Hello, Just to say a BIG THANK YOU from Eleanor myself and family for a really smashing occasion at Blarney Castle Hotel last night, it was a night to remember, very relaxed and enjoyable. Well done to you and team of Blarney Chamber of Commerce and The Muskerry News on a really prestigeous event, long may it continue for many more years. Congratulations to all concerned, Donal is a very worthy recipient of Blarney person of the year. Michael Murray, Blarney Greetings, Clem hegarty here again, ex Poulavone , now living in Swords North County Dublin. You may remember that you and your connections were a great help to me in researching WW1 Ace Mich Maddock last year. I wonder could you help me regarding Sir Alan Cobham’s Flying Circus that came to Ballincollig in the 1930’s? In particular I am looking to purchase a photo from the shows that were put on ‘down below the barracks’. Last time I was doing a philately project on ‘Irish Aviation & Aviators 1785 – 1920’ and this time I am putting together an exhibition on Flying in Munster leading onto the opening of Cork Airport in 1961 and on up to the present day. All the best for now. Clem Hegarty, Swords, County Dublin 086 1902752

On Friday January 9th the Muskerry Macra Regional meeting was held at the Rochestown Park Hotel. Muskerry Macra have teamed up with the hotel to host the Macra na Feirme Annual National Conference in 2015. This event, which is fondly known to members as the Rally, takes place over the October Bank Holiday weekend each year. While the Rally doesn’t take place until the latter half of the year event planning is already well under way. Attendees will have plenty to entertain them over the weekend, with fancy dress, farm walks, the agricultural conference, an alternative tour and banquet to name a few activities. The Rally committee chairperson Margaret Galvin is looking forward to being involved in the organisation of the Rally in the Lee Valley and said, “This will be a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the strength of our members and the Lee Valley area”.

Jean moves to start a new chapter

It’s always a pity to lose an old friend, and this is how Blarney’s readers feel as they say goodbye to Jean, who has been the village librarian for seven years now. Talking to The Muskerry News, one of the libraries many avid readers told us, “I have just heard last week that we will be losing our great friend Jean from Blarney library as she is being transferred to Fermoy. Jean has been with us for seven years and in that time has been a key part of our community. The library plays such a central role in the community and is accessed by all age groups from the very young to the elderly. Jean in her pleasant and patient way has

made all of these welcome and helped them to find what they need in the library. She is an active and engaged librarian and always happy to help people make the most of the library service be it through the library activities Internet access requests for new books. From her own love of books and her interaction with each one of us on our reading experience she is able to sometimes to point us in new directions and suggest books that we might not come to ourselves. She has certainly broadened my horizons on many occasions. She always does that in a way that opens the door should we choose to go through but doesn't push. She is infinitely patient with all of us and our sometimes complicated transactions and we will miss her greatly as she has also become our friend.” And so say all of us. Good luck in Fermoy Jean, they are lucky to have you!

At a recent reception in Dublin Castle plaques were presented to 94 winners at the 25th CIE Tours International Awards of Excellence, with 13 overall category winners from around the country chosen according to customer feedback including our own wonderful Blarney Castle. Podiatry is a medical discipline which deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the foot and related lower limb disorders. A podiatrist is also qualified to treat fungal infections, verrucas, foot pain in adults and children, in fact foot care of any kind. Podiatrists not only treat standard chiropody such as callus, corns nails cuts, but are uniquely qualified to detect the early stages of diseases that exhibit warning signs in the lower extremities. Diseases such as, diabetes arthritis and cardiovascular disease among others. We care for and manage foot conditions which may pose as an ongoing threat to your overall health. Previously referred to as chiropody, podiatry is the term used internationally, and better reflects our modern degree level of clinical medical training and practice. It is not necessary for you to be referred by your GP or clinical Specialist as you can call direct and make an appointment. Diabetes can cause nerve damage, lack of sensation to the feet and poor circulation which can prevent healing of a sore or infection. Fungal infections can affect both the skin and nails, they are very contagious and can be difficult to get rid of once established. Verrucas are viral infections which are also very contagious and can be picked up from gyms, swimming pools, sharing towels. They need treatment as if neglected they can cause pain. Foot misalignment may cause back, shoulders, hip and knee problems and it is important to have your feet assessed to eliminate the possibility of abnormal foot function.

Blarney girl Anna Mitchell is set for the release of her debut album 'Down To The Bone' on February 12th in The Oliver Plunkett, Cork.

