Welcome to issue 31 November 2013

s we now head towards Winter & the darkest months of the year here in the northern hemisphere, those in the southern about to enjoy the heat of the Sun & it’s return, it is always time for celebration. I love the colours and special astral light Autumn brings us before finally leaving us with the memories of summer then abandoning us within the dark womb of winter to be nurtured by the Crone, teaching us the inner wisdoms, to reflect, to change, to see the darkness as a waiting time, a symbolic death, to be reborn when the Sun returns bounding with new energy, a new adventure. As always my way is one of continuing celebration as that is exactly what this life is intended to be. We have planned many rituals & parties to maintain the energies over the long winter months with large amounts of our homemade wine & the wonderful aroma of our Sage smudge sticks…. large amounts of homemade beer laced bread & cakes. But wherever you live in this great global village make sure you celebrate each day, savour each and every moment as you travel this magikal pathway we call life.

Muse, meanderings & wanderings Conversations with Mother Earth regarding Merlin.

I dwell within all that exists, all that ever was or will ever be, even that which is beyond comprehension of the human mind. I am known as Merlin an archetype of the old path.. mystikal energy…a way of life….I live in the trees of the wild woods, in the dark soil beneath the roots awaiting the time to awaken & return….that time nears.

Listen to the wind, the creaking of the trees branches, the call of the crow, the silence of the clouds above your heads as my voice whispers gently talking of things to come, the return of the Dragon that represents the magikal fire power which has for far too long been imprisoned. Listen for the voice that will lead you back to freedom.

Project Avalon Update

P

roject Avalon is a task I have set myself with the help of some of my ritual group to turn my old courtyard into a haven of Organic Herbs, vegetables, fruit & flowers grown on the Moon & Sun cycles, meditation & mantra. See also previous issues of the magazine. After many years of waiting we have at last here in England a real & proper hot sunny summer which is helping all the plants catch up after such a horrible & prolonged winter. My new grapevine is really charging along now (Merlot grape style) & has grown at least three feet in as many weeks. The Blackberries are actually turning black and ripening (made three gallons from it last year so I am hoping it will at least yield the same amount this year) we have two gallons of Elderflower brewing at the moment, so stocks are building. The tri colour Sage has flowered & I have started to pick them ready to dry to produce some rather gorgeous smudge sticks (good for cleansing & protection) I experimented with the Eau-de-cologne Mint by infusing and making some very refreshing tea (can be drunk hot with a drop of honey or iced) and

found it really tasty, also good for the digestive system. The Catnip Mint I have had to put in a hanging basket and hang high on a wall as not only my cat but every cat in the area decided to attack it. The really funny part is watching my cat sitting under it looking as though he is praying it will fall off the wall.

project

Avalon

I am continuing to spend some time every night performing a ritual, playing some meditation music and chanting mantra with the plants… it certainly is boosting the energies & at the same time changing my perception about the consciousness of plants….they are certainly giving me plenty of power/healing….it has now become very much part of my life in all aspects. I do hope that this project does encourage others to try something similar as the benefits are more than worth it and certainly not a chore….being in tune with the cycles of nature and mother earth, the sun &moon energies brings peace…harmony…wellbeing which in turn is pure Magik.

We are the Gods Part five

Buried deep down within the dark recess of our sub conscious, supressed by many millennia of control by society & religion lays a dormant knowing….a knowledge built into our consciousness that can understand & comprehend all things of the Universe. If can be likened it to a light switch just needing to be re found.

realise these innate powers within us all. Previously I discussed how we must firstly clear our minds of all the rubbish & fears that have been indoctrinated in us and the childlike belief that there is a far greater being controlling us & the Universe. Then once we start to achieve this we can begin our quest to find the divine within.

This knowledge has been repressed & then over many millennia forgotten. (almost) History as we know it will gradually have to be re written as more & more truths are revealed, discovering that some of the original teachings are completely false.

Another secret the Mystiks know & understand is sound, harmonics, music. Yet another clue is at the start of the ancient text in the Bible. “In the beginning was the Word “This is something the original religious fanatics did not fully understand themselves as they stole the text from the ancient Kabbalistic mystiks anyway.

Part five.

