CORLISS KEESY GREENVILLE — Corliss Keesy (aka Corky, Gene, Dad, Grandpa), King of Karaoke, Merlot Lover, World Champion Power Lifter, Shoe Aficionado, and World Traveler, passed from this world on October 23, 2020, at the age of 81, following a courageous battle with lung cancer. Dad loved nothing more than to entertain crowds, from sea to shining sea (preferably on a Crystal Cruise ship), at Silo’s or Downtown Joe’s in Napa Valley, or at a “local juke joint” in his beloved home town of Greenville, Ohio, with his signature Sinatrastyle crooning. He deservedly boasted of his many karaoke contest wins! Another passion and point of pride was his physical fitness. He enjoyed powerlifting with his buddies at the YMCA for many, many years. He participated in multiple competitions across the state and nation and, at ages 75 and 80, he set world records in bench press and dead lift. During COVID quarantine, to combat boredom, he studied and became certified as a strength and conditioning coach. Dad became a selfpurported democrat several years ago and enjoyed nothing more than to offend anyone he could by posting Trump-bashing comments on Facebook. He reveled in ruffling feathers and bantering with his friends that had opposing views. He was a consummate ornery old man and he owned it! Dad loved to travel and

he cruised over 120 times, exploring the globe. For several years after retirement, he served as the Host with the Most, dancing and entertaining the ladies in exchange for a ticket to ride… or sail. Those days came to an end almost 11 years ago when he met the woman who swept him off his dancing feet and stole his heart. She became the love of his life, travel partner, and constant companion. When not traveling the oceans and canals on a Crystal Cruise ship, they could be found at the Napa wineries or road tripping across the west coast with their beloved dog Toshi. Dad was most proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and relished the time he spent with them. He is preceded in death by his mother, Myrtle Keesy; siblings, Jim, Keith, and Carol; and nephews, Paul and Mike. He is survived by his better half of 10 years, Gayety Hirahara; three children, Karyl Kindell, Kent Keesy and Kris Keesy-Collier (Rob); seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A celebration of Gene’s remarkable life will be held Saturday, November 7th, 2020, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Montage Café in Greenville, Ohio. All are welcome. Arrangements have been entrusted to Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville. Condolences for the family may be expressed through www. zecharbailey.com

Cool-season grasses, including fescue and bluegrass, are best fertilized sometime between the months of September and November. Warmseason grasses, such as Bermuda or zoysia, should be fertilized between July and September. Once homeowners have gained a greater understanding of their lawns, they can begin exploring the various ways to prepare their lawns for whatever winter has in store.

1. Explore winterizing fertilizers. Homeowners who want to make their grasses more winter hardy can consult landscaping professionals to determine if winterizing fertilizers will work

for their lawns. These specially formulated fertilizers, many of which are made exclusively for cool-season grasses, contain higher levels of potassium and lower levels of nitrogen than early-season fertilizers. Potassium helps strengthen and harden plants, and cool-season grasses may need extra potassium as winter settles in. Homeowners who are not sure if they should apply winterizing fertilizer can conduct soil tests to determine the potassium levels in their soil. If the test indicates the soil has sufficient potassium, then applying a winterizing fertilizer is likely unnecessary. In addition, homeowners who have fed their lawn a balance of nutrients throughout spring and summer likely will not need to apply winterizing fertilizer.

left laying on lawns for long periods of time can contribute to the same types of damage as leaves left on the lawn throughout winter, so do your best to remove leaves as they fall.

3. Take steps to fight snow mold. Homeowners who live in regions where snow falls into spring or where spring tends to be cold and damp may want to take steps to prevent snow mold. Gray snow mold typically looks fuzzy and gray, and lawns infested with snow mold may develop unsightly gray or brown spots indicative of dead grass. Pink snow mold may be even worse than gray snow mold because pink mold attacks the roots as well as the leaves. To prevent snow mold, continue mowing into the fall, even as lawns grow dormant, clearing the lawn of grass clippings and leaves after each mow. Thick lawns may provide a breeding ground for snow mold, so homeowners whose lawns have a history of developing snow mold may benefit from mowing their lawns into the fall.

