Does a toddler need We believe toddlers want and need to be introduced to simple, basic, clear rules by their parents. Toddlers are beginning to understand themselves as their own separate person with their own thoughts and feelings. During this stage, it is vital a toddler has a clear set of rules, or operating procedures to help them feel safe and to help keep them safe. Basic rules guide your toddler’s behaviour and sets the scene for them to begin to know what is expected of them both within the home and outside within society. Rules work best when they are short and to the point. Start by saying exactly what you want rather than what you don’t want. Rules can be extended and developed as your child develops and in keeping with the behaviours that you want to work on. The following is simply a list of common rules and how to phrase them. Caroline’s Angels Top Rules Keep your hands and feet to yourself – also known as – keep hands feet and objects to yourself • Recommended for toddlers who use often use physical touch in a rougher way with other children, for example, hitting. If your child was a ‘biter’ you could alter this to “Keep your hands, feet and teeth to yourself” • Each time you are preparing to play alongside others remind your child of this simple rule. Make it like a mantra that you sing or repeat before play dates. • Make sure they have space around other children. Often play spaces can be crowded making it hard to apply the “no hands” rules. Role model making space near or around your child, show him how to keep about arms length from others and share space. • If any physicality occurs, move in close near your child and demonstrate how to move away and make space. If you need to apply a logical consequence and move away from others for a short period or go home early

4

We hold hands when we leave the house • Especially useful if you have a more independent child whose tendency is to move away from you • Make sure as you are preparing to leave that you discuss the expectation that we hold hands. Do not leave the house until you are holding hands. • Distract your child with, “Which hand would you like to hold today? Left or right” this way they feel like they have a choice and not holding hands isn’t one of them! • Place a cut out of holding hands on the exit to the house. Each time you approach the exit as your child to tell you what the holding hands sign means. That way they think they thought of the rule all by themselves. • If you are out and they won’t hold your hand the consequence would be that they have to ride in a pram or perhaps leave an event early.

rules? Oh Yes.. We sit to eat our meals • Especially useful for children who are distracted easily from meals and get up and down or move around the house with food. • Let your child know before each meal that the rule is “We sit to eat”. Then distract them with the idea of where would like to choose to sit. Again, the distraction can help to buffer from the idea that they may not want to sit, as that isn’t an option. Offer the choice between 2 or 3 dining chairs, or high chair or low table. • Wait for your child to be sitting before you serve their food. A hungry child will always sit! Role model that you sit as well. We use inside voices inside the house • Recommended if you have a toddler who has a loud, shouting or high pitched voice • role model using a quiet voice • As your child’s voice raises lower and continue to lower your voice until you are speaking either in a whisper or not speaking at all. • When your child speaks to you in a volume that you are happy with, then reply back in a normal speaking volume Beds are for sleeping on (or sitting on) • Recommended if your child has a tendency to jump on the bed • This could also be adjusted to “Beds are for sleeping and chairs are for sitting” if they jump on furniture • If your child is an active jumper it would be helpful to provide a place where your toddler could jump safely and appropriately, cushioned area or trampoline • Each time your child attempts to jump on the bed (or couch) remind them that beds are for sleeping and guide them to another activity to distract them. • if needed move them to another area away from the beds or lounges

5

Food goes in your mouth! Or stays on your plate • Especially useful for children who test boundaries by spitting their food. They may do this to see what reaction it gets • Logical consequence is meal time is stopped temporarily, then resumed and then if behaviour continues meal discontinued We use listening ears for stop signals when we play outdoors • Like holding hands, we when are outdoors this rule is especially useful for children who are more independent and have a strong tendency to run in open spaces • Logical consequence may be leaving park early Balls are for throwing outside • Useful if your child tends to throw household objects • Important to provide plenty of balls and a safe place to throw them to redirect the behaviour appropriately • Logical consequence could be that ball/toy/ object is not accessible for a short period of time For more information on toddler behaviour please look at our existing library of resources – E books and webinar recordings or contact us directly at www.carolinesangels.com.au

How to host the perfect Baby Shower for an overwhlemed mum to be

Pregnancy can be both a time of excitement and a time of uncertainty and change in a new mum’s life. New mums have a lot on their plate and while a Baby Shower is a joyous occasion celebrated by friends and family some mums can feel overwhelmed in the lead up to the event. Friends and family can provide emotional and psychological support by reminding the expectant mum that she is not alone and relieve any added pressure of hosting a Baby Shower.

