Mahogany Brown Bridal Inspires Muna Coterie Collaboration TEXT BY LINDA WALLENTINE

Whitney Stephenson of Mahogany Brown Bridal is Altering the Seams of the Bridal Market, Creating Space for Minority-Owned Brands and Designers One Dress at a Time.

Ever since meeting her husband, he has been her biggest supporter. “He helps me with designs, cutting, and sewing,” she shares. “He is my backbone.”

For too long, minority-owned brands have been under-represented in the bridal market. Fashion Designer and Owner of Mahogany Brown Bridal, Whitney Stephenson, is on a mission to change that.

The couple have 4 beautiful children together. However, the birth of their son, Phoenix, would ultimately lead Whitney down the path of fashion.

Whitney’s story begins in Cincinnati, Ohio.

On Christmas Day in 2015, baby Phoenix arrived 3 months early at only 28 weeks gestation. Endearingly calling him her “miracle baby,” “Christmas joy," and “surprise,” Phoenix experienced multiple medical complications after birth which sent him to the NICU.

The eldest of four sisters and one brother, she grew up in a loving family with unconditional support in everything she did. Her determination shown as a business owner today stems from her upbringing and discipline acquired as an all-around athlete in high school where she played basketball, volleyball, and track. “My main sport was basketball,” she shares. “Every summer I played AAU. We won State Championships and every year we went to Nationals where our highest rank was 3rd in the nation.” After high school, she attended Tennessee State University in Nashville and majored in Architectural Engineering. In her junior year, she decided to enlist in the United States Navy and began her Military career. She recalls, “Bootcamp was in Chicago, then A-school in Florida, and my final placement was in San Diego, CA onboard the USS Ronald Reagan CVN-76 where I met my husband Timothy.”

Looking back on those days, Whitney remembers how difficult it was: “Phoenix had to have surgery because of a perforated bowel and hole in his colon. He went through four more surgeries before the age of one. He was in the hospital his whole first year.” Despite their fears, she admits, "Being in the thick of everything we just did what we needed to do as his parents. Phoenix was ultimately diagnosed with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome and a few other disabilities.” While in the hospital, Whitney realized her son needed custom attire that would fit him properly and accommodate the tubes and cords that were monitoring him. She decided to start altering his clothes. It wasn’t until her best friend brought up that she had always wanted to be a fashion

designer that she remembered this was a dream she’d had. “So much had happened since then,” she shares, “I guess I had put it to the back of my brain. My son brought it back out and I couldn’t be happier that he did.” Amidst the chaos of life, Whitney discovered altering clothing was a soothing and relaxing pastime. She asked her mother to teach her to sew. First learning how to sew a straight line and a zipper for a pillow, Whitney ran with it from there. She even started a small children’s clothing line (which still exists today!) called ImPerfectly Perfect Children’s Apparel (IMPKidz). Her children’s line drew attention and one day a client asked if she could make a prom gown. “I had never made a dress and was kind of nervous about it,” Whitney admits. “But I took on the challenge and it was a success.” Soon after, a bridal shop owner reached out about making a gown for their boutique. Whitney jumped at the opportunity and made the gown, but never heard back from the shop owner. “A lesson learned,” she says, “never make anything for anyone without payment first!” Following these design requests (along with a finished gown lying around that she didn’t know what to do with!) led Whitney to an idea. “I wanted to open a bridal shop,” she shares, “but not just any shop, one that will represent other minority designers like me who are not already in storefront locations. I wanted to represent the under-represented.” Sitting on the phone with her best friend one night, they went back and forth throwing names around until they finally got to Mahogany Brown Bridal and the tagline: “Where Melanin and Marriage Unite!” For her own newly acclaimed bridal brand, Whitney named it around her forever inspiration: her son, Phoenix. “I took my middle name and his middle name and came up with Lee Jerome.” On June 17th, 2022, Mahogany Brown Bridal officially opened its doors in historic downtown Concord, North Carolina. The boutique remains committed to creating an inclusive space for multicultural brides and designers regardless of race, religion, sexual preference, or ethnicity. Whitney shares, “Showcasing minority brands is important, as it addresses the under-representation of diverse backgrounds in the bridal market. By offering designers who reflect the diversity of brides, we create a space where all brides can find gowns that resonate with their unique identities.” Currently, Mahogany Brown Bridal carries Kosibah, elleNelle, Pantora, Odylyne The Ceremony, Keo, Edith Elan, Page XVII, and Lee Jerome. “We are in the works of adding Cynthia Grafton-Holt, Valentine Avoh, Lotus Threads, Luxe Collection Bridal, By Dani Simone, and Ritu Bhat,” Whitney adds. In that list are several MunaLuchi Coterie members, including Kosibah, Page XVII, elleNelle Bridal, and of course Whitney’s brand, Lee Jerome. Each of these talented designers recognized the significance of being a part of Mahogany Brown Bridal and supporting Whitney’s vision. Designer Leah Langley-McClean of elleNelle Bridal first heard about Whitney’s bridal boutique idea in 2020.

Leah shares, “Whitney and I are friends. We attended Tennessee State University together several years ago. She called me to share her idea of opening a bridal salon focused on closing the racial disparity of minorities in the bridal design space and said she wanted to carry my brand. The rest is history.” However, it was not only friendship that inspired her to join the boutique. “I truly believed in her mission,” Leah explains. “I could believe in it, not just because I’m affected by it, but because she was taking it seriously. A lot of times we get the short end of the stick as minority independent designers. We get the offers of "I want to carry your brand," but at your own expense. Whitney was the only retailer who treated my brand the same as any other designer and made a purchase order.” Fashion designer Jasmyne Summers of Page XVII connected with Whitney on Instagram in 2021 and soon after, she too joined the collaboration. Jasmyne shares: “Whitney’s mission is inspiring because it shows me that there is room for black women in the bridal space. I showcase my designs in Mahogany Bridal because Whitney sees us and understands us as designers. She’s rooting for all of us to win and the best way to win is when we win as a team.” Hailing from the United Kingdom, couture gown designer Yemi Kosibah first met Whitney when she stopped by his stand at the Union Square Bridal Show (part of New York Luxury Bridal Fashion Week) in the fall of 2021. After hearing her idea, Yemi knew he wanted his designs to be a part of her collection. Yemi recalls, “I was very impressed by how intentional Whitney’s vision to stock minority designers in her boutique was and I thought it was extremely important to support her to ensure the success of her plans.” On why more designers should join, he adds, “I think more minority designers should join this collaborative because quite frankly I don’t think there is anything else like it. Its success is very important to us all, otherwise, it may discourage other people with similar ideas to Whitney from taking that leap of faith. It's a win-win for us all.” For Whitney, the connections she’s made and friendships developed through her vision have been amazing. “I want to continue bringing us together and having events to gain exposure to the designers and brands,” she says. “I want all of us to be able to call on each other when we have a question or have an event and we all come together to support one another.” The journey hasn’t always been easy, of course. Whitney attributes the company's ability to triumph over adversity by embodying adaptability, reliance, customer-centricity, and innovation. “Our ability to swiftly adjust strategies and operations, foster a positive company culture, and leverage technology has played a major role,” she shares. “By prioritizing customer needs and delivering exceptional service, we have established and maintained strong relationships.” Fast forward to June of 2023, Whitney (along with fellow Designer Jasmyne Summers) joined the Coterie and we instantly recognized a creative synergy. Whitney’s desire to shine a spotlight on minority brands and designers aligns with MunaLuchi’s ongoing pursuit of diverse representation and inclusion in the wedding industry. With several Coterie designers already supporting Mahogany Brown Bridal’s mission, we decided to challenge Whitney and her Coterie Designer partners. We proposed a Muna Coterie Collaboration!

