DID YOU KNOW

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?

Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.

If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you need to number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.

Your vote will help shape Australia.

OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

e try not to blow our own trumpet at My Weekly Preview but I think you would agree it’s fair enough to make some noise about our 400th issue. We couldn’t have done it without you and want to express our sincere thanks and gratitude for your years of support. As a 100 per cent locally owned business our success is your success. And on that slightly self-indulgent note it’s probably appropriate to move on to the subject of our cover story narcissism. When I was a young lad you were just accused of being ‘a bit up yourself’ but nowadays we’re taking the issue a lot more seriously - with some experts predicting the obsession with ‘me’ has the potential to sink society as we know it. You also get to meet an inspiring local doctor, have a quick chat with the woman behind the charity Wishlist, take a cruise to Greece, and find your next home in our property section. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

WELL-WISHER

Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe of Little Mountain has found that anything is possible when proactive people unite to make a difference. FIRST JOB?

FAVOURITE PLACE?

My first real job was with Prime Television in Canberra where I started out as a secretary, dabbled in traffic for a while and ended up in sales. I gave the weather girl position a shot but lost out to Jessica Rowe. Oh, what could’ve been. . .

Moffat Beach.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? My wish is coming true with the opening of our fabulous new tertiary hospital early next year. It’s so much more than a new hospital because it’s introducing state-of-theart equipment and new services that we simply can’t access locally at the moment. With it comes job opportunities for young and old and because it’s a tertiary hospital focused on education and research, we’ll draw specialists to our region from all over the world. Most exciting of all is that Wishlist will move into a beautiful office in a prominent position at the hospital, and out of the demountable we’ve operated from for 18 years behind Nambour Hospital.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? The Wishlist team is focused on the Wishlist Jazz and Wine Festival in Gympie to raise funds for a BiPap ventilator for Gympie Hospital, and our favourite time of year – Mix FM’s Give Me 5 for Kids.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . I live with my partner Tony, daughter Jessica, my dad Errol and our beloved Maltese shih tzu, Jasper. My three brothers, sisters-in-law and their beautiful children live very close by.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET?

FIRST CAR? The first car I actually bought was a Toyota Paseo, my pride and joy

Oh let’s just say I regret my own naivety at times and not directing precious time to what mattered most.

FAVOURITE BOOK?

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

The Guenevere trilogy by Rosalind Miles. I’ve always been fascinated by the legend of King Arthur and I love getting lost in these books.

Jessica is by far my greatest achievement and I’m incredibly proud of the human I helped create. I’m also so proud of what this community has made of Wishlist. Together we’ve achieved so much for Coast families.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney.

FAVOURITE SONG? Thunder Road, Bruce Springsteen.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? It’s all about your attitude so what you put out there is what you’ll get in return.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? I moved here to be with my family 23 years ago from Cairns and can’t see myself ever leaving.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? There is nowhere better on this planet to live, with the weather, the beaches, the lifestyle and having Brisbane so close by. I’ve said it many times while working at Wishlist that there’s nowhere that rallies for it’s own like the Sunshine Coast. I am so grateful the Coast is my home.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST? Noosa National Park for a walk, Happy Valley for a surf, The Drift Bar for a beer and oysters and Alfie’s Mooo Char & Bar for a steak and Moo Juice.

WAS THERE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? Fifteen years ago I applied for the position of Fundraising Coordinator with a local hospital foundation I’d never heard of, thinking I stood little chance. The day I started working for Wishlist was a complete turning point for me because I’ve since learned so much about empowerment, both from a personal perspective and in terms of what is possible when positive, proactive people commit to effecting positive change. Anything is possible.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? Negativity.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH IT? I need to vent or I become a pressure cooker, so I’m lucky I have a partner, work colleagues and friends who are really good listeners. Wine helps too. I also love exercise so a session at CrossFit or a run along Caloundra foreshore generally puts matters back into perspective.

ADVICE TO YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF? Slow down otherwise you’ll blink and you’ll be 47.

TEA OR COFFEE? Coffee – flat white with almond milk.

NRL OR AFL? Queensland in the State of Origin.

COVER STORY

IT’S ALL ABOUT ME

Social media has contributed to a cult of narcissism that if left unchecked, could threaten the fabric of society. WORDS: Richard O’Leary

“What these kids do, they fall over these vacuous people like the Kardashians. The whole narcissism thing is about the gaze of the camera”

A

handsome young man works up a thirst during a stroll on a bright autumn morning. Seeing a lake, he walks over and kneels to drink some water. But even before he can take one mouthful he is distracted by the beauty of his own reflection and stops to stare at his image. He becomes so besotted with himself, and so upset he can’t have the object of his desire, that he dies of sorrow. So goes the story of Narcissus, the subject of Greek myth and the source of the term ‘narcissist’ – someone who is fixated on themselves, especially their physical appearance. Narcissus became the stuff of legend because he was the exception to the rule, but a mounting body of evidence suggests in modern times we are creating a production line of selfobsessed individuals. Dr Lynette Maguire, who studied narcissism for her doctorate at the University of the Sunshine Coast, says the indoctrination of ‘I’ in some cases is starting as early as the first few minutes after birth when a child is named. “In California in 2006 there were over 230 children literally named Unique. The funny thing is, just to make a point that their baby Unique was 12 My Weekly Preview | June 3, 2016

12.indd 1

more special than all those other Unique babies, some mothers and fathers spelt it differently, so there now are eight to nine different spellings. “We’re spelling names differently because our child is so special. There are actually websites out there where you can find a name that nobody else in the world has.” Maguire says the phenomenon of unique names, or at least the attempt to

anyone who was brought up during the Second World War or the Korean War believes in the virtue of contributing to the community – being part of a bigger whole. Baby Boomers, who transformed themselves from hippies in the ‘70s to yuppies in the ‘80s, generally value money and success. She says Generation Xers, who were the first latchkey kids and grew up in the era of dual income families and high

“Their core value above everything else is individuality – so ‘me’, basically. If it’s not good for me I’m not doing it” Dr Lynette Maguire

have them, mirrors a society consumed by narcissism, besotted by itself. Narcissism in this context is the colloquial term about people being all about ‘me’ – not the medical condition Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), which is relatively rare. Her theory on the rise of narcissism centres on a change in core values. Maguire argues, broadly speaking,

divorce rates, place time above everything else. Which leaves the Millennials – the passengers of helicopter parenting who have become the most sheltered generation. Maguire says these kids are well educated, tech savvy and more needy than any generation that has come before them.

