My St Margarets Welcome to the second edition of the My St Margaret’s magazine. HAVING HAD SUCH AN OVERWHELMING RESPONSE TO OUR FIRST EDITION AT CHRISTMAS, WE HAVE INCREASED THE NUMBER OF PAGES BY 50% AND DECIDED TO PUBLISH THE MAGAZINE AT LEAST 3 TIMES EVERY YEAR. The launch of www.mystmargarets.com has proved an exciting few months for the St Margarets Trader’s Association. Not only does the site provide useful information about your local traders but it also offers fantastic, exclusive deals and competitions. Recently, one lucky reader won a fabulous camera worth £700 for just expressing why she loved St Margarets! This magazine not only promotes our local businesses but also features some interesting articles from the community, such as those provided by St Stephens and Orleans Infant Schools on pages 24 and 25, a wonderful fictional story based on a local family of foxes by comedian Milton Jones on page 18 and a very interesting piece by local writer Martyn Day about the Kilmorey Mausoleum on page 16. We are delighted to welcome onboard a host of local experts who will contribute articles to My St Margarets on a variety of topics including food, gardening and antiques. I’ve included their contact details so you can email them directly with questions or ideas for future issues. Summer will be arriving shortly and soon there will be an opportunity to experiment with some al fresco recipes provided by our experts at Armstrong’s and Yellowwedge where all the ingredients can be sourced locally - even the candles to decorate your table are available locally. Flavour Saviour

The foodie press has been obsessing of late about new ways with flavour, from Laura Santtini’s Umami paste to the arrival of Pierre Hermé’s strawberry and wasabi macaroons in the food hall at Selfridges, which to my enlightened St Margarets’ readers is surely all so much rosewater under the Emma Bridgewater spoon-rests by now. But the eagle eyed may recently have spotted the crest of the latest flavour wave about to break upon our culinary shores – Verjuice, or Verjus, an ancient condiment now enjoying a revival, thanks in no small part to new South African producer, The Verjuice Co. Happily yellowwedge are their first London stockist. Verjuice is an unfermented grape juice made by pressing unripe grapes. It has been with us since the middle ages and it was originally used in many contexts where today we’d use either wine, lemon juice or vinegar. The Verjuice Co make varieties from red and white grapes, and a caramelised Verjuice syrup. In my kitchen we’ve already been using Verjuice to deglaze roasting pans and to enrich casseroles and stews, in reductions, beurres blancs, and more. I find it works really well in cutting the richness of a creamy sauce. And as the summer months roll round it’ll be appearing in salad dressings, soups, pasta sauces and fruit salads – in fact if you’re round for dinner anytime soon it’s very likely there’ll be Verjuice involved somewhere! The caramelised Verjuice syrup is great brushed onto roast chicken towards the end of cooking, used on the barbeque, or you might like to drizzle some over a fresh young goat’s cheese like Trickle or Chabis Feuille.
Philip Brocklehurst cofounded yellowwedge cheese with David Harries in 2007, and 10 months later they collected the Best New Deli award at the British Cheese Awards. Philip and David, now fixtures on the local food scene, also provide bespoke cheese tasting events and are judges for various national food awards.
As I mentioned, the mainstream food press are catching on fast to the offerings from The Verjuice Co [the Evening Standard and the Radio 4 Food Programme are the latest as I write this], so strike while the skillet’s hot and be in the vanguard of the Verjuice cognoscenti, before it starts appearing on the shelves of every Tom, Dick and Harvey Nicks. Elsewhere on the page I’ve included some of my favourite summer recipes, a couple now enlivened by the addition of Verjuice. Let me know when you’re rustling them up, I’ll bring the cheese... A Summer Garden Supper To my mind... the only thing better than sharing good food with good friends, is sharing it OUTSIDE in the garden on a balmy summer evening. Mojitos in the sun to start, lanterns and candles by the end, and in between platters piled with the best the season has to offer. And for the menu here not only can you buy all the ingredients locally [yellowwedge, Armstrong’s, Zoran’s and Street’s should cover it] but most of the work can be done in advance, leaving you all the more time to relax and enjoy that Mojito.
Tarragon Chicken Use one skin on chicken breast per person. The day before poach the chicken in water and as it comes to the boil add a mirepoix of finely diced carrot, celery and onion, and a couple of sprigs of tarragon. Simmer for 10 minutes and then allow to cool in the poaching liquor. Remove the skins and wrap the breasts in foil, reserving the liquor. On the day mix 60ml mayonnaise and a desert spoon of the stock per chicken breast with some chopped fresh tarragon. Slice the chicken, cover with the mayonnaise and chill for at least three hours. Serve with slices of lemon and some more fresh tarragon scattered over.
Salad of Chicory, Pear, Blue Cheese and Pecans Make a salad of chicory, diced pears, broken pecan nuts and crumbled Harbourne or Beenleigh blue cheese, and dress with simple vinaigrette using 1 part red Verjuice, 1 part cider vinegar, 5 parts olive oil and a dollop of whole grain mustard.
Griddled Asparagus In a ridged pan griddle some asparagus spears which have been tossed in olive oil, salt and pepper. Sprinkle with a few drops of white Verjuice and serve at room [garden?] temperature.
Potato and Rosemary Sourdough Pain Grillé with Gruyere Take thin slices of potato and rosemary sourdough bread and drizzle with good olive oil. Top with grated Gruyere and place in a hot oven for around 8 minutes. Serve warm.
Pea, Pancetta and Parmesan Caesar
Per person: • 100g Peas • A small handful of pea shoots • 25g Pancetta cubes • 1 tablespoon of grated Parmesan • A few drops of white Verjuice. • 2 tablespoons Caesar salad dressing [you can make your own but I always buy Cardini’s]
If ever I am stranded on a desert island please, please let it be blessed with a pea plantation, for I cannot imagine life without peas. This dish celebrates their sweet earthy flavour and compliments it with salty, creamy savouriness.
First slowly fry the pancetta until it has released its fat and is nicely crisp. Blanch the peas, refresh in iced water, and drain. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and stir in the warm fat from the pancetta. Divide into individual ring moulds and chill for an hour or so. The finished rounds will not completely hold their shape, but that is part of their charm. Try this with some poached salmon and buttered Jersey Royals.