This unique test asked new Coterie members, Whitney and Jasmyne, to work together with their Coterie peers to create an original photo shoot celebrating minority-owned brands. The resulting styled shoot would be brought to life solely through the love of collaboration, without monetary compensation or promise of publication, and merely from the heart and soul of vendors coming together to support a mission greater than themselves. Up for the task, the pair accepted the challenge and got to work! Inspired by Mahogany Brown Bridal’s mission, their talented vendor team (made entirely of minority-owned wedding vendors) conceptualized, planned, and executed a chic-styled shoot on September 6th, 2023, at The Cloth Mill in Raleigh, North Carolina. D’Veilope Events created a delicate floral backdrop and provided the decor for the shoot. Makeup Artists Kalessia Bailey and Tycalyn Blackmoore, along with hair stylist Linda Stokes of Legacy Lux Hair got models glammed up and photo-ready. Exuding Black Excellence, eight models posed in Coterie Designer gowns, including Lee Jerome, Page XVII, elleNelle Bridal , and Kosibah— all of which are featured in Mahogany Brown Bridal’s boutique. The Artsy Girl and SuReina Bridal provided an extra dose of glam with bling and bridal accessories. From start to finish, Photographer Dajuan Jones of In His Image and Videographer Ray of Weddings by LDF expertly captured all the details. The resulting photos are a testament to the Coterie Community and the power of collaboration. For Whitney, the collaboration was an exciting step toward accomplishing her vision. She shares, “[Mahogany Brown Bridal] becoming the go-to bridal shop for multicultural brides will not only bring diversity to the forefront but also empower and celebrate the beauty of different cultures and backgrounds.” Whitney is well on her way to accomplishing her goal! As a newly initiated Coterie Member, she is most looking forward to being a part of a family: “To have a place and group that I can come to for advice. A place where I can grow. Gain exposure to new brides and wedding professionals. Network with members. Laugh and have fun.” We are extremely proud of all of the vendors who participated in this Muna Coterie Collaboration!

Trendwatch: New York Bridal Fashion Week 2023 TEXT BY MARIE D. SMITH

F

or the 2024 collections, designers gave the ‘more is more’ bride dramatic skirting, look-at-me statement veils, detachable sleeves, bows, and of course the playful mini.

Looking into the future, there was a common thread among the designers of wanting something bigger than themselves. By reconnecting with nature and even gowns that echoed the limitless wonders of the cosmos, the desire for brides to be in tune with their own sense of playfulness and grandeur was woven into every look. Giovanna Randall the founder of luxury brand HONOR echoed the sentiment of what many brides are looking for when dressing for the day of their dreams: "I feel like wedding dresses should transcend ordinary life and take you beyond just clothing. Somewhere into what it feels like to be in love.” A palette of colors from blues to black was shown this season along with silhouettes that incorporated dramatic bows. There was no shortage of minis either with some of the cutest styles ready to transport brides into the dream world of their imagination. We can’t wait to see what 2024 has in store for our brides. A Conversation with Justin Alexander Warshaw, the Man Behind The Brand TEXT BY LINDA WALLENTINE

Diversity. Inclusion. Representation. These are the core values of MunaLuchi Bride. We cater to the bold and the beautiful. The witty, vibrant, and free individual who is fearless and pursues their dreams passionately. Who exudes style and grace not just on their wedding day but every day. Who embraces culture and seeks inspiration that speaks to them. Our audience comes in all sizes and shades. Simply put, they are beautiful no matter what skin they’re in. MunaLuchi’s mission to uplift and celebrate couples from all backgrounds and to promote positive images of women of color should be an integral component of any brand. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. The bridal industry has been historically slow to make Black brides and other marginalized communities a priority. From the runways of Bridal Fashion Week to advertising campaigns, social media posts, and magazine covers, Black brides and brides of color are still severely lacking in representation. Curvy models and natural hairstyles are also frequently absent. While Black-owned publications and Black bridal designers have naturally prioritized multicultural brides, only recently have their White counterparts begun conducting deep dives into their brands, analyzing their media and marketing campaigns, and asking themselves the uncomfortable questions of “How can we do better?” and “What can we learn?”. Wedding dress brand powerhouse, Justin Alexander, is one notable company asking the tough questions. Munaluchi’s relationship with Justin Alexander began when Actress Michelle Mitchenor graced the cover of Munaluchi Bride’s Winter 2019 Issue wearing a stunning Justin Alexander Signature Gown in the style Berlin. The dress is a modern take on the

classic ball gown look, with a crepe bodice, satin collar, and tulle skirt. Regal and empowered, Michelle’s gorgeous cover marked the beginning of an ongoing dialogue between the brands on inclusivity and representation. While Justin Alexander has always strived to represent brides of all shades, shapes, and sizes, the partnership inspired new campaigns highlighting diverse brides. One of the brand’s most notable projects so far was their 2022 “Be You!” campaign. The project consisted of a photoshoot and video highlighting models ranging in body types, personalities, cultural backgrounds, and skin tones, all wearing equally unique gowns from one of Justin Alexander’s 5 bridal collections. Speaking on their “Be You!” campaign, Owner and Fashion Designer, Justin Alexander Warshaw, explained: “We want all of our brides to feel seen and easily imagine themselves in our gowns on their wedding day. To look at our photos and see

a familiar face, to see brides and models that represent them in all their unique and beautiful ways. It is our hope that this photoshoot accomplishes that. Allowing brides to be celebrated and represented through "Be You!".” This year, Justin Alexander again joined forces with MunaLuchi for a 2023 campaign. The goal is to bring more diversity to the brand and continue to strengthen its presence within the multicultural bridal market. On September 19th, 2023, the Muna Team traveled to Springfield Township, New Jersey for an exclusive styled shoot at Justin Alexander’s Showroom. Curated in tandem with the Justin Alexander team, the styled shoot showcased three models of color, including Derby Chukwudi (the reigning Miss New Jersey USA!), Jennifer Cadet, and Shakia Young. Each model was styled in looks hand-

selected by the Muna Team from JA’s various collections. For Justin Warshaw, this partnership is an important step in continuing to learn and cater to every bride who adores his gowns. “Number one is learning,” Justin shared. “I always think it’s important to have a dialogue. Two, we love to learn from you. I’ve had meetings with Jackie and Chike in the past just to learn what we can do better to serve the market because it's a learning process. We want to make sure we are doing everything we can to be inclusive.” For size inclusivity, the brand is already ahead of many other bridal companies by offering up to a size US 30 without an upcharge. This is rare in the bridal industry. He added, “Other things we do on sizing is making sure our dresses flatter all figures and that there’s proper boning and corsetry. We have a shapewear mesh that we like to include in all of our gowns,

especially the fitted ones, to make sure the bride is hugged and best flattering her body.” For deeper skin tones, Justin Alexander also offers 3 colors of mesh ranging from latte, caramel, and mocha. “We also do the same thing for bust cups,” he added. “You can swap out our mesh in our bust cups for no charge.” While these are positive steps, there will always be room for improvement. The JA team remains committed and openly honest about its ongoing journey toward implementing more diversity into its brand. “Every bride can have a great experience and we try to be as inclusive as we can,” Justin explained. “We’re always looking to learn. We appreciate our partnership with MunaLuchi for that same reason: there’s always a dialogue.” From photography to models featured in Bridal Fashion Week and representation on social media, Justin acknowledged that while their brand is always striving to be inclusive, there’s always more to be done. “Every season we’re trying to have a diverse bride included on every single brand that we’re shooting,” he shared. “We do our best to have a good assortment of imagery so every bride can see themselves in any particular gown. But it’s a challenge.” He concluded: “We’re always receptive to feedback and we’re happy that today [The Muna Team] is here shooting for us so we can share more diverse content.” Ultimately, navigating these important issues is not easy or comfortable. More brands like Justin Alexander need to start having these honest conversations, and consciously place brides of color at the forefront. Bringing diverse perspectives and people together is a key step in creating more inclusive and welcoming spaces for all brides. The more open discussions, brand collaborations, and partnerships occurring in the bridal world, the more the wedding industry will continue to grow and evolve in a positive direction. For Justin and his team, the conclusion of their MunaLuchi campaign will not mark the end of their mission to keep Black brides top of mind. There are many more exciting projects and collaborations to come. Justin shared, “We’re always interested in partnering with other brands that we can learn from and introduce our products to. brand, Justin Alexander Warshaw, in an exclusive Q&A. From debunking his namesake to his design inspiration, exciting life updates, and details on his latest 2023 Collection, The Art of Waiting, Justin gives us the inside scoop. We can’t wait to see what the future has in store for the Justin Alexander brand! Who is Justin Alexander? My first name is Justin. My middle name is Alexander. My Last name’s Warshaw. So I like to introduce myself as Justin Warshaw, because that’s my real name, but for Brides, for customers, I am known as Justin Alexander. When did you first realize that you wanted to join the family business? Was it a gradual progression or something that was expected? The company was established in 1946, so my grandparents started it. Then my father and his brothers took it over. When I was growing up I was always around business. The business at that time was in Manhattan, New York on 36th street in the Garment District. I was always hanging out there. Not necessarily getting involved with the business but seeing what was happening, and taking in all the action. Growing up, I often worked summers in the warehouse, helping out and answering emails… so I always was around

it. I was also traveling with my father, having exposure to trade shows, and having discussions with him, like “Hey, I’m thinking about doing this”, just to get me involved. Now I wasn't probably giving any good input at that time, but having exposure to the thought processes and strategies that he was involved with I think was always helpful. I kind of always knew growing up that [being in the family business] was what I wanted to do. I knew it was a great opportunity. I saw it as a way for me to put my own impact on something that we cherished as a family and put my own spin on it. The only time I was like, ‘Oh is this for me?” was probably when I first started… you know, it's tough being in a family business. I wanted to do things one way, and my father another way. There was some of that but it was never any doubt that I wanted to join the business. Do you enjoy the creative side or technical side more? I like both sides of the business. Interestingly, I studied international business at the University of Connecticut. I didn’t have an idea if I was going to be a part of the fashion side or the creative side as a kid, but when I graduated I felt that first of all there was an opportunity to improve the merchandising, the design, and the marketing. It was an area I wanted to approach first.

