Now the school – accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools through grade 12 – has about 500 students. The school is the ﬂagship project of the larger Dar-us-Salaam community building project in College Park.

“God Conference” Comes to Washington By Muslim Link Staff For the second consecutive year, a major gathering for Islamic learning and knowledge will take place in the nation’s capital. DC Hidayah, a grassroots, youth-led project to bring well known speakers

together for a weekend of disseminating knowledge of the Qur’an and the Prophetic sunnah, launched last year with a weekend of lectures which attracted around 700 guests. Similar to last year, most speakers at this year ’s event – also to be held at the Washington Convention

Center on June 18-19 – are teachers and Imams from the Virginia, Maryland, and DC region. However, this year a few speakers are coming from outlying states. “[This year]DC Hidayah is featuring Eddie from the Deen Show. He will be interviewing some of the speakers on stage and

also presenting his highly acclaimed film of how he came to Islam. In addition we will have an entertainment session featuring anasheed artists,” said Farooq Yousuf, 27, one of the organizers of DC Hidyah. There will also

Community News Journalist: Post-Flood Pakistan An Ignored Catastrophe Written by Farha Marfani Almost a year has passed since the devastating floods ravaged central Pakistan. The devastation these ﬂoods caused was far greater than the megathree of natural disasters – the Indonesian tsunami, the Haitian earthquake, and the Pakistani earthquake, combined. More than 20 million Pakistanis have become homeless. Most of us have only seen or read about the devastation through the TV or newspapers. People like journalist Ethan Casey and Dr. Ismail Mehr have visited the ﬂood-torn villages of Pakistan. Ethan travels and writes about Pakistan in hopes to raise awareness. Ismail Mehr and his team of doctors and disaster relief volunteers provide medical aid. They shared their experiences and noted the challenges in providing relief aid to the country in a program at the Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB) on June 3, 2011. Organized by a few members of the ISB community, the event attracted only about twenty people, although organizers were expecting a somewhat bigger crowd.

Casey shared some pictures, and indepth insight, into the state of the areas devastated by the Pakistan floods. Casey clarified that he is not a relief worker and said that while relief work is very important and needed, it is also important to educate mainstream America about Pakistan and to foster a good relationship between Muslims and Pakistanis and the general American community. “I am in a position, coming from an all white town in Wisconsin, to talk to [other Americans] and tell them that the Pakistan that I know is not what they see on TV,” he added. Having traveled extensively in Asia since the 1980s and with a curiosity to learn and in search for adventure, Casey first went to Pakistan in 1995. After traveling to Indian-controlled Kashmir and reporting on its political upheaval, he was eager to visit Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and report on another perspective. His reports, however, were not well received by media outlets in the U.S., who were not interested in printing the stories from the Pakistani viewpoint. Yet, Casey continues to return to Pakistan, having last visited in March 2011. Through his books, articles and talks, he sheds light on the devastation

left behind from the floods and comments on the blatant media under-reporting of the floods. Villagers of Swat greeted him with generous hospitality and told him that most Western journalists fly in on a helicopter and spend only a few hours reporting from “on the ground.” Casey spent four days in Swat, traveling the villages and interviewing tribal leaders. He shared pictures of once lush fields and orchards now replaced by copious amounts of rocks, and homes which have been destroyed to piles of mud. He mentioned that the government issued Watn cards, similar to ATM cards, to those who lost homes due to the floods, entitling them to 100,000 rupees. These people have only received 20,000 rupees, and are still waiting to receive the remaining 80,000 rupees promised to them. Casey also noted that what’s more important than providing food aid to flood-torn Pakistan is providing paid labor to not only begin rebuilding homes and villages, but to recover villagers’ selfrespect and dignity. The manpower exists,

yet it has not been mobilized, he added. Dr. Ismail Mehr of the Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA) echoed similar insights, especially about the chaotic state of Pakistani villages after the ﬂoods. In addition to describing IMANA’s efforts in providing medical aid to thousands in ﬂood-affected areas, Dr. Mehr recalled an instance when he and his team were handing out food. The images of hungry children who were shaking from hunger and worry that they would not receive food are forever etched in his memory. In response to an article he wrote for The Huffington Post about America’s negligence toward the floods, Casey received scathing comments such as, “we’ll start donating after they stop bombing us.” In contrast to the tremendous media attention and outpouring of support from Americans to Haitians during the 2010 earthquake, Casey commented that Americans feel pity for Haitians, but feel threatened by Pakistanis.

