Community News ICM Hoping to Complete New Center by 2014 By Wafa Unus

Muslim Link Staff Reporter The Muslim community in the DC Metropolitan area is bursting at its seams and local masajids are struggling to not only keep up with the growth but effectively support it for the long term through community center expansions that can easily cost millions of dollars. While some communities search for existing structures to move into in tough economic times, the Islamic Center of Maryland is ready to settle down and heavily expand on their current modest property in Gaithersburg Maryland. After avoiding the risk of losing its right to build on its 10 acres of land, the Center is ready to break ground on its six million dollar community center construction plan. ICM held a fundraising dinner to address the urgent need for continued support on December 10th 2011 in

hopes of garnering enough financial backing to continue the development of the expanded facility. Currently located on a 10 acre lot of land, ICM is only legally allowed to occupy eight percent. Because ICMs current location is on an environmentally sensitive wetland, regulation states that only eight percent of the land can be developed and the rest must remain in its natural state unless an exception is granted by the county. If the exception is allowed, the com-

munity has three years to break ground on the masjid construction. ICM has been granted two exceptions by the county thus far, once in 2005 and another in 2008 on the condition that they received a land development permit by 2011. They acquired the permit in July and are in the process of awarding contracts for the development of the land. The Islamic Center now has the funds needed start ground work before the

expiration of the exception. It is currently no longer faced with the potential of having to file for an exception for the third time. ICM hopes to complete the community center by 2014. The Master Plan for the new facility is approximately 40,000 square feet and includes a full school, gymnasium, kitchen, multipurpose hall, and prayer area built in two separate phases.

ADAMS Pushes for 10,000 Twenty Dollar Bills Before 2012 By Wafa Unus

Muslim Link Staff Reporter With 2012 around the corner The All Dulles Area Muslim’s Society (ADAMS) is in full fundraising mode. ADAMS recently launched a unique fundraising campaign aimed at making big bucks through small donations. In order to meet funding requirements for operational needs, the community has been encouraged to bring a twenty dollar bill to donate to the Center when attending Jummah prayer each Friday. ADAMS hopes to collect ten thousand twenty dollar bills by the end of the year in order to meet the two hundred thousand dollar goal before ringing in 2012.

While in need of funding for operations of its current facilities, ADAMS is also seeking financial support for the expansion of its facilities as well. This year, the ADAMS annual fundraising dinner took place on December 10th and was spearheaded by the ADAMS Youth who played a major role in planning and facilitating the event. ADAMS is currently working to expand its existing main center as well as acquire new permanent locations for satellite centers. ADAMS serves over 5000 families between its ten branches in the Northern Virginia area, according to the 2010 ADAMS Annual Report.

ICNA Council for Social Justice Holds Fundraiser, Lobbying Seminar By Muslim Link Staff Over the past year, the Islamic Circle of North America’s (ICNA) Council for Social Justice (CSJ) has been working toward the organized involvement of Muslims in social and humanitarian issues in the United States. While the Council is works with existing efforts in the social justice field, it also

aims to provide new initiatives where it feels appropriate and necessary. Among those initiatives is an effort to alleviate hunger in the States and address issues of grievance regarding the U.S. criminal justice system, according to the CSJ’s website. Though the themes social justice and humanitarian aide is the basis of many non-profit organizations, CSJ attributes

its motivation to a very specific calling. It’s mission is not merely a philanthropic effort but a religious responsibility. The front page of their website notes a verse from the Holy Quran, “Oh you who believe! Be standard bearers for Justice, as witnesses to Allah, even as against yourselves, or your parents, Or your kin, whether it be rich or poor; For Allah can best protect both. Follow not

the lusts, lest you Swerve, and if you Distort Justice or decline To do Justice, verily Allah is well-Acquainted with all that you do.” While the motivation behind CSJ may be religiously based, the Council works with a variety of Muslim based organi-