Once I started visiting stores, understanding the consumer, and their needs, visiting our design rooms, and working on helping develop products, I knew that I had a passion for that side, too. I tried to learn and absorb as much as I could. Then I realized I also had a knack for design and I loved it. So over time, I developed my skills in design and merchandising. It’s hard to pick one side. It’s one of the beautiful things about being able to touch both the commercial and the creative. It’s a great blend of responsibilities. Something new every day. There’s nothing better than when we’ve designed a collection and seeing the dresses come to life, and seeing them finally on real women. I love both sides and I think it kind of sets us apart a little bit from other brands, that I am involved in both sides of the company.

A lot of that is trunk shows. So I work with real brides and they try on our dresses, we talk to them about “what are you liking, what are you not liking?” It helps shape ideas and can direct us on what brides are loving and not loving. Pairing that with exposure to Old Hollywood and ateliers, I love to gather inspiration from travel, and museums, and then channel that individual brand that I’m designing for and try to re-interpret something in a way that works well for that brand and that brides will love. It truly starts with the women we are designing for. What about custom gowns? For the majority of our dresses, the bride will look at the catalog of our collection and select a dress. There are custom options for that dress. So if they see a dress that they love, for most of our brands they can customize and make it their own in some ways.

From first starting in the business to now, how have you seen the company evolve? It’s an oversimplification of things, but I like to think that we were somewhat Bridal Manufacturers before. Now we’ve really developed into a brand with a strong portfolio. It’s not exactly correct because of course we did have brands before too, but we’ve done a lot of work to refine them, improve them, and expand our portfolio and presence in the United States. When I joined the business, I’d say about 90% of our business was in Europe. Our business has grown in Europe, too, in the last 10-15 years. But, it has grown a LOT in the US where we’re one of the stronger players in the bridal industry with several collections that have performed quite well for our retailers that brides absolutely love. That has been a big improvement. Helping out our marketing team… we have a really strong marketing team. And again, team, people, we have so many talented individuals that we’ve been able to bring on who have taken their department and expanded and grown and brought a lot of value to our customers. There’s been a lot of change. A lot of good change. And more to come, for sure. Going back to designing and the creative aspect, do you remember the first dress you ever designed from start to finish? I remember some of the early days dresses. I don’t remember the first one. But I do remember some of the early days dresses. There’s one in particular that stands out to me. Ironically, it was an a-line natural-waisted, gathered tule skirt, very simple, and it had a delicate longlace bodice, with tulle draped over it. Just delicate and simple. It wasn’t necessarily my proudest accomplishment but for me at that time, it was more about commercial-made gowns and trying to make something that had nice detail and fit the market. At that point, our market was more prominent in Europe. As I mentioned in the early days, we didn’t have that much going on in the US. It wasn’t necessarily my proudest design, but it was cool to begin that design process and get involved in that. What is your design process? For me, such a big part of my process is working with real women and a lot of that is experimentation on dresses that we’ve already developed.

Of course, from time to time, we will work with a bride and do something fully custom for her. It’s a smaller part and it is fun to do because obviously, that’s where the new, fresh, out-of-the-box ideas come from creating something from scratch. But what we do do is try to merchandise our lines so a bride can find something from our collections. What’s your favorite all-time gown? Can you share any details about your latest collection, The Art of Waiting? My favorite gown of all time is the Bobbie dress. Bobbie is from the JA Signature Collection. This particular gown was made right around the time I was planning my wedding. The inspiration of traveling to different wedding venues and the planning process really inspired me to create beautiful floral gowns with 3D floral details. This particular dress was definitely my favorite. The new collection (The Art of Waiting) is inspired by something that’s currently happening in my life. Chelsey and I are having a baby in November. Just the feeling of anticipation inspired that new collection. So there may be a new favorite gown from that line called Pax. It is kind of a derivative of the Bobbie dress but it's a fitted, beautiful draped charmeuse dress, with gorgeous floral details at the neckline. So similar in that way, but a completely different dress. There’s something about 3D florals that I absolutely love. Finding inspiration in my regular life and pouring it out into my creations, it’s really special to be able to do that. How would you describe your style as a designer? Modern, architectural, clean aesthetic with a little bit of detail. I love bringing in understated dimensions and detail. So for the laces, we try to bring in very soft, romantic details. I like to bring a diverse collection out. Obviously, brides have different tastes. While the overall feeling is cohesive, I like to bring diversity in and try new modern necklines and draping, and bringing out the latest trends so it is a diverse, cohesive blend of beauty.

Tell me a bit about your journey into the fashion industry. When did you first fall in love with fashion design and how has your journey evolved since then? Thank you! I was drawn to fashion at a young age because of my mom, but I actually started in the industry with no formal training or experience. I started Hanifa in 2012 when I saw the need for bold, sophisticated, size-inclusive clothing. Since then, the brand has really evolved along with my own life.

o ya'll remember during the pandemic when Hanifa "broke the internet" (more like the glass ceiling) with their 3D virtual fashion show, literally setting the standard for other designers to quickly learn CLO3D and host virtual fashion shows of their own? Well, founder and fashion designer, Anifa Mvuemba, is back and setting more trends. And this time she’s entering the bridal chat! Hanifa debuted their latest and most sought-after bridal collection of 31 pieces on October 14th, 2023, at the Black-owned Salamander Resort in Middleburg, Virginia. Brides-to-be, influencers, and girls with major wedding dreams could not get enough of the Runway show looks. Many quickly added these fresh styles to their Pinterest mood boards, myself included.

In a conversation with my best friend, we shared similar sentiments on which bridal look we would wear to each pre and post-wedding event (and neither of us is even engaged yet!). Anifa Mvuemba is not new to the fashion world, but she is most definitely true to it. As a supporter of her ready-to-wear collection since 2016, I could not contain my excitement for this latest drop. After visiting a Hanifa Sample Sale in 2019 let's just say Hanifa never disappoints. I cannot wait to see the bridal pieces in real life! women are getting engaged and married? Was this part of the reason you are now entering into the bridal market? I’ve always said that the brand reflects where I am in life. When I started Hanifa, I was in my twenties and needed a birthday dress, so it only seems fitting that our bridal collection launches as I am a bride-to-be. Truthfully, a bridal collection has always been a dream of mine and has been years in the making. I’ve been an avid follower of the Hanifa brand since 2015/2016 and even attended a sample sale in NYC in November 2019. How will this collection differ from other bridal designers in the market and what message about marriage and bridal fashion are you expecting to share with your audience? I wanted this collection to focus on self-love and self-worth above anything. Just as the bride of Christ epitomizes devotion, grace, and feminine strength, our collection aims to empower brides to embrace their own unique radiance, celebrating the limitless woman within. The collection differs because it’s true to the Hanifa Woman.

I believe God is in the seams of everything Hanifa touches and creates. I love how Hanifa adds bible scriptures to the tags of most of the pieces. What inspired you to create this particular collection? Are there specific themes or elements that you focused on? Throughout this collection, I was inspired by the bride of Christ and focusing on self-love that helps prepare the heart for marriage. Could you share insights into your design process for the bridal collection? What materials and techniques did you use to bring your vision to life? This collection has been years in the making. We wanted to challenge ourselves by using different techniques and materials than our typical RTW pieces. I think I was most excited to see our beaded pieces come together. Several of our looks feature handbeaded crystals and sequins that really elevate the collection.

