Music for Youth believes in the power of music to transform young people’s lives. Inspirational performance opportunities, such as the Music for Youth Proms, play an incredibly important part in motivating young people to progress in their music making. Research tells us that receiving positive affirmation from others for music activities, particularly in performance, plays a crucial part in enhancing self-belief, whatever the age of the young person, and that if performances are in high status cultural venues, the impact is even greater 1 . It is for this reason that our numerous partnerships with music services and education providers across the country are so important, and that our joint efforts are what make the difference and support such lasting impact on each young musician. Music for Youth believes that the chance to participate in high-quality musical activities should be open to every young person. We are enthusiastic about nurturing not only the next generation of musical talent, but the next generation of young people full stop, evidenced in the tens of thousands of young people we reach across the UK every year.

We have an extensive annual programme, which you can get a flavour for on page two, and we supplement these events with special projects, which seek to give extra attention to particular causes. The culmination of our year of events is the Music for Youth Proms here at the Royal Albert Hall every November. Showcasing performers from all of our different strands of work across the year, the Music for Youth Proms concerts really are a celebration of the very best young musical talent that the UK has to offer. Our regional Massed Ensemble projects reach out further, and include young people with less musical experience – you will hear the culmination of these projects in one performance each night. So, I would like to warmly welcome you to these incredible concerts. We have a very healthy number of student compositions across the three nights, and an exciting mix of performers and musical styles. Where else could you get such a wide-ranging musical education all in one concert? I do hope to see you again next year. Judith Webster Chief Executive

SHINE THE LIGHT BRIGHT Commissioned by Music for Youth

All See us stand here together, You can see we stand as one. A light that shines on forever Through the world like the rise of the sun Should you stumble and fall we will always guide you home You’ll never be alone. Shining bright through the night comes the light of our song. (Repeat)

Voice 1 Sail across the sea freely shine the light bright. Let them see. Voice 2 So if clouds are grey, send them away You can have your say so Shine the light bright, light up the world every day. Voice 3 Now if they say no, just go Shine the light bright, help them come together.

MASSED ENSEMBLES AT THE MFY PROMS “ Treating young musicians like professionals, with top quality lighting, sound and production values makes their performance feel extra special, and is at the heart of what we do at Music for Youth,” Judith Webster, Chief Executive, Music for Youth

WHAT IS A MASSED ENSEMBLE? Massed Ensembles are one of the cornerstones of the Music for Youth Proms, and involve around half of each night’s 1,000 young performers. At each evening of the Proms, a different Massed Ensemble represents a different region of the country and, following months of creative development and rehearsals, hundreds of young people from these regions perform in a once-in-a-lifetime, large scale performance on the world-famous Royal Albert Hall stage.

10  Music for Youth Proms 2017

WHAT DO WE SUPPORT? • Innovation through repertoire and ways of working • Collaborations between groups of different ages and abilities • Good practice in teaching and learning • Opportunities for young people to take part in something beyond their normal experience, meet young musicians they would not otherwise meet and work with artists they would not otherwise have had the opportunity to work with • Audience development – active involvement in securing support for young people

2017 MASSED ENSEMBLES We are delighted to introduce the regional massed ensemble performance projects that will be presented here at the Music for Youth Proms. The three partnerships whose projects were selected are Kingston upon Hull Music Service and Hull Music Hub, Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust, Rutland Music and Peterborough Music Hub and four South Yorkshire Hubs (Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield). WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR WORK TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A MASSED ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE? If you are interested in submitting a proposal, please email mfy@mfy.org.uk

MASSED ENSEMBLE MONDAY 13 NOVEMBER

SOUTH YORKSHIRE MUSIC EDUCATION HUBS (BARNSLEY, DONCASTER, ROTHERHAM AND SHEFFIELD) Jazz Journeys Composer: Chris Noble Director: Dennis Rollins Other creatives: Vocal workshop lead Janet Wood See page 20 for biography

Jazz Journeys (Chris Noble) 1. Griot’s Groove 2. Boogaloo Stomp 3. The Funk 4. Bossa Balloon

Jazz Journeys presents a timeline of jazz, starting at its African roots within the Griot tradition, moving via swing and samba through to present day soul and funk.

South Yorkshire Music Education Hubs massed performance features over 200 amazingly talented young instrumentalists, coming together to create a massed ‘jazz collective’.

The composition emerged from four instrumental workshops of selected young jazz musicians where the groups improvised in a style related to one of the four periods of Jazz history that underpin the piece. From this, material created by the young people was developed to create the final piece. Lyrics were crafted by members of the chorus during in-school workshops. This is a truly unique and original composition driven by the performers themselves.

The ensemble join over 400 young voices from primary schools across the region to perform an original composition by acclaimed Sheffield based composer Chris Noble.