We all know very well that music & a beautiful voice can bring the most insensitive of beasts and humans to tears, love, joy, sadness or despair. The intonation of the correct note creates vibrations/waves in the etheric atmosphere which reaches out having an effect on all it comes into contact with to a greater or lesser degree. Firstly as I have already stated it must therefore begin with the correct thought & then applied to the correct sound. A prime example would be what the Doctors of old would call a bedside manner, where they would use the tone of voice applicable to the needs of their patient,

Over the last few issues I talked of several reasons for this bold statement & now will give further reasons and practises that will expand this. The clues are there in abundance, even Jesus in the Christian Bible makes the bold statement “ As I do so ye do also but even greater “ he was one of the few who tried to tell everyone this secret so they made him a God, crucified him & shut him up….can’t have everybody knowing the truth can we. Which brings me back to the ways we can

sadly an art lost long ago. What I am attempting to convey here is spending some time on the correct procedure by running through your mind the very thing you wish to accomplish then picturing it as if you were watching a movie & seeing it exactly as you want it to be. Beware of trying to influence other people for your own benefit against their will as it will return to bite you. The Universal law is always “Do what thou will as long as it harm none “Be sides a divine being would not contemplate such a deed. The correct procedure in such matters is to see only the higher good within the person, projecting light to their being whilst seeing the beauty within their features, not dwelling on any negative aspects. Speak gently & purposely, slowly rounding your words clearly and only speaking the truth with not even the slightest of untruth as their higher consciousness will detect that causing them to block and back away from you. When you adhere to this format they will open up, trust you on a higher level thus imparting the information you need.

& situations never entertain any negative thoughts then the Universe will begin to respond to you as the Divine being you really are. Next issue I will go into further detail of clearing the mind, one pointed thought & more ways of control of sound, your voice….the power in your name and how to use that power. Not enough attention is paid to how we talk pronounce our words & the tone level as this is very important in claiming your power.

There is no part of me that is not of the Gods even though I be clothed with a body of flesh. I stand upon the Universe & without Me the Universe is Not. (from the ancient texts of the Magus)

MystikMaster

So spend some time clearing the past clutter from your mind to be able to think clearly, practise thinking & picturing clearly….spend time learning to talk gently, softly always conveying only the truth. Spend time seeing only the higher qualities within all peoples

The Way of the Web - a Preview

by James Middleditch

“The laptop, mobile phone, wireless connection and social networks are just the latest tools to be employed in the ancient urge to increase our connection to our fellow humans and animals, plants and trees, mountains and streams, earth and sky.” from Essays in Contemporary Paganism

I

n December, The Mystik Way will experience something very special. For the first time, its story will be told in print. An essay about it will appear in a book called Essays in Contemporary Paganism, edited by Trevor Greenfield and published by Moon Books. This essay will go right back to the roots and origins of The Mystik Way, which began life as a Facebook group in February 2011, and quickly grew way beyond the dreams of those who established it. By the end of that year, it had 900 members, and a monthly magazine, compiling articles from its members, was just a few Issues old. Another year later, and the group had been joined by a Page, with a combined total of just over 4000 participants, with the Magazine, an Issue of which you are of course now reading available on many online media platforms. On this, the day of writing, that number of participants has grown to just on 11,000. These numbers are staggering, and demonstrate the potential and possibilities of groups such as this.

The essay is therefore called The Way of the Web. Inspired by the spiritual novel The Way of Wyrd, which explores the interconnectedness of all life, and playing on the obvious but often forgotten symbol of the internet as a spider’s web, the title reflects the importance of technology to the new forms of spiritualism that are growing here in the second decade of the new millennium. 8 |

MYSTIK WAY MAGAZINE

It argues that while traditional views place technology in opposition to nature, the internet and social networking can instead be used to enhance our relationship to nature, by allowing us to share our visions through photographs, all around the world, and draw upon the energies of places that our own eyes may never see in ‘reality’. It also explores the nature of the Healing Link, which makes the best use of the ‘web’ concept – that we can all link together with our intentions, focus our energy, and send that energy, invisible yet potent, to where it is needed; this could be a person who requires some form of healing, a country that is suffering from war, disaster or tragedy, or indeed the planet as a whole, our own Mother Earth. It can be easy to forget how magical these things are, especially when we see them every day. But The Mystik Way is in its own way a miracle – a fusion of technology, which has evolved to bring us to this point, and spiritual energy, channelled by the dedication of those who maintain and produce both the group and this very Magazine. As another successful year ends, and the potential of this Mystik Way reaches into exciting new possibilities, it feels like the right time for its story to be put down in words. Back in the mid-20th century, the great spiritualist and Avalonian Wellesley Tudor Pole told us to record and write about our spiritual developments, so that future generations can learn from them. There is something potent and permanent about bold black typeset letters on fresh white paper. The Mystik Way is taking that step, from cyberspace into real space, etching its presence onto the real world and making its mark on time as we roll forward into our shared future. Stay with us for the journey, as we continue to grow with new thoughts and ideas. Together, we can be amazing.

REVIEWS & ENDORSEMENTS

A Moon Books anthology of Pagan writers considering a range of different contemporary issues.