KILMOREY MAUSOLEUM In times past it was only the passengers on the top deck of the bus which used to run past the Ailsa Tavern that had any chance of seeing the architectural gem. Tucked away behind a high brick wall Kilmorey Mausoleum was unknown to most people.
esigned in the early 1850’s in fashionable Egyptian style by H.E. Kendall the £30,000 mausolem built from pink and grey marble was commissioned by the 2nd Earl of Kilmorey, Francis ‘Black Jack’ Needham, as an eternal resting place for his mistress Priscilla Hoste. When Priscilla died from a heart condition in 1854 the mausoleum was erected on a plot of land secured by the Earl at Brompton Cemetery. Priscilla’s coffin, inscribed with the words “the beloved of Francis Jack Earl of Kilmorey” was placed inside under a marble relief showing Priscilla on her deathbed with the Earl and their son Charles at her side.

In 1862 Black Jack moved to Woburn Park in Chertsey and the mausoleum, with Priscilla inside, went with him. Six years later Jack moved again, this time to Gordon House in north St. Margarets and the mausoleum with Priscilla still firmly ensconced went with him to its present location opposite the Ailsa Tavern on St Margarets Road.

Such was his anticipation of joining Priscilla in marble splendour that Jack had a tunnel dug from Gordon House to the mausoleum in order, it is said, that he could be wheeled there on a trolley in rehearsal of his own funeral. In 1994 the mausoleum became the responsibility of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames who, working closely with volunteers from Environment Trust, have cleared the site and now open the mausoleum and the award-winning wildlife garden that surrounds it to the public.
Opening dates this year are May 1st, June 13th, July 24th and September 18th. Priscilla is still lying in the mausoleum in her inscribed coffin but now she is no longer alone. Since 1880 she has shared her marbled isolation with Francis “Black Jack” Needham 2nd Earl of Kilmorey…and four times a year, visitors from the neighbourhood.

His wife Daphne goes through peoples’ bins, and then sells the same stuff back again through a charity shop in Twickenham. They have three cubs Hucknall, Halliwell and Kinnock. You may have heard them screeching in the night.
JANUARY
FEBRUARY Depressing month this. Here we sit in an eternal triangle between the railway, the flight-path and the A316. It’s usually around this time of year Daphne says she wants to go and live in the country. But I have a cousin in the country and as he says - at least in the town the only thing people ever hunt for is a parking space. Cabin fever that’s all it is – she’s spent too much time indoors surrounded by stripped pine. She’ll forget it when the sun comes out and she’s yapping away with all the other vixens at the tables outside the coffee shops. By the way I’ve started tunnelling from our place towards the local school. Well, then we can say we live much nearer, and as everyone knows round here, extending is cheaper than moving.
MARCH This is the time of year people start spring-cleaning. I can’t tell you how many moles I’ve caught blinking in the sunshine down by the riverbank. The daffodils are late this year. No-one wants to be the first to turn up at a party I guess, most prefer to wait till it warms up a bit. Meanwhile we’re all stuck indoors and the ginger triplets are driving us crazy – perhaps its too much orange squash? My only light relief has been wandering round the farmers’ market in Richmond, daring them to chase me. The free-range chicken man got particularly upset. But at last the first candy pink blossom is out, and the birds are singing cover versions of the tunes their parents sang before them. And so it all begins again. This is a pleasant place to live. Perhaps I should try and give something back; who knows I might even run for a seat on the council. Yes, because I see there are even more of those green parakeets about! Who do they think they are? They act as if they own the place!
APRIL At last, summer is on its way - I can’t wait until the days are long again, the shrubbery is dense and there are all those picnic leftovers from the washed out concerts in Marble Hill Park. Oh and the good news is that Kinnock has got in to our first choice school. The bad news is that he got in through a hole in the roof, and that he made a right mess in the kitchens. That’s my boy! That tutor’s paying off already. But here’s to a lazy summer with hot pavements, and blue skies. The other good news is that we’ve sorted out a summer holiday. Do you know the Portuguese Algarve? Well there’s this family in Cole Park Road who’re going there for August, and we’re going to have their house – just no-one mention it to them, alright?