Having just returned home from a 6 week European tour and after a very busy 2014, Anna is gearing up for her biggest release to date. Anna has already received national airplay and plenty of plaudits for her debut single ‘Let’s Run Away’, and then released her ‘Fall Like That’ E.P to critical acclaim in September 2014. ‘Down to the Bone’ captures the songwriter confidently moving between soulful Americana, brooding late night ballads, and country tinged folk, paying homage to the traditions of the influences that went before while carving out a unique and contemporary space for her voice to be heard. Recorded at Monique studios and produced by Christian Best ( Mick Flannery / O Emperor) the sessions saw Anna sat behind an old Yamaha upright piano, with a 6 piece band sensitively recording assured performances that highlight the mood of Mitchell’s songs resulting in a cohesive collection that reveals an appreciation of the craft of storytelling, songwriting and expression. Garnering a reputation as a live performer able to capture an audience, Anna has already shared the stage with many celebrated singers and songwriters including Sarah Jarosz , Aoife O’ Donovan, fellow Blarney artist Mick Flannery, John Smith, Duke Special, Lisa Hannigan, Simone Felice and many more. In fact so impressed was the celebrated American poet and songwriter Simone Felice upon hearing Anna he subsequently invited her to join him and his band on the road for a European tour in winter 2014. Tickets for the album launch are availble from entertainment.ie or at The Oliver Plunkett bar

Cór Geal and the Whitechurch Christmas Choir The Irish Cancer Society has expressed their grateful thanks to the Whitechurch, Blarney, Grenagh, and Iniscarra and surrounding communities, after their annual Carol Service collected over €4,000, for cancer research and services. The Carol Service was celebrated twice, in St Patrick's Church, Whitechurch, with almost 850 people in attendance. Due to increased popularity over the years the service is now performed twice on the Sunday before Christmas. On both occasions the church was full to capacity, with additional seating and standing space. The carol services were addressed by local cancer survivor Sheila Hyde, who described the importance of the support of the services provided by the Irish Cancer Society on her journey from ill health sickness back to wellbeing. The Carol service is led by 'Cór Geal', members of St. Patrick’s church choir, and friends - known collectively as the Whitechurch Christmas Choir. This group of some 70 singers

performed traditional and modern carols in a beautiful and atmospheric religious service, presided over by parish Priest Fr Bill Bermingham and Fr Anthony Sheehan. The service included some biblical readings and poetry. The choir was accompanied by an orchestra of over 25 musicians, who come together each year for this occasion. Musical Director Betty Fitzgerald, B Mus, was loudly applauded, for her work in preparing the choir and orchestra. Following the huge success of 'Cór Geal' concert 'Viva La Musica' in April 2013, 'Cór Geal' is looking forward to presenting, over two nights, its next variety concert, titled, ‘Shine’, on the April 18th and 19th 2015, at the 400 seat auditorium, at Corrin Events Centre (Cork Marts), Rathcormac. This concert will feature music in a wide

variety of styles, including music by Queen, U2,Abba, Les Miserables, Take That, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Leonard Cohen, Ennio Morricone. It will also feature comedy items from the excellent 'Blue Hat' drama group, and promises to be light, fun and uplifting, and great ‘craic’! Tickets will be available in March from 'Cór Geal' members, the service station in Whitechurch, you can follow the choir also on Facebook for further updates and information.

During Christmas week some members of the care of the aged along with the parents of the after school care children at Coachford Childcare were entertained by a very uplifting Christmas carol singing session which took place one evening at Coachford Childcare Centre. Liah Casey and Abigail Kelleher are two of the representatives of the afterschool care group who presented Mr. John O’ Sullivan, Chairperson of the Coachford Care of the Aged Organisation, with a hamper they put together from a fundraising event they organised in association with Coachford Childcare Centre who matched any monies they made. Shortly after Christmas this hamper was then presented to the oldest person in our parish Mrs. Buckley, who resides in Rylane and who turned 97 years of age on New Year’s Day. Well done to the afterschool care children and teacher who worked on this project. It’s lovely to see the young helping the old!

Blarney & District Chamber of Commerce

incorporating northcitynews

The January 2015 Person of The Month is Mark McGloughlin FREE

Our first nominee of this year is Killeens man Mark McGloughlin who last month turned the village orange when he brought the ‘Cycle Against Suicide’ to Blarney.

Mark told The Muskerry News, “I first came across Cycle Against Suicide in April 2013 when I cycled for one day with them in May 2013, going from Cork to Mallow and on to Killarney. I originally went along because I fancied the challenge of a long cycle. However, at the break in Mallow, I realised that there was a lot more to this event than just a day cycling. I was completely blown away by the speakers who addressed our group, all speaking openly about the subjects of mental health and suicide. I decided at that very moment that I would do more than just one day next year. Fast forward a year to April 2014 and I found myself on my bicycle in RTE Donnybrook, getting ready to start a 1,400km journey around Ireland lasting

two weeks with CAS, working with them to break the cycle of suicide in Ireland. During that 2-week trip I met and spoke with dozens of amazing people and everyone had their own story of why they were there. Some of the stories were sad, some were even tragic but each

www.muskerrynews.biz

one was uplifting and I realised that the message ‘it’s OK not to feel OK, and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help’ needed to be heard in my own community. Like so many people, I had witnessed mental health issues and suicide in my own circles, so a few days into the cycle, I found Jim Breen in the peloton and I told him I wanted to bring an event to Blarney. It hardly took him a minute to hear my case, and he agreed on the spot. Blarney would have an event in 2015. Despite being assigned the most challenging date in the calendar, January 17, I found it was easy to rally up support from the local community and our amazing committee pulled out all the stops to bring what I really think was an amazing event home. Many people have told me since that they are glad that we did. So am I.”

See page 36 of this months edition for more on this unique event.

