Brother, Sister to Celebrate Eid by Biking 360 Miles to Save the Planet By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter With its beautiful scenery, bike-friendly roads and shared-use paths, Maine is a great place to cycle. From the iconic Acadia National Park, to the rocky coast and then 360 miles on to Boston, Massachusetts, two of ADAMS Center’s own will bike the 5 day long Climate Ride. Hafidh Mohammed Hoque, 26, and his sister Fahmida, 19, who is also completing the memorization of the Quran, are Northern Virginia natives. Maryum Center Moves to Columbia By Muslim Link Staff Maryum Islamic Center (MIC) has a new home in Columbia, Maryland. A 3,450 square foot newly rented space, located on 9150 Rumsey Rd, Suite A-4, in a commercial office park is the site chosen for Maryum Center’s expanding services. Maryum Center started in Ellicott City, Howard County; it evolved from an all women’s Quran halaqah led by former Dar al Taqwa imam, Mahmoud Abdel Hady, into an Islamic Center that offers the 5 daily salahs, an after school Quran program as well other activities. The new facility will host Jumuah and daily prayers. “We officially moved to the new place on August 1st,” shared Patti Blades or Sister Aishah as she is known to the community. An email was sent out about the short notice move to the broader Maryland Muslim Community, and brothers from the Howard County as well as the Dar-usSalaam community in College Park came

to help pack and move the center. “On moving day, we had a few brothers with a moving truck [who] came to help pack,” says trustee Abdou Mahfouz. “They came in really bad weather,” chimes in his wife, Patti. An anonymous friend of the House

An After School Satan Club Could Be Coming To Your Kid’s Elementary School By Katherine Stewart The Washington Post, July 30, 2016 SALEM, Mass. —It’s a hot summer night, and leaders of the Satanic Temple have gathered in the crimson-walled living room of a Victorian manse in this city renowned for its witch trials in the 17th century. They’re watching a sepia-toned video, in which children dance around a maypole, a spider crawls across a clown’s face and eerie, ambient chanting gives way to a backward, demonic voice-over. The group chuckles with approval. They’re here plotting to bring their wisdom to the nation’s public elementary school children. They point out that Christian evangelical groups already have infiltrated the lives of America’s children through after-school religious programming in public schools, and they appear determined to give young students

a choice: Jesus or Satan. “It’s critical that children understand that there are multiple perspectives on all issues, and that they have a choice in how they think,” said Doug Mesner, the Satanic Temple’s co-founder. On Monday, the group plans to introduce its After School Satan Club to public elementary schools, including one in Prince George’s County, petitioning school officials to allow them to open immediately as the academic year starts. Chapter heads from New York, Boston, Utah and Arizona were in Salem on July 10 talking strategy, with others from Minneapolis, Detroit, San Jose, New Orleans, Pittsburgh and Florida participating online. The promotional video, which feels like a mash-up of a horror movie trailer and a “Saturday Night Live” sketch, will serve to promote

The Satanic Temple — which has been offering tongue-in-cheek support for the fallen angel in public arenas that have embraced prayer and parochial ceremonies — is bringing its fight over constitutional separation of church and state to the nation’s schools. If Kabab Could Be Blessed, They Might Be at Mayur in DC By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter

What do 13 generations of ulema, scholars, imams and huffaz and a restaurant owner who feeds homeless men and women for free at his uptown DC restaurant have in common? The love of God and the same family. Kazi Abdul Mannan is a scion of the Jhelum based family of scholars. His grandfather was a Punjabi poet famous for his poetry on the Prophet. He grew up on a farm - one of ten children. Abdul Mannan believes he is a conduit to help the homeless in the area and they are guests of God. ”My faith is behind my generosity,” he says. “Serving the needy and feeding the poor is the best of worship,” he says, slipping into Urdu. They come in and waiters take their orders. Abdul Mannan has trained his staff to treat them with the utmost respect and love. “Sit here for a few days and you will find hundreds of stories,” he says as he offers me a cup of hot tea. “One woman came in who worked for the State department but had fallen on hard times. She needed money for a hostel room and a hot meal. She came for several days and then one

day she came in with enough money to pay me back for the times I helped her out. I told her I couldn’t take the money but she insisted on paying it forward.

On Sundays he cooks a special meals and feeds those in need at the Georgetown Ministry with the help of some dedicated volunteers, whom he met online.

Abdul Mannan says, "Sometimes 15-20 come at one time and other days we have none. I ask Allah, please send somebody."

The game plan is that the siblings will wait for each other. They will stop for salah along the route. Eid Day will be on their road bikes as well. Climate Ride is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that organizes lifechanging charitable events to raise awareness and support sustainability, active transportation, and environmental causes. In 2015, the organization issued $875,011.00 in grants to 125 nonprofit organizations working on climate, conservation and active transportation issues. 28 percent of grants are designated for bicycle coalitions and active transportation work. 72 percent of grants are focused on conservation, climate and environmental work. Since 2008, Climate Ride has granted more than $3.2 Million to its beneficiaries. “This is an incredibly important time to inspire people and increase philanthropic support for sustainability. Climate Ride is ready to rise to the challenge,” said Caeli Quinn, Executive Director of Climate Ride. “Through our events, we combine fitness, extraordinary experiences and the beauty of the American landscape, while uniting businesses, individuals, and nonprofits around climate, conservation and active transportation. We’ve heard from so many of our supporters across the U.S. that they’d like to see a Climate Ride event closer to home. These new events will increase our national participation and the impact of our grants program on local and national nonprofits. It’s a win for our participants and a win for the planet,” she adds.

“We engage in the Climate Ride events to support a collection of beneficiary organizations that are working to engage citizens in the possibility of a green economy, educate the public about the interconnected web of environmental issues related to the climate crisis, mobilize government and businesses to enact sound energy policies that promote renewables, and raise the profile of green transportation.” “Muslims should support sustainable

causes.” The Muslim community needs to understand that these initiatives need our support, says Mohammed. This bike ride is a way to “raise awareness and do something for y[our] health. There are 70 year olds that ride bikes and this is considered unusual in our community.” The Hoques have slowly incorporated green choices in their life. From LED lightening to recycling to shopping at their local natural food store. “Our local MOMs [store] has been a major influence and educator. The NPCA team goal is

to raise $10,000. And Muhammad’s personal goal is $6,000. “I need to raise at least half of my goal to go on this ride. Summer Sizzles, ‘American Islam’ March Fizzles By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter On a scorching hot July 23, 2016, on the lawns of the National Mall with the Capitol building and the Washington monuments in clear view, several hundred people gathered for the American Muslim March on Washington: Liberty, Justice, Peace - a march against terrorism, hate, racism, and gun violence. Organized by a group in Florida called American Islam, Americans from all backgrounds were invited to attend. “If you want peace and support the celebration of diversity in the United States, this event is for you,” read the flier. ‘Muslims against ISIS’, ‘Islam is Peace’ signs dotted the mostly red, white and blue audience— many in star spangled hijabs, and camouflage fatigues— facing the stage. Instructions on the Eventbrite page included bringing a medium sized American flag and dressing in patriotic colors to show that ‘we are proud Americans’. “When terrorists attack we all stand together,” stated Imam Muhammad Musri, of Orlando, FL. He is the imam of the Islamic Society of Central Florida, and the president of American Islam, Inc, the main organizer of the march. As he stood on the stage at the event he was flanked by his interfaith partners, Rabbi Steven W. Engel and Rev. Bryan G. Fulwider. The trio is known as the Three Wise Guys in the Central Florida interfaith community, where they host a weekly radio program with the same title. The local sponsors included Muslim Community Center, Muslim Association of Virginia, ADAMS Center, MakeSpace, Islamic Society of Washington, Masjid Muhammad, Muslimaat al Nisa, IMAAM, McLean Islamic Center, First Hijrah Foundation amongst others. A young man sat with his friends in the front listening to speeches by politicians and other leaders. Muhammad Rasheed of Fairfax, Virginia is a student at George Mason University. “I came because it is important that in a time of divisiveness that we show our support in favor of togetherness and unity,” he said. “Muslims need to speak up against

