The Media Gets It!

Area 51

I’ve been inundated with media requests this past week about MUFON and what we think about various issues related to the UFO topic. These are exciting times. The media has finally figured out that UFOs are real, or perhaps more truthfully the Pentagon is telling them they are, and to everyone’s surprise they are taking it seriously. That’s good news and a serious step in the right direction. They are so serious about the subject that they have even dropped the need for a debunker on every news or interview segment. Just the facts is what they seem to want which is a refreshing change after all these years of debunking, ridicule, and jokes made at our expense.

C

ase in point, I met with the PBS station in San Diego for an interview this week and every question and every topic brought up was serious and to the point. They want to know what MUFON knows, they want the 411, the full story. What a sea change from a short 18 months ago prior to the NYT front page article on the Pentagon’s secret UFO program called AATIP. Man have things changed and it appears there is no turning back. And boy am I on board for that! Then on the heels of the media frenzy that’s building we get a gift given to us by a Facebook blogger who suggested everyone storm Area 51 and another media blitz started. I’ve been fielding calls all week on that one news item alone. Storm Area 51; not a particularly smart idea, but certainly one the public has embraced and taken to heart. People want to know. They want to know what

their government knows about the subject of UFOs and aliens. They want to know what the government isn’t telling them about our space program and extraterrestrial life, and they want to know what it is their $100 billion a year in black budget spending of their tax dollars is going towards. And much of that resides at Area 51. Reporters ask me, why do I think this has garnered so much attention among the American people. Very simply I think that people are tired of being lied to, told to mind their own business, needlessly harassed and/or publicly humiliated all to keep a secret that there are advanced craft flying around our skies and there is not a darn thing we can do about it. I say it is time we stop putting on the charades and instead start putting out the welcome mat. We are definitely NOT alone. l

UFO TRAFFIC REPORT ROGER MARSH, EDITOR Cases of Interest editors, Cassidy Nicholas, Fred Kohler. International case editor, Chuck Reever.

Worldwide news on the latest eyewitness testimony Cases of interest are pulled daily from the MUFON witness database. Most reports are not yet investigated. Final investigation reports may resolve cases as something natural or manmade. Witness testimony is edited for clarity. More detailed reports at our website. Witness says UFO ‘appeared out of thin air’

Witness illustration. Credit: MUFON

A California witness at Sacramento reported watching a rectangle-shaped object hovering over nearby buildings, according to testimony in Case 90347. The witness was driving to get food at 12:30 a.m. on February 21, 2018. “I was driving down the road when out of nowhere I see this big craft appear out of my top left field of view,” the witness stated. “I didn’t have time to think. I was almost dumbfounded at what I was looking at. The craft appeared from out of thin air and hovered at this spot above the buildings about 300 feet away or so.” 6 | AUGUST 2019

The witness described the object. “It had two blue lights that were parallel to each other. The blue lights followed from the front of the craft to the back and were on the sides of it. They were very bright, and I saw this craft the second it appeared. I could make out some sharp features of the craft, but it was like it had some form to it, and at the same time was almost transparent. Then before I could process what had happened, it shot off in a straight line and immediately disappeared as it set into motion. I still can’t believe what I just saw. I had to Google ‘report a UFO’ and sure enough I found this place. I’m really struggling to make sense of this. I hope you guys can use this information and maybe provide me with some information of your own if you have some. I’ll try and draw a sketch later.” California MUFON Field Investigator Valerie Benko closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle. “The witness discussed the general area where he saw the craft and explained he was headed to Jack in the Box for food,” Benko stated in her report. “The witness did state if he had not noticed the blue lights on the side

of the craft, he probably would not even have noticed it. The witness was very shaken up over this experience. He explained they teach you in school this stuff is not real. If you talk about UFOs people will label you as crazy.” Sacramento is the capital city of California and the seat of Sacramento County, population 501,334.

Rectangular UFO reported low over Georgia

Woodstock, Georgia. Credit: Google

A Georgia witness at Woodstock reported watching a large, cylinder-shaped object moving at low altitude, according to testimony in Case 91313. The witness was driving east along Eagle Drive just past Bells Ferry Road

at 9:30 p.m. on February 15, 2018. “Large, long rectangle-shaped object, glowing with various shades of bright orange through surface covered in octagon-shaped windows/exterior shell,” the witness stated. “Appeared far ahead on horizon, flying low and north, having just come from the ridge of Putnam Ford Drive. At about Eagle Drive, it takes a wide turn to the west, taking it over the Etowah HS and Booth MS complex and football stadium, then flies due west, slightly north and parallel to Eagle Drive. I’m still driving east on Eagle Drive, and it passes to my left just before I reach Rose Creek Drive. I look up to my left and I can see it through the tree tops as it passes. It was so big and orange that I couldn’t process in the moment what I was seeing. It seemed whimsical, or psychedelic, like out of a carnival, as it glided by. My first thought was that maybe it was a huge long balloon with orange burners inside, but soon realized that it was too massive and moved too quickly to be a balloon. Its path would’ve taken it over Bells Ferry Road, over Jersey’s and Walmart. Many others had to see it.” Georgia MUFON Chief Investigator Jerry Carlson closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle. “It is clear the witness believes he saw something,” Carlson wrote in his report. “His initial CMS report was very detailed. For such a significant sighting in the middle of a heavily populated urban area, at an early evening time, one would expect numerous witnesses to come forward. However, no other reports were filed. “It is clear that no currently known military or civil aircraft exhibit the properties reported by the witness. Additionally, no other research has identified any natural or manmade objects that could be confused for the object seen by the witness. While there was a report of an orange-colored drone spotted in the area of Hartsfield International Airport the next evening, this only opens the possibility that an orange-colored object in the Atlanta area does in fact exist; however, there is no evidence that ties this aircraft to this particular sighting.

“Therefore, in absence of any evidence to the contrary, the object has been classified as an Unknown UAV.” Woodstock is a city in Cherokee County, Georgia, population 23,896.

on its path west towards Red Rock.” Nevada MUFON State Director Sandra Countiss closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle. “Triangle, hovered over building, turned abruptly and changed direction,” Countiss wrote in her report. “Appeared solid, surface was dark, no other structural features, basketball-sized, blue-green exterior lights and red exterior lights. No emissions or sounds. Possibly a military craft or airplane being tested at Nellis, 15 degrees above the horizon, would flash sequentially, 500 feet at lowest, southwest to west pathway. Background: Mountains.” Las Vegas is the county seat of Clark County, Nevada, population 648,224.