Hanifa has mastered the art of luxury ready to wear for the multicultural fashion market. Here at Munaluchi, our mission is to cater to the multicultural bridal market and represent couples of color. We want brides to see themselves and find inspiration and information when wedding planning. In which ways will Hanifa continue to set the standard of well-curated, size-inclusive fashion in a bespoke bridal manner? We’ve always focused on being size-inclusive, so that will remain true throughout our bridal designs. For this collection, I wanted to incorporate skin-tone mesh pieces that can be customized to each bride’s complexion. I’m so excited to see them on our future Hanifa brides. I love the Hanifa color palette and cannot wait to see what the main color story will be introduced for the Hanifa bridal collection. Can you tell us if there will be signature silhouettes or styles that brides-to-be should be looking forward to? For example, taking the Hanifa Kleo Jumpsuit, and Luna Halter Gown, and making a bridal version? We were happy to feature a couple of classic Hanifa pieces in our Bridal collection – the Luna gown and Simone gown are getting their bridal moments. Will we get the chance to see more coordinating combinations such as a two-piece bridal blazer suit and palazzo pant combination?

Hanifa RTW is doing wonders with unconventional footwear and accessories designs. Will Hanifa Bridal include accessories, including more mules and comfortable shoe selections for the bride to stand tall all day? Will we see headpieces in this collection? Yes, this collection features accessories and headpieces to pair with different looks. I’m very excited to continue designing that part of the collection. Bridal design is intricate and demanding. What challenges are you facing currently during the creative process, and how are you overcoming them? I think the most challenging part is bringing the vision to life of the overall Hanifa Bridal experience. Throughout the process, I’ve realized that Bridal is its own department, and we’re essentially developing a new brand with its own look, feel, and voice. There are a lot of moving parts and we’re always striving to elevate as a brand by giving our customers the very best experience. Listening to them and placing ourselves in their shoes is what continues to guide us towards this growth. Additionally, what moments so far are bringing you the most satisfaction and pride while planning to bring this collection to life?

Yes! Are the pieces from the collection mainly reception wear or will there be a nice mixture of wedding ceremony, civilcourthouse wedding, and reception looks? There are looks for every part of the bridal journey, I wanted to incorporate looks for every bride in our debut collection.

Launching Bridal has truly been a full circle moment for me, starting with custom pieces for brides as a new designer in my twenties and re-entering the space with more knowledge and new passion in my thirties has been rewarding.

Will your collection offer custom gowns like a bridal atelier where brides-to-be will be able to visit your bridal studio or showroom for fittings? Not immediately, but yes. How will your bridal collection be organized, solely sold online or can brides shop in person? We’ve been working on the backend to develop this branch of Hanifa in the right way. Brides can shop our RTW pieces online, but soon they’ll be able to book an appointment in our bridal atelier to find the perfect made-toorder dress for their special day. Do you already have brides who will be wearing your gowns in 2024? Our RTW pieces are available to shop, so hopefully we’ll start seeing Brides wearing our pieces in the next couple of months! What do you hope to achieve with this bridal collection? Are there any plans or projects in the pipeline that your admirers can look forward to? This Bridal collection is the first expansion of Hanifa. We like to keep our customers and supporters guessing about what’s next. Lastly, I believe many of your followers want to know this just like myself, will you be designing your wedding dress? Known by their beloved fans as Mr. and Mrs. KevOnStage, our featured cover couple, Kevin and Melissa Fredericks, are the funniest, most genuine pairing we know! The couple is recognized for their individual accolades and shared accomplishments. Kevin is an Actor, Comedian, Filmmaker, Director, Speaker, Content Creator, and Influencer known for his roles in No Good Men (2008), The Family Exchange (2015), and Major Deal (2016). He also started his streaming service, KevOnStage Studios, which unapologetically celebrates Black-owned content and digital creators across the Black community and was most recently announced as the new Co-Host of TBS’s ‘Friday Night Vibes’ Revival with Nina Parker airing on Jan. 5 at 8:00 pm ET/PT. (Oh, and I forgot to mention he has over 1.7 million followers on Instagram!). Melissa’s portfolio is equally expansive. As a Digital Content Creator, Author of the self-help book, The Journey to Self-Love, and Influencer, she is known for her advocacy of self-love and acceptance. Her open and honest dialogue about her journey of self-discovery and learning to love herself fully has helped her cultivate a community of dedicated fans. She has inspired countless women to embrace their inner beauty and lead confident, fulfilling lives. Together, Kevin and Melissa are the parents of two boys (their pride and joy!) and are a successful couple in business with multiple media platforms including The Love Hour Podcast and Keep Your Distance Comedy. In 2022, they even wrote a New York Times Bestseller called (in typical, totally honest, KevOnStage fashion): Marriage Be Hard. The established power couple, who have been married for almost 20 years, first met in their 11th-grade history class. “Miss Chapman’s US history class,” Kevin recalls, smiling. “I saw Melissa in the back of the room. She was gorgeous and beautiful.” He decided to pass her a note, but as if straight out of a romantic comedy, Kevin’s attempt to share his feelings didn’t go as planned. “As I was writing, another young man tapped me and was like, 'Can you hand this note to her?' I did. I was sad. But then she read it and didn't look up at him, and I thought, I have a chance.” He did have a chance. But, he decided to keep the note and pursued Melissa as a friend first instead. At the time, Melissa’s first impression of her now hubby was a bit different. She shares, “My first impression of Kev was that he was extremely likable but Kev didn't know what he wanted in a woman.” “I was so churchy,” she adds, laughing. “I used a church phrase. He was a ‘fisher of men.’ That's what I used to call him because he was just liking whatever girl would give him the time of day.” However, soon their initial friendship blossomed into something undeniably deeper and they started dating. Twenty-three years ago, in the year 2000, they went on their first date.

“Our first date was at the Dollar Movies,” Melissa shares. “We lived on a military base, and they would have $1 Thursdays. So we went with a group of friends to see Gladiator.” That first date led to many more. They were inseparable: laughing, loving, and enjoying life together. It didn’t take long for them each to realize they had found “the one.” Keven recalls, “We were dating in college. I was an Air Force ROTC, everybody was talking about where their duty stations were going to be, and I remember thinking, 'I don't care where I get stationed or what job I do, as long as I'm with Melissa, I'll be happy.' Then I thought, 'I should marry her if I feel this way.' That's when I knew she was the one.” Melissa realized Kevin was “the one” while deciding if she wanted to be a lawyer. She ultimately changed the trajectory of her career path for the future of their relationship. She shares, “I took this class literally on the LSATs and how to prepare for law school. The professor was saying how the majority of law students have high divorce rates, even when they go into practicing law, because of the hours and the stress. I was like, 'Oh God. I don't want to go into a field that's already predetermined...' At the time, it felt like it was predetermined that I was going to be divorced. I think that career change, and how I felt [about] how serious we were at the time, those two things combined, I decided not to do that anymore.” Of course, being with the love of her life made the decision worth it and Kevin proposed on Easter Sunday during their sophomore year of college. Melissa admits she was “totally surprised.” “He was there talking about how God loves the church so much, that he sacrificed himself, something along those lines,” she says, smiling. “He called me up and then my two sisters and two friends came out and they each had a sign, 'Will you marry me?' I was completely shocked. I should have known, though, because it was Easter Sunday and my mom and my first lady were trying to get me to buy a new outfit for Easter, and I was so churchy, that I was like, 'This is about Easter and God. Why are we worried about clothes? I don't need new clothes.'" If she could do it over again, she might have worn a different outfit for the proposal, but Melissa wouldn’t have changed her answer! She happily said “Yes!” and slipped on the ring. Young, in love, and without much money in his pocket, Kevin admits, “It was a $99 ring. No tax. It was literally $99.” The price tag didn’t matter to Melissa, though. Not one bit. “It was a little single solitary ring,” she recalls, fondly. “I loved that ring. I had that ring for a long time.” The couple wed on June 26th, 2004, in an intimate ceremony in Washington state. “Our colors were lavender and silver,” Melissa shares. “There wasn’t a theme. It was a great day. All in all, living in Washington state and getting a sunny day, even in June, is low-key kind of rare. All of our friends were there. We had friends from high school, friends from college, friends from our church that showed up, and then family, of course.”

