The University of Chicago - South Residence Halls + Dining Commons Chicago, Illinois The new 367,000 SF undergraduate residential and dining facility at The University of Chicago is adjacent to the University’s historic Burton Judson Courts residence halls. The two new residence halls and the dining facility are designed to respect the existing campus buildings, respond sensitively to the needs of the surrounding neighborhood, and represent a catalyst for positive change and future development on this campus edge. The complex includes green roofs, in compliance with City of Chicago requirements and sustainable design and energy efficient options have been incorporated from the outset of the project. The project program calls for 811 beds as well as social, support and dining spaces to serve student residents. Through careful attention to massing, scale, materials and detail, the design will invigorate the site and provide a welcoming place for students and the community. The design breaks the population into eight 'houses,' each with its own multistory living room and social spaces. Two new enclosed courtyards serve as focal points for the two residence halls. Complex's massing steps down toward the adjacent residential neighborhood's scale and incorporates stoops and small-scale design elements to enliven the street edge. Dining facility links to and expands existing historic dining spaces to serve both new and existing dorms.
