies born at The University Children’s Hospital Basel (UKBB) found that those who carried the genes related to asthma risk, had a 27 per cent decreased chance of developing respiratory symptoms after being breastfeed for the first few weeks of their life. Genes that are associated with asthma risk are located on chromosome 17 and called 17q21. A recent study reported that children who possessed genetic variants on chromosome 17q21 had an increased risk of developing wheeze, when combined with certain environmental exposures. It is already known that environmental factors have a modifying effect on specific genetic risk, so the aim of this study was to find out whether this could also be true for breastfeeding. AAP

ARE YOU A COFFEE OR TEA PERSON? Are you a tea person or a coffee person? If you’re a coffee person, you’re in the majority. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, nearly half the population (46 per cent) drinks coffee, while only 38 per cent drinks tea. However, age is a determining factor in your bevvy of choice. Only one in 20 under-18s drink coffee, rising to one in three for ages 19 to 30 and two in three for adults aged 51 to 70. The average amount of coffee consumed in a day is 330 millilitres, or a large mug. Tea drinkers sip a little more, at 400 millilitres or two small cups. (ABS 2011–2012)

FINE TUNE YOUR MACHINE Don’t settle for feeling flat and tired all the time, writes Jodi Chapman

U

nderstanding subtle changes in your body, energy, and attitude on a daily basis and not giving into the notion that it’s normal to feel flat, unwell or tired, gives the opportunity to recognise and know that you can, in most cases control how you feel at every moment. Feeling abundance of energy, mental clarity, memory, and a positive mindset, even during stressful times, is easy if you understand the subtleties of your body and know what to adjust when something isn’t right. Most of us have experienced stressful times, however, we’re designed to move forward with positivity eventually. Those who remain in a state of depression, sadness, fatigue, mental exhaustion or ill health often have experienced a biochemical shift during the time of stress, and have not identified the change to be able to repair it. Notoriously, stress has an effect on your hormonal balance and your gut, changing absorption of nutrients, sensitivity to foods, and your bacterial microbiome. All are

necessary to function optimally for production of key nutrients for energy, brain function, fertility, and every other process in the body. No two people will have the same response to stress, nor will they develop the same deficiencies, or react to the same foods.

“Stress has an effect on your hormonal balance and your gut” Identifying your unique responses, and what has changed in your biochemistry hands you the manual to running your body at its optimum for life. There’s no secret to incredible health, its identification, education and dedication. Live the life you deserve and discover what works best for you.

MY OPINION

THE NAKED TRUTH ABOUT CLOTHES

WHERE WILL LOCAL JOBS COME FROM?

You care about where your food comes from and what’s in it, right? Leigh Robshaw asks: can you say the same about your clothing?

Communications specialist Rebecca Grisman says just talking about jobs growth isn’t achieving anything – it’s time to take action.

H

ow much do you know about the bra, undies, shirt, skirt, dress, socks, shoes or thongs you’re wearing right now? Do you know where the fabric was made and who sewed your garments, what dyes were used, how much industrial waste was created, whether the people who made it were paid fairly, and whether animals suffered in its production? It’s like asking someone to point to their spleen – most of us wouldn’t have a clue where it is, but we use it every day. I think of myself as an ethical person, but I don’t put much thought into where my clothes come from. Every day, I wear clothes that have no doubt caused suffering, either to overworked and underpaid people in the developing world, polluted the environment or harmed animals. I’m a fairly conscious consumer when it comes to food, but I’ve had a mental blank around clothing. Not anymore. I’ve just downloaded a great app called Good On You, which lists more than 3000 clothing, footwear and accessory brands available in Australia and New Zealand and rates more than 1000 of them based on three categories: labour, environment and animals. A crowdfunding campaign in July last year raised over $20,000 for the app’s

