I always enjoy the moment when first time guests attending the Music for Youth Proms realise the magnitude of the event they are witnessing, and that their preconceptions about what young musicians can achieve fall short of the mark. They don’t usually expect a spectacular live show with nearly 1,000 young performers each night, fantastic musicianship and incredibly high production values. Music for Youth strives above all to be inclusive. We do our utmost to remove barriers to participation, working with partners across the country to address the issues they face in enabling young people from all walks of life to have equal access to sustained music making opportunities. With the number of young people learning music in school currently decreasing, it is ever more crucial that organisations like Music for Youth support the efforts of grass roots music education providers, and that we include those young people learning music beyond the school setting. This year, we present our first lunchtime concert in the Hall’s Elgar Room, Spotlight On: Strings (see page 25), and we are delighted to present three large scale regional partnership projects (Massed Ensembles) across three nights. These 600 strong projects are the cornerstone of the Proms and directly address our ambitions around inclusion.

On Monday, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra lead a project which includes two SEND schools and members of the National Open Youth Orchestra project, the world’s first disabled-led national youth orchestra. Tuesday brings us a partnership led by Leicester-Shire Schools Music Service involving 24 schools across the region, as well as a partnership with musicians from the Darbar Arts Culture Heritage Trust. Finally, Wednesday’s project is presented by Oxfordshire County Music Service, and has involved secondary school choirs buddying children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) who either attended their own mainstream schools, or special schools. Members of two youth orchestras and a theatre group did likewise and the whole music project centred around this buddying scheme. (see pages 13, 14 and 15 for details). To continue this theme, for the first time ever the finale to each concert has been written by a young musician. ‘Let’s Get Together’ by Peter Morgan, a student on the RNCM Popular Music degree course, will close each evening – sung and performed by all 1,000 musicians . ABOUT US Annually, Music for Youth gives more than 60,000 young people from all backgrounds the opportunity to take part in large-scale performance events, for free. Our programme uniquely brings together young musicians of all abilities from across the UK to make music. Through our work, we seek to nurture not only the next generation of musicians, but the next generation full stop.

REMEL LONDON PRESENTER
Remel London is a bubbly and energetic award-winning radio and television presenter and host, born and raised in North London. Remel has quickly risen up the ranks and carved a solid reputation in the UK entertainment industry and continues to make a national name for herself. Known for her love of UK music and entertainment Remel can be heard on Capital XTRA and seen as the lead presenter of SKY 1’s What’s Up TV.
Remel started her career as the face and lead presenter of online platform Link Up TV as well as the official host of ILUVLIVE for three years before progressing to hosting live shows across the country. Her music knowledge has caught the attention of major industry players, and she was added as a member of the MOBO Awards panel in 2013–2015 and later became the official Red Carpet Host for the brand. An avid blogger with over 12K followers on Twitter and over three million views across various YouTube channels her social media influence is set to grow even further in future. @Remel_London /Remel_London @remel_london

LET’S GET TOGETHER, PETER MORGAN Music for Youth is delighted to announce that for the first time ever the closing song for each of our 2018 Proms concerts, which will be performed by all 1,000 young musicians each evening, has been written by a young singer songwriter under the age of 21. ‘Let’s Get Together’ was submitted by Peter Morgan, a 19 year old singer songwriter from Cardiff, currently studying on the RNCM’s Popular Music degree course.

Pete received mentoring and support from Patrick Bailey, an MFY Music Mentor, to arrange his pop song for a full symphony orchestra, big band and several hundred young voices! Patrick will be conducting the finale each evening, and we are very pleased that Pete and his family will be joining us on Tuesday evening. Music for Youth is grateful to Andy Stott (RNCM) and Patrick Bailey for helping to make this exciting project a reality, and to Pete for meeting every one of our extremely challenging deadlines!

