J.W. McCormack Federal Courthouse + Post Office Boston, Massachusetts

The McCormack federal building is a major civic presence in Boston by its central downtown location and is one of the finest examples of Art Deco in the area, as well as an example of the federal relief programs of the 1930s. The U.S. General Services Administration called for the building to retain its function as a Federal Courthouse, including its historic courtrooms and library. The project also features the adaptive reuse of the U.S. Post Office area to serve as offices for a number of federal agencies, with the majority of space serving as the headquarters of the Environmental Protection Agency. The renovated space includes a conference center, new cafeteria, main floor lobby and a public outreach and awareness center. The project is one of the first and largest federal renovations to be targeted for LEED Gold status. The sustainable innovation includes; new energy saving MEP systems, air quality improvements, use of recycled materials throughout and a green roof space encompassing over 25% of the site footprint which is an important open space for the building users.