development and it was launched in November. It was downloaded over 10,000 times in its first week, proving we do care – but we need convenient access to the relevant information. Not only does the app make it super easy to find out how ethical your favourite labels are, it lets you send messages to basically harass the naughty brands into picking up their act, or congratulate the saintly ones. I’ve been surprised and disappointed in some well-known brands. Who knew Adidas has been a leader in the Greenpeace ‘Detox’ campaign aimed at eliminating the use of hazardous chemicals? Nike doesn’t have a great record for working conditions, but did you know it has committed to completely phasing out polyvinyl chloride (PVC – the most toxic plastic for children’s health)? Country Road prohibits hazardous dyes and Cue is predominantly Australian made. Bravo. We’re big on teaching our kids where their food comes from – how about we start teaching them – and ourselves – about where their clothes come from too? I can’t sew to save my life, so I’ll be forking out for my kids’ clothes for many years to come, and I’d like to teach them to be conscious consumers, rather than careless consumerholics.

“Do you know where the fabric was made and who sewed your garments?”

A

jobs drive in a region like ours makes sense and is a campaign that regularly crops up. It’s been a good headline throughout the two decades I’ve lived locally. In that time I can identify some key investments and developments on the Sunshine Coast that are actually delivering those jobs too – the university, the new hospital, the expansion of retail centres, the CBD and airport in future. We’re all aware that building new residential communities means cyclical construction jobs for a time. Many of these slated projects, however, are future oriented and meanwhile, the daily commute down the Bruce Highway and beyond continues. At the end of every year, the exodus of youth also continues to go seek jobs elsewhere. So where will the long-term jobs that everyone spruiks and wants to see materialise actually come from? I’ve asked around a lot of small business and chambers of commerce about their potential job creating, as they are the biggest segment of our Sunshine Coast economy. Fact is, few business owners are confident they’ll increase staff at all, some project for maybe one or two people in a decade. It takes exponential spending by customers to justify adding staff. I have sought real job numbers from several government, university and council departments to identify the opportunities and trends out there to flesh out the

anecdotal stories. While tourism, peak bodies and some researchers do have some figures, they don’t pinpoint whether jobs are ‘new’ and who will create them. I specifically tried to review the job market for both unskilled or tertiary trained young people aged from 20 to 35 within our area from Caloundra to Gympie, and there are virtually no statistics or trends available. We also can’t easily reach this group to survey these workers, because most are working elsewhere. So again, where are the jobs going to come from? Our region needs to attract new

“At the end of every year, the exodus of youth also continues to go seek jobs elsewhere” investment, encourage bigger business to relocate here or grow here, and we must get real about the concept of sustainable, long-term, ripple effect job creation that is a true economic generator. We also need to be investing right now in the next generation of business owners, innovators, professionals and entrepreneurs and encouraging them to see our region as sustainable in every sense. We must find, attract, talk to, listen to and back them. Just talking about job creation is not working.

A SNAPSHOT OF RESULTS SEASON Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

A

t the time of writing, the results season is nearing its final days, so we take the opportunity to provide our initial observations. The share market reaction so far has been muted, though this masks some significant moves (positive and negative) at the individual stock level; earnings and dividend growth forecasts have been revised down; and with valuations relatively full, analysts were more inclined to downgrade ratings than upgrade. Nevertheless, there were some bright spots – particularly if one focuses on stocks with balance sheet appeal, and ventures outside the top 20 companies. We outline the key themes below. Ratings downgrades outweigh upgrades: looking broadly across the stocks under our coverage, we have seen

more ratings downgrades from our analysts than upgrades. Bigger is not better: nearly 70 per cent of companies in the ASX20 missed earnings expectations – including AMP, QBE, Insurance Australia, Commonwealth Bank, and CSL. Misses weren’t just limited to earnings either, with Wesfarmers, Woolworths and BHP all declaring lower dividends than the same time last year. As a result, the ASX20 index has lagged other parts of the market – down 0.1 per cent (including dividends) compared to the ASX50 mid-caps which rose nearly 1.5 per cent in the month and the Small Industrials (+0.6 per cent). Banks still face risks – this sector makes up nearly 45 per cent of the ASX20. Despite trading updates that were largely in-line with low expectations, the results still generally exhibited slowing earnings growth, higher loan impairments, compression in interest margins, a build-up of regulatory capital, and hence lower return on equity. Balance sheet appeal: a number of

companies were able to reduce debt and revealed decent capacity on their balance sheet to pursue growth. It would not be surprising to see these companies take advantage of record low interest rates, and use more debt to acquire, and grow, earnings. With analysts usually not factoring in acquisitions into their valuations, there is scope for positive surprises here. Preferred themes: while the currency has not been working in our favour, the stock selection within this theme, as well as in our other themes of Yield Plus, Structural Growth and Cycle Defenders have largely survived reporting season, based on share price performance.

