Henry/Clayton Community Living

‘Community’ is where we live C

ommunity means many things to many people. For the residents of Clayton and Henry counties, community encompasses our places of worship, our schools, the sports we play, the parks we visit, the schools we attend, the arts we enjoy, the places we work and the organizations where we volunteer to help others. Our community allows us to build connections with other people and helps to define who we are. Community is where we feel at home. In the 2016 edition of Community Living, we highlight some of the hallmarks of our community that enhance the quality of life

in Henry and Clayton counties. This is just a sample of what is available to enjoy in the Southern Crescent. If you are a newcomer, we encourage you to explore these community gems. If you’ve visited them before, take time to reacquaint yourself with all that they have to offer. You may be surprised at what you find. We also invite you to learn a bit about the local institutions — fire departments, police departments, and city and county governments — that work to keep the community safe and vibrant. We hope you enjoy learning more about them. — The staff of the Henry Herald and Clayton News

Clayton adds new schools, programs BY JOHNNY JACKSON

jjackson@news-daily.com

JONESBORO — Already diverse culturally, one local school district is increasing its academic profile. Clayton County Public Schools has added several magnet programs to its cover over the years, including a performing arts high school. But recently the district converted two public charter school programs into magnet programs — one of them a Spanish dual language immersion program. This summer, the district absorbed students from Unidos Dual Language Charter School, whose charter expired in June. The K-8 charter school — whose K-5 students attend school at Hendrix Drive in Forest Park and 6-8 students attend classes out of the new Morrow Middle — was converted into a district mag-

net program to offer students an opportunity to learn various subjects in both Spanish and English. The district is also home to education programs oriented to fine arts, performance arts and science, technology, engineering and math. The Clayton County Board

of Education added the county’s 11th high school this summer as well, taking students from the defunct Elite Scholars Academy Charter School whose charter expired in June. The school board is building a new facility to house students enrolled in the program.

Officials hosted a groundbreaking ceremony in March for the SPLOST-funded $22.17 million facility on Fielder Road in Jonesboro. The building is expected to open in 2018, when Elite Scholars Academy students will move from the old Morrow Middle facility.

The Jonesboro High School boys basketball program is the most notable, winning two straight Class AAAA state titles in 2014 and 2015. The Cardinals played for the Class AAAA state championship in 2016, but fell to Liberty County 58-52. The Lovejoy High School football program made noise

in the early part of the decade, playing for state championships in 2011 and 2012. The Wildcats lost just six games from 2010 to 2014. The Forest Park girls basketball program has also enjoyed recent success under head coach Stephen Cole, advancing to the Final Four in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015. The Mount Zion boys track and field program claimed a state title in 2014, as well. There are several notable professional athletes who hail from Clayton County. Green Bay Packers safety Morgan Burnett (North Clayton), former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward (Forest Park), former NFL running back Tashard Choice (Lovejoy), NBA and NFL players Toney Douglas and Harry Douglas (Jonesboro), Olympic gold medalist Steve Lundquist (Jonesboro) and Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Cordy Glenn (Riverdale) are among the famous names that have graduated from Clayton County Public Schools.

Henry expecting big population growth BY ASIA ASHLEY

aashley@henryherald.com

McDONOUGH— With Henry County’s population growth expected to jump more than 60 percent by 2040, commercial and residential development is rising steadily. The Atlanta Regional Commission forecasts the Family Tradition Since 1966

county’s population will grow to 352,000 during the next 25 years. The most recent figures from 2013 population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show Henry County has a population of just over 211,000. ARC reports that Henry County will become more diverse as the county’s His-

panic population more than doubles to 33,000. The share of Henry’s population that is Hispanic will be 10 percent — still well below the regional average of 24 percent. The share of the county’s population that is 65 and over is predicted to increase from 11 percent to 20 percent. Led by growth in the education sector, Henry will add 31,845 jobs — an employment growth rate of 46 percent, according to the ARC. The unemployment in Henry County decreased to 5.8 percent as of February 2016, down from the 6.4 percent reported in February 2015, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. Henry County has also been a target area for residential and commercial growth. In the year 2012, a total of 173 building permits were issued for single family homes, while 139 were issued for

Clayton County on the rise with growth BY JOE ADGIE

jadgie@news-daily.com

The sixth-most populous county in the state, Clayton County continues to make improvements, not the least of which is a steady continual drop in the unemployment rate. Over the past several years, the unemployment rate has trended downward in Clayton County. At his State of the County speech in March, Board of Commissioners Chairman Jeff Turner said the county’s unemployment rate decreased faster than any other in 2015 and 50 to 100 jobs were created monthly. In addition, warehouses for Kroger and the Castellini Group became operational, and more than 2 million square feet of industrial space was developed in the county. Clayton boasts the fifth largest labor force in the state, according to Turner. At the core of that drop in unemployment is what county

officials call the largest labor force in the four-county Southern Crescent. Clayton County has opted to focus on its core industries when attracting businesses. These have been defined by Courtney Pogue, director of the Clayton County Office of Economic Development and Film, as transportation, logistics and retail. The county has housed a number of film and television

productions over the past year. “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” “Captain America: Civil War” and “Sleepy Hollow” have all filmed in Clayton County. “The estimated film industry investment in the local Clayton County economy for 2015 was $250,000,” Turner said. The county has also experienced a boost in tourism and says it experienced a $1.337 billion economic impact from tourism.

Much of that can be owed to the fact that the world’s largest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, is in Clayton County. “Every time a plane lands — and God knows enough planes land here — someone enters our county,” Turner said. Key facts: The Clayton County Board of Commissioners consists of four commissioners elected from four different districts, and an at-large board chairman, who has voting powers. The BOC meets twice a month, on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. The commissioners serve staggered four-year terms. The administration building is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Clayton County Administration Building: 112 Smith St., Jonesboro Phone: 770-477-3208 Website: www.claytoncountyga.gov

The department has funding obstacles it would like to overcome in coming years in regards to updating an aging fleet of vehicles and technology. “We would like to be able to purchase body-worn cameras for

our officers, but have found that the records retention aspect is extremely expensive. We are also looking to expand and add another precinct in the next couple of years,” Nichols said. Clayton County Fire has new ideas BY KAYLA LANGMAID

RIVERDALE — Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services was the first in the U.S. to employ nonphysician practitioners for the purpose of a “treat and release” program, where patients can be treated at their homes.

In 2013, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners and Fire Chief and EMA Director Landry Merkison began implementing some new and innovative ideas to serve the health care needs of the community. vehicles. Merkison was appointed in November 2013 as the sixth fire chief for Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services. During his 24-year career, he has advanced through the ranks as a rookie firefighter to becoming the fire chief and EMS director for Clayton County. Merkison introduced a new smartphone app in March to help residents stay safe and informed during emergency situations. The county’s first mobile phone app launched just in time for tornado season. Ready Clayton will allow the public to receive real-time weather alerts, make a customized family emergency plan and provide disaster and safety guidelines. It also shows locations of shelters and emergency services, Battalion Chief David Vazquez stated in a press release.