From Pharmacy to Herbal Medicine: A Muslim Woman’s Journey to Promote Health and Well-Being By Wendy Diaz

on her own was tough for both her and her family. However, they were accommodating in her resolve to pursue her studies and have been her support system ever since, attending her herbal show, a project which is an essential part of the school’s medicinal herbs program, and also her graduation this summer.

Muslim Link Staff Writer Two and a half years ago, 28 year old pharmacist Amani El Sawah packed her bags and moved from Piscataway, New Jersey to Silver Spring, Maryland to pursue her dream of studying herbal medicine. After graduating from Rutgers University with a doctorate in pharmacy and working three years in Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth, NJ, Amani made the move that would change the course of her career and her life, enrolling in Tai Sophia Institute’s Herbal Medicine Master’s Program. The only daughter and middle child of Egyptian-born parents, Amani’s interest in pharmacy was instilled in her by her mother who advised her to choose a ﬁeld which promised ﬂexible hours and a good salary. Pharmacy, she insisted, was a great career for a woman to uphold Islamic values such as not dealing directly with male patients and hospital staff, as well as giving her ample time to raise a family. During Amani’s studies at Rutgers, New Brunswick, while going through the pharmacy program, she came across herbal medicine. “We learned about herbal medicine because, as pharmacists, [because] we would need to know about the possible drug-herb interactions if patients chose to take herbal supplements. I found it fascinating that herbs like garlic and

Amani decided to take an elective offered at Rutgers dealing with herbs and nutritional supplements. Through this class, her interest was further intensiﬁed, and she began to explore other natural alternatives. Although this all took place during her years at the university, it was not until after graduating and working professionally as a pharmacist that she

ﬁnally made the decision to look into herbal schools and heard about Tai Sophia Institute in Laurel, Maryland. This school, specializing in Healing Arts and Sciences offers graduate degrees in Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, and Transformative Leadership and Social Change. After recommendations from a pharmaceutical expert in California who knew the director of Tai Sophia personally, Amani attended their open house and decided to enroll in the Graduate Program for Herbal Medicine. The decision to move to Maryland

Herbal medicine has been and is still used widely in many parts of the world. In the Islamic world, especially, Muslims have relied on the Qur’an and prophetic guidance, using black seed and honey among other herbs to treat many ailments. Herbal medicine, not to be confused with Homeopathy, is sometimes called herbalism, herbology, botanical medicine, or phytomedicine, and refers to using parts of plants, including seeds, fruits, roots, leaves, bark, stems, and ﬂowers for medicinal purposes. Herbal medicine has been around long before recorded history; however, with the introduction of chemical analysis, scientists began to isolate and manipulate active ingredients in plants, and create compounds to form the drugs now used in conventional medicine. While practicing as a pharmacist, Amani dealt with the latter. Now she is an advocate for herbal medicine because she says it is a more natural approach to treating the body and maintaining overall health.

Two Al-Huda Students Winners Recognized for “If I Were Mayor” Essays By Asia Williams

Muslim Link Contributing Writer As part of the statewide Municipal Government Month celebration, Al Huda School’s fourth grade students wrote and submitted essays on the topic “If I Were Mayor.” Essays by Zakiyyah Ali and Zaid Hijazi were selected by Al-Huda School staff as the two outstanding essays to be recognized at the City of College Park’s ceremony. College Park Mayor Andrew M. Fellows, visited Al Huda School earlier in the school year and spoke with the children about his role as mayor. He gave the children some topics to include in the essay such as how to clean up the Chesapeake Bay,

The students read their essays in front of Mayor Fellows, City Council, viewers watching the City Council meeting from home and family and friends. When asked how she felt about reading her essay, Zakiyyah Ali said she felt “good, but very nervous and scared.” Each of the children received a certiﬁcate and had their picture taken with the Mayor. Fellows said he looks forward to

the essay contest each year.

