Ballyhass Lakes is the only place to be this summer

Ballyhass lakes has been going from strength to strength over the last few years. With over 25,000 visitors a year coming through the doors it is starting to become a household name for school tours, group outings and corporate team building. Three years ago, they added Irelands largest cable wakeboarding facility. Wakeboarding, for those of you not in the know is Europe's fastest growing watersport and has seen adventure seekers young and old flocking to Ballyhass to try out the sport. With a regular core group of athletes taking part several times a week and a host of beginners every day it has become a centre of outdoor sport in the heart of Munster. After having some of the world's top wakeboarders already visiting and hosting the Irish National championships last year and again this year they are firmly establishing themselves as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts and action sports fans. Their biggest news and biggest development since the wakepark is coming in May of this year. They are opening Munsters largest and

most unique Aquapark. A giant 40m sq inflatable water park with 4m slides, trampolines, climbing walls, balance logs and blast pillows all based in the crystal clear quarry waters. Perfect for all ages from 6 up to 60 they are touting this as the next big outdoor craze to hit the country. www.ballyhassaquapark.ie If you haven't already heard of Ballyhass Lakes be prepared as it is about to hit the big time. They have an initiative called the Ballyhass Outdoor Project in which they are promoting all

things outdoors and the associate health benefits. Memory gardens, musicians and sporting excellence at Cloghroe National School The pupils of Cloghroe school were entertained by musician, composer and singer John Spillane who sang Irish songs with the children from his album ‘Irish songs we learned in school’, during his recent visit. Old favourites such as Trasna na dTonnta, Beidh Aonach Amárach and Mo Ghile Mear were among the repertoire. Fourth class accompanied the Rathlin Bog on the tin whistle. A great morning of singing was enjoyed by all. Cloghroe school remembered in a special way, its pupils and staff who have passed away, by unveiling a plaque and establishing a garden in their honour and in their memory. Fr Coakley, Chairperson of the Board of Management, blessed the garden and Emma Dineen principal unveiled the plaque . Under 19 senior school boy’s All-Ireland basketball champions. The school was delighted to welcome back four past pupils, Dylan Corkery, Conor O'Sullivan, Darragh O'Sullivan and Michael Lynch, and three of their team mates Alan O'Leary, Jack Lynch and Eoin O'Reily who recently won the All-Ireland Senior School Boys Basketball League. Francis O'Sullivan, Coach, inspired the children as he spoke about the need to stick with your sport and enjoy it! Cloghroe boys reign as Munster Table Tennis Champions! History was made on March 8th when Ben O’Connell and his team mates Eoin O'Dwyer, Darragh O'Brien, Niall Buckley, Conor O'Sullivan, Darragh Lyons and Ruairí Linehan won a nail-biting final to become Munster Table Tennis School Boys Champions. The team, made up of six fourth class boys and one boy from second class, beat teams of sixth class boys from around the province. A sincere thanks to Ben Haughton, their coach and to Tony Leahy, secretary of the Munster Table Tennis Association for presenting the boys with medals and a plaque at assembly. We are extremely proud of you all, your dedication and perseverance is commendable! Children from the school entered a debating competition sponsored by Concern and run by the Cork Education Support Centre. The motion we were assigned was 'Children should be allowed a TV in their bedroom'. Cloghroe were proposing the motion. The children researched the topic so well and debated the motion in their classes first with the help of their teachers. They then refined their arguments and practised their delivery. We then visited St. Catherine's National School to compete against them, it

was a very close and well contested debate and the two teams were neck and neck! The adjudicators reinforced this in their commentary afterwards and the motion was defeated. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and they are looking forward to the next one. Junior and Senior infants planted potatoes with Mr. Keady. It was a beautiful spring day and Mr. Keady told them all about the potato and what it needs to grow. Reggie, who is a dad of a senior infant girl and who is also a gardener came into school to plant seeds with the children. He brought in a big wheelbarrow! The children planted Nasturtium, Pansy and Marigold seeds. They can eat them when they grow because they are edible flowers. They also got to see worms and tadpoles. Junior Infants explored the theme of Construction in Aistear during March. They are working as architects, engineers, builders and lots more. Electrics, plumbing, kitchen, bathrooms, floors and painting all need to be completed. Children were under serious pressure as the houses then had to be sold! The boys and girls also constructed beautiful ‘rooms in a box’. First Class had a very special visit from Harley, the Garda dog. Two members of the dog unit came with Harley, a German Shepherd, to tell the children all about the jobs he does with the Gardaí. He helps the Gardaí to locate missing people and things and has an excellent sense of smell which helps him to do his job really well. Harley was very friendly and he has been trained to listen to the instructions of his garda trainers. Bhí an-chraic again i rith Seachtain na Gaeilge. We celebrated a wonderful night recently as our young pupils received the Sacrament of Penance, they will be making their First Holy Communion on May 13th. Fourth class children are learning how to knit with the help of some very kind ladies from the local community. Knitting is not as easy as it looks but the children are giving it their best shot over the next few weeks. World Book Day. Pupils in both first and fifth class have formed a special bond. Fifth class pupils modelled good reading to first class pupils and were very impressed with the strategies the first Class children had already acquired.

New members always welcome at Blarney Walking Group

The members of Blarney Walking Group have had an active start to 2017, together with the weekly walks, two trips away were enjoyed over the course of the Spring. The club plan to hold local evening walks commencing again in May, these walks were very popular last year. A climb of Croagh Patrick is also in the pipeline. Keep an eye on www.blarneywalkinggroup.ie for full schedule of weekly walks. In February members attended the Dingle Walking Festival, this was the group’s second visit to the well organised and hugely enjoyable event based in and around Dingle. Walks of A, B and C categories were on offer and included Mount Brandon, Slieve an Iolair and The Connor Pass. The organisers of the event had leaders and sweepers in place for all walks so safety was always paramount. Evening entertainment was provided with the many traditional sessions around the town and the Blarney group acquitted themselves admirably, thanks in no small way to the Uilleann pipe playing of John Murphy! A return visit is already in the schedule for 2018. La Le Padraig saw more members head for the Scottish Highlands with John McLaughlin. John has successfully organised a number of these trips over the years. This time the group flew to Inverness and they were based in the area of Ullapool in the Highlands. The following is John`s own account of the adventure. “ Setting off from the Glen Of The Stags or Inis Na Damh (Scotch Gaelic) where the bedrock is the oldest on the planet (Over 3 billion years old!) 11 of us headed off to climb a 3 Corbett (2500ft to 3000ft) horseshoe called Quinag which is managed by The John Muir Trust, as is Ben Nevis. The wind chill at our highest summit was about minus ten degrees and the deteriorating conditions made for an exciting descent back to the managed path in the valley below 7 hours later. The following day we climbed Stac Pollaidh which lies nearer Lochinver and being lower and shorter to trek presented us with an easy 3 hour follow up to Quinag. We visited Corrieshalloch Gorge that morning (Scotlands Grand Canyon) and Knockan Crag Geological Exhibition before the trek to help enlighten ourselves about the seminal scientific discoveries made here regarding plate tectonics and the geological history of the area, and of the planet. We all really enjoyed the challenge and having achieved our objectives are happy to say that It's not about the destination but about the journey. The territory is a magnificent wilderness which all of us felt the privilege of visiting.” Please visit Blarney Walking Group Blogspot where all the photos of this ‘Assynt Adventure’ tell more than a 1000 words every could.

