Welcome to MusicFest Vancouver August 10 – 19, 2012 “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” Bob Marley Music hit me early on. It has the power to express both joy and pain, but it can also console and heal. I may have learned this as a treble chorister, or as a budding band member. By the time I entered university, I knew that a music career was in my future, in a role that could reach out to a wider audience. I’ve been fortunate to work as a programmer and producer with CBC Radio for more than thirty years, and now have joined the team of dedicated music enthusiasts that present MusicFest Vancouver. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to what promises to be another wide-ranging and entertaining 10 days of concerts. You’ll notice a bit of a Brazilian theme in the year. You can celebrate one of the most universal and versatile of instruments, the guitar, and be introduced to two fabulous new MusicFest Vancouver venues: Pyatt Hall and the Orpheum Annex. You can also mark some significant musical anniversaries: the 150th of Debussy’s birth, an organ centenary, and 75 years since Gershwin’s death. A world of music awaits you. Music and lyrics by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin Here to Stay: The Gershwin Experience launches MusicFest Vancouver with the Canadian premiere of a multimedia concert event at the historic Orpheum Theatre that celebrates one of the greatest teams of collaborators in the history of American music.

Our guide for this glittering evening is the renowned pianist and Gershwin interpreter Kevin Cole. The brilliant singer Sylvia McNair, vocalist/tap sensation Ryan VanDenBoom, and our own Grammy Award-winning Vancouver Symphony Orchestra led by guest conductor Leslie Dala, join together for this unique and entertaining insight into the legendary duo, George and Ira Gershwin. Gershwin family photos, rare video clips, and elegant, visual elements provide a distinctive and unique experience, plus there will be an unforgettable offering of the Gershwin brothers’ best. Gabrieli’s Venice: A Polychoral Vespers Alexander Weimann music director Les Voix Baroques and La Rose des Vents Giovanni Gabrieli’s sonorous compositions for separated choirs, strings, and brass greatly influenced the development of western classical music. Now Montréal’s Les Voix Baroques and La Rose des Vents have created a compelling homage to the composer: a Marian Vespers rooted in the polychoral traditions of Venice. Casavant Frères: 100 Years of Good Vibrations Self-described “organblaster” Michael Dirk showcases the mighty Casavant Frères Opus 485 pipe organ in a lighthearted performance to mark its centenary. Exactly 100 years ago – August 11, 1912 – the doors of Chalmers Presbyterian Church (now Holy Trinity) opened at the corner of Hemlock and 12th, and the first chords resounded from the 2,271 pipes of this historic instrument. This celebratory concert includes works by J.S. Bach, a tribute to Virgil Fox’s “Heavy Organ” tours from the ‘70’s, Healey Willan’s magnum opus Introduction, Passacaglia and Fugue, Denis Bedard’s Variations on “Old Hundredth” – plus improvisations to a Laurel & Hardy silent movie, complete with popcorn for the audience! The Swiss Piano Trio is one of the most acclaimed chamber ensembles of its generation. MusicFest Vancouver is pleased to welcome these three outstanding musicians to their final stop in a cross-Canada tour, following performances for Ottawa’s Chamberfest and Parry Sound’s Festival of the Sound. Pianist Martin Lucas Staub, violinist Angela Golubeva and cellist Sébastien Singer have chosen a playful work by Mozart to begin their program before introducing Vancouver audiences to two Swiss composers. Rudolf Kelterborn’s Moments Musicaux are brief and witty pieces written in 2006, while Paul Juon’s neo-Romantic tone poem Litaniae, Op.70 dates from 1920. The sweeping romanticism of Brahms’ Piano Trio No.2 in C Major closes the concert in grand style. Legends: The Whitening of the Ox & The Firebird TYLER DUNCAN

MusicFest Vancouver is proud to present the Turning Point Ensemble in Legends, a performance that incorporates multi-media components in a compelling musical response to works of the past. Jeffrey Ryan’s recent commission is based on The Whitening of the Ox (Inside the Zen Ox Pictures) by Canadian poet K.V. Skene. This extended vocal/instrumental work incorporates 15th-century illustrations by Tensho Shubun of a Chinese fable, and features Canadian baritone Tyler Duncan. Just as an Oxherd domesticates a beast, the series depicts the Zen Buddhist concept representing the taming of the disordered mind and the ultimate attainment of enlightenment. Stravinsky’s landmark ballet score The Firebird undergoes a metamorphosis at the hand of BC composer Michael Bushnell (from TPE’s Rio Tinto Alcan Performing Arts Award winning production). It is inspired by a Russian legend about the adventures of young prince Ivan and his search for the most beautiful bird in the world: The Firebird. Series sponsor

