Letter from Our Head of School, John Wray Dear Members of the Mulgrave Community, It is with great pleasure that I write my introduction to the annual report for 2015-2016.

This has been a transitional year for Mulgrave as we complete the 2011-2016 strategic plan and move forward with our new strategic plan for 2020.

The past five years have been years of considerable achievement for our school and especially our individual students who have benefitted from an increasingly enriched educational experience and who have been continuously pushing the boundaries of personal best in all areas of school life.

As we look ahead to the next few years, the imperative to improve and develop our education is even greater than before. We will enhance our focus on preparing our students from the earliest age in all divisions of the school with the values, skills and personal qualities to thrive in an increasingly complex, competitive and international world. We want our students to be even John Wray

more inspired to lead happy, fulfilled and successful lives in the future, and we need to ensure that our education, based on the International Baccalaureate programmes - the best academic programmes in the world - is adapted and improved to meet those goals.

At the heart of this endeavor is the need to ensure that we properly invest in the development of our teachers and that we give our teachers the equipment, resources, and facilities to continue to

inspire our children to new levels of achievement across all areas of school life. Our school can only be as successful as every teacher in every classroom and our 2020 strategic plan lays out how we shall achieve these goals in more detail, along with the action plans for achieving them.

Letter from Our Board Chair, Harry Wierenga Dear Members of the Mulgrave Community, Our family has been part of the Mulgrave community for 21 years, and even though all of our children have now graduated successfully from the school, I am delighted and honoured still to be serving this wonderful community as Chair of the Board.

I would like to thank all members of the community, whether you are a student, a teacher, a parent, or someone from our alumni community, for all that you have done for our school not only in the last year but over Mulgrave’s short but proud history.

Ours is a story of incredible endeavor, of outstanding commitment and of visionary leadership.

We are thankful to have had the support of people who are committed to raising our school to amongst the very best of independent schools in Canada with a growing reputation on the world stage. However, we will not stand still, and I am excited that our ambitious strategic plan for the next period will take a Mulgrave education to a new level. As in the early days of the school’s development and in the intervening years, we will continue to need your support to Harry Wierenga

I would like to take this opportunity to profoundly thank all of the staff who work at the school for their skills, dedication, and selfless commitment to our children. I know personally how much impact this great service has on our children, and we are very fortunate to have a Mulgrave staff such as ours. I would also like to thank once again my fellow Board members on both the School and Foundation Boards and members of the MVP executive for their contribution and leadership within the wider community. The work of the people on these groups is often long and arduous, unsung and unheard.

I hope that you find this annual report informative and inspiring. It can capture only a tiny fraction of the richness of the school and can reflect only a semblance of the very special ethos that defines us.

The Mulgrave report to the community celebrates our achievements and demonstrates how we meet our mission through the education we provide. This annual publication is distributed to current parents, alumni, alumni families, staff, and local community leaders. The 2015-2016 report covers the school year starting in September 2015 and ending October 2016. This report contains only a small selection of our collective achievements. We hope you enjoy reading it and welcome your feedback.

Who We Are Mulgrave is a co-ed, secular International Baccalaureate (IB) World School predominantly serving the North Shore of Vancouver.

As an independent day school with a reputation for academic excellence and for providing a holistic education, we offer the IB curriculum in Pre-K through to Grade 12 in a spectacular West Vancouver setting: • Primary Years Programme (Pre-K to Grade 5) • Middle Years Programme (Grade 6 to 10) • Diploma Programme (Grade 11 and 12)

Academic, athletic, artistic, and service & leadership opportunities comprise the four strands of a Mulgrave education, and they are enriched by a robust outdoor education programme that strengthens our students’ connection to and respect for our natural world. Our well-being is celebrated, but giving back and making a difference through both local and international projects are an integral part of the fabric that makes up our community.

1. Personalisation of Learning, Support and Curriculum

MULGRAVE ‘Good to Great’: the 2011—2016 Strategic Plan As we come to the end of the ‘Good to Great’ Strategic Plan, it is worth reflecting on the enormous improvements that have been made in each of the eight goal areas.

• Created and implemented the Mulgrave Teaching and Learning Guide with an ongoing focus on differentiation, assessment for learning strategies, and student feedback • Provided Associate Teachers in all K-G2 classrooms, giving a staff to student ratio of 1:10 • Established a range of standardised tests to help predict and support individual student performance • Established strong Learning Support teams in the Junior and Upper Schools • Increased a range of student support staff including an additional university counsellor, technicians in

Science and Art and Design, and extra staff in the library/ learning centre • Further developed and extended our 1:1 technology (including iPads in the JS and BYOD in the US) and Google Apps for Education (GAFE) to support learning in G2-12 • Introduced the Middle School elective programme, which has increased student motivation and commitment to school and new courses in the Senior School, which have allowed students to increasingly study in areas of strength and interest • Revised the school calendar to improve student learning -

The result of these initiatives has been impressive year on year improvements in the school’s academic scores, which in turn, has allowed students to access a wider range of competitive university courses.

