Taslim Ahammad for MDXSU Vice President Business and Law Profile of Taslim I am a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) student at Middlesex University, London. My area of research is blended learning in Labour Law & Human Resource Management focusing on “workplace fire and safety”. Prior to this, I have obtained an MA degree in HRM from the same university. I worked as a Lecturer, HR Manager, and Consultant, also contributed my effort for the development of various organisations. Within my educational journey, I have developed an academic mind and a habit of pursuing intensive research while studying, for instance, academic plan, keeping records of lectures sequence, presentation, public speaking, action learning, reflection on previous lesson and progress, managing quality of academic standards and performances. I also have advanced workplace skills in leadership, management, recruitment and selection, employee relations, business development, business/employment/labour law, learning and development, inspection, public speaking, best use of IT at work and so on. At this instant, it would be great and I love to welcome the opportunity of Vice President Business and Law which may have apparent new challenges and most importantly the opportunity to contribute within Middlesex University Students' Union (“MDXSU”) whilst doing PhD. Why do I want to be MDXSU Vice President? The MDXSU is one of the few bodies in the University directly answerable to Middlesex University students, and I think a good Vice President (“VP”) has the potential to make a fundamental difference to our university experience. In my time so far at Middlesex University (2008-2010 as MA HRM student and 2012-present as PhD student) I have seen how the MDXSU works: as a student, as a PhD student representative (11/2012present). Because of this I have developed not only an understanding of university politics, but a desire to work on behalf of our student body to get us the best deal. Acting on this desire in addition to my studies has been challenging but rewarding, and I feel that I have achieved a lot. However, given the opportunity to do this full time, I feel that I could achieve a whole lot more. What do I want to do? I think the MDXSU has done a fantastic job past few years, opening channels of communication from the executive team to the student body. I now want to build on this by making things even more transparent and getting you, the students, more involved in the dialogue. As a VP, I want to hear what matters to you most, and do my very best to change what you think is wrong with the university, as well as letting university know what you think is right! I currently have a range of specific policies, I would like to pursue, which include making more effective approach of diversity within the university, student voice for our betterment, and reorganising the MDXSU office to make it a more welcoming and serviceable place. However, the best way to achieve these goals will be to work closely with the executive team to come up with effective solutions, supporting their judgements and decisions. This will of course involve some flexibility, and openness to the new ideas they will no doubt bring to the table. Moreover, I would like to help build on the great work done by us all to further improve for our MDXSU’s reputation in the university. Why am I right for the job? This year I have been really involved in PhD student’s affairs and I have been a key member of the PhD student office improvement. I worked as a Lecturer, HR Manager, and Consultant, also contributed my effort for the development of various business organisations. Through all very different roles, they each have shown qualities that I think are essential for MDXSU VP. The experience as a lecturer and HR manager within London East Bank College has proven my organisation skills, as well as the flexible and supportive ways in which I undertake teamwork. Welfare has shown my willingness to commit to a role around the clock, and requires an empathy and confidentiality essential to the management of a team. Finally, above mentioned has shown my creativity, managerial skill, and ability to breathe new life into a project. All this taken into the account, I think I would be a great Middlesex University Students' Union Vice President. Kind Regards, Taslim Ahammad