Dar-us-Salaam “Sabr” Annual Dinner Rides to Success Behind Bike-a-Thon Excitement By Muslim Link Staff When Dar-us-Salaam’s Funding Development Office began designing the marketing material for the College Park, Maryland community’s annual fundraising dinner a few months before the December 17, 2011 event, they added a subtle element to the poster design. The silhouette of a person riding a bike. The theme for the annual dinner – which regularly attracts well over 1,000 guests

and supporters – was “Sabr Wins the Race”. The marketing team wanted this year’s event to promote the values of persistence and perseverance; Dar-usSalaam’s mission to build an exemplary Muslim community has been challenged with their need for a larger facility, and its leadership was asking the community to keep moving ahead. The bike rider on the marketing poster was a teaser for a special event that had yet to be announced or even planned. An Al-Huda School parent had been

discussing a 235-mile bike-a-thon for Islamic education, but when the poster was designed, nothing had been decided. “It was a bit risky, but even if the bikea-thon hadn’t [happened], the image still went with our design alhumdulillah,” said a member of the marketing team. The bike-a-thon did happen one week before the annual dinner, and the annual SABR Pg 11

ICNA Coat Drive Provides Warmth Ahead of Winter Written by Abu Saliha, Muslim Link Contributing Writer

As Muslims we are encouraged to help our neighbors, whether they are Muslim or not. One of the projects initiated by the local ICNA-DC volunteers in conjunction with ICNA Relief and the Young Muslims this fall was a Winter Coat Drive. The Drive was advertised through the ICNA-DC website, posters and emails with the heading “Spread The Warmth : Help Us Keep Someone Warm This Winter”. The goal was to collect new or gently used coats for those who are in most need of warmth. After getting the requisite permissions, boxes were setup in the following masajid in Maryland: Dar Al-Taqwa, Darus-Salaam, Islamic Community Center of Laurel, Islamic Center of Maryland, Islamic Society of Baltimore, Islamic Society of Southern Prince Georges County, Islamic Society of Frederick,

Islamic Society of the Washington Area, and the Muslim Community Center. In Virginia, the following centers helped collect coats: Badr Community Center, Islamic Community Center of Northern Virginia, and the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Center in Alexandria. All together over 250 coats were collected over the first two weekends of December and distributed on December 17, 2011 from the curb side in front of Masjid Al-Mumineen in Baltimore. Most of the coats were given out in the first hour of distribution, which began about after dhuhr prayer. A volunteer with ICNADC negotiated a deal with Zipps Dry Cleaners in Columbia to get all coats (except for leather and suede coats) cleaned for $1.99 each. Left over items will be distributed following jummah at Masjid Al-Mumineen in sha Allah. Items not suitable for distribution were discarded. All other winter clothes other than coats were dropped in the large yellow Planet Aid bins for others to use.

ADC Hosts Film and Q&A Session On Egyptian Revolution Washington, DC | www.adc.org | December 21, 2011 -- Tuesday evening, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) opened its doors to more than 50 community members, leaders and academics for the screening of independent documentary film, “Egypt: The Story Behind the Revolution,” as part of its Arabesque Lecture Series. Director, Khaled Sayed and film interviewee, Amal Mattar came to the ADC Heritage Center to present the film for the first time in Washington DC. Sayed filmed the documentary primarily in Egypt in March of 2011, soon after the January uprisings, and interviewed a variety of young protesters who were active in the revolution. The film pulled together a span of interviews, and news coverage, culminating in a broad, crosssocietal reflection on what happened during the Egyptian revolution and why; giving the audience a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the way in which activists

.

harnessed the power of collective consciousness to form a people’s revolution. Interviewees included prominent Egyptian analysts and academics who lent insight into the origins of unrest and discontent under Mubarak’s 30 year rule. Interviewees discussed the evolution of the demonstrators’ demands which culminated in Mubarak’s resignation. The uprisings, which began as a movement by young, educated, upper middle class Egyptians, gathered momentum across the generations and classes of Egyptian society. Those interviewed offered their reflections on life in Egypt under Mubarak and their motives for getting involved in the revolution, the role of social media as an organizing tool, and finally, their hopes for a democratic and free Egypt in the future. The film included analysis of the United

States’ response to the uprising as a reflection of its strategic interests in the region. Further, activists interviewed discussed tactics used to grow their numbers, organize, and overcoming police attempts at suppression. Especially poignant were eyewitness accounts of interfaith unity as a symbol and vision of a future Egypt that is inclusive and tolerant. Following the screening, a lively discussion ensued as Sayed and Mattar fielded questions from audience members. The revolution continues to this day as the military has taken control of the country, and demonstrators now struggle against the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF). Audience members expressed frustration with the United States government providing financial aid and tear gas to the SCAF. The discussion also included concerns about the waning momentum

of the revolution and the drop in the number of demonstrators in the streets. Both Sayed and Mattar cited converging issues of education, poverty and divided sentiment toward the Egyptian military as reasons for low participation. Sayed mentioned, “Police wait until [protesters] become smaller in numbers and then attack.” “People have work, they are there on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, but then must return to work” “Interview people in their homes and ask them why they aren’t back in the streets,” one Egyptian-American woman asked, “If we are going to be in the streets with this amount of people, the revolution is dead. How can we get our revolution back?” Mattar cited the strong role that Egyptian women as activists and that they

