Brady’s Bunch Looks to Rep Women Hope to Lift T It was the greatest finish in the history of Southeastern Louisiana Track and Field. Trailing UT Arlington by one and a half points heading into the final event, the Lions’ 4x400 meter relay team posted a school record time to beat the Mavericks and capture the 2009 Southland Conference men’s outdoor championship.

expectations for junior Dorcus Kapkiai. The Louisiana Sports Writers Association awarded her with cross country co-runner of the year honors. She was Southeastern’s top female runner in every meet she participated in during the 2009 season and earned two individual victories in the process.

Tasting that success made the Lions hungry for more, while the Lady Lions want to have their own moment in the championship spotlight.

Naomi Jeruto was the LSWA’s choice as female newcomer of the year. The transfer from Lindenwood College made an immediate impact on the Southeastern women’s cross country team. She racked up four straight individual top ten finishes. The Lady Lions will be counting on her to perform well in middle distance races.

Distance/Cross Country On the men’s side, Kalphys Kemboi and Henry Rop enter the 2010 track season after another stellar cross country campaign in 2009. The pair earned All-Southland and All-Louisiana honors after finishing in the top 10 at the league meet. Rop went on to capture a top 20 finish in the NCAA south central regional meet. Kemboi and Rop will be supported by Jaron Ortego, a transfer from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, plus senior Kyle Golden. Freshman Jesse McDavitt will redshirt during the indoor season, but could contribute in the 10k during the outdoor campaign. New Orleans native Scott Richardson joins the Lions after a solid career at Brother Martin High School, and will likely be a key component of the distance medley relay. On the women’s side, there are great

Sprints/Hurdles Southeastern has an outstanding group of hurdlers returning in 2010. For the men, Kernell Jupiter, Cory Roberts and Damian Manning are expected to have great indoor and outdoor seasons. They should head up one of the most solid units on the team. Adlus Wiltz looks to improve upon his school record 800 meter run time of 1:53.18 during the indoor campaign. Outdoors, he’ll be called upon to lead the Lions in the 400 meter dash, and will be part of the championship 4x400 meter relay team again in 2010. Shannon Grover will be called on to con-

tribute in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 4x100 meter relay and 4x400 meter relay. He reached the NCAA outdoor regionals in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash in both the 2008 and 2009 season, and should have a “three-peat” performance in 2010. TCU transfer Andon Mitchell does not have outdoor eligibility, but will be a factor during the indoor campaign. The former Horned Frog captured All-American honors and four Mountain West Conference championships during his time in Fort Worth. The long sprints group will feature the talents of Jerel Butler, who missed qualifying for regionals in the 400 meter dash last season by less than half a second. George Cunningham will be a big boost to the Lions in the indoor season, but does not have outdoor eligibility left. Both Butler and Cunningham could score in 400 meter dash and 4x400 meter relay. Judith Schultheis returns to the Southeastern women’s track team after competing unattached in 2009, and immediately steps back in the role of top hurdler for the Lady Lions. Her primary focus will be the 60 meter hurdles, but she’ll also join the 4x400 meter relay team. Erika Payton should also be a big contributor for the Green and Gold. She scored last year in the 200 meter dash at the

Jumps On the men’s side, two-time Southland Conference champion Michael Rheams looks to add even more hardware to his trophy case. This solid veteran won the outdoor triple jump title in 2008 and followed that up with an indoor long jump victory in 2009. Sophomore Kovey Simmons has a great shot to lead the SLC in vertical jumps. He took fifth place in the outdoor championships last season, despite the meet being his first performance of the season due to injury. He also posted a top ten finish in the pole vault at the indoor championships. Michelle Ogashi is Southeastern’s top returning female in the long and triple jump. She was consistent as a freshman and should be in a position to be on the podium at the conference championships as a sophomore.

Throws Adonson Shallow may be the best allaround thrower in the country, with amazing skills in shot put, discus, hammer, weight throw and javelin. He has already assured his spot in Southeastern lore with record-breaking throws in the

hammer, weight throw and indoor shot. In discus, he advanced to the NCAA National Championships in 2009, placing 11th. Faisal Muhammad is also back for 2010. He set the school record in the weight throw early in the indoor campaign last year, only to see it broken by Shallow later. The two very well may continue to trade places at the top of the all-time list. Kyle Francis also has a chance to score in weight throw at the indoor championships to close out his Southeastern career. Yvette Schubert looks to return to the form that saw her capture the 2008 Southland Conference outdoor title in javelin. She took sixth place season, and also put together a top ten performance at the Texas Relays.