A great St Patrick’s day in Blarney was enjoyed by all, with a fabulous parade, before culminating with a great night at The Castle Hotel where ‘Joe Dolan’ rocked the village into the early hours at the Pieta House Darkness into Light fundraiser.

Your village needs YOU!

Is there any end to it? However hard we work, however much time we give, the rubbish just keeps on coming. It's hard not to get dispirited at times. Blarney Tidy Towns urgently need more people to join the committed but small group of approximately 30 people who keep the village clean. Can you give ONE HOUR a month? Can you commit to keeping your own estate or area clean if we help and take the collected rubbish away? Would you like to plant an area near you if we provide the plants? What can YOU do to help? If you would like to help please call Kate on 087 2330398.

BLARNEY PERSON OF muskerrynews THE YEAR AWARDS 2016 incorporating northcitynews

FREE

www.muskerrynews.biz

The March 2017 Person of The Month is Noel Holmes This month’s nominee is popular local man Noel Holmes. As one of his nominees wrote... “Noel Holmes grew up in Blarney and attended Primary and Secondary school there. He is well known for his success in cycling with the Blarney Cycling Club where he won many National Championships and from his love of cycling grew a successful business, West End Cycle which he opened in 1989 and is still going strong 28 years later. Although bikes have, and still do, play a huge part in Noel' s life, music is his passion. He comes from a musical family, and his dad Tommy along with two of his brothers Billy and David had their own band for years. Noel has been writing and recording

his own music for many years and in the last few has been filming and making videos to go with his songs which are on YouTube, just Google Noel Holmes Music. Coupled with his fascination for horror movies, Noel decided to combine all his talents when he wrote, filmed, directed, produced and provided music for a 30 minute horror short called Jack Scott's Wood. He decided to enter it into a few film festivals to test the waters but little did he know what would happen next. The International Russian Horror Film Festival is one of the biggest of its kind and had 4500 entrants this year from all over the world including films from some well known directors. Noel's film was selected with 44 others for screening. Noel was over the moon

and decided to travel to Moscow with his brother Dermot, who is the main actor in the film. All they wanted was the chance to see their film on the big screen among others from all over the world but that wasn’t the end as, at the awards ceremony on the final night of the festival, Noel's film which was filmed on a shoestring budget with a group of friends won the overall award for best horror short, beating many full time directors with high budgets! Obviously the judges saw Noel's talent and the media at home also reported his success on radio, TV and newspapers. Noel hopes to release Jack Scott's Wood to general audiences in the coming months and is already thinking about his next film.”

Active Schools Flag – we are working very hard to get our Active Schools flag and we are due to have our inspection on the 27th of April, fingers crossed! Apart from our daily Wake-Up Shake Up and various class room stretching exercises such as Drop Everything and Dance and Go-noodle we have played several different matches in a variety of sports over the last few weeks. Our 3rd & 4th class girls made the Sciath na Scol Camogie final on the 16th of March in Na Piarsaigh they played really well and we are very proud of them. Meanwhile our school Sciath Na Scol team played Rennies NS and Aghabullogue NS over the past few weeks. We are meeting Rylane for our final match after Easter. We are looking forward to the INTO Mini sevens blitz which will be held later in the week. Our soccer team played in the FAI Soccer tournament in Blarney recently and 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class have been getting Rugby training from Willie Shubart, Schools Liaison Coach from Munster Rugby over the past four weeks culminating in a Rugby Blitz today in Ballincollig as we go to print.

Mr. Jason O’Mahony from “Children of a Digital Age” gave very interesting and informative presentations to our pupils from 1st to 6th class last Monday, 27th of March. Parents attended a parallel presentation that evening to compliment the one delivered to their children earlier that day. The talk highlighted many of the serious issues surrounding on-line safety and was very beneficial to all concerned. All pupils signed a social media contract and for homework had to discuss the contents of the contract with their parents. This week we are focused on Digital Schools Week. We are using our tablets in school for learning and Mathletics, which is an Online Maths challenge for kids. Everyone can log into Mathletics from home and the

teachers can follow each child’s progress online as well. We tied our St. Patrick day celebrations in with our Reuse, Recycle Campaign this year. Everyone made a fantastic effort to dress up and created some brilliant recycled costumes. We had a parade around the school afterwards which was great fun.

The school book fair was a great success once again this year. Sales from books bought at the fair raised €600 worth of books for the school. Many thanks to all who supported the Book Fair! We look forward to adding new stock to our school library.

Busy term comes to an end at St. Lachteen’s National School

Another busy term comes to an end at St. Lachteen’s N.S. Donoughmore. Firstly, a huge word of congratulations goes to their U13 Credit Union quiz team on their fantastic success in the regional finals and the national finals which were held in the RDS Dublin. The school is very proud of their team Ciara Fox, Maria Murphy, Paul Ring and Kate Honohan. Well done to all of the pupils who have participated in various sporting events this month Sciath na Scoil hurling, camogie and FAI 5 a side football to name just a few. A tremendous effort was put into training for these activities by pupils and staff.

The school recently enjoyed Wellness Week and pupils enjoyed the many activities which were organised for this week. Pupils enjoyed yoga and meditation and worked for the week on their gratitude list. The whole school performed ‘Don't Worry Be Happy’ which was really inspiring. Finally pupils from fourth, fifth and sixth have created a wonderful gratitude tree display in the hall over the past weeks, everyone in school

got a paper leaf and wrote something they were grateful for and then a leaf from everybody in the school was added to the gratitude tree. The school’s inspirational quote was ‘Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss you will land among the stars’. Congratulations to their Shining Stars winners and Kind Kid recipients for this month.

Pupils from 5th and 6th class continue to monitor the progress of their ‘Sow and Grow’ plants and are really looking forward to harvest time. Cookery classes have also been very popular this term with pupils enjoying baking using recipes from the ‘Taste of Donoughmore’ cookery book. Junior and Senior Infant classes have really enjoyed the themes worked on as part of the Aistear Programme, and pupils had great fun exploring the Optician and Dentist. A word of thanks to the Parents Council for their help in organising the school’s Bingo fundraising night, a fantastic night was had by pupils, parents and staff.