2. Get rid of fallen leaves.

While fallen leaves may be integral components of idyllic autumn landscapes, leaves left on the lawn throughout the winter may lead to disease in the grass. Leaves trap moisture and block sunlight and air from reaching grass, and that can encourage the development of disease. In addition, leaves can harbor insects that also may contribute to disease. While it might seem like common sense to delay leaf removal until the end of autumn when all the leaves have fallen, that, too, can prove harmful to lawns. Leaves

USDA celebrates grant in Greenville

By Nathaniel Kubik DarkeCountyMedia.com

GREENVILLE — U.S. Department of Agriculture Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Bette Brand was in Greenville on Wednesday to commemorate a $23,750 Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program (HBIIP) grant to the Richmond, Indiana based Harvest Land Cooperative. Also in attendance at the event were Congressman

Warren Davidson, USDA Ohio Rural Development Director David L. Hall, and USDA Indiana Rural Development Director Michael R. Dora. The portion of the grant comes courtesy of a $117,000 investment by the Trump administration to improve biofuel sales in Ohio and Indiana. “The Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program supports American farmers and boosts rural economic develop-

ment by expanding ethanol and biodiesel sales,” said Brand in a new release from the USDA Rural Development Office. “The investment we’re recognizing today is among $22 million awarded in the program nationwide, expected to increase ethanol demand by nearly 150 million gallons annually.” Harvest Land, and the other cooperative present at the event, CountryMark, are both in close work with the USDA to strengthen

rural communities like Darke County. The Greenville funds will be used to offset the cost of replacing two dispensers at the CountryMark cooperativesupported fueling station located at 619 Sater Street. In view of the larger developments within the program, it was reported that ethanol sales are expected to rise by an estimated 238,954 gallons annually in the area. See USDA | 5B

CELINA — This month’s recipient of the Mercer Savings Bank Giving Mission donation is State of the Heart Care, a non-profit, multi-service hospice and bereavement agency with locations serving 15 counties in Indiana and Ohio, including Greenville. State of the Heart Care is the first hospice organization in the United States benefiting an entirely rural population, and the agency continues to pioneer that tradition by providing ongoing, comprehensive services to enhance the dignity and quality of life

to those it serves. Throughout its nearly 40-year history, the agency’s mission has remained the same. Erica Wood, Business Development Specialist at State of the Heart Care, says, “We are a nonprofit hospice, and our mission is to serve our communities by providing compassionate hospice and palliative care to patients and families experiencing life-limiting illness. We serve any patient, regardless of their ability to pay.” Today, the agency’s services span everything from hospice care and grief services to music therapy and

support programs for those struggling with a terminal or life-limiting illness. As a non-profit agency, State of the Heart Care relies on private and community support to make these programs and services possible. The team at Mercer Savings Bank requested that the Giving Mission donation benefit the organization’s front-line workers, the superheroes — State of the Heart Care’s clinical staff. This donation may be used to purchase vital equipment and supplies or educational opportunities. Donations See DONATES | 2B

TIRE MAINTENANCE essential to staying safe on the road Maintaining a vehicle is a great way to stay safe on the road while extending the car’s life. Routine maintenance can keep a car running like new for years as long as vehicle owners stay on top of things and stick to a maintenance schedule. Most drivers are aware of when to get their oil changed and other fluids checked, but not all drivers know how to maintain their vehicle’s tires. Proper tire maintenance makes a car safer for drivers and their passengers and can even pad a driver’s pocket with a little extra money.

Tire maintenance, including routinely checking tire pressure, is an essential element to safe driving.

Routinely check tire pressure. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that tirerelated crashes are most often caused by underinflated tires. Underinflation isn’t always caused by a leak. In fact, gradual loss of pressure is natural, particularly when the seasons change and temperatures dip. An underinflated tire makes handling difficult and can even cause structural damage to a vehicle. Drivers should check their vehicle’s tire pressure at least once a month. Those who have long commutes should check their tire pressure more frequently, and it’s always a good idea to check tire pressure before and after a long road trip. Recommended tire pressures are listed in the owner’s manual.

