Letters to the Editor....

make your local views known and write to The Muskerry News, Church View, Blarney, Co. Cork or email muskerrynews@eircom.net Dear Editor, I am a resident of The Heights which are located directly behind the entrance of Castleowen. I notice that the residents have eventually decided to address the issue of the over grown trees at the entrance to the estate. I am very disappointed and to be honest not very surprised to find that they have spent their budget on trimming the front of the trees and have not cut an inch never mind the three meters required from the tops. The mismanagement and lack of maintenance of these trees or the past six years have become an issue that we have had to live with to date. Castleowen objected to the removal of these trees and the building of a wall when our development was built so I think the onus is on the residents to maintain and deal with this issue. Should this nor be dealt with which I expect it won't we will have to take this issue further in the community and perhaps cut them ourselves! Name and address with Editor.

Berrings Community Association and Tidy Towns

For the third consecutive year the hanging baskets, that have been placed by the Berrings Tidy Towns Committee, have been stolen from the area. Last year the replacement baskets were also stolen. It’s a disappointment for the committee members that work tirelessly throughout the year to have these items maliciously taken on more than one occasion. However, it won’t deter the work and commitment of the members striving to keep Berrings the vibrant village we know today. The 2016 Crossroad Dancing has come to an end for the season. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated and supported us in making this years dancing thoroughly enjoyable events. We look forward to seeing you all next summer and hopefully welcoming new dancers to the area.

The sun came out in Kells Bay House and Gardens, County Kerry, to bless the recent wedding of the beautiful Kati and Adam Whitbourne as they celebrated their marriage with family and friends.

Thank you so much to Adrian O'Connell and the volunteers from Blarney and Tower Tidy Towns who gave up their Saturday to clean up the river behind Willison Estate. Thanks also to Pat Vaughan A.P. Vaughan Skip Hire for generously donating two skips and taking them away, full of rubbish. The residents of Willison also had a major clean up of their estate, so thank you all too. To our committed volunteers, take a bow, it’s hard to imagine how the village would look without you. As for those who continue to dump their rubbish so the rest of us can give up our spare time cleaning it up, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Happy 40th birthday to John Foley, one of our fabulous volunteers for Blarney Community First Responders.

BLARNEY PERSON OF muskerrynews THE YEAR AWARDS 2016 The August 2016 People of The Month are Martina & Tricia Cronin FREE

The August Blarney Person of the month is not one, but two people, twins Martina and Tricia Cronin of The Square Table Restaurant. Martina and Tricia opened The Square Table in April 2014 with the goal of becoming one of the top restaurants in Cork, something their nominees have no doubt that they will achieve. The restaurant has become a destination restaurant with rarely an unreserved table on weekend nights, and put Blarney very firmly on the fine dining map. Working in restaurants from the age of 13, the sisters fulfil very different roles in this highly regarded local restaurant. Following college, Martina learnt her trade at high end restaurants including Chapter One, The Park Hotel Kenmare, and The Bayview in Ballycotton, amongst others. Tricia worked her way through college as a waitress, taking over front of house operations at G’s

Restaurant Cork, before moving on to top restaurant Jacques.

incorporating northcitynews

www.muskerrynews.biz

Their commitment to supporting small local artisan suppliers has been a real boost to local producers and they also promote them on their menu, providing a perfect shop window for our local food growers, the unsung heroes of many restaurants. The restaurant has been extensively reviewed since they opened, with each review better than the last, and it is recommended by both the prestigious Michelin Guide and Sally and John Mckenna’s Guide, unheard of for such a new restaurant. They also received a place on the Irish independent 100 Best Restaurants 2016. We’ll leave the last word with John and Sally McKenna, who said, "We'd give Martina and Tricia Cronin their own restaurant-and-cooking show show, starting tomorrow, and we'd call it 'Round Pegs in The Square’!” Congratulations to these hard working sisters, what a great addition to Blarney!

