PLAY IN THE ZONE, Pro’s -vs- Amateurs in Orlando ”Everyone here keeps asking if these pro players on the posters are really coming and we keep having to tell them yes. Our customers are really excited and amazed”, said Bobby Appadu, GM of Corner Pockets. Newly owned and managed Corner Pocket Billiards in Orlando will host the Poison Orlando Women’s 10Ball and the Ozone Billiards Orlando Open on April 1719,2009. “This establishment has been around for almost 25 years, so as new owners it’s important for us to promote new changes for new times. We want good players to feel welcomed, and for recreation players to have a safe playing environment. With the help of Dragon Promotions, we feel confident their programs can create more interest and a loyal clientele vital for independent room owners”, said Tesh Patel, Owner of Corner Pockets. Dragon Promotions will be helping the host room promote the event in launching new upcoming programs and promotions. The weekend event will kickoff with a mini-tournament sponsored by Ozone Billiards. All three events will be handicapped, created so that any player can win. “Though my schedule is extremely hectic, I wanted to help the local billiard industry here in Orlando. Corner Pockets is under new ownership trying to find their way around in a tough economy. DP has vast knowledge in the billiard business and with simple but effective programs, we feel we can create a template for success for room owners that will have a positive trickle effect on the billiard companies and manufacturers. In my opinion, grass roots will play a vital role for the future”, explained Charlie Williams of Dragon Promotions. Lending their talents to the cause will be 2x World Champion Thorsten Hohmann of Germany, Korea National Champion and WPBA #5 Yu Ram Cha, USA Top 5 Ranked Charlie Williams, Ultimate Trickshot Finalist Shanelle Loraine, and Filipino amateur newbie Zarah Delrosario. The event will have a modest 1st place guarantee of $400 for the winner of the Poison Women’s 10Ball, $400 1st Place for the Ozone Billiards Orlando Open, and $200 for the mini-tournament. Hohmann will also do a 3 hour teaching clinic for anybody who wants to learn billiards. The class is scheduled for Saturday April 18 at 8pm-11pm and will be limited to 8 students at a low cost of $75 per student. The students will be critiqued on their form, learn drills, and be able to ask the World Champion any questions on pool. Email propoolschool@gmail.com

INSTRUCTION Object ball frozen to cushion

Pocket Billiards Instructional Articles and Videos.... Vergottini’s Blog Eight-Ball Nine-Ball One-Pocket Straight Pool

In this shot, the object ball is frozen to the rail and you have a very steep angle with the cue ball.

The secret to making these kinds of cut shots is to actually aim to miss, just a little, and play the cue ball into the rail first with low english in the direction of the object ball. The cue ball will rebound off the cushion and into the object ball to make it into the corner pocket. This is actually much easier to execute than to try to cut the ball in. Try it as shown. As you get more proficient, move the object ball further down the rail until you reach a point of difficulty or low proficiency that would not benefit you in a game. Practice this shot and know you percentage for making it one diamond out from the pocket, 1.5 diamonds out, 2 diamonds out, etc. That way, when it comes up in a game, you will know whether or not you should shoot it, or play a safe instead.

Professional Billiard Player: Larry “The Truth” Nevel

in Atlanta Georgia played host to the season opener of the ever Expanding Seminole Pro Tour. For the past two years this ten ball tour, formerly known as the Florida Pro Tour, has been expanding outward to different states, with this season including stops not only in Atlanta, but also in North Carolina and New York. The season opener was a concentration of some of the finest cueists the US has to offer. Such talents as Earl “The Pearl” Strickland, Corey Deuel, John Schmidt, Gabe Owen, Stevie Moore, Mike Davis, and Ronnie Wiseman as well as strong shortstops including Atlanta’s Paul Song. Day two of the tournament saw some great matches. At one point there were four US Open champions playing at the same time; to the delight of the spectators who were overjoyed at the prospect of watching some world class pool. The feature matchup for day two pitted none other than Earl Strickland against Seminole sponsored Corey Deuel. Deuel seemed to have been pushed to the limit all tournament long surviving a close 7-5 victory over Raymond Linares; then coming up short against very capable local Mitch Yarborough 7-6. Corey missed the case 10 ball and was sent to the 1 loss side where his final test would be against 5 time US Open champion Earl Strickland. This match up was an exhibition of firepower as Corey shot out to a 4-0 lead. The usually boisterous Earl quickly reverted to a state of utmost concentration and did not let Deuel back to the table until he was in a safety and only leading by one game at 4-3. Strickland was really showing his prowess making sloppy layouts look like roadmaps and continued to put the pressure on Corey by taking a 5-4 lead. Deuel responded and captured the next two games and was the first man on the hill. Strickland quickly joined Mr. Deuel on the hill. The players would stretch the match to its capacity as the race to 7 would be decided by a single game. Now we all know that the tournament atmosphere can provide electricity and color to any venue, especially when two combatants of this caliber enter the arena. This was no different and in this match, in the Hill-Hill game those who were lucky enough to be spectators witnessed what many believed to be the moment of the tournament. Strickland was at the table and got position against the side rail straight in on the seven ball. His cueing was slightly elevated seeing as there was a ball underneath him. As he got down to shoot he jumped right back up and started chalking his cue very thoroughly. As he turned the cue on the chalk, with a look of mingled intensity and amusement, he delivered one of the best one liners I’ve ever heard… “The only thing in the world that can save you now, is a mis-cue!” Spits of laughter popped up from around the crowd as they restrained themselves so as not to disturb “The Pearl”. He pocketed the final four balls and won the match to uproarious applause. On the final day the cream really did rise to the top. In the final 8 were six very strong pros and two locals who were showing that they had what it took to play with the best. Paul Song was the first shortstop eliminated as he succumbed to Strickland 8-5 finishing in 7th place. Mitch Yarborough was really raising some eyebrows as he beat his share of big names and bagged a very impressive 4th place prize.