Absolutely fascinating book, bringing together the personal thoughts and experiences of a hugely diverse group of people and their own thoughts and views on Contemporary Paganism, so many different ideas but all with a thread of commonality running through, an extremely interesting read. ~ Rachel Patterson, Author, Grimoire of a Kitchen WitchThis thought-provoking, eclectic collection of essays from Pagan writers across the globe not only gives an insight into the divergent Paganisms in various parts of the world, it also reminds us of what we - as Pagans - hold in common. ~ Fiona Tinker, Depute Presiding Officer, The Scottish Pagan Federation. This anthology is like a bottle of mead and a cozy conversation with a dozen pagans round a bonfire at a summer festival, without any of the insect bites and inclement weather. I recommend it to all who want to see how we fit in to the big picture of neo-paganism around the world. It is a big YES to the question, can’t we all just get along. Well done. ~ Dorothy Abrams, Author, Identity and the Quartered Circle

Paperback ÂŁ9.99 || $16.95Dec 13, 2013. 978-1-78279278-9.Available from Amazon, and at http://www.moonbooks.net/books/essays-contemporary-paganism[http:// www.moon-books.net/books/essays-contemporarypaganism] In this absorbing anthology twelve Pagan writers from across the globe offer a unique perspective on Paganism today in both its theoretical and practical aspects. Each writer began with a blank canvas, other than their essay must reflect a contemporary theme. In turn the essays are philosophical, practical, personal and reflective, with issues ranging from parenting to polytheism, from being a Pagan in London to the sacred landscapes of Australia, from mysticism to the World Wide Web. In their breadth these essays reflect a concern with living in a modern world, with modern technology and with understanding oneself within a tradition that is evolving and adapting to meet the needs of its adherents whilst staying true to its fundamental principles.

THE MAGICIAN AND THE PRACTICE OF MAGIC

by Richard Hayes (Warlockway)

Through the practice of rituals and spiritual exercises, the Magician endeavours to gain control of his life, including his spirituality and his relationship to the physical world. The path of spiritual development pursued by the Magician, leads to him becoming the Magus – the Wise Spiritual Teacher, who uses his magical skills to develop his own spirituality, and then decides to dedicate his life to the service of humanity. Aleister Crowley defined Magic as the power to bring about change in accordance with will. Dion Fortune amended this definition to - Magic as the power to bring about change in consciousness, resulting in change in the material world. The use of magical power to change circumstances in the physical world is called Low Magic, and the Magician uses spells, invocations to the Gods and his own personal magical power to bring about change in accordance with his will. Magical work that is carried out to enhance the spiritual consciousness of the Magician is called High Magic (Theorgy), and the Magician carries out rituals and spiritual exercises to enhance his magical power and to expand his magical intellect in order that he can become a channel for the higher spiritual forces, bringing enlightenment to humanity.

of the Magician, and provides a ring of protection within which magical work can be carried out, and it also contains magical power. Additional protection is also provided by setting up protection at each of the Four Quarters, using the imagination of the Magician to form Astral Images of either the Four Archangels (Raphael, Michael, Gabriel and Auriel) in Ceremonial Magic, or in Natural Magic by setting up the protection of the Four Watchtowers by invoking the Four Elements of Air, Fire, Water and Earth in each quarter. The circle is then blessed with water at each quarter using the chalice, and then consecrated in the same way using smoke from the incense burner. Once the circle has been created, consecrated and protection established, the Magician dismisses from the circle anything negative, and invokes the presence of the God-form which is being celebrated.

In the case of Ceremonial Magic, they can be any of the Gods or Goddesses from one of the many traditional pantheons, or in the case of Natural Magic – the Great Mother Goddess or the Lord and Lady of Modern Witchcraft. In High Magic, the higher self of the Magician can be invocated as the source of inspiration, as some magicians don’t wish to work with traditional God-forms, but rather All magic is carried out in a sacred with the power within themselves. space, which is created by casting a Magical Once the circle has been cast, protected Circle. and consecrated, and spiritual power requested, the Magican can then carry out his magical workings. In Low Magic, this normally takes the form of rituals and spells, establishing the desire of the Magician in some symbolic, poetic or graphic form, which enables the Magician to concentrate their magical will on the issue in hand. They can then project that wish onto the Astral Plane with as much power as they can generate, or they can request the assistance of a God or Goddess who they have previously invited into the circle to grant their wishes. In Low Magic, the magical working (eg. Spell) is empowered using emotional energy, whereas in High Magic, mental energy and the intellect is used to focus magical power, which is then used to expand the consciousness of the Magician, and to make links with higher spiritual beings (eg. Angels, Archangels etc). Such contacts can then be used to request assistance with issues affecting the Magician.

Magic). Magic is considered good or bad (white or black) depending on the motivation of the practitioner. The process of magic is the same in both cases, and magical power is itself ethically neutral.