2. Increased Emphasis on Individual Skill Progression • Begun work on this complex area of education to systematically embed key 21st century skills into the curriculum. Critical thinking and research skills now mapped throughout the curriculum and work begun on social and emotional learning and self management skills in the Middle School through the new Life and Learning course, as well as digital literacy skills across the curriculum.

This work has begun to have an impact on students’ skills and has given us a good base from which to further develop this aspect within the framework of the next strategic plan.

3. Strengthening of Athletics, the Arts, Service, Outdoor Education and Co-curricular activities, including through community partnerships • Improvement in athletics and performing arts facilities with the turf field, two new performing arts rooms, a new visual arts studio, and additional gym and fitness room

• Established partnerships with external organisations including the Goh Ballet, local Academy sports programmes, and performing arts providers.

We have seen significantly higher performance and participation in all additional strands of education.

4. Developing Foreign Languages and the International Dimension • Introduced additional Chinese language classes in K-12 to assist differentiation, including the native language programme • Revised the language pathways, including the introduction of language specialisation in French and Chinese in G4 and the introduction of Spanish in G10

• Commenced the CIS international accreditation process • Revised the Global Education and Outreach programme, developed a sister school arrangement with a school in Shanghai and long-term exchange programmes in France and China

5. Strengthening our Community • Strengthened our internal and external communications, including a new website • Continued to develop a strong sense of community as our cultural diversity has evolved

• Refreshed the Mulgrave visual brand to reflect our education provision and the school we are today • Developed our Alumni communications and activities

6. Improving our staff conditions of service to facilitate recruitment, retention and capacity for change • Continued to improve our staff salaries and benefits and working conditions

project plus extensive renovations including a new gym and fitness centre, extended art studio, and new science lab

8. Increasing our fundraising capacity including to support bursaries • Completed the $30m capital campaign for the new Senior School project in under three years with a 75% family participation rate

• Created new revenue streams through external lettings and summer school activities

• Increased our bursary in line with inflation and additional entry scholarships for students who demonstrate need

During this period we have maintained our fundamental character as a PK-12 coeducational, three class per grade, independent, IB Continuum school primarily for families who live on the North Shore of Vancouver.

Shared values and a common purpose strengthen our ties as we all strive together to provide our children with an exceptional, holistic education that will prepare them for university and beyond.

There is no doubt that it is the quality of teaching and learning that underpins students’ success at school, and Mulgrave is blessed with an outstanding teaching faculty. They are dedicated and skilled IB teaching professionals who are passionate about education and work daily to improve their craft. They care deeply for the well-being of their students and place a strong emphasis on developing positive relationships in order to facilitate personal and academic growth.

Parents are essential to the success of our school.

They are key partners in the execution of our common goals. With their invaluable support and input, we strive collaboratively to help our students reach their true potential.

Whether involved as event organisers for our annual Gala, as volunteers in the library, or as presenters in the classrooms, our parents share the Mulgrave vision of inspiring excellence in education and life. We are incredibly grateful for how much they do to make our community what it is today.

The Mulgrave Volunteer Parents Association (MVP) helps coordinate all parent volunteer, social and fundraising activities with the school.

Working together with staff and parents, the MVP’s primary goal is to sustain Mulgrave’s sense of community and foster a broad-based spirit of participation.

We are incredibly grateful to them for their generous donation of time and energy year upon year. Their involvement in so many aspects of school life, from providing the Admissions team support to organising Grad Ball, strengthens the ties that make our community so strong. They are passionate, talented people who radiate warmth and positive energy.

Curriculum and Academic Performance Mulgrave offers the International Baccalaureate programme to all students. We believe the IB is the best education available today to help prepare our students for tomorrow.

GRADE 10 & 12 PROVINCIAL EXAMINATIONS Under the new guidelines set forth by the BC Ministry of Education, our Grade 10 students are no longer required to write provincial exams. Our Grade 12 students all met provincial requirements through their IB courses. A new set of provincial exams for Grade 12 will fully take effect in 2017-2018.

IB DP RESULTS

2016 highlights include:

Mulgrave’s IB Diploma examination results were the best in school history and continue the trend of improved results year-on-year.

Fifty-four students presented as Diploma candidates and wrote the full range of IB examinations in May 2016.

Ninety-eight percent (98%) of our diploma candidates achieved the full IB Diploma.