MUSIC FOR YOUTH REGIONAL EVENTS MUSIC FOR YOUTH IS PROUD TO REACH AROUND 40,000 YOUNG MUSICIANS EACH YEAR THROUGH AN EXTENSIVE SERIES OF REGIONAL EVENTS RUN BY MANY LONG STANDING MUSIC EDUCATION PARTNERS.
From 2019 the range of events which make up our regional programme will broaden further still. We will maintain our programme of Regional Festivals, including a number of Contemporary Regional Festivals, which focus on rock, pop and urban music (previously called RPU Festivals). For all of these events, any group can register for a place directly through Music for Youth’s website. They are open access, with no minimum standard of performance. The Festivals are a fantastic opportunity for young musicians to share their music making, listen to other groups from their area and gain expert advice from professional musicians and music educators: our Music Mentors.
All young people and teachers taking part in a Network event gain feedback from MFY Music Mentors, and are invited to subsequent MFY national events later in the year, such as the National Festival and Festival Fringe. If you would like to be part of the 2019 Regional Festivals please visit mfy.org.uk/regional. Registrations close on Thursday 29 November 2018. If you would like to submit an event to be part of the Local Event Network, please email mfy@mfy.org.uk for further details. Local events can take place anytime between November and April.

WHAT IS A MASSED ENSEMBLE? Massed Ensembles are one of the cornerstones of the Music for Youth Proms, and involve around half of each night’s 1,000 young performers. At each evening of the Proms, a different Massed Ensemble represents a different region of the country and, following months of creative development and rehearsals, hundreds of young people from these regions perform in a once-in-a-lifetime, large scale performance on the world-famous Royal Albert Hall stage.

2018 MASSED ENSEMBLES We are delighted to introduce the regional massed ensemble performance projects that will be presented here at the Music for Youth Proms. The three partnerships whose projects were selected are Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Soundstorm Music Hub, Southampton Music Hub, Isle of Wight Music Hub, LeicesterShire Schools Music Service and Oxfordshire County Music Service. MASSED ENSEMBLES IN 2019 Music education providers and arts organisations are invited to submit Massed Ensemble Performance Project proposals for the MFY National Festival in July 2019, and for the MFY Prom concerts in November 2019. MASSED ENSEMBLE MONDAY 5 NOVEMBER
BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, SOUNDSTORM MUSIC HUB, SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC HUB, ISLE OF WIGHT MUSIC HUB Symphony 125 Composer: James Redwood Conductor: Frank Zielhorst
Symphony 125 was commissioned by SoundStorm Music Education Hub for its premiere in Poole (May 2018). Named in celebration of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s 125th Anniversary, Symphony 125 by composer James Redwood is designed to be performed by musicians from absolute beginner to professional, bringing together a huge number of musicians in one large ensemble. Over two days of workshops back in September 2017, James gathered riffs and melodies (and at times whole sections) from the young composers and then took the material away to stitch together into what became Symphony 125. The core themes were developed by students from Longfleet C of E Primary, Canford Heath Junior School, Jewell Academy, Bishop of Winchester Academy and Glenmoor & Winton Academies in Bournemouth and Poole, whose ideas have all been incorporated into the final work.

Listen out for the different ways that the numbers 1, 2 and 5 have been turned into music (as the basis of both rhythmic and melodic patterns). We hope that you also enjoy the two different 5/4 grooves as well as the pop classic that is Jewell and Glenmoor & Winton Academy’s ‘Musical Fireworks’ song. LEICESTER-SHIRE SCHOOLS MUSIC SERVICE Legend of the Sky; Mvt.1 Fly Beautiful Beast/Mvt.2 Kill the Griffin/Mvt.3 Breathe In Love Composer and Conductor: Fraser Trainer Head of Ensembles and Performance: Helen Fisher Singing Development Leaders: Nicola Atkins and Gillian Ramshaw Originally written to celebrate the music service’s 70th Birthday (2018), Legend of the Sky was a nine movement 50 minute epic that told the old folk tale of the arrival of a much feared Griffin (half Lion half eagle) to the tranquil and unassuming village of Griffydam. The griffin lands in the well scaring the villagers and stopping them from getting water so they plot to kill it. In the original story a knight shoots the griffin with an arrow, but in our version a courageous child speaks up and suggests helping the griffin out of the well to fly free. The story encompasses pertinent themes around community, fear of outsiders, tolerance and ultimately learning to live happily alongside others.