“Their core value above everything else is individuality – so ‘me’, basically. If it’s not good for me I’m not doing it. So can you see over that period of time [four generations] we’ve actually gone from the core value of ‘we’ to the core value of ‘me’?” She says when you then add social media and the cult of shallow celebrity to that mix, you create individuals who are more concerned with how they look, than looking after others. “What these kids do, they fall over these vacuous people like the Kardashians. The whole narcissism thing is about the gaze of the camera. “There’s apps now where you can take your photo, put it through the app and it will clear up your skin and brighten your eyes. People are putting up selfies and Photoshopping themselves. So they’re actually portraying the simulacrum – it’s the simulation of the real – but it’s not real.” If social media and narcissism are linked, the numbers tell a compelling story, with 1.4 billion people publishing details of their lives on Facebook – that’s one in every five people on the planet. More than 80 million photographs are uploaded to Instagram each day. But is social media merely an outlet myweeklypreview.com.au

are dropping off. What’s going to happen in the future when we have this generation of narcissists coming in who don’t care, who don’t have the empathy to volunteer? So maybe – and I’m just putting it out there – volunteering will be a thing of the past.” Maguire believes the only way to prevent that future is to warn children about narcissism and to get parents to change the way they do things to try and prevent it happening in the first place. She’s so passionate about the subject that she is running workshops in schools to try

“Social media definitely encourages you to become self-focused. Here’s a picture of my dinner, here’s a picture of the cake I made last week. I mean, who cares?”

You’re So Vain is a 1972 song by Carly Simon. She confirmed last year it was partially about actor Warren Beatty as well as two other unnamed men.

care, you should be pretty bloody grateful the second you get up in the morning, but all you want to know in the budget is what’s in it for me? Where’s my tax break? Where’s my money? And how come our group didn’t get stuff? Whinge, whinge, whinge. Moan, moan, moan.” These sentiments are echoed by McGuire. “What do I see for the future? When you consider that there has been a 540 per cent increase in violence since the 1960s, and a large proportion of this can be linked to a rise in narcissism, I admit I am worried about where we are headed. Basically, we’re becoming more disconnected, more narcissistic and more violent as a culture. “It [the rise in narcissism] will impact commerce in Western culture. For instance, I had a phone call the other day from a not-for-profit organisation saying they’ve noticed the number of volunteers

TINSELTOWN / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

everyone about yourself, I mean, why do you think people even give a toss, quite frankly?” Sharman says this self-obsession is more than just some harmless fun. She believes the consequences could ultimately unstitch the fabric of our society. “It plays out in wider society as well, even just looking at the budget – everyone wants to know, what’s in it for me? You know, you’ve grown up in a country where clean running water comes out of your tap every morning and you have free health

and get our core values to return to ‘we’ rather than ‘me’. Sharman says it’s a huge challenge for this country, and one that isn’t going to be easy to overcome. “It’s a cultural shift [that’s needed] and they’re always the hardest unfortunately. I think that whole issue of gratitude and trying to remember what you need to be grateful for is really important, that’s what we call positive psychology, so a really simple task that people can do is before they roll out of bed in the morning is to muse on five things that they have to be grateful for – the sun is shining, they have food in their belly… really basic stuff. The other thing is to get people to think how their behaviour and their actions impact on others and to try and stop and take stock of that at all times. “That’s a tricky one. It’s a mindset that we’re not used to engaging in in Australia.”

TINSELTOWN / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

for narcissists, or does it create them? A 2010 study by psychology student Soraya Mehdizadeh from York University in Canada analysed Facebook users aged 18 to 25, looking at what types of posts they favoured (self-promotion or selfglorification) and how often they posted. She also evaluated the subjects against the Narcissism Personal Inventory and measured their self-esteem. It’s determination? People who spent more time on Facebook rated higher in narcissism and lower in self-esteem. The findings of Larry Rosen at the California State University are even more damning. His research suggests teens who spend a lot of time on Facebook are more likely to show signs of narcissism. Rosen also argues that overuse of Facebook by teens can make adolescents more vain, aggressive and anti-social, and less likely to succeed at school. A University of Georgia study into social media by Laura Buffardi and W. Keith Campbell may even cause a few social media users to momentarily look up from their screens – it found a correlation between narcissism, having a large number of Facebook friends and publishing self-promoting posts. Lecturer in psychology at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Dr Rachael Sharman, says narcissism is a natural trait – for a two-year-old. But most of us grow out of it. “We have become more self-focused in our Australian culture. Social media definitely encourages you to become self-focused. Here’s a picture of my dinner, here’s a picture of the cake I made last week. I mean, who cares? “There seems to be an obsession, particularly amongst teenagers, to get all these likes and self- approval – and that’s always the case for teenagers. But I think social media has set up a real abnormal platform for that, so people run around trying to collect likes. “So social media certainly has a role to play – and the fact that you’re even constantly posting selfies and telling

Some say the Kardashians have built an empire based on unbridled narcissism.

