August is All About Women South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. The Government of South Africa declared August Women’s Month and 9 August is celebrated annually as Women’s Day. In addition to Women’s Day and Women’s Month, in August some countries also celebrate Single Working Women’s Day on 4 August each year. This day is held to recognise the important role of all single working women in our societies and communities all over the world. Things to do this Women’s Day: Luckily for us, Women’s Day is a public holiday. Although Women’s Day has a serious

meaning behind it, that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun on the holiday! If you want to spoil the women in your life this Women’s Day, here are some fun ideas! • Picnic at the beach/park – enjoy our wonderful KZN winter weather and take your family to a beautiful location. Pack a picnic basket with lunch or treats and champagne, lots of blankets and pillows and let your mom/wife relax in the winter sun while the kids play! • Movie day! Take her to see a chic flick and spoil her with popcorn and treats! • Have a braai or lunch at home but make sure she doesn’t have to do any of the preparations

– let her sit back and watch everyone else do the work for once! • Enjoy a lovely lunch out with family so she can relax and have some fun! • Give her some alone time – take the kids out for the day and let her sleep in and enjoy some me-time! • Take a drive to somewhere new for lunch or a day out – somewhere you don’t usually go, like the KZN Midlands or the south or north coast. Somewhere new will be a real treat for the whole family! By Sarah Mackintosh.

The Benefits of Factory Shopping

Factory outlets are stores where brands sell their stock in stores directly to customers. These items are usually sold for a cheaper price, which makes them really popular among consumers. Many brands have their own factory outlet stores.

They exist as a brick and mortar place in the shopping district or in malls. An increasing number of brands are now opening factory outlets online too.

Houseplant Comeback

The best reason to invest in lots of houseplants is that one can garden and play around with nature at any time, even on those days when it’s just too cold to go outside into the garden. However, there are many more reasons to love houseplants, and here are five more. • Some, like peace lilies (Spathiphyllum) and Ficus species, are good air purifiers. They are also proven to provide a calmness to a living or work space. • Flowering houseplants last much longer than cut flowers, thus making them better value for money - winter favourites are Cyclamens and Azaleas. • Large and dramatic tropical leaves like those of Monsteras and Philodendrons are still totally on-trend! • Sculptural plants and large palms make for delightful natural decor items. • Potted herbs which can be kept on a sunny kitchen windowsill for easy access are also in! Try chives, coriander, mint and Vietnamese coriander for spicy curries this winter.

Cool houseplants to try out Staghorn fern (Platycerium) – an epiphytic tropical plant with two types of leaves. It has tough bright green antler-like foliage as well as flat basal-like leaves, which can turn brown and papery. This plant is normally sold already mounted on a piece of wood. Hang it in bright, diffused sunlight and mist regularly with water. Zebra plant (Calathea) – this tropical plant with its lovely mottled leaves enjoys a humid atmosphere and bright diffused light. Frequent misting will prevent brown leaf edges, and regular feeding with a water soluble fertiliser at half-strength will keep it lush.

Spathiphyllum ‘Sensation’ - Technically a tender perennial, this Spath (or peace lily) is a foliage-rich plant to keep indoors. The unassuming grace of the flower makes it a decorative delight. Give this plant regular water and ensure the soil never completely dries With cutting-edge experience and between watering. How Long Does Your Waste Take to Decompose?

PETS FOR ADOPTION

According to www.treevolution.co.za, recycling for your average suburban household in South Africa is a bit of a schlep: the infrastructure for collecting recyclable material isn’t really in place - yet. Households generally have to separate their rubbish and take the recyclables to a municipal drop-off centre or a buy-back centre because there’s not much in the way of kerbside collection. Many people just can’t be bothered. The government wants to reduce the amount of plastic, cans, paper and glass going to landfills by 70 percent in the next decade or so. To meet that target, households need to stop simply throwing away rubbish and start implementing the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Here is a handy guide to how long some products take to decompose, so you can make informed decisions when it comes to the products you consume in your home. • Paper Towel: 2 to 4 weeks • Paper Bag: 1 month • Newspaper: 1.5 months • Apple Core: 2 months • Cardboard: 2 months • Cotton Glove: 3 months • Plywood: 1 to 3 years • Wool Sock: 1 to 5 years • Milk Cartons: 5 years • Cigarette Butts: 10 to 12 years • Leather shoes: 25 to 40 years • Tinned Steel Can: 50 years • Foam Plastic Cups: 50 years • Rubber-Boot Sole: 50 to 80 years • Plastic containers: 50 to 80 years • Aluminium Can: 200 to 500 years • Plastic Bottles: 450 years • Disposable Diapers: 550 years • Monofilament Fishing Line: 600 years • Plastic Bags: 200 to 1000 years

What to Do to Increase Your Breast Milk Supply

If you are experiencing an irregular supply, fear not. There are steps every woman can take to ensure she gets her milk supply to where it should be namely:

stick to your feeding schedule. If you go back to work, pump in the regular time you would feed your baby.