MY TIME

TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe laments getting old and samples an outstanding extra pale ale. Not long ago I would have lept up like someone’s nan with a full bingo card and sprung straight back into action. Not last Sunday people. Last Sunday was a dark day. This getting older thing has been creeping up on me for ages. I mean, I’ve already been through the growing older stage where my friends and I started having babies on purpose. I spend $800 a week on a mortgage now instead of sneakers and beer. I’ve bought expensive cheese, I’ve thrown my back out throwing my shoulder out and I’ve started turning my kids music down to an acceptable level of quiet. Sure I still crank the Beastie Boys well into the 40s in the ute ( hey I gotta fight for my right to party ), but Bieber and Delta can’t go above 15. Not to mention my inability to get out of a bean bag without looking like a freshly caught fish flopping about on the jetty gasping for air. To make things worse, the footy incident isn’t the first sign of the final demise of my youth. I was watching some salacious adult type film the other day and during the nasty bits when the main people had no clothes on I remember thinking, “Geez that’s a nice bed”. What the? I mean, at my age getting lucky means I find my car at the shops.

ou know I just had the realisation that I’m not 20 anymore. In fact, it was more like an epiphany, if an epiphany can be described as extreme lower back pain, bruised ego, a torn heartlidge and a ruptured foofer valve. It was pretty simple really, just a routine kick of the footy with the kids on Dad’s Day, go up for a mark, my boys are all over me like Val Kilmer on a slab of Diet Coke trying to slim down for Top Gun 2. I grab the footy but come crashing down, feel a heap of things in my body, then lie there motionless on the ground trying hard not to let my boys see me crying.

The phone rang last week just after 9pm. What time do you call that? I know, right? It’s downright outrageous to call after 8.30pm unless it’s an emergency. I’m not saying my body’s failing me but seriously, I’m like 41 going on dead. Right now as I’m writing this, the font is billboard size. And the grey hair – don’t even get me started. It’s everywhere. In the old days when I’d use the gents, being a ginger, I’d look down to see CSI Miami’s David Caruso staring back up at me. Nowadays, it’s more like Malcolm Turnbull. Too much info? You know you’re getting older when you realise the Karate Kid is 55 years old. There it is. In one heartbreaking nutshell. Luckily, one bright silver lining this week is the mighty magnificent beast that is the Balter XPA. From the creative minds of some of Australia’s greatest blokes including surfing and shark boxing legend Mick Fanning, comes what I reckon is possibly the Beer of the Year. Balter HQ is located at Currumbin on the Goldy and while the XPA is the first of only three beers planned so far in the Balter universe, this bad boy’s easily got to be their flagship brew for years to come. The XPA’s tropical and floral aroma

combines with an outstanding fruity palette that to quote the makers ‘will punch your tastebuds in the pleasure zone’. This little ripper, based on a traditional American Pale Ale, has been brilliantly concocted by award-winning Aussie brewer Scotty Hargrave, who spent two years honing his craft at Sunshine Coast Brewery. For lovers of hoppy beers, the Balter XPA captures the very essence of coast lifestyle, refreshing, stimulating and down to earth. You’ll find yourself putting a carton away like Matt Preston puts away cheese cakes. I reckon The Balter is off the Richter, even out of a can. It’s the best thing to come out of the Goldy since Margot Robbie. Based on a foundation of tops quality homegrown Queensland goodness, the Balter XPA comes up trumps with a 4.5 out of 5 thumbs up.