While their first wedding was beautiful, key people were missing from their first special day. Melissa reveals, “We got married in 2004, so this is after the 9/11 attacks, and both of our dads were in the military and they were both called to duty. My dad didn't get a chance to walk me down the aisle, and Kevin's dad was not present at the wedding.” This leads us to the present day, and the couple’s decision to host their grand destination vow renewal in Mexico next year! Melissa and Kevin celebrated the beginning of their Road to Renewal with a luxurious photo shoot on Tuesday, October 17th, 2023, at the Malibu Garden Estate in Malibu California. Their creative team included planning by CM Events and Design, florals by Hidden Garden Florals, photography by Coterie member REEM Photography, and videography by Unleashed Vizuals. Posing before breathtaking Malibu landscapes, Melissa and Kevin looked equal parts chic and sexy in their outfits which were expertly styled by GG&Co. Styling Firm. Melissa’s short hairstyle was elevated with soft waves by Greg Gilmore and completed with classic glam makeup by Darien Isaac. The resulting photos are a joyous display of their love and affection for each other. Ultimately, Melissa and Kevin’s playful banter paired with real talk about marriage, raising children, and topics they’re passionate about (such as celebrating and highlighting the Black community), have catapulted them into our hearts. With so many exciting things going on for these two, we couldn’t pass on the opportunity to chat. And with Kevin and Melissa’s upcoming destination vow renewal, we literally couldn’t resist! So sit back, relax, and prepare to laugh out loud as we get the inside scoop from Mr. and Mrs. KevOnStage on everything from who’s funnier (yes, we went there!), how they navigate marriage and business today, and their exciting Road to Renewal! When you first met, who was funnier? KEVIN: I was funnier. MELISSA: I was definitely funnier. KEVIN: Melissa didn't even get funny until she met me. MELISSA: I was secretly funny. KEVIN: She never even made a joke until she started dating me. MELISSA: I was secretly funny but back then nobody knew. Being married for almost 20 years now, what's your secret to a longlasting, healthy marriage? How do you guys keep your relationship fresh and spicy?

KEVIN: We use this analogy a lot, but Melissa came up with it about how cell phones work. If you have an iPhone, every year, every couple of months, there's some changes to the software or the hardware, and you're constantly learning and adapting to it. No headphone jack, USB-C, this button on the side no longer exists, whatever. You constantly are learning and changing with it. Year to year, it doesn't seem like a lot of change but if you went from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 14, it'd be a lot of changes between the phone and the app, and marriage is very similar in that way. To have a happy, healthy marriage, you're going to constantly be loving a person that's changing and they'll be loving you while you're changing, and that means constant communication, conversation, and simple things like I used to hate salmon and avocados and now I like them. Melissa went from very forward and strong to, "Okay, I should take a backseat because that's what the church taught me," to actually, "I am going to take up all my space again," and loving her through those changes. Then there are physical changes to the body or health and going from having no kids to one kid to two kids to two kids who need a lot of help, because they're young, to two kids who are in high school, who don't need that much help. There's all those constant changes that you have to be doing, and I think that being in love with the current version of your spouse is what keeps things spicy and fresh and current. I think a lot of couples after many years just decide they no longer want to do the work, and that's why they don't be married no more. You guys are the ultimate power couple. As a couple in business and on multiple platforms, including the Love Hour Podcast and Keep Your Distance Comedy, how do you navigate being in a romantic and business relationship? KEVIN: I think we're still learning how to do that. MELISSA: It's underrated how difficult it is to partner with your spouse in both business and, obviously, romance. KEVIN: A friend of ours used this analogy and it helps. One is a producer and the other is a singer and the producer was fussing at the singer. She was like, "It's hard when your producer is also your husband because both of those entities are in one body, so when you're frustrated at your producer when you guys go home, that's still your husband, but that frustration is still there." I think for Melissa and I, we are partners and we're also business partners and coworkers. Carrying or not carrying work frustration into actual frustration is hard. I think for us the thing we're currently working on the most is just communication, especially me. Communication, communication, over-communication, in life, overall, and, hopefully, that passes into business and makes it easier. To Melissa's point, it is very underrated how difficult it can be, because most people go to work and they come home and talk about their day. We experience a lot of our same day together. MELISSA: If I had any advice to add to what Kev was just talking about, it's definitely, A - communicate but I think, B - it's also taking

care and consideration and the words that you say and allowing the flexibility and rapport to be offering an opinion but also offering one that still is with care and concern, because at the end of the day, that is still your spouse and your partner. The reality is we really should be doing that at work anyway. KEVIN: Yes. MELISSA: We just take for granted the fact that we're talking to maybe a subordinate, and so you may not take as much care and concern, but, if we practiced it all the time, it would be much easier with your partner. What were your biggest struggles in the process of working together? KEVIN: In this line of business, most of the people that worked with me worked for me. There wasn't usually a person who was my equal in the same job title. When Melissa and I began to work together, there were moments of learning how to talk to your wife who is also your partner but not your subordinate. I just come across as very direct, because usually people ask me a question, and I give them the answer. But when your wife is asking that question, and that answer is given without softness and kindness, can be too harsh whereas your employee can be like, "I hate my boss," but they don't have to like you for them to do a good job. Your spouse actually has to like you. Learning how to take more care with that and be more understanding, caring, and showing more concern, than I had to with people who just reported to me, but I didn't see them after work. It's just a different dynamic. What is your proudest accomplishment so far? MELISSA: Writing our book, Marriage Be Hard, together. KEVIN: And being a New York Times best-seller. That's our proudest accomplishment. Whose idea was it to write the book? MELISSA: Kev was presented with the opportunity to write a book, and he wanted to do a book that we did together as his first one. Was it difficult to evaluate your marriage, dissect it, and have an open and honest dialogue about the good and the bad, and then write it all out and share it in the book? MELISSA: Honestly, in a lot of ways, the book is a compilation of the highlights from the Love Hour Podcast. I feel like it's just a way for everyone to get a lot of the really great information we offered in the podcast over the years in one central location. In that regard, no, I don't think it was difficult. However, even though, a lot of the stuff or some of the stuff was information we'd either shared before or thought about before, for whatever reason, writing the book was a more therapeutic process than the podcast.

KEVIN: I was going to say that. There's some stuff that we hadn't reached back and talked about for years, that wasn't necessarily healed, it was just buried, and to write the book, we had to uncover it and deal with it ... Sometimes we would go to therapy and that week's topic would be whatever we were dealing with with the book, because we realized it was unfinished. MELISSA: Yeah. KEVIN: I think we came out more healed on the other side as a result of writing the book. Together, you're a force on social media. What's your favorite part about making content together? KEVIN: I think people don't understand how funny and creative Melissa is, so when we do our creative couple videos, more often than not, those are her ideas. Seeing those go crazy, for me, is very fulfilling, becauseMELISSA: For me too. KEVIN: ... I just be like, "Thank, y'all." I think I get the credit for being funny, but Melissa is very funny and very creative and studies social media, at least, as much as I do, if not more, because she's aware of my industry, plus other industries where I'm usually not as aware of other industries. MELISSA: I really do enjoy being able to make the content together and when they do well, whether it's my idea or his, to be honest, it doesn't matter but because we do so many things, we actually don't do a lot of things together. I think whenever we do something together, it allows us to shine together. I feel really good and warm and fuzzy. How do you balance your personalities and creative energy? KEVIN: I don't know if we balance our personalities. I think we leave space for our ‘persons-alities.’ MELISSA: Yeah. I think I know what you mean. KEVIN: I think Melissa knows who I am, and she allows

me to be who I am, and I allow her to be who she is. I think we're just different people living life together. And we leave room for each other and honor our differences. That's what makes us a good team because we have different skills. On your upcoming road to renewal, what do you envision for your second walk down the aisle? MELISSA: For me, first and foremost, there are two goals I would say when it comes to the vow renewal. The first one is that our families will be present, so that's a non-negotiable for me. My dad and Kevin's dad and, of course, everyone else, but those are nonnegotiables. I'm not doing this again, a third time, a fourth time. I'm not doing it again. This one is the one that I really do want all of our family present. I know it's already been 20 years but I do want all of our family present, probably because I'm also doing a destination vow renewal, and so I want the togetherness of the family, I want the memories to be made. A lot of them haven't been to a resort. This will be their first time in Mexico. There are so many things we're going to be experiencing together. It's really important for me that my family is there. That's the number one. But number two, I want luxe, I want romance, I want fun, I want it to be just a great time for everyone present. Yeah. I'm envisioning a lot. I don't have a vision for my dress, though, oddly enough. I feel like I've concentrated on the space, itself, and for whatever reason, I have not zoned into how I want to look. That's not top of mind as much as I know I don't want bridesmaids, for example, I know I don't want my husband to have groomsmen. I've decided everyone in attendance will be part of the wedding party, and so they'll all be color-coordinated, instead of standing next to us. I think ... Not I think...I know I want my boys up there. I know I want a lot of greenery and a lot of roses and a lot of very romantic colors. But what I will actually look like, I don't know yet.