Chris Robinson looks to break back into the top ten in 2010. He placed ninth in decathlon at the 2008 conference meet, but dropped to 12th place last year.

Schedule Southeastern’s schedule will not take the Lions and Lady Lions to all corners of the country, but that won’t keep them from competing against the nation’s best teams. The Green and Gold will line up vs. Olympians and national champions on a regular basis. Highlights include several visits to Baton Rouge for meets at LSU, plus an appearance at the Texas Relays, arguably the finest collegiate track meet in the United States.

Renada Living saw consistent improvement in hammer throw throughout the 2009 outdoor season. Amber Thomas and Shalicia Rochon also have opportunities to break through at the college level.

This set-up will give Southeastern’s competitors a chance to be real student-athletes. Not being on long road trips every weekend, they’ll be able to have a life outside of athletics and further enjoy their college experience.

Combined Events

The Lions and Lady Lions hope there is one very long trip, though. By qualifying for the NCAA Division I National Championships, Southeastern would go to historic Hayward Field, home of the University of Oregon.

Senior Cory Roberts looks to close out an amazing career with the Lions. He was the 2009 Southland Conference outdoor decathlon champion, setting a school record

in the process with 7,451 points. Roberts ended the year with a 19th place finish at the NCAA National Championships.

n his eighth season as Southeastern Louisiana’s track and field coach, Sean Brady led the men’s team to its first Southland Conference championship. The former Southeastern pole vaulter has built the Lions and Lady Lions into a force in the highly competitive league and expects continued success in 2010. Shortly after winning the conference title, Brady made program history once again as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named him the 2009 South Central Region Co-Men’s Head Coach of the Year, sharing the award with Chris Bucknam, head coach of the 2009 SEC champion and traditional national powerhouse program at the University of Arkansas. The national honor came on the heels of being named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year. “I’m very honored to receive this award,” Brady said. “It’s nice to see our program mentioned with some of the best in the nation. However, this award is not about a head guy. This is a credit to the effort our kids put in all year long and a credit to the support our administration and university has given us. Without that, something like this wouldn’t be possible. So I’m happy that our program has put itself in a position to get itself mentioned with one of the best programs in the nation.”

Brady’s main duties include overseeing the Southeastern sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams; a group that broke three school records and saw five NCAA Mideast Regional qualifiers during the course of the 2009 season. In total, the Alexandria native oversaw a team that produced ten student-athletes that qualified for NCAA postseason competition in 15 different events. Brady’s 2009 Lions also produced the SLC Athlete of the Year (sophomore distance runner Henry Rop) and Outstanding Field Performer of the Year (junior thrower Adonson Shallow). Under the tutelage of Brady and his staff, Southeastern student athletes have constantly attacked the school record books, setting more than 50 standards since 2002. In the past eight seasons, 81 student-athletes have qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regionals, 17 student-athletes have competed in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with four Lions earning All-America honors and Janice Ezegbunum earning Academic All-America honors. Twenty six student-athletes have captured Southland Conference individual championships. Brady began his college coaching career as a volunteer assistant at LSU, where he served two seasons under head coach Pat Henry. During his tenure in Baton Rouge,

2009-10 Southeastern Track and Field

Brady coached several world class sprinters and eventual professional jumpers on the men’s squad while assisting with meet preparation. After two seasons with the Tigers, Brady moved to Utah State in 1998 where he worked as an assistant and coached a pair of Big West Conference championship teams and developed a pair of Aggie school record holders. Prior to his coaching career, Brady proved to be a standout studentathlete. The Alexandria native attended Northwestern State for one year where he played wide receiver for the Demon football team, before transferring to Southeastern. Brady spent three years in Hammond competing in the pole vault and earned a personal-best mark of 16 feet-5 inches as a senior. After earning his degree in Kinesiology at Southeastern in 1994, Brady went on and earned his Post Graduate Degree from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland where he taught athletics classes in the sports science curriculum and trained professional athletes. Brady graduated from Alexandria Senior High School where he was a district and regional champion in the pole vault. The son of James and Karen Brady, both Southeastern alums, Sean Brady holds certification from USA Track and Field as a Level I and II coach.