This year’s theme is “Allah: In God We Trust”, and most of the presentations will be about Allah, and how to know and appreciate Allah. Organizers said nonMuslims are welcome. “We greatly hope that non-Mulims attend and feel welcome to do so given the location. We hope this is pleasant educational experience for non-muslims and that they can leave with a great appreciation for who Allah is to Muslims,” said Amina Miah, another one of the organizers.

“We’re here to celebrate all of your hard work, if it wasn’t for you, we would not be graduating today. Al-Huda [High School] may not have everything that [public schools] have – and I know because I used to go to public school -- but Al-Huda has something much more previous, they have brotherhood,” said Mohammad, who plans on pursuing dentistry.

The graduation ceremony was filled with advice from speaker after speaker to the graduates and the attendees to recognize the blessings of Allah on the school and community and – above all – to be humbly grateful for these blessings. Over 700 family members, former students, staff, and supporters filled the auditorium at the formal event; although no tickets were sold, an invitation and RSVP were required to attend the 3-hour ceremony. Months of preparation from the Al-Huda School high school teachers, administration, high school students, and school founder Imam Safi Khan went into planning the event. “This graduation was a very important milestone for our education mission, and we wanted it to be a day of appreciation for Allah’s blessings on our community. Of course it was also a special day for our graduates, so we made sure to involve them in planning the ceremony,” said AlHuda’s principal Haroon Baqai. The graduating class was made up of 6 boys and 8 girls. Three of the students who started with Al-Huda School in Kindergarten – Yunus Jerome, Mohammed Hijazi, and Aisha Aulakh -were recognized at the event along with their parents. The Al-Huda School graduation committee – composed of high school teachers,

Photo by Cardiff Andana administration, and students – themed the ceremony “Sowing Seeds of the Ummah: From Roots to Fruits”, and the image of a well rooted tree bearing fruit was repeated several times throughout the ceremony. The program opened with a recitation by graduate Mohammed Hijazi who started reading from the thirteenth verse of Surah Kahf where Allah says “We narrate unto you their story with truth: Truly! They were young men who believed in their Lord (Allah), and We increased them in guidance.” The verse was the inspiration for naming the school “Al-Huda”, which means “the guidance”. Hijazi and Eman Faris were the two graduates recognized for memorizing the entire Qur’an. Yusra Eberle was the salutatorian for the “class of 1432”, and her address focused on how she learned to “focus on the positives” as her environment and school changed during her high school

Former rapper Mutah Beale was ﬂown in from Los Angeles as a special guest for the graduation ceremony. Once known as “Napolean” of Tupac Shakur’s group “the Outlawz”, Beale entered Islam several years ago and now travels around the world speaking to Muslim youth. “Tomorrow is gone and we can’t get it back and the future is not promised for us, but we have today where we can correct our affairs … life might get a little more serious [now],” he advised the graduates. “Put that ﬁght and effort into the main graduation which will be on [the Day of Judgment].” Beale’s short advice was followed by a poem called “Thinking Back” by graduate Aisha Aulakh, an appreciation speech by three others from the senior girls class, and a short video presentation with pictures of scenes from Al-Huda School over the years which brought back happy

Youth Retreat in Rockville Called Success for Amaana Kevin Bryant

Muslim Link Contributing Writer The Muslim Youth Retreat that took place May 28-29 at the Lathrop E. Smith Environmental Education Center in Rockville, MD was the first of its kind planned and provided by Amaana, a non-profit organization with a mission to cultivate a Muslim community based on Islamic principles. The purpose of the retreat was provide social and confidence-building activities for local youth in a healthy Islamic environment and to engage them in dialogue on a variety of topics relative to their daily experiences, all within the context of reinforcing Islamic values. Amaana seeks to foster respect for diverse cultural values and create a healthy legacy for Muslim youth by providing social services including counseling, education, and welfare for the poor and needy in the Muslim community. About 70 people participated in the retreat including adult volunteers; the youth ranged in age from eight to eighteen and included males and females. Some nonMuslims interested in Islam also attended the weekend retreat. CLASS II