Snow! The first day it arrived the cubs wanted me to go and make a snow-fox with them in Moor Mead Park. But I don’t trust the stuff, it shows everything up for what it is - people playing, red fur, and incriminating paw prints. Besides, I can’t be playing, I’ve got business to do, for a start we’ve got to get all of them into our first choice school - there aren’t enough places you see. Daphne says we might have to move nearer. At the moment we live in ‘a garden flat with easy access to the station’ as the estate agent described it. A hole under the platform is the reality, and you can’t swing a cat in there - and believe me I’ve tried. Yes, I’m also a bit worried about Kinnock, our youngest – he refuses to chase pigeons. I think he might need a tutor – because you have to be a go-getter if you want to succeed around here.
At least we’ve seen the back of that snow. But now of course, Daphne wants to go ski-ing!

St Margarets Community Website aunched in March 2005, the St Margarets Community Website (www.stmgrts.org.uk) has been publishing week-in and week-out ever since. Editorially the site covers everything from community events to controversial planning debates to local history and even recipes. Over the years it has become an important voice in the community and we wanted to know more about how the site was created and where is it headed?

The site’s founder, Peter Mahnke and his family, moved to St Margarets in 2001 from New York City, where community sites were already well established, he always felt that St Margarets needed its own site. In 2005, two things happened; Peter lost his job, giving him some free time, and perhaps more amazingly, he found others interested in helping. They started meeting weekly at Zoran's and began planning the editorial guidelines, content and initial marketing of a community website. After about three months, the core of the site was in place and on 22 March 2005, the first article was posted, ironically titled 'Twickenham Riverside is Finally Getting Cleaned Up'.

Initially, all of the articles were written by the site’s founding three: Peter, Ann Murray and Simon Chapman. According to Peter: “In the early days, the site wasn't well known and we had to write all the content ourselves. But the goal was always to get the local community to provide the content. We knew that if we keep publishing the site with the articles we wanted to read and on a regular

How does the site make money? “It doesn’t. There is no advertising. All the effort of creating and maintaining the site are volunteered. The hosting costs are donated.”
How do you decide what to publish?
What are your favourite articles and why? “I love every single article by Martyn Day. He is a wonderful writer – very funny and insightful. If I could give a ‘community award’, and perhaps I should, it would go to him first. I also loved the articles we used to do about what to do with your children over holidays; I wish I could find someone to do those again. Finally, I love the events. We are very lucky to be surrounded by amazing cultural sites and events, but it is still relatively hard to find out what is happening.”
What has been the most popular article? “You would never guess. Most people probably think it was all the planning debate around Parvinu, or the hard work to stop Tesco from abusing the loading bays and bus stops, but it is actually one called “Beware Bogus 'Charities' and Third World Appeals” from