Community Advisory: American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Alarmed by Increase in Reported Complaints ADC is alarmed at the significant rise in the number of discrimination complaints that have been reported to the Legal Department during the month of December thus far. ADC has experienced a significant increase in the number of complaints received in December, marking the highest total for any month of 2011. The total number of cases received is nearly triple the number of cases received in December of 2010, and nearly 80% above the average for the month of December over the past 10 years. It the opinion of ADC that this increase in cases is directly linked to the negative sentiments and hateful rhetoric launched against the Arab American and Muslim American communities during the recent controversies involving Lowe’s

and its advertising on TLC’s reality TV show All-American Muslim and Newt Gingrich’s comments on Palestinians. A majority of reported complaints immediatley followed the Lowe’s controversy.

Precaution Advisory:

· Ensure that any place of worship you attend is prepared with an emergency plan that can be implemented should the need arise. Also, be familiar with all the exits to your place of worship, in case the building is attacked. For those attending evening Church services, and for Muslims attending nightly prayers, contact your local law enforcement officials and ask for protection during the evening hours. Lastly, it is advisable to find out whether your place of worship has an open line of communication with law enforcement.

ADC is releasing the following advisory statement to members of the Arab, Muslim, South Asian and Sikh American communities.

· If you are placed in physical danger because of your ethnicity, religion or national origin: Call the police (dial 911 in most communities), and/or contact

ADC reminds its members and greater community to be safe during this Holiday season. Please keep the following precautionary advisory tips in mind as you celebrate the holidays with family and friends.

the local FBI office. It is the FBI’s job to investigate hate-motivated crimes and specific threats of violence. List of FBI field offices · Ensure that your children are aware that they can report any incidents of bullying or harassment to a school official or other adult. lion strong army of India is only close to17, 000-20,000. We are striving to become equal citizens, and participate as a responsible citizen of India,” said Khan. While the organization and its local chapters work toward building awareness of the state of Muslims in India, the obstacles that face the community overseas are becoming apparent in the States. IAMC aims to prevent individuals and institutions in the United States from becoming involved with Indian personalities who promote “hate-filled ideologies,” a concern that just recently reared its head in one of the United States most prestigious universities. IAMC commended Harvard University for their recent action against Janata party chief Subramanian Swamy who taught courses at the University. Harvard Following the Q&A, attendees mingled and discussed their reactions to the film. Muthana Rahman, a Middle East Studies master’s candidate at the University of Chicago, commented: “I felt that the film gave an in-depth view of (the situation) more than what I’ve seen and read from the New York Times and Al Jazeera. It illuminated the reactions of the Egyptian activists who recalled what happened. Further, it explains the low polling results among Egyptians toward the US

dropped courses taught by Swamy after controversy regarding an article he wrote that was published on July 16th 2011 in Daily News and Analysis (DNA), an Indian based newspaper. In the article Swamy called not only for the destruction of mosques in India but also the disenfranchisement of non-Hindus as well as a ban on conversion from Hinduism. Although Harvard initially stood by Swamy under the banner of free speech, some University faculty members argued that the sentiments be considered hate-speech as they encouraged violence against an entire religion and the destruction of places of worship. The University subsequently canceled Swamy’s summer economics courses, according to the Harvard Crimson.

In a letter to Harvard University President Dr. Drew Faust, IAMC President, Shaheen Khateeb wrote, “While Dr. Swamy is entitled to his bigoted views, in his individual capacity, his public pronouncements of hate against the Muslim population, and attempts to sow the seeds of strife and discord among people of different faiths cannot be allowed to go unchecked. Harvard’s decision to drop courses by Dr. Swamy, is in keeping with Harvard’s standing as an institution of higher learning where the faculty and students are held to high standards of responsible public behavior.” IAMC is involved in various initiatives to encourage institutions like Harvard to hold themselves and others to a standard that encourages diversity of thought while clearly making the distinction between the right to freedom of speech, and the reality of hate speech.