Fatimah Waseem would have graduated with the class of 2011, but two years ago she transferred to Springbrook High School where, just two days before AlHuda’s graduation, she delivered the salutatorian address to her class. “I felt pleasantly surprised by Al-Huda School’s [graduation]. Although we didn’t have 6,000+ guests seated in a hall worthy of the most celebrated people of today, we had something far more valuable that brought us together: Islam,” she wrote to the Muslim Link. After lunch, the youngsters went to the Rockville Ice Arena where they enjoyed twirling and gliding on ice, again, many for the ﬁrst time. “Ice Skating was my favorite part [of the retreat],” said Nadia, a 13 year-old Gaithersburg, MD resident. Surprisingly, many of the young men enjoyed the ice adventure as well: “It was fun! I want to do it again,” remarked Mateo Flores also of Gaithersburg.

What made this retreat unique was the fact that the Welfare Committee of Amaana sponsored a vigorous fundraising campaign including a Clean-a-thon that took place on May 7 when volunteers gathered on the DC/MD border in the Southeast, Washington, DC and Capitol Heights, MD area to clean parks and neighbors’ yards. The fundraising efforts also included funds and services from the business community and resulted in reducing the cost of the retreat from nearly $90.00 per person to $15.00 per person. 1995 as the ﬁrst student on record for the new school. “The [Al-Huda] graduates seemed very happy and excited to start a new phase in their lives. It was obvious that Al-Huda had a great impact on shaping their education and their bonds with other Muslim teenagers. It made me happy to be a part of the next phase of Al-Huda’s growth,” said Haleem, who is currently in her ﬁnal year at the University of Maryland. Noor Nahavandi delivered the valedictorian address. He emphasized he is in no way better than any of his fellow graduates, but that he was a “culmination of Al-Huda shaped by those” teachers and fellow students around him. “I can only pray to Allah that I have helped [my classmates] half as much as they have helped me,” he said, remarking on the brotherhood he experienced during his four years at Al-Huda High. Like other student speakers, he thanked the community and especially the parents

The affordable price made it possible for many to attend and resulted in a diverse group of youngsters. The following are accounts of the activities that took place over the weekend. On Saturday morning, after breakfast, early arrivals enjoyed fencing instruction provided by Rockville Fencing Academy and sparred with each other under the shade of tall trees and a tempered cool breeze. Outfitted in fencing gear, the youngsters excitedly jousted in pairs, for supporting the school and “allowing us to flourish”. Both the valedictorian and the salutatorian were chosen by the school administration after reviewing academic standing, character, and collecting surveys from the high school teachers and the graduating class. Students were required to completed Advanced Placement classes; all fourteen of the graduates were accepted to colleges and several received substantial scholarships. The final presentation before the diploma ceremony was a deeply personal speech by founder and Imam of Dar-us-Salaam Safi Khan. Titled “Ya Allah”, the presentation was a heartfelt expression of gratitude and reliance on Allah, and an appeal for Allah to continue supporting the work and mission of the Dar-us-Salaam community. “Ya Allah, giving up was never an option,

because we knew You were there … people who differed with Dar-us-Salaam … just made us trust You even more … Your grace descended and our gratitude increased …. your compassion was our solace, we made dua and dua and dua, and your miracles descended and the only thing we could do was express our gratitude with tears and sajdah of shukr,” said Imam Saﬁ, who closed with a dua for the graduates. “Ya Allah, help them choose careers which help establish Your deen and which revere Your Name.” The diploma ceremony closed the program. As master of ceremonies and Al-Huda High history teacher Jamal Abdul-Kareem called up each graduate, an audio clip played in the voice of the graduate, explaining what Al-Huda School means to them, and offering a vision for their future; the day ended with takbir, smiles, hugs, and an auditorium full of gratitude.