QLD BALLET TO HOLD DANCE CAMP AT KAWANA

TIME TO THINK GREEN

Young ballet dancers will have the chance to hone their skills with a Queensland Ballet Dance Camp being held on the Sunshine Coast from June 27 to 30. Councillor Peter Cox says the workshop will be held at the Lake Kawana Community Centre and feature a junior program for ages five to 10 and a senior program for students aged 11 to 16. “The aim of the Queensland Ballet Dance Camp is to help raise community awareness about dance, and to reinforce the diverse technical and expressive skills of dance students,’’ he says. Bookings are essential. Phone 5413 1400.

Sunshine Coast Council has partnered with Moreton Bay Regional Council, Regional Development Australia Moreton Bay, Growcom, the Queensland Strawberry Growers Association and the Food and Agribusiness Network to deliver The Sweetest Job campaign. Councillor Steve Robinson says the campaign aims to increase local employment opportunities. The two local regions represent 80 per cent of Queensland’s strawberry production, with growers employing between 6000 to 8000 pickers and packers through August and September.

RARE EXHIBITION WILL DELIGHT A sea of paper butterflies and a garden of delicate, embroidered Australian plants have filled Caloundra Regional Gallery with the opening of two new exhibitions Flora non Evidens and Papillon. Flora non Evidens, a unique installation by award-winning textile artist Karen Richards and Papillon, created by local artist Kim Schoenberger, will be on display at the gallery until July 3. Sunshine Coast councillor Rick Baberowski says these exhibitions are unlike anything gallery visitors may have experienced before.

The best of the best in the Sunshine Coast’s business community are gearing up for this year’s Business Awards, which were officially launched last week at Novotel Twin Waters Resort. Community, business owners and staff members are urged to nominate someone they think stands out from the crowd as a leading local business. Categories include business sector awards, tourism sector awards, excellence awards for key aspects of business performance, an overall business of the year, individual awards and the prestigious Hall of Fame. Winners will be announced on November 12.

Sunshine Coast Council, Moreton Bay Regional Council and more than 30 other stakeholder groups were last week announced as finalists in the 2016 Healthy Waterways Awards for their collective efforts to protect Pumicestone Passage. Environmental portfolio councillor Jenny McKay says the partnership was formed to implement the Pumicestone Passage and Catchment Action Plan in response to declining ecosystem health in the Passage: “The network has improved water quality, restored waterway habitats and promoted the values, understanding and sustainable use of the catchment and waterways. The winners will be announced on July 8.

95 PER CENT

Sunshine Coast Council’s Kids in Action program has been named as a finalist in the 2016 UN Association of Australia World Environment Day Awards. Funded by the Environment Levy, Kids in Action is one of four local government sustainability initiatives competing for top spot in the awards. Environment portfolio councillor Jenny McKay says the council received outstanding survey results from past participants. “When they were surveyed, 95 per cent of the children who attended the 2015 program said they wanted to protect the environment more. The winner will be announced at a presentation dinner in Melbourne on June 6.

TRAVEL

QUICK GREEK GETAWAY A three-day island hopping cruise is a fun and convenient way to experience the highlights of the Greek islands. By Keeley Bolger

T

here’s no mistaking the destination of my cruise. From the blue and white flags, lunchtime language masterclasses, daily dances, mounds of feta cheese at the buffet, bottles of ouzo behind the bar and even the odd ancient poem on the wall, it’s clear from the moment we get on board that we’re heading to Greece. Our whistle-stop three-day voyage will take us to the eternally popular Greek islands Mykonos, Santorini and Patmos, as well as Kusadasi in Turkey. For a first-time cruise passenger and a newcomer to Greece, this is an ideal way to gain my sea legs. Packing in as much as possible during the day, while travelling at night, also means we don’t compromise on sightseeing. After a frantic first day in steamy Athens, spent trekking up to the Acropolis in the mid-afternoon heat and examining artefacts at the blissfully air-conditioned museum, basking in the shade on deck is just what the doctor ordered. We slump down with our plates piled high with

stuffed vine leaves and Greek salads from the buffet, and eat while watching the white churches and pretty homes of Mykonos come into focus. Bar-hoppers trail between taverns dotted along the coast, while those with Euros to burn head to the eclectic boutiques in the cobbled alleys, stocking up on jewellery and designer handbags. Neither big partygoers nor enthusiastic shoppers, my husband and I order reviving takeaway frappes and stroll around the chapels and lanes. But as cooling as the icy coffees are, we can’t resist braving the rocky entry to the sea and diving into the water for a quick pre-dinner dip. After a seafood feast, we toast the day and head off for one last walk, before trotting back to the ship as everyone else on the island gears up for a big night. There are no lie-ins for us the next day, but with a full weekend of exploring on the agenda, rising early isn’t a hardship. First up is a guided walking tour of the ancient metropolis of Ephesus, built in the 10th century BC.

Beautiful interplay of colour and light on the island of Santorini, Greece We linger underneath the Library of Celsus, built to honour the Roman governor, and admire the ruined temples. With a couple of hours to spare, I take advantage of the ship’s spa and have my muscles’ kinks and knots kneaded out with a relaxing massage. And the relaxing vibe continues once we arrive in Patmos. Smaller and less bustling than the other islands we visit, the pretty town boasts the sacred grotto where St John the Evangelist lived. Our last day sees us docking in Heraklion, Crete, to spend the morning at Knossos, the impressive Bronze Age archaeological site and the capital of Minoan Crete.

Although busy here, the guides are slick, moving clusters of visitors around each artefact, ensuring very little overcrowding. For our final afternoon, we head back to the ship and sail towards Santorini. Once the site of a volcanic eruption, Santorini is a tourist hot spot, attracting backpackers, honeymooners, young families and cruise passengers alike. As sunset beckons, we duck away from the competing selfie sticks and settle down on a bench with a cold can of Mythos beer, wowed by the colour of the sea and the sky, as the light disappears. * The writer travelled as a guest of Cosmos Tours & Cruises.

MY OPINION

TAKE THE BRAKES OFF

SAVING PLANET EARTH

Sami Muirhead gets some inspirational life lessons from one of her idols, Ita Buttrose.

