ALWAYS FOR YOU
T’S ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT YOU, CLASS OF 2018. North Pointe is, at its core, a publication by students, for students. But to us, it is undoubtedly our second family. B-302 has become more than our student media headquarters — it’s our home. While the 23 of us may have all joined for different reasons, we’ve become fully invested in this publication because we feel a responsibility to serve you. The early Monday mornings, the late Wednesday nights, the forfeited tutorials and lunch hours were all for you, our fellow seniors. We’ve worked tirelessly to tell your stories because your voices matter. We’ve become experts at social media stalking and source gathering, become fearless in our pursuit of interviews and picked up skills our naïve selves never could’ve imagined four years ago. All to produce our eight-page, bi-weekly newspaper 16 times each year. It certainly hasn’t been easy. We’ve faced power outages the day before deadline and have taken heat from district
administration. We watched as our honors journalism class and middle school feeder programs were cut because of the budget deficit. But our passion for this work has pushed us through these trying times, and our publication and staff are stronger because of it. We wouldn’t have had it any other way. When craziness ensued, our staff adviser Shari Adwers has been a beacon of light. She saw the individual potential in each of us and was a catalyst in our growth as journalists, people and a team. No one will lead this paper like she has after she moves to Virginia with her family this summer. She created this home for us and made our paper a possibility. As a class of news reporters, it is fair to say we have been successful in our pursuit of the truth. Two of our executive editors received All-State distinction while another received the Detroit News/CATCH Outstanding Graduate scholarship for journalism. Both our print and online editions have received Spartan Awards with Seals of Distinction, the highest

honor any high school publication can receive in the State of Michigan, for the last two years. Likewise, our paper won the national Best in Show competition in April for our special walkout issue and has consistently placed in the top 10 for all broadsheet newspapers nationally over the last three years. But seniors, we could not have done it without you. Thank you for sharing your stories, for letting us interview you, for allowing us to take your photo (even when you thought you looked bad) and, finally, for picking up our paper. Thank you for reading our articles, catching our typos, looking at our designs, browsing our photos and validating our work. We truly can’t think of a better and more rewarding service to give to the class that has given us so much. We hope we’ve served you as well as this program has served us.