Mark’s names now goes forward to the overall award of Blarney Person of The Year Award 2015 which will be announced at a ceremony in January 2016.

Do you know someone who deserves a Blarney & District Person of The Month award? The awards aim is to recognise achievement, leadership and altruism so that others may be inspired to follow. You can nominate anyone who’s contribution has singled them out as deserving of recognition, be it in community, sport, business, arts, family or indeed from any sector or activity in our community.

Send your nomination with the name of your nominee and the reason you wish to nominate them (along with your name, address and contact details) to Blarney & District Person of The Month Awards, The Muskerry News, Church View, Blarney or email muskerrynews@eircom.net

Donal Hayes and Edward Healy honoured at 2014 Blarney Person of the Year awards Blarney Men’s Shed activist Donal Hayes was named Blarney Person of the Year 2014 on Saturday 25th January at the Blarney Person of the Year reception held at Blarney Castle Hotel. The popular local man received a rapturous response from the 250 guests at the function. Earlier, Blarney Vintage Club Chairman Edward Healy got an equally enthusiastic reception, when he was inaugurated in the Blarney Hall of Fame. Speaking on the award, Tom MacGrath, Chairman Blarney Tidy towns and former Blarney Person of the Year said, “ ‘Men don’t talk face to face; they talk shoulder to shoulder’, was first said by a Professor Barry Golding of the University of Ballarat, Victoria and Patron of the Australian Men’s Sheds Association in 2007. It is often this simple insight that resonates most with people when they first hear about Men’s Sheds and are wondering why Men’s Sheds work. We in Blarney, were very lucky that following a talk he heard on Irish radio early in 2012, Donal Hayes decided that a men's shed group would be a great idea. It is noted that ‘on the 2nd May 2012 there was a start up meeting..... and there was a lot of interest in the project’. I don't think that even in his wildest dreams

Donal expected that it would develop as it did. The objective of Men’s Sheds is to enhance or maintain the well-being of the participating men and is open to all men regardless of age, background or ability, a place where they can share skills and knowledge with others, learn new skills and develop their old skills. New members are always welcome and can be assured that there is something of interest for everyone as the men have ownership of their Shed and projects and decide their own program of events. Fast forward to 2014 and under Donal's leadership and guidance, Blarney Men's Shed has evolved into a great group of men, positively buzzing with ideas and plans for the future. A project like this takes a lot of organising, raising finance, and dealing with statutory bodies such as HSE and Cork Education and Training Board. When you read in the newspaper that several local politicians in the East of the county remarked ‘the Midleton Men’s Shed got nothing this year but Blarney Men’s Shed did. What’s the difference.’ Donal Hayes is the difference.” The Muskerry News / Blarney & District Chamber of Commerce awards aim is to recognise achievement, leadership and altruism

Simple Weight Loss Tips

with Adrian Morley & Aoife Horgan

Lets face it, everyone wants the easy option when it comes to losing weight. We all fell for those fad diets, quick fixes, workouts with no purpose and always thought about how long we would have to endure it for. Of course these are all too good to be true. Under eating, poor exercise choice and lack of direction are the culprits. You will end up worse than when you started.

If you truly are fed up and want to change, start with your food. Drop the breakfast bars (two words that should not be put in the same sentence). Make your own lunch, skip the white bread, mayo, deep fried hot chicken roll and that bit of lettuce on top, just to make it all the healthier. Don't finish the day with a processed frozen meal in front of the TV until bedtime.

Have porridge for breakfast, batch cook your lunch for the week, when thinking of dinner simply have any meat and large selection of veg on the side . If you are hungry through out the day, have some fruit or nuts. It might not taste as nice or might take some effort and preparation on your behalf, but it's a small price to pay in return for the results you will achieve.

Healthy living is easy but people over complicate it. Move more often, eat real food, have a solid workout plan. Done. No need to find the latest fitness plan, eliminate a certain food group from your life or even drink 3 shakes a day until you shrink away to nothing. Lets get smart about things. If you put in the work, you will reap the rewards. If you are looking to get rid of your belly, no tummy exercise or fancy sit up will work, full body exercise is key,.

Here at The Fitness Den we are for long term results and lifestyle change. We are a transformation centre, not a gym. We take pride in our clients achievement no matter how big or small. Once you commit to us, we will make it happen. Adrian Morley Personal Trainer

Time moves on and whilst we were sorry to see the planters on the Plaza in Blarney go, it will be exciting to see what will replace them. As usual, this was the work of our hard working Tidy Towns volunteers. There must be something in the air in Cloghroe, as yet another big hearted lady, this time Josephine Higgins, has cut off her hair at Sineads Hair Studio in Cloghroe in aid of the wonderful Rapunzel Foundation which provides hair for wigs for cancer sufferers.