A very special sponsored walk took place in Blarney last Saturday to honour the memory of a very special man Liam Manley who died just over a year ago whilst his wife Jackie was in Sierra Leone, with other family members, to officially open a school they had raised funds to build and equip. Because of what happened to Liam both events will be forever linked in the hearts of his family and it was fitting to remember him with this proactive and active event, doing something that Liam loved to do, a huge crowd joined Liam's family and friends for the walk All funds raised on the walk are going directly to build the first ever special needs school in West Africa, and you can find out more, or donate, by visiting www.schoolsandhealthfoundation.com

Blarney Primary School - the Heart of the Community

Spring is in the air and after school activities at Scoil Chroí Íosa have really got in gear. Our community garden has adopted a life of it's own. Every evening sees parents and children getting dug in (for more information contact Mrs O'Callaghan at the school). The younger children are really building up our Thursday and Friday Lego Club. Our sporting hero's in the Senior Classes are busily training for the ongoing hurling championships, drawing on the very successful school training program organised by Blarney GAA.

Our first class children bravely took to the stage in the City Hall. They performed a medally of songs as gaeilge and each child grew in confidence as a result. Ms. O'Keeffe organised an Easter Egg hunt to end the Lenten period. Guímis go mbeidh Cáisc naofa ag gach clann i Scoil Chroí Íosa agus saoire shona agaibh.

SMGS, Blarney

It was a very special day for Scoil Mhuire gan Smal, and Blarney village, when celebrated poet Brendan Kennelly read to the Transition Year students. The poet, for the first time ever, will feature on the Higher Level English course in 2019 and one of the poems Kennelly chose to recite was the much loved 'Begin', suitably fitting for this school as it welcomes a new beginning. His poetry, his wit and his words of wisdom kept the students enthralled and amused in turn. When asked where his inspiration for his poetry came from Brendan told them, 'Take it as it comes... as God gives it to you', before he advised the young people to 'Keep educating yourselves, through yourself, via others.' Brendan received a magnificent, and unique, hand carved book celebrating his birthplace Kerry and his poetry from teacher Peter French, and a cake was also brought out in honour of his impending birthday. 2019 will be a memorable year for students of Scoil Mhuire gan Smรกl as they will be studying Kennelly's poetry in a brand new, state of the art school. Work is due to commence on the new school shortly and will mark the beginning of an exciting, new chapter for this already vibrant school community.

Arrival of puppy Katie celebrates an incredible 10 year journey

Six week old golden retriever puppy Katie, and her seven, as yet, unnamed brothers and sisters, mark an incredible 10 year journey for Irish charity Dogs for the Disabled. Katie is the 200th puppy to be born within this life changing Irish charity which, on April 21st, will celebrate 10 years. Katie, and the other 199 assistance dogs and pups in training at this wonderful charity, really are the gift that keeps giving. Katie, like most of the pups, started her life in The Dochas Centre at Mountjoy Prison where she is being looked after, and loved, and given a unique start in life by the female inmates. At approximately eight weeks all the pups leave to be homed in communities around Ireland, living with families who socialise them, before they move to Shelton Abbey at approximately 18 months to be trained by inmates, under the supervision of the charity trainers. This gives the inmates valuable life skills and the opportunity to give back to society, whilst being hugely beneficial for the charity as it allows them to train more puppies in a cost effective manner. This unique Charity, the only one of it’s kind in Europe, was the brainchild of Jennifer Dowler who has been providing dogs to children and adults with physical disabilities for over a decade after realising she had a natural ability to work with dogs and people with life limiting disabilities. Jennifer, a mother of three young children who lives in Dripsey, has put more than twenty years into perfecting this talent, and has transformed more than 100 lives in the process. As Jennifer said, “Disability can lead to isolation, loss of confidence and feelings of low self-esteem. Not only that but for many people living with a disability being unable to do even a simple task, like picking up the post, can leave them feeling depressed and dependent. Dogs for the Disabled trains dogs to assist with practical, everyday tasks to help a person with a disability to live life to the full, breaking down barriers to the outside world and helping to improve confidence and stress levels.” Over 80% of the charity’s clients are children, between the ages of 6 and 12 years, living with severe physical disabilities which affects their independence and social interaction. These assistance dogs are especially trained to assist the physically disabled to carry out a range of practical tasks in order to achieve greater independence. These everyday tasks include opening and closing doors, picking up dropped items, emptying the washing machine and helping a child with severe walking difficulties to walk with greater ease and balance. With 200 dogs and puppies nationwide and 135 qualified, it costs the charity €15,000 to train and support each assistance dog. Dogs for the Disabled receive no government funding, relying completely on the generosity of sponsorship, donations and fundraising, and the dogs are partnered with disabled people at no cost to the recipient. Each assistance dog is trained to help his or her new partner but is also reliant on them to provide for their needs including exercise, feeding, love and care. As a result, this encourages them to become more active and outgoing in their community by taking their assistance dog for walks and engaging with the public, increasing confidence, and encourages them to take up new activities such as returning to work or further education.

The charities partnerships have found the experience for getting an assistance dog life changing. “Seeing children and adults lives transformed because they can now walk unaided or go out on their own for the first time is incredibly rewarding”, said Jennifer, “ The charity aims to make a positive life changing difference to children and adults lives whilst remaining true to

Six Month Smiles

What if I told you that you could have straight teeth by about the time of your next dental cleaning? Six Month Smiles is a unique cosmetic option for adults who don't want comprehensive orthodontic treatment-either because of the length of treatment time or the appearance of metal braces. In the past, many patients felt stuck with their unattractive smile. But now, this magic formula of short treatment times and aesthetic braces is changing lives all over the world!

our core values of honesty and transparency, and treating people with dignity and respect." Whilst Jennifer is delighted to have reached this ten year milstone, it is tinged with sadness at the knowledge that they currently have 80 children on their waiting list, all of whom could have a very different, and far more fulfilling, life if they were partnered with an assistance dog. The charity is currently looking for a site on which to build a headquarters so they can move out of our temporary rented base in Abbeyville, Togher which is not suitable for us to train our partnerships in. To move forward and provide the service our clients deserve, they really need to purchase and develop our own permanent site, where they can grow and develop our service into the future. Dogs for Disabled are holding a celebration on April 21st 2017 at the charity’s headquarters at Summer Lea House, Togher rd, Togher Cork from 12noon to 4pm to thank the many people who have helped them during the past decade. Light refreshments and children’s entertainment will be provided at this free event, all welcome, but please leave your pet dogs at home. Dogs for the Disabled, which is accredited by Assistance Dogs International, is always looking for puppy socialisers, volunteers and fundraising opportunities as they receive no government funding. If you would like to find out more about how you can help them to continue to make a positive life changing difference to children and adults lives please contact 021 431 6627 / info@dogsfordisabled.ie You can find more information about Dogs for the Disabled at dogsfordisabled.ie