violence and terrorism. We want love and peace in the USA and all over the world,” said Khudeja Ilyas of Sterling, VA, whose young daughters cheered in their girls Scouts uniforms, as Dr V White Muhammad of the American Muslim Democratic Caucus of Florida spoke about the history of Muslims in the United States. Saba Ahmed of Washington D.C., founder of the Republican Muslim Coalition, also spoke at the event. She had recently returned from the Republican Convention, which she attended along with at least 10 other Muslims, and spoke of the need for Muslim voices in the Republican party. She recently met with Trump and his vice-presidential pick, Mike Pence and Newt Gingrich. “We had a very open discussion about Sharia and how Muslims need to be involved with the discussions and how they really don’t know what the right solutions are. I think all of us are struggling with that. And I think involving Muslim Americans and bringing them to the policy tables is the right solution. I

would love to be involved with national security discussions, and I hope that more Muslims will step up and get involved with the campaign and policies.” Ahmed believes that Muslims need to proactively engage within the Republican Party and make a difference. She was especially concerned about the Republican Hindu Coalition, whose founder, a big businessman from Chicago, donated almost a million dollars to the Trump campaign because of Trump’s antiMuslim. “He was supportive of profiling Muslims, and he was talking about how he wants to enact policies against Pakistan. For me it was interesting to see the special interests working against Muslims,” reported Ahmed. Al Jazeera reported that organizers expected 100,000 to attend the rally. The spokeswoman for the event, Aleyda Almorei of Orlando, FL, told the Muslim Link that she knew of no such figures quoted by her organization. “Extreme heat

and [a] change in timing [also] deterred crowds,” she said.

In planning since last year, according to Almorei, the event was not in reaction to the Orlando shooting where a man, who was under FBI investigation for 10 months, shot 49 people at a nightclub, but against hate acts. “We have been suffering but were more motivated to stand up; we also added gun violence and racism to the agenda,” she said. 50 volunteers worked to get the event in order in Florida and 100 official volunteers were present at gathering. Imraan Siddiqui, of Phoenix, AZ, Executive Director of the Council of American Islamic Relations- Arizona chapter, says that the event could have been more successful if the organizers had coordinated closely with a national level group. He did not attend the event. >> MARCH Pg 12

The official Youtube advertisement for the event only has 396 views. National activist Jaylani Hussein of Minneapolis, MN, who is also the executive director of CAIR-Minnesota, said the event was ‘rushed’. “There was no consensus building. An effort like this requires great marketing; you [have to] be like Louis Farrakhan [to get traction],” he said,” they didn't have the broad support,” he added. He was in Washington D.C. to attend a national leadership summit a couple of weeks after the march. The small number of attendees gave fodder to Islamophobic websites. “Last minute, mismanaged events contribute to the anti-Muslim rhetoric,” stated an attendee from San Fernando, California, wishing to remain anonymous, “this event had no focus.” “I’m here with my family to support our religion also to give a good example to my kids of Islam and being Muslim,” said Yousry Othman, of Woodbridge, Virginia, who was there with his children including his 8 year old twins, Baher and Basel. “We don’t apologize, we condemn all these acts of hatred, racism,” said Almorei. When asked why the need to condemn, when it perpetually placed Muslims in the guilty by association category, she said that it is important to condemn as there is a lack of education about Islam and media delivers an incorrect message about Muslims. Commentator and blogger Sana Saeed disagrees with the idea of such marches. She writes: “... I'm tired of people in my communities constantly partaking in and creating public campaigns to put up a good face of our religion, condemn this group or that action and issuing this statement and that letter – I can't actually be angry with them. I can't blame them for wanting, so badly, to not have to hear the same questions again and again, day in and day out. I can't blame them for trying to show how they practice, envision and know Islam to an audience that only sees in black banners and white script...What we need is not the pacification of Islam vis a vis campaigns and rhetoric that are antithetical to our tradition and propel Jihad as only and primarily an internal struggle. What we need are not hashtags,

“Satan” is just a “metaphorical construct” intended to represent the rejection of all forms of tyranny over the human mind. The curriculum for the proposed afterschool clubs emphasizes the development of reasoning and social skills. The group says meetings will include a healthful snack, literature lesson, creative learning activities, a science lesson, puzzle solving and an art project. Every child will receive a membership card and must have a signed parentalpermission slip to attend. “We think it’s important for kids to be able to see multiple points of view, to reason things through, to have empathy and feelings of benevolence for their fellow human beings,” said the Satanic Temple’s Utah chapter head, who goes by the name Chalice Blythe. The emphasis on multiple perspectives is a hint pointing to the Temple’s true foe. The group at first intends to roll out the clubs in a limited number of schools in districts that also host an evangelical Christian after-school program known as the Good News Club. Good News Clubs, which are sponsored by an organization founded in 1937 called the Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF), aim to reach children as young as 5 with a fundamentalist form of evangelical Christianity. For most of their history, Good News Clubs were largely excluded from public schools out of concern that their presence would violate the Constitution. In 2001, in a case that commanded the resources of powerful legal advocacy groups on the religious right, including the Alliance Defending Freedom and the Liberty Counsel, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that to exclude an after-school program on account of the religious views of its sponsors amounted to a violation of free-speech rights. The CEF then went on a tear, and by 2011, it reported 3,560 Good News Clubs, putting them in more than 5 percent of the nation’s public elementary schools. The Satanic Temple makes no secret of its desire to use that same approach.

The Satanic Temple is eager to compete directly with the Good News Clubs and doesn’t hide its belief that its own after-school product is on the right side.

“We would like to thank the Liberty Counsel specifically for opening the doors to the After School Satan Clubs through their dedication to religious liberty,” Greaves explained to the gathering of chapter heads in Salem. “So, ‘the Satanic Temple leverages religious freedom laws that put after-school clubs in elementary schools nationwide.’ That’s going to be the message.”

directly with the Good News Clubs and doesn’t hide its belief that its own afterschool product is on the right side. “While the Good News Clubs focus on indoctrination, instilling children with a fear of hell and God’s wrath, After School Satan Clubs will focus on free inquiry and rationalism,” Greaves said. “We prefer to give children an appreciation of the natural wonders surrounding them, not

“We are only doing this because Good News Clubs have created a need for this. If Good News Clubs would operate in churches rather than public schools, that need would disappear. But our point is that if you let one religion into the public schools you have to let others, otherwise it’s an establishment of religion.”