Sunshine Coast lawyer Kyle Kimball says we are both negligent and arrogant when it comes to saving the environment.

I

spoke to one of my heroes this week, a living legend and one of the most formidable women in Australia – Ita Buttrose. I have interviewed the Divine Ms B once before, but I was so in awe I could not form words. I stuttered and stammered until Ita snapped: “Oh for God’s sake, get it out, woman!” At that point I went from fan to hardcore stalker. What a woman, to be able to just say that, oh so calmly, to another woman. Bravo! I have paralysis by analysis when it comes to saying anything even remotely confrontational to another person. I am terrible at quick retorts or just saying things as they are in black and white. I tend to pussyfoot around, trying not to offend anyone. I overthink everything and it is exhausting living with 20 people second-guessing each other in my head. I do not remember what happened after Ita verbally bitch-slapped me. But I did take away some life knowledge that day after listening to the 74-year-old address the crowd and tell the working mums in the room you have to want to run in the jungle (the workplace). If you do not want to work late nights, stop whinging and just get out of the jungle. Fast forward a few years and I thought it was time to have another crack at interviewing the founding editor of Cleo magazine. Ita is a representative for about

a billion charities or health organisations, including a role as patron of the Macular Disease Foundation. “We have the ability to live very long lives now and we want to live them in the best shape possible and so everything we do to make sure our health is great benefits us.” said Ita. “You see, my father had macular degeneration and so did three of his siblings, so I have a 50 per cent chance of getting it. So I have my macula checked every 12 months.” With the health pep talk done, I had so many questions for our Ita. Did she or didn’t she get it on with Kerry Packer? Did she personally scope out the talent for the nude male centrefolds in Cleo? And can we really have it all with work and being mums? I know the answer to that last question – you cannot have it all at the same time. So I opted for one long question: What is the secret to all you have accomplished and what is the greatest advice you can give? “Most people doubt themselves,” Ita answered. “I never do. Just do it. What have you got to lose? Take off the brakes once in a while in life. It is that simple.” So join me this week and take off the brakes, whether it’s something as small as ordering a different coffee or as big as a life-changing decision. Don’t secondguess yourself. Push that self-doubt way. And for the record, I did much better in this interview and did not stutter once.

he end is nigh. So what? Another report of record global temperatures, apparently. Anthropogenic activities are bringing us (i.e. anyone or thing inhabiting planet Earth) rapidly toward doomsday and the post-apocalyptic life made famous by Mad Max. Or global warming (sorry, ‘climate change’ for those of you particularly sensitive to the effects of public language) is all part of the great socialist conspiracy for a one world government. If anything, it is becoming cooler, they say. I’ll leave the debate over one world government for another day, but what’s happening depends ultimately on your newsfeed, and the particular world view you wish to adopt. Is modern life really so shallow that the narrative we follow, that which we weave into our own lives, is that which is ‘true’? In the 24-hour news cycle, where everyone has an opinion, and anyone with money has the power to enforce theirs, what is true seems both relative and subject to what matters right now (as opposed to what matters) than ever before. But does it really matter? Regardless of who is right or wrong,

doesn’t the debate over the environment seem a big joke? The whole argument has become as though the environment is something from which we are completely separate, something we visit on weekends with the kids. I expect we will soon discover with great surprise it’s not ‘the’ environment; it’s ‘our’ environment. But then it’s only ours to the extent that we’re in it. This old planet will remain long after we’re gone, brushed off like excess flour on Grandma’s scones. What is it about humanity that makes us think we are so special, so unique and so separated from the planet and everything that inhabits it that we can trash it? Or worse – who are we to be so brash as to save the planet? We can’t save ourselves, so how can we save the planet? And who says it needs saving? Perhaps the next stage of evolution does not include panda bears or kittens. Maybe it is a planet covered with oceans of petrochemicals (the dinosaurs roam the Earth again but in microbe form). And a land mass covered in plastic shopping bags and discarded mobile phones and car tyres. Who on earth are we to say otherwise?

TRANSITION TO RETIREMENT RETHINK Troy Davey is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

T

here is no doubt amongst superannuation professionals that the 2016 Federal Budget has created uncertainty regarding the implementation of certain strategies. One such uncertainty is the transition to retirement strategy. As outlined in my article several weeks ago, the transition to retirement strategy has proven very beneficial to a number of individuals over preservation age (now 56 years of age). A transition to retirement pension enables you to access your superannuation benefits without having to retire from the workforce. The government has proposed the removal of the tax exemption that applies to earnings made while running a transition to retirement pension.

Additionally, they have proposed a reduction in the concessional contribution limit from $35,000 (for those over preservation age) to $25,000. Both of these changes are proposed to come in from July 1, 2017. These two proposed changes really curtail the benefits of implementing the transition to retirement strategy. For example, let’s say you had a transition to retirement pension account worth $400,000 and it was earning about five per cent per annum income – currently you would pay no tax on the $20,000 earned over the year. However, assuming the proposed changes go through, you will start paying $3,000 in tax (concessional rate of tax is 15 per cent) on this investment earning from July 1, 2017. The decision to commence or maintain a transition to retirement pension is heavily dependent on your personal situation. Interestingly, the overall benefit of implementing a transition to retirement pension and concessional contribution strategy

should be marginal post next year. Ultimately, if you are looking to reduce your working hours in the lead-up to retirement, the transition to retirement pension can still provide you with the cashflow required to maintain your lifestyle. You still have over a year to take full advantage of the benefits of implementing the transition to retirement and concessional contribution strategy (assuming the

measures get through parliament). Those over the age of 56 who are still working should review this strategy with their financial adviser before it is too late. PROFILE

COAST SURGEON’S ETHIOPIAN LEGACY Sunshine Coast surgeon Dr Barry Hicks has spent his career working under the most challenging of circumstances. Words Leigh Robshaw