uring his 16 year coaching career, Michael Bartolina has established himself as one of the premier jumps and combined event coaches in the nation. The 2009-10 campaign will see Bartolina enter his fifth season tutoring the Lions’ and Lady Lions’ jumping and combined event athletes. Before joining the Southeastern coaching staff, Bartolina spent three years as National Equipment Manager for First to the Finish - the second largest track and field supply company in the United States. Prior to his time in the private sector, Bartolina spent seven seasons coaching at the collegiate level – most recently as assistant track coach at McNeese State University. Before taking the job at McNeese, Bartolina served as head coach at Ranger Junior College

(Texas) where he led the team to three topthree finishes in JUCO National Meets. Bartolina began his college coaching career in 1992-93 at Southeastern where he served as a graduate assistant and coached current Southeastern head coach Sean Brady. Since joining the Lions’ track program, Bartolina’s athletes have produced twelve regional performances, one national qualifying mark and an All-America honoree (Avery Sorapuru: 2006 Men’s Long Jump). In total, Bartolina’s collegiate athletes have earned 17 All-Southland Conference awards, six Southland Conference championships, 12 NCAA Regional Championship berths, three NCAA National Championship berths, and one All-America award. Bartolina is also one of the most sought after coaches in the professional track and field

community, coaching at least one Olympian in the past three summer games and developing Estonian heptathlete Kristian Rahnu who claimed fourth place at the 2006 World Championships. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Bartolina was represented by male pole vaulter Jure Rovan of Slovenia as well as female pole vaulter Erica Bartolina of the United States. Bartolina holds USA Track and Field Level II coaching certifications in the jumps and multievents. After competing in the pole vault for the Oklahoma State track and field team, he completed both his BS and MA degrees at The University of Central Oklahoma. A native of Edmund, Oklahoma, Bartolina is married to Erica (Boren) Bartolina. He has one son, Ethan (10).

rian Mondschein begins his third season as an assistant coach with the Southeastern Louisiana track and field program after a fourteen year run at Division II Kutztown (Pa.) University. Mondschein’s main responsibilities include working with the Lions’ throwers and heptathletes. “Brian brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our teams on top of being a great coach and person,” head coach Sean Brady said. “I believe he will be able to recruit some athletes from areas regionally and nationally where we have not recruited before. He’s a great coach with a lot of experience.” While at Kutztown, Mondschein helped turn the Golden Bears track and field program into a powerhouse in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. In 14 years at Kutztown, Mondschein’s squad collected 18 conference championships, produced 90 individual conference champions, 38 Division II All-Americans, four Academic All-Americans and

two PSAC scholar athletes of the year. Prior to his time at Kutztown, Mondschein served as an assistant with the University of Virginia track and field program from 1987 to 1992. While at Virginia, Mondschein helped the Cavaliers to their best conference finish in the 1990’s when the men’s squad finished fourth in indoors and outdoors and the women’s team claimed third overall at the ACC outdoor meet. During his time at Virginia, Mondschein coached 12 All-ACC athletes and four All-Americans. From 1984-1987, Mondschein served as an assistant coach at Rice where he worked with the men’s field events, combined events and hurdles as well as the women’s javelin, hurdles and combined events. Mondschein began his coaching career in 1980 at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif. and coached jumpers, hurdlers, sprinters and combined events for both men’s and women’s teams.

Mondschein turned in a stellar career as a student athlete at the University of Washington where he earned All-America honors by finishing seventh in the decathlon at the 1977 NCAA Championships. During his freshman campaign in 1973, Mondschein was part of a U.S. Junior 4x400m relay team that posted a then-junior world record. Athletic History