Boxers Elaine Seacy from Midleton and Cheyanne Breen from Blarney, getting ready for action at the 'Big Heart Fight Night' in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation, at the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork

Dara’s Diary

In addition to my duties in Brussels & Dublin in my capacity as Minister for European Affairs and Data Protection, I’m always glad of an excuse to attend local events, and to bring events to the area - as my home and heart lie in Cork North Central. CLÁR funding available to Cork community groups and schools to support innovative local initiatives Cork community groups and schools can apply for funding through the CLÁR programme for a wide variety of works in rural areas including playgrounds, car parks, public lighting, bus shelters, pedestrian crossings, speed safety signs and other safety measures at schools. CLÁR forms part of a suite of measures introduced by Fine Gael to support our rural communities. Other important schemes such as the Rural Recreation programme and Town and Village Renewal Scheme will also open for applications shortly. The programme, which has a budget of €5 million this year, forms part of the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development, which was launched in January 2017. I would strongly encourage community groups and schools in Cork to apply for funding through the CLÁR programme, which aims at improving the safety and well-being of children, parents and local communities. The scope of the programme will also be extended this year to provide capital funding for innovative, community based projects that do not qualify for other established schemes. Applications must be made through our local authority so I would encourage groups and schools with an idea or project proposal to make contact with Cork County Council. We have all seen the important role that our local volunteers and emergency first responders play in our communities across Ireland, with the recent coastguard helicopter tragedy, therefore I am pleased that my colleague Minister Ring has announced a new initiative under CLÁR to support voluntary first-response organisations who provide an excellent service in rural areas, very often under very difficult circumstances. This funding will enable them to purchase or upgrade equipment that is fit for purpose in assisting them in their life-saving activities. Increased Government funding for youth groups Last week, Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone announced that €10.6 million is being allocated in funding to support youth groups, including – Macra na Feirme (€454,194), Foróige (€2,746.30), Scouting Ireland (€876,337), Youth Work Ireland (€2,066.21), the National Youth Council of Ireland, (€594,037), Youth Theatre Ireland (€104,453), An Óige (€185,117), Young Men’s Christian Association (€155,197), Young Irish Film Makers (€59,959) and the Irish Girl Guides (€392,124). I am delighted that a wide cross-section of youth groups, ranging from sports to scouts and music and theatre groups in both urban and rural areas, will benefit from the €10.6 million funding announcement made by the Minister. Youth support organisations such as Macra na Feirme, are a vital social lifeline for young people in rural areas of Cork and across the country. The work of youth groups is critically important in helping young people to realise their full potential and encourage them to get involved with local community volunteer activities. Involvement in youth groups can help tackle disadvantage, provide a safe space for our young people and an alternative to anti-social behaviour, crime and drugs. The funding announcement for youth groups is also a rebalancing of the cutbacks of the past. Up to €10.6m is being provided in funding, an increase of 5% and as the economic recovery continues to build momentum, the Government is committed to providing more resources to support youth groups. Passport renewals go digital ending a bygone age of long queues

Last month the Government launched the Online Passport Application Service (OPAS), making it easier for us all to renew our passports. The new service which will allow adult Irish citizens in Ireland and across the world to apply to renew their passports via the Department’s website using their desktop PC’s, tablets or mobile phones. The launch of the Online Passport Application Service (OPAS) is a further progressive step in the move to bring all Government services online in the near future, and follows the launch of online services by the Department of Social Protection and also Revenue. Irish consumers are amongst the highest early adopters in the EU, using their mobile devices for online shopping and e-Banking, and therefore there is a growing demand for State agencies and Government Departments to bring services online. Applicants will have the choice of renewing their passports via their personal computers, tablets or mobile phones; having their photos taken in one of the digital “Photo-Me” booths located around the country; or going to a photo provider such as a photographer or pharmacy who can provide them with a digital photo on a CD, USB or by e-mail. This streamlined service will allow applicants the convenience of submitting information, including photographs, digitally and will avoid the need for witnessing of forms and the printing of photographs. People can apply via the Department of Foreign Affairs website at www.dfa.ie using their PCs, tablets or mobile phones.

News of merger hits the headlines in Ballincollig!

Following the failed merger between Racing 92 and Stade Francais, news of another merger has hit the headlines in Ballincollig. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a spokesperson for Ballincollig Basketball Club, George McKen confirmed that the club propose to merge with Ballincollig Volleyball Club to form a new compromise sport known as Bolleyvall. "The advantages are clear to see, even to a half wit" he said. "For a start it will be beach volleyball - sorry bolleyvall. Teams are only going to have 2 members so instead of 20 teams we can put out 200 teams. Couples can form their very own team and challenge their neighbours to a match over the garden hedge. This is going to be huge. Then all play will be outdoors so there will be no more hall hire costs." When asked about the lack of a beach in Ballincollig he was dismissive. "Sure isn't there a grand bit of gravel below the weir in the Regional Park which will be ideal for training" he said. The prospect of away matches also excited him. " You can forget about travelling to Donoughmore and Douglas in future. We're thinking places like Bondi, California and .......Garretstown." When contacted by the Ballincollig Newsletter for a comment on this exciting development the club chairperson issued a short statement - "No comment!". However we have learned from an unreliable source that a Extraordinary General Meeting of the club was held to vote on this proposal on 1st April 2017. Ladies Match News Cork Girls U14 Team. Congratulation to our three members who have been selected on the Cork U14 Team, Caoimhe McCormack, Holly Kierans and Caoimhe O’Donovan. Cork Girls U17 Team. Congratulation to Caitlin Quinn who has been selected on the Cork U17 Team. We wish the girls the very best when they travel to Limerick and Belfast later this year. Ballincollig U18 Team. Our Under 18 team travelled to Kanturk recently. In a tense and exciting game Ballincollig started well and led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. However Kanturk dominated the second quarter and reached the half way mark leading by 6 points on a 25-19 score line. Ballincollig rallied in the third quarter and had closed the gap to 2 points by the end of the third quarter. We levelled the match shortly after and retook the lead in the fourth quarter. Defending well under pressure from Kanturk, we ran the clock down eventually running out winners on a 40-34 final score. Ballincollig are now tied at the top of the league with Midleton and will go into a playoff to decide the league title. Senior Ladies Championship Final Senior Ladies played Glanmire in a much-anticipated Championship final on last Saturday. At the start of the game Glanmire had an exhibition of long range shooting from all angles that had Ballincollig in all sorts of trouble. Ballincollig held their nerves and settled into the game but trailed by nine points at the end of the quarter.

