Bret Campbell joined MSU as director of basketball operations last summer. He is no stranger to the Racers and the OVC after leading the program at UT Martin as head coach for the last 10 seasons. Campbell is a 17-year veteran of the OVC having been the head coach at UTM from 1999 to 2009 and at Austin Peay as an assistant from 1992-99. Last season, he led the Skyhawks to a school record 22 wins and their first regular-season championship and was named OVC Coach of the Year. “Bret has a wealth of experience as a head coach in our league,” MSU head coach Billy Kennedy said. “His character and integrity will enhance our program in many areas.” Campbell was an assistant coach at Central Florida (1989-92), Birmingham Southern (1987-89), Kennesaw State (1985-87) and his alma mater, Valdosta State (1983-85). He and his wife, Marcia, have three children, daughter Caitlin, 15, and sons Cannon, 12, and Carter, 10.

2nd SEASON

Marcus Smith is in his second season with MSU Basketball as graduate assistant manager. Smith earned a degree in business management from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2004 and is pursuing a master’s degree in human development with emphasis in guidance counseling at Murray State. A native of Jackson, Miss., Smith was recruited by and played for Billy Kennedy at Southeastern Louisiana from 2001-03. “Marcus has been a big help to our program,” MSU head coach Billy Kennedy said. “His relationship with our student-athletes and his experience as a player has helped us on the court and off it.” Smith played professionally for the Southern Crescent Lightning of the World Basketball Association in 2004 where his team won the inaugural championship. In 2005, he played for the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association. He has also served as a personal trainer for bball101.com, an elite basketball training group in Atlanta, Ga. Smith served as a teacher at Creekside and Tri-Cities High School where he was an assistant coach with the boys varsity program.