The Liberty Counsel agrees that the Satanic Temple has a right to organize its clubs in public schools and takes the view that they can’t be banned so long as they’re not disruptive or engaging in rituals that put people at risk. “I would definitely oppose after-school Satanic clubs, but they have a First Amendment right to meet,” said Mat Staver, Liberty Counsel’s founder and chairman. “I suspect, in this particular case, I can’t imagine there’s going to be a lot of students participating in this. It’s probably dust they’re kicking up and is likely to fade away in the near future for lack of interest.” The Satanic Temple is eager to compete

a fear of an everlasting other-worldly horror.” Good News Club leaders have defended their organization’s presence in public schools. According to the Good News Club’s website, “each club includes a clear presentation of the Gospel and an opportunity for children to trust the Lord Jesus as Savior. Every club also includes strong discipleship training to build character and strengthen moral and spiritual growth.” Amy Jensen, a professional educator in Tucson who has a master’s degree in curriculum, instruction and teaching from the University of Denver, says she has

decided to lead an After School Satan Club after comparing its curriculum materials with those of the Good News Club. Jensen noted that the Satanic Temple’s materials say the group encourages benevolence and empathy among all people, and advocates practical common sense. “As a teacher, if I were deciding whether to teach that or the fear and hatred of other people’s beliefs, which is what Good News Clubs teach, I would choose what the Satanic Temple has available,” she said. Like all ASSC teachers, Jensen is a volunteer. To cover After School Satan Club costs, including facility use fees and curriculum materials, the Satanic Temple is launching a crowdfunding campaign — which is how it covers many of its initiatives. The blend of political activism, religious critique and performance art that characterizes the After School Satan Club proposal is not a new approach for the Satanic Temple. It is just the most recent in a series of efforts that have made the Temple famous and notorious. In 2014, after the Supreme Court ruled that the regular recitation of prayers before town meetings did not violate the First Amendment, provided that towns do not discriminate among religions, the Temple decided to test just how much religious liberty towns allowed. They volunteered to perform a Satanic benediction in an Arizona town where the board had regularly opened with a Christian prayer. In that case, the town preferred to abolish the practice of opening prayers. In this and other instances — such as when the Satanic Temple proposed the installation of a statue of Baphomet in Oklahoma in response to a stone monument emblazoned with the Ten Commandments — the thrust of the Temple’s activism has been to prevent religious groups from claiming the mantle of implicit state endorsement. The group’s activism has much in common with a movement started a decade ago, when Bobby Henderson of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster penned an

“The Church of FSM is legit, and backed by hard science. Anything that comes across as humor or satire is purely coincidental,” Henderson says on his website. “Let me make this clear: we are not anti-religion, we are anti-crazy nonsense done in the name of religion. There is a difference.”

open letter to the Kansas School Board in 2005, citing fears that the introduction of teaching religious intelligent design alongside the theory of evolution would inculcate public school students with Christian thought. Henderson argued that believing that there is a benevolent deity made of spaghetti and meatballs is just as legitimate as believing in God. Believers in the Flying Spaghetti Monster took on the name “Pastafarians.”

Greaves likewise insists that the Satanic Temple is much more than satire: “We’ve moved well beyond being a simple political ploy and into being a very sincere movement that seeks to separate religion from superstition,” he said.

Like the Satanic Temple, the Pastafarians insist that theirs is a genuine religion. According to Henderson, who published “The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti

opposition to its after-school proposal. When the group sought to erect the Baphomet monument, the Oklahoma governor’s office dismissed the proposal as “absurd,” and right-wing activists joined the attack. Given the fight ahead and the long odds of pushing Christianity out of public schools, an important question about the After School Satan Clubs is: Does the Satanic Temple really want religion — even its own — in public schools? Greaves is blunt: “We are only doing this because Good News Clubs have created a need for this. If Good News Clubs would operate in churches rather than public schools, that need would disappear. But our point is that if you let one religion into the public schools you have to let

others, otherwise it’s an establishment of religion.” In the 2001 Supreme Court ruling, Justice David Souter penned a scathing dissent. He suggested that the decision would bring about a world in which “any public school opened for civic meetings must be opened for use as a church, synagogue, or mosque.” The Satanic Temple probably wasn’t front and center in his thinking. Yet it appears determined to prove him correct. Stewart is a Boston-based journalist. CCR Asks Supreme Court Not to Review Appellate Court Decision Allowing 9/11 Case Against Ashcroft to Proceed reviled since Japanese internment,” said CCR Senior Staff Attorney Rachel Meeropol. “My clients have been fighting for justice for 14 years. Now, more than ever, our courts must send a strong message that racial and religious profiling violates the law, and those who engage in it will be held accountable.”

August 8, 2016, New York – Today, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) opposed the Obama administration’s request that the U.S. Supreme Court review an appellate court ruling that high-level former Bush administration officials may be sued for their roles in the post-9/11 immigration detentions, abuse, and profiling of Muslim, Arab, and South Asian men. The former officials named as defendants in the case are FBI director Robert Mueller, INS Commissioner James Ziglar, and Attorney General John Ashcroft, who is alleged to have ordered the INS and FBI to search out individuals with ties to terrorism by, among other means, looking for Muslim-sounding names in the phonebook. The plaintiffs in Turkmen v. Ashcroft and other men detained after 9/11, though only charged with civil immigration violations such as overstaying a visa or working without authorization, were

Chicago Police Sued for Attacking Muslim Woman, Stripping Her of Headscarf By Abigail Hauslohner and Kristine Guerra

resident Itemid Al Matar, a 32-year-old Saudi student.

A Muslim woman is suing the city of Chicago and six Chicago police officers for tackling her on the stairs of a subway station, stripping her of her headscarf and violating her civil rights on the Fourth of July last year.

Al Matar, who covers her full body, head and face in the conservative Saudi style of dress, known as niqab, was on her way home on July 4, 2015, and was running up the stairs to catch a train, when a group of police officers ran up behind her, “grabbed [her] and threw her down upon the stair landing,” according to the lawsuit.

Washington Post, August 12, 2016

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim advocacy group, on Thursday announced the federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of Chicago

“They ripped off the face covering and the head covering, as well as pulled up her shirt, exposing her midriff, and pulled

down her pants,” said Ahmed Rehab, the executive director of CAIR’s Chicago office. “She made the choice to cover her body, and someone came along and exposed her in this violent manner. It was humiliating.” Al Matar, who had come to the United States about a year prior to study English, was frightened and shocked, according to Rehab. “At first she thought they were robbers, and when she saw that they were in uniform, she couldn’t believe her eyes.” The lawsuit alleges that the police acted

with prejudice and “with malice.” Al Matar was arrested and eventually charged with resisting arrest and reckless behavior — charges that she was cleared of in court, and which Rehab said amounted to a “an attempt at a cover up” by a police department that “knew they had done something that was unprovoked and unwarranted.” The Department of Justice is currently >> SUED Pg 16