Both teams played their part in a thrilling and fascinating contest that had everything a good final should have. From Ballincollig point of view, while the players were disappointed with the result, the way they came back in the second half from a deficit of twenty four points was outstanding. The character and commitment to each other was evident with everyone supporting each other on and off the court throughout the game. This setback will drive them on to finish the season with a trophy they deserve for their efforts. The Coláiste Choilm gym was busy on Friday night with Girls U12/U14/U16 teams playing some great basketball. Our ever improving U12 team had a victory over Glanmire which gives this large squad of player a huge lift coming to the end of a long season. The U14 Girls played Cobh in a game they needed to win to cement a Top Four placing. This team are also gaining in confidence after a slow start to the season and a lot more is expected from this squad going forward. Cobh defeated us in the first round of the league and were going well in all competitions. Ballincollig girls were up for this game and right from the start they had their opponents under pressure. This trend continued throughout the game and Ballincollig girls came away a great win. Our U16 girls, who were short a number of players, played Cobh. The visitors proved too strong on the night with a convincing win. Men's Match News Our U14A boys team played Fr. Matthews in the last game of the league in Coláiste Choilm. With an unbeaten record before the game and the league title already won hopes were high for Ballincollig going into the fixtures. The large crowd present were treated to a close and exciting game from start to finish. Ballincollig had a slightly better first quarter and led by 16 points to 13. However Fr. Matthews recovered and had the match level at the half way mark. Both teams traded scores throughout the third quarter and were still tied at the quarter end. With everything to play for, the final quarter was fast and furious. Ballincollig edged ahead but were reeled back in again. With a final effort we managed to get a 3 point lead and some solid defending as the clock ran down resulted in a 54-51 victory to Ballincollig. This team now go on to the A.I.C.C. matches which will be held in Derry shortly. Our Division 1 Men's team took on Neptune in B.C.S. recently. The first quarter was close and Ballincollig led by 2 points at the end. Neptune outscored us in the second quarter and led by 1 at half time on a 41-40 score line. However we produced the scores in the third quarter to open up a decisive lead of 13 points. Despite a Neptune fight back we increased this in the final quarter running out winners on a final score of 94-77. Top 4 Playoffs. Most regular league games have been played at this stage in the season. Top 4 games will be ongoing and coaches will inform players when these are taking place. New Members always welcome! A huge thank you to everyone who gave spot prizes and donations for the recently held Blarney Darkness into Light fundraiser for Pieta House. To Ian, Una and all the staff at Blarney Castle Hotel, and everyone who contributed in any way, big or small. To all who brought tickets and came and danced and laughed, thank you for being part of a great night.

Have you tried the new restaurant upstairs at The Muskerry Arms yet? Great service, fabulous food, comfort for all the family and all sporting events live on their big screen. Could you ask for more?

According to Tommy Barker in The Irish Examiner, Blarney businessman Jim McCarthy is behind a €14 million deal

The Irish Examiner reported that, “Dealmakers behind the €14 million purchase of the bulk of the City Quarter investment in Cork city centre from Nama have emerged as the just-re-branded MC2 Accountants, on behalf of private investors. “At their €14m City Quarter acquisition are Jim McCarthy and Sean McSweeney as they rebrand their firm to MC2 Accountants. The swoop marks the start of a new phase of property investment advice and acquisition for the company. Confirmation of their role in the deal was disclosed yesterday as the independently-owned financial services firm McCarthy McSweeney was rebranded as MC2. McCarthy McSweeney, established in 2013 and developed a property investment expertise in acquisitions such as the purchase of the former Anglo Irish Bank offices on Anglesea Street in Cork, and in acquiring premises for the Emporium Bar Group, currently owners of four high profile bars/restaurants and aiming to expand. MC2 are also active in other Munster-based office and residential developments. The firm structured and advised on the City Quarter deal on behalf of private client investors, and although the buyers weren’t know at the time, the c €14m deal was reported here in January when it was noted that Derry O’Regan and partners of the Soho bar group would run the former Boardwalk bar grill and restaurant. Now, it’s emerged the Soho group (which includes Séan McCarthy and Jon Cronin) and who’ve also redeveloped Paddy the Farmers and East Douglas Village, are separately buying the Boardwalk for an undisclosed price within the City Quarter deal. The €14m investment sale at City Quarter, via Isobel O’Regan of Savills for Nama, includes 38,000 sq ft of offices, 14,000 sq ft of ground floor retail/restaurants, and 229 out of 280 car park spaces over two basement levels. The Scott Tallon Walker-designed building, with the adjoining Clayton Hotel, was developed at a cost of €100m by Howard Holdings in the mid 2000s, and currently is 64% vacant, with a rent roll of €654,000. It’s understood that MC2 has deals pending for several un-let portions, including the ground floor area vacated by Landmark Media, once the paperwork with Nama is completed. Speaking at a business breakfast to relaunch McCarthy McSweeney (currently grown to 25 staff) as MC2, director Jim McCarthy commented on the City Quarter sale: “Given that these units have remained empty since the previous tenants vacated, the property offers significant asset management opportunities.”

Blarney’s Civic Guard Barracks

On 10th January 1923, the Commissioner of Public Works wrote to the Secretary of the Minister of Home Affairs informing him that the local assistant architect had visited Blarney and had found that the only suitable accommodation for the Civic Guard was a house near the Muskerry train terminus owned by Mrs. Cotter, a school teacher and wife of Eugene Cotter, also a school teacher, of Emerald House, Blarney. She was prepared to vacate it on receiving a few days’ notice in advance. The building was described as two storied, consisting of two large rooms, one small room suitable as a lock-up, one kitchen fitted with a range, on the ground floor and three large bedrooms and W.C. on the first floor. In the 1980’s the owner of this premises was fitting a bathroom in place of the W.C. when it was found that the W.C. was propped up to the first floor of the building by means of four telegraph poles. There was also a small front garden, a quarter-acre plot at the side and a yard containing a dry closet at the back. The premises were in need of some minor repairs but the owner was not milling to carry them out. The rent demanded, £70 per annum inclusive of rates, was considered high but the owner was not prepared to reduce it. However, it was advised that the premises be hired as temporary quarters for the Civic Guard because there were no alternative premises available. There were no particulars available concerning the tenure of the demolished R.I.C. barracks but enquiries were being made. The Minister for Home Affairs wrote to the Civic Guard Commissioner who by way of his Deputy Commissioner, Eamon O’Cugain sent a telegram to Supt. Edward P. Cullen in charge of Cork East Riding directing him to call to Mrs. Cotter and secure the premises from her. The rental agreement was secured by Supt. Cullen and a unit of Civic Guards consisting of one Sergeant and four Guards arrived and took up residence in Blarney on 24th May 1923. The first appointed Sergeant-in-Charge was David Flynn, Sergeant 2444, (19021928). He was born on January 5th 1902. He was a native of Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick and served in the I.R.A. from 1918. He was appointed to the Civic Guards on 17th November 1922 and recommended by Patrick M. English, Captain Adjutant of the West Limerick Area, Newcastlewest and Rev. J.M. Canon Cregan, P.P., The Presbytery Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. He was transferred to Blarney Station on 15th May 1923. The first appointed Garda of Blarney Station was William Barrett, Garda 3266, (1898-1971). He was born on 2nd February 1898. He was a native of Killahan, Abbeydorney, Co. Kerry, served in the I.R.A. from 1916 to 1922. He was appointed to the Civic Guards on 29th January 1923 and recommended by Captain P. Sheehan, Ballymullen Barracks, Tralee, Co. Kerry and Rev. J.J. O’Sullivan, P.P., Abbeydorney Co. Kerry. He was transferred to Blarney Station on 15th May 1923. On the 1st September 1923 the Board of Works discovered that the former R.I.C. barracks was held on a yearly agreement at £20 per annum, including maintenance and rates and that the owner Sir George St. John Colthurst, was prepared to let it for use for the Civic Guards. On 9th October 1923, Sergeant David Flynn 2444, applied for a telephone, and in support of his application, he stated: “The wires were twelve or fourteen yards away and it could be installed in one day easily. When every-time anybody will ring us up from Cork at present, we have to go to the military barracks which is a few hundred yards away. Mrs. (Hannah) Forrest who is on the telephone exchange has to call to the station every time there is a call for the Civic Guards and this gives her a considerable amount of trouble. The telephone inspector was here in Blarney about a week age and she was more than surprised that we had not a telephone. She said it would cost very little to get one into the barracks especially now as the connection to John Corkeran’s is cut off.” The application for the telephone was successful and the telephone number allocated to the station was ‘Blarney 3’. There were forty telephone lines connected to the Blarney Telephone Exchange which was situated at the rear of Blarney Post Office. Initially three of these lines were available for connection to Cork.

