BEAVER ISLAND Adventure and a wealth of history intermingle on this, the largest island in Lake Michigan. The excitement begins with the 32-mile trip by small plane or ferry to the island. Once on the island, explore beaches, forests, two lighthouses and several museums. Choose from a well-rounded assortment of casual to upscale restaurants and bars and make time to take in the fun, eclectic shopping district. Once you’ve come this far, you’ll want to stay the night. Know that motel rooms only run about $100 per night even in peak season, and spacious Lake Michigan rental homes start at $1,000 per week. beaverisland.org.

HISTORY Beaver Island’s history is one of the Great Lakes’ greatest stories. In the mid-1800s, a renegade Mormon leader and self-anointed prophet named James Strang led 300 devotees to the island, where he ruled over his independent Mormon “kingdom” until his assassination by followers in 1856. Following Strang’s death, Irish immigrants established a new enclave on the island. Relics of both the Mormon and Irish communities survive today: the Mormon colony’s former print shop is now a museum, and the island’s two Irish pubs are open year round.

GETTING TO THE ISLAND Round-trip fares to Beaver Island run approximately $60 on the ferry and $100 by plane. For details, check out the transportation companies.