Any plans for the future? “Since the site already takes me around six hours a week just to keep it updated, I don’t have time to do a lot new. However, the St Margarets Traders Association has offered to help me clean up the directory, which is greatly appreciated. Oh, and I have a few good friends looking at a redesign.”
Could local people help more? “Of course. More articles, more events please. If you run a local group or have an interesting story, less us know. FAQ’s Q: Well we’ve bought a new puppy/kitten, what do we do now? A: Firstly check it's health. If you have bought it from a reputable breeder you should have documents showing its inoculation history. Usually the animal has already had an injection and you are now waiting (normally 2-4 weeks) for the second injection. In most cases puppies will have been vaccinated against distemper, canine hepatitis, parvo virus, Para influenza virus and leptospirosis, although some breeders do not vaccinate against all of these diseases if the puppy is less than 8 weeks old. Kittens are usually vaccinated against the cat 'flu viruses, feline enteritis, and sometimes feline leukaemia virus. As their immune system is immature at this age it is very important that during this time you do not let your animal come into contact with other cats and dogs, as they may not have been vaccinated and could be carrying a disease that could harm your new pet. Assuming that all is going well, check on the kind of food you are giving you new pet. The breeder will no doubt have given you some food for the first week or so. It is important you keep him on this for a short while. But after a few days check the ingredients of the food and make sure it is right for your animal. If in doubt, come and see us at 47b Crown Road, St Margarets and we will give you unbiased advice. Always have lots of water available as kittens and puppies can get dehydrated very quickly. If there are any problems with eating and drinking, or any episodes of vomiting or diarrhoea, seek advice from your vet right away. Your vet can also advise you on worming, flea treatments and microchipping. Q: Should I Train My Puppy? A: Training is fundamental to puppies’ development. Dogs that respond positively to their owners are much more of a pleasure to live with. Unfortunately puppies do not come with an instruction manual therefore training not only helps you to better understand your dog but teaches you how to help them to learn what you want from them. It also enables you to develop a strong bond and have a clearer understanding of what they are communicating. Besides, well-trained dogs are friendlier and research now shows that it makes them smarter too! Puppies can be enrolled in to a puppy class from 12-20 weeks. But please ensure trainers use only kind and reward-based methods and not punitive techniques, such as rattle cans or water squirters. Such devices are cruel and can instill fear onto your puppy. Q: What kind of food should I be giving my pet? A: There are so many foods on the market today you can be forgiven for being confused. A: This can be a very real problem for some owners - leading to unnecessary operations and expense. Happily the solution is quite simple. Q: How much exercise do dogs need?

A: Well the rule of thumb is that the bigger the dog the more exercise he will need. But this isn’t always true. In fact, it is very important not to over-exercise large breed dogs during the first year of their life, because this can lead to some joint development problems. Jack Russell’s however need quite a bit of exercise, as do the ‘working’ breeds of dogs. Fortunately there are many excellent dog books available, which will give you a good idea what to expect and what breed might be best for you. For example ‘The Encyclopedia Of The Dog’ by Bruce Fogle (A Dorling Kindersley Publication) illustrates many of the most popular breeds and describes the animal’s characteristics and special needs each dog has. Remember there are over 350 breeds of dog; so good research is essential to help you to better understand your pet and your pet's requirements. Q: Are there any animal diseases around Twickenham/Richmond now that I should know about? A: Yes there are. Currently there is a particularly nasty infection called Lungworm. The lungworm Angiostrongylus Vasorum (also known as French Heartworm) is a parasite that infects dogs. The adult of this particular lungworm lives in the heart and major blood vessels supplying the lungs, where it can cause a host of problems. Left untreated, the infection can often be fatal. The lungworm parasite is carried by slugs and snails and the problem arises when dogs eat these common garden pests. The symptoms include coughing, breathing problems and also general illness, and if you are worried that your dog is displaying any of these signs, please take them to your vet for a thorough examination.

Liz Stubbs explained that it had taken several years and hard work, particularly from a committed bunch of parents who have worked closely with caterers to get healthy, freshly cooked food on the plate. The results speak for themselves with an increase from one-third to two thirds of children choosing healthier meals. Not only are a record number of children going for our hot lunches, but also our Star Eater programme earns the children points for regularly eating vegetables and salads. The produce used, is largely organic, and is sourced as locally as possible. A weekly roast lunch has proved incredibly popular and the lunchtime environment is enhanced by background music which is changed weekly. An educational dimension and assurance of freshness is that the herbs used in the lunches are grown onsite by the school's gardening club.
Say Cheese Lunchtimes at St Stephen’s are an opportunity for children to try out new foods. Recently, West Horsley Dairies, the company which supplies dairy products for the school’s cooked lunches, brought in a Children from selection of continental and English cheeses Year 4 get a for the children to tuck into. The school’s lesson in caterers, also cook special themed lunches to cheesemaking tie in with topics the children are studying. Gallic-style dishes were served up on Bastille Day, Caribbean cuisine was the order of the day during Black History Month and American delicacies went down well on the U.S. Presidential Election Day. The children also held their own mini-election and, along with the American public, voted Barack Obama in! The children at St Stephen’s definitely have their finger on the political pulse.

The children even got a chance to admire his mini garden, which he had planted in a bicycle helmet.

Year Six get In the Mood at their 1940s Tea Dance As part of their studies on Britain during the two World Wars, children take part in an authentic Wartime Tea Dance. They jived and waltzed to a selection of wartime tunes played by the St Stephen’s School Orchestra. Energy levels were kept up with a selection of delicious homemade cakes and that favorite wartime tipple – orange squash. And not a powdered egg in sight! Kate Zakomornaya, lead teacher for Year Six, explains:” At St Stephen’s we adopt a cross curricular approach in lessons. So when we are studying a topic the children really immerse themselves in the subject matter because it comes into so many lessons. With our wartime topic, for example, we learn the history of the period in our humanities lessons, get to grips with the economics of the ration book in maths, jive and waltz in P.E. and build a WWI trench in Design and Technology. Events, such as the tea dance, give our children an opportunity to put their learning into practice. As part of this topic we also take the children on a mock evacuation to Surrey and visit sites from the two World Wars during our five-day school journey to Northern France.”

