The business, located at 114 North Broadway, specializes in cutting gravestones. Murphy excited Time capsule contents revealed to be part of GHS JROTC By Rob Kiser

GREENVILLE — It has been an interesting four months for Chief Michael Murphy, the new Naval Science instructor for the Greenville High School’s Junior Naval ROTC program. Murphy, who came to Greenville from St. Louis, to work with Commander Winford Knowles, started at Greenville March 16. “That was the same day the schools were closed (for the Murphy Coronavirus),” Murphy said. “It was definitely weird. I came in that day looking forward to meeting all the cadets.” Murphy has 11 years active duty in the Marine Corps and has served in the U.S. Naval Reserves for another 15 years. So, what was it that brought him to Greenville? “Everyone always asks me that,” Murphy said with a smile. “I looked forward to the opportunity to work with Commander Knowles.” Murphy had an opportunity to work at a school in St. Louis which is all cadets — a school just for ROTC. “It is one of four or five schools in the nation like that,” Murphy said. “I just felt like I could make a bigger impact working with 80 cadets as opposed to working with 800. “I am very happy that Chief Murphy is here, as you get to know him, you will understand why I say that,” Knowles said at a Greenville board meeting earlier this month. “He is going to be a great asset to Greenville, the community and the school system. Murphy is looking forward to getting started. “I am very happy to be here,” he said. “It was an honor to be hired on by Mr. Fries, Mr. Hughes and Commander Knowles. I am looking forward to working with students and cadets, as well and doing things in community. My desire and focus See MURPHY | 2A

GREENVILLE — It was the unveiling of history Monday at the Greenville Fire House. A Time Capsule honoring the 225th anniversary of the the signing of the Treaty of Greenville was opened. The Treaty of Greenville, also called Treaty of Fort Greenville, (Aug. 3, 1795), was a settlement that concluded hostilities between the United States and an Indian confederation headed by Miami Chief Little Turtle by which the Indians ceded most of the future state of Ohio and significant portions of what would become the states of Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan. “It is an exciting time,” Greenville mayor Steve Willman said. “It is almost like Christmas, only the presents have been there

We soon were treated at all hours to Willie’s croaks. Always his neck would swell and then he’d announce his presence. For about a week as we packed books into boxes, my wife and I began to refer to Willie as our pet. Our beloved Labrador retriever Casey had died of old age and we were petless. Then I made a big, irretrievable mistake. I went on the Internet and found several sites with male toads making mating cries and other cries to stake out their territory. Willie at first answered. But then his behavior changed the next three days. Instead of plopping in his dish and exploring the tank, Willie began jumping for the screen. Clearly, he wanted to escape. Worse, he ignored completely the fresh crickets and wax worms that dropped beside him. My wife minced no words. She told me that either Willie was frightened of the toads with booming male potency. Or else he wanted company and was now lonely. Whatever the case it was clear that he regarded the once idyllic tank as a

prison. What to do? Keeping him was impossible. He’d starve in no time. Putting him back in the crack was no good either. One day he’d end up a skidmark on the new owner’s boots. So we sealed the crack and found another nice hole on the side of the stoop. T’was there that my wife and I deposited the now “Free Willie.” I dropped a fat meal worm into the hole. Sure enough, that long tongue flicked and the moth was dinner. Now it was time for our move, but the day before departing my wife and I spotted Willie happily moving in and out of rocks near the stoop. So that’s the end of the story. Except for one detail. I’m now writing a children’s story called “The Toad in the Stoop.” Who knows, maybe I’ll sell it and get back the $100 I spent on Willie. Hank Nuwer is newly moved to Union City, Indiana — about one block from Darke County. He retired July 1, 2020, from the Franklin College Pulliam School of Journalism after 18 years. He is the author of the historical novel Sons of the Dawn: A Basque Odyssey, which makes use of his experiences as a young reporter trailing a large band of sheep with Basque herders from Spain. August as well. When asked about Miami County schools, Hurst noted that MiltonUnion, Piqua and Troy are starting September 8 and Tipp City is starting August 31. “I would think it is a potential help to solve some of the problem,” he said “I still think it is a good idea. It is going to give us a little time between when mandates come out and when we get kids in the school.” The board then passed revising the calendar by a 4-1 vote.