with part of the old walls still standing and the landlord, Sir George St. John Colthurst sought a definite commitment from the authorities that they would occupy the building as a station, other-wise he would re-build the station on a different plan to suit some other purpose. Sir George sough an advance of compensation due to him for the damage caused to the R.I.C. barracks in 1920 as same was being withheld by the Minister for Finance as it was alleged certain taxes amounting to the same sum as the compensation were unpaid. Sir George lodged an appeal with the Inspector of Taxes and represented through his agent that he was not in a position to have the work of restoring the barracks put in hands. However, the matter was amicable resolved and the restoration was proceeding satisfactorily by September 1924. On 23rd December 1924, the transfer from the ‘old’ station at the Emerald House was made to the ‘new’ refurbished station which was formerly occupied by the R.I.C. It was leased by Sir George St. John Colthurst at a rent of £30 per annum, payable half-yearly on 30th June and on 31st December, with the landlord being liable for rates, taxes and maintenance. On 18th December 1924, Supt. Louis O’Byrne sought a telephone extension from the Day-room to the new Superintendent’s Office. However, it was not until 13th January 1926 that an extension was actually fitted. Other items fitted to the station included shutters and blinds for ten windows, two lockers and shelves in the kitchen. The Sergeant-in-Charge of the station was required to reside in the station where married accommodation was provided. On 9th November 1925, Sergeant Francis Crowe, 288, a former member of the R.I.C. made an unsuccessful application to live in alternative accommodation outside the station. He stated: “the married accommodation is inadequate and unsuitable. The two rooms on the second landing set apart for married accommodation, the walls of which are roughly finished and are not distempered or white-washed. There is no provision for cooking and the married family would have to rely on the men’s kitchen for cooking. There is but one lavatory, which is situated on the outside of the barrack, and though there’s a water supply in the barrack, the lavatory is a non-flush. My family consists of a wife and a female relative who is more-or-less an invalid and aged 31 years. I had an interview with Sir George Colthurst today, as a result, of which he informed me that he would have to let me know on Friday next, if a house, his property, 17 or 18 yards from the barrack would be at my disposal. I arrived on transfer from the Depot (Dublin) on the 3rd inst. And as I learned before I left that the accommodation in the barracks was unsuitable, I had to leave my wife and family and effects after me at No. 9 married quarters, Phoenix Park Depot.” Supt. John J. Cooney, although sympathising with his request to sleep outside was unable to facilitate Sergeant Crowe in this regard. The Superintendent applied for a separate water closed for his own use inside the building. However, the Board of Works could not fulfil this requirement as there was no swage system in the village. The above items are part of a much larger article titled ‘Policing in Blarney’ by Jim Herlihy and published in Issue No.6 ‘Old Blarney’.

On 23rd October 1923, Supt. P. Fahy, Cork, suggested that the old R.I.C. barracks be secured as a station as it was in a more convenient place and that the present station was not suitable as a married quarters as there would be no privacy for a family. A report was then sought by the Commissioner as to the condition of the old R./I.C. Barrack whereupon it was found that it was completely knocked down

Blarney Garda Siochana Barracks

The next illustrated lecture of the Blarney and District Historical Society is on Thursday 4th May 2017 at 8pm in Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál (Blarney Secondary School). Titled ‘May Day Magic: Fairies, Witches and Dew-Charms’, the guest speaker is Dr. Jenny Butler-Lecturer in the Study of Religions U.C.C. Since the date is quite close to May Day (May 1st), the focus of Dr. Butler’s talk will be on the fairies and the traditional celebration of the start of summer. This would bring in some legends of the Sídh (fairies) as well as historical (and continuing) customs. Who were the Sídh? Why do we still believe in and, sometimes, fear them? Dr. Butler also discusses how the earliest May Day celebrations appeared in pre-Christian times. It is also associated with the Gaelic word Bealtaine. The day was a traditional summer holiday in many pre-Christian pagan cultures. Everybody welcome. Enquiries to Brian Gabriel 087 2153216 bg1@eircom.net

Behind the Castle Walls with Adam, Head Gardener Blarney Castle

March has been another busy month in the gardens and we are well into spring. The colours around the garden are breathtaking at the moment. Emerging leaves form vivid spreads of reds, yellows and orange which compliment the endless drifts of spring bulbs and impressive displays from our magnolias, cherry’s, rhododendrons and azaleas. It really lifts your spirits! Our giant rhododendron arboreum ‘Cornish Red’ is in full flower at the moment and well worth a look. A lot of our more recently planted magnolia species are coming into flower for the first time this year, which is very satisfying.

All smiles at Blarney Community Playschool coffee morning and fundraiser at Blarney GAA club

We have another new project underway in our kitchen garden. We are building a bee observation house which will offer visitors an opportunity to look into our kitchen garden and see working bee hives. There will be information on bee keeping, as well as on conservation and biodiversity. We hope to have this open by midsummer.