Michael needs your help to take his first steps

Young Michael from Blarney was born in November 2012 with hydrochephalus which has left him with global developmental delays. He endured his first surgery at just five days old in Temple Street Children’s Hospital and on the night before his surgery his mum Orla

Christian made a promise to him, that if he showed her signs that he wanted to walk or talk that she would do anything and everything for him. And now the time has come to make good on that promise as the exciting news is that Michael has since been assessed in First Steps Limerick with a view to attending specialised physiotherapy so he can have the power to hold himself up and learn to walk. As well as minding Michael, Orla and Michael’s dad Aaron Barry are starting to fundraise, with the first fundraising event being the Dublin Women’s Mini Marathon in June, which hopefully will be followed by the Cork Mini Marathon in September. To find out more about how you can help, and to follow Michael’s progress, take a look at ‘Michael’s Little Steps’ on facebook

The children experienced an exciting visit from the Trabolgan Centre. They were promoting their Birds of Prey Educational Centre and brought a few surprise guests with them! The children held and were told about a mini spotted owl, a bearded dragon, and a king snake.

Gaga’s telephone hat and Princess Beatrice’s ‘toilet seat’ hat! We learned about the life of Philip Treacy and some other famous Irish designers. We listed all the different adjectives that could be used to describe his wacky hats. We then got busy planning our very own marvellous Philip Treacy inspired creations. In our Art lesson, we brought our masterpieces to life. Last but not least, all pupils got the opportunity to showcase their colourful designs in a pop up fashion show that took place in the school.

The children took a nature trail to the Clogheen Milicon Walk, collected reeds and wove them into Bridget Crosses. Some classes went to the local library where ladies from the active retirement group made crosses with them.

To mark our new spring season a pure bred silky hen visited Rang V for the day. Students made a pop up coup and settled their new student in for a day’s learning! She was named Princess Anna. Rang IV went on an SESE trial in the local square collecting bugs and creepy crawlies. They were fascinating to see all the living creatures and worked so well in groups.

Junior infants exploring the arctic in Aistear.

German is on the agenda this term! Transition year students are teaching our students the language through games and fun activities. They are most welcome as we get a glimpse of our past pupils and it is a pleasure to see them so confident and happy. Arabic writing was taught by our Muslim students to promote an interest in other religions and languages. The children wrote their names in Arabic and linked it into an art lesson. Congratulations to 4th class who entered the Blitz in Ballincollig. The girls managed to get all the way to the final and the boys won it all out. We celebrated with a well deserved ‘homework off’ night! Romance is in the air as we are building up to a fabulous Valentine Coffee Morning. This will take place on the 13th of February in the junior building. All members of the community are invited to indulge in creamy buns and a cuppa! Don’t miss out as it is on between 10.30am – 1.30pm. This is a fund raiser to buy more computers for the children. The senior building have made a splash by starting their swimming lessons this term. All is going smoothly and their skills are improving in the water each week. Hat trick in English and Art - Rang 3 Scoil Chroí Iosa! Milliner to the stars, Philip Treacy really inspired us recently with his weird and fantastic hats. In the first English lesson, we looked and responded to many images of Philip Treacy hats. We voted on our favourites and gave the class the reasons for our choices; they were Lady

David McMahon, a student in Gaelcholáiste Choilm, Baile an Chollaigh, was awarded a bronze medal in December at the Award Ceremony of the 11th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) in Argentina. David was selected to represent Ireland following his participation

in the Irish Junior Science Olympiad, which was held in Dublin City University in November. The Irish team of six students travelled to Mendoza with the delegation leaders Dr. Michael A. Cotter and Dr. Paraic James. Ireland was among the 38 countries participating in IJSO 2014. Skydome. 5th and 6th class students recently had the opportunity to interact with the planets, stars and galaxies when the ‘Skydome Mobile Planetarium’ visited the school. With the night sky and the solar system projected onto the roof of the 360 degree dome, the children’s understanding of astronomy was furthered deepened. It was both an educational and enjoyable experience!

Our school song. Mr. Whittey has been very busy in recent months writing our very own school song. The pupil’s personal experiences in Cloghroe N.S. were used as inspiration for the song, which is entitled ‘Still our garden grows’. Pupils formed a choir and performed the catchy, upbeat song at our school assembly. We look forward to singing the song together for many years to come! Operation Transformation. Cloghroe N.S. is delighted to participate in the National Operation Transformation programme. Pupils are participating in a healthy eating and exercise adventure. Young Scoil Mhuire gan Smal athletes excel at Cross Country

Good neighbour Angela Marshall, when checking out her two elderly neighbours, found them unconscious from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Angela, from Blarney Street raised the alarm and her prompt actions certainly saved two lives. Angela used to call in or telephone the two elderly sisters on a daily basis, including Saturdays, when she brings them groceries. She says that one positive that has come out of the experience is that neighbours are now buying carbon monoxide alarms. "People are proud - they won't ask for help. I think it’s up to neighbours to take the first step and call in and check on them. It doesn't take that much effort", added Ms. Marshall. Cork Person of the Month award organiser Manus O'Callaghan said, "Angela received the January Cork Person of the Month award because she saved two lives and reminded us all of how important it is to play our part in making our neighbourhoods safe, welcoming and supportive places for everyone who lives around us."