• Highest average point score of students who passed the full diploma (34.4 pts from 33.8 in 2015) • Highest % of students in Mulgrave history to achieve 40 or more points (14.8% from 9.1% in 2015) • Highest % of students in Mulgrave history to achieve 35 or more points (41.8%) • Highest average grade achieved by students passing the diploma (5.4) • The average school grade exceeded the worldwide average in 89% (25/28) of the subjects taught at Mulgrave (85% in 2015) • Ten students (18.5%) achieved a bilingual diploma in Korean (2) and Chinese (8) (14.5% in 2015) • Students achieved level 7s in 21 out of 30 subjects (19/33 in 2015)

All of our statistics from this year are considerably above worldwide averages and represent a further strengthening of Mulgrave’s already high academic standards.

Mulgrave School Alumni Association Our alumni family is a group of valued supporters, ambassadors, and lifelong learners who enhance the strength of the Mulgrave community. They are the building blocks of our past, and the support beams of our future. Guided by a dedicated group of class representatives and supported by the school, the Alumni Association aims to engage our alumni in meaningful ways, and to provide a framework for seeing through our Alumni Association’s mission statement: Fostering lifelong connections between Mulgrave and past students, families, staff, and faculty.

Athletics Mulgrave offers a rich variety of athletic opportunities that enable our student-athletes in G3-12 to flourish in a number of individual and team sports. Through competition in the North Shore Secondary School Athletics Association (NSSSAA), Independent Schools Athletic Association (ISAA), and the Independent Schools Elementary Association (ISEA), our coaches support our student-athletes as they strive for athletic excellence and personal best. Strong emphasis is also placed on sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, character development, and respect for others.

Outdoor Education Mulgrave offers a vibrant Outdoor Education programme that engages all K-12 students in experiences outside of the classroom. We value the opportunity for students to make links between outdoor education and their classroom learning experiences. For this reason, we offer activities throughout the year for students to engage in these ‘experiential’ learning opportunities.

Through multi-sensory learning in nature-based contexts, Mulgrave’s Outdoor Education programme builds resilience in its students, along with an appreciation for our natural surroundings and the skills to actively participate in, and advocate for, our remarkable local region.

FALL CAMPS Starting with an overnight ‘camp’ at the school for Grade 3, the programme is designed to take students through a progression of physical and mental challenges which are authentic and age appropriate.

The ability to face and overcome such challenges helps build self-esteem by demonstrating to participants that they can thrive in a variety of physical and social environments.

SUMMIT LEAP PROGRAMME This elective programme strives to provide students with the opportunity to develop a broad understanding of outdoor skills and knowledge. A familiar adage states: “Leadership is about action, not position.” At Mulgrave, leadership is not a title nor is it exclusive. Our goal is to open doors and get students involved in ‘learning to lead’ from different places and spaces of interest. GEO: “Be the change, and be changed” Mulgrave’s Global Education and Outreach (GEO) programme is more than just international trips. It is a global citizenship programme that makes the world our classroom, engaging youth in experiential service learning in sustainable community development around the globe. Students work on community and/or environmental service projects, connect with learners and leaders from different cultures, explore leadership training and action planning, and have a real impact on the lives of others and each other. When students return home, they are ready to put their learning into practice as true world citizens. Mulgrave’s programming is supported through our partnership with Me to We. In 2016, students in Grades 7-10 had the opportunity to visit Ecuador, Dominican Republic, and Kenya.

Highlights from the Me to We GEO Dominican Republic Trip: • Experiencing an ​impactful, culturally life-changing ​trip that went beyond the beach • Learning about the challenges faced by Haitian citizens living in the Dominican Republic and how their refugee status has an impact on their access to essential services such as education and health care • Participating in a project that, as Me to We described, “helped to build a path to education” • Enjoying an inclusive community that embraced us warmly

Highlights from the Me to We GEO Kenya Trip: • Using basic shovels and pick axes, students dug and const- ructed the foundation for the new G5 classroom in a rural school establishing the real work involved in providing quality education options • Participated in an inspiring workshop with students and adults from around the world, led by Craig Kielburger, founder of Me to We and Save the Children, focusing on the power of the individual to make real change • Experienced the wonders of the Maasai Mara and Serengeti National Park through the eyes of a Maasai warrior as we chased a cheetah through the savannah and marvelled over the giraffes, zebra, warthogs and more

• Learned first-hand how the people of rural Kenya live through water walks, weapons training, cooking Kenyanstyle and interacting with the school children

Highlights from Me to We GEO Ecuador Trip: • Building the foundation of a new school building in Shuid • Learning about and making connections with indigenous cultures • Connecting with women and girls’ alternative income group projects • Discovering old Quito and visiting the equator • Travelling on a tributary of the Amazon River deep into the rainforest to Me to We’s Minga Lodge

International-Mindedness At the centre of a Mulgrave education is our desire for students to become true global citizens. We want our students to acquire the personal and social intercultural competencies and dispositions that will allow them to thrive and be happy wherever in the world they find themselves. In addition to embracing a whole-school approach to teaching global citizenship, we offer opportunities for students to immerse themselves in other cultures through language, foreign exchange programmes to France and China, service learning trips, and more.