Nevada UFO described as ‘several football fields’ long

A Nevada witness at Las Vegas reported watching and videotaping a “long, flat craft” with three lights, which was hovering and making no sound, according to testimony in Case 90398. The report appears to have followed Case 90404 by several minutes. The witness and a fiancée were driving home after picking up food at 7:17 p.m. on February 23, 2018. “We noticed three lights in the sky, which from a distance, at first glance, appeared to be three planes flying in unison,” the witness stated. “Once the craft came closer and as we got a better view, we saw it was one massive craft. I took my phone out and tried to video it. We were moving, so it was difficult to capture. The craft made no noise, and its lowest altitude appeared to be around 1,000 feet. It stopped and hovered abruptly and then continued

A Nevada witness at Summerlin reported watching a large, slow-moving craft the size of “several football fields,” according to testimony in Case 90404. The witness left home at 7:15 p.m. on February 23, 2018 and began driving west up the hill on Del Webb Drive to the Summit Clubhouse for an event. “I immediately noticed the large craft in front of my car above the houses in front of me because it was flying too low and I thought it was going to crash into the neighborhood,” the witness stated. “I was going 30-35 miles per hour and the craft stayed the same distance from me, so it was also going very slow. I thought when it didn’t crash into any homes that it THE MUFON JOURNAL | 7

was perhaps in trouble trying to land at the Las Vegas airport. However, it continued to move at the same speed but just a tad higher, all the way to the top of the hill where I was going. When I pulled into the parking lot, I saw that the craft turned a little more to the north since it had been traveling west all the way up the hill. The craft had three red lights - one on the left side, one on the right side and one in the middle. This is why I originally thought it might be a large military aircraft, but it was flying too low and there was not a sound coming from the craft. Then as I attempted to make out the shape, it reminded me of the very large V-shaped object I had seen when the craft was over Phoenix, Arizona. The entire sighting took about 12 minutes and the night was very clear.” Nevada MUFON State Director Sandra Countiss closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle. “I called the witness and she was happy to talk about the experience,” Countiss stated in her report. “She was going to dinner at Summit Club in Summerlin along Dale Webb Boulevard when she saw a large, twoto-three blocks wide black plane above her, looking like it would crash into the neighborhood. It made no sound, had no emissions, and had only three red lights on the sides and at the apex of it. It was triangular-shaped, not a chevron, and huge. The red lights were on each side, no wings, and it was going about 35 miles-per-hour, as she was. It did not get ahead of her with speed, just travelled along at the same speed as she did. It was under 500 feet high, close to the ground and just over the roof tops, going from west to northwest. She kept expecting it to crash since she didn’t hear any engine noise and thought it must be going down, but it didn’t. Reminded her of the Phoenix lights, after she thought about it for a while. It went over the summit, changing direction slightly to the northwest, and then was gone. She heard no noise and no emissions were seen. She said she kept trying to make it fit into an airplane or drone mold, but it didn’t, and it was gone when she 8 | AUGUST 2019

realized it might not be one of ‘ours’ at all. She followed it for about 10–12 minutes until she got to the club and stood in the parking lot, watching it go over the summit and disappear. Very interesting and good description by witness.

Wilmington, CA, at 15:45pm, when they observed a flying object heading north on C Street parallel to Harry Bridges Boulevard. The object appeared disc-shaped and emitted green lights/white lights (think a glowing white, greenish saucer) and hovered

horizontally across Harry Bridges northbound. My daughter, who couldn’t get the phone video to start, took two snapshots of the flying object (on the left in the photos, not the right, that is a lamp under a tree). Then she proceeded to record the object as soon she was able to get the camera to work. The footage is only a few seconds, but details its movements. The object disappeared behind a lumber building. My family members were shocked and startled. They phoned me immediately and sent me the video shortly thereafter.”

Summerlin is an affluent master-planned community in the Las Vegas Valley of Southern Nevada, population 100,000.

Glowing discoidal UFO low over California

Southern California MUFON State Director Jeff Krause closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle. “The two witnesses were driving in a car when they spotted an unusual, glowing, disc-shaped object,” Krause stated in his report. “The witnesses stopped and took photos and a short video of the object.” “The witnesses described the object as being the size of a golf ball held at arm’s length and estimated that it was a little over 500 feet from them when first spotted. The witnesses were unable to determine the altitude of the object, but described it as moving in a northwest direction. The witnesses were unable to determine its angular size.”

“I evaluated the photographs and video myself, and all had the EXIF data intact, and were not edited in any way.

A family member filed a report for two others who were driving at 3:47 p.m. on February 26, 2018.

“After evaluation of the photos and video submitted, and interviewing the witnesses twice, I find their testimony to be 100 percent credible. My investigation showed that there were no blimps or other types of airships in the area on that particular night that could be mistaken for a disc. I am closing this case out as Unknown – UAV.”

A Philippines witness at Dasmariñas reported watching a low-flying, triangle-shaped object, according to testimony in Case 90499. The witness was walking along a highway at 5:25 a.m. on March 2, 2018. “I noticed something in the sky,” the witness stated. “There were a couple of dim lights on that flying thing in a V-shape. At first, I thought it was just an airplane, but airplanes do not have that kind of shape. I also thought it was just birds in formation, but it was still too dark for birds to fly. It flew right above me. It was so huge, so it seemed like it was flying low. It moved quietly with no sound at all. And when it went past the trees, it was gone. I was out of words. I jogged so I could check the sky, but it wasn’t there anymore. I was really in shock and I felt weird. I told my boyfriend about it.” CAG International and MUFON Field Investigator Eric Smith closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle. “I could find no corroborating reports of a sighting near the reported time or location,” Smith stated in his report. “I could find no evidence of it being attributable to a weather