Half Empty or Half Full, Yet Still Incomplete

“Marriage is Half Your Deen.” This is basic knowledge to any Muslim, yet so many Muslims get divorced or delay marriage for numerous reasons. The Muslim Journal just celebrated its annual event, “A Time to Be Grateful”. As Muslims, we should be grateful for all we have achieved over the years, but grateful is not grounds for being complacent. We know there is much more progress to be made, and one of those areas in need of progress is Healthy Marriage in our community. Masjid Muhammad’s Single-toMarried (S2M) Committee is one of several organizations striving to make progress on Marriage in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area (DMV). Healthy Marriage is a common interest of all Muslim Communities that must be moved on collectively to get the best results. S2M has acknowledge this common interest and reached out to local Masjids and Islamic Centers to broaden the Single Muslim network. S2M is offering three resources to Single Muslims looking for marriage. 1st Resource: Single Socials every month to foster a

positive environment for single Muslims to interact with each other and be able to identify who else is single and Muslim. 2nd Resource: Singles Workshops every month to educate as well as address the issues and concerns of single Muslims looking for marriage. 3rd Resource: Singles Database that will allow single Muslims access to pre-authorized information on other single Muslims. The first S2M event was a Singles Social Game Night on Dec 17, 2011 at Masjid Muhammad. The next event is a Singles Workshop scheduled on Dec 24, 2011 at Masjid Muhammad. We are inviting all adult single Muslims of all ages. Please send event RSVP requests and questions of interest to mmsinglemuslim@yahoo. com or (202)483-8832. dinner rode behind it on the waves of positive feeling and emotions the bikea-thon stirred up. Dar-us-Salaam supporters donated and pledged $260,000, just shy of the $300,000 goal. Dar-us-Salaam leaders said this was a strong show of support, especially given the continuing economic downturn. The packed program began with a recitation and translation of the Qur’an from two young graduates of the Darus-Salaam Hifz School, followed by speech presentations from Al-Huda High School students. Al-Huda middle and elementary school classes performed well rehearsed nasheeds. One of the highlights of the evening program – held annually at the University of Maryland University College Inn and Conference Center – featured a video presentation which captured the sights and sounds of the bike-a-thon for Islamic education. After the 12 minute video, Brother Abdur Rasheed who biked from College Park, Maryland to Camp Hill, Pennsylvania and back spoke to the audience, emphasizing the need to take initiative and “do something” to support the community. He said everyone has something to offer and no effort is too small. Other highlights from the evening included a powerful speech on patience and perseverance by Imam Safi Khan, complete with an on-stage experiment based on a fictional conversation between oil and water written by Ibn Qayyim. Imam Safi poured water into a glass which already contained oil, and the oil rose to the top. Ibn Qayyim pointed out that the value and worth of oil was higher because it had gone through pressure and stress when it was produced. Similarly, if a person perseveres through hardships, they become stronger for it. Another highlight of the evening was the final program event – a martial arts demonstration from Dar-us-Salaam’s Aqabah Karate. Breath taking dive rolls, a live on-stage sparring match, and board breaks sent the energy level in the audience high even as the program winded down at 10pm. Action Aboard Airplane Creates a Reluctant Hero Jabir Hazziez Jr. has been showered with accolades, but he sees his role as reflecting his Muslim faith. By Tony Rizzo

The Kansas City Star, 2011-12-26 A man foaming at the mouth lunged for the airliner’s cabin door, attempting to open it as flight attendants struggled to hold him at bay. Most of the post-Thanksgiving travelers cruising at some 30,000 feet toward Kansas City that day were unaware of the potential disaster looming at the front of the plane. But when a crew member came on the intercom asking if anyone had medical training, passenger Jabir Hazziez Jr. heard the sense of concern in her voice. What happened next came as no surprise to those who know and work with Hazziez, a Kansas City firefighter, reserve Jackson County deputy and

member of the U.S. Naval Reserve. As Hazziez walked toward the front of the plane, he saw a man pacing and holding his head in his hands. The man appeared to be in an “altered mental state” and clearly appeared agitated. “He was trying to get to the door of the plane,” Hazziez recalled recently. “I grabbed ahold of him and tried to calm him down.” But the man only became more combative and knocked Hazziez into the cockpit door. Using his law enforcement training, Hazziez put the man in a neck restraint and took him to the floor. The man continued kicking and trying to reach the door with his feet. Another passenger grabbed the man’s legs. Together they held him for about 15 or