Willard’s Cue Tip Shaper Meets Needto Re-shape Cue Tips Willard’s Cue Products is famous for its Cue Tip Shaper. Here’s why: Over time, a cue tip can flatten with use. When the tip is improperly shaped, the angle at which the ball leaves the tip will no longer be true and your aim will be adversely affected. The human eye cannot see the precise curvature of the cue tip that is necessary for accurate shots. Willard’s dual-featured cue tip shaper provides both the carbide grit shaping device and a precision gauge in a single convenient tool for correctly-shaped tips every time! A properly-shaped cue tip gives you the precisely-curved striking surface necessary to hit the ball accurately for each shot.

America’s #1 Cue Shaper and Scuffer

Dealer Inquiries Invited. 1-888-CUECUBE CUE CUBE CORPORATION

Manufacurer and Distributor of Quality Billiard Accessories

WHO WE ARE Like many tip tools and cue accessories, the Cue Cube was made by someone who wanted a tool for themselves. Others in their local poolroom wanted one and it turned into a business. In 1982 the “company” was purchased and at the suggestion of some pro players the curvature and grit roughness were modified, though the cube shape and metal base were retained. The Cue Cube Corporation, maker of the “Original Cue Cube” is celebrating its 26th year as one of the premier manufacturers of billiard cue shaping devices in the United States. In fact the trademarked names “Cue Cube” and “Shaft Slicker” are so prevalent throughout the billiard world that, like Scotch brand cellophane tape, or Kleenex tissue, users of tip shapers or maintenance tools tend to refer to all of them as Cue Cubes or Shaft Slickers. The Cue Cube has become one of the most successful and widely-recognized products in the billiard world. Cue Cube Corporation currently distributes its products to countries around the globe. The Shaft Slicker, a treated leather/nylon item for shaft maintenance, was put into production and marketed in the mid-80s and in 1993 the two items were packaged together for the first time as the “Pool Cue Maintenance Kit”. Later developments adapted the Cue Cube for attachment on a key chain plus at least six different colors are now available for the cube bodies. In addition the labels, traditionally silver, have now included a gold edition and a patriotic red, white and blue model. This small “started-in-a-garage” company from Milwaukee, like the little engine that could, is still going strong, with steadily increasing sales year by year. Cue Cube is very proud to have competed successfully in a market with a lot of import competition. They are proud to stamp “MADE IN U.S.A.” on their every product. Thanks to Bruce Venzke and Tom Shaw. The above was excerpted from their articles in Pool and Billiard Magazine. (12-02 & 1-04)

How It Works The Jump Buddy is a sturdy hand-bridge that provides a stable platform for this shot. It can be used as a training aid, or in regular play.

The Jump Buddy provides a stable platform for the bridge hand. It also fits easily over another ball, allowing the player to bring the hand closer to the cue ball. This improves the accuracy of the shot

The Jump Buddy is a handsupporting bridge. It will help you learn to make jump shots, masse’ shots, and support your hand bridging over other balls.

