The Edinburgh Mela Leith Links, Edinburgh : 31 August – 1 September : www.edinburgh-mela.co.uk

Now Scotland’s biggest and best festival of world music and dance, the Edinburgh Mela continues to entice visitors to Leith at the end of Edinburgh’s summer of festivals. This year’s headline act are The Orb, reprising the amazing performance they created with Ghanian master drummers Kakatsitsi at this year’s Glastonbury festival, but the rest of the programme is just as exciting. Look out music from Cuba, West Africa, Brazil, Senegal, Ghana, Spain, Kenya, and China – while still paying tribute to the festival’s roots with a wide range of south Asian music – and showcasing dance styles as diverse as hip hop, flamenco, tango, Capoeira, Chinese fan dance, Indian Kathak, circus, parkour and contemporary movement. 90s dance pioneers The Orb, collaborating with Mela favourites Kakatsitsi Master Drummers from Ghana, are the headliners on Sunday evening. It’s a great collaboration, exploring the similarities between contemporary Western and traditional African forms of dance music, and we’re delighted to be hosting the only other performance of this wonderful collaboration after their triumphant appearance on the West Holts stage of Glastonbury in June. BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne described the show as “one of the highlights of the whole festival”. Of course, the perennial Mela favourites are still present and correct. Over thirty stalls offering up tempting treats from all over the world are available at the Global Food village, this year sponsored by The Cooperative Group; homewares, crafts and beautiful fabrics can be bought at the Mela Marketplace, and our junior

audience members are encouraged to Go Wild at the Mela Kidzone, which this year is all about exploring Scotland’s wildernesses through interactive play.

PROGRAMME DETAILS Cuban supergroup Son Yambu, Bangalore rock pioneers Thermal And A Quarter, Bhangra legends DCS, Navin Kundra and Mumzy Stranger, and the Canadian AsianCeltic fusion dub group Dehli 2 Dublin are among the major attractions on the Main Stage. A strong African theme runs through this year’s programme, from West African percussion and dance group Ayawara, the jazzy Afrogrooves of Senegal’s Samba Sene and awesome displays from Kenya’s Osiligi Masai Warriors, to a three hour multi-artist celebration of African music and dance. On the World Dance Feste stage, Star Crossed, a major new commission reinventing the Romeo and Juliet story, brings together Brazillian Capoeira and Argentinian tango in a passionate, tribal piece of narrative dance featuring Scottish, Brazillian, French, Spanish and Argentinian dancers, choreographed by Irish/ Spanish dance company Pasodos. The Typist is a multimedia piece of narrative flamenco, created by Kerieva McCormick and co-directed by Grid Iron’s Ben Harrison. The festival also welcomes two Scottish premieres of recent major dance works: Jugni, by the Sonia Sabri Company, which re-evaluates the female position within the Sufi devotional tradition of Qawwali, and Crucible, FIPA’s 2013 outdoor production, in which Indian classical dancers on stilts engage with the myths of the Earth Goddess.

A partnership with Edinburgh City Council will see the festival promoting alternative methods of transport – particularly cycling – to the Mela, in an attempt to encourage festivalgoers to leave the cars at home.