Why do you think it's important to re-honor your vows to each other in this way?

MELISSA: Number one, because I mean it this time. I hoped it was the first time.

Are the kids going to participate in the ceremony?

MELISSA: Now after 20 years, I mean it.

MELISSA: Absolutely. They'll be the only ones on the stage in addition to us.

You're both passionate about supporting Black designers, Black brands, and vendors of color. How are you incorporating diversity into your second wedding? MELISSA: If it's up to me, I'm trying to find a Black designer. Kev's suit will probably be by a Black designer. My creative team is Black... We are very intentional about supporting Black brands but also we support Black brands in the same way that you may go to Target or Walmart. We do it because that's just the nature of how we operate and do business. At this point, we don't always have to go out of our way to support Black businesses. Black businesses are in our network.

ENGAGEMENT SESSION THEME: It was classic and elegant. We love to travel so we wanted to have a shoot that showed a different place than where we lived. Miami was one of our first trips together as a couple so it made sense to do our photo and video shoot there. We also love classic cars so we had a classic Mercedes Benz as part of our shoot with florals in the back seat. FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE: We love to travel and visit new places, concerts, watching movies and we absolutely love dressing up and going out to social events. We’ve been to more galas as a couple than we’ve been to in our entire lives! We laugh a lot and enjoy each other's company no matter where we are or what we are doing. H O W H A S W E D D I N G P L A N N I N G B E E N S O FA R ? Wedding planning has been going great so far. Our vision of that day is in sync and we like a lot of the same things in terms of decor etc. so it hasn’t been stressful at all. Not only are we excited about being husband and wife but also recognize what a blessing it is for both of us to have a second chance at love! I then left Duke to pursue my Nurse Practitioner and doctorate degree a few years later. When I returned in 2017, we crossed paths again and have been together ever since. PROPOSAL STORY: He proposed on December 11th, 2021, in Myrtle Beach, SC surrounded by friends. We had planned to hand out gifts to our friends, dressed as Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Prior to handing out the “gifts” to our friends, he told me he had a gift for me. He then took out a ring box and said, “It's not what you think it is,” and when he opened the box, it was a ring pop. After he put it on my finger, I turned around to show it to our friends. H O W T H E Y M E T: Through Kenneth's early high school years and Georgia's late middle school years, the 2 met through a social event hosted at Christ the King Church in the Bronx. Kenneth, a member of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, and Georgia, a member of the Ghanaian Catholic Community, started off as distant friends. They'd oftentimes cross paths at church functions and the infamous Mullally Park on 167th Street. In the year of 2011, Kenneth tried asking Georgia out for the first time, and she declined. It would take 2 more tries before Kenneth cracked the code and got Georgia to agree on a date 3 years later, in the summer of 2014 - the rest is history. Since that summer, the two have been inseparable, enjoying countless movie dates followed by ice cream shop visits, and of course world travel. P R O P O S A L S T O R Y: In April 2022, at Georgia's 25th birthday party, instead of a Chanel bag and after 8 years of dating, Kenneth asked Georgia to be his forever and she screamed YES! WHEN DID YOU KNOW HE/SHE WAS “THE ONE”? Kenneth and I couldn't be more different from one another, but we fill in the gaps missing from the other person. I can be super rigid and by the book, whereas he is fun and more go with the flow. The one thing we both love to do is laugh and try new things and so it all just works to create such a beautiful union. The saying "better half " could not be more true when it comes to the two of us. DESCRIBE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION. DID YOU HAVE A THEME? We've seen a lot of engagement shoots that are super edgy, lol. He and I are far from edgy, more fun, light-hearted, and silly (more Kenneth than me). And so we wanted our shoot to capture that! And I think Stanley hit the nail on the head for sure. WHAT DID YOU DO ON YOUR FIRST DATE? Our first kind of date was to see Temptation by Tyler Perry. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE? We love going to the movies & trying new ice cream shops together. Our favorite ice cream shop is Minus Celsius on the Lower East Side in NYC! HOW HAS WEDDING PL ANNING BEEN SO FAR? HARD and frustrating, but it has been beautiful to see the families come together and work on such an important event. TELL US WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ON THE WEDDING DAY. I’m most looking forward to seeing all of the hard work and sacrifices we've made in the last year come to light in front of our closest family and friends. We also have family coming out that we haven't seen in YEARS, in some cases even decades, and so it will be nice to see them again and introduce ourselves as husband and wife.

ove, elegance, and historic charm came together in perfect harmony at the breathtaking Larz Anderson House in the heart of Washington, D.C.

Nestled amid the city's bustling streets, this stunning mansion provided the idyllic backdrop for a wedding that will forever be etched in the memories of the happy couple and their guests. For portraits, the couple decided on the breathtaking National Cathedral backdrop with an Anne Barge gown "Solana" that has a detachable train. The train filled the sun-drenched alcove and matched the grandeur from the framed window. The reception was filled with blues, greens, and abundant florals with touches of browns and creams. As the guest ate the sun dipped below the skies and the reflection pool became mirrored glass. After drinks and dessert, the couple exited with flowers being thrown by happy guests. his editorial, entitled "Deep Elegance," was beautifully imagined by workshop host Ashton Jean-Pierre and co-designers Joy Proctor and Jet Set Wed, among a whole team of talented creatives. By way of this styled shoot, Ashton, being a deaf photographer, empowered our team to learn the power of movement and creative direction without verbal speech. Incorporating silent movement as a means of connecting with the models created an environment of serenity, which tied in beautifully with the calm setting and elegant details. The shoot, inspired by African royalty, incorporated rich hues as well as romantic and feminine details. Set in a sandy island forest, the vignettes were framed by the natural beauty of Spanish moss, softening the light and adding elegant tranquility. - Jenny Wagner Photography

L

ove is all about timing. For Shiloh and James, when they first met in high school at the end of 1999, it wasn’t their time to fall in love yet. Shiloh admits: “I was talking to a friend of his, so there was no romantic interest.” The pair kept in touch and over a decade later in 2015, they both happened to be single. Shiloh began seeing James differently while on a trip to Miami. She caught the flu and everyday James called her to check in. “We’d talk for hours,” she recalls, smiling. “I knew then that he was starting to see me as more than a friend. There hasn’t been a day we haven’t talked since.” With the timing finally right, they went on their first date a few weeks later and the rest is history! The friends-turned-lovers took their relationship to the next level in 2022 when James proposed to Shiloh on the weekend of his 39th birthday. Disguised as a b-day celebration for himself (planned and executed by his best friend, Deryk, and his soonto-be fiancée!), James popped the question while giving a toast– Shiloh had no idea! They became husband and wife on June 3rd, 2023 in a beautiful destination wedding weekend at the Cap Juluca Belmond Hotel in Anguilla. Their wedding planner, Rolanda Hardy of Vision into Reality Events, brought their dream of minimal, relaxed, classic luxury to life while their talented photographer, Matoli Keely Photography, captured all the details. “It was wonderful,” Shiloh shares. “We will cherish that weekend for the rest of our lives.”

wedding highlights Wedding flowers: I wasn’t too particular about the details but Rolanda knew I liked Calla Lily’s and it turned out lovely. Favorite item on the menu: The chicken Bridesmaids/groomsmen gifts: Travel toiletry bags with Delta Airline gift cards, and a few other small items. First dance song: It didn’t quite happen like that. He and I both love music so as soon as Brian (the DJ) put the jams on we were both up dancing in between dinner courses. Advice for brides: Trust your planner more, it will turn out better for you by allowing you to relax and have fun. Wear what you want. Get a great photographer.

elebrating culture, family, their romantic journey, and all the cherished moments to come, Milan Sai and Suraj’s destination wedding in Bali heartfully and authentically expressed their deep love and connection. Milan Sai’s and Suraj’s families became friends when they were twelve years old. For a time, Suraj visited Hong Kong, where Milan Sai lived, every year. Suraj’s cousin and Milan Sai’s sister were dating and they had hoped the two would become good friends. Their hope was more than fulfilled as Milan Sai and Suraj’s relationship continued to grow and deepen in the future. Their love story officially began in New York City, where after six years of dating long distance, Suraj surprised Milan Sai with the upmost romantic and grand proposal. Milan Sai shares, “Suraj went all out for the proposal. He booked a rooftop in Soho, New York, and arranged for a violinist to play our favorite songs. The rooftop was beautifully decorated with roses and candles…” The night didn’t end there; Suraj whisked Milan Sai away to a surprise destination via helicopter. They flew to Boston and ended the night with a romantic dinner at their favorite restaurant, Yvonne’s. Their destination wedding at the Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort in Bali featured ornate and luxuriant overhead florals, beautiful customary Hindu traditions, and the breathtaking surroundings of Bali. Milan Sai and Suraj both desired their wedding to be authentic and one of a kind to celebrate their culture and represent who they are as a couple.