BALTER XPA 4 PACK 375ML 5%AV Available from Cellarbrations Brightwater Marketplace, Parklands Marketplace, Wises Road, Buderim and Bellvista Tavern. You can hear Todd Widdicombe on Mix FM.

HANDSOME DEVIL AAP’s Peter Atkinson says the new BMW X540E won’t cost the earth to run.

O

ne point six. As in litres. Per 100 kilometres. The number blinking out from the trip computer just didn’t seem right. After all, I’d been driving for more than an hour, most of it in slow, clogged city traffic. And I was at the wheel of a big, handsome SUV. The BMW X5. But it turns out that number was, indeed, correct. You see, this is no ordinary X5 (if there is such a thing). This is the new BMW X540E – the vanguard of a new string of plug-in hybrid models that add a decidedly green tinge to the BMW range, under the German maker’s new ‘E-Drive’ banner. The concept marries, in this case, a small electric motor with one of the powerful but frugal petrol engines for which BMW has become well known. The result is an X5 that’s just as fast and fun, but massively more fuel-efficient, than any model to previously wear this very successful designation. It has already been joined in BMW showrooms by a petrol-electric 3-Series sedan (the 330E) using the same combination of electric and petrol drivetrains.

These so-called E-Drive models are not the first BMWs to derive their power from the electricity grid. BMW launched its two fully-electric models, the i3 and i8, three years ago. But these new plug-in hybrid variants – so called because they can be recharged via a household power point as well as by the recaptured energy from their engine and brakes like other hybrids – are a more practical solution to the world’s growing energy and warming crises. The X5E brings together all of the things that have made the X5 one of the most successful premium SUVs of all time, but with none of the guilt. No bad feelings about having a big, heavy machine contributing to global warming. No big petrol bills at the end of the month. And, most importantly, no range anxiety that your batteries might go flat and leave you stranded. Using a fully-charged battery and a full fuel tank, this X5 will carry you up to 1000km at an average fuel consumption of just 3.3L/100km. Of course, as mentioned earlier, it’s capable of much lower consumption figures – zero, in fact, if you choose not to

drive it more than 30km at a time – the range of its electric-only mode. Yet it looks, drives and feels pretty much like a normal X5 in most respects. Except, of course, if it drives silently up behind you in its quiet electric mode. Beyond that, you’d almost struggle to tell it from a normal X5. The nicely thought-out, immaculately presented interior, the chunky but athletic exterior lines and the long list of standard equipment remains unchanged in this X5. It does cost north of $118,000 on road

– which is a premium of about $20k over the entry-level model. But it’s likely you could recoup much of that investment through fuel savings over the course of the car’s life. Importantly, there is no compromise in the driving department. Like its BMW “i” range counterparts, the X5E’s acceleration is smooth, linear and surprisingly urgent. This car will reach the speed limit in a very rapid 6.6 seconds, which makes it seriously quick. Using the E-drive button just behind

the gearshifter, you can choose from three distinct modes – Maximum E-Drive that uses purely electric mode; a Save mode that maintains and adds to battery charge levels, and an Auto mode that lets the car choose which power to use and when. It will use the 85kW electric motor to get the car up and rolling – and once it hits about 70km/h the turbocharged fourcylinder petrol engine (providing 180kW) takes over. The transition from one power source to another is almost imperceptible. The only hint to its split personality is the little flap just behind the left-front wheel arch that conceals the electric charge point. Topping up the X5’s batteries is a very simple process – just park and plug into a powerpoint at home overnight – or for a quicker charge you can use one of the numerous fast-charge points now situated around most capital cities. We also tested the sister E-Drive 330E but surprisingly, found the X5 makes the most sense in this guise. Imagine a car with five seats – or an optional seven – that can be driven cleanly, silently and with zero fuel consumption during the week, yet on the weekends can be loaded up with the family’s gear for a couple of days at the beach or the snow. It’s the ultimate in versatility and functionality. The E-Drive also requires less

compromise in the X5 – where its lithium batteries are all but hidden beneath the floor of the cargo hatch. In the 3-Series, the batteries substantially reduce boot space by raising the floor height. Just driving this new, ground-breaking model underscores what a cracking machine this latest-generation X5 really is. It’s a big, handsome and amazingly flexible machine that’s about as complete a family machine as you could hope to buy. With the E-Drive format in place, those traits are magnified. The only thing that’s reduced is the fuel bill.