Martina and Tricia will now go forward, with Jennifer Dowler, Sean Foley, Charlie Glavin, Eamonn Pitts, Petra Collins and Celeste Foley and Donal O’Donovan to the overall Blarney Person of The Year Award 2016 which will be announced at a ceremony in January 2017. Do you know someone who deserves a Blarney & District Person of The Month award? The awards aim is to recognise achievement, leadership and altruism so that others may be inspired to follow. You can nominate anyone who’s contribution has singled them out as deserving of recognition, be it in community, sport, business, arts, family or indeed from any sector or activity in our community. Send your nomination with the name of your nominee and the reason you wish to nominate them (along with your name and contact details) to Blarney & District Person of The Month Awards, The Muskerry News, Church View, Blarney or email muskerrynews@eircom.net

Laughter, excitement and a few tears as a new year starts at Berrings National School

A huge welcome to the all the boys and girls who started in Berrings National School on the 31st of August. There was laughter, excitement and a few tears! We wish them all the best as they start on their school journey. The extension to our school is quickly taking shape. The new building will include two ASD classrooms, a gross motor room and a computer room. The children will also be able to enjoy a new soft play area which will be situated beside the new building.

We are very lucky to welcome two sets of identical twins. The boys and their teacher look forward to a great year in Junior Infants.

The whole school community are very proud of the children from 4th class last year. Their original song ‘Live On’ was awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in the national competition ‘A Song for 16’. The song was written to commemorate the centenary of 1916. The launch of their CD was a great success and all the money raised went to the children’s charity Barnardos. Berrings Sciath na Scol campaign got off to a great start. A challenge match against Canovee National school saw Berrings NS coming out the victors in both the boys and girls matches. Well done to all involved.

Blarney, Inniscarra and Carrigrohane to host Cork’s First Christmas Tree Festival

Cork’s First Christmas Tree Festival will take place this December across the three parish churches of St Peter’s, Carrigrohane, The Church of the Resurrection, Blarney and St Senan’s, Inniscarra. From Friday December 2nd until Sunday December 4th each of the three churches will host part of the trail of imaginatively decorated Christmas trees that, together, tell the Christmas story in a new and wonderful way. The trees will be decorated by school and community groups from across Carrigrohane/Ballincollig, Blarney and Inniscarra areas. Participating groups will be provided with a verse from the Christmas story on which to base the decoration of their tree, so there will be all kinds of styles and interpretations! A free souvenir programme will be produced that explains all the trees and will include advertisements for all the local business that have sponsored the Festival. Funds raised will go to support the churches ongoing work in our community. The Festival will be open to the public and there will be no entrance fee. There will be voluntary donation boxes for contributions, and the churches will also be working in partnership with St Vincent de Paul food hamper conference and accepting donations on non perishable food items. Keep up with the plans by following them on facebook or checking the website www.cupcork.ie/christmastreefestival

On a wonderful warm evening in early August a gathering of Blarney locals and friends were enthralled by song and story at The Gab Mixtape in the garden of The Old Blarney Post Office cafe. The Gab is a new community of storytellers and listeners, people who value stories. There have been three Gab Mixtape evenings so far where storytellers and singers gather in an informal, positive atmosphere. In October the Gab Mixtape is coming back to Blarney, upstairs in the Muskerry Arms on Friday the 7th of October at 8pm. Entry is free. There will be a raffle on the night in aid of the Hope Foundation, a registered charity working with street and slum children in Kolkata, India. Excitement in Blarney as Scoil Mhuire gan Smal, Blarney, unveil

There was a good crowd in attendance as Scoil Mhuire gan Smal, Blarney, unveiled plans recently for the most modern school in Ireland, with work due to start in Summer 2017. Plans for the state of the art school include accommodation for 1200 students, and excellent community facilities. The new school will include 34 general classrooms, plus 10 smaller and 7 specialist classrooms. Three arts and crafts rooms, 2 home economics rooms and 5 construction and technology rooms are also to be included, as is a comprehensive library. The classroom layout will be based on ‘new schools of the future room layouts’, and a dedicated unit is being built for students with Special Education needs. The importance of physical education has also been prioritised with 6 hard play courts, and an extensive PE hall with sprung timber floor, overlooked by a viewing gallery for spectators, a fully equipped fitness suite, and ballcourts. Traffic has been addressed with 110 car parking spaces, and an effective one way system to be implemented, alleviating traffic congestion in the area. The schools commitment to the community continues as, thanks to lobbying by Padraig Sheehan on behalf of local residents, the new school building includes a state of the art hall to host concerts, sporting occasions and events, giving locals access to a community centre which can seat 520 people, something which Blarney badly needs. This large general purpose space will include retractable seating, catering facilities and a stage for performances. The catchment area reaches out from Blarney to service the growing population areas of Killeens, Whitechurch, Grenagh, Rathpeacon, Inniscarra, Kerrypike and Donoughmore.