Through the Philharmonia, composer Fraser Trainer and Librettist Hazel Gould worked creatively with musicians, schools and singers incorporating the young people’s ideas and themes into the final piece. The group performing today is made up of 24 City and County primary, secondary and upper schools plus members of the Music Services’ Saturday ensembles. After rehearsing in smaller groups over the term tonight will see them all performing this huge collaborative piece on a grand scale giving them all a unique opportunity to perform in one of the UK’s most prestigious concert halls.

Musical direction, coaching and conducting were provided by Music Service staff and by Music Hub partner John Lubbock, OBE, who has extensively provided live professional music in Oxfordshire special schools for many years.

In Caelum Fero Karl Jenkins ‘Composition & film’ Composed by participating students and featuring on film, SEND students whose disabilities prevent them from attending This Is Me from ‘The Greatest Showman’ Benj Pasek & Justin Paul
British-born composer, Karl Jenkins’s In Caelum Fero from his Songs of the Sanctuary Suite, is a perfectly accessible piece. With infectious driving rhythms, memorable sequential melodies and a limited range of notes – it is perfect for SEND children to sing well. It is not just about participation, it is about accessing music and performing it to a high standard. The lyrics are not of any language - Jenkins made them up, they are gobbledegook! Perfect for all singers to be on a level playing field and to learn together!
There is so much great quality inclusive practice in this performance, it has already left an impression on performers as they have been rehearsing and composing together. Three composition workshops allowed all children to create musical ideas – melodic and rhythmic motifs built on the harmonic feature of This Is Me – the ‘sad’ B Minor passing into the ‘happy’ D Major. Whilst the composition is being played, you will see a film that features Oxfordshire children whose disabilities prevent them from attending the Royal Albert Hall.
Just about every child in tonight’s performance already knew the ‘power-anthem of the moment’ This Is Me from the hit film: The Greatest Showman, as schools across the county have adopted it for their concerts and assembly music. The lyrics deeply resonate a message of inclusion.

BIRMINGHAM AZAAD DHOL GROUP
Azaad Dhol group, founded in Birmingham 1996, is made up of versatile percussionists who are from a wide range of Birmingham city schools who have performed all over the country. The group perform traditional Punjabi folk beats which have been influenced by the youth of this generation. Their latest performances have included: Birmingham grand central (in front of thousands of people), 10k run. They are the only group with a mixture of male and female dhol players, who say they have gained confidence from engaging in performances. The Gwent Youth Wind Orchestra is managed by Gwent Music and made up from the most advanced wind and percussion players from across Blaenau Gwent, Newport, Monmouthshire and Torfaen. The group itself has been in existence for over 30 years and during its time has taken its members to performances in St David’s Hall, Southbank Centre, the Sage, Symphony Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and last year performed on the world reknowned stage in Carnegie Hall.
VOCALIZE
Vocalize is an urban/pop choir from Sedgehill School, South East London. Formed in 2010, they have since performed their take on modern classics at many of the UK’s top venues. Many of the 40 members are part of the school record label, XFADE RECORDS, where they write and record their own songs. Both Vocalize and XFADE Records can be found on Soundcloud.
Formed in response to the demand for a top quality jazz ensemble in Kirklees, award-winning Musica Youth Jazz is made up of musicians from across the five local music centres – Batley, Holme, Shelley, Colne and Mirfield – managed by Musica Kirklees. Demonstrating a range of music genres, from latin, rock and funk to classic swing, the group play to audiences at charity events and public concerts in and around the local area.