Al-Huda School Students Publish Own Books By Shirin Ishaq

Muslim Link Contributing Writer Since the dawn of Islam, the crux of Muslim scholarship has rested the ability to read and write. The students of AlHuda School in College Park, Maryland have been honoring this Islamic literary tradition by publishing their very own books. For the fourth year, KG-8th graders worked diligently for three months, writing first drafts and revision upon revision and ﬁnally readying their work for publication. The books were published by Student Treasures Publishing, a division of Nationwide Learning, a program designed to encourage learning through the writing, illustrating, and publishing of full-color, hardbound books.

This year, the Arabic faculty collaborated on the project as well. The Al-Huda School teachers felt that such an endeavor was important not only as an academic exercise but because the entire process would teach their students more about the culture of learning, scholarship, and literacy—the mastery of language—a decidedly Islamic culture. In doing so, the KG-2nd grades compiled the work of every student into a class book; 3rd-8th graders wrote and illustrated individual books. Needless to say, the hard work of both students and teachers paid off. The books were on display on May 28 at the annual Muslim Funfest carnival. THEN [they should take] a good look at our AP scores. IAMC Rejuvenates Indian American Families Across MD, VA By Saleem Ahmad

The Indian American Muslim Community in the Baltimore Area was energized by a cookout and picnic organized by the Maryland-Virginia Chapter of Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) at the Patapsco Valley State Park on 21st of May, 2011.

Different community leaders from Baltimore County Muslim Council and Islamic Society of Baltimore joined the picnic to show their support for IAMC.

More than 100 Indian American Families comprising of approximately 250 members from all over Maryland and Virginia attended the picnic. Ms. Adrienne Jones, Delegate, District 10 and Speaker Pro tem of Maryland joined the picnic. Another special guest was Council man Tom Quirk from district 1 of Baltimore County. “These types of events certainly rejuvenate communities and the idea of Community organizations” said Ms. Jones. In his short speech Mr. Quirk reiterated his support to the Indian Community. Both of the guests envisioned and emphasized on a long lasting relationship between Public ofﬁces and Muslim Community. The young attendees were attentive as Sidee issued warnings to them of the dangers of trusting strangers and communicating with them through the internet. The first day concluded with a bonfire that reached almost 20 feet high, nearly eclipsing the majestic tall pines and other tree species. “The fire was so high and hot that I could barely go near it,” said Meredith Isaiah, an ex-Military volunteer, who assembled the wood and alighted the bonfire. A brief rain shower subdued the fire to an approachable intensity shortly thereafter and Dr. Hussein Afeefy both entertained and educated the audience, including some adult volunteers, with stories of prophets lesser known meant to inspire and to reinforce the values of good behavior and unyielding faith in Allah. On Sunday, after salatul fajr, the overnight retreaters awoke to a hot breakfast courtesy of IHOP. Shortly thereafter, they made

their way to Camp Olympia to test their equestrian muster. Nearly all of the participants stated that the Introduction to Horses session was their first experience of being so close to such a formidable animal. The youth learned how to groom the horses, each entering individual cramped stalls in pairs to brush and comb the fine hairs of the nearly one-ton horses. Owner, Celeste McGee, remarked, “This was an excellent group . . . I had to help some of the girls during the grooming process which boosted their confidence.” After grooming the horses, the youngsters mounted the horses in the outdoor arena and rode them gleefully. McGee even made concessions for younger equestrian hopefuls. Two-yearold Tasneem mounted a pony, Big Boy, with the help of her mother for a photo op. Four-year-old Sulayman giggled the entire time he rode Big Boy for a complete round of the arena. After returning to the campsite, female adult volunteers led sisters-only roundtable discussions on matters related to personal hygiene and other subjects related to the young women’s daily experiences. Dr. Afeefy led similar discussion for the brothers.