Favorite item on the menu: My favorite was the risotto and the fruit tartlet. Chris’s favorite was the chicken supreme with merlot wine sauce and the mashed potatoes. Bridesmaids/groomsmen gifts: We opted out of having a wedding party, flower girl, and ring bearer. First dance song: “Nothing Even Matters” by Sir Advice for brides: It helps that I didn’t feel like I had to control everything. Find someone you trust, who knows what you want, and leave the details to them. I kept an open mind to what things could look or sound like and made peace that whatever the outcome, it was still going to be beautiful. Don’t feel obligated to follow traditions. If you don’t care about something new, something blue, or something old, forget about it. If you really could care less about having bridesmaids and groomsmen, and it would be one last thing to stress about, let that tradition go. Last word of advice, do not have financial obligations haunting you. You have enough to think about. Scale back if need be, and pay everything well before your wedding day. There are things your guests are not going to focus on that you do not need to stress yourself over. Before everything else, spend money on attire. When you look like a million bucks so will your wedding.

T

he Hotel Villa Caletas was the gorgeous setting in Costa Rica for Altrina and Chris’ intimate outdoor wedding.

After meeting online during the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020, Chris popped the question two years later with a surprise proposal on top of the Kula Mountains during Altrina’s birthday vacation in Hawaii and the rest is history. The bride and groom’s event planner, CM Events & Design, transformed the venue into a luxury wedding paradise that overlooked black sand beaches. The couple’s floral team at Art Flower thoughtfully created colorful arrangements that echoed the surrounding natural blooms which gave the ceremony and reception a vibrant pop of color. Not only was their location visually stunning but Altrina’s bridal gown from celebrity designer Ese Azenabor struck all the right notes with it being the perfect dress for her tropical wedding in paradise. ennifer and Zamir both agree: “When you know, you just know! It’s that simple.”

After meeting at a cousin's graduation party, that sentiment couldn’t be more true. The pair talked for hours. “We instantly clicked,” Jennifer shares, smiling. From then on, they were inseparable. They built upon that initial connection until they found themselves deeply in love. Ready for forever, Zamir planned dinner reservations for two and told his soon-to-be fiancée to get ready for a nice night out. Jennifer may have been on to Zamir, who paced back and forth and seemed anxious, but she was thrown off when they stopped at a family member's house to say a quick happy birthday to someone. When they walked into the house, Jennifer was pleasantly surprised to see a whole setup with candles and “Will you marry me?” letters. “It was truly beautiful!” she recalls. Their destination elopement in Santorini, Greece, was a modern and elegant affair by the sea. Planned and designed by DW Events, their wedding flowers were all white with roses, orchids, hydrangeas, and lilacs. Jennifer radiated joy in her Maggie Sottero fit and flare gown with a sweetheart neckline, off-the-shoulder straps, and sparkle and lace details. She styled her hair in a sleek pony with Hollywood waves and accessorized with a headpiece from Glitz and Glam Bridal to match their elegant aesthetic. V

anessa and Raquese’s love story started when they met as teenagers.

Raquese, having a bold personality, and with no hesitation, introduced himself to Vanessa’s mom as her boyfriend before ever speaking a word to Vanessa. After a couple of years of dating, they became pregnant with their first child and became a family, but it wasn’t time for their happily ever after just yet; as teenagers often do, Vanessa and Raquese broke up. When the timing was right, they were able to reunite and now live together with their two sons and daughter. The couple shares, “We knew we found the one after we had split for 4 years and made our way back to one another living up to the saying "If it is meant to be it'll be." What Vanessa thought was going to be a special dinner for Raquese’s birthday turned out to be much more. After twelve years together, Raquese surprised Vanessa with a helicopter ride over the city, and while taking in the beautiful view, he proposed. He followed the proposal with a fancy surprise dinner with all of their closest family and friends. Featuring thousands of deep crimson and cherry roses, highlighted with gold decor, the couple’s wedding boasted bold romance. Coterie Member and Wedding planner, Kawania Wooten, of Howerton+Wooten Events shares, “We are seeing more and more grooms actively participate in the development of the wedding day design and Raquese was no different. He shared how he wanted their wedding to be filled with bold designs, engaging entertainment, and really good food. And that’s exactly what their wedding was – bold.”. The Howerton+Wooten Events team along with the other talented vendors gave Vanessa and Raquese the most perfect wedding. Vanessa and Raquese comment, “Our ENTIRE wedding was our favorite part, it was literally a dream come true…”. Wanting to include both of their cultures, they incorporated elements of Vanessa’s El Salvadoran heritage and Raquese’s African-American culture through music and food.

I

t’s rare for people to experience love at first sight but when Shayna walked down the hall of her new law firm and saw James, she pretty much knew it was a done deal. These two lovebird lawyers decided that the next time they filed legal documents it would be to become husband and wife! After a surprise proposal during their vacation to Sint Maarten, the couple invited 66 of their closest loved ones to the iconic city of Lake Como in Italy for the wedding of their dreams. The spectacular multi-day celebration began with a welcome dinner at the century-old lakeside restaurant, Silvio, where guests dined on fine Italian cuisine. The bride-to-be and her bridal party started off on the right foot (literally) by wearing pink outfits that coordinated with Shayna’s own perfectly pink Jimmy Choo’s. With the arrival of their wedding day, two venues were the backdrop of what would be a wedding event to remember. After a pair of Lemoncello shots from a personalized shotski’s concluded their vows, it was time for the newlyweds and their guests to head to a show-stopping reception where they were treated to made-to-order fresh mozzarella (hand-pulled in insta-worthy fashion by a professional chef ), among other culinary delights, and the bride being serenaded by James’ rendition of Beyonce’s, “Brown skinned girl”. Guests enjoyed their final day of toasting the new bride and groom, along with their very own globetrotting giant duck pool float (lovingly named Harold), at an extravagant brunch which was every food lover's dream. A wood-fired pizza truck, gelato cart, and a customized Vespa bar ushered in the poolside finale of what was the perfect three-day wedding experience!

Bridesmaids gifts: I created my own bridesmaid proposal boxes, which consisted of (1) a Mark & Graham travel jewelry case monogrammed with their initials, containing a personalized gold bracelet inside; (2) a bottle of limoncello with a photo memory of me and the bridesmaid; (3) a leather passport holder personalized with their name and Italian writing on the inside asking, "will you go to Lake Como with me?" and (4) an Italian candle from Etsy. I also gifted them their bridesmaid dresses from Jenny Yoo and Fame & Partners. Finally, on the day of the wedding, I surprised each of my bridesmaids with a silk nightgown to get ready in, matching pink Quay sunglasses, and pearl earrings for the ceremony. Feeling especially grateful for my Maid of Honor Extraordinaire and wonderful mother, I gave them each a white hoodie, personalized with their initials and titles ‘Maid of Honor’ and ‘Mother of the Bride.’ Groomsmen gifts: James gifted his groomsmen bespoke tuxedos from Michael Andrews Bespoke with matching shoes (monogrammed with their initials on the heels), and cufflinks.

Gifts for one another: On the day of the wedding, I surprised James with (1) engraved cufflinks: one had the line "I've had the time of my life, and I owe it all to you" from our first dance song; the other said, "Ditto Dude" (code for I love you); and (2) a risqué yet tasteful boudoir album(!). James knew I would have a long morning getting ready with the girls, so he cleverly arranged to have several gifts delivered to me throughout the morning. It began with the most thoughtful handwritten letter, followed by teeth wipes (so I could drink and eat without worrying about photos), a "Mrs. Bryton" beach hat for our honeymoon, and a gorgeous diamond tennis bracelet. best memories... "There were too many incredible moments to pick only one, so I will share two. First, reading our own vows in front of our closest friends and family was a surreal moment that I could literally rewatch every day. I would also choose our first dance when we performed the final dance scene from Dirty Dancing to the song “(I've Had) The Time of My Life.” This was particularly entertaining because, despite my Jamaican background, I am known for having two left feet. Fortunately, James used to be a professional dancer — trained in ballet, modern, and ballroom dance— and he taught me the choreography in less than a week. Did I forget some of the steps halfway through and have to improvise? Sure did. But did we have the time of our lives smiling and laughing from the beginning til the end? Absolutely."- SHAYNA

James: "A wedding is only as much fun as the bride and groom are having. Have fun, not only because it's your wedding, but because guests feed off your energy!" Shayna: "Enjoy every minute of the day because it will 100% be one of the best days of your life, and it will be over in the blink of an eye. Not to mention, you are the only one who will notice the small things that will inevitably go wrong, so don’t sweat the small stuff. Oh, and hire a videographer. I know it's a common debate, but trust me!"