St Stephen’s School runs a mile for charity Raising money for a good cause and thinking about those less fortunate than themselves is important to children at St Stephen’s. So, when they heard about this year’s Sports Relief Mile, children were keen to put on their trainers and join in the fun. Year Six pupils, Zach Leach and Sam Stringer, sent us this report On Friday the 19th of March the whole of St. Stephens C.E Junior School ran the Sport Relief Mile. Children aged from seven to eleven, as well as most of the staff, trooped over to Moormead Park to run a mile for charity. Our teacher, Mr Bennett, measured the pitch and told us all that to run a full mile we would have to go five laps around the edge of the pitch. Although it was a long way we all had fun doing it and knew it was all for a good cause. Everyone really entered into the spirit of the day, dressing in red, the Sport’s Relief colour, painting their faces and wearing silly hats and wigs. Year Six’s Louis Newman said: “It was a great opportunity to help those less fortunate than us in a fun way.” His classmate, Emma Finniss agreed: ”It was awesome!” she said. Mr Bennett organised this fantastic event for our school and as it was Sports Relief, we tried to keep everything on a sporty theme. “The children loved the day and as well as enjoying all the activities they probably went home a little fitter!” At Stephen’s we are used to raising money for charities. Each year we organise fundraisers and take part in events like Comic Relief. It feels good to be doing something as a school and it is nice to know that you are raising your own little bit for charity. Children are divided into four houses: yellow, blue, green and red. Each house has its own charities that they raise money for.
Our History topic in Year One this half term is 'Homes From The Past'. At Orleans, we believe in providing children with an enriched curriculum to enhance learning. During Victorian Day, children and teachers dressed in Victorian clothes and handled authentic Victorian household objects (courtesy of Chertsey Museum and members of the local community). They experienced first hand, what it would be like to be a school child during this time, excluding corporal punishment of course! Here are what the children remember in their own words.

All the more reason to stop, take 5 and enjoy what’s going on around you. Birds and insects busy on the wing, first fruits developing on that Apple tree given as a gift, sounds of rustling foliage and the intense odours from herbs which peek in the warm dry air of summer, are to be enjoyed!

Yellow isn’t everyone’s favourite but there’s no denying it’s an attention grabber! Laburnum x watereri 'Vossii' or ‘The Golden Rain Tree’ can be seen in many local gardens. St Margarets’ folk are a group of Wisteria (opposite) lovers, it’s official! See and smell the many different cultivars residents are growing in flower now.

Kids In the Garden There are so many fun ways to get your children to engage with the outdoors and gain an understanding of nature.
Making a Wormery WHAT YOU WILL NEED: • A large clean glass jar • Moist Soil • Dark Paper
A wormery is a temporary home for earthworms and creating one with your children is a fantastic way to let your kids get a ‘hands on’ approach to learning about how worms turn plant waste into soil.
• Sand • Vegetable Peelings or over-ripe fruit such as grapes • Earthworms

Put a layer of sand in the bottom of the glass war (about 1cm deep)

Now you need to find your worms… If it has rained you will find them near the surface of the soil if you dig down but if it has been dry then pour some water onto the soil and wait half an hour or so for them to come up to the surface.
Then put a thicker layer of moist soil on top of the sand (about 2cm deep) Next put a further thin layer of sand and a thicker layer of soil, ensuring that there is still about 5cm of space to the top of the jar.

Introduce them to your jar and then add the vegetable peelings or fruit. Put the lid on having made a few small holes in it. Cover the jar with the dark paper – you could secure it with sellotape or an elastic band - and put it in a cool dark cupboard.
You can then observe the wormery for a couple of weeks before releasing the worms back to the garden. Ensure the wormery doesn’t dry out during this time by adding a little water to the jar if necessary. by Anita Parker-Elms