Beginners’ Modern Jive Class

‘Jive Talkin’ comes to Blarney!

Mon. Sept. 19th Blarney Woollen Mills 8.15 p.m. Tel. Anne 087 2487696 E: corkdanceclub@gmail.com www.corkdanceclub.com

Social dancing has certainly experienced a huge rise in popularity in recent years and young stars like Nathan Carter, Derek Ryan and Lisa McHugh have attracted a whole new generation of dancers to the dance floors all over Ireland and when their fans went to the dance halls to see them they soon realised they needed to learn to dance too! Cork Dance Club’s popular social ballroom dance classes resume on Tuesday September 13th at the Blarney Woollen Mills Hotel. A new beginners class will commence at 8.15 p.m. (booking essential). Over the weeks the course will cover the basic steps in all the popular social dance genres, old time waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, tango and lots more. Cork Dance Club is pleased to announce it’s also starting a new exciting modern jive class this autumn. Modern jive is the fastest growing dance

craze all over Ireland at the moment. It’s the easiest partner dance to learn and most people can pick up a few moves even after their first class. One of the great appeals of modern jive is that it has a distinct lack of strict footwork to follow, this of course makes it easier to learn. Each of the class nights provides a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere for all dancers and would be dancers of any age from 16 upwards The lessons are broken down with step by step instruction for each move ensuring that you will learn to dance in a fun and easy going environment. In the class you will learn beginner moves and how to link them together. Modern jive has elements of rock n roll and salsa but it is easier than either. It’s a fun and healthy way to keep fit and meet and mix with friends old and new . It’s danced to music with four beats to the bar from the latest chart hits to Irish country and everything in between. Throughout the class you will change partners every few minutes. The rotation of partners is a great way to get to meet new people in the class and actually helps improve your dancing. The new jive class takes place at the Blarney Woolllen Mills hotel commencing on Monday September 19th at 8.15pm 087 2487696 / corkdanceclub@gmail.com / www.corkdanceclub.com

Mouth Cancer Awareness Day 21st September 2016

Free screening at your local dentist!

Isn’t it lovely? The new sign erected by the residents of Castle Close, Blarney.

Oral cancer is among the 10 most common cancers worldwide. 98% of patients affected are over the age of 40, but it is increasingly seen in younger people. Men are more commonly affected than women, though the difference in incidence is less marked than it was in the past. The cause of oral cancer is complex and there are many factors involved. Risk factors include: Tobacco causes oral cancer, alcohol use, particularly beer and spirits, the combined use of both tobacco and alcohol is associated with a

greater risk of developing oral cancer than either exposure alone, sun exposure is associated with an increased risk of lip cancer, diet poor in fresh fruit and vegetables and poor oral health. The signs and symptoms of oral cancer often resemble a lump, a red or white patch or an ulcer. If any such lesion does not heal normally within 3 weeks, attendance at your dentist for examination is recommended. It is worth noting that pain is usually a late feature in oral cancer. Early detection and prompt treatment offer the best hope to the patient with oral cancer. Every time you visit your dentist for a routine examination, an oral cancer screen is performed. Both the medical card and PRSI schemes entitle patients to free annual dental examinations. In addition to my duties in Brussels & Dublin in my capacity as Minister for European Affairs and Data Protection, I’m always glad of an excuse to attend local events, and to bring events to the area - as my home and heart lie in Cork North Central.

