Father’s Day Craft Ideas Stylish tie glasses case for Dad! Father’s Day is soon approaching, and while we believe you shouldn’t have to wait until Father’s Day to show dad just how much you appreciate him, now is a great time to spoil him and get creative by creating something yourself - repurpose one of his old ties into a stylish case for his glasses!

What you will need:

one second-hand necktie seam ripper fabric scissors ruler pen self-adhesive Velcro needle and thread

Instructions:

Step 1: Lay the necktie flat with the backside facing up. Measure and mark 17 inches in from the tip, then cut the tie widthwise. Discard the narrow end of the tie. Step 2: Use a seam ripper to open the seam along the back of the tie 6-7 inches to create a pouch. Step 3: Measure 8 inches in from the cut end and mark. Fold the tie at the mark toward the pointed tip and tuck under 1/2 inch of cut edge and pin. Step 4: Using small whipstitches along the top and sides, hand-sew the folded-over portion of tie to only the top layer of fabric beneath it. Step 5: Hand-stitch along the top and sides, securing the folded-over portion of tie to the top layer of fabric beneath it. Step 6: Fold the tip of the tie over to make a flap. Enjoying Father’s Day without Spending a Fortune The Importance of Father’s Day can be lost in modern society with much of the focus on what you are going to buy or do for Dad. Let’s not forget that the key to Father’s Day is to celebrate the contribution a father, significant other or father figure can add to a child’s life. For me; Father’s Day offers a day where the children can appreciate and show their appreciation for what the father’s does AND equally important it offers a day where most fathers can spend quality time with their child/children.

So here are some great ways to celebrate Father’s Day without having to spend a fortune. 1. Enjoy a day out on a boat

Australia offers a beautiful climate, many of us are close to rivers which present an ideal way to spend a day. Enjoy great weather and a fun day out with family. Find a location near you that offers boats for hire (without needing a boat licence) and take the family for a putt around the river either to enjoy a spot of fishing, snorkelling or just to have a relaxing day out on the water.

2. Fish n’ Chips at the beach

Again, we are blessed in this country, with many of us having beaches within a short driving distance. Take your family to the beach for the day to enjoy a bit of time out, build sandcastles and indulge in some Fish n’ Chips for lunch.

3. A family BBQ

BBQs are always a great way for families and extended families to share a good laugh, to enjoy each other’s company and some good food. If you don’t want to have the BBQ at your house, look at local parks around the area which have BBQ facilities as well as playgrounds to amuse the children.

4. Fishing with Dad

Fishing offers a great way for dad to bond with his kids and to enjoy some peace and quiet. Although it can be a little crazy at first, once the lines are set up and in the water, waiting for the fish can offer a great time for father and child to talk, bond and enjoy each other’s company.


5. Easy Meals

Whether dad is the primary cook or not, a day off cooking will give both mum and dad more time to enjoy the day together. Without having to worry about preparing meals, you can go out and enjoy the day without having to come home and get dinner ready. Slow cooked dinners are also a great option where you can set and forget; go and enjoy the day out and come home to a delicious meal.

6. Peace and Quiet

Dad’s may equally enjoy just having a day of doing nothing. No nagging, chores, having to fix anything or playing games. If that is what your dad is craving, consider a way to relax together – perhaps watch a movie or his favourite sport together. Alternatively, you could take the kids outside for a play while dad has a bit of peace and rest time to himself. You can also spoil him by bringing him a drink or snacks so that he doesn’t have to get up and try to enjoy some quality time together.

Caramelized Red Onion Bacon Tart Relish

3 tablespoons olive oil 6 large red onions, peeled and finely sliced 2/3 cup, packed, CSR Dark Brown Sugar 1 tablespoon yellow mustard seeds 3 garlic cloves, crushed 2 bay leaves 1 cup red wine vinegar 3 teaspoons sea salt 2 teaspoons smoked sweet paprika

Tart

4 rashers rind less lean bacon, cut in 2cm slices 1tablespoon fresh thyme leaves or 2 teaspoons dry thyme 1½cups grated mature cheddar cheese 3 tablespoons ricotta cheese 1 lightly beaten egg sea salt and freshly ground pepper. 8 sheets filo pastry 50g butter, melted 1 tablespoon chopped parsley (optional)

Method - Relish

1. On a low heat, in a large deep frying pan add the olive oil and sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15 min or until the onion is soft and just changing colour. 2. Add the garlic, cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Sprinkle 1 tbs of the CSR Dark Brown Sugar on to the onions and cook stirring constantly for a few seconds till the sugar is bubbling and dark. 3. Turn the heat to medium. Add the red wine vinegar and all the remaining relish ingredients. 4. Bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to medium low and cook stirring occasionally until nearly all the liquid has evaporated and the onions are soft and jammy. Remove the bay leaves. 5. Spoon the onion relish straight into hot sterilized jars. Seal while hot. NOTE: Makes 2x 200g jars Preparation time, 20 minutes. Cooking time, 30-35 minutes. Keep refrigerated for up to 2 months.