ALFRESCO DINING ...A BUTCHERS PERSPECTIVE! Darren Armstrong, of Armstrong's Butchers says 'over the last ten years barbecue cooking has evolved and become more popular in this country. Today people not only enjoy barbecuing for the fun they also look for fresh produce and quality food. We now know that everything cooked on a barbecue does not have to come out looking like charcoal, the flavours an open flame brings can deliver healthy and delicious results’.
Armstrong's report an ever-increasing demand during the hotter, summer months, especially for marinated meats catering specifically for the barbecuing customer. Marinating meat not only adds more dimension to flavour but also tenderises and increases succulence, and new recipes are always being developed. Darren says 'we are creating and developing new recipes for the barbecue season all the time. We now have 15 different flavours of sausage all hand made on the premises and of course burgers, ribs, steaks and chops. Minty lamb chops are a great seller, we hand make our own lamb koftas, a seasoned minced lamb sausage on a stick covered in a crispy lime and chilli coating and they are very popular. Chicken thighs are best for the barbecue as the darker meat stays really moist and flavoursome and we recommend an excellent marinade recipe using garlic, olive oil and chopped herbs.'
Mix in a bowl with a handful of fresh breadcrumbs, one finely chopped onion, a handful of finely chopped parsley, a squeeze of tomato puree and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly. For those who like it hot and spicy, add a chopped chilli or a couple of cloves of garlic, or a pinch of paprika or cumin, anything that takes your creative fancy. Mould the mixture into four even size balls, and then squash them into burger patties. Cook for five or six minutes each side. Another good idea is to push a 50p size piece of Stilton cheese from yellowwedge (6 Crown Rd) into the middle of the burger before cooking to add a blue cheese twist! For a versatile marinade recipe try…. 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1/4 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup white wine vinegar, 3 tablespoons of English honey, 4 cloves crushed garlic, 1 teaspoon cayenne and 1 teaspoon ground black pepper. ...and may we recommend the perfect wine for your Al fresco dining or BBQ event: Quinta Da Aveleda, Vinho Verde, Portugal 2008.
Here are some great ideas for the barbecue season: HOMEMADE BURGERS. Make your own burgers to suit your own taste. Get the kids involved, they love getting their hands stuck in and it puts fun into cooking. Use 400g good quality minced steak to make four decent sized burgers.
This wonderful white wine is the perfect alternative to those bland, boring Pinot Grigio’s that usually get wheeled out when the sun arrives. Clean, fruity and mouth-wateringly refreshing with enough fruit to stand up to some grilled chicken or salmon. rmstrong’s butchers are a small, family-run local business. Robert Armstrong opened his first shop back in 1979 on the Lower Mortlake Road in Richmond. Along with his wife Sally and their sons Darren and Dean they opened a second shop in St.Margarets in 2007, bucking the trend for smaller businesses failing against the might of big business superstores. Asked why he believes his business has managed to survive and even flourish whilst many other similar businesses have gone under, Robert, or Bob as he is more widely known, explains, ‘as much as supermarkets have a place in modern society we feel that we, too, can compete. We offer high class produce, personal, helpful and friendly service as well as knowledge and advice. In our opinion the supermarkets can’t compete with the quality we offer. We are a small business, we virtually handpick our products because we are not buying on anywhere near the scale the supermarkets are, plus we have one-on-one interaction with our customers. We feel this is the great advantage of We offer high class produce, personal, helpful and having small local shops.’ When Bob opened his friendly service as well as knowledge and advice butchers there were over 20 butchers shops in the local area. Now only a handful survive. Bob himself says, ‘there were two butchers on the same parade of shops when we opened. Believe it or not there were three in St.Margarets! Unfortunately the rise of the supermarkets picked most of them off one by one. This is not to mention the greengrocers, the bakers, the fishmongers. These shops are a rare commodity these days. Thankfully we believe that many people still like to see these shops surviving. This was why we were so keen to open the shop in St.Margarets. There is a great community spirit and a real village feel which is fantastic in this day and age. We knew that Mr Frisby (the previous owner) was highly regarded and that the people of St.Margarets still valued having a local butchers, and we were extremely happy to take over. I think , and hope, that as long as we keep our standards up people will continue to support us. We think it’s great that St.Margarets is looking so vibrant, with shops like Yellowwedge Cheese, Streets greengrocers, Zorans Delicatessen and Sunshine and Ravioli coffee shop. ANTIQUES harles Wiltshire, better known as Chas, is a local antiques dealer and former shop owner in Crown Road. He now focuses his attention on probate and valuations, speciality areas of the trade. Chas has agreed to become the My St Margarets Magazines resident antiques columnist and through his column he will share his accrued knowledge, tips of the trade and invaluable insight into 'what's hot and what's not in the world of antiques.

