Local Public Library Aid Grants Secretar y of State and State Librarian Jesse W hite has awarded FY15 Illinois Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Aid Grants totaling $15.2 million to 635 public libraries serving almost 12 million patrons. “I am extremely proud of the outstanding service Illinois’ public libraries provide to our communities,” White said. “Our libraries are the best and most reliable information resource available to citizens, and I am pleased to be able to provide these grants each year.” Some of the valuable services public libraries provide include: • Free Internet access • Books, magazines, newspapers, CDs and DVDs • Audiobooks and e-books • Interlibrary loan service • Reference services such as homework assistance • Social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter and text messaging • After school and summer programming for children • Book clubs where patrons read and discuss books • Multicultural programming and translation services • Special programs and services for senior citizens such as tax return assistance and how to use computers and email • Space for voter registration and organ/tissue donor drives • Meeting rooms for important community events Per Capita Grant funding is authorized under Illinois library law and helps ensure that public libraries have some of the resources they need for expenses such as mater ia ls, person nel, equ ipment, elect ron ic access, telecommunications and technolog y. Equalization Aid Grants help qualifying public libraries with a low library tax base ensure a minimum level of funding for library services. PAWS Animal Rescue Event Raising awareness and money for animal rescue are among the goals of Lakeshore PAWS and other organizations attending an event created by Compassionate Canines and the staff of the Campagna Academy. Lakeshore PAWS, an animal rescue organization, will be attending the event on Feb. 21, in Schererville, Ind. at the Campagna Academy. A group of volunteers from Lakeshore PAWS will work a booth and show adoptable dogs to hopefully find homes for them. “Any event we attend we strive to do our best to spread awareness about how important it is to spay and neuter your dogs,” Morgan Bradley, the volunteer and event coordinator for Lakeshore PAWS, said. “We also share stories and answer questions, and we love to promote our dogs available.” The event will also feature dog trainers, vendors for animal items and $20 micro-chipping by “Guardians of the Green Mile”. L a keshore PAWS is a non-prof it orga n i zat ion i n Valparaiso that is dedicated to finding homes for abandoned and unwanted pets. The organization envisions every pet receiving extraordinary care by a stable home.