Method - Tart 1. Preheat oven to 180oC and line a large baking tray with silicon sheet or baking paper. 2. In small bowl mix together the ricotta, ½ cup of the grated cheese, ½ the thyme and the egg. Mix well and season generously with sea salt and pepper. 3. Working quickly, lay 1 sheet of filo pastry on the lined tray. Brush all over with melted butter. Lay another sheet on top and again brush with butter. Repeat with the remaining sheets of filo. Brush again with melted butter. 4. In a long wide oval, in middle of the buttered filo pastry, spread the ricotta egg mix evenly. 5. Scatter generously with remaining grated cheese, thyme leaves and bacon slices. 6. Roll the edges of the pastry all round the filling to form a raised border. Brush the borders with the remaining butter. 7. Bake, for 10 minutes in the preheated oven at 180oC, cover with a sheet of baking paper, reduce the heat to 160oC and bake for a further 10 minutes or until the filo pastry and cheese is light golden brown. 8. Dollop all over, with teaspoons of the caramelized red onion relish, and bake for a further 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. 9. Serve warm sprinkled with chopped parsley. Serves 4. Preparation time 15 minutes. Cooking time 25 minutes. Tasting notes: CSR dark brown sugar adds a soft rich sweetness with deep caramel tones to the delicious easy red onion relish we use in this recipe. Follow the link to find the recipe. Pineapple Chili Sauce Ingredients

1 can Pineapple chunks 4 Ghost Chilli’s - seeds removed 1 Onion 1 carrot ¼ cup raisins 4 garlic cloves Zest and juice of 1 lime or lemon 2cm Ginger or 1 tsp ground ginger ½ tsp turmeric ½ tsp cumin ¼ tsp cinnamon 2 Tbsp sugar 1 Tbsp salt 1½ cups Apple Cider Vinegar

Method:

Place all ingredients except the vinegar into a food processor and blend – to your desired liking – puree or a little chunky. Pour mixture into a pot, add vinegar and simmer for 15 minutes. If needed, blend again. Using a funnel, pour the chili sauce into sterilised hot bottles or jars that have a good seal. Sauce flavour is best when left for a week then used.


Chorizo Baked Beans Ingredients

2 tbs olive oil 2 smoked chorizo sausages, cut in 1cm thick slices 1 large onion, peeled and finely diced 2 sticks celery, finely diced 2 large carrots, peeled and diced 2 medium cloves garlic, crushed 1.5L of water 1 x 400g can crushed tomatoes ½ tsp ground cumin ½ tsp ground cinnamon 2 bay leaves 2 tbs CSR Treacle Syrup 1 small smoked ham hock 375g dried white or cannellini beans 2 tsp Tabasco sauce (optional) 1 tbs chopped parsley, to serve

Method:

1. In a large heavy bottomed pan or casserole dish, heat oil on a medium heat and fry the sliced chorizos on both sides. Remove the chorizo from the pan and set aside. 2. Fry the onions in the pan with the olive oil and juices released by the chorizo, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and transparent. 3. Add the diced celery, carrots and crushed garlic, and cook for a further 1-2 mins. 4. Pour in the water, add the tomatoes, spices, bay leaves, CSR treacle, ham hock, dried beans and Tabasco if you want some added spice. Season with salt and pepper and bring to the boil. 5. Cover with a lid, reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for about 1 hour. 6. Add chorizo and cook for another hour, stirring occasionally (add a little more water if required) until the beans are just tender and the sauce is thickened. 7. Remove the ham hock, discard the skin, shred the meat from the bone and return the ham meat to the beans. Ladle into bowls and serve with chopped parsley and crusty bread. Serves 6. Preparation time 30 minutes. Cooking time 2 hours Tasting notes. The dark rich flavor and slightly smoky aroma of CSR Treacle balances and enhances the slightly acidic tomatoes and smoked meats in this tasty bean dish.


