Happy Mother’s Day! Issue 149 | Pietermaritzburg & Midlands | May 2019

| Editor’s Life

From the Editor’s Desk... Happy Mother’s Day to all our yummy mummies! We have some cute Mother’s Day gift and craft ideas for you in this issue. Why not make some yummy truffles that are so easy to make (or rather get Dad or Granny to make them with the kids, while you have a lovely lie in bed with your favourite book!) What did you think of the new look April issue? We have had some great response from our readers and we’d love to hear from you too, so please do send an email with your comments. Last month we had our highly anticipated annual PMB Ladies Breakfast on 12 April, which was a huge success. Over 200 ladies dressed to the ‘Fifties’ theme and much fun was had by all. We managed to not only raise lots of funds for The Sunflower Fund but also helped to raise awareness too. My family and I have just returned from a very wet and cold Easter weekend at Splashy Fen! We had a great time though and got to watch some really great bands. We managed to explore all the stages and various activations that they had on site. I really would recommend going next year if you haven’t been already. Wishing you all a wonderful Mother’s Day!

Meet the Cover Star

Everyday Life |

Our handsome cover star this month is three-year-old Kingston Bishop.

“Kingston is a confident and outgoing little boy. He can be quite social but also loves some alone time. He loves to busy himself with his ‘traffic box’, especially all things construction themed. His absolute favourite outdoor activity is riding his balance bike with ‘blazing speed’. He has just started on training wheels and loves the

challenge. Mom and son time consists of reading together (another favourite) and painting (mom’s favourite). He adores his sister and loves to play clown making her giggle!” says Tammy. “Alaska is a happy baby... laughs easily and is full of beans. She is just about to start crawling and already says ‘mumumum’. I’m taking that as ‘mom’!” As a family they love taking weekend walks and bike rides in the forests around Hilton their two four-legged children included! Sunday family braais or picnics have also become a little tradition - Kingston even GRADES 1 - 12

His parents are Tammy and Andrew Bishop from Hilton. He also has a little sister, Alaska, who is 7 months old. Tammy is a former social worker who is now a stay-at-home mom, while Andrew runs his own business.

has his own little Weber to braai next to his dad! On being a mom: “Connect with other moms for support and if you need more than that... see a professional counsellor or psychologist. Motherhood is beautiful and challenging but nothing prepares you for the emotional rollercoaster. There is no shame in finding the support and outlet you need... in the end it makes you a better and more capable mother,” concludes Tammy. Written by Sarah Mackintosh PIETERMARITZBURG

Homemade Chocolate Truffles for Mother’s Day You can really impress your mom this Mother’s Day by making her some homemade chocolate truffles. Add the butter, if using, to the chocolate and pour the heavy cream evenly on top. Let the warm cream and chocolate sit for five minutes. Add the vanilla extract then stir until the chocolate has completely melted. Place a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface (to avoid condensation) and refrigerate for one to two hours. Tip: Pour into a flat shallow dish, so the mixture evenly and quickly sets.

They sound really fancy, but we’ve found a super easy recipe at Sally’s Baking Addiction blog. Give it a try and let us know how it goes!

• Optional: 1 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened to room temperature • Optional: 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract • Toppings: unsweetened cocoa These homemade chocolate powder, sprinkles, crushed nuts, truffles are extra creamy with the melted or tempered chocolate, addition of butter. After mixing coconut and chocolate sprinkles the ingredients together, let the etc. Use your imagination and mixture set in the refrigerator, have fun! then roll into balls. You can coat in your favourite toppings and Instructions: add lots of fun flavours, too! Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Set aside. Ingredients: • Two 4-ounce quality chocolate Heat the heavy cream until it is bars (226g), very finely chopped simmering. You can heat it on • 2/3 cup (160ml) heavy cream the stove or in the microwave. www.mumsmail.com

Scoop the set truffle mixture into two teaspoon-sized mounds. For larger truffles, use tablespoon size mounds. Roll each into balls. This gets a little sticky, so Sally suggests you cover your hands in a bit of cocoa powder to reduce stickiness. Roll each truffle into toppings, if desired. Truffles taste best at room temperature! Cover tightly and store truffles at room temperature for 3 to 4 days or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Place the truffles into a cellophane bag and tie a ribbon around the top, or into a special gift box with tissue paper. Source: www. sallysbakingaddiction.com.