A Michigan witness at Muskegon reported watching a low-flying, square-shaped object with U-shaped lights, according to testimony in Case 94597. The witness stepped outside his garage’s side door at 8:30 a.m. on March 2, 2018, and immediately noticed the object. “Only because a small aircraft was crossing it in the sky at the same time,” the witness stated. “Which is why I noticed it. Then I noticed the object. It was square or cube-shaped but flying point first. It had four U-shaped lights, but they were turned at a 90-degree angle. Open end facing left of me, and to the west. It came from the west and went east. It moved slow, like watching a satellite move across the sky. When it finally went beyond the trees and out of sight, I turned around for less than 30 seconds. When I looked back, it was overhead again. And then went to the southeast.” Michigan MUFON CAG Field Investigator Sue Gerberding closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle. “The witness stated the strange object

he saw was crossing the sky from west to east, and the small plane was passing behind it from the south-southwest. The object had ‘strange’ lights and a very black surface; so black that the witness could see the outline of the object against the night sky, lit only by a less than quarter-moon on a clear night. The witness said he has never seen anything like it; he is familiar with the small planes from the local airport, the medivac planes/choppers in the area, and he is a former Army Apache helicopter flight-ops technician (served in the Army from April 2005—December 2006). The object also had four dark-red lights, in an elongated backwards ‘C’ shape; it had a square, flat bottom and was moving point first; the front and back red lights alternated in slow flashing, rhythmic, but not like those on aircraft. The object did not seem to be that ‘tall,’ and moved slowly across the sky, much like a satellite, but it was only at about 1,000 feet or so. It appeared to be the same size as the small plane in the sky (Cessna), though they were at different altitudes; he estimated actual size at between 31–300 feet—it was difficult to judge. It took the object about 10 minutes to cross the sky, before it went over the trees and out of the witness’s field of view. The witness turned and went back into the garage for just a second, and when he turned around and came out again, the object was again in his sky following the same path, but a little farther north this time, not directly overhead. Then the object departed from its path and left, moving to the east/southeast. The object had made no sound. The witness did not report this for months, because he had never seen anything like this and was a little hesitant about reporting such. “In this case there was no obvious explanation. The visual characteristics and travel speed of the object in this case are somewhat unique. Until further evidence is discovered, this object cannot be identified, and remains an unidentified aerial vehicle.” Muskegon is a city in Michigan, population 38,401. THE MUFON JOURNAL | 9

to become insanely hot, the aliens and light disappeared. The temperature, according to the meter in the car, reached 114 degrees. I needed to open the door, which was now possible with the lack of aliens. I cannot remember one hour before the incident. I am not available for contact.” Nebraska MUFON Assistant State Director Kyle Finley closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle.

Elkhorn, Nebraska. Credit: Google

A Nebraska witness at Elkhorn reported watching a “disc of light,” followed by their vehicle being engulfed in light and a possible alien encounter, according to testimony in Case 90584. The witness was out driving in search of UFOs at 11:30 p.m. on March 3, 2018. “This was probably about my hundredth search for UFOs,” the witness stated. “Since about 2001, I have gone out driving near my home every once in a while. I have never, before this, encountered anything more than a probably misidentified ball of light. Needless to say, I succeeded last Saturday night.” The witness was driving in a remote area of rural Douglas County, somewhere to the north of Elkhorn. “When I first noticed the object, it was a disc of light in the sky off to the west. It disappeared after approximately five seconds. Approximately 30 seconds later, my car was engulfed in light. Almost immediately afterward, a large-ish (18-wheeler size?) disc of light similar to incandescent bulb warm light had landed in front of me. After about a minute, a bright blue ball (then varying shape) of light (entity?) appeared in my car on the passenger’s seat next to me. It was about six feet tall and an irregular shape. The being(?) constantly varied in shape, although more or less taking the shape of the seat it was on. However, it never was anything other than a blue light. About 30 seconds later, my car overheated, stopped, and nearly injured me. As soon as the car began 10 | AUGUST 2019

“Very interesting case with no hard evidence,” Finley wrote in his report. “Witness doesn’t wish to be contacted for additional information.”

“Due to the lack of a witness interview, my conclusion is based on the original information provided,” Owens and Owens stated in their report. “The object was described as a white triangular object travelling west and then abruptly turning southwest before disappearing out of sight. The wind direction was north-northeast, which means the object was travelling contrary to the prevailing winds and also made a change of direction.”

Elkhorn is a neighborhood on the western edge of the city of Omaha, Nebraska, population 6,062.

An Alabama witness at Birmingham reported watching a white, triangle-shaped object “gliding over the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) campus,” according to testimony in Case 90540. The witness was walking down 13th Street on the UAB campus at 5:35 p.m. on March 3, 2018. “I observed a white triangular craft moving at a strange pace at high altitude,” the witness stated. “I watched it head west, then abruptly southwest. I watched until it was out of vision.” Alabama Michigan CAG Field Investigators Calvin Owens and Mary Owens closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle.

A North Carolina witness at Webster reported a low-flying, square-shaped object that moved directly overhead, according to testimony in Case 91103. The witness was driving to work at 11:14 p.m. on March 5, 2018, when bright lights were first noticed. “I first thought it was a house someone just moved into on a mountain,” the witness stated. “As I got closer, I then noticed there was separation between the lights and the mountain. I drove just a little farther and noticed how slow it was moving. I stopped in the middle of the road and looked to see what time it was, and it was 11:17 then. This is a very windy road. I turned my radio off and rolled the

windows down and got my phone to take a picture. I didn’t have any data on it, so I couldn’t take a picture. It was very low and didn’t make a bit of noise. It was wide ‘cause there was a light on each end and also about six to eight in the middle. I couldn’t tell if it was long ‘cause there were no lights. It wasn’t foggy but this was really weird.” The witness then noticed something unusual around the object. “When it was almost above me there was fog in the immediate area, mostly around the object. Not on the ground or close to me. I say fog because I couldn’t smell any smoke. It wasn’t thick and I could see the lights clearly. It floated in a straight line from when I first noticed it and where I stopped, it floated right over me. I say floated because it was moving so slow. I looked out of my passenger window and it went on its way. I couldn’t believe it and wanted to call the sheriff ’s office, but thought they might think I was crazy. There is a very small airport that it was headed toward, but would have had to ascend to get that high to land. I never heard it accelerate. I called the airport the next day to see if anything had landed there the night before, and they said no. I was amazed that I saw it and that it was so low. I told some of my co-workers about it and asked if anyone else had seen it. None did.” North Carolina MUFON State Director David Glidewell closed this case as an Unknown-Other. “Witness was on his way to work on a very windy mountain road about 11:17 p.m. and noticed some bright lights,” Glidewell wrote in his report. “At first, he thought they might be house lights, but he noticed there was separation of the lights from the mountain. He noticed there were two bright lights on each end and multiple lights between them. He was unable to see if there was any height to what he was observing—only the width. Witness reported fog around the lights and that the lights floated over his vehicle. “Witness reports two main lights were about 90 feet apart. The witness was

unable to determine any height to the lights. The lights ‘floated’ low in the sky from north to south and over the witness location on Little Savannah Road toward the Jackson County Airport. “Based on the information provided by the witness, the best fit case disposition would be Unknown-Other (odd-moving lights near the ground, strange floating objects).” Webster is a town in Jackson County, North Carolina, population 363.