Breastfeed Your New Born: Try breastfeeding your baby as soon as you can post birth.

Practice Latching: If you are struggling to latch, see a breastfeeding expert and seek help to ensure your baby latches correctly.

Pump: If you find your baby is not finishing your milk, or you just want a little extra for feeding, make sure to pump regularly. This will also help with milk production. Frequency: Ensure you are breastfeeding often. Remember, your baby’s tummy will digest your milk in between one and a half to two hours. Furthermore,

Take Care of You: Be sure to look after yourself. Ensure you are drinking enough fluids and getting the rest you need. Dehydration and fatigue can greatly affect your milk supply!

Alternate Sides: Be sure to alternate between breasts when feeding your baby. Seek Medical Alternatives: Discuss all medication you take with your doctor before feeding. If you find a certain medicine is inhibiting your feeding, try seeking an alternative.

Gastroenteritis in Children

therapy and introduce milk gradually and later, a soft diet. Some children may relapse, in which case you must start oral rehydration again. Parents must be patient, nurse the child with fluid support and do not rush to solid food. Once the stools return to normal and vomiting settles, only then can the child return to a normal diet and gain weight. All children will get gastroenteritis at some point, sometimes several times. The sooner parents learn to use oral rehydration therapy, the less the chances of dehydration. Children are small and dehydrate easily, especially with refusal to drink sufficient rehydration fluids, persistent vomiting and profuse watery stools. Seek medical help early. Women’s Health Month

“Wellness encompasses a healthy body, a sound mind, and a tranquil spirit. Enjoy the journey as you strive for wellness.” - Laurette Gagnon Beaulieu.

We are often too busy to take care of all three of these very important components! The truth is that as keepers of the house, women cannot afford NOT to keep the balance between physical and mental health. Physical and psychological health checks: • Monitor your Blood Pressure and Pulse Rate: A sudden increase should be further www.mumsmail.com

evaluated. • Mammogram: Medical aids only pay for a mammogram every 2/3 years. Do your breast self-examination at least once a month and discuss any abnormal findings with your GP. Even if you do not know what exactly you are feeling for, your brain will make a map if you do it regularly and alert you to any changes. • Pap test: Schedule your yearly Pap test with your GP or gynaecologist. A Pap test will pick up abnormal cells before they turn cancerous. • Base line blood tests: Most medicals include Lipogram, Glucose and HIV tests. An Iron profile, Vit D, Thyroid and Insulin should also be done, especially in the case 26

of chronic fatigue and weight gain. • Colonoscopy and bone density tests for over 50s are also important. • Be honest with yourself about how you feel. Your emotional well-being plays a very important part in your physical wellbeing. Discuss issues such as insomnia and anxiety with your GP or psychologist. Sort out the ghosts of the past and the fears of the future. Strive for wellness and enjoy the journey - your children will learn from your example and benefit from a parent that grows old healthy.

Mooimaak Makeovers:

San-Marie Aucamp

If you’ve been watching Mooimaak on kykNET, you’ll know the Skin Renewal team don’t just perform incredible makeovers, they can also change lives. This was the case for San-Marie Aucamp who, at 26, was the youngest patient to appear on the show. She’d lost her confidence after years of bullying in high school, but this was something that Dr Rulene Maré and therapist Elke Kritzinger could help her get back. A perfected profile San-Marie was self-conscious about her profile so Dr Maré inserted dissolvable

polydioxanone (PDO threads) into her nose to straighten the nasal bridge while dermal fillers created a more even look. Dermal fillers were also used to build up San-Marie’s chin while a series of injections containing a fat-melting Ceccarelli solution enhanced her neckline.

Eye alive! Dr Maré opened San-Marie’s hooded eyes using a twopronged approach. PDO barbed threads inserted into her forehead to lift up her eyebrows and a knife-free blepharoplasty via a Jett Plasma Eye Rejuvenation treatment. The latter involves a device that

Brightening packs on special this Women’s month!

See the light A Laser Genesis Rejuvenation session is a great way to stimulate your collagenproduction in a way that improves the look of wrinkles, pores, acne and scars. While San-Marie’s youthful complexion is line and blemishfree, the laser could minimise her skin’s redness and pores and create a healthy glow. Applying a moisturising moisture to dry winter air and help keep your skin balm can help heal dry, cracked lips and keep hydrated. them from getting chapped. Limit Shower Time and Temperature It may be tempting to take a long, steamy shower, but your skin will be much better-served with a five to 10 minute lukewarm shower (or bath). You should also avoid using excessively hot water when washing your hands - if the water causes your skin to turn red, it’s too hot. Opt for Gentle, Fragrance-Free Cleansers The wrong soap can worsen itchy, dry skin. For instance, regular bar soaps may contain irritating ingredients and fragrances. Transforming Those Born Into Poverty

