Parco Archeologico “Falerio Picenus” Falerone Anfiteatro

Situated about 2 km downstream from the present hilltop town of Falerone, in Piane di Falerone, the Archaeological Park is located on the fluvial terrace on the left of the river Tenna, chosen by the Romans as the place of Falerio Picenus, an important Roman town in the middle valley of the Tenna river. The area, which partly retains territorial Roman planning, is developed on about 30 hectares near the provincial road and includes the remains of the monumental theatre, the amphitheatre, the aqueduct and the remains of other public and private buildings. The theatre, located at the eastern end of the ancient urban plan is one of the best preserved Roman theatre buildings of the Marche although plundered in its decoration, it shows an estimated capacity of 1600 seats. The first two orders of the cavea, the orchestra, the two side entrances, the proscenium and what remains of the scene prospect can still be admired of the once monumental building, which can be dated back to the Augustan age. Only some sections of the perimeter wall are visible of the amphitheatre, located in the western part of the ancient town, enough however to recognize the colossal structure, which could hold up to about 5000 spectators. Along the Northern stretch of the ancient cardo, outlined by the present day Via del Pozzo, the ruins of the aqueduct are still visible, commonly called the “the Baths of the Queen”, a trapezoidal structure divided into three pools, used for the distribution of water. Much of the rich archaeological documentation recovered from the excavations of Falerio is part of the civic collections of the “Pompilio Bonvicini” Archaeological Museum, a visit to this, would enable a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural importance of the ancient town.