Shots near the rails present additional challenges. If there is not room to use the standard tripod, one of the legs can be replaced with a short “rail leg.” The Jump Buddy includes: The 8-ball tripod with three removable legs, a single shorter rail leg, and the carrying pouch. The Jump-Buddy supports the hand during difficult pool shots, including jump shots and masse shots. Includes carrying bag and instructions. Price: $29.95 Availble from: www.Jump-Buddy.com

About Viking Cue In the early 60’s Viking Cue Mfg., Inc. founder Gordon Hart began making two-piece pool cues in the basement of his poolroom in Stoughton, Wisconsin. Gordon traveled to various tournaments to sell his cues. In a short period of time, Viking cues became popular with many of the top players. Viking was incorporated in 1965. By the late 1960s, Gordon spent more time making cues, so he sold the poolroom and moved the cue business to its present location in Madison, Wisconsin. He expanded production capabilities and began selling cues throughout the United States and abroad. Viking grew steadily through the 1970s and early 1980s. At that time, Gordon’s children, Robin, Barry and Darcy became involved with the business. Then in 1986 the major motion picture, The Color of Money, was released and created a boom in the billiard industry. Sales of Viking cues skyrocketed, and the company experienced phenomenal growth as a result.

By the mid-1990s, Viking hired a full sales staff to handle the needs of their constantly growing list of distributors and dealers throughout the world. At the same time, Robin and Barry took over the day-to-day operations, and granddaughter Shawna became involved with the company. Nancy was very active in the Billiard Congress of America in the 1990’s, serving on its board of directors. Years earlier, she served on the board of the Billiard & Bowling Institute of America, and was their First Female President. In 1994, Gordon was honored with the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Cue Makers Association. Viking is known for its generous support of various tournaments and organizations including Nationally televised events, the Viking Nine Ball Tour, Super Billiards Expo, VNEA, BCA League and National Wheelchair Poolplayer Association Inc. In the 2000’s, Barry became active in the Billiard Congress of America, serving on its board of directors. Grandson Justin joined Viking to continue the tradition of the family business.

As the 1980s came to a close, Gordon began updating machinery and investing in state-of-the-art As one of the oldest manufacturers of cues in equipment to ensure a quality product. Promotional America, Viking has the strictest quality control in efforts increased with an extensive advertising and the industry. The continual upgrading of machinery public relations program coordinated by Gordon’s and superior technology is what makes Viking the top wife, Nancy, which helped make Viking a household cue manufacturer in the industry. Viking lives up to name. Vikings efforts coupled with significant product the expectations of the millions of current and future quality enhancements, positioned the company as a owners of the most critical tool for your game. leader in the billiard industry. Viking Cues are proudly and exclusively made in the U.S.A.

Double Dipping Is The Flavor Of The Week In Blue Fox Viking Billiard Event

The Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour rolled into Virginia the weekend of March 28-29 where Blue Fox Billiards played host to both the Open and Amateur Divisions. The Events drew in players from around the region as the event hosted players from Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia and Georgia. Blue Fox Billiards and The Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour hosted 88 entries, as players battled for their shot at taking home a share of the prize monies up for grabs that weekend. The Viking Cue 9-Ball Open Tour turned out to be full of upsets as local favorites Matt Clatterbuck finished 17-24th and Brandon Shuff finished 5-6th in the tournament. The event would be won by Manuel Chau who worked his way back from the one loss side to the finals to face Justin Daniels from Ohio who had made his way undefeated into the finals but Chau would double dip Daniels to win the Open Division. Chau won set one 9-3 and set two 9-2. The Viking Cue 9-Ball Amateur Tour kicked off on Sunday and with a prize fund of $2000 available. Double dipping would also be the flavor in the Amateur as Ryan Jones and Shawn Toni, both from Maryland, would battle it out for first Toni had made his way thru the top half of the brackets and everyone thought he had this one in the bag until he faced Ryan Jones in finals, who had begin his run in the bottom of the brackets and was sent to the left side of the chart by Toni in the match for the hot seat. Jones came back with a vengeance to the finals where he would defeat Toni in both sets to take the win. Jones won set one 6-3; set two 5-2. Click HERE for complete event coverage.

VirtualTournaments.com is one of the most unique bowling tournaments available anywhere.

Started in September of 2001, we developed the technology to enable bowlers in the US and US Military to compete against each other without leaving their home bowling center. The concept of a virtual tournament is not unique. Even the governing body of bowling, the USBC, recognizes this type of a Tournament as a "Mail-O-Graphic" Tournament (see Rule 302b of the USBC Tournament Rules).

Years ago, "Mail-O-Graphic" type Leagues and Tournaments would mail in their scores. The receiving party would then combine all the information and produce the results. With the onset of the internet, we have taken that same concept, however, we use the internet instead of snail mail. Each week, bowlers from all over the US and (and some overseas Military Leagues) enter our Tournaments. They then send in their scores, and we manually verify all cash winning entries by either calling the League Secretary or Bowling Center. In some cases, we call both to ensure accuracy.