E

thiopia is a country the size of Queensland with a population of 94 million and a drastic shortage of doctors. Sunshine Coast surgeon Dr Barry Hicks is a local hero in his adopted city of Arba Minch in the south, where he’s training a new generation of doctors and surgeons. For many years, Dr Hicks was the only qualified surgeon servicing a population of more than two million people in Arba Minch. He now runs the Dr Hicks Ethiopian Medical Aid Project, overseeing training and provision of facilities. Dr Hicks, who owns a home in Palmwoods, spoke with My Weekly Preview on a recent visit back to the Coast. “Ethiopia has relatively few doctors and surgeons,” he says. “The hospital where we’re teaching medical students is the tertiary institution for two million people, which means we have four surgeons for half the population of Queensland. That’s the drive to keep me there.” In his 2009 memoir, Have Scalpel, Will Travel, he writes about first going to Ethiopia in 1968, having graduated in

to have some live children afterwards. “There was a stage in the 1990s where I averaged 50 operations a week. I had to give all my own anaesthetics as well as doing the surgery. In Australia I’m a general surgeon and in Australia these days, that means a limited amount of surgery. In Ethiopia, we start with the head and end up with the toenails. Every week we have fractured skulls we have to operate on, every week we have to cut off an arm or leg where the local healers have messed things up. “I can remember right back at the very beginning I had a kid in his early teens who had been playing with an old Italian bomb. As a surgeon, I had no eye training, very little orthopedic training and at that stage, no chest training. I had to take out an eye, cut off his arm and there was a piece of bomb sticking in his heart. He went home fit and well, minus an arm and an eye, in about ten days. “Two or three years ago I had a little one-year-old baby that was mauled by a baboon. He would have died without surgery. I repaired his diaphragm and put the intestines back in. I could tell you hundreds of stories like that. Life out there is challenging and fascinating.” The Ethiopian government is running an ambitious program to increase medical education, providing food and shelter to medical students. However there are concerns about overcrowding of facilities causing a substandard education. “The government has increased the number of medical students enormously and opened 20 new medical schools over the last decade,” says Dr Hicks. “I spend most of my time training undergraduates now. My third group of students are due to graduate in a couple of months. “At my age, am I going to hope to do a whole lot more operating and save a lot more lives? No, but I can hopefully train a lot of people.”

Left: Dr Barry Hicks with students. Inset: operating on a newborn baby South Australia as a surgeon at 27 for the sole purpose of helping the world’s neediest in Africa and India. He fell in love with Ethiopia and its people as he began his career working in impoverished hospital theatres, sometimes with his medical text books opened on a violin stand beside him. He dealt with corrupt officials and masochistic witch doctors, and even paid medical staff out of his own pocket.

“I decided to follow Christ as an active part of my life when I was a young child and in doing that, I had the commitment to help underdeveloped countries and be his servant out there.” Now 78, he’s contemplating a retirement Ethiopia isn’t quite ready for. His contract as Associate Professor of Surgery at Arba Minch University ends in July. After 25 years spent living on and off in Ethiopia, he’d like to come home and spend more time with his grandchildren – he and his wife Robin have five of their own children and two adopted Ethiopian sons – but he feels torn. He has been forced to leave Ethiopia at various times due to personal illness, political revolt and government decree. During his Australian stints, he has been the Director of Surgery at Townsville Hospital and a surgeon at Nambour Hospital. But he has always returned to Ethiopia, where his career has been both rewarding and confronting. “I can remember the first ruptured uterus I had to do. I had never been trained as an obstetrician and this lady came in having had a witch doctor pull out her baby and rupture her uterus. That was my introduction in 1968. She went on

BE HERE NOW Jodi Chapman says to be a human being rather than a human doing leads to greater health and happiness.

as life become a project to do rather than to live? Are we losing spontaneity, fun, and a sense of being in the moment at the cost of happiness? We focus on reaching milestones through life, but are we missing those special moments with the people around us that make life meaningful and help us maintain connection? Sometimes life takes a different path and it’s not until then that you realise you’ve missed the content that makes you feel alive. Being human is to feel emotion. Getting lost in the day to day of ‘doing’ disconnects us from that emotion, leading to a loss of joy. In essence, it does affect our biochemistry, lowering levels of the feel-good hormones. Dopamine rises naturally through the bonding experience with a new love or a new child, and can be raised through

exercise, though we can lose it just as easily when we don’t pay attention to the beautiful things, such as the brilliance of a sunset with someone special, a long embrace with your partner or children, or even just enjoying your own quiet moments somewhere peaceful. Letting life unfold rather than forcing a plan may mean seeing opportunities that were otherwise missed and seeing life as an adventure rather than task. Be present and in the moment, connect with people, places and your emotions, rather than your thoughts. Perhaps it’s okay to break the rules, and allow life to happen, live in the moment and let it take you somewhere amazing, somewhere you never expected. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au.

DEBUNKING THE MYTHS

H

alcyon, the most successful over 50s lifestyle developer on the Sunshine Coast is conducting a free information seminar at the Caloundra RSL on Thursday 16 June from 2pm – 4pm. Halcyon Joint Managing Director Dr Bevan Geissmann said the aim of the afternoon is to both educate and inform attendees about a new lifestyle model for over 50s and retirees, which is proving so popular on the Sunshine Coast. “This is the perfect opportunity to come and hear up-to-date information, have your questions answered and hear from people who have already taken the next step,” he says. “Our research has shown that many people aren’t aware of the full suite of living options available when making

“The session will debunk the myths about living in a gated community” decisions about their future lifestyle needs.” “Whether you are planning your next move or in the early stages of thinking about it, come along, you never know, you may hear something new and interesting.” The relaxed afternoon session will debunk the myths about living in a gated community. There’s also a Q and A session with some of the home owners who are already living the lifestyle, and there will be a chance to mingle and chat with them over refreshments. Halcyon, twice winners of Australia’s

Best over 50s living, has recently commenced construction on its third community on the Sunshine Coast and sixth in South East Queensland. Halcyon Lakeside is framed by natural bushland on a unique 13-hectare site within the master planned Parklakes II community at Bli Bli. Along with a range of architect designed homes and an enviable 5-Star lifestyle offering, the new community overlooks two lakes with 450 metres of lake frontage and access to six kilometres of walking tracks and local shopping. Halcyon’s financial model has made it a revolutionary concept for the retirement sector, providing transparency and security for baby boomers. Home owners pay a fixed weekly fee which covers all running and management costs, as well as water and rates charges. There are no exit fees or deferred

management fees. Purchasers pay no stamp duty and have the confidence that they will retain all capital gains when they sell.