OBITUARIES JOANNA SCHMERMUND EL CAMPO, Tex. — Joanna Schmermund, age 95, formerly of Rockport, Texas and Greenville, Ohio, died July 27, 2020, surrounded and loved by her family in El Campo, Texas, after battling limitations from a stroke. Joanna was born June 27, 1925, in the small village of Gettysburg, Darke County, Ohio, to the late Lewis Hiram Marker and Myrtle Roll Marker and graduated from Greenville High School in 1943. Joanna was united in marriage to George F. Schmermund III in 1946, and they were blessed with two sons, George IV and John, both of El Campo, Texas. Joanna attended the School of Radiology Technology, and after graduation, began her 30-year career for Wayne Hospital in Greenville as an Administrative Manager of the Radiology Department. She supported her husband in more ways than one and was considered a regular customer at her husband’s family business, Schmermund’s Jewelers. Joanna was admired by many with her ability to have fun, dress to impress, continued leadership, and dedication to caring for her husband and family. Her family knew better than trying to surprise her because of the many organizations in which she participated. If not serving as president, Joanna definitely offered her input, taking charge in some form. The organizations that benefited from her leadership and involvement were Eastern Star, American Heart Association, Criterion Club, Vestry of the Episcopal Church, Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs, Allegro Women’s Club, Key Allegro Garden Club and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. At home, Joanna often polished her silver collec-

tion or set the table in anticipation of company, especially family and friends. If grandchildren knocked on the door, her first invite was to a tea party or dinner, which required both a formal table setting and napkins on the lap. Until the time of her stroke, her days consisted of organizing her belongings, volunteering at the cash register at the local thrift-shop, Castaways, picking up friends to go dancing, or modeling clothes on the runway for charity. She never gave up teaching valuable life lessons and how to be a role model for future generations. Joanna is survived by her children George F. Schmermund IV and wife, Karen, and John J. Schmermund and wife, Anna; grandchildren Stacy Romo and husband Rick, George F. Schmermund V and Alisa, Brandie Bodungen and husband, Derrick, and Britni Key and husband, William; great-grandchildren Adrian Martinez and fiancé, Danielle Lara, Kiara Romo, Emilie and Kate Bodungen, Addelin, Anaclare and Bennet Key, Krysta and Ty Bubela; and one great-greatgrandchild, Dawson Martinez, all of El Campo, Tex. Joanna was preceded in death by her loving husband, George F. Schmermund III; sisters, Marge, Francis, Helen, Mary, Gwen, and brother, Dan Marker. A celebration will be held by the family in the upcoming months with future interment in Abbottsville Cemetery, Darke County, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Joanna’s memory to the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 555 Enterprise Blvd, Rockport, TX 78382, or the Allegro Women’s Club c/o Mary Painton, 1901 Bay Shore Drive, Rockport, TX 78382.

Many of the documents were historic, along with some medals, past newspapers and other items. Brenda Arnett, representing the daughters of the American Revolution, then made a commemorative presentation to be added to the next time capsule. “We appreciate the fact that after 225 years, people are still honoring and remembering those who fought in the American Revolution,” Arnett said. “And I have one more thing I want to add.” With a laugh, she held up a COVID-19 mask. “That way, when people open the next time capsule, they will know about the pandemic we have gone through,” she said. The purpose of the project was to restore those headstones and provide them with a stable foundation to endure over time. “I began thinking of the project as I drove by and noticed the dire shape of the cemetery,” said Wykes. “I chose the project and contacted the township for consideration and approval of the project.” After nearly five months of research, planning and endless phone calls, Wykes was able to gather as much backing as possible See EAGLE | 2B

Fair Board discusses junior fair, concession vendors By Nathaniel Kubik DarkeCountyMedia.com

GREENVILLE — The Darke County Fair Board met Wednesday evening to discuss plans for the junior fair livestock sales and concessions. The junior fair this year will operate for six days, August 21 to 26, and is not open to the public. A drive thru food pick-up system will operate August 27, 28, and 29, which allows for the general public to drive through the fair grounds to pick up food from a limited number of vendors. The details on how this can be done safely and efficiently are still being worked out. “We hope to have around 20 to 30 vendors,” noted Brian Rismiller, the fair manager. “Right now, we are working out a system in which cars enter the fairgrounds from one side, get their food, and exit from another. We are just trying to keep people safe and keep a solid flow of traffic.” All parking for the junior fair will be south of the coliseum, with no general parking allowed anywhere else on the fairgrounds. General admission to the junior fair will not be granted without an entry wrist band, and patrons are not permitted to walk the fairgrounds as usual. Each exhibitor participating in the junior fair gets one wrist band for themselves, plus six additional wristbands for family members to attend their showing. Junior fair advisors will also receive one wrist band each. The wrist bands will be distributed through the

junior fair coordinators, similar to how parking passes have been distributed in previous years. By Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s mandate, all visitors permitted into the fairgrounds must, at all times, wear a mask when unable to consistently maintain six feet of distance from other attendees. Exhibitions in the junior fair are limited to 10 participants at a time, and wearing a mask is not required by those participating in an event, but social distancing measures are to be followed whenever possible. The meeting featured a lengthy public forum in which members of the community presented on issues ranging from cleaning duties to the sale of livestock from the junior fair. One attendee was particularly upset about the sale of his children’s hogs when, as he argued, he would be better suited to keep the animals due to rising meat prices caused by COVID-19. “The coronavirus has caused the price of a pound of bacon to rise to nearly six dollars,” the resident argued. “I don’t want to be forced to sell my hog for $40 to $50 when I could just take it home and save money in the long run not having to buy meat.” This prompted the board to carry a motion that allows junior fair participants to make their own decision on whether or not they want to keep or sell their hog. After further discussion, another motion was carried that removed the See FAIR | 3B

