nnouncing that either one of these two names have joined us at MuscleSport Magazine would have been cool enough, but adding both in one issue has us chomping at the bit to see the public reaction to Rich Piana and Denise Masino coming on board. Our line-up was already stacked but now having these two goliaths in the fold will be the catalyst of our vision all along – to put us into the next level. Collectively, our All-Star cast of writers is by far the best in the industry and we say that with no bullshit or hesitation. The industry has changed Joe Pietaro has been a writer and having IFBB pros collecting paychecks while others ghostwrite their and editor in the sports and columns has become a thing of the past. AND WHEN IT WAS LUNCH TIME, WE ALL GOT A BOLOGNA SANDWICH. OH, YUM…NOT!!!! AND, YO, THAT NASTY FAKE-ASS BOLOGNA SHIT SANDWICH WAS ON SOME SORT OF DRY ASS WHOLE WHEAT BREAD THAT TASTED LIKE SAW DUST. THEN, WHEN I WAS DONE, I ASKED ONE OF MY CELLMATES FOR A SANDWICH THAT WAS THROWN ON THE FLOOR BY AN UNHUNGRY FELLOW CONVICT. I PROUDLY TOOK THE BOLOGNA OFF AND ATE IT AND THEN WIPED MY ASS WITH THE WHOLE WHEAT BREAD >>>BOTH SLICES. YES, I ADMIT, AT FIRST THE BREAD WAS A LITTLE SCRATCHY ON MY ASS. BUT AT THE SAME TI\ME THAT HELPED CLEAN ME UP A LITTLE BETTER THAN IF I WOULD HAVE USED WHITE BREAD!!! YES IT’S TRUE! I TOOK A SHIT IN JAIL AND WIPED MY ASS WITH A BOLOGNA SANDWICH!!! A

rnold Schwarzenegger is the one figure in the sport of bodybuilding that is known outside of its inner circle and is still heavily involved in it. He brought The Iron Game into the mainstream back in the 1970s and is still doing so much for it, so for anyone to speak negatively about Schwarzenegger is downright disrespectful. When the likes of Jay Cutler, Bob Cicherillo and especially Phil Heath say what they did, it shows what type of character they all have. That trio has taken shots at Arnold since he once again spoke up about the size of the competitor’s waistlines, but this time added direct criticism of the judges and – most importantly – Jim Manion by name. So it seems as if they have gone on the offensive against Schwarzenegger in defense of the IFBB president. They are all being Manion puppets and saying what they know he would want to hear. Even when this was first brought up at the Arnold Classic seminar, Cicherillo could have spoken about it more (being the emcee and seated next to Schwarzenegger), but instead quickly changed the topic. These guys are simply ass kissers and do not have the balls to take a stand and say that what Schwarzenegger said is true. No, they might upset Manion and in doing so, upset their placings and/or chances to earn more money. What have these guys accomplished in this sport compared to Schwarzenegger? Nothing; they are not even the shit on the bottom of his shoes! I had the pleasure of training at World Gym with Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno and all the greats from that era. Sitting in the office with Schwarzenegger and Joe Gold talking about the good old days is something that I fondly recall and will always treasure. This man deserves to be honored, not spoken about in the fashion that he has been by these individuals.

NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS VS. NEW YORK PRO Another bone that I have to pick with Cicherillo concerns what he said regarding the original Night of Champions and how it wasn’t as great as some people make it out to be, adding that the venue was antiquated, as well. Besides that, Cicherillo feels that the current version of the show – the New York Pro – is a better one all around and that even includes the venues (a college in New York City and this past May at a hotel in New Jersey). Once again, he is being a company man. Sure, the Beacon Theater was older, but it was a great place to hold a show and was in the heart of the Big Apple. And it included a line-up of more than 40 big name competitors. Back then, the Mr. Olympia, Arnold Classic and Night of Champions were the top three shows on the IFBB annual calendar. I’m not knocking the guys who compete in the New York Pro now, but it is a sub-par line-up for the most part and not deep at all. And by the looks of the photographs from the most recent show, the venue was total shit. But why even listen to Cicherillo when we know who butters his bread? WWW.PRIESTATHLETICS.COM