Interested parties are encouraged to register to attend the free information seminar by calling 1800 050 555.

MY TIME

Are you a cafe or restaurant owner, chef, grower, muso or venue? Send your news to: mytime@myweeklypreview.com.au

TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe has found a medicinal brew guaranteed to knock his insomnia on the head.

A

s the dreamy Jon Snow from Game of Thrones says, winter is coming – and it’s going to be colder than the hairs on a polar bear’s bum. Well I’ve got news for Jon Snow – winter’s here people, and it feels like it’s already colder than your motherin-law’s heart. It’s the time of year where I dial back my intense fitness regime. I always exercise religiously, at Christmas and Easter, then go into hibernation. Of course as Coasties, we’re lucky our winter lasts about 15 minutes. But still it’s been cold this week and my usually heroic

reflexes have been slow. I was in a bar drinking a margarita on the weekend and the waitress yelled, “Does anyone know CPR?” and I yelled back, “Hell yes, I know the entire alphabet lady!” and we all laughed. Well, all except one guy. I’ve been having trouble sleeping at night, which has led to my napping more than usual at work lately. I’m not sure what’s going on, but the following is a transcript of a typical night at my place. ME: Goodnight. Five minutes later. . . MY BRAIN: Psst, Todd – what disease do you think we have? ME: What? MY BRAIN: Seriously, you should get that mole looked at. ME: Okay, please go to sleep now. MY BRAIN: Hey, you know that big table in the boardroom at work? How do you think they got it through the door in the first place? It’s huge. ME: Yeah, okay quiet time now, time to sleep. MY BRAIN: You know, you haven’t renewed your driver’s licence.

ME: Yeah, I know, tomorrow. MY BRAIN: Have you ever realised there’s no cool way to get out of a hammock? ME: Really? MY BRAIN: Hey, who do you think would win a fight in the car park at work, Rocky in his prime, or Robert De Niro in Raging Bull? ME: Rocky, now please go to sleep. MY BRAIN: I would’ve said Bob De Niro. Bob… that sounds weird… I wonder who calls him Bob? What about a fight between Mr T and He-Man? ME: He-Man, he has the power of Greyskull and stuff. Look that’s enough, go to sleep. MY BRAIN: Cheesy nuggets. ME: Stop it. MY BRAIN: Did you know if you say ‘beer can’ with a British accent it actually sounds like you’ve said ‘bacon’ in a Jamaican accent? ME: Yep that’s old news. Now please just go to sleep. Five minutes later. . . MY BRAIN: Pssst, Todd. You need to pee. ME: Aaahhhhh. Luckily for me and many other restless peeps, there’s a cracking medicinal elixir that can settle even the most curious of brains. It’s a little winter gift from the gods at Little Creatures.

This is LC’s second winter seasonal and the challenge was to create a full-flavoured, complex stout that could be enjoyed all year round. Nailed it. Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the Hotchkiss Six Domestic Stout. This little ripper is a super smooth stout with dark chocolate qualities, a hint of roasted coffee and caramel, and a tops mix of aniseed and fruity aromas. The Hotchkiss Six is an exceptionally well balanced drop and not as heavy going as most dark beers. Normally I’d swerve stout like Clive Palmer swerves fruit and decency, but this latest LC creation has me hooked. Perfect for these cold mornings where beer ain’t just for breakfast anymore. I give the Little Creatures Hotchkiss Six Domestic Stout a solid four out of five thumbs up. ME: Ace beer. MY BRAIN: Do penguins have knees? A STORY OF SUCCESS

I

t’s been a long, but rewarding road trip for the Crick’s Volkswagen dealership on the Sunshine Coast. The journey started at a small site on Sugar Road with just a handful of cars and hardly any staff. General Manager Dean Stuart says it was late 2000 when Cricks took over Volkswagen from another car dealer. “The dealer before us sold 12 cars in a year. We sold 12 in the first month” Stuart says. “The product was typical of most European cars back then – Australia was almost dictated to about what we got, and unfortunately Australia got the older models which weren’t the best ones. The cars were good, but they weren’t great. “We had a general manager and a sales person in a pokey little place to get our cars into. There were two people in the service department, and that was kind of it, and we didn’t know what to expect. “From day one it started to get a roll on. We had a few passenger cars, a few vans. It just slowly grew from five to six a month to 10 to 12 a month, then 15 to 20 a continued over>

<from previous page month and by that stage (2004) we were in a new showroom in Sugar Road, and then it shot off again.” Principal dealer Sam Bohner says the move to the new showroom in Flinders Lane in Maroochydore follows record sales of Volkswagen vehicles. “Why have we gone to all this trouble? We recently sold our 10,000th Volkswagen, basically in the last 11 years. So we’ve seen the growth in the brand,” Bohner says.