One in two Australian mums held a baby shower for their child, according to fresh research* released by comfy nappy brand, BabyLove. The survey of over 1,000 Australian women revealed first time mums were the most likely to have a baby shower. If new to pregnancy, women are going to experience life changing transition to being a parent for the first time. This is one of the most significant transitions they can experience during their life. This is one of the main reasons why first time mums are likely to make more of a fuss so friends can be mindful of this and work together to offer support and guidance to new mums and take over the planning of the Baby Shower. When I had my first baby shower, it was organised by my sister and sister-in-law. It was an opportunity for the women in both my family and my husband’s family to come together with my closest friends to provide support and reassurance as I mentally prepared for the transition to motherhood. They didn’t let me lift a finger and this is the best suggestion to help support an overwhelmed mum!

digital invitation templates and fun games. This is a great way for friends to show their support by taking over the planning and hosting element and its good practice for new mums to learn to lean on loved ones for support from time to time. Being a mum is one of the most important roles we will ever have. With that pressure comes apprehension and anxiety, as well as anticipation and excitement. It’s very normal to experience a roller coaster of emotions during this time, especially when you also consider the hormones running through your system! This is the perfect time for friends and family to take control and offer support to encourage new mums to practice self-care and take the time out to ensure the planning is taken care of to relieve any added stress or worry. After all a healthy happy mum equals a healthy happy baby! Written for BabyLove, by Leanne Hall, Clinical Psychologist and mum

Natural ways to fight cold and flu season The cooler months are notorious for sick days, sniffles, and if we are very unlucky, a cold or flu, but luckily, if we get our nutrition right we can avoid winter nastiness altogether. Here are some of the best foods to incorporate into your diet this winter. These foods are all naturally rich in important nutrients we need to help bolster our immune system to help stave off infection in the cooler months.

INCREASE YOUR VITAMIN C INTAKE

TEA

Consuming the right teas can be a great way to get the essential nutrients you need for a healthy immune system. Furthermore, tea is warm and soothing, and it gives you the opportunity to sit for a moment and relax, to help your body heal and repair. The best ingredients for good health in winter include anti-inflammatory ingredients such as 100% certified organic ginger, lemongrass, lemon peel, turmeric and lemon myrtle and healing ingredients including Echinacea, spearmint, elderflower, ginger, elderberry and lemongrass. These herbs are perfect for soothing sore throats and fighting colds and flu. You can add a teaspoon of manuka honey for it’s super antibacterial action. A perfect remedy for sore throats. When choosing a tea you want to look for an organic tea, and one free from any added flavourings or sweeteners. If you buy tea bags you should look at the type of tea bag your using. Most paper tea bags are blenched, and silk pyramid infusers contain plastic. So when you submerge your tea bag in boiling water you are are getting traces of chemicals you definitely don’t want in your healthy cup of tea. Choosing an organic loose leaf tea is a great option. Or if you prefer a tea bag some companies sell their teas in healthy natural biodegradable tea bags.

Eat a variety of vitamin C rich fruits such as oranges, lemons, kiwi fruit and berries. Vitamin C is a powerful immune enhancer with anti-viral action, which will help protect you from coming down with a cold or flu this winter.

SEAWEED

Seaweed is a highly nutritious superfood that contains extraordinary health-promoting compounds. Seaweed helps boost the immune system and reduces the risk of cold and flu. There are many different types of seaweed including kelp, nori, and arame, which you can purchase from health food stores and supermarkets.

