Discover... Whether you live here, are thinking about moving here, or just visiting, we’re excited to share with you all the reasons why we think DeSoto County is a special place to be. DeSoto County’s roots date as far back as February 9, 1836 when the county was established. We’re named in honor of Hernando de DeSoto, believed to be the first European explorer to discover the Mississippi River in 1541. We’re a community rich in history and new beginnings. We’ve been thriving dairy farmers making us leading dairy county of Mississippi in the 1960’s. And let’s not forget our musical roots... some of history’s best musicians and alike have called DeSoto County home. Times haven’t always been rosie for us, we’ve seen our hardships, too. We’ve endured the great tragedies of war and an epidemic illness (yellow fever) that nearly wiped out the population of the county seat, Hernando, in 1878. We survived the housing market crash of 2008, but through all of that we kept our chins up and kept moving forward. Today we’re a diverse community rooted on a strong foundation of educators, leaders, artists, and forward thinkers. We pride ourselves on our hospitality and looking after our neighbors. The DeSoto Times Tribune Family has been around for a long time. Our roots date back to 1839 when we were known as The Hernando Free Press and we’re quite proud to have served this community for almost 180 years. It’s our hope that the following pages will inspire you to learn more about our rich history, play in our parks, and enjoy all of the many other treasures we have to share with you. PAST

! BLUES TRAIL MARKERS: NO SOUND LIKE MISSISSISSIPPI SOUND

DeSoto Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rich musical history can be heard in the crooked harmonica tunes of famous bluesman Big Walter Horton, a former Horn Lake resident. Another stop on the DeSoto County "Who's Who" tour includes the grave of Memphis Minnie, also known as Lizzie "The Kid" Douglass, who was the first woman ever to play an electric guitar and popularized female blues music until her death in 1973. She is buried at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Walls. That legendary musical history continues into the 21st Century with the Grammy nominated North Mississippi All-Stars. The Hernando High School graduates, Luther and Cody Dickinson and fellow classmate Chris Chew, have blazed a trail of their own, no doubt influenced by the late Jim Dickinson, collaborator with Bob Dylan and producer of many hit records.

! A “KILLER” HOME

An entertainer who still calls DeSoto County home, singer and rock and roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis still lives near his sprawling ranch off Malone Road. He moved out of the home in order to accommodate tours. Lewis purchased the home in 1973. The home, with a piano-shaped swimming pool, is now open to the public. Lewis, 81, still tours internationally and plays locally at Tunica casinos and private events. Paul Wood, guitarist for the late John Lee Hooker's band, has also called DeSoto County home.

! A LIVING LEGEND

Civil Rights pioneer James Howard Meredith had sought to integrate the University of Mississippi. After being rebuffed at least twice — once in Jackson and in Oxford — it took a horde of U.S. marshals, the United States Attorney General and an American President, John F. Kennedy, to ensure that Meredith could attend Ole Miss. Meredith's stop in Hernando would galvanize a nation and a people. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would go on to continue Meredith's march in Hernando to the state capital in Jackson as a fraught nation and a turbulent world held its breath.

The Hernando Farmers Market is held each Saturday starting the end of April through October. The market, which features dozens of local vendors, is the top-rated farmers market in Mississippi and the 13th best farmers market in the nation. With baked goods, crafts and farm fresh vegetables and canned goods, the farmers market is a real crowd-pleaser.

CIRCLE G: THE KINGâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S MARITAL HOME As the late music legend Elvis Presley considered the next step in his career during the late 1960s and needed some time to get away from the limelight, Elvis would head south of Graceland to his Circle G Ranch in Horn Lake. The ranch, which Presley bought in 1967 and then sold just a few years later, is now the subject of a group of investors who want to transform the property into a destination location and historical site.

Basketball comes to Southaven with the Memphis Hustle, the NBA G-League affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies. Each year, a team of NBA hopefuls play and showcase their talents exclusively at the Landers Center.

! DESOTO ARTS COUNCIL

The DeSoto Arts Council opened its new headquarters in 2017 to much fanfare as artists, patrons and visitors alike toured the renovated former city hall building, with a style that dates back to the ArtDeco period of the 1940s. Paintings and photographs of Mid-South scenes created by local artists are on display and available for purchase year-round.

BANKPLUS AMPHITHEATER AT SNOWDEN GROVE This 4,000-seat outdoor concert venue in Southaven has played host to a wide range of musical acts since opening in 2006, including country megastars like Eric Church, Brantley Gilbert and Lynyrnd Skynyrd, as well as modern rock bands like Velvet Revolver, Blink 182, and Seether.