Look for abnormal wear and tear. Tires will wear down over time, gradually losing tread. However, drivers should inspect tires for excessive wear and tear, which could be indicative of other issues, including underinflation and alignment problems with steering and suspension. Additional issues to look for include bulges or cracks on the sidewalls or tread and any signs of a punctured tire. Rotate tires. Most drivers have heard of tire rotation but might not know how often tires should be rotated or even why rotation is necessary. The owner’s manual will solve the first problem, identifying how often tires should be rotated (most suggest every 6,000 miles). As for why it’s good to rotate tires, doing so helps achieve even tread and extend the life of the tires. Tires are expensive, and rotation can help drivers get more bang for their buck. Drivers of front-wheel drive vehicles will notice their front tires wear down faster than their rear tires. That’s because the front tires are doing most of the work, bearing the brunt of the force of braking, steering and driving. Rotating tires effectively levels the playing field.

Stay balanced. Sometimes tires become unbalanced. When taking a car in for routine maintenance, ask the mechanic to see if there are any issues regarding balance. Out of balance tires can cause significant issues that stretch beyond just uneven tread wear. An out of balance tire can wear down the vehicle’s suspension. When driving at highway speeds, drivers might notice a considerable thumping. This is often indicative of an out of balance tire.

We Can Handle It All.

Stay cool. Sudden tire failure can often be traced back to overheated tires. A tire can overheat for a number of reasons, including aggressive driving. Frequently driving on coarse surfaces or at high speeds can also increases tire temperatures, as does ambient temperature. Driving at high speeds on a very hot day increases the risk of sudden tire failure, as does driving at high speeds on coarse surfaces. To reduce tire temperature, avoid doing these things simultaneously. If it’s an especially hot day, for example, don’t drive aggressively and maintain lower speeds.

Don’t mix and match. A vehicle’s balance can be affected significantly if owners mix and match their tires. Having different tires on the left and right sides is likely to upset a car’s balance. When installing tires, do so in front or rear pairs or even complete sets. Pairs should also be the same size, brand and type, and should have the same tread wear as well. Should one tire go bad, it’s almost always worth it to buy two tires. When buying two, always put the two new tires on the rear wheels, regardless of which type of transmission (rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, etc.) the vehicle has. The rear wheels need maximum traction so the vehicle can remain stable. Don’t overload a tire. Check tires for their maximum load range, which will be listed on the tire sidewall. This maximum load should never be exceeded. Doing so will increase tire wear and shorten the tire’s life. Excessive load also increases the risk of sudden tire failure. It’s important to note the maximum passenger and cargo load intended by the vehicle manufacturer is often significantly less than what the vehicle can actually hold. But drivers must adhere to this figure to ensure their vehicles are safe and reduce the risk of sudden tire failure.

Spiders and goblins and true scary stories, Oh My! draped across his body. He moaned like the Kansas west wind. The youngsters screamed and bolted. Finally, senior class sponsor Betty Stevens was ready to call it a night. She and the students thought they’d take a souvenir photo. Now it was the colleague and seniors who screamed. Not even Edgar Allan Poe’s morbid imagination could have conjured what they discovered. The house was now haunted — for real. A prop that Mr. Sallee had put under his feet for balance had slipped. He dangled in the pitch-dark chamber. Rope burns covered his neck. An autopsy called the cause of death “accidental strangulation.” Law enforcement investigated the mystery of the superintendent’s demise. “We don’t know for sure what happened,” county undersheriff Jack Gantz said to a reporter. “We believe he fell and struck his neck on the rope.” Ever after, Utica continued to lose population, particularly that of young persons. The 2018 population fell to 144. Utica High School graduates marched off to study at Fort Hays State University and rarely returned. The houses that remained were well kept. Old timers met for coffee every day at the breakfast hangout, a cafe. Services

continued at the First Christian Church and United Methodist Church. But after high school classes dwindled to just a few enrolled students, authorities shut it down and offered the school building for sale. Then in 2008, Utica City found itself again in the national spotlight. Once again, reporters told a shocking story. A former Utica student named Pam had left town for Ness City to live in the yellow-and-white trailer of a boyfriend named Kory. Unknown to anyone but him and her, Pam suffered from a phobia. Her story might have shocked even Dr. Oliver Sacks, author of “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.” Pam refused to leave the trailer. Then she refused to leave the trailer’s bathroom. She ate in the bathroom. She kept clothing in the bathroom. She did what everyone else does in a bathroom. Unbelievably, Kory went along with this delusional existence. Instead of getting help, he left her a stack of meals for the day and worked at an antique store. When Pam’s relatives from Utica came to see her, she screamed through the bathroom door that she never wanted to see them again. Predictably, things grew worse. For months, she stayed