“The workshop is massive. We’ve got 18 bays in there, which are full each day. We have 45 to 55 cars a day come in. . .” “I’ve been with the company for about 10 years now and when I started we were only doing about 25 Volkswagens a month and now we’re closer to 100.” “So not only has the brand grown, but we have grown significantly with it and it got to the point that our Sugar Road facility, and the growth in Volkswagen, as well as the growth in the other brands,

meant it was bursting at the seams. So we needed a bit of relief, and being the biggest out of those brands, Volkswagen was the obvious choice for this type of investment.” The new showroom may be just down the road from the old one – but there is a world of difference for customers. Stuart says there are now more than 200 Volkswagens for sale, 48 staff and the most modern service equipment in the country, including car hoists with internet so each car can be electronically connected to its German maker. “The workshop is massive. We’ve got 18 bays in there, which are full each day. We have 45 to 55 cars a day come in, which is pretty extraordinary when you think about that – that’s 21 days a month normally, and that number is very constant,” Stuart says. “And that’s not just servicing, that’s diagnostics, warranty etc. So there’s a fair bit more to it than just servicing the car. We’ve got three full time diagnosis technicians who are at the cutting edge of knowing what the latest trends are in concerns for vehicles. “And that is just the start, the entire facility is state-of-the-art, all with the intention of providing the best possible experience for the customer.”

WHAT MAKES VW DIFFERENT

I

n just 16 years the Volkswagen dealer on the Sunshine Coast has gone from selling one vehicle a month to more than 100 a month – and along the way become the third biggest seller of Volkswagen commercial vehicles in Australia. Dealer Principal Sam Bohner says one of the secrets of that success has been the price going down, while the quality of the car has been going up. “The product has always been exceptional and it’s as exceptional as ever, but what has happened is the price has dropped and dropped, and it’s become more affordable. Ten years ago our average sale price on a Golf was $36,000. Now the entry level Golf is $23,000, and it’s actually a better specced car than half the cars we were selling 10 years ago,” Bohner says. General manager Dean Stuart says the cars tick all the right boxes – but their driveability is always the ultimate selling point. “The one thing that separates Volkswagen from every other car is the drive,” Stuart says. “We can talk about all the features

myweeklypreview.com.au

37.indd 1

you like, but it’s when you drive it that you go ‘wow – this is what a Volkswagen is like’. What separates it from everyone else in terms of driveability and the value for money component? You can look at it, read a brochure, but it’s only when you drive it that you really notice it.

“We can talk about all the features you like, but it’s when you drive it that you go ‘wow – this is what a Volkswagen is like’ “It’s hard to put into words because it’s what you feel, it’s not what you know. You can know everything about the car but when you drive it, you notice the difference. “What I say to my team is if no one wants to listen, or wants a brochure, at continued over>

<from previous page least throw them the keys and take them for a drive because they’ll drive it and go ‘wow – it’s really good’. It’s like driving a Mercedes Benz with a Japanese car price tag.” Stuart says driveability appeals to people of any age, gender or walk of life. “We’ve just sold a [VW] Golf to a 17-year-old, she just wanted the quality. And that’s the thing when you drive it. You know. So there’s her at 17. And then yesterday, we had some 80-year-olds trading in their car for a Jetta. So there’s no set group of people, there’s both ends of the spectrum and everything in between. “We can sell a Polo at $15,990 to someone who is just getting their licence for the first time, or, to the person who has just moved into a retirement village, they’ve got their campervan and they just need a car to get around to the shops.” Golf is the biggest seller, followed by Polo, Jetta, and Passat, while more people are opting for the Volkswagen’s ute the Amarok, and VW’s luxury vehicle the Touareg.

A DRIVING FORCE FROM DAY ONE

I

t was just over 20 years ago when Garry Crick opened his first car dealership on the Sunshine Coast and now the Crick Auto Group owns a dozen dealerships across Queensland. My Weekly Preview recently caught up with Garry to talk cars, the secret to successs, and what the future holds for him and his businesses. How did the Cricks dealership journey begin? In 1995, I bought Nambour Nissan and Mitsubishi from Ray Grace – 43 vehicles all up including trucks. How many dealerships are there now? Twelve dealerships representing 24 new car brands. Our locations include Tweed Heads, South Brisbane, Rockhampton and eight dealerships on the Sunshine Coast employing over 600 locals in total. When you started, in your wildest dreams did you imagine you would be where you are today? I knew I wanted to build a good business that grew with the Coast but no, I probably didn’t know it would end up as

big as it has. How has the car business changed from the days when you started? What are the biggest differences between now and then? Mostly the technology in the cars and the way in which we communicate with

low volume, hard to sell brand. I felt that with their international presence, they would take off eventually. My timing was pretty lucky and around three years later VW started to get some traction and it went from good to great from there on in.

“Many people laughed at me, saying VW has been around for 45 years and is a low volume, hard to sell brand” our customers. The basics are the same, but dealership standards for customer lounges and showrooms have improved vastly. Most businesses face the same issues of trying to improve the customer interface/services to keep up with growing demands. Why did decide to open a Volkswagen dealership in 2000? Many people laughed at me, saying VW has been around for 45 years and is a

What has been the most rewarding thing about the growth of the Volkswagen business? That’s a hard question to answer and hard to explain, but watching a part of a business and the people grow is very rewarding. What’s the best part for you about opening this new Volkswagen showroom? I think it’s a great facility and when we

build a new facility we try to improve each one for the customers and staff. Each time we try to get it better and better. Why do you think the Volkswagen business has been so successful on the Sunshine Coast? It’s a great brand and lovely product. I own one personally – I like them that much. When you look at your career in the car business – what has been the secret of your success? Like any business, it’s having great staff and looking after them and they in turn look after our customers. If you have happy staff, you generally have happy customers, and if you top that up with good disciplines you mostly have a good business. Where to now – what’s the future for the Crick Auto Group? We have got lots of things we still want to do, but the fundamentals will stay the same. What does the future hold for Garry Crick? Lots hopefully, I enjoy life and family and keep myself extremely busy which works for me. continued over>

