wood machining core

This project explores the historical craft of woodworking within Vancouver’s industrial zones and attempts to reanimate the dying culture amidst its contemporary context. The premise: although hand made furniture was once a thriving industry in the timber-rich province of BC, the market is diminishing as imports of prefabricated products with low initial cost take over. Woodworkers and designers are further set back due to the high start-up costs associated with running a shop, and the difficulty of displaying their products to the public. Despite these challenges there is, and always will be, a market in demand for quality, hand-crafted furniture.

The central idea of the project is showcasing the building’s interior functions to increase public awareness and appreciation for the historical craft. Within its industrial context, the building attempts to encourage public interaction with individual designers while providing workers with shared machining space to reduce initial start-up costs. This model is achieved through ownership of both working and living spaces for each business. By providing furniture makers with working spaces facing the streetfront, customers have the ability to walk up and engage with each of the businesses or browse through the gallery lined with student work. 3

As part of an introductory design studio the team studied the physical and conceptual constraints of the severed limb, “Hand as an autonomous creature. Studies of its behavior and movement led to the formulation of a space for Hand and its companion to carry out three routine tasks. The proposed solution vertically seperates the three functional zones, rest+work+play, and arranges them by degree of privacy. The lowest zone is shared allowing each creature to communicate through play.

Inspired by the views towards the YVR runway and the spirit of the campus in which it resides, the shelter symbolizes the form of an aircraft. The canopy projects out of the ground and folded steel plates are angled to mimic takeoff. During their breaks, students climb in to the open fuselage and can watch flights between classes.

The dwelling’s resolute placement is driven by the inhabitants’ fascination with the ocean and its cyclical movement. In response, moving components both engage the water and maximize space within the compact plan. raised boardwalk

This proposal adds program to the original 1902 design in hopes of bringing these people back.

seamless integration with existing context:

c1

recreational baths and accommodation

d1

The site is sandwiched between Liepãja’s natural waterfront and its man made parks. The proposal should respond to these conditions and blend a contemporary development into its historical Baltic setting.

e1 demolition

e2 refurbished baths

e3 ancillary bathing rooms formally simple addition:

c2 respond to neighboring adjacencies

d2

The proposal should not take away from the existing Bath House but, rather, extend from it like a series of functional growths.

e4 cool-down spaces

e5 staffing rooms catalyst for future waterfront growth:

c3 reactivate iconic bath house complex

d3

Programming at the Bath House entrance should activate the street, encouraging pedestrian movement along the waterfront. Future public developments will aid in the revitalization of the park corridor.