Language Learning Speaking more than one language enables students to form cross-cultural bonds by facilitating empathy and better communication. With this in mind, Mulgrave has designed a comprehensive language programme with specialist

teachers in French, Mandarin, and Spanish.

We are proud to offer a strong language programme that helps support our mission and vision to equip lifelong learners to thrive in a culturally diverse and interdependent world.

Community Celebrations Mulgrave’s sense of community and friendship is founded on empathy, inclusion, and humility.

Our values are rooted in an understanding of our own and our First Nations’ cultures, a global perspective, and a commitment to social responsibility. Through events like Nowruz/Navroz and Lunar

New Year celebrations, global lunches, as well as exhibits and performances focussed on art and music from around the world, our community comes together throughout the year to learn and celebrate together.

As a result, we strengthen our ties to each other while equipping our students to thrive in a culturally-diverse world.

Service Learning and International Experiences Through the Me to We global outreach trips that we offer, our students have the opportunity to experience life outside of their Canadian contexts. This allows students to learn important lessons about the socio-economic and geopolitical factors that affect our world. The sense of empathy that results from this new understanding further enables young students to develop a global perspective and empowers them as future stewards of our world.

Our exchange trips to France and Shanghai give participating students the chance to immerse themselves in the language and culture they have been studying. The opportunity to apply their learning in an authentic context brings their classroom experiences to life.

STRATEGIC PLAN 2016­—2020: Making Mulgrave Everything We Can Be

Mulgrave’s Strategic Plan lays out a vision and guiding statements for the future of education at our school. It was created after extensive consultation with our stakeholders, and we are pleased to see the ideas in it already taking shape as we start the 2016 academic year.

We look forward to reporting on the progress we make in the years to come.

STRATEGIC PRIORITIES AND GOALS Making education more Personalised so that all students can achieve their potential academically and create a range of university options.

• Goal 1: We will continue to strive to make the learning process more personalised for every student to allow them to achieve their personal best in every area of the academic curriculum.

• Goal 2: We will further improve the range of support services available to students to help them learn and grow into unique, confident, and successful young men and women.

• Goal 3: Within our broad IB framework, we will further increase the range of curriculum and study choices available to students, especially in new and modern subject areas.

Making education more Enriched with 21st-century skills so that all students can systematically develop these key life skills for the future that will differentiate them from other academic high flyers.

Making education more Applied to authentic real-world contexts so that all students are able to apply their skills authentically and further develop an understanding of concepts and ideas in real-world settings.

• Goal 1: We will further develop our focus on ensuring that every student systematically develops a set of effective life skills and personal characteristics alongside their academic success.

• Goal 1: We will ensure that our students have increased exposure to places and people outside of the immediate school setting so that they can understand the real-world contexts for their learning.

• Goal 2: We will ensure that our students increasingly develop important and high-level, modern life skills for the future that will give them a competitive edge.

• Goal 2: We will form more relationships with external organisations to enrich our students’ education in an applied way.

Making education more Extended through enhanced cocurricular opportunities so that all students can follow their interests and passions, further develop their skills, and establish lifelong interests and commitments.

• Goal 1: We will further extend the range of co-curricular opportunities in all divisions of the school, ensuring that our provision evolves according to student need and interest.

• Goal 2: We will strive to take provision in Athletics, Performing Arts, Outdoor Education, Service, and Debating/Public Speaking to a new level. We will focus on excellence and on ensuring that all cocurricular experiences provide opportunities for deep learning.

Making education more International so that all students can live and work happily and successfully in a range of cultures and countries.

• Goal 1: We will ensure all students systematically develop the intercultural skills, attitudes, and values to be true global citizens.

This will include further developing our students’ understanding of cultures, including our own First Nations, and continuing to improve language learning.

• Goal 2: We will extend the range of international and service learning opportunities for our students.

MAKING THE STRATEGIC PLAN HAPPEN We are excited about these ambitious plans to take a Mulgrave education to a new level.

As we work to achieve our goals, we will be: • Focussed on further developing the already high-level skills of our teachers through increased investment in their training, collaboration, and improved feedback processes.

• Further improving the resources and equipment available to teachers.

• Further developing the skills of our senior- and middlelevel leaders who will provide the inspiration and guidance at a detailed level.

• Further improving our specialist facilities in line with our campus plan to support the new and improved education provision in the strategic plan.

• Employing new staff to enhance our current provision and to introduce new courses and support services.

• Further engaging our students and our community in supporting our goals and in providing feedback.

• Continuing to review and learn from worldwide best practice and to evaluate and innovate through the Mulgrave Centre for Innovation.

• Ensuring that we have the financial basis to make operational and capital investments and support bursaries and scholarships.