20 minutes until the plane, which had taken off in Atlanta, made an emergency landing in Memphis and authorities came on board to deal with the man. Later, Hazziez learned the man had been suffering from an adverse reaction to a vaccine. “I’m glad it was a medical situation and not a criminal incident,” Hazziez said. “It could have been a lot worse.” When the flight resumed, Hazziez was showered with thanks from his fellow passengers and received a standing ovation before leaving the plane after that Nov. 30 flight. Although Hazziez’s religious faith didn’t matter to those grateful passengers, it has become an important aspect

Why Do We Delay Repentance? By Abdul-Rahim Ammar

IslamMessage.com, 12/26/2011 Repentance is ultimately the goal that we all seek. All sane people are conscious of their numerous sins, and those who believe in Allah and His Messenger (Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) recognize that they will be held accountable for their sins, and therefore desire to be free of the evil consequences of their misdeeds. Islam offers man the ideal way by which he may be released from the burden of his sins. The word Tawbah (repentance) in Arabic literally means ‘to return’. In an Islamic context, it refers to the act of leaving what Allah has prohibited and returning to what He, Almighty, has commanded. The subject of repentance is one that concerns all people who believe in Allah, and is vital for the Muslims to understand because our salvation in the Hereafter depends on our repentance to Allah, as Allah commands (what means): “… And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, that you might succeed.” [Qur’an 24:31] Allah also Says (what means): “…Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.” [Qur’an 2:222] One may have a real intention to repent, but there may be some obstacles to the path of repentance. If this is the case, then he needs to act without hesitation and remove those obstacles to clear the way to a happy soul. The postponement of repentance may be the result of either a deliberate desire to prolong the illicit pleasure derived from the sin, or doubt on the part of an ignorant sinner whether or not Allah would accept his repentance. However, we have to be certain that Al-

1. Taking sins lightly:

A believer sees his sins as if he were sitting under a mountain which he is afraid may collapse on him, whereas the wicked person considers his sins as flies passing over his nose which he just drives away lah will guide us to success and safeguard us against our malice. We also must be confident that Allah forgives our sins and that He, and only He, can judge us. It is only His Judgement that is worthy of our worry and anxiety. So we should fear Him only because sincere repentance removes all sins and disobedience.

will forgive him.” [Ahmad]

The door of repentance is always open, until...

O heedless soul! Hasten to repent before the knock of death sounds and the time of repentance runs out. Do not get caught dying in a state of disobedience to your Most Merciful Lord. Satan gives you long hope and empty promises; he

The door to repentance is always open and will not be closed in the face of any repentant person, regardless of his sins.

Allah Says in the Qur’an what means: “But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says: ‘Indeed, I have repented now,’ or of those who die while they are disbelievers...” [Qur’an 4:18]

Being confused, some people may think that repentance is only required for major sins. It should be noted that repentance from all sins is obligatory. Expect this gate to have two locks: death and the approach of the Day of Judgement. The first was mentioned in the Hadeeth: “Allah accepts a slave’s repentance unless his death approaches.” [AtTirmithi] The other was mentioned in the Hadeeth: “Whosoever turns to Allah in repentance before the sun rises in the West, Allah

delays your repentance until your heart becomes as callous as a rock by being adamant in sin and disobedience, and you would therefore meet your Lord in a wretched state. If the door of repentance is closed to you, it will never open to you again. What keeps us from repenting?

The problem with many of us today is that we do not fear Allah, which means that we do not think seriously about disobeying Him and therefore fall into sin, without giving any real thought to it. Hence, we should think about the statement which Ibn Mas’ood may Allah be pleased with him made: “A believer sees his sins as if he were sitting under a mountain which he is afraid may collapse on him, whereas the wicked person considers his sins as flies passing over his nose which he just drives away like this (and he waved his hand across his face to illustrate this).” [Al-Bukhaari] The Prophet (Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) said: “Take caution against minor sins, because such sins are like a group of people who temporarily settled in the middle of a valley. Then, they decided to make a fire, so each one of them brought a stick until they were able to make it, so they baked their bread. Thus, minor sins (when they accumulate) may destroy the one who commits them.” [Ahmad] 2. “What is the point? I will only end up doing it again” Such an approach is the result of a misunderstanding. Indeed, one of the conditions of repentance is having a real intention not to return to the same sin. This, however, does not mean that Satan will never tempt you to commit the same sin again. Thus, if you have failed yourself, and you returned to the same sin, it does not mean that your first repentance was a lie. You should hasten to make additional repentance, with a real intention not to return to this sin, keeping in mind that Allah’s mercy extends over everything. 3. “Allah is forgiving, so let me sin” When reminded of repentance and the Praying Pg 16