The Obama administration asked the full Second Circuit court to review that decision, but that request was denied. In an opinion concurring with the denial, Judges Richard C. Wesley and Rosemary S. The length of our efforts now fills many pages. In our view, it is time to move the case forward. The Chicago Police Department declined to comment due to the pending lawsuit. The lawsuit charges that Al Matar was subject to the use of excessive force, false arrest, unlawful search, a violation of the freedom of religious expression as defined by the first and fourth constitutional amendments, and malicious prosecution. The police incident report filed at the time that Al Matar was tackled says that the officers in question “were on high alert for terrorist activity” when they saw Al Matar “exiting the station with her entire face concealed by a scarf, hat and sunglasses.” She was “clutching a backpack with her right arm to her chest and walking at a brisk pace in a determined manner,” the incident report continues. to stop, and did not — causing the police to believe that she “might be a lone wolf suicide bomber.” The report says that Al Matar “pulled away” and ignored verbal instruction before they tackled her. A partial video of the incident shows Al Matar walking up the stairs with four officers coming up behind her. She does not turn around, nor does anyone else on the stairs — something that Rehab said shows that the police made no verbal attempt to stop her. Once on the ground, the police incident report describes Al Matar as “furiously clutching her backpack and appeared to be trying to reach for something.” Al Matar appeared to have “possible incindiary [sic] devices strapped around her ankles.” As police searched her, Al Matar was screaming and crying, the report said — something that caused “considerable alarm to CTA patrons.”

Her backpack turned out to contain food to break her Ramadan fast. She was walking with ankle weights. “They ask me why I put my food inside bag, why I’m Muslim, why I’m fasting, why I wear this clothes, why I cover my body,” Al Matar told CBS Chicago. On June 30, a Chicago judge dismissed one charge and foud her not guilty of all charges. “As far as we’re concerned, policing ought to be concerned with criminal behavior and violations of the law, not with the way people dress or the color of their skin,” said Rehab. Al Matar has asked that the case be tried before a jury.

French Riviera City Bans Specialty Swimsuit For Muslim Women NPR, August 12, 2016 JASON SLOTKIN The French Riviera city of Cannes has banned beachgoers from wearing a swimsuit designed for Muslim women, called a burkini, citing the recent Islamist violence. Going into effect late last month, a city ordinance bans the burkini as well as any swimwear that "ostentatiously displays religious affiliation, when France ... City ordinances in Cannes effectively forbade the burkini as well as swimwear that "ostentatiously displays religious affiliation, when France and places of worship are currently the target of terrorist attacks." Associated Press quotes as calling the burkini "the symbol of Islamist extremism." Anyone caught violating the law — which lasts through August — will be asked to change or leave the beach, and could be fined 38 euros (or approximately $42) the BBC reports. There's been no word on whether officials plan to extend the ban through September. The burkini ban is far from the first such ban in France. In 2011, the country became the first European nation to ban the face-obscuring burqa. And earlier this week, a water park in the city of Marseille canceled a burkini-only event scheduled for September after complaints, according to the BBC.

killed 84 people some 20 miles from Cannes. Furthermore, France's secular tradition has often put law at odds with Islam. Reporting earlier this year on Islamic fashion in France, NPR's Eleanor Beardsley explained the place secularism has in France: "French secularism was established by a 1905 law that strictly separated the church and state. At the time, the law aimed to keep a powerful Catholic church from dictating policy. While secularism is meant to ensure the state's neutrality with regard to religion and ensure that all religions can practice freely, many feel it is now being exhorted to discourage religion — especially Islam." Eleanor also noted the country is struggling to "balance tolerance, secularism and personal freedom" following repeated attacks.

In an email to Idaho State faculty and students in mid-April, the university’s president, Arthur C. Vailas, said the homes of about 50 Middle Eastern students had been burglarized over several weeks. “As a result of these crimes, some of our students are seriously considering leaving I.S.U. and Pocatello,” the email said. The burglaries followed reports that 17 vehicles, many belonging to Middle Eastern students, were vandalized last year, Vailas’s email said. Also, DVDs containing hate messages were left on a number of car windshields on campus. Saudi and Kuwaiti students make up onetenth of the population at Idaho State.

day will expiate for the sins of two years. These days also include Yawm al-Nahar (the Day of Sacrifice), the greatest day of the entire year and the greatest day of Hajj, which combines acts of worship in a way unlike any other day. These ten days include the days of sacrifice and of Hajj.

Praise be to Allaah Who has created Time and has made some times better than others, some months and days and nights better than others, when rewards are multiplied many times, as a mercy towards His slaves. This encourages them to do more righteous deeds and makes them more eager to worship Him, so that the Muslim renews his efforts to gain a greater share of reward, prepare himself for death and supply himself in readiness for the Day of Judgment. This season of worship brings many benefits, such as the opportunity to correct one’s faults and make up for any shortcomings or anything that one might have missed. Every one of these special occasions involves some kind of worship through which the slaves may draw closer to Allaah, and some kind of blessing though which Allaah bestows His favour and mercy upon whomsoever He will. The happy person is the one who makes the most of these special months, days and hours and draws nearer to his Lord during these times through acts of worship; he will most likely be touched by the blessing of Allaah and will feel the joy of knowing that he is safe from the flames of Hell. (Ibn Rajab, al-Lataa’if, p.8) The Muslim must understand the value of his life, increase his worship of Allaah and persist in doing good deeds until the moment of death. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "And worship your Lord until there comes unto you the certainty." [al-Hijr 15:99] The mufassireen (commentators) said: "‘The certainty’ means death." Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him and his father) also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "There is no deed more precious in the sight of Allaah, nor greater in reward, than a good deed done during

the ten days of Sacrifice." He was asked, "Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah?" He said, "Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing." (Reported by al-Daarimi, 1/357; its isnaad is hasan as stated in alIrwaa’, 3/398). These texts and others indicate that these ten days are better than all the other days of the year, with no exceptions, not even the last ten days of Ramadaan. But the last ten nights of Ramadaan are better, because they include Laylat al-Qadr ("the Night of Power"), which is better than a thousand months. Thus the various reports may be reconciled. (See Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 5/412). The virtue of these ten days is based on many things: Allaah swears an oath by them, and swearing an oath by something is indicative of its importance and great benefit. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "By the dawn; by the ten nights" [al-Fajr 89:1-2]. Ibn ‘Abbaas, Ibn al-Zubayr, Mujaahid and others of the earlier and later generations said that this

refers to the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah. Ibn Katheer said: "This is the correct opinion." (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 8/413) The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) encouraged people to do righteous deeds because of the virtue of this season for people throughout the world, and also because of the virtue of the place - for the Hujjaaj (pilgrims) to the Sacred House of Allaah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded us to recite a lot of Tasbeeh ("Subhan-Allaah"), Tahmeed ("Al-hamdu Lillaah") and Takbeer ("Allaahu akbar") during this time. ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "There are no days greater in the sight of Allaah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so during this time recite a great deal of Tahleel ("La ilaaha ill-Allaah"), Takbeer and Tahmeed." (Reported by Ahmad, 7/224; Ahmad Shaakir stated that it is saheeh). These ten days include Yawm ‘Arafaah (the Day of ‘Arafaah), on which Allaah perfected His Religion. Fasting on this