Utah UFO described as ‘size of a stadium’

Witness image. Credit: MUFON

A Utah witness at West Jordan reported watching a “white ship the size of a stadium,” according to testimony in Case 93750. The witness was at a park flying a drone at 10:42 a.m. on March 6, 2018. “I noticed a huge, white mother ship flat like a Frisbee shape,” the witness stated. “It had a com trail spreading out from behind it as wide as a twomile spread. As I was positioning my drone to film this thing, I noticed a little door open on the front of the white ship. This ship was about the size of a stadium. A smaller black ship flew out of the front of the mother ship. The black ship had blue and pink lights that did not flash. “It appeared to have tail wings on it. It made no sound. It was moving about Mach 5. The small black ship flew down towards me and buzzed the cell towers on the south side of the park, on the right side of me. My drone was hit with some emp and

crashed. But not before I was able to get some pictures of both of the ships. “After buzzing around the cell towers, the small ship flew back up to the huge, white mother ship. Then I watched the white ship literally disappear up into the sky. I downloaded the SD card footage into my laptop so I could zoom. The pictures are up close.” Utah MUFON State Director Michael Barrette closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle. “I spoke with the witness during the evening of August 1, 2018 about his sighting,” Barrette stated in his report. “He was very glad that someone actually would talk to him about it. He stated that he saw a large, circular white craft, approximately the size of a football field, heading towards him while he was flying a drone that he had just gotten for his birthday. Witness stated that he saw a black, round (saucer-type) craft come out of the white object, come down to his position and fly around him and stop by some cell towers that were in the area. Like the black craft was searching for something. Witness stated that when the black craft came into his area, that the drone lost its flight characteristics and crash-landed. The craft then came back to the witness and flew over him approximately 100 feet at a speed approaching Mach 5. Witness stated that he did not hear any engine noises, only the rushing of the air as the craft flew past him. “Witness stated he believed that the white craft was 15,000 to 30,000 feet above ground level. He went on to state that when the craft departed his area and went back to the white craft, a door of some type opened, and the black craft disappeared inside. Witness went on to say that the white object left the area and just disappeared as it was heading in a southerly direction. Witness stated that he did not have any loss of time.” West Jordan is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah, population 103,712. l

UFO CASES OF INTEREST: 2019 EDITION New Second Edition offers the best reports of 2018 by Roger Marsh, Editor

T

he Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) had 7,665 case reports in 2018. That’s more than 600 reports a month. And 5,160 were in the United States. The Cases of Interest Team waited the allowed 90 investigation-days and reviewed only closed cases with one of three designations: Unknown Aerial Object, Unknown-Other, or Information Only. The first two classifications are the best reports—but we added Information Only cases because many of these include important information for further study. Only cases that occurred in 2018 were reviewed. We had a long list of criteria for choosing cases. Especially liked cases under 100 feet from the witness; or under 500 feet, where the witness got a good look at the object. We liked two or more witnesses. We liked object details and a witness’s background. The team weeded through 1,895 cases and chose 297 this year. The resulting data collected supports many longknown UFO trends. The object remains mostly silent, moves through space, air and water without resistance, can hover in place, stop on a dime, travel great distances in a short time, and can be one of a wide range of sizes and shapes. They tend to move about in groups of two or more. Few location patterns are known as sightings seem to occur at random, lasting two to three minutes. Exit patterns continue to vary from slowly moving away until the witness’s view is obscured, to the object zooming away and disappearing into space in a matter of seconds. The following are 2018 database patterns from these 297 cases.

PROXIMITY TO OBJECT

How close did our witnesses get to the objects? The group revealed 63 cases under 100 feet distant (or 21 percent); 87 cases under 500 feet (29 percent); and 53 cases under 1,000 feet (17 percent). Our witnesses were watching the objects at or under 1,000 feet in 67 percent of the cases.

12 | AUGUST 2019

COMMON DETAILS

Some of the statistics are big numbers. Our witnesses told us the objects hovered in 85 cases or 28.6 percent of the time: A very common thread. In 86 cases, or nearly 29 percent of the time, the witness was either driving a vehicle or riding as a passenger when the event occurred. In 84 cases, the witness described seeing a triangle shape—the largest shape selection this year. Other stats are small numbers but reveal recurring trends over the years. In three cases, or just 1 percent of the time, witnesses said the objects chased them. Now we know there’s no known epidemic of UFOs chasing humans. But were these witnesses bothered by the experience? Simply by being close to a UFO or watching one at a distance?

PHYSICAL EFFECTS

When we asked about physical effects—our witnesses made 24 observations from 14 different cases—just less than 5 percent of the cases—describing: Calm and restraint, disorientation, dizziness. Thought of the idea they should not take a picture. Their ears rang, eyes felt hurt or irritated. Had a feeling the entity was not evil. They felt frozen, overwhelmed, seen by the entity. Their lower lip burned. They were mesmerized, had a migraine headache, felt nausea, panic, rage. Their throat and mouth were sore. They experienced a time loss. Another felt they were in a trance. Seven reports include mention of electronics affected at the ground level.

FEAR FACTOR

While directly feeling ill effects from a UFO would be quite frightening, some witnesses were outright afraid during their encounters. Twelve witnesses reported being at some level of fright during their episodes.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO

Classically, UFO photography and video are a wretched mess. Can’t anyone get a high definition photo? Can just

one person hold the camera steady during a video shoot? Thirty-two witnesses reported taking one or more object photos. Seventeen reported taking video. This year’s collection contains its fair share of the fuzzy and the damned, but there are a few worth looking at.

CLOAKING

Cloaking objects seem to be on the rise with 19 cases (or 6 percent) describing various phases of the entire craft disappearing or fading away. Other object surface observations include: angular lines, appendages, arched ribs, an aura, appeared to be breathing, chrome-like, dark, edges blurry, filmy mist, fog around it, fuzzy, glass-like, matte-like, metal-paned glass, metallic, misty, a pattern of black dots, perpetual kinetic motion, pink burning atmosphere, plated, reddish webbing, reflecting light, seamless, shiny, silvery, skin pattern, smooth bottom, strips of metal fluttering off, watery ripples, and windows.