A Swinging Time at the MUM’S MAIL PMB

‘Fifties’ Ladies Breakfast

The 6th Annual Mum’s Mail PMB ‘Fifties’ Ladies Breakfast in association with The Sunflower Fund and sponsored by PMB Arch Lifestyle Centre, held on 12 April at The Victoria Country Club in Pietermaritzburg, was a resounding success. The theme this year was the Fifties - think Grease, jukeboxes and swing dresses. What a fun theme it was! The ladies went all out for the dress code, and there was a prize of a complete hair and make-up makeover sponsored by Terry Scott Hair Fashion for the best-dressed guest exemplifying the Fifties era. Guests enjoyed a two-course breakfast and a cappuccino, decadent individual desserts by Chateau Gateaux, a B.O.N Natural Oils gift per lady, jampacked goodie bags, guest speakers, surprise treats and loads of exciting prizes and

giveaways. There was also a fun photo booth, a pamper station, a ‘Fifties make-up’ touch up station, and retail therapy popup shops.

“All funds raised from the event will go to The Sunflower Fund...” There were amazing raffle prizes to be won – a pamper package, a travel package and a home and entertainment package, all valued at more than R7000 each, and the surprise envelopes on sale didn’t disappoint this year. There was even a secret auction to win a lovely prize that included a six-pack of Chateau Gateaux desserts, two movie tickets and two private Pilates sessions. All funds raised from the event will go to The Sunflower

Charcoal Masks:

Good or Bad?

So you’ve all seen those funny videos online of people pulling off a painful charcoal peel-off mask… And you may also have read about the amazing benefits of charcoal masks… but then you’ve also heard they might not be so good for you. So which is it; are they good or bad for your skin?

Multiple Sclerosis

Awareness Month

May is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness month, and Mum’s Mail chatted to Carly Erasmus, a local mom and entrepreneur who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in December 2011. Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis.

Although she didn’t realise it, Carly was having symptoms as early as 2007 – four years before she was diagnosed. At the time of diagnosis, Carly had a stressful executive job and it became difficult to function – she got tired easily and suffered from short term memory loss. For the first two years after diagnosis, Carly also suffered from depression and gained weight. In 2017 Carly became a mom and moved to Durban to open a travel business with her sister.

She lives with her mother and son on her sister’s property. This ensures she has a good support system around her – this is important for MS sufferers, especially a single mom like Carly. Her son Matthew is now two years old and is a real fireball, according to his mom! Carly works from home - this ensures she can rest when she’s tired, which is essential for MS sufferers. “I have to wear flat shoes all the time in case I fall, sometimes I can’t talk, sometimes I shake and I forget words… I have to inject myself three times a day and take 13 pills, twice a day. I never want my son to feel as if he has to take care of me. As he gets older, I will explain more about my disease.” Of course Carly hopes a cure will be found. Until then, Carly

11

says it’s important to raise awareness about MS and how to support those you know that have MS.

“If you know someone who has MS – be mindful of the fact that there are many side effects. Be patient – we have no control over it. Support them where you can.” To those who have MS, Carly has this advice: “Be kind to yourself, it’s not your fault. Take a deep breath and surround yourself with people who love you and understand. Cut out stress and negativity in your life.” For more information about MS, visit www. multiplesclerosis.co.za. Written by Sarah Mackintosh.

Why Team Sports are a Win

for Your Little Champ Some kids are natural born athletes… and then you get the little ones who need a little more persuading to take to the field.

Whether your child is a Messi in-the-making, or is anti-activity at the best of times – here’s how sports will help your little ones become champs at life. They’ll learn how to get along with others – even those they don’t like Children who are a part of a team learn to overlook - and work with - those who they might not necessarily like off the field. Teammates learn to accept one another’s differences and really root for each other at the end of the day. They’ll learn the benefits of friendly competition Respect is one of the most important things your child will learn as part of a team. They’ll learn to play fair, respect their teammates, and of course,

respect their coach’s and captain’s decisions. And while being competitive is not a bad thing, it’s respect that’ll encourage friendly competition amongst happy, secure children. They’ll learn the skills to become future leaders Organised team sports teach children the discipline, patience, respect and focus that will take them beyond extramural sports, and well into their working careers. They don’t have to be number 1 gold medalists season after season, but just being part of a team and balancing school life with sports is what will harness a good work ethic that will take them far. They’ll learn that you don’t always win On the field is where kids will

start learning that life isn’t fair – and that there’s times when you win, and there’s time when you lose. This is where they’ll learn the importance of endurance, perseverance and always trying their best at whatever they do. They’ll discover their strengths and capabilities When it comes to sports, every sporting legend had to start somewhere. And the same applies to your little athlete. As they grow as athletes, so will their self-confidence. Mastering a skill, sport or even a position on the field will boost their confidence – and give them the self-assurance they need to take on challenges later in life. Source: www.mrpsport.com.
