No. 13 Creighton got a JQH Arena record 39 points from Doug McDermott, including 28 in the second half, to push the visiting Bluejays past MSU, 74-52. The Bears were led by Keith Pickens with 11 points and 4 rebounds, while Anthony Downing and Gavin Thurman scored 10 apiece. MSU held serve in the first half to force four ties and 10 lead changes, but let the visitors go into the intermission with a 4-0 run before the break. Creighton collected a 3-pointer by Jahenns Manigat with 35 seconds left in the opening stanza to give CU a 32-27 advantage at the midway point. Creighton let McDermott take over from there. The junior tallied Creighton’s first 18 points of the second half and made his first 10 shots, pushing the visitors ahead 50-32 just over seven minutes into the second period. He made 10of-11 field goal attempts in the second period alone and 15-of-19 for the game, to hand the Omaha club its 10th straight victory. The Bears kept clawing and used the energy of its largest home drawing of the season to cut their deficit to 13 with just over eight minutes left to go. Backto-back 3-pointers by Nathan Scheer and Michael Simpson made the score 57-44 at the time. But as they did all night, the visitors rallied behind McDermott who knocked down a trey and later made all three free throws from a soft shooting foul to push the Jays back ahead by 21 two-and-a-half minutes later. MSU held CU to just one field goal in the final 3:38, and got its final shots from freshmen Simpson and Bruce Marshall to close out a frustrating second half. The Bears were out-rebounded by a 35-22 margin on the night, but collected 10 caroms on the offensive end, including four by Pickens. Coach Paul Lusk’s squad finished 22-for-58 (.379) from the field, with 11 field goals in each half, and a disappointing 5-for-23 (.217) from 3-point range. MSU got to the foul line just four times, making three, with the Jays committing just 10 fouls. MSU also had just eight turnovers and collected five steals. Nine Missouri State players scored, including 19 collective points from the five freshman in uniform. Marcus Marshall sat out with an ankle sprain.

Missouri State’s Gavin Thurman scored a game-high 18 points, and Anthony Downing added 12 points and 7 rebounds, but a series of second-half runs pushed home standing Indiana State past the Bears, 68-60. After holding a 31-27 lead at the half, the Bears gave up a quick bucket by Justin Gant to start the second stanza, but answered with a 3-pointer by Marcus Marshall to move ahead 34-29 inside the first minute. But the Sycamores throttled control away from the visitors over the next six minutes, going on a 17-3 run and forcing five MSU turnovers to lead 46-37 with 12:45 to play. With just over 12 minutes to go, MSU scored on back to back possessions to make it 46-42 after Downing scored, and Dorrian Williams dropped in a long 3-pointer. But Dawon Cummings single-handedly carried ISU for the next six minutes with only Thurman managing points for the Bears until Pickens made one of two free throws with 7:37 on the clock. Devonte Brown extended the Indiana State lead to as many as 14, scoring six points in a 10-1 Sycamores’ run that gave the home club a 60-46 advantage with three-and-a-half remaining. Downing started a 6-0 Bears’ spurt from there with a pair of free throws. Thurman then knocked down a 15-footer before a Downing runner brought the visitors back within 60-52 with just over two minutes on the clock. And, in the final 90 seconds, Indiana State missed 5-of-10 free throws to give Missouri State a chance. Thurman pushed the deficit back to single digits with a long jumper with 79 seconds remaining, and then with 27.4 left, Nathan Scheer collected a steal and knocked down a long trey that made it 66-60. MSU then fouled Lucas Eitel who missed both free throws and opened the door even wider. But Missouri State failed to capitalize on the opportunity, and after Scheer forced a contested 30 footer, ISU snagged a critical carom to get back to the line. With the game in the balance, Cummings made both free throws to seal the win for the Sycamores and send the Hulman Center crowd of 5,593 home happy. The Bears also got 9 points from Christian Kirk and 7 from Keith Pickens. In the first half, the Bears never trailed after Thurman, in his second career start, came out firing with the Bears’ first 9 points in just under five minutes. A short jumper by Kirk at the 14:32 mark made it an 11-4 game to match the visitors’ largest lead of the opening period.