hideousness of disobedience, some people would respond that Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. An atheist once said in sarcasm: “You should commit as many sins as you can because you are heading towards the Lord who is MostGenerous.” There is no doubt that such a view is complete ignorance of the religion of Allah, because Allah’s mercy is close to the righteous and not to the wrongdoers. 4. “I am destined to be a sinner” Some people may choose to blame AlQadr (fate) for their sins. For example, if you ask any of them, “Why do you not perform the Prayers? Why do you not fast? Why do you drink or smoke? Why do you not repent from your disobedience?” They would respond by saying:

“This is Allah’s Qadr” or: “I am doomed to do this.” This is definitely a grave misconception and an evasion of the truth. Believing in Al-Qadr does not mean that one is destined to commit sins. It is true that Allah has written all human beings’ deeds, good or bad, and only He knows the unseen, but the believer is not forced to perform a good deed, nor is he forced to commit any disobedience. Instead, he has been granted the ability to reflect, reason and then make a decision freely. Al-Qadr is only responsible for the calamities and blessings that an individual may confront because he can do nothing about them. For example, if a couple were to marry and have three children, then this is their Qadr. It is impermissible to fault Al-Qadr for our sins and disobedience because doing so is akin to being in confrontation and showing dissatisfaction with Allah. Repentance wipes out all sins, major and minor:

Being confused, some people may think that repentance is only required for major sins. It should be noted that repentance from all sins is obligatory. Even the Prophet (Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) who was sinless, asked Allah to forgive him on a daily basis. The Prophet (Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) is reported to have said: “O people! Make repentance to Allah. I swear by Allah that I make repentance to Him more than seventy times every day.” [Al-Bukhaari] Therefore, we all need to fear Allah, ask His forgiveness and be aware that there is no sin that is minor with persistence, and no major sin with seeking Allah’s forgiveness (i.e. if the minor sin is repeated many times it becomes a major one.) Thus, sincere repentance wipes out all committed sins. Never despair!

Someone might say: “I want to repent but my sins are too many.” But Allah Says what means: “Say: ‘O my slaves who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” [Qur’an 39:53] Therefore, we should never lose hope or stop asking for Allah’s forgiveness. Its importance is shown to us in the Hadeeth in which the Prophet (Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) said: “O people! Turn to Allah in repentance and seek His forgiveness, for I make repentance to Him a hundred times every day.” [Muslim] Repentance is such a great act of worship that doing it can erase all our sins altogether, as the Prophet (Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) said: “One who repents from sin is like one without sin.” [Ibn Maajah]

FBI Illegally Using Community Outreach To Gather Intelligence, ACLU Alleges By Jerry Markon

The Washington Post, 12/1/2011

The FBI is using its extensive community outreach to Muslims and other groups to secretly gather intelligence in violation of federal law, the American Civil Liberties Union alleged Thursday. Citing internal bureau documents, the ACLU said agents in California are attending meetings at mosques and other events and illegally recording information about the attendees’ political and religious affiliations. FBI officials denied the allegations. They said that records kept from outreach sessions are not used for investigations. The documents reveal new details of the FBI’s efforts to build a more trusting relationship with Muslims and other communities — a major priority since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Federal of-

ficials have said that the effort is aimed at protecting Muslims’ civil rights and smoothing lingering resentment over the law-enforcement crackdown after the attacks, along with helping the government fight terrorism.

cords on someone the agent encountered at a Ramadan dinner at a San Francisco Islamic association. An attendee is described as “very progressive.” Another is called “very Western in appearance and outlook.”