IFBB PROS AND SOCIAL MEDIA It used to be only the stage, magazines or VHS/DVD platforms for pro bodybuilders to get their message across to the fans. But social media has given us a direct way to not only market ourselves, but also personally interact with others. Every fan wants to know what the top pros do – how they train, eat, live, etc. and in order to take advantage of this, they have to offer the fans some personal insight. But the problem with that is that there is no privacy left in the world and you get these pussy boii trolls that sit behind their computers (or phones, which are even more common nowadays) talking shit to bodybuilders as if they were in any position to do so. These guys haven’t even reached fuckin’ puberty yet! I see so many bodybuilders put up with this and that shocks me. If someone comes to my page talking crap, I will expose that piece of shit to everyone. How fuckin’ dare you come to my page and talk like a wanna-be gangsta? I have no room

for these type of ‘followers.’ Just because you see someone with over a million followers doesn’t mean that they are all there for something positive. I’d rather just have the ones who are really there to be inspired and are willing to respect your hustle. And the biggest thing is to just be yourself. Too many bodybuilders are fuckin’ fake and are not good actors. I will call it like I see it and not sugarcoat anything – my name isn’t Willy Wonka. And, of course, I understand that the guys on top have to be more reserved as you have the eyes of all the big fish on you. So you have to tread carefully and be more diplomatic as to not upset anyone.

Both my parents were not only bodybuilders, but also top-level competitors, as well as owning one of the best bodybuilding gyms in the San Fernando Valley (Gold’s Gym in Northridge). We had bodybuilders over the house daily for posing practice and my dad ran a nutrition clinic on the VHFRQG à RRU RI WKH J\P 6R , ZDV ERUQ DQG UDLVHG DQG DOVR exposed to all of this from birth and it became a way of living and life for me. Unfortunately, this all went downhill once my parents divorced. At the current time I was young and didn’t know what was going on but it had a huge impact on me. I went into a depression and hated everything to do with the gym, eating junk food non-stop and getting very fat to the point where I had marbled fat on my legs and ass, as

After three-to-four months of pinning DQG IHHOLQJ OLNH D SLQFXVKLRQ we were both happy to take WLPH RII 2I FRXUVH %RVWLQ SLQV way more and more often than P\VHOI EXW ZH FDQ ERWK DJUHH WKDW WLPH RII EHWZHHQ F\FOHV LV a must. And more importantly, it is key for females. The feeling on steroids is amazing. You don’t get as sore, your recovery is better, you’re stronger, you feel full and hard all the time, your body fat is lower and you see results faster. Yes, I know. Who would ever want to come off, right? I know of too many females who don’t come off of their cycle because they’re too insecure and are too afraid of getting softer and putting on more body fat. But what they need to realize is that if they want any longevity in the sport of bodybuilding, they NEED to cycle off. What I mean by that is one’s health. Taking drugs for too long can severely mess with a women’s reproductive systems, hormonal imbalances, give her

irreversible side affects like hair loss, hair growth in areas where it wasn’t before, acne, voice deepening, changes in the structure of her face and clit growth. Those side affects alone should be enough to convince any female to take time off. So do your body a favor, give your liver, heart and kidneys some rest and take some time off. We often forget that our organs are responsible for everything that we put in our bodies. We bodybuilders watch what we eat and what we put into our bodies. Ironically, we forget that steroids fall into that category of things that we put into our bodies. When women take steroids, they

will most likely miss their period. The absence of a woman’s period can last anywhere from a few months to over a year. That all depends on how much she is taking, what drugs she is taking and whether or not she has had enough time off in between cycles.

So do your body a favor, give your liver, heart and kidneys some rest and take some time off.