With the help of event designer SixteenFourteen Events, the daughter of music royalty, Ashley Lewis, and her husband J.R.’s wedding day was a dream come true! The elegant star-studded black tie wedding in Long Beach California featured guests dressed in chic all-black formal attire and with the help of their florist, Villa Floral Design, they incorporated Ashley’s desire to bring the beauty of nature indoors with oh-so-pretty cherry blossom trees. Before their romance started, Ashley and J.R. found themselves as friends on social media and continued to keep in touch with likes and comments on each other’s pages. Lo and behold, one day Ashley (who is the daughter of both Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Terry Lewis and R&B legend Karyn White) messaged J.R. about a new show that he was casting for. And just like that, the two were meeting up and bonding over a fabulous meal that made us say food is definitely their love language. After a proposal of a lifetime at the Riverfront Jazz Festival, on May 20th, 2023, they both said their forever vows in front of family and celebrity friends such as singer Cherelle, Morris Day, the Time’s very own Jerome Benton (who’s Ashley’s Uncle!), and comedian and actress Luenell. LA-based photographer Wanderlust Creatives took us behind the scenes of their wedding and then their reception concert, where the musical celebration was the most magical moment of all.

wedding highlights Dress code: Guests wore all black and it was so elegant! The first dance song: "Sweet Love," by Anita Baker, and the Father-daughter dance song, "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole. J.R. is a big fan of Anita Baker, and when we first started dating, I surprised him with tickets to see her perform live in concert. Whenever we hear "Sweet Love," I just want to grab him and start slow dancing. As for "Unforgettable," I love Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole! I knew this classic hit was fitting for our father-daughter dance. I felt the song was very classy, which is the vibe we were going for throughout the night. Advice for brides: Please properly vet your wedding planner before you hire them. It can honestly make or break the entire experience. Planning a wedding can be stressful, so don’t let the stress of perfection ruin your wedding. Ask your Fiancé what they envision for the wedding and make sure to incorporate both of your visions for the big day.

A

pastor and a pole dancer get married. Quite the unexpected pairing, right? However, for Dalijah, the Founder of Black Girls Pole and Co-Founder of SADA Wellness, and Willie, the Senior Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Pleasantville, New Jersey, their connection proved to be the perfect pairing and ultimately led to lifelong love! The couple first met outside the First Corinthian Baptist Church (FCBC) in Harlem in December 2013. Dalijah shares, “Willie was the new associate pastor at my church and after hearing him preach, I walked up to him to introduce myself and welcome him to NYC.” While Dalijah initially resisted Willie as a romantic interest (he was her Pastor, after all!) that initial introduction eventually led to their first date at one of Dalijah’s favorite food spots: Cafeteria. From that day forward, they knew they had found something special.

After starting a family together and building a strong foundation vested in faith and love, Willie surprised Dalijah by proposing at the exact spot outside the church where they first met. With love in his eyes, Willie said to her: “We have built a beautiful life with each other. You help me be my true authentic self and I can take off the mask. I want to ask you if you would please do life with me and Marry me!" Dalijah said yes without hesitation! The pair wed on September 8th, 2023, at the Cloud 9 Yacht Charter in New York. Surrounded by friends and family, their favorite moments were… EVERYTHING! From their first look to exchanging vows and performing their choreographed first dance, it was a day they’ll never forget!

O

n Sunday, August 27, 2023, Jaleesa Diaz and Eric Leite officially became Mr. and Mrs. Leite, declaring their commitment with an unplugged ceremony. Born and raised in New York ( Jaleesa is from the Bronx, and Eric is from Queens), the couple brought Black excellence to the top of Rockefeller Center with a beautiful wedding ceremony and reception held at 620 Loft & Garden Rooftop. The genuine love for this union was supported by all in attendance and celebrated with endless smiles! With phones away, this intimate wedding took place with 75 guests and runway-style seating, which made for a more intimate experience. All guests were able to sit close to the soon-to-be-spouses as they spoke from their hearts and kissed in the middle of the Big Apple. There was no formal bridal party; instead, friends of the bride and groom were invited to walk down the aisle as a group in whatever attire of their preference based on the dress code. This NYC wedding was nothing ordinary, taking place in the heart of the city among the skyline. To continue with everything unique and nothing too traditional, there were no speeches; instead, they provided an audio guestbook where guests could record messages for them, which all attendees loved! There wasn't a typical sit-down dinner either. On the contrary, Chef Coconut Cup created an elevated buffet-style setup in the garden, which he blew out of the park!

wedding highlights: What gifts did you give to your bridesmaids and groomsmen: We didn't have a formal bridal party. Didn't want that pressure on our friends. They showed up. Walked down the aisle and during the reception and we had a blast. Eric did, however, do a special dinner with his friends where he gifted them a groomsman box, custom made by his mother-in-law. Gifts for one another: My husband wasn't aware of this part lol and that's fine. I did, however, surprise him with a special pin for his tuxedo that included a photo of him and his grandmother. They were very close and I wanted him to feel her presence during the day. Ceremony entrance song: Eric walked out to "Int'l Players Anthem” by Outkast and I walked down the aisle to "You Are My Joy (Interlude)" by Faith Evans. It is a very beautiful song and he definitely cried when I walked out. First dance song: "I Want You Around" by Snoh Aalegra. It's the first song we ever danced to in our relationship.

I

n the summer of 2018, Shawn Oram was living his best life. Traveling and exploring the world, he wasn’t expecting to meet anyone. He certainly didn’t expect to fall in love at first sight. But then came Juliette... Standing at the check-in counter of the Grand Celebration Cruise ship, Shawn glanced across the room and glimpsed the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. “Her presence was radiating such an alluring aura I was immediately drawn in,” he recalled. “I knew right then and there that I needed to know who she was and everything about her.” After an initial failed attempt to talk to Juliette with her friends (who were celebrating her birthday!), Shawn was determined to speak to her. He and his friend, Tae, spent the rest of the night unsuccessfully searching the ship for her. The next day, they landed in the Bahamas. Shawn figured he would never see Juliette again. But fate had other plans! Out of countless resorts, Juliette and Shawn happened to stay at the same one. During their first interaction, they instantly connected over their shared Caribbean backgrounds. However, Juliette was still assessing her potential “Romeo.” She friendzoned him and added Shawn and Tae to their Girls Trip Group Chat. It wasn’t until later that night that her feelings changed. When none of her girlfriends wanted to see a dance show, Shawn stepped in to be her date. After the show, they walked to the beach and sat in a cabana by the ocean. They talked about everything: goals, family, beliefs… “We sat there all night as if nothing else mattered,” Shawn recalled wistfully. At the end of the night, they shared a goodnight kiss, sparking the beginning of their forever love. Looking back on that special night, Juliette shared, “I believe that not only did God give me what I prayed for by placing Shawn in my life, but I also feel that my late mother was my cupid on June 4, 2018, because we met on the same island where she was born.” On Juliette's 33rd birthday, Shawn surprised her with a romantic birthday staycation proposal, and three years later (on their fifth anniversary to the day they met in the Bahamas!), they said “I do” in a fitting “Romeo and Juliette” royal romance-themed wedding in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

However, I feel that everyone’s favorite of the evening was the Taste of Caribbean table, which included jerk marinated chicken, Bahamian conch fritters, calamari salad, black beans, and rice and plantain chips. Bridesmaids/groomsmen gifts: The bridesmaids received personalized robes, slippers, hangers, wine glasses. Also, wedding day Jewelry included earrings, bracelets, and hairpieces. The groomsmen received personalized money clips, beer openers, and cufflinks. First dance song: Tamia & Eric Benet: “Spend My Life with You," Alan Cave: “Se Pa Pou Dat” & Vybez Cartel's “Yuh Love.” Advice for brides: Quality over Quantity. Select your tribe carefully.