LANDERS CENTER This 8,400-seat Southaven landmark is a multi-purpose arena that showcases sporting events, concerts, and conventions. This venue plays host the the Memphis Hustle basketball team.

! HERNANDO DESOTO RIVER PARK

The newly-refurbished Hernando DeSoto River Park is named for the legendary Spanish explorer who was the first European to glimpse the mighty waterway back in 1540. An expansion including a three-mile hiking and walking trail that has paths for horseback riding and bicyclists is expected to be completed sometime in 2019.

Hernando's Edward Pidgeon Skatepark continues its cruise to region-wide credibility among skate enthusiasts with amateur tournaments and free lessons.

Coldwater River Nature Conservancy should not be missed! The park offers a variety of multipurpose trails and green space suitable for hiking, jogging, walking, running, equestrian use, canoeing and kayaking and biking.

MID-SOUTH ICE HOUSE The Mid-South Ice House provides a quartet of skating rinks and has become particularly attractive to fledgling hockey programs, both from college and high school. Ole Miss and Memphis club hockey teams use the facility for home games, and Mississippi State also uses the facility to practice.

From winding trails that wander through woods and others that meander along bluffs, DeSoto County has several bicycle and mountain bike trails suitable for beginners to advanced cycle enthusiasts.

SPORTSPLEXES Desoto County offers several state-of-the art sports complexes for all types of sports and ages.

Disc Golf is rapidly becoming the fun, laid back sport of weekend warriors turned athletes. Competition is friendly but fierce and DeSoto County has several courses to choose from.

A: Hernando has been able to maintain its small town feel even though it's part of one of the fastest growing counties in Mississippi. Q: What is your favorite place or special spot in your city that holds fond memories? A: The Court House Square has always been a favorite. It has continued to be a gathering place for the young and old, a place to see old friends and forge new friendships. A: During the 1940’s up to the 1970’s when Hernando was a much smaller community, we had three new car dealerships, all owned by women. Q: What would you change about your city and why? A: Improve infrastructure. It’s been difficult to keep up at the rate we’ve grown over the past 20-plus years. Q: What's your proudest accomplishment as mayor? Inspired by former Mayor Milton Nichols, former Fire Chief/Alderman Perry Lee Bowlan and my father Scotty Phillips who was an Alderman for a couple of terms. A: Horn Lake continues to have a "small town" feel to it which encourages each citizen to be interested and willing to contribute to our community. Q: What is your favorite place or special spot in your city that holds fond memories? A: The area along the railroad track. I was raised on the corner of East Center Street and Goodman Road. The school was just a few hundred yards from our home which meant I walked to school. In those days the school was the center of the community. There were no cell phones, computers, or hundreds of tv channels. It gave the people the opportunity to gather and socialize. Q: If you had a chance to bring your city something it does not presently have, what would that be and why? A: Of course more businesses and more jobs. One day I hope to see a walking trail along the several hundred acres the city owns along Horn Lake Creek. Q: What's one interesting fact about your city that most people would be surprised to learn? A: Horn Lake is ranked in the top ten safest cities in Mississippi. Q: What would you change about your city and why? A: We go back to more businesses and jobs. We are for-

tunate to have citizens who want to have a clean and safe city. Q: What's your proudest accomplishment as mayor? A: In the past few years more businesses have located in Horn Lake, and the city is much cleaner. These are due to our citizens and the excellent people serving them in each department. Q: If you could change one thing in the world what would it be? A: In the United States we need to be more patriotic and less angry. Unfortunately we now have groups that encourage division. There seems to be a feeling among many that the results of elections do not matter if their candidate loses. We must learn to be more civil in our discussions when we are seeking solutions. Q: How do you spend your free time when you're not working? A: As I have aged, I can no longer do Civil War re-enacting, which was truly enjoyable and educational. I still enjoy rabbit hunting with my friends who are kind enough to invite me. I can no longer hunt all day; three to four hours is now my limit. Model trains and reading provide me with enjoyment most of the time.

Q&A with SOUTHAVEN MAYOR

DARREN MUSSELWHITE Q: What makes your city special? A: Southaven is special because we have been able to achieve the rare combination of having big-city amenities without losing the small-town feel. Still, Southaven is not great because of any one thing. We do many things well and have all the key components of a great place to live. We have all of the following priorities for success: Public Safety, Geographic Location, Transportation Infrastructure, Qualified Workforce, Schools, Healthcare, Affordable Housing Options, Quality of Life, Beautification, Recreational Options.