“Unfortunately what I see today in many people is a drug or more than one for every symptom and disease. What happens is that a person becomes a walking pharmacy, taking medications for every ailment and also for the side effects of the medications. It breaks my heart to see this, especially in the elderly population. This is what inspired me to want to become a holistic health practitioner, specializing in herbs,” she said. Amani asserts that conventional medicine treats diseases symptomatically and on a one-size-fits-all basis. For example, all patients with high cholesterol may be prescribed the same medication although each individual is different and their bodies may react differently to the drug. However, she does not completely shun modern medicine, acknowledging that it is best suited for emergency situations and can also help a person stabilize until they are well enough to proceed with natural remedies. These remedies may be partnered with diet and lifestyle changes that are relevant to each individual patient; thus one patient may be prescribed a certain diet and herbal regimen while another may receive a completely different treatment plan. Herbal medicine is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, and therefore it is strongly advised that anyone seeking to purchase herbal remedies first consult with a professional and only purchase quality herbs. It is also important to consider that there is no “quick fix” for illness. Blessings? What Blessings? By Sheikh Muhammad Mitwaly Ash-Sha’rawy In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. I praise you my Lord, and ask for your aid, and I pray that peace be upon the best of your creations, our prophet Mohammad. We have concluded from the last episode that disbelieving and disobeying Allah is another negligence from that human who has forgotten his role in life. We have

also said that the All Truth, (Al-Haqq SWT) who has created man and made him the most superior creation in the universe wanted to award mankind and to provide them with all means of happiness. For the reality of life states that every person enjoying some kind of blessing is compelled to leave it behind. And even if man does not leave the blessing by passing away, it has been seen in many circumstances of life that the blessing abandons him and he stays stripped of that blessing.

So the indulgence of man with the blessings does not last in this ﬁnite life. The blessing is either going to walk away from you, or you are going to quit it. But the All Truth, (Al-Haqq) wanted to honor man in another way so He willed to give man the law that states for him what to do and what not to do. So if man decided to follow the law of Allah, then Allah would elevate him and give him more awards by sending him to an everlasting life where he never departs or gets deprived of the blessings. This is man’s prominent aspiration.

What scares people in their life is their fear of dying and leaving behind all the blessings, or the idea of living without those blessings altogether. So if Allah promised His believer another life where he does not depart the blessing and does not get deprived of it, then this would be an elevation of the awards bestowed upon the believer. Some Ways to Achieve Happiness By Sheikh Abdur-Rahmān b. Nāsir b. `Abdullāh As-Sa’di Kind Treatment towards People There are two tremendous beneﬁts in the Prophet’s statement, “Let not a male believer hate a female believer [i.e., wife]; if he dislikes something from her conduct, then he will surely be pleased by something [good from her conduct].” (Muslim) First, the narration directs a person to

good treatment of his wife, relatives, companions, friends, and all those with whom he has a relationship. It should be realized that every person has some form of shortcoming or something from his or her conduct that is disliked by others. Whenever a person feels dislike for these shortcomings, he should remember the manner in which he is required to treat these people and preserve good relations with them. Additionally, one should remember their good qualities and forgo the minor deﬁciencies of their personalities. This is how friendship, companionship, and good relations are

preserved and peace of the heart is earned and acquired. Second, this narration aids in the removal of worries and sadness, and directs the individual to the preservation of good ties, being dutiful in regards to the rights and responsibilities he has, and keeping healthy relationship between the people. In contrast, when a person does not heed the prophetic advice, which is found in this narration, and instead detects the errors and disregards good qualities, he will surely suffer from worries and his relationship with people would be

stained. In this case, a person would not be perfectly dutiful to the rights and duties that these relationships bring and require. It is amazing that some people do have a strong resolve, observe patience and calmness when hardships strike, but they worry over silly things, causing their calmness to vanish. This occurs to them because they dedicate their intention to