The Seed Fund was established to bring about transformation in severely disadvantaged communities. Their flagship community is the Malacca Informal Settlement, which is located on the outskirts of Durban North. Most of its residents live on less than US$2 per day – which is the World Bank’s definition of extreme poverty. “The goal of the Seed Fund is to transform the community in Malacca Road into an environment where each individual, especially the children, are able to realize their full potential. We are wanting to awaken and ignite the dreams within those living there and help them understand that even though they were born into poverty that doesn’t have to be their destiny.” Their goal is to equip the next generation with life skills, tools, ability and mind-set to shift from a life of poverty, sickness, crime, drugs and alcoholism to a life of purpose. To give them a future where they can

become teachers, doctors, lawyers, business men and women and fulfil their dreams. They believe that by uplifting these children they can uplift entire communities, causing a seismic change in society; creating jobs, businesses and education, adding to the economy and alleviating poverty and crime. The Seed Fund believes that transformation begins with the children - without minimising the importance of family and community. As far as the children are concerned, The Seed Fund’s key areas of intervention ensure that each child is: • Registered at school and that fees are paid • Kitted out with school uniforms and stationery • Safely transported to and from school • Receives daily lunch • Has access to homework assistance and literacy

Safety Comes First with the Hauck Comfort Fix Car Seat

Hauck is proud to announce that their Comfort Fix Car Seat was ADAC crash tested and scored very well! What is independent crash testing?

Stiftung Warentest and ADAC have evaluated the Hauck Comfort Fix Set with the test result “GUT” (GOOD). The Comfort Fix Set is not only the best of the sets tested in the category “infant car seats with Isofix base”, but also the price/ performance winner. Hauck is one of the few providers that offer such complete sets and that have achieved such good test results in two categories at the same time. In addition, these results confirm that - with Hauck - children are always safe during road trips, while maximum safety is guaranteed in case of a frontal or side impact. The following stroller sets have the Comfort Fix Car Seat: • Maxan 4 Plus Trio Set • Maxan 3 Plus Trio Set • Soul Plus Trio Set • Rapid 4 Plus Trio Set • Rapid 3 Plus Trio Set For more information visit www.hauck.co.za/ collections/stroller-sets. www.mumsmail.com

Car seats are life saving devices, and not all car seats are created equal. But expensive seats don’t necessarily provide better protection. That’s where independent crash testing comes in. In South Africa we follow European car seat regulations. All car seats legitimately sold here need to pass the ECE R44/04 or R129 crash testing. You will find an orange ECE sticker on your car seat to confirm that the car seat complies with the basic safety requirements as set out in the European safety standard.

Car seat manufacturers do not pay for the testing nor do they volunteer for the testing. ADAC assesses car seats on 5 points: • Safety • Service/usability • Pollutants • Comfort • Processing/use

The Swedish Plus Test (Stiftung Warentest): • This test is carried out with a speed of 56.5 km/h. • Neck load is carefully assessed by measuring the crash forces applied to the dummies neck with sensors • Very short braking distance, which makes the impact on the car seat is brutal. The shorter the braking distance, the more violent the forces become.

Car seats have to be approved by the NRCS in order to be sold Source: Precious Cargo. legally in South Africa. If a car seat is not on the homologated list, it may be a fake or illegal seat. The ECE results are not published and the public have no way of knowing how these car seats fare during crash testing; whether they scraped through or exceeded the testing criteria. ADAC Car Seat Safety Test: What is ADAC? ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) is an automobile club in Germany that selects car seats for independent crash testing. 38

Buy the Perfect Gift from

Mimbee Watches and Accessories

Buying your child’s first watch is an important building block for your child’s mental development. It is recommended that younger children should choose an analogue face over a digital watch. In addition to helping with early counting, the analogue design provides a visual math problem each time a child glances at it. Kids must add and subtract minutes as they figure out the time. Mimbee’s time-teaching watches are great for learning how to tell the time - with “to” and “past” printed on the dial and “grown-up” styling, they will provide the perfect bridge between children’s and adult’s watches Mimbee’s range also includes slap watches which come in a variety of shapes and colours, as well as cute characters and themes. Kids will adore the bright colour and comfy fit of their own slap watch - they’ll explore the undersea world with mermaids and turtles or look for buried treasure as captain of a pirate ship. The nature of the Mimbee range lends itself very well to gifting and for that reason, it has expanded into other accessories such as kiddies’ sunglasses with UV 400 protection. These fold into cute little animal shapes that can fit into pockets or backpacks. Then there is the new ‘Colour-In Watch Set’. It consists of a flat white digital watch that the child can colour in using the koki pens included. Besides watches, Mimbee has a variety of other cute and creative toys and accessories for your young ones. Find them at Toys R Us, Game, Marko and Zando!
