Our name, Pema, is the Tibetan sound of the Sanskrit padma, meaning lotus. The lotus flower is the traditional Buddhist symbol of training and enlightenment. zafu meditation cushions The traditional pleated round zafu can be used for cross-legged sitting, chair sitting, or for kneeling (seiza posture) by placing it between the legs to keep the weight of the body off the lower legs and heels.
Our Bean zafu provides excellent support for people with long legs and transfers weight to the sitting bones to relieve the perineal area. The forward-sloping wedge promotes back comfort. It is well designed for the Burmese sitting style where both feet rest on the floor and one heel is tucked in close to the body.

what is kapok fiber? The kapok tree, Ceiba pentandra, also called the ceiba or silk-cotton tree, can reach 40 meters or more in height. Kapoks are beautiful trees with wide buttresses at the base and large, flattened crowns of leaves and branches. The large leaves, which drop annually, lead to the opening of bell-shaped flowers though this only happens every five or ten years. During one flowering season, a mature tree may produce up to 4000 fruits which each contain about 200 seeds. The large pea-like seeds are formed in pods, and it is these thick, woody pods which contain the kapok fiber. Kapok trees are found in the tropics world-wide, though it’s believed they originated in the Americas. Today, these trees are often farmed for their fiber and most commercial kapok comes from Java.

comparing fills In comparing the two types of hulls, we have found the millet hulls provide a slightly lighter weight cushion which feels softer and smoother than the buckwheat hulls. Both types of hulls provide a very firm support in a zafu; however, for extended periods of sitting the buckwheat hulls may tend to feel hard. Emptying some hulls through the zipper will result in a softer, more moldable cushion. Buckwheat hulls give a soft sound when they shift in the cushion; the millet hulls are quieter. Both types of hulls are durable and long-lasting. Kapok fibre, which is packed in the zafu quite tightly, provides a softer cushion. This fill is best for the seiza, or kneeling, position, where the zafu is placed on its side between the legs for support. Kapok will soften and ‘deflate’ with use, but loft can be restored by fluffing the zafu in a hot dryer.

zabuton mats Zabuton fills are either kapok fibre or natural unbleached cotton batting in a zippered cotton twil liner. The zippered covers are washable cotton duck. The thin cotton zabuton is made with a zippered cotton duck cover without a liner. comparing zabuton fills The kapok fibre is loosely packed into a tightly woven “downproof” liner. When new, the zabuton is quite fluffy, but will settle in the first week or so of use to provide a soft, thick cushion for knees and ankles when in sitting meditation. A kapok zabuton can be fluffed up in a hot dryer to restore some of its loft. Cotton batting zabutons are slightly heavier than those with kapok fill. They will provide a firmer support and compact with use. The thin cotton zabuton, which does not provide as much cushioning, is suitable when used on carpeted floors.

meditation benches & accessories The hinged legs lock in place and fold for portability. The legs have a slightly curved base which makes it possible for sitter to adjust angle of seat.
the Lotus Bench This hardwood meditation bench is ideal for people who find it difficult to sit crosslegged on a cushion or prefer to have a slightly elevated seat. It can be used when kneeling, or sitting with ankles crossed. The bench’s legs have a curved base so sitter can adjust angle of seat, and are hinged for carrying the bench folded.
Currently, our benches are made with birchwood which has been sanded to a silky smoothness and finished with a light hand-rubbed oil. Our stock varies according to wood availability. We use sustainably harvested, North American woods whenever possible.

buckwheat & millet hull pillows about our pillows Buckwheat hull and millet hull pillows are recognized as an environmentally friendly and orthopedically healthy sleep support. They are used and recommended by chiropractors, massage therapists and physiotherapists. Compared to other sleep pillow fills, such as polyfill, foam and feathers, hulls will neither compact nor bounce back. The hulls shift easily and naturally to conform to the contours of the head and neck, providing good support and minimizing stress on the neck and shoulders.

Our sleep pillows are quite full and firm. Firmness of the pillow can be adjusted for comfort by pouring out some of the hulls, as much as twothirds for some users. Saved hulls should be stored in a dry place.
Our pillows are filled with clean certified organic Canadian buckwheat or millet hulls. The zippered covers are made from tightly woven 100% unbleached cotton twill with finished seams.

buckwheat hull pet beds Pema Design pet beds are filled with cleaned and dusted certified organic Canadian grown buckwheat hulls. The zippered liners are made with waterresistant coated polycotton. The covers are made with sturdy 100% cotton duck and have heavy-duty zippers. Both cover and liner are machine washable. Covers can be all one color or two contrasting colors on top and bottom. Liners are a light tan color.