Brexit opportunities for Cork Earlier this month I was delighted to have the opportunity to speak to Cork Chamber of Commerce on the issues for Ireland surrounding Brexit. While Ireland would have preferred if the UK had not voted to leave the European Union, it seems clear to me that there will be opportunities for us, particularly in Dublin and Cork, as a result of the UK decision. Given the fact that rents in the Cork region are half that in Dublin and given that our county has some very large available sites that already have planning permission I believe Cork is well placed to attract a good share of the investment into Ireland that may come as a result of the UK’s decision Speaking at Cork Chamber’s “Brexit” event on 2nd September to leave the EU.

Is Susan Irish Mum of the Year?

Hundreds of nominations countrywide have been cast, tears of laughter and sadness have been shed as entries poured in and the finalists have now been decided for Woman’s Way Mum of the year, including our very own Susan O'Sullivan who is now one of fifteen mums chosen to attend the finals at a special afternoon tea on September 17th. Susan O'Sullivan, originally from Blarney and now living in from Grenagh, was nominated by a group of her 29 ‘non-conventional’ friends who she has come to know through sharing parenting experiences in a Facebook group. Susan and her husband Gerard welcomed baby Aoife almost three years ago and discovered they were expecting baby number two in September 2014. Soon after, Gerard died of a heart attack. Since then, Susan has tackled everything head on, even when Ciara Jane was diagnosed with Downs Syndrome and needed surgery at Temple Street Children’s Hospital after her birth. One of the friends associated with the nomination described Susan’s ‘compassion’ and ‘capacity to think and care about others even when she is going through so much herself.’ Good luck Susan!

Blarney Men's Shed travelled back in time recently to take part in Coachford Autumn Festival on their high neillies, which they had restored themsleves.

More flights and more tourists for Cork 2016 has been a very busy tourist season in Ireland and also of course in Cork. I was delighted to see recently that Ryanair committed to increasing the number of routes from our City, which will have considerable benefit for tourist regions in the county and particularly of course in the Blarney area. I will continue to push very hard at EU level and domestically to see the planned flights between Cork and Boston come to fruition. We remain concerned at the US authorities delay in issuing this licence for what would bring huge benefits for travellers both in Ireland and the United States of America and provide a great boost to the region.

New Town and Village Renewal Scheme Cork towns and villages are set to benefit from the newly launched Town and Village Renewal Scheme for Rural Ireland, which aims to revitalise up to 200 towns and villages across the country. My colleague Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys, launched the €10 million scheme last month. In total €380,000 will be available for Cork County Council in 2016 in support of up to eight separate town and village projects. As part of the scheme, the Council will partner with local businesses and communities to implement ideas and projects that can make a real and lasting impact in revitalising our local rural towns and villages. The focus of the fund for 2016 will be on small towns and villages with populations of less than 5,000, and will help to increase the attractiveness of our towns and villages as local commercial and social centres.

Free pre-school childcare represents saving of €4,000 per child Up to 85,000 are registering for free childcare in preschools across the country following a welcome major expansion of the scheme. All children can now enter the scheme on reaching the age of three years old, effectively doubling the number of weeks of free childcare to an average of 61 weeks. The extended scheme means that the level of savings for families has also dramatically increased – from an average of €2,000 to €4,000 per child on annual childcare costs – which is huge relief for parents.

Brian O’Mahony remembered as ‘Goodbye, my son’ is launched

A large crowd attended the launch of ‘Goodbye, My Son’, in the Aula Max at UCC recently. Brian O’Mahony was diagnosed with leukaemia at eighteen and died just a few months later. Brian’s mother, Marian, shares her experience of her son’s journey through terminal illness, providing an invaluable insight into how to try to come to terms with even the most devastating of tragedies, and follows their journey through terminal cancer, bereavement and beyond. Written with great warmth, honesty and candour, Goodbye, My Son is a touching tribute to a very special young man and a valuable resource for any family facing the challenges of terminal illness. Speaking at the launch Marian said, “Most of you here knew Brian. It's hard to believe it's fifteen years since he passed away. Great too, to see many of his friends here. Most of you knew him well, my tall dark and handsome 3rd son. “What would you do if you were told your loved one had weeks to live? What would you do next? What would you make sure to do while