REPEATING PATTERNS

Witnesses again this year are revealing the repeating pattern that UFOs come in all sizes – from something you might hold in the palm of your hand to objects measuring three or four football fields long. And while we have repeating patterns on shape, the triangle maintains its lead as the most commonly reported shape. But it would almost seem no two UFOs are identical. Another repeating pattern is that UFOs do not follow our mass production style of supply and demand. The other most common repeating pattern is that, despite shape and size, the object can move great distances in very short time spans, can stop on a dime, hover in place, and all of the above without making a sound. Then in smaller groups, witnesses are reporting electrical failures at the ground level, drained batteries, radio interference, reducing the chances of good, high definition photography. Sometimes the ground effects are weirder. Some witnesses report loss of time, disorientation, an awareness of the total lack of natural sound, or situations where other people around do not seem to be aware of the object. The Object Index is where the data begins to get most interesting. We cover object: altitude, behavior, color, light color, light intensity, lighting motion, movement, multiples, shape, size, sound, structure, and surface. The Site Index covers case details at the scene, including: animals effected, beams of light to the ground, electronics effected, entities seen, military intervention, sounds and other oddities. The Witness Index data includes: background, communication with object, drivers or vehicle passengers, fright details, photo or video taken, and physical affects.

Case 95323 witness illustration. October 2, 2018.

WITNESS BACKGROUND

Witness testimony from any location or background is important, but we did take note in particular cases where a background might strengthen a case. Twenty-four of our witnesses identified as: aircraft enthusiast, air traffic controller, engineer, flight navigator, law enforcement, military, pilot, or police.

COMMUNICATED WITH OBJECT

Another recurring trend is the witness feeling as though they had a communication connection with the object. While it’s described in various ways, in 11 cases this year witnesses revealed what happened.

THE MILITARY

A military presence during cases continues to repeat year after year. Seven reports say they were near a military base when the sighting occurred. Six witnesses reported military aircraft. Two reported military helicopters.

WITNESS OVERVIEW

The witness numbers reporting to MUFON are guesstimated at about one in 50. For every case filed, there are most likely 49 more cases going unreported or filed elsewhere. As a single database, the MUFON UFO Index – naming cases of interest – appears to be the largest collection of its kind on the planet. The organization, prior to 2017, did few tracking projects where the larger data was studied and manipulated. Keywords were applied here to each case where necessary in four index areas: Location, Object, Site and Witness. A Location Index was obvious so that specific city-state or country cases could be reviewed together. One reader simply wants cases close to the hometown. A researcher is reviewing all triangle-shaped object cases in one region. We can also study sightings by the nearest population levels. 14 | AUGUST 2019

Reviewed as a whole, the 2018 data is a continuing set of encounter details describing mostly what we already know. It’s interesting at first on exactly where and when the encounters occurred. Many witnesses were in vulnerable, rural locations, baffled by what they were experiencing. Some were in highly populated areas wondering why there weren’t more witnesses. The data colors itself when the patterns are studied—painting dozens of intimate portraits of humans and UFOs interacting at random locations. In most of the cases, it seems the object is on a surveillance mission of some sort with little or no regard to the humans watching. While there is a percentage of cases significantly high enough to study where communication with the object is noted—the average case reports that the object simply moves away without bothering the witness. In a rather high number of cases, the witness reports that had they not been looking in that very spot, at that very time, the object would never have been noticed. With no sound emissions, even with body lighting, the object is often just never seen by people on the street. And there is a significant number of cases annually wherein witnesses report watching the objects cloak themselves. Somewhat amusing is the number of witnesses who say it appeared the objects were having difficulties with their cloaking devices as they were turning the objects on and off repeatedly. Let’s hope Scotty is in the engine room rearranging energy sources so the captain can get to a warp drive. The end of the story this year is that we have a worldwide UFO epidemic most likely witnessed by less than one percent of the worldwide population annually. It’s like counting the number of people worldwide who had snake bites last year or only people killed in incidents involving an international waterway during a British holiday after 5 p.m. UFOs are real. Research continues. We wonder about the intelligence behind objects. Purchase of UFO Cases of Interest: 2019 Edition helps keep the research going. s of this date ( July 1), MADAR has 70 devices in various stages of deployment, with 52 running, 10 in foreign countries. It is estimated that we will have 20 more DataProbes in September and we should have our goal of one hundred online by the end of the year. As the result of another large purchase of needed circuit boards, we were unable to make our goal and deadline of enough funds to attend the annual MUFON International UFO Symposium on July 26-28. However, we are now funded and have two MADAR reps going to the International UFO Conference at Phoenix, Arizona, on September 3-7, 2019. Paul Browning and Paul Anzalone will have a bannered booth set up by Wednesday morning. As I write this report we are preparing a MADAR device to be placed and operated at Phoenix, the site of a major incident referred to as the “Phoenix Lights.” The MADAR-III DataProbes will be sold and programmed right on the spot, ready to plug and play when the operators return to their respective home states. The latest two MADAR-III DataProbes are Joseph Jordan’s second unit in South Korea (Node 159), and Jorge Landrian’s device (Node 123) at Wichita, Kansas. My five-unit array in southern Indiana/Illinois now includes Evansville, Indiana, and is operated

by Scott Paul. The weather hasn’t been a good factor in sighting correlations, but we’re now operating on Plan 61, which is an improved software version, and the hits we had before we adjusted the system were phenomenal in June. In the months ahead we anticipate a quantum leap in data.

ONEonONE DINAH LECHNER

with Beverly Trout Today, the MUFON Journal is speaking with Beverly Trout, Assistant State Director of Iowa and a member of the Star Team. Beverly truly enjoys allowing extensive Q & A from audiences when she speaks in public about UFOs. She has found that involving the audience deepens their learning experience, as well as her own. For an eight-year period in the 1990s, Beverly taught literally thousands of people to line dance in the various adult educational systems in the central Iowa area, as well as for other organizations. Her hobby includes ballroom dancing. In 2008, she retired after working for an attorney for many years. JOURNAL: Beverly, the first thing I

noticed is that you have a 4-digit MUFON member number. You have been part of this organization for a while. Do you remember when it all started for you with MUFON?

BT: Since you mentioned it. Yes, I have

been around since 1991. In the spring of 1992, I became a Field Investigator. I have served as Iowa State Director from 1995–2006. Presently, I am the Chief Investigator and ASD for Iowa MUFON. 16 | AUGUST 2019

As I just mentioned, my investigation experience began in April, 1992, presently spanning over 27 years. I have investigated hundreds of cases under the very welcome MUFON umbrella. On a per-capita basis, Iowa has been noted as having hosted a large number of triangle-type sightings. For example, in 2015, a triangle-shaped object was sighted in eastern Iowa at an altitude of 75 feet. It was viewed from approximately 270 feet by the two witnesses. It was CMS Case 69105 and would be listed among MUFON’s top five cases for 2015. In the same year, multiple witnesses reported 14 triangles over Britt, Iowa, during a fourand-a-half hour time span in CMS Case 71566. Please note, Iowa has had its share of disc and rectangle cases.