Chewing gum tastes great and helps freshen breath but did you know there are additional benefits to chewing sugarfree chewing gum? Dentists recommend chewing sugarfree gum after eating to help stimulate saliva production. Saliva is your body's natural defence against cavities. Saliva helps neutralise the acids produced by the plaque on your teeth and helps rinse food particles from the mouth which lowers your risk for tooth decay. Increased saliva flow also carries with it more calcium and phosphate to help strengthen tooth enamel. Clinical studies have shown that chewing sugarfree gum for 20 minutes following meals can help prevent tooth decay. However, beware, excessive chewing can increase wear and tear on the caritlage in the jaw and exacerbate pre-existing jaw problems. So, chewing sugarfree gum has many benefits but don't forget: -eat healthy meals -drink plenty of water -brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste -floss once a day, or use interdental brushes such as tepe brushes -schedule regular dental check ups. Medical Card holders are entitled to a free check-up once a year as well emergency treatment including 2 fillings, extractions and dentures. PRSI patients are entitled to one free check-up a year. News from Times Past

Blarney Harvest Home 1850 & Petty Sessions 1870

with Brian Gabriel, Blarney & District Historical Society Harvest Home at Blarney - October 1850 We witnessed, last Saturday, one of those delightful entertainments, which are annually given by St. John Jefferyes, Esq., the distinguished and enterprising proprietor of Blarney, to his labourers. The day propitious, the sun shone with autumnal splendour, invigorating young and old; the demesne, with all its varied beauties, lending enchantment to the view, while the lake mirrored the surrounding objects on its calm and tranquil surface, and the sweet Rock-close, the pride of song, displayed in its diversified scenery, the beauties of nature and art. The spirited and enlightened proprietor of Blarney, foremost in the field of improvement, has devoted his attention to the cultivation of the soil, expended large sums of money in draining, sub-soiling, and reclaiming waste lands, and is giving employment to hundreds of poor people, many of whom are the unfortunate outcasts of impoverished landlords. To express his gratitude to Providence, for the abundant harvest, and testify his approbation of the manner in which his people conducted themselves in his employment, he entertained them in the most plentiful manner. The tables were laid out for three hundred, and though arranged on the most economical plan, there was not sufficient room for the great number of labourers and their families who attended. All were amply satisfied, by the unremitting attention and urbanity of the noble entertainer. Among the ladies and gentlemen who took an interest in the proceedings, we noticed Sir George Colthurst, Bart., Ardrum; Horace Townsend, Esq., and Lady, Woodside; Captain Shaw and Lady, Ballincollig; Rev. Mr. Peyton, P.P.; Rev. Mr. Kenefick, R.C.C.; Nicholas Mahony, Esq., and Lady, Blarney; Mrs. Woodlock, A. O’Connor, Esq., Mallow; Dr. Lee, Blarney, and many other ladies and gentleman, who came from the surrounding neighbourhood to enjoy the amusements. Full justice having been done to the splendid joints of mutton, beef etc., under which the tables groaned, dancing commenced, and was kept up in an animated manner by the old and young until tea was announced. The Blarney band attended, and contributed much to the enjoyment of the day, by playing a variety of spirit-stirring airs. When all had been plentifully regaled with the pleasing beverage, Mr. Jefferyes rose and thanked them for their attendance. He said they had reason to be grateful to Divine Providence, for the splendid and abundant harvest vouchsafed to them: that this was the 18th anniversary, in which he had the pleasure of meeting them at harvest-home dinner, and as their conduct, during trying and difficult times and on all occasions, had been most satisfactory, he hoped they would continue diligent and faithful in their employment, and as their interest and his own were so blended together, they might feel convinced that the prosperity and well-being of one would conduce to the comfort and happiness of the other. He always felt a pleasure in giving employment, and hoped as the price of provisions were now so low, they would be more comfortable in future. The Rev. Mr. Peyton, P.P., rose, and in the name of the people returned his grateful acknowledgments to Mr. Jefferyes, for the hospitable manner in which he entertained them. He said it was truly delightful to see a gentleman, who farms so extensively, and employs such a number of people, manifest towards them such kind and considerate feelings. Not ashamed of his country, nor willing to impoverish it, by squandering in foreign lands, the hard-earned industry of his tenants and labourers, Mr. Jefferyes delights in being constantly with his people, and laying out his money in the improvement of his property, thereby affording to the poor and industrious, constant and beneficial employment, and to the absentee, a noble example worthy of imitation. The Rev. Gentleman proceeded to say - when I look around, and, after years of famine and pestilence, behold so many cheerful, ruddy and healthful faces, and we recognise amongst many hardy veterans, who have grown grey in his service, countenances which are familiar to me, when I was curate in this parish, I do assert with sincerity and without fear of contradiction, that Mr. Jefferyes has faithfully discharged his duties to his people, as a Christian and a gentleman. When famine stalked through the land, and death mowed down in countless thousands the labouring population, his cry at the relief committee was “do not let the people starve, give them enough to eat: while I have a stack of corn in my haggart, they shall not want.” And when it was difficult for the poor man to support his family out of his scanty earnings, on account of the high price of provisions, he generously raised the daily wages of his labourers, thereby enabling them to overcome the horrors of destitution, and preserve a grateful recollection of his generosity. He has likewise given an acre of ground whereon to build a commodious school-house, and promised a yearly subscription towards the payment of the teacher. These traits of kindly feeling and liberality are treasured up, not alone in the memory of a grateful people, but in the archives of Heaven. They proclaim a mind superior to petty prejudices or party feeling, and a heart formed on the practical principles of Christian charity. The Rev. Gentleman then proposed “Long life, happiness, and prosperity, to Mr. Jefferyes,” which was received with all the enthusiasm he so well deserved. The Rev. Mr. Peyton again rose, and claimed their indulgence, while he proposed the health of Mrs. Jefferyes, an amiable lady, who felt a deep and lively interest in