Recently I have found that small pieces of silverware such as novelty pin cushions from the
Edwardian era is an area in antiques in which highly collectable novelty items are increasing in value rapidly. The more commonly collectable are in the form of small birds and animals such as pigs and elephants with the more sought after and valuable pincushions being those of camels, penguins and swans. Even more valuable and desirable are novelty silver Edwardian pincushions that take the form of miniature pieces of furniture. So check your sewing basket to see if you have a more unusual pincushion that might be worth more than you had realized. Up and coming in value are British war medals, Especially campaign and gallantry medals from the Victorian period. Medals from the turn of the century are particularly collectable and an added dimension and interest is that their individual history can easily be researched at the public records office at Kew. Leaping up in price are Victoria Cross medals, which have increased in value five fold over the last five years. Gallantry medals in the last two years have more than doubled in value. Medals from the first world war issued posthumously to soldiers killed in action and that also have the soldier's death plaque will have the value increased by fifty percent. Of course no monetary value would ever replace the sentimental value of such cherished medals of those soldiers and loved ones who gave their lives in war. For these reasons, should you have medals of this kind make sure they are kept safe and that you have photographic evidence as proof of ownership. I also recommend that you insure your items adequately and do remember to keep documentation and proof of ownership separate from the items.
My final tip is, if you're thinking of selling your old gold and we've all seen the ads promoting selling gold claiming how easy it is to turn unwanted gold into cash. Gold coins are at their highest value for twenty years with sovereigns, classed as bullion, now at their peak. I strongly recommend that you shop around before you sell your gold items to any one company. Ensure that you ask for current rates, ask how much they pay per gram for 9, 14, 18 and 22 carat gold, compare prices before you part with your property, you could be amazed at the varying rates on offer.

We tracked down the stars of the video to find out why they adore to tango… Passionate advocates of the tango, Tom and Tammy, have been studying and dancing the tango - both in London and Buenos Aires for about ten years. The thinking behind the video: a dance along the pavement on a surprisingly busy Sunday morning in St Margarets was not intended to be a display of the best that tango has to offer - but hopefully it captured some of the sheer joy of moving to beautiful music with your partner in your arms.

Researchers have found an active mum can clock up to 14 miles a week. "Who would think that a daily walk with a pushchair would add up to so many miles in the first year of a baby's life,” said parenting consultant Liz Day who polled 2,000 women. “It's important for new mums to leave the house and enjoy some fresh air whilst having the opportunity to meet new friends and bond with their baby." All this buggy pushing has meant that 52% of the women researched claimed to have lost an average of 9lbs just one month after giving birth. Local resident Paul O’Reilly reports on his mammoth cycle ride for charity...
“To enable homeless people to access accommodation, and those at risk of homelessness to maintain their accommodation. To support all our service users to the point that they no longer need us.” SPEAR is the only charity within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames working with every aspect of homelessness and was founded in 1986 after two people froze to death rough sleeping by the river Thames. No one has died on the streets of Richmond since and we are proud of the fact that we now offer so much more to those who need us most. The philosophy at SPEAR has always been to work with people until they no longer need us. We give them the skills and the confidence they need to live a fulfilling live in their own home. I would like to thank the St Margaret’s Traders association for their kind donation to support the Dallaglio Grand Slam and my charity DebRA You may have seen some coverage of Lawrence’s amazing cycle ride. Lawrence and the core team cycled 2800KM covering the Six Nations stadiums starting at Rome, through Paris, Twickenham, Cardiff, Dublin and ending at Murrayfield. Amazingly the foundation has now raised its target of £1 million for Sport Relief in support of a number of charities including Cancer Research, help for Heroes, RPA benevolent, Leukaemia research and DebRA. I had the incredible experience of joining Lawrence and the team from Twickenham to Cardiff, some 280KM with some 40 riders. This was a very humbling experience, irrespective of the sportsmen, celebrities and business executives the ‘togetherness’ in everyone supporting each other, there are some incredible highs and some lows on this type of challenge. The overwhelming feeling is pride…….working hard to meet your personal challenge and raising funds for these worthy charities.

DebRA is a lesser know charity which provides services and support to children and families who suffer from EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa), at the same time as coordinating and providing funds for the research (all over the world) to find treatments and ultimately a cure. EB Research has had some major breakthroughs in recent years, and it is now at a point where for some types of EB, it is moving from laboratory work to clinical trials – at last for some of those affected by EB we are just starting to see the benefits of 15 years of hard work in the labs. But clinical research is very expensive - several times more expensive than lab research; services still need to be provided while we wait for the day DebRA can close up shop! And all this has come at a time when funding has become more of a challenge….hence all the support we can provide is greatly appreciated. n a Spring evening in 1977 shortly after the Queen’s Jubilee, over a drink at the Turks Head pub, a group of friends had the idea of creating an event on the nearby Moormead recreation ground which would provide a grand party for the local community and at the same time raise money to treat local more senior citizens to a Christmas meal. Volunteers came forward to run a coconut shy and children’s games, stallholders were recruited and tents booked to house kegs of beer, tea and home made cakes. A friendly fairground operator brought a helter skelter, a stage was ordered on which short plays could be performed and on which a local band could play. And so thirty-three years ago the St Margarets Fair was born.