Concerning the types of worship to be performed during these ten days: one must understand that these days are a great blessing from Allaah to His slave, which is appreciated properly by the actively righteous. It is the Muslim’s duty to appreciate this blessing and make the most of the opportunity, by devoting these ten days to paying more attention to striving hard in worship. Among His blessings to His slaves, Allaah has given us many ways in which to do good and worship Him, so that the Muslim may be constantly active and consistent in his worship of his Lord. Among the good deeds which the Muslim should strive to do during the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah are: Fasting. It is Sunnah to fast on the ninth day of Dhu’l-Hijjah, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) urged us to do good deeds during this time, and fasting is one of the best of deeds. Allaah has chosen fasting for Himself, as is stated in the hadeeth qudsi: "Allaah says: ‘All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him, except for fasting, which is for Me and I am the One Who will reward him for it.’" (Reported by alBukhaari, 1805). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the first nine days of Dhu’l-Hijjah. It was narrated from Hunaydah ibn Khaalid from his wife, that one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: The Prophet (peace and

blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the first nine days of Dhu’l-Hijjah and the day of ‘Ashoora’, and three days each month, the first Monday of the month and two Thursdays. Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 4/205 and by Abu Dawood; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 2/462. Takbeer. It is Sunnah to say Takbeer ("Allaahu akbar"), Tahmeed ("Al-hamdu Lillaah"), Tahleel ("La ilaha ill-Allaah") and Tasbeeh ("Subhaan Allaah") during the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, and to say it loudly in the mosque, the home, the street and every place where it is permitted to remember Allaah and mention His name out loud, as an act of worship and as a proclamation of the greatness of Allaah, may He be exalted. Men should recite these phrases out loud, and women should recite them quietly. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "That they might witness things that are of benefit to them (i.e., reward of Hajj in the Hereafter, and also some worldly gain from trade, etc.), and mention the name of Allaah on appointed days, over the beast of cattle that He has provided for them (for sacrifice)..." [al-Hajj 22:28] The majority of scholars agree that the "appointed days" are the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, because of the words of Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him and his father): "The ‘appointed days’ are the first ten days (of Dhu’l-Hijjah)." The Takbeer may include the words "Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, la ilaaha ill-Allaah; wa Allaahu akbar wa Lillaahi’lhamd (Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, there is no god but Allaah; Allaah is Most Great and to Allaah be praise)," as well as other phrases. Takbeer at this time is an aspect of the Sunnah that has been forgotten, especially during the early part of this period, so much so that one hardly ever hears Takbeer, except from a few people. This Takbeer should be pronounced loudly, in order to revive the Sunnah and as a reminder to the negligent. There is sound evidence that Ibn ‘Umar and Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with

....

them) used to go out in the marketplace during the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, reciting Takbeer, and the people would recite Takbeer when they heard them. The idea behind reminding the people to recite Takbeer is that each one should recite it individually, not in unison, as there is no basis in Sharee’ah for doing this. Reviving aspects of the Sunnah that have been virtually forgotten is a deed that will bring an immense reward, as is indicated

Qur’an, remembering Allaah, making supplication (du’aa’), giving charity, honouring his parents, upholding the ties of kinship, enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil, and other good deeds and acts of worship. Sacrifice. One of the good deeds that will bring a person closer to Allaah during these ten days is offering a sacrifice, by choosing a high-quality

The happy person is the one who makes the most of these special months, days and hours and draws nearer to his Lord during these times through acts of worship; he will most likely be touched by the blessing of Allaah

by the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): "Whoever revives an aspect of my Sunnah that is forgotten after my death, he will have a reward equivalent to that of the people who follow him, without it detracting in the least from their reward." (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, 7/443; this is a hasan hadeeth because of corroborating asaaneed).

Performing Hajj and ‘Umrah. One of the best deeds that one can do during these ten days is to perform Hajj to the Sacred House of Allaah. The one whom Allaah helps to go on Hajj to His House and to perform all the rituals properly is included in the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): "An accepted Hajj brings no less a reward than Paradise." Doing more good deeds in general, because good deeds are beloved by Allaah and will bring a great reward from Him. Whoever is not able to go to Hajj should occupy himself at this blessed time by worshipping Allaah, praying (salaat), reading

past. Repentance is obligatory at all times, but when the Muslim combines sincere repentance with good deeds during the days of most virtue, this is a sign of success, in sha Allaah. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "But as for him who repented, believed and did righteous deeds, then he will be among those who are successful." [al-Qasas 28:67] The Muslim should make sure that he does not miss any of these important occasion, because time is passing quickly. Let him prepare himself by doing good deeds which will bring him reward when he is most in need of it, for no matter how much reward he earns, he will find it is less than he needs; the time of departure is at hand, the journey is frightening, delusions are widespread, and the road is long, but Allaah is ever watchful, and to Him will we return and render account. As the Qur’aan says (interpretation of the meaning):

animal and fattening it, spending money for the sake of Allaah. (more information to follow, in sha Allaah).

"So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom, shall see it, And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom, shall see it." [alZalzalah 99:7-8]

Sincere repentance. One of the most important things to do during these ten days is to repent sincerely to Allaah and to give up all kinds of disobedience and sin. Repentance means coming back to Allaah and foregoing all the deeds, open and secret, that He dislikes, out of regret for what has passed, giving it up immediately and being determined never to return to it, but to adhere firmly to the Truth by doing what Allaah loves.

There is much to be gained, so make the most of the opportunity afforded by these invaluable and irreplaceable ten days. Hasten to do good works, before death strikes, before one can regret one’s negligence and failure to act, before one is asked to return to a place where no prayers will be answered, before death intervenes between the hopeful one and the things he hopes for, before you are trapped with your deeds in the grave.

If a Muslim commits a sin, he must hasten to repent at once, without delay, firstly because he does not know when he will die, and secondly because one evil deed leads to another.

O you whose hard heart is as dark as the night, is it not time that your heart was filled with light and became soft? Expose yourself to the gentle breeze of your Lord’s mercy during these ten days, for Allaah will cause this breeze to touch whomever He wills, and whoever is touched by it will be happy on the Day of Judgement. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad and all his Family and Companions.

Repentance at special times is very important because in most cases people’s thoughts turn towards worship at these times, and they are keen to do good, which leads to them recognizing their sins and feeling regret for the

management informed Maryum Center management of the need to vacate, it “pushed their intention to move”. “People tend to hesitate to come to Jumuah if they have to pass by a dancing studio on the way. We could hear music during services and that was the main problem,” said Imam Mahmoud Abdel Hady. “It is a good, central location with [Muslim] businesses nearby and they have [already] started coming … Alhamdulillah, the first Jummah was packed with a 140-150 people congratulating us. They were very excited to have a new place,” shared Mahfouz. According to Imam Abdel Hady, the BOT is planning to make an active visit to neighboring businesses to get to know them so if the neighbors concerns regarding parking or other issues they know who to speak with. The BOT plans on knocking down a few walls to create an open space which is custom fit for classrooms with room dividers. “The musallah will [have] a multipurpose [use],” adds Mahfouz.

formulated Maryum Center at the beginning and is still growing strong,” said Blake. MIC is continuing and enhancing this program by adding a new Youth Sisters program with Sister Shehlla Khan. This will be conducted at the same time as the mature sisters halaqah-11:30 on Sunday mornings. Physical activities are planned after the halaqa and lunch, such as tennis at the Owen Brown Tennis Courts and walks by Lake Elkhorn. The Islamic Center is an active member of the community organizing group, PATH (People Acting Together in Howard). “Mother of three and engineer, Shehlla Khan has been a top PATH leader on our environmental jobs campaigns,” notes the Path website. Khan is a member of MIC. When she heard from many women at her masjid that they wanted womenonly swimming time for exercise and to teach their children to swim, she rallied with PATH and asked the Columbia Association (CA) to create a women's swimming time. “Hate groups found out about the campaign and flooded the paper and CA with calls and emails. In response, 70 PATH leaders stood behind Shehlla at the next CA board meeting as she spoke about the importance of what CA had done. This issue resonated with many women of other faiths and the board unanimously adopted the program.