Whichever form of magic is used, its success depends on the power of the Magician to visualize the forces involved and to be able to concentrate forcefully on the issue in hand, prior to releasing that request to the Cosmos. The Motto of Magic is ‘To Know, To Dare, To Will and then To Be Silent’. First – the Magician must have magical knowledge, and then the confidence to practice magic. They must have great powers of concentration to project their will, and finally, once the request has been released – it is wise to remain silent, not discussing it with anyone nor thinking about it, until the desired affect has been achieved. Discussion and deliberation after the rite will only decimate its power.

The Magician, using his own magical power and powers of visualization, creates a crucible of ideas and images which are projected onto the Astral Plane, and into which magical power flows down from the Gods, Angels, Archangels, Elementals and many other Spiritual Beings. The greater the power generated by the Magician, the greater the flow of magical power from the Cosmos, and the more successful will be the magical working, whether it be for physical change or for enlightenment.

A good example of High and Low Magic can be seen in Alchemy, where at the mundane level (Low Magic) the Alchemist attempts to turn base matter into gold, but in the process transforms his own spiritual consciousness to achieve enlightenment (High 12 | MYSTIK WAY MAGAZINE

Magic is a practical skill which is enhanced by regular practice. The Magician, as part of their development, carries out exercises to develop their creative imagination and their ability to concentrate on a particular issue for some time without being distracted. The creation of the power of the will is the essence of magic, for it is required in all magical workings, to concentrate magical power and direct it in the direction required. Likewise, the power to visualize is essential in the casting of the circle, setting up protection and invoking the God forms and Archangels, visions of whom are built up in the imagination of the Magician, and become real on the Astral Plane, and act as channels for magical power.

The advice to the aspiring Magician is to start simply, practice casting the circle, and then stand in the centre – invoking Divine power into yourself and your circle, and then make your request for assistance in the form of a spell, simply and clearly stated. Send that thought out from your circle, along with the power you have generated. Give thanks for the acceptance of your request, dismiss the powers invoked and close the circle, returning any excess power back to the earth.

As you expand your knowledge of magic, you can start using magical tools, light candles, create an altar and put on it images of the deities you wish to contact. You can also visualize many different God forms and astral energies, and work affectively with the hidden kingdoms of nature. Magic is an adventure of self-discovery, and the powers that you generate will be reflected in your own self esteem, making you more confident, having greater control over your life, and this will also enhance your spiritual understanding. DESCRIPTION OF THE PICTURE In the picture which I have painted to accompany this article, I have painted the Magician of the Tarot in the form of the World card. Whereas the Fool is the beginner in Magic, setting out on his magical adventure, the Magician is the Magus – the Wise Practitioner who has learnt all the spiritual lessons that Magic can teach. The World card represents the completion of the spiritual journey, when all the lessons contained in the Major Arcana of the Tarot have been experienced and integrated into the persona of the Magician, who has now become the Adept.

depicted the Cherubim who protect the Gates of Paradise (the Spirit Realm), and which are Angelic forms used for protection in Magic. The other background colours are those used in the Golden Dawn system, as an alternative for the colours of the Elements. The Magician is surrounded by his Magical Tools, which symbolize the four elements – Wand (fire), Chalice (water), Sword or Dagger (air), and the Pentacle (earth). The element of Ether (spirit) is represented by the candle flame at the base of the picture, which represents the spirit of the Magician which comes alive as they open themselves up to spiritual development. The Dancing Hermaphrodite of the traditional World card has now been replaced by the perfected Human Being in the form of the Magician (Magus), who has now balanced physical existence with spiritual awareness to become the enlightened Adept.

The centre of the card, which is surrounded by the laurel wreath of success, and the Oraborous – the snake swallowing its tail as the symbol of spiritual completion, contains the Magician clothed in the gold robe of the Alchemist, who is portrayed against a background of Night and Day to represent the powers of polarity that are a natural part of Magic, and over which the Magician has gained complete control. Around the central oval – representing Spirit (the element of Ether), are situated the Four Quarters representing the elements of Fire (red), Water (blue), Air (yellow) and Earth (green). In these Four Quarters are 13

As a Spiritualist Medium, I channel inspired writings dictated to me from the Spirit World, usually in the form of Spiritual Guidance. I hope that you find this one helpful to you!

Progress Progress in life happens when effort has been made to achieve something, to look ahead, to work hard and thus to reach your goal. This can be in the mundane things of your life such as home decorating or learning to cook, or by studying a subject formally or informally to enhance your knowledge and experience so that you can use that knowledge to further your progress in life or to enhance it. As spiritual beings experiencing a physical life on earth, progress can be achieved in understanding more of the spiritual aspect of your life. This may be through study or reading, or listening to a philosophy of life which expands your thinking. You may have opportunities to learn how communication between spirit to spirit can take place, here on earth and between the two worlds, by observing others being the medium by which this communication can

be passed on. Having accepted that life continues after physical death, you may feel that the whole of your earthly life is an opportunity to progress spiritually. Thus you may wish to be the channel for the love and light which comes to bring healing, communication between the two worlds and upliftment of the soul. Progress can be made by opening up your awareness to the spirit world, perhaps by sitting in a group or circle to encourage this safely, learning how to make links with your loved ones yourself. What joy is waiting for you, to know they are near, supporting and guiding your earthly life, being only a thought away – waiting to be called upon! Be happy in your life, and be the channel for love and light into your world, sharing your knowledge and kindness with others – thus progressing your spiritual being.