the welfare and happiness of her people, who participated in Mr. Jefferyes’ anxiety to promote their comforts, alleviate their wants, and make them content with their station in life; a lady endowed with fine feelings and exquisite taste, to which were united a suavity of manner, and a blandness of disposition, which have won the esteem and affectionate regard, of all who came within the sphere of her influence. This toast was received with every demonstration of respect and delight. The health of Lady Colthurst was then proposed, which was responded to by Sir G. Colthurst, after which, the entire company, delighted with the happy entertainment and all the fun and hilarity of the day, separated, pouring down blessings on their generous benefactor and employer. The above article was originally printed in the Cork Examiner Wednesday 16th October 1850. Blarney Petty Sessions November 28 1870 Before Messrs. N. Mahony and N. Dunscombe The Rev. Mr. Cooper, Protestant clergyman, prosecuted a batch of boys, named Reilly, Dooley, Atkinson, Bryan, Joyce, Lynch and a young man named Lee, for unseemly conduct at the churchyard, Blarney, during the performance of the burial service. He said a funeral took place on the previous Tuesday, at which he officiated; and as soon as the funeral party passed from the gate towards the church, a number of boys crowded about the gate, making a considerable amount of noise and loud laughter, which was very unseemly. The first portion of the service took place in the church, and during that time those who entered the church behaved themselves correctly, but a number who remained outside continued talking very loudly. When they came out into the churchyard to complete the service, the boys ran about in all directions, shouting very loudly and during the conclusion of the service there was also a great deal of noise. Mr. Dunscombe – Did they impede you in the discharge of your duty? Rev. Mr. Cooper – Oh, I believe there was nothing at all disrespectful intended to myself personally but the noise disturbed me very much and I thought it a very unseemly thing in the presence of death. Mr. Mahony – It was extremely wrong. Mr. Dunscombe pointed out to the defendants that they had made themselves liable to a fine not exceeding £5 or imprisonment (without the option of a fine) not exceeding two months. The defendant Lee said he was the length of a field distant while the service was going on. The Rev. Mr. Cooper said he could not identify any of the defendants. Wm. Hudson, sexton, deposed that Lee was close to the church wall when he called out – “Ashes to ashes, dust to dust; if God don’t take you the devil must.” Seeing a constable approaching, he then ran up The Hill, and continued shouting there so that his echo was heard all over the graveyard. Those who remained in the graveyard, encouraged by his shouts, made still greater noise below. Lee was the ring-leader. This was the second time he had so mis-conducted himself. The other defendants, Dooley especially, were shouting and huzzaing through the graveyard. Dooley denied having shouted. Lee said he only shouted when he heard others shouting. He did not know the difference of it. Other witnesses having corroborated Hudson’s evidence, Constable Slattery deposed he was standing at the police station door when he heard the noise, and proceeded at once to the churchyard. With the exception of Lee, who went up The Hill, the defendants ran from the gate to where the clergyman was, and back again, shouting. He stopped them and took their names. Mr. Mahony strongly condemned the defendants conduct, especially that of Lee, from whom as a grown man better things might have been expected. Lee expressed his regret and promised not to repeat the offence. The Bench fined Lee 10shillings and costs, with the alternative of fourteen days imprisonment and fined the boys 1 shilling each, adding that in any future case of the kind they would send the defendants to gaol with-out the option of a fine. Last summer Urla did work experience at Penny Dinners and found it very rewarding. Urla is also part of a terrific team of fundraisers applying their acquired FETAC Teamworking skills. Joanna spoke to all at Ballincollig about the importance of donations and fundraising for Penny Dinners and stated that Cork Penny Dinners was founded during famine times as a soup kitchen. It is currently serving well over 1000 meals per week, compared to 150 a week two years ago. Its aim is a simple one, to give everyone who calls to the centre a hot nourishing midday meal. Joanna concluded, “There’s an open door and a warm welcome and we never judge – we serve.”