you still had your loved one close? “Our son Brian was diagnosed with leukaemia and weeks into his treatment we were given the shocking information that he was critically ill and likely to live only a week or two. “When I was young my Dad died and I've

always wished I had more memories of him. Writing has always come easily to me, so immediately after Brian died, I wrote down events the best I could remember them. I didn't want to forget details over time, so this is why there is so much specific detail in the book. “I realised that we were so lucky to have such support so I also wanted to encourage readers to have that courage to reach out and lend a hand if times are tough for family, friend or neighbour. Cut the grass, make a stew, bring in the washing, it needn't be a monumental contribution, just help to keep the show on the road. This is why I wrote the book, because other books don't talk about the everyday experiences of families while caring for a sick relative, other books also don't talk about the high level of practical support provided by the community.” In the preface of ‘Goodbye, My Son’ Marian says, “I didn’t produce this book for money, pity or praise. I’ve put my thoughts and feelings on paper to help myself, my family and others. First and foremost it is a tribute to the life of our Brian.” This beautiful tribute to Brian ‘Goodbye, My Son’ is available in Waterstones, Veritas and Vibes and Scribes and online at marianomahony.com Trainee Doctor Grace Collins, Blarney, pictured at the announcement that DeafHear will support UCC’s MSc. in Audiology programme. pic Darragh Kane

A lovely tribute to popular local man Niall Daly was written by foodwriter Elke O'Mahony and published in last weeks Cork Independent. May he rest in peace. "On Sunday evening, I received terrible news of the death of Niall Daly of The Chocolate Shop in the English Market. I remember heading to town each Saturday morning when my mum was still alive and just before I was about to return home again, I ‘d stop at the stall to buy a small box of chocolates for my mum. I always left it up to Niall which ones to choose; I only told him no dark chocolate and no alcohol-filled ones. When I would return home, my mum would give out to me that I spent money on her but I could see her a few hours later opening the box and enjoying the chocolates – mostly with my dad out of earshot so that she could have all of them to herself. All in the English Market but also his customers will miss Niall. His family might continue the stall but the quietness that was around Niall, his patience and his pure presence are irreplaceable. Niall wasn’t a chocolatier, he imported most of his chocolate – a fact he never hid. He gave upcoming artisan chocolatiers a chance, introducing them to visitors to his stall. His eye for quality made his business a success and he was considered an expert in the field of awfully good chocolate. I still see my mum’s face when she opened the box of chocolates and the enjoyment when she took the first bite. Niall and his wife started The Chocolate Shop in 2000 and have survived the recession and the business has indeed grown from the start. There are always people around the stall, especially in summer when queues are formed around the corner of the stall for their delicious ice cream. Everytime I went to the market and saw Niall standing behind the beautiful array of chocolate trays, I thought of my mum and how much she loved his chocolates. When I go to the market now, I will think of Niall and my first time at the stall. My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. “

Formed in 1985, the Blarney & District Historical Society is a non-denominational and non-political organization which endeavours to record for posterity matters of local historical interest and also to preserve and protect local heritage. Through a series of public, illustrated lectures each year and the publication of the ‘Old Blarney’ Journal, we try to share the information gathered in an affordable form. In the 30 years since its inauguration, the Society has organised over 400 lectures, field trips and other events. Illustrated, public lectures normally take place on the first Thursday of each month (excluding July and August) at 8pm in Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál, (Blarney Secondary School), and all are welcome to attend. There is a nominal entry charge for non-members. Some Field Trips may carry certain restrictions. Interest in the Society has gone from strength to strength over the years but we are always looking for new members to join and help to continue this very valuable and interesting work for future generations to enjoy. Muskerry News |35 Behind the Castle Walls with Adam, Head Gardener Blarney Castle