Tarot Card of the Month The eight of Wands, Swiftness I always feel the minor arcana of the Tarot is never discussed or used enough, as unlike the major arcana is it more to do with the inner workings of our selves rather than the outer influences. They are essentially a tool to help us dig deep & find what the card drawn is attempting to make us see….to try and understand what is needed from within to move forward. The eight of Wands is exactly what it says Swiftness, Within the fiery wands are the arrowheads of the archer Sagittarios who fires his arrows with great deliberation & the power of the planet Mercury, which is the planet of Communication….the whole concept is one of clear & positive communication, electricity, fiery elements, action & expression. In this modern age of the mobile phone and the world wide web, we have very little excuse for ignorance or lack of communication, indeed when drawn this card is telling is to be more open, to speak & say our truth, to stop holding back & bottling up, speak and open up. How to others know how we feel if we do not say anything, Communication is also a great tool for learning, understanding & balance within all forms of relationships including the work place. Also there is a very strong message here to take action & set things into motion that you have been holding back for various reasons….So the key words here are openness in all communications, communicate more, take action pick up that phone, write that letter, send that email, talk openly to everyone and be open to their words also.

Spellbound A new spell binding novel by bestselling author & our very own witch Jennifer Adele “We always think we will have more time… and then it runs out…” Vera Norton is only a young girl when her ancient friend and neighbor, Lillian Thompson, dies, leaving her emotionally wounded and incredibly vulnerable. With little parental supervision and a brother who couldn’t be more opposite of her in every way, Vera is left reeling and spending a lot of time with the one permanent figure in her life, a large oak tree at the center of the Thompson gardens, a tree that is at the epicenter of Vera’s world. However, when Lillian’s strange sister, Elizabeth, moves into the Thompson house next door and takes over the property, the curious and horrific really take hold. This then catapults Vera into an adult life of magic and mystery, love and dangerous obsession, ghostly encounters and supernatural apparitions, curses and spells. Can Vera reclaim the life she knew and the tree she loved, an odd tree that is central to her existence? Can Vera override a Fate that stalks her and stares at her with red ember eyes, a Fate that seems determined to destroy her? Can a curse be broken and age-old spells unbound?...

The Mystik Way has nothing but praise for this spellbinding read, it’s a cannot put down book full of twists & turns, scary on the edge of your seat stuff. Beautifully written, so much so it actually places you right there in the story. Highly recommended if you love suspense that has a great plot. MystikMaster

These warped beliefs that we hold deep within us are grounded in fear, ego, judgement and drama and can be the undoing of all that is good and positive in our lives through self-sabotage. Yet, all of these denied aspects of us could be our greatest assets once we embrace them and see their gifts.

We are every-thing – all the good and all the bad. If we are created in God’s/Source’s all encompassing image, then we too are every-thing (including every emotion and all the good and all the bad) We know that God/Source can create and if we are every-thing in God/Source’s likeness, then we are also creators and can co-create with the universe/God/Source to attract what we want and live our lives to the full. We need to understand and accept that we have the ability to experience the full spectrum of every emotion and personality trait and it is sometimes appropriate to use our harder aspects to establish boundaries. Yet, when we try and hide these aspects of ourselves from others, it is exactly what we project. When we stop judging ourselves, we stop judging others until we become non judgemental, calm, accepting of life, establish appropriate boundaries and live in adult/soul energy. This is known as self-mastery and allows us to live and let live without judgement or attachment and in unconditional love. That said, it is unrealistic to think that our buttons will never be pushed and we will be able to maintain soul energy all of the time, so the trick is to recognise when we have gone into fear/ego and to know that we have the choice of moving back into soul energy. For more info on fear and love energy, please refer to http:// www.spiritualquestjourneys.com/august-2013newsletter/ How our shadow sides develops When we are born, our souls and minds are pure, light and in unconditional love. We believe we are the centre of the universe (which we are) and all of our needs are considered and taken care of. Through the process of growing up, we are conditioned by society and develop belief systems that are clogged with messages from teachers, family, friends and the media telling us that we are not enough, not worthy, not the centre of the universe, that we don’t deserve and we start to believe that we are less than others and give our power away in order to fit in.