SHITAKE MUSHROOMS

Shitake mushrooms enhance the immune systems ability to combat infections including colds and flu. Soak dried mushrooms for around 30 minutes, and then add thin slices to dishes such as soups, stirfries, or casseroles.

MISO

Miso is a highly nutritious food that contains numerous health-promoting benefits. Unpasteurised organic miso contains active lactobacillus, a bacteria beneficial for improving digestion and strengthening the immune system. Beneficial bacteria like that found in miso help promote the proliferation of ‘friendly’ bacteria in the bowel, which plays a big role in our immune health. The beneficial ADD GARLIC TO YOUR MEALS bacteria present in unpasteurized miso are killed Adding garlic to meals is one of the best ways by prolonged cooking at high temperatures, so add to ward off colds and flu. Garlic contains potent miso to preparations just before removing them from immune strengthening and anti-viral compounds. 7 Tips for Healthier Children this Winter

Nothing adds to a busy woman’s stress levels more than a sick child.

As a mother, you think about your children all the time, that’s normal. But you naturally worry about them more when they’re sick. With sleepless nights, timeout from childcare or school, time off work for you and the worry that it will spread to the whole family, your stress levels can go through the roof! Sickness can certainly take its toll and it’s exhausting for everyone! The immune system is an integral part of your child’s health and protects them from harm. It’s on constant guard 24 hours a day, all year round. Many things can affect your child’s immune system like poor gut health, exposure to toxins, picky eating, lack of sleep, lack of exercise and being exposed to other children and their germs. A little work now could save you so much time later. So, if your kids are getting sick with regular colds and flus, middle ear, or are susceptible to eczema, asthma, wheezing or sneezing, make it a priority to boost up their immunity and bring them back into balance well before winter runs them down. Boost your child’s immunity by: • increasing fresh fruits and vegetables, protein and healthy fats – cut out processed foods and high sugar foods

Photo courtesy of Pixabay.com • making sure they get enough sleep – rest is vital to good immunity • encouraging more outdoor activity and less screen time – outside play, even when it’s cold, can strengthen the immune system and promote healthy physical development • supplementing herbs such as Albizia (helpful for allergies, asthma, sinus and eczema), Echinacea (great for boosting immune function), Astragalus (for anti-viral protection of colds/ flus), Elderberry (can stop virus replication in its tracks), Olive Leaf (well known for its antimicrobial action) • using lots of herbs in cooking – like garlic, thyme, rosemary, ginger (great immune boosting actions and tasty as well) • boosting with vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C and Zinc – these nutrients provide the building blocks of the immune system and play a crucial role in regulating immunity • making probiotics a necessary part of a winter supplement regime – about 70% of immune function is dependent on the health of the gut. It is now known that supplementing with a multi-strain probiotic formula can decrease the risk of common infectious conditions in children (and adults – so don’t forget yourself). Children are constantly exposed to bugs and viruses, particularly in childcare and at school. Don’t wait until they are sick to work on their immunity. Set them up for a healthier, happier winter with less sickness and more play time. Written by Catherine McCoy. Managing Winter Eczema Asteatotic eczema is sometimes referred to as ‘winter eczema’ or ‘winter itch’. It probably comes from the fact that asteatotic eczema becomes worse in winter months. The cause is not known but asteatotic eczema has been linked to a decrease in the oils of the skins surface, low humidity, over-cleansing of the skin, hot baths or showers, scrubbing the skin and vigorous towel drying. Below are my tips on how you can manage Winter Eczema.

Humidity

Humidity is a technical term for the amount of moisture in the air. Very dry air (low humidity) can extract moisture from the skin, and make eczema worse. There are ways to prevent air in our homes and work places becoming so dry. One way is to invest in a humidifier which is a piece of equipment that puts moisture back into the air. You can buy humidifiers from your local pharmacy.