S i s t e r Saff iyah B la ke he ld a successful camp over the summer for the congregation’s kids. Out of this camp a computer class for young programmers evolved.

MIC will not be holding any Get Out and Vote activities in this election year. “If there is injustice in the county, we are politically active through PATH,” said Imam Abdel Hady.

“We had someone on the summer camp team who was excited about how a computer works so he held a class and the children [pretended] they were computers so they could understand [how a computer functions]. Activities for the youth will include foosball and table tennis at the center.

MIC has also started a database of Muslim businesses in the area called Muslimflier.com — a list of halal food, female doctors etc. A beginners Arabic language class is also upcoming at Maryum Islamic Center. To learn more, visit the center online at maryumcenter.com.

well as several elected officials centered the discussion around the concerns of Muslims, sandwiched between the San Bernardino and Orlando shootings. Elected to the Senate in 2006, Maryland’s junior Senator currently serves as Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Cardin is a senior member of the Environment & Public Works Committee (EPW) and Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee. He also serves on the Senate Finance Committee (SFC). He has been a Commissioner on the U.S. Helsinki Commission since 1993, serving as Chairman of the Commission in the 111th and 113th Congress. In 2015, he was named as the Special Representative on Anti-Semitism, Racism, and Intolerance for the 57-nation Organization Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly. He has served as the Ranking Member of the SFRC East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy Subcommittee and previously was the Chairman of the International Development and Foreign Assistance Subcommittee. The Senator spoke after an introduction by President of PGCMC Jameel AalimJohnson, the floor was open for questions. during travel, wearing hijab. She wanted to know what the senator could do for his Muslim constituents.

Imam Ahmad Azzari, of Prince George’s County Muslim Association, questioned the support of the United States government for the current Egyptian government considering it came to power through a military coup of an democratically elected government.

“We appreciate the condemnation of Islamophobia but actions speak louder than words,” said Dieng, “we need action.” The senator was asked for changes to institutionalize with the passage and implementation of law. “What steps is he ready to take? We need to build a bridge between his office and us,” she commented.

Another concern brought up was terminology like ‘radical Islam’ and ‘jihadist’ used by a lot of conservatives. Some in the meeting felt that these terms are purposely being used to demonize Islam itself. The senator assured the attendees that these are terms that he does not use. “A big problem is that Muslims are starting to use these terms as well,” commented an attendee. A spotlight was also shone on the issue of bullying of Muslim students in school. ‘Between the news items and the rhetoric used to discuss Islam, Muslim students are suffering’— a former principal conveyed to the senator. The attendees brought up that in Prince George’s County, teachers, staff and even Muslims in administration deal with bullying and isolation because of their faith. Madeleine Dieng, a registered pediatric nurse who works with children with special needs in the Medicaid population, a mother of four, a member of the public relation committee at PGMA, is a director of the Islamic Freedom Foundation. The senator promised a dedicated liaison on his staff for the Muslim community. Sharif Salim, the Community Liaison at DCA, stated that it was a ‘good visit’. “He took the time, spoke with compassion in regard to Muslims and some for the obstacles we are facing. He was supportive of Muslim efforts and contributions. He stayed away from the current electoral year rhetoric that we are in,” shared Salim. A request made to the Senator was that qualified Muslim names be kept in mind when nominations (executive or judicial) or recommendations to different commissions, civilian committees, courts, judgeships, etc. are required. Those Muslims already in positions should be considered for promotion, if satisfied with their performances. “Voices are heard if coming from within the commission as opposed to people speaking on their behalf,” said Aalim-Johnson. “He was sincere about the effort and didn’t mince words and gave us more time than expected. It’s the beginning of a positive relationship- the weight is on us to take follow up steps,” said Aalim-Johnson to

the Muslim Link. “The squeaky wheel gets the oil,” reminded Aalim- Johnson, who pledged to follow up with Cardin’s staff on the requests made by attendees and urged others to do so as well. Resumes should be ready for Muslims who are qualified to sit on governing bodies. “The Prince George's County Muslim Council appreciates the outreach by Senator Cardin and his staff to our community during this time when the rhetoric disparaging Islam and Muslims may be at an all time high. The frank and open discussion with the Senator just what is needed to improve understanding and develop relationships,” read a statement released by the council. “We look forward to working with Senator Cardin to address the needs of the Muslim community and those of our fellow neighbors in Prince George's County.” A similar event took place in Baltimore County. “[Senator Cardin] is there for our religious rights and embraces us as part of the American fabric,” commented Aalim-Johnson. He will continue to work closer with Muslims particularly PGCMC regardless of who is in the Oval Office. The senator said that he would return for other events. “He shared that he had recently been to Turkey and was impressed with the Diyanet Center and the cultural outreach of the largest Islamic campus in the Western hemisphere,” said Sharif Salim. The Senator was given a tour of 16th century Ottoman style masjid.

A Muslim Anti-war Letter to Khizr and Ghazala Khan and Muslim Americans. Khizr Khan, father of Humayun Khan, spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on July 28th. Humayun Khan died in Iraq while serving in the US army. Khizr Khan’s speech has been shared millions of times. Here is an excerpt where he is addressing Donald Trump, “Have you ever been to Arlington Cemetery? Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending the United States of America. You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing and no one. We cannot solve our problems by building walls, sowing division. We are stronger together. And we will keep getting stronger when Hillary Clinton becomes our President.” Khizr Saheb, Ghazala Khala and the Muslim American community, I see you both. Standing there, teary eyed. Khala, in you especially, I see my mother. She too wears glasses. She looks a little like you too. I see you, the Muslim community, sharing these images. Newspapers report that the Khans lived in Dubai for a time. So did I. My father was a blue collar migrant worker who worked in a hospital there. The newspapers say Khizr Saheb, you are a Harvard educated lawyer, so perhaps our families didn’t run into each other. I can see your loss and the need for you to believe that your son died for something important. I understand that one of the only ways to accept your unbearable grief

is to insist it was for a greater good. But it wasn’t. The United States did not attack Iraq to defend itself. There were no weapons of mass destruction, there was no imminent threat, there was no danger to the American way of life. Your son died in a war of aggression. He was not defending, he was part of the oppressors. Khizr Saheb, you said we cannot solve our problems by building walls and sowing divisions. That is true. One of the most fundamental divisions in our world is between the United States and its friends and the rest of us. If there is a wall, it is made up of nearly 1,000 United States military bases in over 63 countries that seek to dominate, repress, coerce, exploit and intimidate the peoples of the world. It is this wall, bristling with guns, missiles, gunboats and fighter jets that has plunged our world into economic and social crises for generations. Khizr Saheb you said that like many immigrants you came to the United States empty-handed. Many Muslim Americans sharing your story know this intimately. But this empty handed was and is a result of the actions of the United States and its counterparts. That same wall of bullets is the one that impoverishes us all. This United States’ wealth stems from the theft of Indigenous land, the enslavement of African people, and the exploitation of women, and racialized people here and the world over. This wealth is not