Behind the Castle Walls with Adam, Head Gardener, Blarney Castle

January has flown by here in the gardens. We have had a little snow and a touch of frost but that hasn’t put off the bulbs and it looks as if spring is already on the way. We have daffodils, snowdrops, cyclamen, hellebores and witch hazel already flowering around the grounds. Our daffodil avenue is a real show stopper and it’s well worth a visit just to see that. The spring bulbs are a welcome splash of colour around the gardens, and we are adding to the collection every year. It’s the time of year for renovation and replanting in the gardens. We are pruning some of our overgrown shrub beds and moving some of the overcrowded plants. The start of the year is always busy for us as we try to get things in place for the new tourist season. We have just received an order of semi-mature trees for various areas around the estate. We are also in the process of resurfacing all of our woodland paths with newly chipped bark and mulching the shrub beds with old bark chips and compost. Nothing gets wasted here! One project that’s currently in development is our Stumpery. It is coming together nicely and we have started to plant up some of the pockets with ferns. A new path is also under construction which will link it to the Herbaceous Border. Another ongoing project is the clearance of laurel and rhododendron ponticum in our woodland. These are both very invasive and completely smother any of our native woodland plants. By clearing them we give our woodlands a chance to recover and hope to see encouraging results over the next few years. There are a lot of jobs to do over the next few weeks in preparation for spring. We have already put in our indoor early potatoes and are about to start sowing seeds including tomatoes, peppers, indoor salad crops, leeks, sweet pea and assorted bedding plants for this year’s displays. Put in shallots and garlic now if you didn’t do it in the autumn. We have just pruned our grape vines and also applied a winter wash made from sulphur, lamp oil and soap. This helps with pests and diseases. Winter pruning of fruit trees should be finished as soon as possible. Do not prune stone fruit such as plums or peaches in the winter. Leave this for spring and summer. Roses should also be pruned back in the next few weeks. It’s never too early to mow the lawn if weather permits, but watch out for emerging spring bulbs. Herbaceous plants can be moved or divided as the soil dries out and bare root plants can still be planted for the next few weeks. If you have a tree or shrub that’s in the wrong place then now is the time to move it. Dig around it carefully and take as much root as you can. Our tree tagging project is going well and we now have over 500 trees around the estate tagged with the new electronic NFC chips. This will enable us to use a smart phone to access an online database of the trees. It will also be available to visitors in time, and will provide information on each tree we tag. It’s a big project. Only around another 1500 trees to go before we start on the shrubs! Our facebook group, ‘Friends of Blarney Castle Gardens’ now has over 750 members. Please join if you have an interest in gardening or want to keep up with the latest news from the castle. I update it most days with photos from around the grounds. I look forward to seeing you online or in the gardens. Adam

Munster Colleges Senior League Final Coachford College 3-8 Scoil Mhuire, Carrig on Suir 2-9

The Muskerry School overcame their narrow Senior A championship Final defeat to St. Flannan’s last weekend by virtue of a hard earned victory in the Senior League final over Scoil Mhuire Carrig On Suir at Mallow. Lisa McCarthy and Nicola Phelan started well for the Tipperary school and earned an early free which Chloe Blackmore duly converted. Lisa McCarthy added another from play before lively corner forward Megan Buckley responded from an acute angle for Coachford. Chloe Molden, one of 5 Piltown players involved with the club championship in the All Ireland series, scored a good point after impressive defender Kelly Ann Doyle cleared her lines. Aoife Norris made two great saves to deny Buckley and Cliona Healy with the Coachford keeper Katie Ward also in fine form. Emma Flanagan pointed after an incisive pass from Katie McCarthy but the margin increased to four points when Aoife Doyle put Lisa McCarthy through to give the Coachford keeper no chance. Avril Healy, Katie O’ Sullivan and Katie Verling began a period of tenacious defending to prevent any more scores and, when Jill Kiely set up Healy, the wing forward forced Norris into a super save but Aoife Twomey followed up and finished the sliotar to the net. Elusive forward Lisa McCarthy found herself in space with five minutes remaining in the half and drilled the ball into the corner. Cliona Healy responded for Coachford to leave the Tipperary school, whose players are mainly all from Kilkenny clubs, a goal ahead. A feature of the game was the tussle of Greenhill’s centre forward Chloe Blackmore, who was excellent from frees, and Orlaith O’ Driscoll. Blackmore converted a 45 but was denied any score from play by the stylish O’ Joe Carey, Owner of The White Horse, and Chris Keating, Festival and Gig Guide, pictured at the launch of the Ballincollig Winter Music Festival which was held recently at The White Horse. pic Gerard McCarthy

Driscoll, with Niamh O’ Leary beginning to win the battle Kelly Ann Doyle in the second half. Chloe Holden pounced on a loose ball to fire over a point following a good block by Katie Sullivan. Emma Flanagan registered her second point from the wing and Rachel McElroy’s ground stroke beat Norris in goal to leave a point between the sides again. Aideen Buckley and the impressive Edel Tarrant at full back kept out Emer Long, McCarthy and Chloe Holden with Ward only called upon once in the second period to fashion another fine save. Points from Niamh O’ Leary, Cliona Healy and Ciara McCarthy put Coachford ahead by two points. Pointed long range frees from Blackmore restored parity but Cliona Healy converted after a great run to put a goal between the sides with five minutes remaining. Carrig on Suir pushed forward with Aoife Doyle and another Blackmore free leaving the minimum between the sides. Leah Kelleher intercepted a pass from Chloe Holden and the subsequent clearance