“ It’s a great pleasure to have been selected to compose Jazz Journeys for the wealth of talent that exists among young musicians in South Yorkshire. Working alongside Dennis Rollins has been a fantastic privilege, and I can’t wait to hear the results of several months of hard work from everybody involved. Jazz Journeys promises to have everyone feeling the groove and singing along – it’s a real celebration of all aspects of jazz.” Chris Noble, Composer

WITH THANKS TO An ambitious plan to bring four innovative Hubs together for this project means there are so many people to thank. Teachers, administrators, parent volunteers, leads and most importantly young people from all areas have contributed to the success of this project. We are really excited about the legacy it will bring for our young musicians.

King John’s army river and the sound of red kites high arrive as we approach Sutton Bridge, in the air. A gentle melody represents where the Crown Jewels were lost Higham Ferrers, the childhood home in the marshes. Then the river finally of the composer. Passing Fotheringhay, empties itself into the Wash at the and the distant sound of the Nassington tumultuous end of its 123 mile journey. Brass Band, we approach Wansford and the Peterborough Steam Railway. “But our Molly lives on as a Will’ O the Wisp, As the river flows into the Fens we hear Dancing and playing the tragic story of Molly, who was lost on the fens in the mist, in the river, but as a “Will ‘o the Wisp” And lighting the paths when guides lost travellers. the ways are not known, And guiding the wearisome traveller home.”

MASSED ENSEMBLE WEDNESDAY 15 NOVEMBER

KINGSTON UPON HULL MUSIC SERVICE AND HULL MUSIC HUB Swerving East Composer: Tom Lawrence Musical Director: Sam Dunkley See page 29 for biography

To celebrate Hull’s year as City of Culture as it reaches its fourth season, ‘Tell the World’, Hull Music Hub commissioned a special piece for the massed youth ensemble known as #Hear Hull.

Ringing bells announce the final section, ‘a cut-price-crowd’, where the journey continues through the city and out over the coastline. Wind, brass, percussion and string sections lead us to the calmness of a chamber choir describing the ‘unfenced existence’ at the journey’s end.

Composer Tom Lawrence has drawn on the poetry of Philip Larkin to create an atmospheric work called Swerving “Swerving East is the perfect vehicle East celebrating Hull and its people. for displaying the musical talents of the City’s young people. Tom Lawrence An opening fanfare precedes an has devised a work that utilises the early-morning arrival, swerving east range of instruments and styles through the mists towards Hull. A taught by our Music Service while also strongly rhythmic section builds to the giving the opportunity for schools entry of the choir, where Larkin’s stark to engage pupils in a meaningful, and evocative descriptions of the city exciting and challenging project.” Chris Maynard, Head of Hull Music Service and surrounding countryside are underscored by jazz band, percussion ensemble and symphony orchestra.

WITH THANKS TO The Hull 2017 City of Culture Team and to the City of Hull Young Musicians’ Friends’ Association for grants to make this project possible; to participating schools, pupils and staff, to the staff of the Hull Music Service and most importantly, to composer Tom Lawrence and Musical Director, Sam Dunkley.

From professional ensembles to conservatoires, and from specialist national bodies to world class concert venues, this programme offers one-off exclusive development opportunities designed to inspire the young musicians and their teachers. The events can range from a day of workshops with the Royal Marines Band Service to a year of one-to-one mentoring by a professional composer. “Our experience with Music for Youth has meant so much for ‘Gutted!’ as a group. Esme Bridie’s style combines flowing angelic vocals and clear finger picked guitar. She draws influences from classic singersongwriters such as Carole King, Paul Simon and Leonard Cohen. Klee Music describe her style as “mature beyond her years” and as having “a rare quality of songwriting craftsmanship”. Both of the songs performed are original compositions written over the past year. They have lyrical themes of love and loneliness and are drawn from personal experiences. Esme Bridie

Loughborough Endowed Schools Massed Strings was formed in November 2016 and has gone on to give several performances, including an appearance in the schools large gala concert in De Montfort Hall, Leicester. The group is made up of students from a family of four schools who all share a large music school, where every Year 2 child learns a stringed instrument through a Kodaly based approach. Tonight’s group includes students from every school year from Year 4 through to Year 13 so rehearsals have been challenging, inspiring, hard work, and very enjoyable. Most of all the project has fostered community, offered vision for the youngest students and encouraged a sense of leadership and mentorship for the older players.

COLERIDGE CARNIVAL CREW

Coleridge Community College’s Carnival Crew consists of 40 students from Year 9 and Year 10. The vibrant and diverse group incorporates a range of backgrounds and abilities, which is reflected in their colourful t-shirts designed one by of the group’s surdo players – Maha Kikambi. With very little technical training and little to no exposure to music and dance beyond the school classroom for most, these students have really risen to the challenge and created an impressive, colourful Carnival vibe. For many of these students this will be their first time (aside from the Music for Youth National Festival) performing in, or even visiting an external music event.