August has gone in the blink of an eye and we are suddenly looking towards autumn. It seems as if the trees are already starting to colour up and night time temperatures are dropping. Growth has been great this month, and we are still cutting grass on a weekly basis. A lot of our new plants are thriving and the Fern Garden and Tropical Border both look particularly well. I just hope we get a bit more sun before autumn really sets in. The herbaceous borders are starting to fade in places and we are dead heading and tidying as required. Now is a good time to take stock of what you might like to change for next year. Overall it has been a good show this year and we are very pleased, but some plants have taken over a little too much and require some thinning out. We plan to add some new varieties before next spring to increase the diversity and extend the flowering time. It’s the time of year for pruning hedges, mulching beds and general tidying up in the vegetable garden. We have been cutting back our old raspberry and loganberry canes and tying in the new ones for next year’s crop. We have dug up the last of the potatoes. Lifted shallots, garlic and onions and planted out brassicas and leeks. Now is the time to sow spinach, winter lettuce and rocket to take you through to the autumn. Our Irish orchard is cropping well again this year. I was worried that it would suffer with the strange mix of weather that we had over the spring. We will be using most of the apples to make our own juice but at the moment we are experimenting with using the windfalls to make apple jelly. All of the trees are heritage varieties and it is very interesting to compare the differences between them. We are in the process of renovating an old apple store in our walled garden. We plan to put this to good use in the coming years as a cider brewing shed. It’s not too early to start thinking about bulbs. Bulb planting can be started in the next few weeks. The fresher they are when you plant them, the better they perform. Make a few notes as to where you would like some extra colour in the garden, then select bulbs that suit. Too often bulbs end up as an impulse buy that get stuck in a corner and forgotten about, so don’t forget to label them. We add to our collection every year and this year’s order will include more miniature narcissus and ornamental onions that I hope to naturalise in some of the grass areas. We will have to start thinking about winter protection of less hardy plants over the next few weeks. Some of our tree fern varieties and specimens in our tropical border will have to be lifted and brought indoors for the winter months. Others will be protected with straw, fleece or heavy mulch. We will then pray that we have a mild winter. I look forward to seeing you in the gardens. Adam

Liam Ryan, Owen McCarthy and Seanie Barry (Mentor) were part of the John Meyler coached U16A team that beat Galway 2-08 to 1-08. Inniscarra just came up short in the semi-final of the Premier 1 U16 Hurling Championship at The Mardyke on Thursday evening. This was a closely contested affair with little between the sides and some high class hurling. Na Piarsaigh got the ideal start with a goal from their first attack but Inniscarra settled with a foul on Dylan Church resulting in an Eoin McCarthy pointed free. Frankie Horgan pointed after good work by Jamie O'Sullivan. A wonderful catch and turn by the excellent Liam Ryan resulted in Inniscarra third point but shortly afterwards Piarsaigh got a second goal. Dylan Church scored a lovely point after a layoff by Darragh Hughes. Midfielders Fergal O'Leary and Liam Ryan then each scored a point before Eoin McCarthy picked up a good clearance by Cillian Murphy to score a long range point. Half Time Inniscarra 0 -7, Piarsaigh 2 - 9. Owen McCarthy got another point after the break and Inniscarra were now playing much better. A good catch by Eoghan Daly found Owen McCarthy who was fouled and he duly converted the free. Mark McLoughlin and Owen McCarthy each had points and some excellent defending by corner backs Evan Kelly and the tenacious Jack O'Sullivan led to the ball reaching Mark Buckley who transferred to David Kiely and his shot found the net for a morale boosting goal. A brilliant point by