from Orlaith O’ Driscoll found Katie McCarthy. A clever cross ball released Megan Buckley who was unceremoniously halted, with Niamh O’ Leary converting the free. Edel Tarrant, Niamh O’ Leary, Katie Ward, Ciara and Katie McCarthy impressed for Coachford whilst Lisa McCarthy, Chloe Holden, KellyAnn Doyle and Aoife Norris caught the eye for Scoil Mhuire. Coachford are attempting to retain their Cork Colleges Senior A title against Colaiste Choilm on Sunday 15th Feb at 12.30 in Cloughduv. Coachford College; Katie Ward, Avril, Edel Tarrant [C], Aideen Buckley, Katie O’ Sullivan, Orlaith O’ Driscoll, Katie Verling, Ciara McCarthy [0-1], Katie McCarthy, Jill Kiely, Niamh O’ Leary [0-2 frees], Cliona Healy [1-2], Emma Flanagan [02], Aoife Twomey [1-0], Megan Buckley [0-1]. Vicarstown National School

Let it snow...... Young and old enjoyed playing in the snow in Vicarstown National School. Check out our snow people, Vicky and Mattie!

Our young hurlers enjoyed a five match challenge at the Sciath Na Scol Rang 4 Hurling in Cloughduv. They finished with two wins and a draw which did not bring to the final but got rid of the cobwebs and injected new life into the players for the season ahead.

Fruity Skewers. As part of our Health Promoting Schools initiative, the pupils from 3rd & 4th class enjoyed making and eating fruity skewers last week.

Bertie Bear. The pupils in 1st & 2nd class were very worried when they discovered that Bertie Bear was missing. 3rd & 4th class had hidden Bertie Bear and the only way he could be found was to follow the clues which were place inside and outside the school! Eventually they cracked the code and found him alive and well despite being wet and cold. Bertie has made a full recovery and is now enjoying warm homes and good food every evening. First and second class will make sure that Bertie will not go missing again (although they definitely enjoying hunting for him!).

Vicarstown National School is holding it's Open Day for New Enrolments on Wednesday February 11th from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Parents and pupils are invited to visit or contact the school for an appointment at a time of their convenience.

Blarney turns orange for mental health cycling event

On 17th January on a cold and icy morning, 120 cyclists bedecked in orange cycling jerseys and face paint made their way through Tower, Cloghroe, Coachford, Dripsey, Leemount and back to Scoil Mhuire gan Smal in Blarney to help spread the message that it’s ok not to feel ok; and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help. The average temperature of 1° meant that the feet were cold but there was warmth in the conversations that were taking place between the cyclists. The Cycle Against Suicide Blarney SpinOff was also co-ordinated alongside a spinathon that kept

up to 60 people actively energized for 3 hours. After the cycle, refreshments were served whilst Jim Breen addressed the large crowd. He acknowledged the true community spirit of Blarney that shone through with young and old helping out to make the day a great success. He thanked the Gardaí from Cork City Community Policing Unit and Blarney Garda Station who provided assistance to those participating in the Cycle and also for the key role they play in dealing with and preventing suicide. There was also great representation from local Mental Health Organisations such as Pieta House, Cork

Mental Health and See Change. The main 2015 Cycle Against Suicide starts in Belfast on Monday, 27th April and covers the entire island of Ireland for two weeks before finishing in Dublin on Sunday, May 10th. This year, the cycle will stop in six Cork schools - Colaiste Pobail Bheanntraí, Schull Community College, Mercy Heights Secondary School in Skibereen, Clonakilty Community College, Christ King Girls' Secondary School Douglas and St. Fanahan's College in Mitchelstown. Mary Noonan daughter of Seamus donated the perpetual cup for this event a few years ago and each year there is a lot of competition amongst the teams to win and this year was no different and have it displayed on their mantelpiece for the following twelve months. It was decided before the event as in previous years the two charities that would be receiving the proceeds from the day. This year the proceeds were donated to Marymount Hospice in Curraheen and the Jamie Wall Fund (a past Cork Intermediate Player in 2014). On Thursday 15th the presentation was made in the Wayside Bar to Ann Ellard of Marymount Hospice and she gave a brief outline of where the funds will be going. Some extra beds were opened in the past year and part of the funds will go to help in this and other items within the hospice, Anne also said that it doesn't matter how small the donation she has written receipts for as little as €2 from people and it all helps. Michael Wall, father of Jamie Wall, was also present to accept the proceeds from the committee. He briefly outlined the status of Jamie Jamie played a hurling game and a few days later he was in hospital having an operation to remove an abscess from his spine. As a result of this, it has left him paralysed from the chest down. Jamie is now attending the rehab unit in Dun Laoghaire where he continues to get treatment on a daily basis. Michael also said the GAA community in general have been a great support to Jamie and his family in the past few months. We all wish Jamie well in his recovery and hope the proceeds we donated will help in some way. Also present on the night were the organising committee, club officers & members of the Inniscarra GAA & Inniscarra Camogie club. Some light refreshments were organised by the Keating family for all present on the night and all went down a treat. The clubs are already looking forward to the event in 2015.

Ger O'Donovan, Senior Selectors Chairperson, Emmet Barry, Manager The Whitehorse Inn; Seamus O'Callaghan, Ballincollig GAA Chairman and Richard Hickey, Sec. Ballincollig GAA.