There is also a time in everyone’s life where we experience something – could be a big or small incident – that creates a belief that it not safe to be who we are. This is called the Original heartbreak and most of us are not even aware that we have experienced this emotion. In addition, our perception of events is often different to what we are told in our formative years. For example: Two adults are having an argument and their child reacts in fear by crying. The parents’ shout at the child to stop crying and that every-thing is fine. This confuses the child as their message is: disregard your intuition when something is wrong, trust us because we are adults and have power over you and don’t show your emotion by crying. If, as a teenager, you were told by some-one in perceived authority you were selfish – you may have assumed that a) you are a bad person and b) its wrong to act in this way as selfish is bad. You then try and hide this fact and go out of your way to be selfless and yet people continue to say you are selfish (because this is what you project). Once you accept that there are times when its appropriate to be selfish and you embrace this part of your shadow side (and you stop projecting it) Selfishness or selflessness no longer pushes your buttons. Remember that 90% of communication happens energetically and the clues on your shadow side issue will be the negative feedback you receive from others or the personality traits that you see in others that you dont like. For example: If you strongly dislike someone because you think they are insincere, ask yourself where in your life you are or have been insincere (there is a difference between just noticing a trait without judgement and allowing it to push your buttons so look for the strong judgements). This also works on the flipside – when you meet someone who you really admire – you are seeing in him or her, a quality that you also have and don’t accept about yourself. Integration comes with deep acceptance. Debbie Ford uses the analogy of trying to hold a beach ball under water. No matter how much you focus on keeping the ball under water, eventually it will pop up. It is the same with your shadow

23

– These repressed qualities and emotions continue to “pop up” in self-sabotaging ways until you shine the light on and integrate them. Once you accept and love them, you are able to see the gifts in them as part of your complete authentic being which releases their hold on you.

same pole and you can accept that there are times that both extremes can be acceptable, you can select where you want to be on that pole.

5. Once you have brought this aspect into the light by focusing on it and accepting it, you will find that you no longer judge an overbearing (or meek) person and simply accept that this is where they are currently on their pole of expressing personal power.

Overcoming shadow issues The spiritual law of polarity states that where one emotion or expression exists, the extreme opposite also exists e.g. loving and hateful; hard and soft; loud and quiet; hot and cold; cheerful and grumpy. The difference between things diametrically opposed to each other is only a matter of degree. So when you find one aspect, you will always find the potential for its opposite and the whole range in-between. Remember that we are everything, the good and the bad, and our experience of the emotion or aspect that is pushing our buttons is simply because our judgement on where one should be on that sliding scale is different to some-one’s expression of it. To illustrate the steps of recognising and integrating shadow issues, I have used the example of an overbearing person pushing your buttons. 1. Once you have identified the shadow issue as being overbearing, ask yourself where you have been overbearing in your life or even whom the qualities of being overbearing reminds you of (e.g you had an overbearing mother and you felt insignificant and powerless around her)

2. Once you have focused on the nature of being overbearing (or being with your overbearing mother) look for the opposite aspect. For overbearing, you might choose the words submissive or meek. 3. Think of various situations where it might be appropriate to be overbearing and when it might be appropriate to be submissive or meek. e.g it might be appropriate to be overbearing when dealing with a pesky salesman who wont take no for an answer and it might be appropriate to be meek or submissive during a armed robbery. 4. Once you realise that both overbearing and meek are on the different end of the

6. For deeper integration, there are many energetic processes one can do. A favourite of mine is to meet the shadow aspect of myself at a campfire and have a chat about what they are trying to show me. Once I fully understand their purpose, I forgive them and myself and take them into my heart.

If you are interested in understanding more about shadow work, I can highly recommend “The Dark side of the light chasers” by Debbie Ford. I first read this life-changing book over 15 years ago and still keep it close at hand. I am also running a special newsletter promotion on shadow work sessions (please see below) Let your dreams be bigger than your fears, your actions louder than your words and your faith stronger than your feelings.

Meditation in Action:

Understanding Walking Meditation

Written by Jennifer Adele

W

alking meditation is quite simply a form of meditation in action, and is something that I, personally, have been practicing for the past 17 years. It is a hyper-physical form of meditation that not only puts us in direct and balanced touch with the inner workings of our own minds, but also in deep communication with both the stillness and the rhythms of our own bodies. Walking meditation acts as the bridge that creates the wholeness of the body-mind, and it has had a profound and completely positive impact in my own life. In walking meditation, we use the experience of walking, instead of sitting stillness, as the focus. The movement becomes a non-verbal mantra and a whirling center of peace. This then allows us to become more mindful of our experience while walking; we do more than literally walk and we become more than the tangible quotients of who we seem to be externally. And, we learn to respond instead of merely react.