S

outheastern Louisiana University’s storied athletic history dates back over three-quarters of a century. Now, 15 intercollegiate sports strong, with nearly 330 student-athletes, the Lions are set to enter their 12th year of Southland Conference membership poised for academic and competitive growth into the next century. Southeastern Louisiana University Athletics competes at the Division I level as a member of the NCAA and the Southland Conference (SLC) and sponsors 15 varsity teams - eight women’s and seven men’s. For women, Southeastern sponsors soccer, volleyball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball, softball and tennis. Men’s athletics sponsored are football, basketball, baseball, golf, cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. Since joining the Southland Conference in the 1997-98 year, Southeastern has won 21 conference championships, including women’s soccer, women’s tennis and men’s outdoor track and field in just the past two years. Southeastern’s athletic history has many notable chapters including winning national

championships in men’s outdoor track in 1975 and women’s basketball in 1976-77. Southeastern’s 1954 undefeated football team is well remembered as one of the finest in the school’s 60-year gridiron annals, and many former football players have gone on to distinguished careers in the NFL. The 1975 baseball team had a glorious year when they advanced to the Division II College World Series, finishing third in the nation. Today, Southeastern strives to be the best among its peers in the SLC and sister institutions in the proud state of Louisiana. It has posted its best marks in the Men’s All Sports Standings, winning the trophy for the first time after the 2008-09 year, and has led all Louisiana institutions in the Commissioners’ Cup standings the past three years. Southland Conference championships offer Southeastern automatic bids to NCAA postseason play in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, women’s soccer and men’s golf. The school has earned five berths since joining the league, with the latest coming in 2009 with the women's soccer

team claiming its first-ever berth in the NCAA Championships. Southeastern also made its mark in postseason NCAA Championship competition, with the golf team placing 23rd in the nation in 1998’s championship tournament, along with qualifying four golfers for the NCAA championship tournament four times and advancing to the NCAA regionals in 2000 and 2007; with the baseball team playing in two NCAA championship regionals in the 1990s; qualifying numerous individuals for the NCAA Championship indoor and outdoor track meets and advancing student-athletes in cross country. Southeastern student-athletes have been named All-Americans in golf and men’s and women’s track and field, and have garnered numerous award in the Southland and the state of Louisiana. Southeastern student-athletes have also earned Academic All-American recognition; most recently in softball, while four individuals were named the Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year in the 2007-08 Academic Year.

S

outheastern is the third largest university in Louisiana, offering 70 undergraduate and graduate degree programs that are nationally accredited. Southeastern now offers five new post-graduate degree programs, including the university’s first doctoral program in Educational Leadership and unique master’s degree programs in Integrated Science and Technology, Organizational Communication, Applied Sociology, and the Master of Arts in Teaching. Our classes are small in size, interaction is high, and faculty, not graduate students, teach 99 percent of our classes. Southeastern also is one of the major providers of distance education among state universities. Our main campus and satellite centers in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany and Livingston parishes are equipped to handle e-learning activities, and students have access to computer labs in classroom buildings, residence halls, the War Memorial Student Union and the Sims Memorial Library. A Student Help Desk is available by phone, and Student Productivity Services allows students to check out laptops, external drives, digital cameras, and other equipment. The Southeastern Channel, Southeastern’s education access cable channel operated in cooperation with Charter Communications and airing in several area parishes, offers original programming and telecourses that can be taken for college credit. Southeastern’s Honors program offers an alternative academic track in all departments and majors, and our Study Abroad program allows our students to explore the globe.

Southeastern provides the opportunity for all its students to be successful in whatever they choose to do. Internships, undergraduate research opportunities and service learning programs help prepare students with real-world learning experiences. Southeastern Alumni are successful in all areas of business, government, and entertainment. Internationally and nationally recognized Southeastern alumni include ABC “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts, U.S. Federal Judge James Brady, and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Russell Carollo. Founded in 1925, Southeastern’s campus and facilities have grown to meet the needs of its students in today’s technological environment. In recent years, Southeastern has undergone a $140 million construction program that has transformed the campus, including new residential facilities, classroom and lab buildings, and a student activity center. Yet our campus still maintains its southern Louisiana charm, nestled in ancient oaks, pines, magnolias and camellias. Southeastern’s Turtle Cove Environmental Research Center, located at Pass Manchac, offers students an ideal facility for wetlands research. In recent years, Southeastern has received nearly $3 million in federal funds to enhance environmental research programs at the facility. Another important benefit provided by Southeastern is our textbook rental system. Southeastern is the only university in Louisiana, and one of just a few in the nation where you can rent, not buy, your textbooks. At Southeastern, you pay a small rental fee at the beginning of the semester, and simply return your

