MAŁGORZATA WERDON
Hi! My name is Małgosia, which in English would be Margaret. I am a young architect, graduated last year at Gdansk University of Technology. My Master in Architecture course was conducted in English. During the second term I participated in an exchange programme and joined MArch students from School of Art, Design and Architecture at Plymouth University. This is not my only international experience in the field of architecture. For one year I was also a student of Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in Spain. As I wanted to practise more my spanish and gain more professional experience I started to work in architectural studio owned by Argentinean architect Carlos Gelis. Being an active member of Erasmus Student Network (european organisation which supports students exchange programs) and managing with students from all over the globe, I got an ability of easy and efficitent communication in international companionship. Also, as I am truly in fond of foreign cultures and different ways of living in cities I have been doing some travels around
Europe (for instance: Stockholm, Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Vienna, Berlin, Karlsruhe, Strasburg, Paris, Porto, Lisbon, Barcelona, Milan, London, Glasgow, Bristol, Dublin…) and I am still excited for the trips that are ahead of me! Since I remember I have always wanted to improve things and make a difference. In the course of my education I realised that what is most important to me is the everyday functionality of space and respect to the environment. That is why in my projects I put strong emphasis on usability. I picture my professional life working as a specialist in implementation of modern architectural and urban solutions. Those ones that would make our cities better and happier places. Currently I work in Streets and Green Spaces Office Department of Public Space Development in Gdańsk, Poland. My main duties are to indicate designs of urban furniture, materials used in investments in public spaces. I also check projects of these investments and give corrections if there are mistakes in functionality or used materials.

Podgrodzie - revitalisation in Słupsk, Poland, 2017 Master thesis @Gdańsk University of Technology
°expanding the inner-city
°diverse community
Currently Podgrodzie seems to be a negative example of the transitional area between inner city and residential neighbourhood. The urban life FUSION DEVELOPMENT decays just in its corner. The idea of this project is to OF invite and attractCHARACTERS FUZJA RÓŻNYCH CHARAKTERÓW people into it. Podgrodzie will be vitalised through comprehensive design. ZABUDOWY
The evolution of ‘Podgrodzie’ is based on four keyinner assumptions. The first city is about creating well functioning network of public spaces. This will be residential urbanization provided through diverse cultural, commercial and educational offer. The second includes calming car traffic and promoting pedestrian and bicycle Area of ‘Podgrodzie’ is going to be composed of two parts: movement. Next assumption involves increasing density of ‘Podgrodzie’ with blocks and dense inner-city development with multi-family low intesity residential area of single-family houses. buidlings that are not only residential but host other functions. Moreover dwellings are supposed to be of different measurements to be suitable for various types of residents. At last, to ensure even greater variety of offers for future dwellers, new ‘Podgrodzie’ will be formed by inner-city part and part of low density development with single family houses.

The project aims to solve social, environmental and economic issues effecting both the local communities in Słupsk and Ustka, as well as in a country-wide scale. The two cities were combined to form The Proto-City, a live test-bed for research and experimentation on alternative energy sources and alternative building materials.

The Baltic Sea is an object to several environmental issues such as eutrophication and loss of biodiversity. In addition, the coastal region faces future sea level rise and increasing anthropogenic pressure of urbanisation and tourism. The main aim of this research is to find multifunctional spatial solutions and development strategies for Baltic coastal regions based on the ecosystem services concept which are more beneficial to the sustainability, health and resiliency of cities and communities in the coastal Baltic region.

The main and primary concept of the building form was a creation of a space that would be a shelter for locals. The passage through this almost entirely touristic neighbourhood is unhindered due to symmetric and perpendicular net of streets but on the other hand it definitely does not encourage to stay in it. For this reason a new square formed by cantilevers carved out of two adjacent blocks was designed. The multiplicity of uses is intended to stimulate and integrate all the age groups that pertain to the local community.

Revitalisation of Tercio y Terol is about exploiting the potential of charming single-family houses cologne through adapting the design from 1946 to modern society necesities.
Reclaiming streets for pedestrians, enhancing permeability, introducing greenery and public spaces and providing services among residential buildings are the core strategies of the concept.

Street life depends on possibilities that its space gives. For this reason to ensure visitors the intersections of Tercio y Terol streets are changed into pedestrian friendly. Reduced car traffic and introduced greenery make residents feel comfortable and content.

To ensure proper density of the settlement it is necessary to apply new development in northeastern part. Different typologies of residential units are proposed. This is crucial to form a community that is heterogenous but wellintegrated at the same time.