Over the years the Fair may have got bigger, but its ethos has remained much the same – to be a really good community day out for the whole of St Margarets. These days all the profits are split between our four local schools and charities that serve the local area. This year’s Fair will be on Saturday the 10th of July and as always we will be indebted to parents from the schools, the St Margarets and Turks Head pubs, the Rugby Football Union and many more for their help and support. But above all the biggest thanks have to go to the thousands of St Margarets residents who regularly come to Moormead every July to support, our largest annual community event.
Is this the strangest sight ever seen in St Margarets? Lynn Faulds Wood, the former BBC Watchdog presenter who set up Lynn’s Bowel Cancer Campaign at 39 Crown Road, was invited to Slovenia to launch their colon cancer screening campaign a couple of years ago. While she was in the capital Llubljana, she heard about a company who could make a giant inflatable shaped like a colon. But where to test this giant object? St Margarets Tavern manager John Collins came to the rescue by offering the pub car park and, in a matter of seconds, the Colon was full size, shining in the spring sunshine. Over the last few weeks, it’s been a very busy Colon – appearing first on GMTV to help raise awareness of this common cancer (the second biggest cancer killer in this country) and to launch the charity’s campaign to get people using free screening kits sent out by the NHS. The Giant Colon then travelled to Brussels where it was the centre of attraction in the European Parliament at the launch of the European Colon Cancer Campaign, coordinated from the charity’s St Margarets office. Soon it will be appearing in the Westminster Parliament as Lynn and her volunteers have been offered an exhibition to raise awareness of bowel cancer among MPs and members of the House of Lords.

Walk with us... Lynn’s Bowel Cancer Campaign manager Siobhan Crowther is busy organising the charity’s third annual Live Longer Walk in Hyde Park from 10.30am on September 19. The walk attracts 500 people a year “including many families from St Margarets,” says Siobhan. “We have a treasure trail for the children, a fancy dress prize for the spottiest outfit – and this year we want runners as well as walkers. REALISATION OF THE DREAM Georgie runs her desert At around 2pm on Saturday 10th April 2010 Georgie completed her dream of 15 years; she crossed the finishing line of the Marathon des Sables. Described as the toughest foot race in the world - 265km across the Sahara in six days, in blistering heat of 47C - Georgie not only made it, she did it in style, placed 279th out of 1,000 runners and among the top 30 women, a truly amazing feat. Georgie’s challenge started on Easter Sunday. While the rest of us were tucking into our hot cross buns Georgie was shouldering her 8.5kgs rucksack with all her kit in it including food and bedding for the week and setting off on the gruelling trek. When Georgie called home on Tuesday evening she had just completed her third stage today - very hot (47 degrees!), her feet were a bit of a mess, but she said she was in good form. After day 3, she was in 375th place. However, the big stage was Wednesday (c50 miles). From Georgies diary “Today was so hard! Another 50 have dropped out as it was about 47 degrees and we had to walk through several flat plains which were so hard and hot. I have never been in heat like this. Yesterday there were mountains which were great because you could go at such a steady pace and it was slightly cooler. I actually ended up walking most of it apart from the first section. It was hard when it became dark and we had to use our torches.

You could see a long line of people moving across the sands; we finally came in just before 2am. I have not been up this late for ages! My feet were in bits! So the rest day was great. Today was just a marathon and I felt good and finished well. Only a half marathon to go!” Georgie would like to thank everyone for the emails, and all the tremendous support she has received. Georgie is raising funds to support the St Margaret’s for F.R.O.D.O campaign to send a team of doctors from the UK to provide medical treatment to disabled children in Romania. Her target is £5,000 and she is almost there and so deserves to make it. Men can you see red? 1 in 12 men is colour blind. It can run in families. So can bowel cancer First some reassurance – although bowel cancer is very common, most people with symptoms – 90% of people who develop bowel cancer are over 55. Men are more affected than women, at an earlier age and probably with more cancers which might have bleeding as a symptom or sign. Colour blindness is also common, affecting 1 in 12 men. It tends to run in families. Far fewer women are affected. Men who are colour blind usually cannot see red, which can make it difficult to spot bleeding from the bottom. The colours red, green and brown can look the same to them. So what should colour blind people do? • Find out about cancers in your family, especially bowel cancer • Report any family history to your GP & for serious histories perhaps see a genetic counsellor. • Act on persistent bowel symptoms and ask your GP about hidden blood tests • If invited to take a poo test by the NHS screening programme, do it! What you should look out for – symptoms • Recent changes in bowel habits – going to the loo more often than normal for you or trying to go with not much happening – persisting for 4 weeks • Looser, more diarrhoea like stools for 4 weeks • Rectal bleeding which comes and goes especially with a change in bowel habit – colour blind people may not see bleeding from the bottom but might spot stools “looking different” • Anaemia found by GP perhaps because of extreme tiredness – men with anaemia should be investigated to exclude bowel cancer, women after the menopause Lynn’s Bowel Cancer Campaign 39 Crown Road, St Margarets, Twickenham TW1 3EJ www.bowelcancer.tv