BT: My own experience has provided a zone of communication in which I am able to encourage a greater sense of “calm” and ability to “cope” among those who approach me directly. Frankly, when witnesses express appreciation for my listening and input, I quickly reassure them that our interaction is filled with a huge reciprocal value because I also learn, and benefit, as well. Also, I have interacted with and investigated many “encounter” cases that have come to me directly from those who have chosen not to report their experiences to any organization. Many of the direct cases have evolved into an ongoing relationship with many of these witnesses. As the witness experiences continue, our dialogue also continues.

JOURNAL: When someone like your-

JOURNAL: Several of my folks here in

BT: I’m a long-time “experiencer” from childhood, so there came a time when the intensity of my experiences seemed to turn on a “switch” in my life direction.

BT: What I found to be of great value in the investigative process is my decades of long research into the paranormal, with my subsequent understanding of the importance of knowing the difference between paranormal experiences and UFO screen memories. Incidentally, I highly recommend the Monroe Institute. On six occasions, I

self finds a reason to become a UFO investigator, it’s interesting to examine the “trigger” that prompts such involvement. Do you recall this “trigger” in your own experience?

JOURNAL: As a long-time experiencer,

how has this helped in your research and investigations with MUFON and ufology?

Florida have used the resources at the Monroe Institute. Tell us about your interest in this and how it can help with ERT cases as well as other witness reports that you have investigated.

was able to attend Monroe’s five-day Exploration-of-Consciousness residential programs. I have found the benefit I received quite rewarding and very useful in my present research. JOURNAL: Beverly, just what do you

mean when you mention UFO screen memories and the paranormal?

BT: This is one example of the difference between the paranormal and UFO screen memories:

Strictly Paranormal Example: A witness, age five, frequently reports a “friend” in her environment. This is met with parental disapproval. One day at her grandparents’ home, she again reported the presence of her friend, whom she has named “Peter.” Once again, the family shows disapproval with words and frowns. Suddenly, the young witness tosses the ball she’d been holding, and the ball disappears! After much searching, the ball could not be found. Now, let’s fast-forward 50 years. The witness sits and faces a professional psychic who has just arrived in her city. She’s told the psychic nothing, yet his opening statement is, “Well, I guess I’m supposed to tell you this. Your guide says he’s got your ball!” Strictly UFO Screen Memory: A father and teenage son decide to go hunting. It’s a winter day with fresh snow on the ground. As they come up over a rise and look down toward a creek bed, they’re amazed to see a “wolf ” repeatedly dashing frantically back and forth, before finally calmly leaving the area. Father turns to his son and asks, “Did you see what I saw?” The son replies, “I saw a wolf.” The screen memory at this point then becomes a real issue. Father and son rush down to the creek area and found

there were no visible wolf tracks in the snow. They’ve just witnessed bizarre activity with no evidential trace, at least this is their perception. The “markers” during this experience point to UFO screen memory. Something totally different was actually taking place; we know not what. JOURNAL: You mentioned being an

experiencer since early childhood. Have you done research into this area and what are your findings?

BT: I have a few comments from my own experiences as well as the indepth research of others, which has convinced me of the following. We need to be willing to learn from and better understand UFO occupants whom we call aliens. It’s even possible that we might gain a somewhat broader perspective on what we have considered objectionable procedures.

Something else to consider, the AMA medical symbol or logo known as a “caduceus” consists of serpents on a staff. JOURNAL: Can you tell us more? BT: On occasion from my research, experiencers can participate in onboard learning on a craft. Some witnesses I have encountered have confided that they have been required to temporarily function as part of the onboard team, even to the extent of being required to operate the ship. JOURNAL: I know you have some

thoughts on disclosure. Can you tell us your view?

I understand that the many alien groups who are present in our planet’s environment are a “mixed bag,” so to speak, some friendly, some not so much. I have investigated cases that bear out that assessment. However, in public appearances, I am frequently asked about the aliens who are labeled “Reptilian.” I paint no group with a negative broad brush. I reply as follows, “All human brains contain the Reptilian cortex. In all ancient civilizations, the Serpent is a big player. Eastern thought talks about ‘Kundalini’ energy available in the human body. The West is apt to refer to this energy as ‘chakra’ centers operating through the body’s endocrine gland system. It’s interesting to note that a common label for the Kundalini is ‘Serpent Energy.’ ”

BT: Regarding the broad subject of disclosure, I am not fond of controlled narratives from the intelligence community, nor the military-industrial complex. My own research and investigations tell me much. Its frontline research has been carried on for many years. I’ve never watched Star Trek and am not a fan of science fiction. There is nothing in the arena of UFO fiction that holds any appeal for me, whether peddled from the media, or from officialdom. In short, the truth about UFOs and their occupants is found on the frontline of investigation and the work we do. JOURNAL: Beverly, thank you so

much for your work with MUFON and sitting down with me for the MUFON One-On-One. l

DIA Defense Intelligence Agency entanglement a physical phenomenon that occurs when pairs or a group of subatomic particles interact such that the quantum state of each particle cannot be described independently of the state of the other(s) even though the particles are separated by a vast distance. Therefore, the quantum state of the particle must be described as a system as a whole. ETI Extraterrestrial Intelligence photon a wave-particle of light. Can be either a particle or a wave. polarized light light that is transmitted through certain media (such as a crystal or Polaroid sunglasses) so that all light vibrations are restricted to a single plane (in this event, vertical or horizontal). quantum a fixed, elemental unit, as of energy, angular momentum, etc. quantum mechanics a physical theory that describes the motion of objects by the principles of quantum theory. Sometimes known as “QM.”

“Long Distance” ETI Communication? (for those who missed out on both the 1998 announcement and its significance)

Background When I was a young boy in the early 1950s, my father, who was not a scientist, took me outdoors to view the Moon through our three-inch refractor. He asked me how long it would take a flashlight beam to “hit” the Moon. I thought that it would be instantaneous, so I said, “Real fast—zero time.” My father then told me that, in fact, it would take about a second-and-a-half since light from my flashlight traveled at a limited speed. He then told me about Albert Einstein, that light could only go just so fast and that “nothing could go faster than light.” In September 1966, the “small screen” (then, our 21-inch, “low-def ” color TV) featured the first episode of Star Trek. In later episodes, there were occasional scenes when Captain James T. Kirk received a “subspace frequency” communication from Star Fleet Command in San Francisco. Of course, the Enterprise was not in low-Earth orbit. It was out quite some distance away in an undesirable region of the Beta Quadrant.1 Apparently, they had a type of advanced form of Skype working on the Enterprise so that they could carry on a conversation in real time separated by light-year distances. Remembering what my father had told me 15 years earlier, just how did subspace work, anyway? That’s the subject of this article.

quantum theory a theory that energy is not abs orbed or radiated continuously but instead discontinuously and only in multiples of definite, individual units called quanta. superluminal faster than the speed of light.