BMW X5 XDRIVE40E HOW BIG? The X5 is a full-sized SUV that can swallow just about anything a family can throw at it.

HOW FAST? More than adequately, thanks. It will zip to the speed limit in just 6.6 seconds, which compares nicely to virtully any SUV not bearing a high-performance badge.

HOW THIRSTY? Zip. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Amazing. Or, on a long-range trip, you’ll achieve an almost as amazing 3.3L/100km.

HOW MUCH? At $118,900, plus onroads, it’s not cheap but keep in mind you’re getting a city fuel miser, plus a weekend cruiser in one.

FAST CHANGES IN CHINA TO BE DEPICTED ON CAR

he first BMW Art Car designed by a Chinese artist will debut in 2017. Cao Fei, the first Chinese artist commissioned to design a BMW Art Car, says her rolling sculpture will be inspired by the changes in Chinese society over the past decades. Cao Fei will use the installation to interpret the themes of the century such as automated driving and the convergence of virtual worlds and reality. “The car is key to understanding the changes occurring in contemporary Chinese society. The rapid speed of a car and the rapid changes taking place in Chinese society are my inspirations for creating the 18th BMW Art Car. “It will adopt an expressive form completely different from previous ones. It will be an interpretation of the century’s theme, namely that we enter ‘a landscape of no man’s land’, for example autonomous cars and aircraft and virtual reality. Just like previous BMW Art Cars, the 18th vehicle of the collection will participate in a racing event in Asia and then be exhibited in a major museum. Cao Fei is considered one of the most important young artists to have emerged

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Ok, its on…the next round of WSL at Lower Trestles. Who is the dark horse? Remember what Stuart Kennedy did at Snapper? Strap yourself in I reckon, he will release the inner beast. There’s a funny line I simply cannot write – invent one yourself. Now this weekend, Sunday looks pretty sweet on producing the goods. Word is out A Bay has a killer sandbank with nudist convention on. Pack the zinc and hike in. Although lower your expectations on one of the above.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Flathead taking live bait and trolled lures from Maroochy Bar to Goat Island. Whiting along the Twin Waters banks and around Channel Island with yabbies and live worms best. Jew in the mouth of Eudlo Creek and down to the motorway bridge on the night tides. Mud crabs showing up along the banks at Bli Bli. SURF: Chopper tailor moving along North Shore just after sundown with small pillies best. Dart and flathead around the rocks at Pincushion. Sand whiting along Maroochy Beach using pippies and cured beach worms in the low tide gutters. OFFSHORE: The northern end of the Barwon Banks for rosy job fish, squire and pearl perch. Murphy’s reef for spangled emperor and grassy sweetlip, but grinners are in plaque proportions. Plenty of sand crabs north of the Blinker. Water temp around 23 degrees. FRESHWATER: The warmer weather of spring has turned on Somerset with golden perch and bass taking shrimps and deep diving lures. Lake McDonald has bass and Mary River cod on medium diving lures worked along the weed line. Borumba Dam returning toga’s on Bass Bugs and Dahlberg Divers and the usual assortment of flies. Golden perch and jew on earth worms and shrimps. Bass taking “Poltergeist” type lures trolled out from the boat ramp.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20]

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21]

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21]

Hasty remarks or sudden actions could land you in a heap of hot water, especially at work, school or while travelling. Words have the ability to hurt or heal, so choose your comments and conversations wisely. And avoid making a rash decisions.

Bulls are usually slow, steady and considered. Not this week, when Uranus revs up your latent impulsive streak. The lunar eclipse and retro Mercury also shine a bright spotlight on how well you communicate with others.