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

What is your excuse? Just watched Bethany Hamilton score a 9 at Fiji and beat Tyler Wright. She is a mother, wife and is missing one arm which she lost in a shark attack a few years ago. Wow! So no excuses ladies and gents! I am blown away with what I just witnessed. Looks like a serious jump in swell this weekend. They are predicting strong north east winds so sadly all roads lead to Happy Valley or if you have a 4WD Double Island could be pumping ! Monday the wind may well swing SW and if that happens… game on everywhere! So get amongst it peeps, no excuses!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream numbers are improving with the cooler weather. Fowl gut and mullet fillet are returning the better quality fish around Channel and Goat Islands on the night rising tides. Whiting are taking yabbies along the Twin Waters banks. You can get flathead on live baits around the motorway bridge pylons. SURF: You can find chopper tailor at dusk along the north shore of the Maroochy mouth, and there are good sized dart in the early mornings. Whiting and dart are working holes around Mudjimba with worms and pippies the best baits. The Pincushion area is best for tailor and jew with mullet fillet and pillies the bait to use. Tailor will improve in quantity and quality with the true onset of the winter months. OFFSHORE: The Barwon Banks are worth a visit if conditions allow. These banks have been firing for squire, rosy job fish and parrot but don’t just anchor on a GPS mark, you must hunt to find fish or berley to attract them. The Gneerings, Murphy’s Reef and Coolum Reef are returning mixed reef fish. FRESHWATER: Golden perch and bass are attacking anything green at Somerset during bright sunny days, with live shrimps working early morning and dusk. Baroon Pocket Dam is returning heaps of spangled perch for fun and bass on jigged lures, as well as plastics. You can get saratoga at Borumba on floated baits and flies.

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) Your imagination is firing and creative ideas could strike at any time so make sure you have your phone, laptop or pen and paper in easy reach. Thursday and Friday are tricky days though, when impulsive words and hasty actions could lead to messy misunderstandings.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) You’re likely to feel extremely unsettled on Thursday or Friday, as trivial matters irritate you. Calm down before you blow a fuse! Saturn urges you to be more responsible about your physical and emotional wellbeing.

LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) The week starts well, when Venus hooks up with the Sun (your power planet) and your charisma shine. Creativity is stimulated, dreams are big and aspirations are golden. Don’t get too cocky though (or flirt your way into a romantic fiasco).

VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) Jupiter is moving through your sign, which will give you a huge confidence boost … if you let it. Don’t allow other people’s perception of who they think you should be crowd out your own vision of your preferred future. If you are true, then success will follow.

LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) Activities involving education, travel and networking are all favoured, as you extend your peer group to include some fresh faces. At the moment, it’s not what you know but who you know! Money matters look messy, as you impulsively purchase something.

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) This week looks tricky to navigate, because Mars reverses through your sign and opposes Mercury (plus Pluto opposes the Moon). So expect some intense exchanges with others, as you feel frustrated and clear communication is compromised.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Taskmaster Saturn is still reversing through your sign, which is frustrating. But it also teaches you a valuable lesson that ideas must be brought from the abstract astral realm and transformed into concrete reality down here on planet Earth.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) With powerful Pluto reversing though your sign, plus Mars and Saturn (your ruler) both retrograde too, it’s a frustrating time. But, in your desire to get ahead, you’re likely to arouse opposition in others. Avoid bossing people around, as it will only make matters worse.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) It’s a wonderful week to share a creative new activity with a special child, teenager or friend. And how long has it been since you had heaps of fun with your own inner child? But you may feel as if a cherished dream is taking forever to come true.

PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) Home sweet home is a pleasant place to be on Monday and Tuesday, when the Sun and Venus visit your domestic zone. So it’s a suitable time to entertain family and friends, buy something special for your home, or beautify your living space.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) Mars (your power planet) is still in retrograde mode (until June 30) which can make you feel frustrated as motivation is muted and projects seem to be permanently stalled. You’re full of fabulous ideas, but it’s just not the right time to put them into action.

THE LAST WORD

TENNIS TANTRUMS Richard O’Leary says our kids could teach Nick Kyrgios a thing or two about being a good sport.

T

here’s been a bit of talk recently about Nick Kyrgios, that Aussie tennis brat with an oversized ego and a mouth to match, and what needs to be done to curb his bad behaviour and introduce some sportsmanship and a sense of fair play into his game. The latest outcry follows a code violation for his allegedly contemptuous treatment of a ball boy during his opening round match at the French Open. The young Aussie – who has won one title in his professional career and is ranked number 19 in the world – has hardly endeared himself to Australian fans after repeated brat attacks. But what do you do to try and curb his bad behaviour? Big fines? Hardly a deterrent for a bloke worth millions. Public shaming? He seems to love the publicity – good or bad. How about learning from the experts?

After all, if you want to improve your tennis game, you watch how the champions go about their business. So why not do the same in order to become a good sport? I’d suggest our local soccer fields on a Saturday would be a good starting point. From what I’ve seen over the past couple of years, the players and coaches could certainly teach Kyrgios a thing or two. To give you one example, the coach of my eldest son’s under 8s team has started a great tradition where instead of giving three cheers at the end of the game, each player says something good about the other team. “Your goalie made some great saves.” “Your passing was really good.” “That first goal was such a good kick.” Regardless of the result, both teams walk away feeling good about themselves. The approach is the initiative of one coach, but is also a reflection of a competition that encourages fair play.

A short while ago, as manager of my son’s team, I received an email from the Sunshine Coast Churches Soccer Association. It emphasised how fun was the most important thing in junior games, and outlined a few tips to help make sure everyone had a good time. They suggested things like a mercy rule, where you stop counting once a team scores 10 goals, and giving all players the chance to score by having them change positions during the game. That might not suit everyone – I know how upset some people get with the ‘every child gets a ribbon’ philosophy – but it is under 8s. And along the way, the players will learn not only how to be good at sport, but to be good sports – something some athletes never learn.