Lt. Uhura and Kirk Receive a Subspace Communication2

SETI and Carl Sagan Some readers of the Journal will recall endless, past articles about various organizations generally known as SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). In 18 | AUGUST 2019

1960, Cornell University astronomer Frank Drake performed the first modern SETI experiment, called Project Ozma. Drake used a radio telescope at Green Bank in West Virginia to examine the stars Tau Ceti and Epsilon near the region of the radio spectrum in the proximity to the hydrogen spectral lines. Drake assumed that the hydrogen frequency was the most likely one for ETI interstellar radio transmissions, but he found nothing whatsoever. Soviet scientists also took a strong interest in SETI during the 1960s and performed a number of searches using their radio telescopes in the hope of picking up ETI radio signals. Soviet astronomer I. S. Shklovskii and Carl Sagan wrote the best-selling book Intelligent Life in the Universe3, and I still have my copy. To date, no announcement of ETI radio contact has been announced by any of the SETI teams (or any other agency for that matter). Conclusion: perhaps ETIs don’t use radio communication. If you are near my age, you’ll remember the late Carl Sagan’s TV show, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, that aired first in 1980, 14 years after Star Trek premiered. On Cosmos, Sagan would, famously, say that there were “billions and billions of stars.” He went on to say that he believed that some planets of distant star systems were inhabited by advanced intelligent beings. But, he said, it was impossible that those beings were visiting Earth since the distances are so immense; even if they could travel at a significant fraction of the speed of light, it would take them centuries to arrive on Earth.

Sagan and JPL’s Viking Spacecraft4

Let’s say that you’re on Zeta Reticuli 2 and you’re the commander of the Zeta Star Fleet. You send out your warp speed starships in the direction of the Andromeda Galaxy. They’re gone awhile and you figure that you should contact them to see what they’re up to. Do you send out a radio signal (first proposed by Nikola Tesla in 1893) that travels at the speed of light? No, you want instantaneous communication, so you use another means that the Zetas developed a thousand years earlier: subspace communication. After all, if you have warp speed starships, radio signals will never catch up with them (!).

Quantum Mechanics Well, now we’re back where we started: nothing can go faster than the speed of light, right? Wrong. Now we get into the nitty-gritty of quantum mechanics, the study of the very small—smaller even than protons and neutrons. We’re talking really small: subatomic particles such as quarks, neutrinos and bosons.5 Without consuming all of the pages in this issue of the Journal, let me just give an overview of what quantum mechanics entails. The best definition of quantum mechanics that I know of comes from Wikipedia:6 “Quantum mechanics (QM); also known as quantum physics, quantum theory, the wave mechanical model, or matrix mechanics, including quantum field theory, is a fundamental theory in physics which describes nature at the smallest scales of energy levels of atoms and subatomic particles. “Classical physics, the physics existing before quantum mechanics, describes nature at ordinary (macroscopic) scale. Most theories in classical physics can be derived from quantum mechanics as an approximation valid at large (macroscopic) scale. Quantum mechanics differs from classical physics in that energy, momentum, angular momentum and other quantities of a system are restricted to discrete values (quantization); objects have characteristics of both particles and waves (wave-particle duality); and there are limits to the precision with which quantities can be measured (uncertainty principle). “Quantum mechanics gradually arose from theories to explain observations which could not be reconciled with classical physics, such as Max Planck’s solution in 1900 to the black body radiation problem . . . Early quantum theory was profoundly re-conceived in the mid-1920s by Erwin Schrödinger, Werner Heisenberg, Max Born and others. The modern theory is [represented] in various mathematical [formulas]. In one of them, a mathematical function, the wave function, provides information about the probability amplitude of position, momentum, and other physical properties of a particle.” Wow! I know, I know; that was more than a mouthful. There’s no easy way to explain this phenomenon. Science isn’t easy. That’s why I studied engineering instead.

Quantum Entanglement: Future “Subspace” Communication? Imagine that you have a coin in both hands. You flip one coin and it’s heads. Then, as a result the coin in the other hand—automatically—is always tails. That’s what happens when two quantum particles, say, a photon that you determine to have a vertical polarization automatically determines that a second photon is horizontally polarized. This phenomenon is called entanglement. Entanglement was first postulated by Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. He predicted this phenomenon as the solution to what happens when two quantum particles interact together and are later separated.7 In 1998 the physics world was stunned by experimental proof of what Einstein called “spooky action at a distance.” It wasn’t the first time that experiments had demonstrated the spooky phenomenon known as quantum entanglement. At the University of Geneva, Switzerland, Wolfgang Tittel, Jürgen Brendel, Hugo Zbinden and Nicolas Gisin successfully measured the entanglement of pairs of photons (wave-particles of light). Each photon of the pair was separated by 10 kilometers (3.8 miles).8 The Swiss team sent photons through fiber optical cables9 in the underground tunnels of greater Geneva. Their experiment is depicted in the illustration below.

“know” that the first is being observed—even if the pair is separated by a vast distance. As a result, quantum information is not stored once with the first particle, but is crosslinked and responsive to the second particle. But some scientists were still skeptical. In 2001 American teams of particle physicists closed the remaining “loophole” that the skeptics took issue with by capturing every paired photon in a beryllium-based experiment. From their work, they proved that quantum information was entangled. In 2007, Anton Zeilinger, a professor at the University of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences and a pioneer in quantum entanglement, communicated using entangled photons over a 144-kilometer (89 miles) distance. According to Joanne Baker, Ph.D., Physics, and editor of Nature, “Entanglement is now being investigated for long-distance quantum communication.”11 According to Baker, Zeilinger has “described the correlated polarizations of photon pairs used in experiments as like a pair of dice that always land on matching numbers. Zeilinger’s group has held many records—for the longest distance over which entangled photons have been sent and for the number of photons entangled. In 1997 Zeilinger demonstrated quantum teleportation—the imprinting of a quantum state from one onto a second entangled particle.”12 In concluding, “So there is a link between complementarity [of photon pairs] and non-local [meaning at a vast distance] effects in quantum physics.” [emphasis added] Baker concludes that “Quantum entanglement and faster-thanlight communication does happen.”13