People like Donald Trump, and Hilary Clinton do not sacrifice anything or anyone. It is always, the poor, the racialized, the excluded. We die, for them. For their lies and their profit. After saving enough money, AbdulMannan bought out an existing Indian restaurant three years and his very first guests were the unhoused men and women he invited to eat after pursuing them in streets and alleys and parks around Mayur Kabab House— 3 blocks from the White House. Mayur means peacocks in Hindi — an emblem of love, compassion, good-will, and kindheartedness. He says that he tore up the alcohol license that accompanied the restaurant — it can cost anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 dollars to get a liquor license in that area. “It had no meaning to me,” says Abdul Mannan. He shares photos of his less fortunate guests on his Facebook page. “This gentleman is my friend and he had been homeless for long time. [H]e loves to talk to me every day but almost 80% of conversations I don't understand but I love to listen him anyway because it's make him feel good. Please open your heart for homeless. [T]ry to listen them you will be very bless[ed].”

The recent media attention worries him. “Your niyyah is like carrying a pot made of clay. One misstep and you could drop it and break it.” After testing a few cooks, now his brother, Fazlur Rahman, is the chef and his 17-year-old son mans the register. Abdul Mannan’s wife and the rest of his children still live in Pakistan. The spices and even the tea is imported from Pakistan for an authentic flavor. “Its good food and you are nice,” says a customer who came to pick up a catering order for her staff meeting. She met Abdul Mannan at a special State Department delegation for small business owners from India and Pakistan. As long as the restaurant is open, anyone who can not afford a meal is welcome to eat for free. Abdul-Mannan called them blessings. He is opening another branch in the heart of Chinatown. degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Prosecutors said the NYPD's ballistics lab tested the gun. "It has been determined that the bullets used to kill the victims in this case were in fact fired from the revolver that was recovered from the defendant's basement apartment," McCormick told the judge.

At the arraignment, attended by Akonjee and Uddin's family as well as Morel's, Queens Assistant District Attorney Peter McCormick called the killing a "coldblooded, premeditated assassination" and asked Morel to be remanded. Leonard Ressler, Morel's attorney, told the court that Morel "did not make any form of admission" to police. "In fact, he denies and insists that this case proceed as rapidly as possible," Ressler said.

Prosecutors also said video surveillance near the scene of the shooting captured Morel emerging from his black GMC Trailblazer, walking and running to where Akonjee and Uddin were shot, and running back to his car before leaving.

Queens Criminal Court Judge Karen Gopee ordered Morel held without bail. A grand jury hearing was scheduled for Friday. If convicted, Morel faces life in prison without parole.

"In one of the still photographs that was lifted from the video, during questioning by the detectives in this case, the defendant admitted that the person in the still video was in fact himself."

Before the arraignment, members of the Muslim community gathered outside the courthouse, calling for justice in a double homicide that comes at a time of heightened Islamophobia.

Mohammid Iqval Ali, a supporter outside the courthouse who said he lived in Ozone Park until recently and attended the mosque, told reporters there have long been tensions between Muslims and other ethnic groups, including Hispanics, in the community.

While praising the Queens District Attorney for bringing first-degree murder charges, supporters of the imam and his associate also said they wanted Morel to be charged with a hate crime.

"We're people who get along, but we're easily targeted," he said. "They're looking to rob, they're looking to create fights in the neighborhood, and were easily targeted as Bangladeshi Muslims."

"My father was a very good guy," the imam's son, Saif Akonjee, said at a news conference. "I don't know why he killed my father."

NYPD Police Commissioner William Bratton said at a news conference Monday that detectives developed a strong lead in the shootings following an unrelated hit-and-run of a bicyclist in Brooklyn 10 minutes after the double murder.

The motive for the shooting was unclear, police said. At a press conference Monday evening before Morel was arrested and charged with murder, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert K. Boyce declined to comment on Morel's mental state, but said a hate-crime was "certainly on the table." Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement Tuesday that a hate crime was one of the motives being explored. "Regardless, however, whether a hate crime was committed in this case, the crime will be vigorously prosecuted and we will seek the most serious penalties that our law allows," Brown said.

On surveillance video, detectives identified a black GMC Trailblazer fleeing the scene of the shooting in a "quick fashion" and also identified the person running into the vehicle, Boyce said. Mashuk Uddin, the brother of the imam's associate, was among those from the Muslim community outside the courthouse who said they believed the murder was a hate crime.

64, from behind and fire shots from a handgun. The shooter then sprints away from the scene, at Liberty Avenue and 79 Street in Ozone Park, as both victims fall to the ground.

A gun and clothes similar to those worn by the suspected shooter were found at Morel's home in East New York, Brooklyn, according to NBC New York, which quoted police sources close to the

Surveillance video shows Morel allegedly approach Akonjee, 55, and Uddin,

General as he presented the day’s agenda. The first such leaders summit held in December 2015 resulted in resolutions to host a drive to register one million voters prior to the 2016 presidential election, to launch a “One America” campaign to enhance understanding of American Muslims and Islam, and to organize a “National Open Mosque Day” on October 23, 2016 to help increase interactions and understanding between American Muslims and people of other faiths. Another day of planning and exchange of concerns and strategies followed on July 27, 2016. Linda Sarsour, Brooklyn, NY, of MPower Change, was concerned about grassroots organizing for the elections. “What does our plan look like? What states are we going to be in? What is the focus? How many mosques?” she asked. A decision was made to create an appropriate structure to implement One Million Voter Registration campaign with committees at central, state, and local levels. “We are excited to move forward with the strategies we discussed for the next phase of the One America Campaign and get the community mobilized for the 2016 elections,” stated Jammal. “Politicians cannot take us for granted, we have asks —some long term and some immediate,” said Jammal. “Hillary can

In that case, Morel was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and assaulting police officers, authorities said.

Black Lives Matter, police brutality, gun violence, climate change, a humane refugee policy, comprehensive immigration reform, civil rights and liberties and economic and racial justice were discussed and dissected. There was discussions on the framing and adoption

Boyce added that Morel's vehicle would also be brought to a facility to be searched. Monday afternoon, around 1,000 people packed the streets about six blocks from where the shooting happened for a service for Akonjee and Uddin, according to NBC New York. Also in attendance were elected officials, including Mayor Bill de Blasio. Some chanted "justice" periodically throughout the service, NBC New York reported.

"It is a painful time, but it is a time we will reaffirm that in this city, an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us," he said at the Monday evening news conference. "And we will work together to encourage the kind of harmony, the kind of unity that New Yorkers believe in, and will work against these divisive voices that have become so strong in our country."

At the Monday news conference, de Blasio said the NYPD will be out in

A tight focus on domestic and foreign policy, addressing Countering Violent Extremism initiatives, law enforcement targeting of Muslims, agent provocateurs, transparency and accountability of law enforcement, anti bias training for masajid leaders, staff, and khutbahs addressing intra-Muslim racism were points brought up by participants.

Lack of empirical data on Muslims was a concern for Suhaib Syed of Houston,TX and for Ghazala Salam of Weston, FL. Salam is the president of the American Muslim Democratic Caucus of Florida.