Rylands Health is made up of childhood friends, Jack Cowap and James Deacon. The duo, who have been playing music together since they were young, combine their sharp ear for melody and interesting harmonies with a wide range of musical influences to create snappy, genre-bending tunes. In recent years, Penzance Youth String Orchestra (PYSO) have become recognised as one of the principal performance groups in Cornwall. The group perform a wide range of repertoire, from Biber and Bach to the present day, as well as exhibiting many new works and arrangements for the first time. In the last 18 months PYSO have worked with the US folk/rock group Harpeth Rising, cellist Richard Lester, Jazz violinist Christian Garrick and members of the Budapest Cafe Orchestra, and the Dante String Quartet. Ealing Percussion Academy has been making music for four years. The academy has four groups from absolute beginners to the seniors and Ealing Percussion Academy Juniors is the first group the students join. The group is setup to encourage confidence and fun in playing percussion instruments before moving on to more challenging repertoire. KINGDOM
Kingdom is a young ensemble that writes and performs original music about growing up today in Croydon. The styles have a range of influences, from South London genres (including Grime) to American Hip Hop and pop. In addition to the quality of music, the group places significant emphasis on lyrical content. The group have been writing and performing together for just over a year, including performances at Disneyland Paris, Wembley Arena and alongside Arcade Fire on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge.
CENTRE FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS STRING QUARTET
The Centre for Young Musicians (CYM) in London provides specialist instrumental and vocal training to over 400 children. The CYM String Quartet is one of numerous Saturday ensembles hosted by the Centre. They have been working with violinist Jack Robinson as part of his composition studies at CYM. Based in Birmingham, Recorder Sinfonia is part of the network of ensembles run by Services for Education. The group plays on a full consort of instruments, ranging from the Sopranino to the Contrabass, which helps them to explore a huge wealth of music spanning many centuries. They aim to demonstrate the versatility of the recorder, showcasing it’s flexible and unique sound, whilst presenting it as an exciting instrument in its own right. All players play multiple recorders and swap as required by the music.

Cumann Ceoil Naomh Mhuire, from Northern Ireland, is a group of 19 musicians, vocalists and dancers. SWAY
SWAY are an Indie Rock band from Glasgow. Boasting an eclectic sound typified by their two distinct lead vocalists, they have drawn comparisons to The Cure, Joy Division, The Jesus & Mary Chain, DIIV, Dinosaur Jr, and The Smiths. In 2018 the band took to Inverness for the city’s Xpo North festival along with playing jam-packed sets in Glasgow’s St Lukes All-Dayer and Stag & Dagger festivals. Kingsdale Foundation School Steelband are the champions of Classorama, in 2014, 2015, and 2017, an annual school steelband competition organised by Steel Pan. Previously, they have performed at the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Dulwich College Founders Day. Tonight, they will be performing an arrangement of one of Stevie Wonder’s most famous hits, Sir Duke. After Duke Ellington died in 1974, Wonder wanted to write a song acknowledging musicians that he felt important. This trio of young Scottish singer-songwriters are already paving a bright future ahead. Rosie, from the Isle of Lewis, was young songwriter of the year in a national competition and has already released two EPs. Age-otori is a 16 year-old Glaswegian singer-songwriter and avid pianist and is currently recording his first EP, to be released early 2019. 19 year-old Millie has supported artists including Be Charlotte, and Sam Brookes and performed live on BBC Radio’s Janice Forsyth show.

Fighter of the Nightman are a 4-piece band from Lewes, made up of guitar, bass, synth vocals and drums. The band met in September 2017 through the East Sussex Academy of Music where their bespoke course allowed them to expand and develop their ensemble skills in an independent way. Now, they are working together to create new and original music and have started performing their music at various events, including at Spring Live 2018, South of England Showground. The Arnold Quintet is a group that has traditionally been comprised of the five principal players in the Northamptonshire County Youth Orchestra. As a result the makeup of the group changes constantly every September as players move on to University or Music College. Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion is a youth choir from Castellnewydd Emlyn, West Wales. The singers have developed through the ranks of the choir honing their performing skills in concerts, competitions and eisteddfodau, a Welsh festival of music, literature and performance. Tonight’s ensemble recently formed as a close harmony vocal group to perform more specialised a cappella repertoire from pop and jazz to folk and barbershop. STONELEIGH YOUTH ORCHESTRA
Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2019/20, Wimbledon-based Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra is one of the UK’s oldest youth orchestras. The two orchestras comprise over 160 players, drawn from 80 schools across London and Surrey. Both orchestras rehearse weekly, and perform three concerts a year in and around London. SYO undertakes an annual summer tour to Europe and runs regular, free one-day workshops, to enable guest players to join regular members.