Things to keep in mind

ZKHQ FRPLQJ RII RI JHDU 1 - It is a necessary and healthy choice. 2 - A lot of your physique is what you eat, so as long as you stay

on a regimented diet plan, then you will not have any rebound after coming off. 3 - You will respond better once you take steroids again after a good three-plus months off. 4 - Keep training. Don’t let being off gear demotivate you. It is only temporary. 5 - Add cardio in to keep your metabolism going. 6 - Add in some natural supplements. It doesn’t hurt to take a liver support, a multivitamin and other great natural products like turmeric, omega-3s, GLA, digestive enzymes, etc. These VXSSOHPHQWV FRPH ZLWK D KXJH YDULHW\ RI EHQHÀWV DQG FDQ make you have more energy and recover faster while being off cycle. 7 - Make sure you are getting enough sleep and drinking enough water.

“I didn’t want to face my dad,” Rich Piana, 44, recalled from that night when he was 18 years of age and competing in a show that he was expected to win, but ended up out of WKH WRS ÀYH ´, ZDV GHYDVWDWHG , IHOW awful. And when I reached his seat, he asked me when I was going to perform my posing routine. I didn’t know how to tell him but I had to – I didn’t make the cut and wouldn’t be doing my routine.” Piana went home and stayed up all night contemplating what went wrong and what he needed to do to never feel that way again. “I had to make a choice and do whatever it took,” he explained. “I had to redeem myself.”

That meant doing something that was risky on a few different fronts. “I drove to Tijuana, Mexico and bought steroids,” admits Piana, who had no idea what to ask or look for. He walked into a storefront, asked for steroids and the proprietor began showing him different bottles. “He’s Spanish, doesn’t speak English and never worked out a day in his life and I’m going to take his advice on what kind of drug to put in my body… and that’s what I did.” Getting across the border was another hurdle for the teenager now that he had his cache of gear. His car went through a rudimentary search, but lucky for him, the steroids were not discovered. Piana made it home safely but still was in a quandary. “I’m sitting there looking at a syringe and bottles,” he described. “I didn’t know how to draw it, how much to put in or how or where to shoot it. They didn’t have the Internet back in those GD\V RU ERRNV DERXW LW 6R , ÀOOHG XS WKH needle and put it in my shoulder – the last shot that I received from the doctor went there.” Putting on approximately 28 pounds of muscle in three months, Piana went on to win his next show and fared well after that competing. But he later came to the realization that he was on a road

to devastation if he continued on the same path. “I had to get out of bodybuilding and the reason being is that I would have fuckin’ killed myself,” he says matterof-factly. “When I was competing, I put everything else on hold. I didn’t give a shit about my job, my girlfriend, my family…whatever was going on in my life. I only cared about that trophy. “I still am taking steroids, but it’s maybe 10 percent of what it was when I was competing,” he continues. “I’m a lot smarter now and have learned a lot. More isn’t necessarily better, but back in the day – more weight, more food,

more sleep and more drugs. There were a lot of things that I was doing that I didn’t need to do. It was overkill.”

Some people have an epiphany that causes them to take a different route in life. But when it came to Piana, it wasn’t anything that he can pinpoint that made him stop competing and concentrate on a business plan.

“I guess that I had (an epiphany) for 15 years,â€? he says with a laugh. “You know it’s not the best path but keep doing it. If you win, you want to win again. If you lose, you want to redeem yourself. Going after that trophy is like an addiction and once I stopped chasing (them), my entire life changed.â€? Any bodybuilder will tell you that they put more than anything into competing. So Piana did what seems like the obvious choice and merely made a lateral change, keeping the same focus but using it in more important areas of life. “If you use that same effort into other aspects like running a business and becoming a success, you can get a lot more done,â€? he remarks. “It’s just stupid‌doing all of that (competing) for nothing. Guys will do it for 20 years and have a whole list of accomplishments WKDW GRQŇ‹W PHDQ VKLW , GLG P\ Ă€UVW competition when I was 15 years old; I care more about longevity now.â€? Starting off with his 1 Day U May apparel line, Piana exploded onto the scene as an entrepreneur and eventually launched his 5 Percent Nutrition company. I

n the last few years I have been fortunate enough to be traveling to all the big expos like the Olympia, Arnold and PDQ\ RWKHU VHPL ORFDO VKRZV WKDW result in a few days trip to attend. Along with a yearly traditional trip WR 0H[LFR LQ WKH FROGHU PRQWKV WR break up the winter, I have had to learn to eat on the go and on the road. It’s been a hard transition at Ă€UVW EXW RYHU WLPH , OHDUQHG WKHVH OLWWOH ´ERG\EXLOGLQJ WUDYHO KDFNV Âľ