Hussam Ayloush of Anaheim, CA, Executive Director of CAIR-LA, who led one of the sessions shared the need of keeping foreign policy in focus along with domestic issues as American Muslims are

affected by both. The One America Campaign by USCMO is scheduled for September 11, 2016. “We are requesting all mosques and Muslim organizations in the U.S. to conduct a voter registration drive on Eidul-Adha on September 11, 2016.” Some instructions shared by the Council are practical like notifying the county clerk or county election officer and getting forms and supplies together. The organization urges masajid to invite candidates and elected officials to the Eid prayer, regardless of party affiliation, (candidate lists are available from the county office) and asking the Eid khateebs to give a khutbah related to the campaign. Marketing material is available on the USCMO website for the One American Campaign that groups can download and print locally. Groups are urged to e-mail USCMO photos and a brief summary of the voter registration drive at rameez@ icnacsj.org) so the organization can keep a tally. Local teams in all states will be forming to conduct or help with voter registration drives, getting out the vote, and planning for the Masjid Open Houses. The official platform for American Muslims will be released in the upcoming weeks, says USCMO.

If a person had a stream outside his door and he bathed in it five times a day, do you think he would have any filth left on him?” The people said, “No filth would remain on him whatsoever.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) then said, “That is like the fi ve daily prayers: Allah wipes away the sins by them.” ---Hadith in Sahih al Bukhari and Muslim

She passed away on Thursday after a long battle with disease. Alhamduli'Allah recently Sr. Shellie's mother took Shahada and we ask Allah to accept her among the righteous in the highest of heavens. A Message from Sister Shellie: "I am personally honored that Allah chose me to be her daughter and All the benefits that came with that title. I had the privilege to be the chosen sibling to be a caregiver for my mom and for the last three months I took that job Very seriously. She told me constantly that I was doing too much, I told her I am getting the blessings - InshaAllah. She said, "I didn't know you had to work so hard for blessings." My mom took her Shahadah less than a week ago, but I guess I should have known it was coming. She traveled alot and always took a Quran. She was always the first call I receive to say, "Eid Mubarak!" She loved to hear dawah from Ali, and always called him up to talk with peers when they spoke negatively about Islam. Alhamdililah to the community for showing such a great example of the Deen to me and my family during these last three

months. I wish I could list those who made things so much easier, but you all know who you are and what you did. She knew the support I had and dawah comes in so many forms. Thanks to all those who extended condolences to my family and me. May Allah grant her the Highest Jannah, May Allah have Mercy on her soul." A Letter To the Muslim Community in the West: from a Neighbor To the Muslim Community in the West: I want to thank you for all that your predecessors have given, that you give, and that your descendants will give to humanity, for all the stories of your soul that have been molded by a harsh landscape and a strong faith, as strong and supple as a spider web stretched across the entrance of a cave. I want to thank you for your understanding of excellence, seeing the quality of the arts and sciences as flowing back to the glory of God in this world and a flowering of our relationship with Him, and for remembering that physical realities mirror and are integrally bound up with spiritual ones. I want to thank you for your historical achievements in the areas of mathematics, astronomy, architecture, medicine, literature, cuisine, and beyond, for your brilliance in the world of learning and letters, for the shining example of your golden age which added the spices of preservation and flavor on so many levels to our society. I want to thank you for the game of chess and the drink of coffee, the cinematic quality of The Message and the musical quality of Loreena McKennitt’s Islam-inspired compositions, for your influence on Flamenco and your creation of the telescope, for your timeless art of tale-telling, for our Arabic number system and algebraic equations, and those things that are uniquely your own, such as the wearing of the hijab. I want to thank you for mystical beauty of your geometric design, finding the workings of the divine represented through the art of balance and interconnected words of life, flowing forth in a tongue of grace and poignancy. Your voice graces the eye, and brings forth tears that express of the soul’s thirst. I want to thank you for your dedication to the power of prayer and fasting, community and celebration, and your recognition of prayer as a song, and that song as a call to the presence of Allah, tied to the senses of the soul and the soul of ancient lands, in ancient forms that remain as fresh as water in the desert. I want to thank you for the your spirituality, searching for the divine oneness found in the mirror of love, so similar to St. John of the Cross and other poets of my own Catholic tradition, and for the inspiration lent to Khalil Gibran, a Christian who nevertheless shaped his prophetic exploration of the divine life and human fragility in your Quranic tradition. I want to thank you for the dignified empowerment displayed by modern Muslim women, from the exuberant journalism style of Noor Tagouri, to the fandom fashion flare of Sugarnoor, to the sportsmanship and fencing expertise of Ibtihaj Muhammad, to the poetic mysticism and interreligious outreach of Mona Haydar, to the advanced studies and activism of Dr. Ingrid Mattson, and many more. Breaking new boundaries and expanding horizons, you inspire all young women such as myself to reach for our brightest stars. I want to thank you for the acts of solidarity and charity you have shown, from the blind-folded Muslim man offering embraces of consolation in Paris to the Muslims and Christians worshipping

alongside one another after the killing of a French Catholic priest. Your acts bear testament to those acts of benevolence and mercy shown by your predecessors, such as when Saladin sent fruit to ease the fever of Richard the Lionheart and spared the Christian civilians of Jerusalem, washing the city with rosewater instead of blood, even in the midst of a blood-drenched conflict. I want to thank all those Muslim-Americans who serve my country and risk their lives to preserve our laws and liberties, and those who extend the hand of help to all those in need, feeling moved to do so out of love of Allah and the teaching of their faith. I wish them blessedness in their feasts and fasting, in their prayer and charity, and in the words of Pope Francis, let nothing come between us standing before the same God. I want to thank you for all that is true, good, and beautiful in the Islamic tradition, and for sharing your talents, your zeal, and your excellence in the West. You will always have a place of welcome here among us, and a chance to fulfill your true potential as individuals and a collective community. We stand with you, and out of many, we form one. I see this often at Nearby Mount St. Mary’s, in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where Christians and Muslims alike are frequently found in prayer together, paying homage to Mary, Mother of Jesus. We are honored by your presence and this common bond. Whether Muslim, Christian, or Jew, we are all one in our very natures, having been hand-crafted in the image of Allah. We are all children of Abraham, the prophet who served as a bridge between God and man, and between the nations of the earth. We all come forth from the desert wind and bring with us the endurance of spirit and power of words that marks us out as the People of the Book. Together we acclaim Allah as “the gracious, the merciful…the Lord of the Universe, the Master of the Day of Judgment”, and bear testimony to His “oneness, magnificence omnipotence, might, glory” and his role as “Creator and Sustainer of All Things, the Giver of Life, the Guider of Hearts”. Before Him do we submit ourselves, and through that act of submission, find peace in our souls. Let us never be divided by extremism or terror, racism or xenophobia, misunderstanding or malice. We are better together, making the world a better place through our contributions as a whole, united in our diversity, empowered by our determination held by all people of good will, no matter their race or creed, to bring peace and justice, equality and brotherhood to the earth, and stand against all who would sow the seeds of hatred and violence. May we always remember this overarching reality, and may Allah bring our hearts into closer union with Him and with each other, so that our song may emanate from the same voice, that can never be silenced.