There have been a lot of ‘housekeeping’ jobs to do this month, including mulching beds, resurfacing paths, feeding and scarifying lawns, pruning and tidying shrubs and when possible a little bit of weed killing on the hard surfaces. I find if you get on top of things early, it makes it a lot easier later. April is usually a very active month in the gardens. Everything is coming into growth and the regular maintenance work starts to come online and eat into our available time. Jobs for the next few weeks include sowing sweet corn, runner beans and outdoor salad crops, carrots, parsnips and beetroot. Plant out onions, shallots and potatoes if you haven’t already. Plant indoor tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and tie in and pinch out new growth on the grape vines, hand pollinate indoor peaches to ensure a good quality crop, sow herbs, check for greenfly both indoors and out. A good tip for dealing with greenfly is mix some washing up liquid and water vigorously in a jug to make a lot of foam, then apply this directly to the infested areas to completely cover the aphids. It works very well! I have recently organised a talk in Blarney Castle Hotel on Friday 21st of April at 7.30pm titled ‘Collecting Hardy Plants in Northern Vietnam’ by Bleddyn WynnJones, who is a veteran plant hunter and specialist nursery owner. It’s a rare opportunity to see him speak and the evening will also be the official launch night of Botanic Network Ireland which I have recently been involved in setting up. There is a drinks and snacks reception on arrival and a rare plant raffle afterwards. Entry is 25e on the night. For more details email: botanicnetworkireland@gmail.com Our recent trip to Vietnam has proved to be extremely rewarding and we have around 150 new plant species growing in our glasshouses. There are even several possible new discoveries in amongst them. As these plants are established in the grounds and gardens, they will provide a conservation life line for the future. Many of the species are endangered in their native range and it is increasingly likely that ex-situ conservation may be the only hope to ensure their survival. I look forward to seeing you in the gardens. Adam

Muskerry RFC U12s head to France! Allez les bleus! In keeping with Muskerry R.F.C.’s proud tradition of taking underage teams to France, this year’s U12 team flew out to Biarritz in south western France on April 7th. The players trained diligently under coaches Niall Coughlan and Eddie O’Callaghan in preparation for the trip and travelled in tip top condition for the challenge ahead. The full tour party consisted of 27 players and 28 adults and an action packed agenda was put in place for the players that will no doubt give them lifelong memories. Muskerry played in a blitz on the morning of April 8th near Biarritz against two other sides: local team Soustons, and French super-power Racing 92 from Paris. On Saturday evening they went to see a Top 14 game between Bayonne and Stade Francais. Great credit must go to the players and their parents for completing a significant amount of fundraising such as a sponsored walk and table quiz which saw the cost of the trip being significantly reduced for the players. They had an excellent Tour Committee who put significant time into organising the fundraising events, travel arrangements and tour kit. As ever the team would not function without the dedication of the coaches and the support from our mini rugby officer Aedh McGinn. The team’s tour kit was presented to the players in the Muskerry clubhouse by Munster and Ireland legend Donncha O'Callaghan, and Muskerry R.F.C. president Stephen Griffin. Stephen closed the presentation by leading the players in a rendition of the "The Bould Thady Quill” to have them in fine voice for France.

When Michael O’Riordan from Grenagh was diagnosed with cancer in 2016, his life took a turn that he never expected. Stephen Lehane reports on his friends ordeal..

It was early July 2016, and 15 year old Michael O’Riordan was spending his time at the local GAA field in Grenagh, playing hurling and hanging out with friends. On July 18th he was diagnosed with embryonic rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare but treatable cancer. The news hit Michael hard. He went from anger to sadness to fear, he thought "Why me?" Weeks after Michael's diagnosis, he made a decision that he would beat his cancer, that he would conquer it. He began chemotherapy and radiotherapy in both Crumlin and St Lukes. He would feel nauseous for days after his treatment, struggling to keep a meal down. Michael began to loath everything related to his treatment, the 4 hour car journey to Dublin, even the sight and smell of the cancer ward made him sick. One of the hardest things for Michael was that he was forced to stop playing GAA competitively with his local club Grenagh for both minor and U16 teams. But Michael never stopped playing by himself. During his treatments, after his body was pumped with chemicals in order to kill the cancer in his body, hurley in hand he would hit the sliotar off of any wall he could find. This distracted Michael from both the pain and nausea he would experience. "It always helped to clear my mind, I would play until I annoyed everyone in the ward, playing off the walls until I was too tired, I would play for hours and hours." Michael not only decided to fight the cancer, but he was determined to remain fit throughout his treatment to the best of his ability. When Michael was feeling up to it, during his downtime between rounds of treatment, he would try to be the familiar face at training that he used to be. His close circle of friends and family found it very hard to see Michael deteriorate physically, losing weight and energy, and on November 15th Michael's condition rapidly deteriorated. He was rushed to to hospital immediately with intense pain and discomfort. Michael spent a full week in intense care with a team of doctors working around the clock to keep him alive, and luckily Michael survived although he had a full body infection caused by the initial infection of his Hickman line in his chest for delivering the treatment around his body. He was told afterwards that he was lucky to be alive. It was truly a scary moment for him and his family. Michael continues to inspire all around him with his story, particularly his fellow teammates in Grenagh. The strength and determination of Michael to overcome his sickness incredibly motivating. Michael is now well on his way to recovery, he becomes stronger physically day after day. Michael is now finished his treatment and is free of all cancer, he has returned fully to training and is recovering to play competitively once again. Michael says he couldn't have gone through his ordeal without the support of his family and friends, especially without the support of his girlfriend Emma who was with Michael all the way, constantly visiting and supporting him. "She took my mind off the cancer a lot and she was always the first person I went to when I was upset about it." Michael's family stated that they could not have gone through this ordeal without the support of the local community, with Michael's mother Maggie saying, "We are extremely proud of Michael, it has been a challenging time for the family. As a sixteen year old he remained positive throughout a harrowing treatment. He stayed focused on recovery from day one, nd against all odds he continued his fitness. He is an amazing boy who has inspired many people and we cannot say enough thanks to all those who supported him, we will be forever grateful. We are privileged to have such a wonderful son. This life changing event has made us realise the important things in life, we now know the importance of love, and we love all of our children for their resilience and kindness positivity even in our darkest hours."