The last time I went to Mexico, I decided I was not only going to maintain my really lean condition, but I was also going to get LEANER and look BETTER when I got home after a week away. Well, training is a must. Get my regular workouts in and cardio daily, but the DIET was the main thing I had to get in check. One thing I learned over time was that supplements save my ass a lot. Protein powders, meal replacements and protein bars, but which ones? Whatever meets your needs, I say. I bring a shaker bottle in my backpack to travel and keep one-to-two servings of powder in a Ziploc bag in there and ready. Also I keep two bars in there, as well. The rest gets packed in my carry-on or checked suitcase. And for a week, that includes the following: PHOTOS COURTESY OF JERRY WARD

*Two bars per day =14 bars and I bring two extra *Two servings of protein powder a day (two scoops each), 28 servings of powder This comprises four meals per day for me and I eat two-to-three food meals at a restaurant, at the buffet or wherever. And when I get there, I look for the cleanest things I can get. Fish, chicken, turkey, eggs and egg whites, veggies, white rice, potatoes, etc. Anything can be ordered to suit your needs at any restaurant; just ask. The fact that the supplements are so “clean,� it makes it okay if the restaurant

food is a little less than perfect; it all evens out at the end of the day. Most places have “healthyâ€?choices, but all places can make special orders if you ask nicely. Other things I also include while traveling are beef jerky, ostrim snacks, Quest chips, plain almonds, and walnuts and always have a bottle of water on you, too. Many times thirst is mistaken for hunger and it’s easy to dehydrate on a trip. When on a day trip like an expo all day or an excursion on vacation, take a protein bar (I use Quest bars) and put two of them in my cargo pockets of my shorts. I always have my meal ready like this in case there is nothing I can eat when I want to eat. A bottle of water and that bar will hold me RYHU MXVW Ă€QH IRU D OLWWOH ZKLOH A good thing about using so many supplements is that is usually results LQ D FDORULH GHĂ€FLW ZKLFK PHDQV LI you opt to eat two instead of three meals of actual food that day, both meals can be a little more “vacation friendlyâ€? and not have to be a strict macro nutrient-wise. It’s a throwback to the old EAS Myoplex diets where you have three supplement shakes, a bar and then a meal of whatever you want - within reason, which works well on vacations. If it’s a road trip, you can literally stop at any fast food place along the way and get the RIGHT thing to eat

there. Chicken salad, light dressing or even get the grilled chicken sandwich and not have the mayo on it. Doing the right thing is what it is all about here. We all know what we SHOULD eat at the junk food places, but usually justify eating shit or just saying ‘fuck it; I don’t care’ and then getting a little fatter and being pissed about it. I’ve been there many times. Well, there you have it. How I eat

Big Dave, I have read that Dianabol and Equipoise are chemically identical. The only difference is that Dianabol is simply orally activated. So why is it that I see injectable Dianabol? Wouldn’t that just be Equipoise? And now I have heard of an oral version of Equipoise called Boldabol; wouldn’t that just be Dianabol?

With regard to GH injections, for women, I recommend taking a single ,8 GRVH ÀUVW WKLQJ LQ WKH PRUQLQJ 7KH edema or water retention that occurs with daily GH shots can usually be controlled with a low carbohydrate diet; however, some individuals do notice tremendous tissue swelling while on GH. When it’s muscular swelling, it creates a full, skin stretching, look. When it’s fat or the internal organs that swell, it creates an awkward, unaesthetic, appearance that, especially in a woman, doesn’t bode well with the judges. As for Cytomel (T3), I suggest using it for contest preparation only. Usual dosages start out at around 25mcg/day and work up to around 75mcg/day. Thyroid hormone, like any other endocrine hormone, works on a negative feedback loop. When an exogenous source of T3 (Cytomel) is taken, the body slows downs the production of the pituitary hormone TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). This decrease in TSH slows production of thyroxin (T4) from the thyroid gland. However, once the Cytomel is discontinued, the pituitary gland will once again start producing TSH, which will then stimulate normal levels