Some of the papers describe agents speaking at career days, briefing community members on FBI programs and helping them work with police to fight drug abuse. But the files also depict agents recording Social Security numbers and other identifying information after they meet people at the events and, in at least one instance, noting their political views. It appears that the agents are conducting follow-up investigations in some instances, but heavy redactions in the documents make it impossible to determine how far any examination might have gone. In one case, an agent wrote that he checked California motor vehicle re-

At another Ramadan dinner in San Francisco, an agent recorded the names of Muslim groups listed on pamphlets distributed at the event — and appeared to note that several people associated with one of the groups were under investigation. The FBI turned the heavily redacted documents over to the ACLU as part of a lawsuit filed by the civil rights group and two other organizations to uncover what the groups consider to be inappropriate or illegal FBI tactics in the fight against terrorism. Hina Shamsi, director of the ACLU’s

national security project, said some of the actions depicted in the documents violate the Privacy Act, a law that bars federal agencies from maintaining information about activities protected by the First Amendment, such as freedom of speech and association. FBI officials said the law allows agencies to keep information that is considered relevant and necessary to their mission, in certain circumstances. A dangerous ‘guise’ “It’s one thing for the FBI to say to a community group, ‘We’re going to come and meet you to establish ties,’ ” Shamsi said. “But it’s a very dangerous way to proceed to collect intelligence under the guise of community outreach.”

Happy Birthday, Bill [of Rights] Obama Breaks Promise To Veto Bill Allowing Indefinite Detention of Americans Johnathan Turley

December 15, 2011 There was a brief moment when civil libertarians were stunned to see President Barack Obama actually take a stand in favor of civil liberties after years to rolling back on basic rights of citizens and moving beyond the Bush Administration in building up the security state. Obama said that he would veto the defense bill that contained a horrific provision for

the indefinite detention of American citizens. While many predicted it, Obama has now again betrayed the civil liberties community and lifted the threat of the veto. Americans will now be subject to indefinite detention without trial in federal courts in a measure supported by both Democrats and Republicans. It is a curious way to celebrate the 220th anniversary of the Bill of Rights. This leave Ron Paul as the only candi-

date in the presidential campaign fighting the bill and generally advocating civil liberties as a rallying point for his campaign. Paul offered another strong argument against the Patriot Act and other expansions of police powers in his last debate. He also noted that the Patriot Act provisions were long advocated before 9-11, which was used as an opportunity to expand police powers. As discussed in a prior column, Obama has destroyed the civil liberties movement in the Unit-

ed States and has convinced many liberals to fight for an Administration that blocked torture prosecutions, expanded warrantless surveillance, continued military tribunals, killed Americans on the sole authority of the President, and other core violations of civil liberties. The White House is saying that changes

FBI spokesman Michael P. Kortan said the bureau’s meetings with community leaders are not designed to gather intelligence but rather “to enhance public trust in the FBI in order to enlist the cooperation of the public to fight criminal activity.” He said that the practice provides “information to the public in support of crime prevention efforts, and opens lines of communication to help make the FBI more responsive to community concerns.” Kortan said FBI policy requires that an “appropriate separation be maintained between outreach and operational activities” and that although “facts surrounding an outreach meeting or event may be documented,” that is only for internal purposes to ensure “that personnel time and resources are being used effectively and in compliance with applicable laws,

to the law made it unnecessary to veto the legislation. That spin is facially ridiculous. The changes were the inclusion of some meaningless rhetoric after key amendments protecting citizens were defeated. The provision merely states that nothing in the provisions could be construed to alter Americans’ legal rights. Since the Senate clearly views citizens are not just subject to indefinite detention but even execution without a trial, the change offers nothing but rhetoric to hide the harsh reality. THe Administration and Democratic members are in full spin — using language designed to obscure the authority given to the military. The exemption for American citizens from the mandatory detention requirement (section 1032) is the screening language for the next section, 1031, which offers no exemption for American citizens from the authorization to use the military to indefinitely detain people without charge or trial. At least Senator Lindsey Graham was honest when he said on the Senate floor that “1031, the statement of authority to detain, does apply to American citizens and it designates the world as the battle-

regulations, policies and program requirements.” Some Muslim groups reacted to the documents with anger. The Council on American-Islamic Relations said the FBI’s actions will have a “chilling effect” on Muslims’ constitutionally protected activities. Farhana Khera, executive director of Muslim Advocates, a San Franciscobased civil rights group, said the papers “confirm the worst fears of Muslim community members.” The FBI, under intense pressure to prevent another attack on U.S. soil, has sought to strike a balance between civil liberties and law enforcement in the decade since the Sept. 11 strikes. Civil liberties groups have long accused agents of overreacting, but FBI and Justice Department officials say they have helped safeguard the nation from another attack.