Generation of Two Entangled Photons10

In the 1998 experiment, light (via a laser beam) was transmitted through a crystal, and it emerged in the form of a pair of entangled photons. One photon (right, represented by a light green “+”) was vertically polarized. The other photon of the pair (left, also shown as a light green “+”) was horizontally polarized (polarization is represented as the figure “8” cones) . It was shown that by observing (measuring) one of the particles, the other of the pair seems to 20| AUGUST 2019

In 1993 Jan Harzan and I had the opportunity to hear the late Ben Rich, former president of the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, speak in a packed UCLA auditorium. After the lecture and Q&A, Jan approached Rich privately and asked how UFOs worked. Rich asked, “How does ESP work? Jan replied, without a lot of thinking, “All points in space and time are connected?” Rich shot back and said, “That’s how it works!”14 I suggest that he meant that literally—that there’s a universal energy field connecting all parts of the Universe. Perhaps this is what is now referred to as “dark energy.” This doesn’t mean that we can now communicate instantaneously to Zeta Reticuli, but at some future time it may mean more than what it appears to be today. Not to put too fine a point on this, but it would seem that quantum entanglement may be the solution, a la Star Trek, leading to the real world, “subspace” communications of the future.

Leaked DIA Document To many readers, this article may appear to be little more than pure speculation. But as reported by Dr. Robert M. Wood in the December 2018 issue of the MUFON Journal15, a 47-page DIA briefing document was leaked to a radio show host in June 2017. Dr. Wood’s conclusion is that it is authentic, and, if so, it provided a broad overview of the official history of extraterrestrial contact and implicated scientist Nikola Tesla as a participant in those events. In his 2019 book, US Air Force Secret Space Program: Shifting Extraterrestrial Alliances & Space Force16, Michael E. Salla, Ph.D., makes the following revelation: “The briefing document describes what happened as a result of Tesla’s experiments: “The extraterrestrial intelligence (EI’s) attempted to respond to [Tesla’s] transmissions in a form of binary code that they routinely usefor long range communications (evidently these energies act instantly at a distance and are not limited to the speed of light) and asked that he cease sending.”17 [emphasis added] “Significantly, the briefing document is acknowledging that the communications were instantaneous and that the speed of light is not anabsolute limit, at least for the kind of communication used by the aliens.”18

Best Guess As To How This Works So, how does this work? In an email to this writer in July 2019, Michael Salla postulated the following: “My best guess is that at the Planck length level of reality, where the quantum foam is found to spontaneously appear and disappear, ETs have worked out a way of imprinting it with frequencies and binary codes that appear instantly all over the universe. Subspace communication then becomes a means of detecting the codes/frequencies at the Planck length. Voila, instantaneous communication becomes possible.“19

During the dark ages, my 7th grade science teacher told me that atoms were made of protons, neutrons and electrons. Today, scientists will tell you that there are three types of particles: hadrons, leptons and bosons. Hadrons are protons or neutrons, and they are composed of even smaller particles called quarks. Leptons include electrons, muons, taus and neutrinos. Bosons include photons, gluons and Higgs. Each hadron and lepton has a corresponding anti-particle. Anti-particles are what is called anti-matter. Anti-matter (the exotic stuff that powered Star Trek’s Enterprise) will be the subject of an, as yet, unwritten NewScience article. Sometime in the future, perhaps, they will discover even more particles. Confusing isn’t it?

Optical fibers are used to transmit photons as they offer less resistance than other means, and they can be bent around corners. Light travels through glass or plastic optical fibers at about two-thirds the speed of light in a vacuum. According to the late Colonel Philip J. Corso, optical fibers were one of the most significant technologies discovered in the Roswell crash-retrieval of 1947 (The Day After Roswell, Col. Philip J. Corso with William J. Birnes, Gallery Books, 1997).

Walking Back H.G. Wells

S

ince 1898, humanity has been traumatized by memories of its near extinction at the hands of leathery, tentacled, murderous invaders from Mars. And this trauma is just a literary effect of H.G. Wells’s novel The War of the Worlds. Imagine the trauma a real Martian invasion could have wrought. Wells’s chilling story is a landmark in the history of ideas. Our thinking on alien intervention has tended towards the apocalyptic ever since it went to press. Though we don’t have an actual historical invasion from outer space for study, we aren’t entirely dependent on science fiction to inform our thinking. Some UFO sightings present familiar military characteristics. Our (Earth’s) classical international law is divided between the law of war and law of peace. Relations between countries are usually governed by peacetime rules, shift to rules of war during military conflict, and finally reset to peacetime rules at the end of hostilities. This model is less than perfect and sometimes hard to apply, as smaller-scale clashes don’t always lead to wider conflict, and military power is frequently put to work in peacetime. To offer a few examples: naval vessels sail politically disputed international waterways to assert freedom of navigation, military ground forces conduct maneuvers to demonstrate readiness and resolve to defend national borders,

military aircraft perform at international air shows to demonstrate aeronautical prowess. Certainly not acts of war, but means sometimes employed to demonstrate hard power options. Generations of UFO reports suggest that extraterrestrial visitors—like terrestrial armed forces—may be putting on hard power demonstrations here on Earth.

H.G. Wells deserves credit for getting it partly right based on the evidence available to date. Military power is sometimes used in peacetime to caution and deter opponents who aren’t necessarily outright enemies. Some reported UFO behavior plausibly falls in this category. If so, this offers cautionary hints that some extraterrestrials may view us as less than friends.

Consider behaviors said to manifest in some UFO sightings: mysterious objects engaging military aircraft with maneuvers far exceeding capabilities known to aeronautics, unknown hovering craft shutting down nuclear missile launch systems, clusters of unidentifiable craft sailing over cities in apparent convoys. None of these activities point inexorably towards full-blown planetary invasion. However, they don’t point inexorably away from lesser forms of interplanetary muscle-flexing either.

They aren’t invading, but may be probing our military capabilities and showing off their own. We know from terrestrial experience that lines between unexceptional peacetime maneuvers and dangerously escalating military confrontations are sometimes thin. We don’t know where extraterrestrials might draw theirs. We can comfortably walk back H.G. Wells’s harrowing science fiction tale of devastating alien intervention, but in the interest of real-world planetary protection we should ask if it’s safe to fully discard the prospect. l