Q: What's one interesting fact about your city that most people would be surprised to learn? A: Some people assume because we are the largest city in DeSoto County that we have the highest cost of living. This is not true. Southaven has the fourth-highest property tax rate for entities in Desoto County and has not had a property ad valorem tax change since 2009. The cost of car tags is not determined by the City, nor is the cost of moving traffic violations since the majority of this fine goes to the state.

Q: What is your favorite place or special spot in your city that holds fond memories? A: The Colonial Hills area because I grew up there and played on all of those streets. I spent so much time as a kid at Cherry Valley Park and just ride through there when no one is there sometimes to reminisce.

Q: What would you change about your city and why? A: I would change the aesthetic appeal and am currently trying to do that. Southaven was not a visibly-attractive place as our city developed well from a practical standpoint, but not from a quality standpoint. There is a fine line between mediocrity and excellence and I want everything to be excellent in Southaven.

Q: If you had a chance to bring your city something it does not presently have, what would that be and why? A: We're doing that now. Southaven needs more entertainment options that people have left us for in the past moving to Memphis, Nashville, Atlanta, etc. Silo Square will bring a traditional town square that will function as the center of an entertainment area with more restaurant options and fun events such as special markets, holiday events, and reasons for gatherings.

Q: What's your proudest accomplishment as mayor? A: I know that my purpose in 2013 was to restore integrity to the City's operations and end the dirty political relationships and cronyism that hurt our city. I did that and have also played a big part in difficult and disciplined decisions, in the face of criticism, that will put Southaven in a tremendously healthy financial position that will pay dividends to the City for many years after I am gone.

A: The Sacred Heart League has been a resident of Walls for many years and back in the 60s, it raised funds by creating the Jesus statue that could be found on dash boards across America. A: The accessibility and availability of more community recreational areas such as parks and walking trails so that we could encourage and promote more community activities.

Q: How do you spend your free time when you're not working? A: I love to travel so I take very opportunity to do that, but most of my time is spent with my grandchildren. Faith ! HISTORY OF DESOTO COUNTY RELIGION

Colonial French settlers brought Christianity into the lands that are now the state of Mississippi in the 1600’s. Throughout the period of French rule and the period of Spanish dominion that followed, Roman Catholicism was the principal religion. Once Mississippi passed into American hands and the statehood of Mississippi was achieved in 1817, a new period of religious history began. Religion at this time was marked not by state control but by the supremely American concept of freedom to choose one's religion. Mississippi was attracting Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians, and other Protestant evangelical faiths at a remarkable pace. Today, the faith community in DeSoto County has an estimated number of 31 different religions and over 200 congregations within those religious practices.

! Now home to Crosspointe Church, this was the first First Presbyterian Church of Hernando, which dates back to the 1878’s. The structure has maintained most of its original appearance, including the walnut balustrades and pews. During The Hernando Epidemic (yellow fever) of 1878, the church assisted the ill which killed almost half of the city’s inhabitants in six weeks.

! Hernando was once known as the “Marrying Capital” in the country. People poured into the county to get married at the courthouse for its quickie marriages performed when there was no waiting period. In 1957, more than 62,000 licenses were issued and at its peak, the DeSoto County Circuit Court Clerk’s office issued 144 licenses in a single day- at the time the population in Hernando was roughly around 1500. This ended on June 29, 1958, after the state legislature passed a blood test and three day waiting period law. ! K.J. Wright, a graduate of Olive Branch High School, was drafted into the NFL by the Seattle Seahawks in 2011. Wright was part of the 2014 Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks team as a starting linebacker. In 2017, he received an overall grade of 82 and Pro Football Focus ranked him 19th among all linebackers. K.J. is still an active player with the Seattle Seahawks. ! John Grisham’s first novel, A Time to Kill, was inspired by a trial he witnessed at the courthouse in Hernando. ! Melissa Cookston, born and raised in the Mississippi Delta, is a seven-time world barbecue champion making her the “Winningest” woman in BBQ. Melissa lives in DeSoto County and owns two area restaurants, Memphis BBQ Company and STEAK by Melissa. ! Ricky Stenhouse Jr., raised in Olive Branch, was the first Mississippi driver to attempt a full-time schedule since Lake Speed in 1997. In 2017, he was ranked 13th and currently competes full-time in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, driving the No. 17 Ford Fusion for Roush Fenway Racing.
