THE PULSE Retirement Basics

How to become vested SEIU 775 Benefit Group’s Secure Retirement Plan is the first of its kind in the nation for homecare workers. To become vested in the caregiver retirement plan, you must work at least 300 hours per plan year (March to February) for three years with no permanent break in service. Only hours worked on and after March 1, 2016, for employers covered by terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement are included. What does vested mean? Vesting in a retirement plan means you have a nonforfeitable right to amounts in your account. See your full retirement benefit information online at www.myseiubenefits.org/retirement.

Finding Your

Holiday

With the holidays under way, it can be easy to lose track of your needs. Here are a few ideas to center your emotional well-being during this busy season: Try handmade gift-making. Rushing to buy gifts can become expensive and create anxiety about buying the right item. Save money and add a personal touch by making handmade gifts or baked goods. Pinterest.com is a great source for finding simple, affordable craft tutorials that you can make in batches and customize for your friends and family. Or try writing a thoughtful letter to share your gratitude. Start a new tradition. If you’re caring for a client with dementia, honoring family traditions can be a great way to connect to the holidays. But it’s OK to scale down or try a new, simple tradition. Attend a free holiday concert. Take a drive to look at neighborhood decorations. Or try making a holiday craft or seasonal food item. Take time for yourself. Don’t feel bad if you need to take a few minutes for yourself during group gatherings. Pay attention to your own needs and feelings. Learning a few simple mindfulness exercises can help in these moments. (Try a mindfulness exercise on page 22.) Find support if you need it. The holidays can trigger depression, especially if you are coping with the loss of a loved one. You are not alone! Read stories of caregivers managing their depression on page 24 and resources to find help on page 28.

Jeremy has always had sensitive hearing. We recently purchased earphones to help reduce noise levels and increase his comfort. While earphones are not always necessary, he has a choice when sounds seem to bother him. So far, when we go to strange places, or even at home when he appears affected by the surrounding noises, earphones are a beneficial option. He totally enjoys having them. The overall effect is reducing agitation caused by surrounding noises and they help him remain calm. Now, when a friend calls, I can talk on Over-Ear headphones–

Benefits Group classrooms are now trying Chromebooks (laptops). Using laptops to provide training can be a big change, but the benefits are numerous. Testing is personalized for each student’s knowledge and needs and the training experience itself is more engaging and beneficial. It’s also easier. Three Tips for Computer Anxiety 1. Think about the end goal. There are many benefits to using computers, such as being able to connect to friends and family or easily learn about topics on the web. 2. Start slow. Decide on a couple basic things to learn first and move on to more when you’re ready. 3. Ask a friend or family member for help. They’ll enjoy sharing their expertise and helping you gain an important skill.

mastered the art of providing specialized, compassionate care. Thirty years ago, she had just started running her own restaurant in Vancouver, Canada, when she got a frantic call from her daughter, Sandra. She was experiencing severe abuse from her husband and also having problems stemming from her Type 1 Brittle Diabetes. Nancy had to make a quick decision. Nancy left her restaurant and flew to Texas to care for Sandra and Paul. Not long after, Nancy’s daughter passed away. Her grief was so profound, she says that without Paul she might not have survived. Paul’s care needs started immediately when he was born six months early. He was pronounced dead at birth and was

Advice from caregivers:

How do you practice self-care? “Things I do for self-care: 1. Go to the chiropractor when my body needs adjustments. 2. Go for a massage. 3. Get my nails done at a salon. 4. Meet up with a friend for coffee or lunch and socialize. 5. Go to church and have fellowship. 6. Eat foods that nourish my body. 7. Exercise (although not a real regular occurrence). 8. Send my son to his respite program to allow myself the time for self care.”

“The best way I take care of myself is getting plenty of sleep. My hobbies, like sewing, reading and writing, give me a creative outlet from the pressures of caregiving. I practice yoga, which calms my active mind with the added benefit of improving my strength and flexibility to care for my son, who needs me to lift him for transfers.” Home Care Aide Eva Looper Gantala, cares for her son, Mike, in Monroe, WA.

“How do you unwind and stay mentally healthy when you have an adult child who needs 24-7 care? It’s not easy. To unwind, we watch TV together as a family, especially on weeknights. Sometimes, we play games when I get home from work. I also love going on hikes, riding my bike, going to the movies or working in my garden. ” Home Care Aide Sabrina Horne, cares for her daughter, Brianna,

I love them all!” Home Care Aide Shannon Andersson, cares for her children Aaron and Alyson in Sultan, WA.

“This is what I do to not feel depressed or get too anxious. When I’m having a bad day I pray for my consumer and myself. God shows me how to love one another. I love my job and I meet lots of nice people.” Home Care Aide Norma Martinez, Pasco, WA. 1. Sit in a comfortable position and place your hands on your knees with your palms facing up and close your eyes.

1. Stand with your feet shoulderwidth apart and parallel. Make sure that your weight is distributed evenly so that you rest firmly over the soles of both feet.

2. Gently tuck in your tail bone. 3. Relaxing your upper body, raise your hands to chest height, and spread them apart about 1 foot.

2. Relax your body, especially your neck and shoulders. Inhale deeply and let go of any tension while exhaling. 4. Imagine that you have a ball of energy between your hands and your chest. 5. Maintain this posture for about five to 10 minutes.

3. Raise your hands slowly to chest level, with palms facing each other but not touching. Focus on any sensation you feel between your palms. You may feel warmth, tingling or even your pulse.

4. Part your hands about 2 to 4 inches and focus on the space between them. 5. Pull your hands apart and push them closer again as you maintain your concentration. Feel the energy flow between your palms. 6. Pull your hands farther part and push them closer together. Feel the sensation expand and become stronger. 7. meditation and mindfulness so the class was a perfect opportunity to explore them. Since taking the class, Ken has begun a regular mindfulness practice and has noted changes. The biggest? Patience, particularly for caring for his client. “I feel like I understand her better. I feel that I can look at challenges with more curiosity, versus this urge to blame or lash out. It has developed a lot of my patience. I think patience is the number one thing a caregiver needs. You have to be patient and the other stuff will come.”

Ken was impressed with the diversity of people who attended his class and sought to learn how meditation might help them. “It surprised me how everybody was kind of drawn to it, from all kinds of different cultures and backgrounds. I love that.” Eric says a mindfulness practice should start simply, with everyday tasks. “Whenever you notice that your mind