Pulled Beef Pie Ingredients

1 Tbsp Olive Oil Around 500 g pulled balsamic beef 2 garlic cloves, diced 2 onions diced 2 carrots, diced 5-6 mushrooms, diced 1 cup peas 1 tsp thyme 3 tablespoon plain flour 1 cup beef stock 3/4 cup red wine 2 Tablespoons tomato paste Salt and Pepper 12 Puff Pastry Sheets 80g butter, melted Sesame seeds (optional)

Method:

1. In a large pan, add oil onion and garlic, cooking for 3 minutes until soft. Add carrots and mushrooms, cooking for a further minute. 2. Add wine and allow to reduce for 1-2 minutes. 3. Add thyme and flour, stirring and cooking together for a minute, then add meat and peas. 4. Add stock and tomato paste, stirring together well and season to your liking. Simmer for 10-20 minutes to thicken sauce, remember sauce will also get thicker once cool. Allow to cool. 5. When ready, preheat oven to 180 degrees. 6. Using spray oil or butter, grease a large casserole dish. 7. Using a chopping board, place one sheet of puff pastry onto it. Brush with butter and add another puff pastry sheet on top. Repeat to make your pastry 2 sheets high. 8. Place pastry into casserole dish, being careful to ensure you leave enough hanging over the sides to fold back over to close the pie up. Tip: Cutting one stack in half and placing diagonally on either edge can give you the three points you need to close up the pie. 9. Once you have covered the bottom of your dish, fill with the cool meat and sauce. Repeat the puff pastry process on the top, brushing with butter and sealing all the openings. 10. Brush the top with butter and sprinkle sesame seeds over. 11. Bake for 30 minutes until puff pastry is cooked and golden. 12. Serve and enjoy! Lorie


Flapping Good Flapjacks or Yummy Pancakes Although the instant pancake shaker mixers are so simple; when you have a load of hungry children Lorie’s Flapjack or Pancake recipe is quick and easy. Utilising few ingredients and with a recipe to feed and fulfil 4 -8 children, it only takes a few minutes to create and enjoy.

Ingredients

2 cups Self Raising Flour 2 eggs, lightly beaten 3 tsp vanilla essence 2 pinches of salt 1 1/2 cups milk 2 tsp sugar

Method: • Add Flour, Salt and Sugar to a bowl and mix together. • Add eggs, vanilla essence and milk, beating or whisking together well, making sure there are no pockets of flour that aren’t mixed in. • Get a spoonful of mixture and lift above bowl and slowly pour back into bowl to judge thickness. If needed add more milk slowly to get the desired consistency. • Heat a non-stick pan (medium hot) and brush lightly with oil. Add a dollop of the mixture and either leave it thicker for flapjacks or manoeuvre the mixture around pan around the pan to spread it more evenly and thinly. • Watch the pancake cook and once there are bubbles forming throughout the mixture, flip and cook the other side for 1-2 minutes. If the bubbles come yet the pancake is still too runny, turn down the heat. • Transfer cooked pancake to another plate and start the process again with the next pancake. • Serve and enjoy with Nutella, Jam, Cinnamon Sugar, Butter and more! This recipe is perfect for Flapjacks (the thicker smaller pancakes) however with additional milk you can thin the mixture to create a fantastic Pancake.


Beer Battered Fish We love beer battered fish and this recipe is so easy and simple. Dads will love the flavour, Mums will love the simplicity and kids will eat it!

Ingredients:

1 kg Fish (your choice. We love Sea Bream, Perch, and Whiting) 3/4 cup of self-raising flour 150 ml (or a bit more) of full-strength beer 1-2 tsp Salt 1-2 tsp pepper Deep Fryer or Hot oil in a pot

Method:

1. Put the Flour, Salt and Pepper into a bowl and mix together 2. Add the beer slowly in batches, whisky briskly to remove any lumps. 3. Stop when the mixture reaches a creamy consistency 4. Dip fish into batter to coat thoroughly 5. Add fish to deep fryer or hot oil to fry for 4-5 minutes

Apple Fritters

Ingredients:

1 cup flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 egg, beaten 1/2 cup milk 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 cup peeled and diced apple cinnamon and sugar, for rolling (1/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon combined) oil, for frying

Directions:

1. In a deep pot, bring 2-3 inches of oil to 375 degrees over medium heat. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. 3. Stir in the egg and milk until the batter is smooth. 4. Toss the diced apples in the lemon juice and add to the batter. Stir to combine. 5. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side. 6. Remove to a paper towel lined plate to drain for a few minutes. 7.