Maintain an even temperature It is difficult to maintain an even temperature

and humidity, especially when we are asleep or when we get dressed. However, understanding why this happens is the first step in reducing the itch-scratch- itch cycle associated with sudden changes in temperature. Keeping each room in the house at a comfortable temperature can help, so that – as we move from one room to the next – we are not experiencing fluctuating temperatures. In addition, try to maintain the temperature at a reasonable level – not too hot.

Dust Mite Exposure During winter your exposure to dust mites may increase because

you are indoors more and wearing more layers of clothing. In winter a person is exposed to more allergens such as the dust mite. These can be hiding in the bedding, carpet and woollen garments. Spending more time indoors and wearing more clothing would expose the skin to more of the dust mite antigen and increase the inflammation that accounts for the symptoms of eczema.

Water and Oils In winter we tend to forget about our water consumption. We need to remind ourselves to drink the appropriate amount of water for our kg weight and also take the necessary oils such as evening primrose, flaxseed and fish oils for our skin. Attention needs to be drawn to children who do not necessarily know when or how often they should drink a glass of water. Bathing Do not over bath or shower in winter. Excessive use of water, especially hot water in

winter will dry your skin and you will end up with the ‘prickly’ feeling. Short bathing and only once a day for adults and less for children will benefit your skin in winter. I always keep a box of taco shells in the cupboard and then they can be filled with leftover mince. Either use the mince with its current flavour or add taco seasoning to it and cook again to season and warm the mince. Then serve with the heated shells, chopped tomato, lettuce, cheese and whatever else you want.

Gozleme

I love Gozleme and they offer a great way to utilise leftover mince. Simply make the dough and fill it with the mince. When creating these I also make some Spinach and Feta ones so there is a variety and often the amount of mince leftover may not be enough for everyone.

Mince lettuce wraps

Turn your mince into a San Choy Bow meal. If there isn’t enough for the whole family you could easily cook a few gyoza’s, spring rolls or pork buns as a great accompaniment. All you need is an Iceberg lettuce to create the lettuce cups. Then simply add your meat mixture and desired sauce. Other - - - - - - - -

Roasted Root Veg & Quinoa Hash with Poached Eggs IThis would be a great hangover cure and makes a nice change from the usual breakfast/brunch suspects. Why not have roasted roots and quinoa for dinner, and then you will have leftovers for hash the next day. When fried, the quinoa creates a great crusty and slightly chewy texture. So delicious with poached eggs and sriacha sauce on top.

Cheesy Chicken & Quinoa Burgers These burgers are great for using up leftover roast chicken. Very versatile, they can be served as a main course with salad, as actual burgers in buns with all the trimmings, as an appetiser for dinner guests, or as healthy finger foods for kids. Make them as big or small as you like. Hidden veggies can also be finely chopped and added: really anything you would like. That makes this also a great recipe to please picky eaters. Quinoa when fried creates the most irresistible texture that is crunchy and chewy at the same time. Ingredients 2 cups quinoa, cooked (1 cup uncooked) 1 cup leftover roast chicken, shredded 1 spring onion, finely chopped 1/2 cup grated cheese 2 eggs 2 Tbsp flour 1/2 tsp each salt and pepper 1 Tbsp olive oil

Ingredients 1 cup quinoa, cooked 2 cups root vegetables such as fennel, sweet potato, carrot, beet, onion olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 head of garlic eggs, 1-2 per person, plus 1 tbsp white vinegar for poaching liquid Instructions If you haven’t already roasted the root vegetables: Toss with a little olive oil, balsamic vinegar and salt and pepper generously. Roast in a hot oven for 35-45 minutes until caramelised on the outside and soft in the middle. 20 minutes into the cooking time, add the whole head of garlic. (first chop off a small section from the top, drizzle oil into the head of garlic) When cooled, squeeze the garlic over the cooked vegetables and loosely toss together.