Sean Sheehan kept the momentum going and a puck out from Padraig Holland was fielded by Con O'Leary who cleared upfield to Owen McCarthy and after a long run on goal he placed the ball in the corner of the net for Inniscarra second goal. Now just three points behind Inniscarra looked like they might succeed but an Owen McCarthy pointed free was their last score. Final Score Inniscarra 2 - 13 Na Piarsaigh 2 - 17 Scorers; Owen McCarthy 1 - 6, Liam Ryan 0 - 2, Frankie Horgan 0 - 1, Dylan Church 0 - 1, Mark McLoughlin 0 - 1,Sean Sheehan 0 - 1, Fergal O'Leary 0 - 1. Narrow Defeat In Mid Cork Final Our Junior A Hurlers narrowly lost to Ballinora in the Muskerry Junior A Hurling Championship Final on the 4th of September last in Ovens. Blarney who were looking to capture the club's first Mid Cork Hurling title since 1993, had a good opening half. Mark Cremin pointed a free for Blarney on the 3rd minute in response to Ballinora's converted 65. The game started with high intensity and it was a battle to win primary possession in the middle of the field. Ten minutes in, Mark Cremin scored a great individual goal where he won back lost possession, beat his man and finished brilliantly to the back of the Ballinora net. The score board now read Blarney 1-1 Ballinora 0-2. The red and green of Ballinora responded with another free before Sean Crowley found Vincent O'Mahony in space from a side line ball, where he pointed from the middle of the field. On the 20th minute, Ballinora capitalised on a breaking ball in the full back line where the corner forward ran in at pace striking hard to give Richard O'Shea no chance in goal. The green flag was raised to the delight of the large Ballinora following. Blarney did not panic and had plenty attacking options with Mark Cremin in fine form in the first half. Cremin converted a free and added two more points from play to leave the half time score Blarney 1-7 Ballinora 1-5. Ballinora quickly levelled the game in the opening minutes of the second half. Again Blarney battled and Sean Crowley playing at mid-field scored a point from play in the wet conditions. Cremin soon followed with another free to give Blarney a two point lead again. However Ballinora kept applying pressure and Blarney found it more & more difficult to win puck outs as the game went on. Ballinora scored three points on the trot, but on the 45th minute Eugene McCarthy found himself in space in the full forward line to finish well for Blarney's second goal of the game. The score was now Blarney 2-9 Ballinora 1-12. However the concession of frees was costing Blarney. Ballinora scored two more points from the placed ball before McCarthy scored from play on the 51st minute, which was Blarney's last score of the game. Ballinora finished strong, with their superior fitness helping them to see out the game. Full time Blarney 2-10 Ballinora 1-15. It was a brave performance from Blarney and lads deserve a lot of credit. Some will look back on the game as a missed opportunity, but the lads will learn from it and no doubt be back stronger next time round. Richard O'Shea, Stephen O'Brien, Daniel Cronin, Wayne Shine, Vincent O'Mahony, Conor O'Reilly, Donal O'Neill, Sean Crowley, Anthony O'Shea, Eugene McCarthy, John Daniel Good, Owen O'Connor, Conor Forde, Mark Cremin, Michael John Shine. Stephen Sheedy for Donal O'Neill, Kevin Cremin for John Daniel Good, Sean Twomey for Stephen O'Brien.

Coley ensures Fe21’s progress Blarney U21 hurlers are through to the quarter final of the Premier U21 Hurling Championship after defeating Killeagh/Itas by 3 points on the 31st of August in Pairc Ui Rinn. Both sides exchanged pointed frees in the opening minutes before Blarney wing forward Conor Forde converted a great side line ball from the 45 metre line. Blarney settled well into the game with Mark Coleman and Michael John Shine often on the ball in midfield. Coleman and Stephen Sheedy added more points from play, but Killeagh/Itas were staying in touch by pointing frees.

Mark Coleman

Conor Forde

The number of goal opportunities created by the east Cork team was a concern, but Blarney keeper Conor Murphy made three good saves in the opening 10 minutes to keep the opposition goalless. On the 13th minute centre back Peter Philpott scored a huge point from play after a well worked puck out. Again the sides were trading points thanks to Coleman's accuracy from the dead ball. A few minutes later a high ball into the full forward line broke to David Cremin who pulled on the ground into the Killeagh/Itas net, scoring Blarney’s only goal of the game. The score board now read Blarney 1 - 8 Killeagh/Itas 0 - 6. David Dunlea Killeagh/Itas responded well, scoring three points on the trot before Coleman leading by example created space to score a well taken point from play. However three minutes before half time Killeagh/Itas exposed the Blarney defence and scored their first goal of the evening. A converted free and a point from play from Ray Murphy, who was moved out as a third midfielder, gave Blarney a two point lead at the break. Blarney 1 - 12 Killeagh/Itas 1 - 10. Michael John Shine opened the scoring from play 3 minutes into the second half with a well taken point from the right wing under the stand. Two minutes later his brother Wayne got in the score sheet hitting off his left on the 45 metre line. Again Killeagh/Itas responded, with a point from play. Murphy scored two more points from play soon after in what was a very open game. Killeagh/Itas got their second goal 6 minutes into the half to leave a single point again between the sides. Blarney responded well again with their forwards creating more scoring opportunities, which was the real difference between the sides. Blarney were the better team but could not put Killeagh/Itas out of reach. Coleman who scored 12 points (7 frees) in total with the highlight being a side line cut scored under the stand in the second half. The lads did very well to keep the work rate up which forced the opposition to make mistakes. However it was a nervous finish with only two points the difference in added time. Coleman scored his last free of the evening just before the final whistle to leave the final score Blarney 1 - 20 Killeagh/Itas 2 - 14. Our U21's are now in the quarter final in the first year of this competition. However the lads will have to improve their performance if they are to overcome Fr. O'Neill's in the next round. Conor Murphy, Conor Power, Sean McSweeney, Wayne Shine, Paul O'Connor, Peter Philpott, Sean Crowley, Michael John Shine, Mark Coleman, Conor Forde, Stephen Sheedy, David Dunlea, Mark Coleman, Ray Murphy, David Cremen, Kevin Cremen.