March Madness! It’s been an exceptionally busy month for the club, with the launch of our new facilities, the St. Patrick’s Day parade, Who Wants to be a Thousandaire preparations, and of course plenty of matches! Further details of events, fixtures, match reports and photos for our adult and underage teams can be found on the club website at www.blarneygaa.ie. Live match updates are also provided on our Twitter account, @BlarneyGAA

U21 Football Championship The U21 footballers were the first team into championship action and they put in a creditable performance. The lads recorded a narrow defeat to Naomh Abán and a victory over Kilmichael before agonisingly losing to Canovee by 1-11 to 0-10 on a cold night in Cloughduv. The lads were clearly disappointed with the manner of the defeat but can hold their heads high after a very spirited championship campaign. Credit must also go to Paul and Mark O'Leary, Colm Kiely, Tim Duggan and Padraig Conway who had the team very well prepared. The Premier Intermediate hurlers are up and running again, with four games under their belt already. The lads started with a big away win over Cloyne, followed by successive draws against Courcey Rovers and Inniscarra, and a defeat away to Charleville. They have been drawn to face Watergrasshill in the first round of the championship, due to take place in late April. Underage and Club na nOg The future stars of Blarney GAA have made a bright start to the season as they returned to competitive action across various age Under 8’s grades. Under 8. Two teams of 8 took part in a hurling blitz in Mallow on the 26th of March and had a great day. Under 9. The lads have played St. Nick’s in the football league and Under 10’s Bishopstown in the hurling league. They have played excellently throughout their games so far and should be proud of their skills and effort. Under 10. Blarney U10's have played Killavullen Under 14’s and Macroom to date, showing plenty of skill in their outings so far. The lads have shown great promise for the year ahead. Under 12. The U12 footballers took a great away win over Kilmurry in their opening game of the year. They have started as they mean to continue! Under 13. The U13 hurlers started their league campaign with a strong home win over Carrigaline. Under 14. The under 14s are off to a great start, beating Grenagh and Duarigle Gaels in the football league and qualifying for the semi-finals of the county Feile in football after a very strong performance in the group stages, held in Macroom. The lads defeated Owen Gaels (St. Oliver Plunketts, Ballinascarty\Ahiohill) in the quarter final to move on to the

semi-finals which will be played on Easter Monday. Under 15.The lads kicked off their season with home hurling league game against Carrigaline. Under 16. The U16s have already been in action in hurling and football action, starting with a good win over Canovee in the football and a narrow defeat to St. Malachys. They opened the hurling season with defeat to Douglas in the league. Minor. The minor team defeated St. Malachys in their opening football league game and have a busy programme of matches ahead. The Junior A and Junior B hurlers are also back in action, with the A’s recording a win and two defeats so far, and the B’s winning their only game of the season to date. Blarney will face Iveleary in the first round of the Muskerry Junior A championship.

The Junior A football team commenced their season with an away win over Inniscarra. They will face Donoughmore in the opening round of the Muskerry championship, provisionally fixed for early May. Our Who Wants to be a Thousandaire family social night was held in the Commons Inn on Saturday the 8th of April. This event would not have been possible without the extremely generous support of all of our sponsors, particularly Blarney Credit Union, Turf Tech, Christian Brothers College, Kia, Mallow Road Motors, Kelly Brothers, Blarney Oils Limited, John Cleary Development and The Commons Inn For more coverage of the night see blarneygaa.ie

The village was awash with colour for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, with the GAA and Camogie clubs making a strong contribution. Thanks to the generosity of John O’Donovan Haulage and the hard work of Ray Coleman’s team we were able to enter a very impressive float. Club members of all ages brought brilliant enthusiasm on the day and it was enough to win us the ‘best community float’ award on the day!

Schools Coaching. Alan McEvoy, Conor Murphy and Mark Coleman have very kindly agreed to offer their skills as coaches to the local primary schools after Easter. The lads have all represented Cork at various levels and serve as an example to the children of what they can achieve with hard-work, dedication and no-little skill.

GAA, PRO OR NO? Why GAA shouldn’t go professional

Report by Colm Breslin

When you think of the word ‘amateur’ what comes to mind? Unprofessional? Inexperienced? Well when I think of ‘amateur’ I see commitment, passion and drive. I see men and women taking the time out of their normal lives to train and play GAA for club and county. Money is the last thing that comes to mind. Our sport has the most committed and passionate community I have ever seen. These are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. These men and women are extraordinary because they manage to live a double life, a life of work and a life of sport. Many of those you see next to you on the pitch, be it training or a match, are there because they want to be. They forget their working life and leave it all out on the pitch to do their club proud and bring home the silverware, not for money. Ordinary people just like us finding time in their daily lives to go, whatever the distance, to training out of sheer commitment is what makes our sport special. Teachers, nurses, bankers closing up shop in the evening and hopping in the car, with the gear bag packed already, to go to training that night with the same intensity as those being paid hundreds of thousands a week is a testimony of the passion and drive of our ordinary heroes. Dublin camogie player Ali Twomey puts my ideas perfectly into words “People aren’t playing for money or fame, there’s no pay check. People wonder how you juggle college, a part-time job and training but just seeing the others on my team and how much they give up is a huge motivator for me”. Many of our heroes were forged on pitches made more of mud than grass, from farms out in the

sticks or backstreets of cities. But they got where they are today because of their passion, commitment and drive that’s so evident in our sport. Take for example a local man Seamus Harnedy whose recent enough success story of getting on the Cork senior panel was the talk throughout the GAA. Seamus played for and still does for St.Itas, a tiny rural club right next to the beach on the outskirts of Youghal. Back in my grandmother’s time, she recalls farmers lending their land to the club so they could train. Today St.Itas is a place where the two changing rooms are shipping containers, where the pitch is more marram grass and sand than actual grass and where you can cool down after a training session by walking forty yards into the sea. You can see Seamus walking around Youghal doing his shopping because he’s just like us, a citizen humbly playing for county. GAA should never go professional as it would “create a divide that just doesn’t belong in our game” as Donegal senior football captain Michael Murphy stated in a recent interview. “What makes the player any different to the people at the gate collecting money, or those sorting the car-park?” That’s what makes our wonderful sport unique, the way our players are on the same level as us, the fans. We can look them in the eye and see another normal human being just like us, with a job and

family staring back at us. However players need to be compensated for the sacrifices they make when playing inter-county to make sure, as many others have done before, that they don’t burn themselves out and possibly put their career on the line. It’s not like the money isn’t there, after all the GAA has plenty of money made from advertisement deals. We’re not talking about issuing pay checks to our players, no, I’m talking about compensating those who are forced to miss work for a match or training. That’s not too big of a demand. GAA at the moment for many inter-county players is not sustainable as many are putting their passion before their profession. Dublin senior footballer Bernard Brogan has openly admitted to choosing the easiest career path in order to maximise his chances of getting on the panel. By compensating players it avoids the rift between player and people that we fear will be caused. Our players will still be just like us but instead not burnt out. Through compensation, if anything, it will enable our everyday heroes to put even more effort into the game and help them focus on achieving their potential whilst still being able to comfortably hold down their job. Doing this will make GAA a sustainable sport and passion for many. It is stories like Seamus’ and people like Ali and Michael that make the GAA is what it is today. There’s one similarity between these three people, can you guess what it is? They are all where they’re at today because they wanted to be, not because of some allure of being paid big money. That’s what GAA is all about and we should never, ever lose sight of that.