Obviously, there are some differences between walking meditation and sitting meditation, and that is a great place to start, descriptively. First 26 | MYSTIK WAY MAGAZINE

and foremost, we keep our eyes open during walking meditation, and that difference implies other changes in the way we do the practice. We are not withdrawing our attention from the outside world. On the contrary, we are holding in our awareness the existence of the shared reality of that world and then better grasping our own place in it. Wholeness of the bodymind merges with wholeness of the greater shared reality. We have to be aware of things outside of ourselves‌ and there are many other things that we will be more aware of than when we are doing sitting meditation‌ especially if we sit inside. These include the wind, the sun, the rain, the sounds of nature, and of humans and machines.

But one of the biggest differences perhaps is that walking meditation is easier, for most people. People often report feeling more easily and readily aware of their bodies while doing walking meditation, compared to sitting forms of practice. When your body is in motion, it is generally easier to be cognizant of it compared to when you are sitting still. When we’re sitting still in meditation, the sensations that

arise in the body are much more subtle and harder to pay attention to than those that arise while we’re walking. This can make walking meditation an intense experience. You can experience your body very deeply and fully, and you can also find incredible enjoyment from it.

The practice of walking meditation can also be fitted into the gaps of our lives quite easily. It is highly convenient and therefore even more effective. Just walking from the car into the supermarket can be an opportunity for a minute’s walking meditation. Most people who practice this form of meditation agree that outdoor experiences are best and create a sense of renewal within the self that simply can’t be achieved while insulated by indoor surroundings. For your first attempt, you might want to find a park or open space where you will be able to walk for twenty minutes or more without encountering heavy traffic or excessive stimuli.

Now, let’s get to the basic “How-To”: Before starting to walk. Spend a little time standing still. Allow your awareness to be with your body. Take some deep breaths, inhaling deep into the belly. Put your full attention on the sensation of breathing. Then allow the breath to return to normal and notice it going on its own for a little while. Now bring your awareness to your body, noticing how your body feels as you are standing, and becoming aware of all the sensations going on within.

Now begin walking. Walk at a relaxed, fairly slow but normal pace. Pay attention to the sensations in your body as you walk. It is natural to find your attention drawn to the sights around you, but keep bringing your attention back to what is going on internally, first. The idea is to have your attention on the physical experience of walking. If the mind starts getting caught up in thoughts, easily bring your attention back to the experience of walking. Notice how the body feels in great

detail. The entire body is involved in the act of walking — from alternation of the left and right foot to the swinging of your arms and hips.

Notice how the soles of your feet feel… the contact they make with your socks or shoes, the textures of the fabrics touching them, the way they feel as they bear the weight of your body and the sensations in them as your walk along. Feel the entire foot, being aware of how it moves as the heel is placed on the ground, and then the movement rolls to the ball of the foot and toes. Notice how it feels as the foot lifts and moves forward. Allow your awareness to move up through every part of the body, noticing the sensations as you walk. Gradually scan all parts of your body as you bring your attention to the ankles, skin, calves, knees, thighs, hips, pelvis, back, chest, shoulders, arms, neck, and head. When you become aware of tension anywhere in the body, let it go. Allow that part of your body to relax. Allow all of your body to relax. As you do this, the walking will become more enjoyable.

Take in the rest of the world around you… without judgment. Once you are centered, begin to bring in an awareness of your surroundings – wind, sun, air temperature, moisture, nature sounds, structures, people, etc. Incorporate into your sense of oneness, of wholeness, that you have with your body-mind all of these external factors until there is the understanding and the experience of a universal One.

Enjoy & Be Blessed!

Animal and plant of the month with Jennifer Adele

Goldenrod

A wildflower that one can find readily in bloom during the months of October and November and well into the autumn season is the resilient goldenrod… and this flower does well to symbolize Samhain and the thinning of the veil.

In fact, one of the last big flower shows each year is provided by goldenrod species, and it reminds us that even in the dying process there is life. They are all perennials with large clusters of small yellow flowers that appear from the end of summer until a heavy and hard frost. The leaves of goldenrods are simple, lance or egg shaped and usually have a toothed margin. Most species propagate by a spreading root system in addition to seed and they can be a troublesome addition to a wildflower garden for that reason. They become more common in pastures under heavy grazing pressure and so are often used as an indicator species by range managers.

Goldenrod actually belongs to the sunflower family. The Chippewa Indians called it “gizisomukiki” meaning “sun medicine”. The plant has been used medicinally, for a number of ailments. Brews of goldenrod were popular and witches were said to have used goldenrod in potions. In Europe, the leaves were sometimes concocted into what was called Blue Mountain 28 | MYSTIK WAY MAGAZINE

wine. Teas were brewed in both Europe and in North America, particularly by the indigenous. Medicinal extracts and tea leaves made from the aromatic American species as fragrant goldenrod S. odora were exported in the 19th Century to China, where they commanded high prices. The flowers of various species of goldenrods have been used to make yellow dyes for cloth. Nowadays, it is most often used as beautiful, decorative flower. Symbolism: harvest, homecoming, health, abundance, beauty, resilience.