World’s Longest-Running, Largest and Most Prestigious Poker Tournament Set to Run From May 26 - July 15, 2009 The 40th annual World Series of Poker® (WSOP®) — a set of poker tournaments open to anyone 21 years of age or older — will commence Wednesday, May 27 with the first of 57 gold bracelet events, and the next day a special $40,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournament will commemorate the gaming industry’s most illustrious event. The annual poker extravaganza, which dates back to 1970, is televised exclusively on ESPN from the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and consists of a comprehensive slate of the game’s most popular variations. The 40th annual WSOP will conclude with the $10,000 buy-in World Championship No-Limit Hold‘em Main Event which begins play Friday, July 3, 2009 and reaches its final table (nine players) on July 15, 2009, at which time play will be halted. The famed tournament’s culmination will be held with the “November Nine” from November 7-10, 2009, before a live audience with special primetime coverage from ESPN. The landmark WSOP comes on the heels of a record year in 2008, when the WSOP generated the most entries ever (58,720) from the most countries ever (124) that competed for the largest prize pool ever ($180,774,427) while awarding 55 championship gold bracelets, globally recognized as the sport’s top prize. Among the highlights of the 2009 schedule: 57 gold bracelet events over 50 days. A “stimulus special” $1,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament on the opening weekend, May 30-31, 2009, which is anticipated to draw the largest-ever live tournament field outside the Main Event and offer a prize pool approaching $5,000,000. 10 “World Championship” $10,000 buy-in events (“World Championship” refers to tournaments with a buy-in of $10,000 in each of the various disciplines of poker). The third annual $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. tournament, with an enhanced gold bracelet and the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy awarded to the winner. A one-time commemorative gold bracelet event, a $40,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament to help mark the 40th annual WSOP on Thursday, May 28, 2009. Seven open $1500 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournaments, the most popular events in poker. The 3rd annual Ante Up For Africa $5,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em celebrity and charity tourna ent on Thursday, July 2, 2009, (the day before the Main Event begins) featuring the opportunity for anyone age 21 or older to enter and be seated at the same table as A-list celebrities and top poker pros. The Ladies Only No-Limit Hold’em World Championship on Sunday, June 7, 2009, featur ing a $1,000 buy-in and helping to raise awareness for the Nevada Cancer Institute, the official community relations partner of the World Series of Poker. The Seniors Only No-Limit Hold’em World Championship on Monday, June 22, 2009 for all poker enthusiasts 50 years of age or older. The return of the “November Nine” where the nine finalists of the Main Event (July 3-15) return to the Rio on November 7-10, 2009 to vie for the multi-million dollar prize and the title of 2009 World Champion of Poker in front of a live audience with special primetime coverage on ESPN.

“Whether you play poker around the kitchen table or consider yourself a professional, you will find a comfortable seat at the 2009 World Series of Poker,” said Jeffrey Pollack, commissioner of the World Series of Poker. ”This year’s schedule offers more variety than ever before and we look forward to welcoming players from around the world to the Rio for our 40th annual extravaganza this summer.” The famed Amazon Room in the Rio Convention Center once again will serve as the center of the poker universe this summer, featuring the same highly popular blueprint as last year. Gold bracelet tournaments will begin at 12 noon or 5 PM Pacific Time each day, with a maximum of 10-one hour levels being played for the noon starts, while the 5 PM events will play a maximum of 8 one-hour levels. For those fortunate enough to advance past the first day, re-starts for noon bracelet events will begin at 2 PM, and 5 PM tournaments will restart at 3 PM with a maximum of 10 levels being played each day until a champion is crowned. Pre-registration for the 2009 WSOP will begin in late February on-site at the Main Cage of the Rio in Las Vegas and online through www.worldseriesofpoker.com. Players will be encouraged to register through a streamlined online process in advance of coming to Las Vegas to avoid being shutout of their favorite events. Any foreign entrants who wire transfer monies will receive the exchange rate into U.S. dollars at the time of the wire transfer, thus locking in their exchange rate in advance. A complete array of satellites, from single-table to mega, will be offered beginning from May 26-July 5, 2009. Nightly No-Limit Hold’em tournaments will be offered from May 26-July 14 at 7:00 PM and 11:00 PM. All winners will be required to provide a valid picture ID. Tax forms will be completed for those with winnings in excess of $5,000 net of event buy-in. Players without a Tax Identification Number and foreign players from non-tax treaty countries are subject to up to 30% tax withholding. Harrah’s reserves the right to cancel, change or modify the tournament or any tournament event, in part or in whole, without notice.