To make the hash: Heat a large frying pan and a deep pot of water on the stove. Add white Instructions 1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and let mixture vinegar to the water. 5 Meal Ideas with Pulled Beef Using a simple Blade Roast and our Balsamic Pulled Beef recipe we came up with 5 different and fun ways to enjoy the pulled beef. Using a slow cooker, get a large blade roast and create your pulled beef. Determine which meal you want first and then set aside the sauce and leftover meat for a meal with the leftovers during the week and freeze the rest for quick, easy ready-made meals that only need to be warmed up.

Pulled Beef with Mash

Cooked your balsamic pulled beef in the slow cooker. Serve with mash and your choice of a salad or veggies.

Pulled Beef Burgers

Add your pulled beef and burger toppings to a quality roll and dinner is done!

Pulled Beef Pizza

Pizza offers a great way to use leftovers. Creating a pizza with pulled beef is delicious. Simply make or buy a pizza base, add passata and then top with your pulled beef and other pizza toppings. Our favourites include: - Pulled beef, salamai, roast pumpkin & cheese - Pulled beef, anchovies, artichokes, olives & cheese Cook the pizza’s in the oven, serve and enjoy.

Pulled Beef Ragu

Perhaps one of the easiest options. Simply cook your pasta as per the instructions on the packet. While the pasta is cooking, warm up the leftover pulled beef and sauce in a large pan/wok. Drain pasta and add to the meat and sauce with a little bit of olive oil. Mix through thourally and serve.

Pulled Beef Pie

A new favourite! Making the pie is relatively easy and quick enough; 5 minutes to create the pastry, 30 minutes’ rest time, 15 mins to blind bake and then you are ready to add your pulled beef, seal the pie and cook for another 30 or so minutes. We also cheated and created a pulled beef pastry bag- delicious! Using store bought puff pastry sheets, add the pulled beef to the middle of the puff pastry sheet, brush the egg mixture on either side and seal the pastry bag. Repeat to create the desired number of bags. Cook in an oven on 180 degrees until golden and fluffy (2030min). Egg Mixture (1 egg plus 1 teaspoon water mixed together)

5 Ways to be Organised for the Working family It’s hard enough running a busy household with kids, but an even bigger nightmare when it’s time to return to work. Even more responsibility, but with less time and less energy... The only way to survive week to week (or minute to minute) is to get and stay organised! As the old saying goes ‘prevention is better than cure’. When organising a house with kids this rings true and it’s best to start young – very young. Set up systems for them from the beginning so they understand a couple of rules; First, every item (toys, clothes, books etc) should have a home, and Second, when they have finished with one activity, put it away before getting another. Children actually thrive off routine and structure. If their environment is set up to their development level they can gain independence and confidence. 1) Limit the amount of toys on display in your kid’s room - Instead of their room looking like a toy shop explosion, it’s best to have only a couple of low shelves with several activities spaced out on them. Their other toys can be put into baskets under the bed or on the top shelf in the wardrobe and rotated every couple of weeks. If they’re surrounded by too many options at once, it all becomes overwhelming.

4) Chore Charts – Following on from the third tip, when your kids are school aged, have a chore chart that’s easily visible either in their room or near the kitchen. Items like ‘take out the recycling’ or ‘unload the dishwasher’ means you’re all working as a team keeping the home organised. At the end of each week if they’ve completed their chores they can be rewarded with whatever will keep them motivated (which includes pocket money).

5) Have systems for paperwork – This is something that comes into your home every day whether it is school newsletters, bills, party invites, tax paperwork etc. You need to have 2) Teach your kids to put away – As soon an area where this comes into the house, a as they’re old enough to walk, they can pack system for actioning it and then a system for up after themselves (with some of your help). once it’s been actioned (filing, recycling, off to The younger they learn this is part of the playing accountant). process, the earlier they learn what is expected If you are struggling with organising and of them. the amount of ‘stuff’ in your home, don’t be too disheartened as there are Professional 3) Involve them in housework – Don’t Organisers throughout the country who would automatically do everything for your kids. Work at Home Mum - Toddler Style