field, including the homeland.” I am not sure which is worse: the loss of core civil liberties or the almost mocking post hoc rationalization for abandoning principle. The Congress and the President have now completed a law that would have horrified the Framers. Indefinite detention of citizens is something that the Framers were intimately familiar with and expressly sought to bar in the Bill of Rights. While the Framers would have likely expected citizens in the streets defending their freedoms, this measure was greeted with a shrug and a yawn by most citizens and reporters. Instead, we are captivated by whether a $10,000 bet by Romney was real or pretend in the last debate. Even more distressing is the statement from sponsor Senator Levin, Chairman of the Armed Services Committee that “The language which precluded the application of Section 1031 to American citizens was in the bill that we originally approved … and the administration asked us to remove the language which says that U.S. citizens and lawful residents would not be subject to this section.” Source: Guardian

The documents released Thursday show agents in a variety of settings in Muslim and other communities. In one 2009 memo, an agent in Sacramento appears to be monitoring the Saudi Student Association at California State University through the outreach effort. The agent writes of meeting with someone at the student union building and records that person’s birth date, Social Security number, telephone number and address — all in the same sentence. The person is described as giving the agent detailed information about the association. Yet some of the documents are more mundane, including a 2009 memo detailing FBI contacts with Assyrian organizations in San Jose, which notes how the Assyrian language is “very similar to ancient Aramaic.”

Muslim organizations that featured FBI presentations, a question-and-answer session and lunch catered by a local kabob restaurant. The writer provides a detailed “demographics” breakdown of participants, including what percentage are Sunni Muslim versus Shiite, and lists all the organizations in attendance. Sara Mostafavi, a board member, said she found that troubling. -----------------------------------------------In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. Honey Heals Skin Disease and Hair Loss Every Muslim has read

that the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam told his ummah about the wonderful nature of honey. In the Qur’an in Surah An-Nahl, Allah described honey as a “drink of varying color wherein is healing for men”. Its no wonder that scientists are spending more and more resources examining, testing, and developing honey-based medical treatments. As early as December 26, 2007, the Associated Press ran a story titled “Honey makes medical comeback”. One company that has believed in the restorative power of honey for a long time is HoneyDerm, Inc., a Lansing, Michigan based company that spent years bringing the healing power of honey to people suffering from hair loss, dandruff, and skin disease. Their most famous product line is Hairback Lotion and Hairtonix Shampoo, that “helps stimulate new hair growth and thicken existing hair”. Honeyderm, Inc also claims the products solve dandruff and scalp psoriasis. The Muslim Link requested access to some of Honeyderm’s customers, and Brother Mahmoud from Honeyderm gladly offered us some phone numbers. Brother Hasan, in his late 30’s is from Maryland and suffers from the common skin disease eczema. “I’ve had eczema

since high school, and it got worse as the years went on. I went to a dermatologist and he recommended a cortisone-type prescription cream. It did stop the itch, but my skin was still dry and tight. I’ve tried lotions and shampoos from Aveeno, Lubiderm, Vaseline, and others. Alhumdulillah, I found Honeyderm’s Dermatonic-P, and it is really, really a blessing for people with Eczema or other skin illnesses. I no longer wake up sweating at night! AllahuAkbar!.” We called Abdurihman Khalil from Chicago. He did not know we were going to call. Abdurihman started losing his hair when he was about 28. He discovered the Hairback product line at a convention and decided to test its claims. “The hair loss stopped completely,” said Abdurihman. “It’s excellent, and I’ve been using it now for 6 years.” We also called Brother Mustafa Al-Omary in Sterling Heights, Michigan. He decided to do something about his thinning hair at age 40 and tried the Hairback treatment. Asked how long it took for him to see results, he told us “Oh gosh, less than a month. My thin spots filled in within 3 months,.” He said he would “absolutely” recommend the product to anyone. “It’s not a fly-by-night product, its awesome,” said Mustafa. We

also called Najeebudheen Appat, a 30-year old living in Los Angeles, CA. He’s had a severe dandruff

Dermatonic-P, and it is really, really a blessing for people with Eczema or other skin illnesses. I no longer wake up sweating at night! Allahu-Akbar!.” -- Br.Hasan, Maryland problem for a long-time, and had been searching for a solution. “I tried so many different products like tonics and shampoos, I can’t even remember them all, until I found this product around 2002. My problem was solved completely, the entire thing is taken care of. I even called [Honeyderm] with the great feedback,” recalled Najeebudheen. He told us that Allah creates shifa in many things, and Honeyderm’s products are a part of that. “For dandruff problems, this is the total solution,” he told us from his mobile phone.