A sensual mixture of Brazilian rhythms, American jazz and Portuguese lyrics, Bossa Nova became an international sensation, and Stan Getz’s 1964 recording of The Girl from Ipanema with João & Astrud Gilberto spent 96 weeks on the US charts! At home in both popular and classical music, Cristina Braga is principal harpist with the Rio de Janeiro Symphony and has worked as a soloist with many ensembles. Bergmann Piano Duo & Gamelan Si Pawit: Ancient Cultures New Sounds In the 1930s, the Montreal-born composer Colin McPhee fell in love with the music of Bali. His passion led him to remain there for several years, studying the music and composing. The piano duo (and musical couple) of Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann explore some of the Balinese music that McPhee transcribed for two pianos decades before “world music” became widespread. They’ll also present music of similar inspiration, and team up with Vancouver Community College’s Gamelan Si Pawit, for a work that juxtaposes gongs with Glenn Gould and the Goldberg Variations! The entrancing sounds of tuned metallophones, drums, gongs and xylophones that make up the Sundanese gamelan will also resound in a travelogue of new sonic destinations. “[The Bergmanns]…play as one pianist with a supernatural sense of ensemble. Alan and Gwendoline Pyatt Hall is housed in the VSO School of Music (843 Seymour), Western Canada’s newest music school, where students of all ages and abilities can enjoy lifelong learning in unique engagement with the musicians and guest artists of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. The Hall is a warm and inviting 120-seat space with convenient access to the school’s many amenities. The state-of-the-art School combines unique learning opportunities with the benefits of 21st Century technology and acoustics. Pyatt Hall’s acoustics are clear and detailed, warm and welcoming – ideal for the subtleties of a classical recital. A few doors north of the School (and the new Capitol Residences building) lies the entrance to the Orpheum Annex (823 Seymour). Tucked up on the 2nd floor, the lobby looks over Seymour Street. Gryphon Trio with Patricia O’Callaghan: Broken Hearts & Madmen The Gryphon Trio teams up with vocalist Patricia O’Callaghan (hailed by Billboard as “the most promising cabaret performer of her generation”) to present their genre-stretching concert of songs and tangos from the Americas. O’Callaghan trained as an opera singer but was soon drawn to the music of Leonard Cohen and Kurt Weill. A multilingual performer who has recorded everything from Erik Satie to Bob Dylan, O’Callaghan fell in love with Hispanic music while living in Mexico as a teenager. The engaging program for Broken Hearts & Madmen includes songs by Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Lhasa de Sela, Laurie Anderson, Elvis Costello, Astor Piazzolla and more, and showcases the Gryphon Trio at its adventurous and groundbreaking best. A Bohemian rhapsody of romantic Czech music awaits you. Bedr˘ ich Smetana and Antonin Dvor˘ák were the musical father figures who gave voice to the folk music of their native country in the Romantic era. Smetana is best known for his set of picturesque tone poems Má Vlast (“My country”). The heartfelt Piano Trio in G minor was without question Smetana’s first great masterpiece, and was much admired by Franz Liszt. In the 1860s, Smetana was also the director of the theatre orchestra in which the younger Antonin Dvor˘ák dabbled as a violist. Thirty years later, Dvor˘ák was an international celebrity, being wooed to teach in America. Before departing his homeland, he gave a forty-concert tour that featured his colourful Dumky Piano Trio, filled with “fleeting thoughts” of Czech folk songs and dances. Series sponsor

Donna Brown & Philippe Cassard: Ariettes oubliées Forgotten songs to fête Debussy’s 150th As an interpreter of Debussy’s work, French pianist Philippe Cassard has impeccable credentials, having recorded the composer’s complete piano works. He has also frequently partnered with singers such as Natalie Dessay, Stéphanie d’Oustrac and Canada’s own Donna Brown in recitals of French repertoire. MusicFest Vancouver reunites these deux bons amis in a recital of Debussy’s much admired settings of French texts. Debussy pushed back from being labeled “an impressionist” in music, and more clearly identified with the work of “symbolist” poets such as Paul Verlaine, Stéphane Mallarmé and Charles Baudelaire. From the time of its founding in 2005, Carpe Diem has won critical praise for its mastery of the classical chamber music canon, as well as its ability to expand upon the traditional string music repertoire. The group showcases works inspired by both rural and urban settings, including Dvor˘ák’s muchloved American string quartet. It was written during Dvor˘ák’s summer vacation in Spillville, Iowa, home to a community of Czech immigrants. Carpe Diem’s founding violist, Korine Fujiwara, is also a gifted composer and arranger. Raised amid the majestic scenery of Big Sky country, her Fiddle Suite: Montana depicts five favorite scenic spots in a work about family and tradition. Serving as a contrast will be music of George Gershwin and Duke Ellington, stretching from New York City’s Tin Pan Alley and Harlem to the hustle of Hollywood.

How Ticket Prices Work Ticket prices can sometimes be confusing, especially in this day and age of additional fees. At MusicFest Vancouver, we do our best to make our ticket prices as simple as possible. That’s why when you look in our Festival Guide or on our website, you’ll find the prices are what you actually pay when you purchase tickets in person. No extra fees. No surprises.

The price you see includes HST, venue fees and ticket outlet service charges. For example, from an advertised ticket price of $49, MusicFest Vancouver takes home $37.72. That’s $11.28 we integrate into the price so you don’t get that unpleasant surprise when you go to pay for your tickets. Please note: When you order tickets from Tickets Tonight by phone, Tickets Tonight adds a per order fee of around $5.00. Again, this fee is once per order, not per ticket, so we couldn’t build it into our listed ticket prices. Additionally, if you’d like your tickets to be mailed to you, there will be an additional charge of $3. This charge is once per order as well.