Being a stay at home Mum sang out as a great time to venture into the online world. I loved being mummy but also craved my own time, a little bit of ‘me’, my own project to work on… So I started up my own online business, Avidiva. Now my baby has grown into more of a toddler, life gets even more hectic, so how do we make it work? Here’s what a typical work at home mum day looks like for us… toddler style! My hungry little boy is my alarm clock around 6am every day. We have our morning feed then head out for a walk, after much protesting around nappy changing, dressing, sunscreen, hats (you know the drill!). We head out to see the birds and the sea, sometimes have a quick play at the park and coffee for mummy. We find this is the best way to start our day… fresh air, sunshine, and caffeine, get a little inspired or at the very least, dust off the cobwebs! We head back for some breakfast, I manically write a to do list and have a sneaky peak at emails, just to check there’s nothing super urgent. We have a play and an attempt at a tidy up… or more like a throw all the toys out and beg mummy ‘til she holds my hands so I can run around the house and climb the stairs!! We read a book before it’s nap time, and then it’s all go for me… make the most of every single minute!

After a big clean up, it’s story time and (the hope of!) nap time. Recently this hasn’t really been happening… it’s one where I am persevering but Mr Wriggle Pants has different ideas, like trying to climb out of his cot, or rolling from one end to the other and back! I’m blaming the appearance of molars (and hoping it’s not the transition into only one nap a day... when will I get any work done then?!) With the baby monitor and a cup of tea close by, it’s time for round two of emails, orders and marketing for me. Sometimes it’s a time to write (or start!) an article, do some research into a new idea, line or product, or maybe prepare for some local markets.

Computer on, reply to wholesalers, answer any customer enquiries, get in touch with advertisers, update social media. Get distracted by ogling gorgeous baby products and wondering which new line I can add next! Check any new orders, pick and wrap ready for their new homes, update the website with stock levels and add new products. Time goes far too quickly and I finally jump in the shower before (or usually just as!) Mr Wriggle Pants stirs. After willing him through the monitor to resettle, I get him up with a big cuddle.

After naptime (if we’ve had success), it’s quickly downhill towards cranky time. We mostly stay around the house though, maybe have a chat with Grannie on Skype, start getting dinner ready, and hope Daddy finishes work on time!! In between the dinner-bath-bed routine (by this I mean attempted ‘dinner’, ending in a rice cracker), I try to wrap up all the things I’ve started throughout the day. Mr Wriggle Pants loves his bath time with Daddy, and I love this time to see if I can cross anything off my to-do list. A very tired little boy is ready for his bed around 7pm, after We rush around to get everything ready to go… his evening feed and a bedtime book. Mostly coaxing Mr Wriggle Pants into the car with the promise of a snack. We drop off any local orders and evenings are for a catch up with hubby over head down to the post office to send parcels on their dinner, and a wind down with much needed wine and chocolate! Then it’s time to end the day, get way. We’re always out and about somewhere! Mr Wriggle Pants is fascinated by other people, so much some rest, and be ready to start all over again… whenever my very own personalised alarm clock to see, happy to be exploring and learning. wakes me!! We head back for lunch. This is usually a battle, Written by Caroline, mum to playful Alfie who with food mostly swiped on the floor, offered to the runs Avidiva, a handpicked baby boutique, cat, pinged across the room or just mushed in his hands. Exercise & fitness trackers. You see them everywhere and for me they posed a big question – are they worth it? I had been debating for a long time on whether to get an exercise tracker or not. As the price is quite hefty and the motivation was more from curiosity, I keep putting it off yet secretly kept wanting one. Eventually I decided to get one. So here are my thoughts on exercise trackers.