When it comes to controversial conversations, keep your cool and avoid the temptation to over-talk and over-react [especially on Monday and Tuesday]. You can’t control what others say but you can control your response.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23]

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23]

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23]

This week you may experience mood swings and emotional dramas, as a relationship with a friend flares up. If you keep the lines of communication open, then the storm in a tea cup will soon blow over. When it comes to work matters, don’t play it too safe.

Lively lions are in the mood to be rash! Making a snappy decision may seem like a good idea but it could also backfire badly. And impulsive actions could even lead to an accident so pace yourself. You need to be a clever and cautious cat.

Virgos are such perfectionists but things won’t run smoothly this week, especially involving relationships. If you adapt to changing circumstances, and accept mistakes and misunderstandings with good grace, then you’ll manage just fine.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23]

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22]

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21]

The lunar eclipse lights up your daily routine zone, and Uranus revs up your experimental side. So look for the joy in the everyday; and the magical in the mundane. And the celestial message is to favour imagination over pure logic.

Early in the week you’re in the mood for a spontaneous spending spree – as long as you can afford it. Getting yourself further into debt is a just recipe for disaster. You can also expect a chaotic time as you attempt to make plans friend.

If you expect work matters to proceed at a cracking pace then you’ll be disappointed. Everything will take longer than expected, as retrograde Mercury muddles proceedings and the lunar eclipse provides detours along the way.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20]

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19]

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20]

Have you been burning the midnight oil and now you’re suffering from burnout? Or have you been running around making regrettable remarks? With Mars and Saturn in your solitude zone it’s the perfect week to go AWOL as you slip into hermit mode.

This week Neptune, retrograde Mercury and the lunar eclipse scramble your financial antennae. So it’s not a good time to go on a shopping spree as you’re liable to make financial decisions based on your emotions, which are fluctuating.

Don’t expect everyone to sing your praises at work Pisces. Some colleagues just want to know you can get the job done competently and on time. Friday night’s lunar eclipse increases your creative, spiritual and compassionate side.

THE LAST WORD

KIDS, CAMPING & LOST KEYS Richard O’Leary shares the pros and cons of a camping staycation.

S

o many Sunshine Coasters have told me about the benefits of camping in your own backyard, that I gave it a go on the weekend. Well, I ventured a few kilometres down the road at least, to try out the great outdoors with all the conveniences of home just a short drive away. Like most things in life, there are positives and negatives, so I thought I’d provide some pointers for people who are thinking about doing it themselves. 1. It’s cheaper. Less petrol, although I have to admit we made more than one trip home to feed the dog, get some dry towels after Friday night’s deluge and to find the key to the second car, which had been left in our house during one of those missions. You become a little more complacent about packing when you know you can always duck back.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Camping in town often means a smorgasbord of activities to enjoy…

2. Food is easier. We camped about 20 metres from a great Asian restaurant, which meant few dirty dishes and less burnt offerings from the gas camping stove. 3. Set up is far less exhausting when you have just travelled a short distance to get there – and the pack up is less intimidating when you know it’s just a short drive home to the comfort of your bed. 4. Camping in town often means a smorgasbord of activities to enjoy: inflatable pillow, putt-putt golf, indoor and outdoor cinema and the list goes on.

5. On the flipside, you aren’t allowed to have campfires. The closest we came to smelling that unique smoky aroma was when we unpacked the camper trailer – the bed and canvas reeked of the stuff from our last trip. 6. This is not unique to camps close to home, but I did learn not to park under a fig tree. The duco of my car now resembles a Pollock painting without the equivalent increase in value. 7. I don’t know if the short drive left us with more energy, but it was one of the few times I’ve heard animated debate about the US elections around a campsite. Whatever the reason. Donald Trump is a barbecue stopper even in Australia. 8. You get to experience life as a tourist in your own town. Our experience was mixed, with a cranky old groundsman deciding the perfect time to mention the age limits for kids to go in the spa was in the middle of one of the most explosive tantrums I’ve ever seen. Remember sir, timing is everything. 9. As an alternative to the traditional birthday party for our boys at home – camping close to home with a few friends and family takes the cake – less pressure and more relaxation, which means many happy campers. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