The messengers of Allah came to guide man’s drive on earth, and Allah continued to send His messengers whenever the creation forgot about the divine law. Those messages ended by the message of our Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him). He was the last of the messengers, and his message does not need to be complemented by a new message from Heavens. Why was Mohammad the seal of messengers? That is because all the previous messengers came at a time when life was relatively primitive in the universe. And the primitiveness of man’s activities in the universe brings him closer to his Creator. We have many examples for that, for instance when people in the old times used to go to a well looking for water and they do not ﬁnd any, they would raise their hands looking to the sky pleading to Allah to send rain. This is because there were no mediators between their drinking water and the Heavenly rain. But now there are a lot of mediators and there are tanks to store the water, motors to raise the water to the tanks and pumping machines to pump the water in the tubes. All those mediators are now between the water in

its natural state and the person who is blessed with it in his ﬁnal civilized state. For now when the faucet is out of water you do not think of the Heavens, but you will call the responsible company!! You will check the pipes and motors until you ﬁnd out that the pumps are not getting any water out of the wells because the wells have dried. Only then people would turn to Heavens and ask Allah to send them the rain. So the means that people use to elevate their standard of life might give them some conceit in their knowledge and in their achievements. They might get distant from the origin of the blessing that comes from Heavens. The more time passes and the more the brains invent, the more arrogant man gets with his mind and thoughts, imagining that he is not in need of anyone. Thus the message that comes down upon a civilized life (the message of Islam) should be a message that compulsorily draws attention to the truth and overcomes all aspects of intellectual conceit. It should provide man with something that gets him out of that overwhelming materialism to the genuine origin of everything and to the All Granter of all things. The law of Islam represented in the Qur’an is the law that covers all doubts and uncertainties in the universe. And whenever the human intellect advances, the Qur’an provides man with knowledge that

pushes away any doubts resulting from pride in his mind and boastfulness in his innovations. In the law of the Qur’an, Islam is represented in two matters: the ﬁrst explains the essence of life and the other is represented in the commands to do and to not do. No mind can invent or rework them because they constitute a divine law to all the people from the era of Prophet Mohammad (Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) till the Day of Resurrection. It is not reasonable to have after the times of Mohammad (Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) new orders to do or not to do. So all commands to do or not to do were sent through Mohammad (Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) and will last till the Day of Judgment. The only thing that could change is the gifts of entities on earth, the gifts that you could beneﬁt from if you notice them around you, and if you do not have the chance to notice them, they will not harm your belief. Imagine that you did not invent electricity or airplanes or air shuttles, what is the effect of that on your activities in life regarding the do and do not commands? If you managed to reach those inventions you are going to use them, and if not, you will get no harm. On the other hand, if you follow the divine commands you are awarded for it and if you do not follow the orders you get punished. That is why the divine law has to be consistent for all Muslims,

since the day it was outlined by Prophet Mohammad (Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) till the day we meet Allah. Every progress in life is a result of you using the mind that is created by Allah to work on the matter created by Allah with the help of the power and energy that is created for you by Allah. You do not have any credit for that. So if you reach any innovation with your mind, using the matter and the power that are all creations of Allah, did you do anything yourself? Or did you only direct the creations of Allah? And if you only directed Allah’s creations, then you should not be deceived by the creation of your mind and let it ﬁll you with pride and conceit. Conversely, you should be conscious of the Grantor of your mind to believe in Him. The energy that you have is transient and the proof for that in life is the existence of people who are mentally ill and people who are physically disabled and people who have no ability to discover or invent. This shortcoming of theirs brings them adverse effects, and ruins their peace and comfort. Therefore, the people who are firm and wise dedicate themselves to dealing with and resist both the major and minor hardships. They call upon Allāh for help during that time, so that He does not abandon them or leave them reliant to their own selves, even for an instant. In this manner the small afflictions become easy to deal with and therefore the major afflictions will also seem easy to deal with. Implementation of this method also preserves a person’s inner peace and offers contentment to his heart. Overlooking the People’s Harm

Allāh describes the quality of His chosen servants when they say to the creation, “We feed you seeking only Allāh’s approval. We wish

for no reward, or thanks from you.” (76:9) This is speciﬁcally the case with kind treatment and warding off hardships from family, children and close relatives. There is truly comfort and tranquility in performing acts of generosity, according to the intentions that are behind these actions.