and move forward with his project. A total of 15 adults and scouts from Troop 134 helped in completing the project which consisted of the restoration of 52 headstones in a single day. The cost of the project was made possible by funds provided by Abbottsville Monuments, Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Jim Gable State Farm, and donations of materials by Lowe’s Home Improvement. Nickol Monuments provided valuable insight into how to repair the headstones. “I can’t give everyone enough credit for the donations or enough thanks to all those who came out to help with the project,” Wykes said. “Of all the memories I have of being a scout, this project by far is the most memorable over the years because of them.” Wykes, a 2020 graduate of Greenville High School, is the son of Steve and Janalyn Wykes. Mason credits his parents as being a driving force behind his success as a scout and in his academic and athletic achievements as a member of The National Honor Society and a varsity basketball player. In addition to Eagle Scout Rank, Mason was awarded a Bronze and Gold Palm for his Eagle Scout Medal for completing 10 additional Merit Badges beyond what is required for Eagle Scout. Wykes’ Court of Honor ceremony will be held as soon the current COVID19 pandemic allows.

Gracious Mineral Co. a ‘rock-solid’ addition to Greenville of the people who come in are pretty knowledgeable. And there are others that are new to crystals. I know Greenville is looking to become more progressive and this store will help with that. It will bring some different people in.” Phlipot, who sells items from all over the world, started her business three and a half years ago. “I am from Indiana, but my husband is from this area so here I am,” she said with a laugh. “I started a business from my house, which was online only. Then, the opportunity came to move into the store here.” Gracious Mineral Co. is open from 12 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, 12 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, by appointment only on Thursdays, 12 to 6 p.m. on Fridays,

GREENVILLE — If you’re looking to explore the health benefits of crystals, or looking looking for a beautiful rock, then The Gracious Mineral Co. in downtown Greenville is the place to see. Shop owner Destiny Phlipot moved into the location at 410 S. Broadway several months ago and her storefront business is now up and running. “I moved in here in March,” Phlipot said. “It took from March to June to take it from a coffee shop to a rock shop.” Phlipot has had a love of rocks since she was a young girl growing up in rural Indiana. “I realized it when I was six or seven and I would collect rocks and then go out by the road and try to sell them to vehicles going by,” Phlipot said. “Of course, that was only one or two vehicles, where we lived was pretty rural. And no one ever bought them, but I guess that was when I realized I was a ‘rock hound’.” As she grew older, Phlipot realized what she wanted to do. “I saw people [in crystal stores] and I thought that would be a dream job,” Phlipot said. “That I would like doing something like that.”

Destiny Phlipot is the owner of the recently opened Gracious Mineral Company in downtown Greenville.

Whether it is quartz, amethyst or crystals, which are believed to provide health benefits, Phlipot has plenty to offer — something you don’t often see in a rural community like Greenville. IN THE COURT OF COMMON PLEAS DARKE COUNTY, OHIO JONATHAN P. HEIN, JUDGE Case No. 20-CV-00330 Public Notice of Foreclosure Scott J. Zumbrink vs Lance L. Leber, et al Darke County Treasurer Defendant Darke County Courthouse Greenville, Ohio 45331 Plaintiff Public notice is hereby given that on July 22, 2020 the Treasurer of Darke County, Ohio, filed a Complaint in the Common Pleas Court of Darke County, Ohio, for the foreclosure of liens for delinquent taxes, assessments, charges, penalties, and interest against real property described in that Complaint. Such action is brought against the real property only and no personal judgment shall be entered in it. If no answer is filed on or before the last day for filing an answer, a judgment of foreclosure will be taken by default. Any parcel as to which a foreclosure is taken by default shall be sold for the satisfaction of the taxes, assessments, charges, penalties, and interest, and the costs incurred in the foreclosure proceeding, which are due and unpaid. and will heal their land.” Please take note - there is no mention of the heathen getting right with God. God lays the burden on His people, which are called by His name. The power of God is the gospel of Christ, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16). Much of the modern church has exchanged God’s power for entertainment, worldliness, and self-help sermons. The first part of the gospel is that all men are sinners. However, tolerance to sin is the rule of the day. Sin is now considered a mistake, an unfortunate decision, or a lifestyle choice. The gospel message, and therefore, the power of God, stops right there. If someone will not admit their sin, there is no need for a Saviour from sin. The gospel is made null and void. The preaching of sin, punishment because of sin, and the need for a Saviour have long been absent from many American pulpits. Again, the teaching of the gospel, the sacrificial death of Christ on the cross, is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:17-18, “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