Fast, Effective Hairstyles

Over the last few weeks I've been experimenting with my hair. This is a huge statement for me, because my hair is always pulled high in a swinging ponytail, or on the odd occasion I do leave the house and decide it warrants putting in effort, it's loose & poker straight...I thought I didn't have time for any other styles, and ok I also had no inclination! I've since learnt that it's actually really nice to see my hair worn a different way, and even nicer not to be suffering from continual headaches from having my hair pulled tight. I've put together a list and have taken some photos to give some other busy mums some inspiration and ideas; and we'd really love to hear yours! Share them with us here

Number 1: The Stylish Ponytail.

There are times as a mum when you simply need to wear your hair pulled back! To take your ponytail to the next level in a flash, I recommend using a hot brush hot air styler (basically a blow waver with a rotating hair brush attachment). Start by brushing your hair back with your regular brush, as high on the back of your head as you like: I personally like it quite high up (think "I Dream of Jeannie"). Fasten with your hair elastic. Next, if you have a fringe, use the hot brush with the rolling motion moving away from your forehead and down, to gently pull forward any short hair not secured in the elastic. Run the hot brush through your fringe once or twice from beneath for volume. Next, using the hot brush vertically, allow the brush to catch your ponytail from the very top at the elastic, and move slowly downward to the tip of your hair. This creates a nice, slightly curled look which ensures the ends don't begin to knot the second you leave the bathroom! The whole process takes 5-10 minutes, and makes the world of difference compared to scraped back hair lacking volume and that salon feel.

Number 2: The Straight Part

This is my second favourite hairstyle. Having very fine and straight hair that likes to part down the left in a perfect straight line, means more often than not my hair sits flat against my head. I don't like the lacklustre feel, and so tend to avoid wearing it down. However, I have found that with little effort, this can be overcome to have pretty, soft-looking hair. Firstly, brush all of your hair back away from your face, then use a comb to create a centre part. Don't stress if your hair won't sit flat or part perfectly: it doesn't matter because you won't see the part! Use your hair brush to brush out any knots. Next, run your straightener through your hair from the part to the ends. Using your comb once more, section your hair from approx. a third of the way from your forehead hairline back, and from about in line with your pupils on either side. This is the segment you need to pin back over your part. Brush out straight, pull back over your part, twist twice and secure to the back of your hair with a bobby pin. Use your straightener slightly on its side to gently create a wave inward to add some shape around your face. You now have a stylish hairstyle that doesn't take long and suits pretty much any attire! You can also dress it up by using a pearl length clip or butterfly clip (if you have thick hair) in place of the bobby pin.

For Mums Number 3: Hairbands are my Friend It's amazing the difference a hairband can make! Particularly if you have a selection of styles and/ or colours. If you're running very low on time but need just that something a little extra, throw on a hairband to maximise your hairstyle! Whether you're wearing it up or down, a hairband is always well suited and easy to get right. I have a few plain black hairbands of different thicknesses that are my fall-backs, and I have to say they've always managed to pull me through! :)

Number 4: Stylishly Tousled If your hair is simply not playing the game; don't fight it, go with it. Using a can of dry hair shampoo, spray on the roots of your hair and rub through with the tips of your fingers to muss it up. Standing up, allow your hair to fall then using a hair straightener, use partially vertical and rotate slowly in a slight spiral to allow your hair to curl and heat, then shake your hair to add volume. Easy School Hairstyles

Help your little girl look fabulous at school with these quick and easy school hairstyles. Each takes 5 minutes or less to do and all of these easy school hairstyles look great, will help keep lice out and ensure that their hair will not annoy them throughout the day. Twists with Braid 1. Start by taking a section of hair (about 2-3 cms) on the right side of the head – mid way between the ears and forehead. Twist and then pin into place in line with the middle of the back of the head. Do the same for the left hand side. To make the pins more secure cris-cross them (or do two in different directions per twist) so that they are less likely to fall out. 2. Repeat this process with a section of hair just above the ears, twisting and pinning these pieces near the previous two. 3. Just below where the twists are pinned, split all the hair into three sections and braid the remainder of the hair into one plait. Do this by taking either the right section and putting it over the middle section, pulling the hair tight. Then take the left hand section and put it over the middle section (which was the right section). Keep repeating from side to side until you are at the end and secure with a hair band. Inverted Pony 1. Pull half the hair into a loose pony tail. I use a Scunci Topsy Tail to quickly and easily invert the pony tail, however you can do the same by creating a hole just above the hair band and taking the end of the pony, pushing it through the hole and pulling it down all the way through the pony to create the inverted pony look.