books at the end. You will still have to purchase some paperbacks and workbooks, but you’ll save a bundle in comparison to buying all your textbooks and then selling them back at a fraction of their cost. Southeastern provides a wide range of health services on campus. Southeastern’s Health Center has full-time nurses Monday through Friday for minor incidents, and if your case is a bit more serious, physicians make “campus calls” every afternoon to diagnose and treat minor illnesses. Our Counseling Center provides individual or group counseling to help our students to get back up when stressful times in college or life in general gets them down. Career Services provides career and educational counseling, help in choosing a major and finding a job. Southeastern’s intramural and recreation program includes activities from group fitness programs to flag football. Tennis courts, a swimming pool and Southeastern’s new 85,000 square foot facility, the Claude B. Pennington Jr. Student Activity Center, also provide students plenty of other opportunities to stay fit and healthy. With more then 80 organizations, every Southeastern student can find a niche. Our school newspaper, The Lion’s Roar, and our yearbook, Le Souvenir, welcome students interested in journalism. KSLU, Southeastern’s radio station and the Southeastern Channel provide experience for students who want to go on the air, just for fun or for on-the-job-training. Dynamic organizations such as the Campus Activities Board and Residential Services sponsor fun events like Gumbo Ya-Ya serving up tons of gumbo in the fall.

art Bellairs, former director of intercollegiate athletics at Savannah State University in Savannah, Ga., and a senior athletics administrator at Virginia Military Institute was named the 15th Director of Athletics at Southeastern on Nov. 24, 2009. Bellairs succeeds Joel Erdmann, who accepted a similar position at the University of South Alabama in August. Southeastern men’s golf coach Tim Baldwin has served as interim director since Erdmann’s departure. “We are excited to welcome Bart Bellairs to our staff,” said President John L. Crain. “He has a broad range of accomplishments in athletic administration and shares Southeastern’s focus on the ‘student’ part of the student-athlete equation. He has a proven track record in inspiring his athletes and staff to achieve their full potential, whether in the classroom or in athletic competition. And he has experience in handling marketing, promotion, fundraising and budgetary issues, important skills in these days of tightened finances.” “I liked what I saw at Southeastern from the start but when my wife Jacki

and I met the people, we knew we had found a home,” Bellairs said. “My whole life I have spent time in college towns; growing up, as a coach, and as an administrator, and I have been blessed by living in some great places. When I started preparing for the interview I was very impressed with the campus and the attention Southeastern paid to supporting the students; but when I met the people -- the faculty, coaches, and members of the community – I wanted to be a part of it.” At Southeastern, Bellairs will oversee 15 NCAA Division I affiliated programs that compete in the Southland Conference. Since joining the Southland in 1997, the Lions have captured 21 regular-season or tournament championships, including four regular-season titles in women’s soccer, three in women’s tennis, two in men’s basketball and two in men’s golf. Southeastern also claimed the Southland Men’s All-Sports Trophy in 2008-09, highlighted by the 2009 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field championship with the women’s soccer team earning its first-ever berth to the NCAA Championships. Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008. There he implemented an academics success plan that included an academic “road map” for each student-athlete from registration to graduation. He developed a Title IX/Gender Equity program that involved reworking the athletic budget to resolve long-time problems with staffing, facilities and scholarships. During his tenure at Savannah State, football, men’s basketball, soft-

ball and women’s volleyball teams all saw significant improvement in seasonal wins. Prior to joining Savannah State, Bellairs served as senior associate director of intercollegiate athletics from 2005 to 2008 and head basketball coach from 1993 to 2005 at VMI in Lexington, Va. Responsibilities included marketing and promotions, ticket operations, management of the licensing program and serving as director for all key athletic facilities. There he created new pricing strategies, athletic department promotions and new revenue streams. As head basketball coach, he was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year, the Virginia Coach of the Year and the Sports Illustrated Unknown Coach of the Year. Bellairs also served as assistant basketball coach at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. from 1988 to 1993, where his teams saw one NCAA tournament appearance and five NIT appearances. He was also an assistant basketball coach at the University of Massachusetts (1986-1988) and assistant basketball coach at the University of Maryland (1984-1986). Plus, he served as head basketball coach, head cross country coach and assistant baseball coach at Wilkes College in Wilkes Barre, Pa. (1983-1985). He holds a master of science degree in physical education and athletics administration from Western Illinois University and a bachelor of arts degree in sociology/social work from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. Bellairs and his wife Jacki have five children.
