WELCOME TO THE NATIONAL FESTIVAL

A WORD FROM OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE We are delighted to be back in Birmingham for our fourteenth National Festival, from 3–7 July, to celebrate incredible young music-making in some of the UK’s most renowned music venues. 10,000 young people will come together once again to make music, be inspired by experts and be part of something special. As we get closer to celebrating Music for Youth’s 50th anniversary in 2020, it’s fitting that this year’s National Festival is bigger and better than ever. Highlighted in my Festival Picks below, 2018 sees a brand new Fringe Takeover at Town Hall including two Massed Ensemble performances; the first Schools Concert for local

primary aged children (see Page 15) and a spectacular jazz evening presented by Jazz FM’s 2017 Instrumentalist of the Year, Nikki Yeoh. As always, we’re excited to be returning to three fantastic venues – Symphony Hall, Town Hall and CBSO Centre – and this year sees us host two days of the festival at the new Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Please do read on for more information about exactly what’s on during our National Festival, there truly is something for everyone. I hope you have a wonderful time.

SUPPORT US HELP US GIVE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCES “ The festival enabled us to grow as a group, improve, enjoy watching others do what we love and make so many amazing memories!”

ABOUT US Annually, Music for Youth gives more than 60,000 young people from all backgrounds the opportunity to take part in large-scale performance events, for free. Our programme uniquely brings together young musicians of all abilities from across the UK to make music. Through our work, we seek to nurture not only the next generation of musicians, but the next generation full stop. As a registered charity, the support of businesses, trusts and foundations, and individuals is vital. We are immensely appreciative of all those who currently support us. However, we still need to raise a significant proportion of our income to ensure we can continue to make a positive impact on young lives.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE By making a donation, you will provide opportunities for young people, for example: • £25 gives one young musician the unforgettable experience of performing at the Royal Albert Hall • £50 pays for a classroom of Primary School children to experience their first MFY Primary Prom • £250 provides a Music Mentor to support groups at our events

HOW TO DONATE • At the festival, please look out for our donation buckets and card donation points! • To donate £10 text MFYX10 £10 to 70070 • You can donate anytime on our website at mfy.org.uk/donate • If you would like to know more about supporting us or would like to discuss a gift, please contact Sal Goldsmith, Head of Development, at sal@mfy.org.uk or call her on 020 7759 1834 Charity number: 285831

GET PROFESSIONAL WITH THE BAND OF HER MAJESTY’S ROYAL MARINES COLLINGWOOD

CREATIVE MUSIC-MAKING FOR EVERYONE WITH TRINITY COLLEGE LONDON

Renowned composer, multiinstrumentalist, teacher and performer, Joe Broughton will work with instrumental groups on your performance, the importance of how to carry yourself, getting your heads out of the music, demonstrating the difference in the sound when you feel different, how far to go in acting the music etc.

Get a feel for what it’s really like to work in a professional band. Musicians from the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood lead a typical Marine’s rehearsal. Participating musicians will meet the pros, and play side by side for a joint rehearsal of light repertoire, providing a high quality musical experience and a shared sense of achievement.