Blarney club members - All Ireland competitions Well done to our club members involved last month in the Rebel Og Cork squads in their various All Ireland competitions. The participation of the Blarney players on the panels is testament to the level of Underage coaching in our club over the last number of years. Minor hurlers reach county final Blarney defeated Aghada in Pairc Ui Rinn on the 24th of August to reach the final of the Premier 2 Minor Hurling Championship. There were a number of changes to the match programme but the main omission was David Sheahan who missed out due to a hamstring injury. With the game played under lights, it was Aghada who got off to a blistering start scoring the first 6 points in the opening 6 minutes. James Dineen settled Blarney popping over a tricky free from the left wing 2 minutes later. Blarney made a few positional changes to win more ball in the middle of the field and manage the Aghada centre forward Charlie Terry who was having a major impact on the game. The lads dug in and on the 11th minute found the back of the Aghada net when Barry Dennehy showed good strength to get around the corner back and coolly finish. It was a big score and gave Blarney much confidence. Blarney started to dominate possession now and Dineen was showing great leadership in attack pointing two more frees and scoring the point of the game on the 16th minute from play, when he striked on the turn to hit it over the black spot. Dineen, Dennehy and Cathal Hegarty added more points to leave the score Blarney 1-9 Aghada 0-6 after 23 minutes.

Eoin Hyland

Michael John Shine

But the game took a turn again a minute later when Aghada scored a goal from a 21 metre free. Despite another point from Hegarty, the east Cork side scored a flurry of points in quick succession to leave the teams all square at half time. Blarney 1-10 Aghada 1-10. In a very entertaining game for supporters, both sides came out in the second half trading points in the opening quarter with Michael John Shine and Eamon O'Mahony getting on the score sheet. It was end to end and Blarney were showing great team spirit fighting for every ball with no lost cause. It was 1-13 a piece on the 43rd minute. Dineen scored again from play a minute later and Alan McEvoy who was carrying an injury score two well taken points in quick succession from corner forward. The green and white of Aghada responded with a point before the hard working Declan Hanlon got his first point of the night. Both sides again traded scores before Eamon O'Mahony scored a great individual goal at the death running through the Aghada defence from 45 metres out to ensure Blarney reached their first final at minor grade since winning the Minor A Hurling title in 2004. Final score Blarney 2-19 Aghada 1-15. It was another great performance from all involved. Blarney were well disciplined, never gave up, chased every ball and worked together as a team. There was some great skill displayed all over the field and their hard work in training over the last number of months paid dividend last night in Pairc Ui Rinn. Conor Murphy, Gavin Mullane, Conor Power, Dan Forrest, Olan Hegarty, Alan McEvoy, Brian Walsh, William Crowley, Eoin Hyland, Michael John Shine, Declan Hanlon, Cathal Hegarty, Barry Dennehy, Eamon O'Mahony, James Dineen. Thanksgiving Novena to the Sacred Heart. Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one. (Mention favour) Take Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes, it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail (ED) Novena to the Sacred Heart. Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours.