Double Inverted pony 1. 2. Do the same a little lower down with the remaining hair and the original pony tail.

Curly Ponytail 1. Pull hair back into a pony tail. Using your curling iron (we used the VS Sassoon Fashion curl), curl the hair within the ponytail. And you’re Done! 2. You can then let out the ponytail for a style with quick curls 

Side Plait 1. Put the hair into a ponytail at the back of the head. 2. Pull the hair to the side where you want the plait to sit, and plait the pony tail all the way down. Finish with another hairband to secure and voila.

Multiple Ponies 1. Simple and basic hairstyle that adds a little more colour and fun to the basic ponytail! 2. 2. Simply split the hair into a number of section and create mini ponytails. 3. Bring all the mini ponytails together and place in one large ponytail.

Enjoying a Parent’s Only - Weekend Getaway Weekend getaways offer an ideal opportunity for parents to enjoy some time away from the children and to focus on their relationship. Many working families will find it hard to take a number of longer holiday breaks throughout the year or to leave the children with grandparents or other carers for a long period of time; so a weekend getaway offers the perfect opportunity to relax, revive and reinvigorate.

Make the most of your weekend away

Look at what you can do to make the most of your weekend away. Consider going to a concert, a fun event or theatre performance and utilise the weekend away as a way to make the event more enjoyable as you won’t have to worry about transport home. It is a great idea to make the most of your weekend getaways by planning them away around special events (concerts, sporting games) or occasions (anniversaries).

Make the most of each other

It is not often that you have extended amounts of time to enjoy each other’s company. Consider what activities/relaxation methods both of you enjoy and try to incorporate a little bit for each into the weekend getaway. The aim for the weekend is to have fun and enjoy each other, reconnecting without stress and daily household overloads. Try to think of what you enjoyed prior to children or what is important to you now. If catching up on sleep is important, don’t over plan or create a hectic schedule. If enjoying each other’s company is important consider a fun activity you will both enjoy like a cooking class, cruise or something else.

Weekend Getaway Accommodation

Look at booking accommodation that meets your needs as a couple. Perhaps a hotel with a pool to enjoy, room service to take advantage of, or a spa treatment to ensure relaxation. Serviced Apartments offer a great way to save on cost, increase flexibility and are located close to shops, restaurants and bars. Unfortunately, too often many parents are drowning in parenting, children’s schedules, work and household duties which causes them to grow apart. Reconnecting and appreciating each other is an invaluable way to strengthen your relationship, appreciate each other work better as a team and stay together longer. A weekend getaway offers a great way to enjoy each other and reestablish the relationship without impacting heavily on the day to day tasks required as a parent.

Mummy’s Weekend Escape We’ve all heard it said before, being a Mum is a full time job. It’s natural for us, Mum’s, to want to take a break sometimes and enjoy some time for ourselves. Planning a weekend escape with a couple of girlfriends, leaving Dad or the Grandparents in charge is a great option for a few days of rest to recharge the batteries. At first it might seem daunting to ditch the kids but heading out from the city on a short break can provide the perfect haven for rest and rejuvenation whilst still being close enough to rush home if you need to. Here are some great ideas of getaways within easy reach of Australia’s capital cities. Hunter Valley NSW Just a short distance from Sydney, the Hunter Valley offers an abundance of wineries and first class restaurants. It’s not just about the wine tour; Mums in need of a recharge can soak up the colourful beauty of Hunter Valley Gardens, go hot air ballooning, or cheese tasting.