Turkey Harvest time as well as early spring, makes us thankful for all blessings, and these times tend to show adaptability in all areas of life. The Turkey is a bird of these times and it brings the energy of sharing and gift giving. Turkey teaches us how to harvest items with patience and how to expand our thoughts to attract what we need and blossom anew. There is a time for everything, so patience is necessary for those working with turkey energy this month. There is a time to fly and a time to be grounded. Turkey has wings and yet runs along the earth with speed, grace, and agility. This bird has been said to have the power to bring mental thought forms down to the physical level to manifest them as a reality. This is a gift for all those who have turkey as their totem as well. But perhaps above all, Turkey also teaches the vitality of life and how everything is sacred. Nothing is simply mundane. Try to truly sense and appreciate this aspect this month. Give thanks! It is time to listen to your higher vision to achieve goals when the turkey comes upon the scene... whether it be spiritual, physical, mental, or emotional. Turkey will aid in the exchange and transformation of such perceptions with great honor. Happy Harvest Season!!!

Symbolism: generosity, giving, sharing, honor, nobility, patience.

Ancient Greeks preferred the dried leaves smoked particularly to aid in “wet” coughs. Herbal Honey - specifically Coltsfoot-Honey is known to sooth sore throats and coughs, specifically in children. Coltsfoot flowers are also used in making poultice, which is applied for relief from skin complaints, for instance eczema, sores, inflammations and even ulcers.

30 | MYSTIK WAY MAGAZINE

1/3 ounce or 10 g of marshmallow root 1/3 ounce or 10 g of licorice two pounds or about 1 kg of natural honey

To begin with, boil the herbal ingredients in four cups of water for about 15 minutes, strain the liquid and add two pounds of natural honey to it. Subsequently, melt the honey in the mixture by simmering it at a low temperature for about 20 minutes. Cool the mixture and then bottle the syrup. Store the syrup in refrigerator for use when necessary. However, it is important that you consume the syrup within three months’ of its preparation. For best results, take one tablespoonful or 15 ml of the syrup twice to thrice every day. Since, the remedy tastes sweet, it is also liked by children.

Cultivation: Coltsfoot is a perennial, herbaceous plant that invades disturbed areas throughout much of the eastern United States. The basal leaves are heart-shaped, slightly toothed and up to 6 in. (15.2 cm) wide. The dandelion-like flowers are bright yellow in color and emerge before the leaves in early spring. Coltsfoot invades moist, open, disturbed areas such as stream banks, ditches and fields. It readily spreads both by seed and rhizomes, allowing it to form large colonies, which can displace native species. Coltsfoot is native to Europe.

A Druids Tale

by Sherry Gewitzk

I

n April 2013 I started a life changing journey on my druid path I took also Karen Rixon, high priestess. We went to meet Grey Wolf & the British Druid Order in Shropshire, for a weekend in a beautiful place called Wild Ways (retreat centre)Where they were holding the Druid Hedge school Also to meet the World Drum proceeded by a chaga ceremony for healing. I really wasn’t prepared for the massive impact on my life by meeting the members of the order or the experience of the ritual & healing from the Norwegian Tribe, the members of the tribe where White Couger, Morten Wolf Storeide, will Rubach, Lena paalviig Johnsen of the shamanic band Baalfolket.. The world drum has been taken by the tribe to over 152 countries bringing peace & healing ,it was such a privilege to be part of its journey.

sight has improved, so much so he went for a walk without his glasses, which would not have been possible before. The Chaga is an incredible fungus (inonotus obliquus)which grows on birch trees, known by the Siberians as the “gift from God” The mushroom of immortality, it has potent phytochemicals including sterols, phenols, enzymes….. also b vits, pantothenic acid, these all are beneficial for the adrenal glands & the digestive system. Cleansing & powerful healing, enabling the powerful drum to work its magic, the ritual will remain secret & the other members shall remain unnamed until i have their personal permission to tell you who they are & how they came about such a wonderful journey.

Needless to say the benefits of this experience The healing from the drum still runs through my mended my broken heart, a feat that I never would dream possible. I can now progress & veins ,so much so i parted with £130 .00 in the learn my bardic path without the emotional summer to have my own shamanic drum ,so i could translate that message of peace & love to blocks & fear of looking back with remorse anger or any other consuming emotions that who ever felt that they may need it. stop us from progressing. I have since used this drum for healing with I intend to return next spring 2014 but this time astonishing results by administering a drum with my own drum & an open heart in the hope bath & to my utter amazement, a well known the healing & message will benefit hundreds artist with the London papers who used to more. be their cartoonist, retired & suffered with deteriorating eyesight.