ANSWER: One of the more classic examples of Urban Bodybuilding Legends or, as NPC District Bodybuilding Chairman Steve Weinberger likes to call it, “voodoo bodybuilding,â€? occurred while backstage at a local New York bodybuilding contest back in the 1990s. I was waiting in the pump-up room for my weight class to be called when all of a sudden I smelled this terribly offensive odor. Everyone in the room must have noticed it because the smell was so horrible that people were actually getting nauseous and light-headed. In fact, the scent was so pungent that it made the usual backstage smorgasbord of Pro-Tan, Hot Stuff spray and posing oil smell like some exotic cologne factory. As I swayed back and forth, fading in and out of consciousness, I turned and smelled the culprit. Once pinpointed DQG LGHQWLĂ€HG , FDXWLRXVO\ DVNHG KLP LI I could give him a few words of advice. Confused, the competitor asked me if there was anything wrong with the way he looked. I assured him that his conditioning LQ P\ HVWLPDWLRQ ZDV JUHDW IRU KLV Ă€UVW bodybuilding competition. The problem, I insisted, was, “you smell horrible.â€? +H FRQĂ€GHG LQ PH WKDW KH KDGQŇ‹W showered for over a week because “someone at the gymâ€? (99% of all idiotic

advice seems to come from this hotbed of wisdom) told him that exposing the skin to water in the week prior to a contest could result in water retention. Not wanting to appear “smooth� onstage, he tried as hard as possible to stay clear of water (he hadn’t even had anything to drink in the previous two days). Unfortunately for us bodybuilders, he did a very good job of sticking to his water-free strategy.

QUESTION: I am a 26-year-old 5’8â€? female at about 150 pounds. I am trying to tone up and lean out but am stuck at this current weight. I am strength training for an hour four days a week and trying to do cardio IRU DW OHDVW PLQXWHV Ă€YH GD\V D ZHHN , KDYH WULHG WKH FUD]LHVW WKLQJV 0\ Ă€DQFp is so frustrated because I am the only person that he can’t help. I was eating six times a day (1200 calories); 40-60g carbs, 15-20g protein and no fat. I made no progress. He had me go down to 1000 calories; still no results. To top it off, I’m not even hungry when it’s “eating time.â€? Now I only eat about 600-800 calories a day because I don’t get hungry. I am taking one ephedrine in the morning and one early afternoon. I bob up and down between 147 and 151 pounds. If you didn’t know me, you’d probably think I was lying. I should be about 90 pounds at this point, but I’m not. I recently went to the doctor to have my hormone levels checked and he said that my TSH and WK\UR[LQ 7 OHYHOV DUH Ă€QH He did mention that my T3 levels were normal, but on the low side. Maybe I’m not human! Please help.

ANSWER: :KHQ \RX Ă€UVW VWDUWHG your “dietâ€? regimen, you were consuming way too many carbohydrates, too little protein and no essential fatty acids. No wonder you weren’t making any progress! When you cut your intake down to 600-800 calories

per day, you were eating way too little food (and probably the wrong composition of calories). This severe dietary restriction on your part caused your body to panic and think that it was in some sort of state of starvation. In response, it slowed down your metabolic rate by decreasing the rate of conversion of the inactive thyroid hormone (T4) into the active thyroid metabolite 7 7KLV IDFW LV HDVLO\ FRQĂ€UPHG E\ your reported thyroid function test (TFT). Additionally, I suspect that the reason your appetite has been in the metabolic “toilet’ is that you’re taking ephedrine twice a day. In addition to promoting fat loss, it also acts as a central nervous system stimulant and appetite suppressant. What’s the solution to your problem, you ask? First of all, I would suggest HDWLQJ Ă€YH VPDOO PHDOV SHU GD\ VSDFLQJ them every three-to-four hours). One more thing - try to avoid taking stimulant-based fat burners since not only do they raise heart rate and blood pressure, they also stress out the body and cause excessive Cortisol release which, in the long run, will cause you to lose lean muscle and thus reduce your metabolic rate.
